"In current tunneling practice, finite element simulations have become an integral element of the planning and design process. These models are most often manually generated using 2D CAD drawings, which is a laborious and time consuming process. In this paper, we propose a BIM based approach, in which the 3D FE-model is automatically generated through a set of compatible geometries of individual components, i.e. the geology, alignment, lining and the TBM. The BIM model also includes all relevant model parameters of the tunneling project that can then be incorporated into subsequent analysis to be performed during the tunnel drive. The setup and the execution of the FE-analysis are performed automatically utilizing all required data from BIM. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed strategies is demonstrated by means of project data from the Wehrhahn-line metro project in Düsseldorf, Germany. Both the design as well as the construction stage is considered. INTRODUCTIONIt is recommend to employ Finite Element (FE) simulations in order to ensure a high degree of safety and quality for any given project (Guglielmetti et al. 2012). As such, FE models form an integral part in the design and planning stages of modern tunneling projects. These models are often time consuming to construct and require data from many different sources. This data is most often not centrally stored and therefore not easily accessible. Additionally, the formats in which project data are stored are typically not compatible with the formats required by an FE program. This is especially true in the case of geometrical data, such as CAD drawings. Although existing design drawings are most often used as the basis for a FE model, a direct import into a FE program is most often not successful as the imported data generates a geometry that does not fulfill the requirements of a FEM model, such as model connectivity. Even if a geometry is successfully imported, other necessary aspects of an FE model, such as boundary conditions and material properties, must be applied manually. These incompatibilities inevitably result in the creation of a new model, which, especially in the case of complex 3D models, is a time consuming process."

Acknowledgments I am honored to be named as a recipient of the Antoine M. Gaudin Award, and I would like to briefly single out four groups who deserve a special thank-you relative to this award. The first group consists of Professor Kawatra, the many international support references that he gathered and the Gaudin Committee itself. I know such things don't come without considerable effort by many individuals, and I'm grateful for their support. The second group consists of the management of The Dow Chemical Company, the managements of various mining companies and, in recent years, the management of G. S. Technologies, all of whom supported me, financially and otherwise, in my grinding, flotation and other particle-processing work. Operations people are the most overworked and under recognized people in the world, whether they be in the mining or chemical industry. Obviously, without extensive industrial support, especially from operating personnel in the mining industry, almost nothing about the work contained in this lecture would have, or could have, happened. The third group consists of a number of coworkers who have played key roles in specifically implementing the new flotation-product portion of this lecture. Of these, Bob Hansen, Don Leonard, Basil Fee, Simon Isherwood, Fernando Cones and Marty Meulendyke deserve special recognition. They have not only been dedicated, but they have been great to work with. Also in this third group are many members of the international academic community, especially those at Penn State. Professor Leonard Austin must be singled out because he took me as a young mathematically oriented chemist and taught me to be an effective process-oriented engineer. Without this experience, I would not have had the over 30-year career as an engineer, which I have loved. In addition, Len planted the size-reduction-research virus in my blood, which I can't seem to get rid of. I also need to mention Professor Frank Aplan, whose obvious love of mineral processing and froth flotation helped to create my interest in flotation. Thus, for those of you who don't like my approach to flotation, it's all Frank's fault. The fourth, and certainly not the least, group to thank is my wife, Charlene, and our two sons, Richard and Steven. No one could have a more supportive family. In every sense of the word, my wife has been my partner from the beginningwe were married at the end of my freshman year in college. She has sacrificed much for me, and I will never really be able to express the depth of my gratitude for Charlene's encouragement, loyalty and support over the past 36 years. General comments on froth flotation The industrial process of froth flotation: Where is it going? I'm here to tell you loud and clear that froth flotation is alive, well, and growing. The inherent characteristics of high mineral throughput per unit of capital, low operating cost per unit of feed, high mineral specificity and high operating flexibility have guaranteed froth flotation an important past and a growing future. As with any evolving technology, there are always trends at the industrial level that are primarily driven by economics. "It is well known that tunnelling involves a high degree of risk. Conventional risk management only evaluates risks and chooses mitigation measures before the start of a project. However, mitigation measures also introduce risks, which are ignored in the conventional risk control process when choosing different measures. The Multiphase Risk Management Method (MRMM) takes the risk of mitigation measures and dynamic risk control into consideration. This paper introduces this new method and provides a flow chart for better understanding. A case study of the MRMM is given based on Ningbo Metro Line 3, the first quasi rectangle shield tunnel in China. INTRODUCTION Tunnelling itself is generally complex and involves a high degree of uncertainty (Huang, 2006; Thompson and Thompson, 2006). In recent years, several metro tunnel projects in China have been involved in accidents (Wang, 2006; Gong and Zhang, 2012).As a result, Chinese tunnel engineers are paying more and more attention to risk management in tunnel projects (Xiao-lin and Ping et al., 2009; Zhong and Jia et al., 2014), and scholars around the world have put forward many management processes. Existing risk management mainly focuses on a particular stage of a tunneling project. Tunnel engineers or other project parties usually carry out risk assessment and set up schemes or choose mitigation measures before a project begins. The risk from this initial risk assessment may be defined as the initial risk (Bai and Dai et al., 2013). This kind of managing process has been widely used for its simplicity and comprehensibility. However, this static theory cannot properly reveal the dynamic character of the risk during tunnelling. In addition, to reduce the risk from unacceptable level to acceptable level also calls for optimum measures. Therefore, the multiphase risk management method was proposed (Bai and Dai et al., 2013). The purpose of this paper is to introduce and develop the MRMM, and to provide a brief flow chart to illustrate the risk management process based on it. Finally, an example of the first quasi rectangle shield tunnel in China in Ningbo Metro Line 3 is illustrated. It analyzes the initial and secondary risk and sets up a risk control system."

The most important difference between weathering and alteration, which are the definition of the change in rocks that occur with the help of physical and chemical effects, is a new product is formed as a result of alteration. Although atmospherical conditions are the most important factor during rock change, geothermal fields play a large role in the developing of alteration phenomenon. Because every geothermal system shows different characteristics including the chemistry of geothermal fluids and their potential applications, alteration on the field is important for the studies to find geothermal energy sources and to obtain the thermal fluids. The development of weathering and alteration which is the mark of interaction , between the physical and chemical properties of geothermal fluids and gases with the reservoir and wall rock, gives out important data about the hydrogeology, hydrology, reservoir conditions and characteristics of reservoir rocks of the geothermal field. Therefore defining the development of weathering and alteration phenomenon in a geothermal field and modeling the change in rocks, is very important for the benefication of the geothermal field economically. In this study 70 km2 that reside between Kösedere plains, Uzunburun, Çamtepe, Centirler villages in Çanakkale - Ayvacik - Tuzla geothermal field were studied and subsurface travel of saline thermal fluids and their interaction with the rocks and development of weathering and alteration phenomenon in the field were investigated. For this purpose geological mapping of the field were done and observations and measurements as well as rock sampling were carried in locations more than 220. As the result of petrographical investigations of rock samples development of weathering and alteration phenomenon were defined and 16 rock samples out of 220 that represent the field in general were chosen to be chemically analized and after that geochemical comments on the Tuzla geothermal field were made. Also hydrothermal alteration zones that are located in Tuzla Tepe, on which weathering and alteration phenomenon is observed as widespread and thermal water discharge locations in the near perimeter of Tuzla Tepe were mapped and from these data rock change in Tuzla geothermal field were modeled.

INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a research facility located in Southeastern New Mexico. The WIPP is being developed by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) to demonstrate the safe storage of defense-related radioactive wastes in bedded salt. Since the WIPP is a research facility. a number of large-scale in situ experiments have been planned and are currently under construction (Munson, 1983). These experiments were designed to study various aspects of nuclear waste storage in bedded salt such as mechanical responses and creep closures of drifts, thermal response due to heated canisters, and thermally-induced fluid migration. One purpose of the WIPP is to develop and demonstrate a general predictive structural analysis capability for a bedded salt repository. One set of experiments, called the Geomechanical Evaluation (Room G), is heavily instrumented to study the creep around several rooms with different configuration. A Layout of the Geomechanical Evaluation room is shown in Figure 1. One portion of it consists of wedge shaped pillar where two drifts intersect at an angle of 7.5 degrees. The pillar can be seen at the bottom of Figure 1. One purpose of the wedge pillar experiment is to study progressive pillar failure in the tip region. Another is to determine how nonuniform pillar thickness affects creep closure of the drifts. An important aspect of the experiments is the correlation between experimental data and corresponding pretest finite element analyses of the site. The finite element simulations serve two purposes. First, the computer simulations aid in understanding the experimental results by providing calculated stress. strain and displacement fields that cannot be measured directly. Second, comparison of calculated and measured drift closures serves as a method for validating or improving the finite element models and the constitutive models employed. The wedge pillar geometry required a 3-D finite element creep calculation. Results from these 3-D calculations will be presented in this paper. A 2-D plane strain double drift model which approximates the wedge pillar geometry at a slice perpendicular to the drift has also been performed and will be compared to the 3-D results in this paper. FINITE ELEMENT COMPUTER PROGRAMS Two finite element computer programs. JAC (Biffle, 1984) and JAC3D (Biffle. 1986), were used. JAC is a 2-D finite element program developed for quasi-static analysis of non-linear solids. It employs the conjugate gradient iterative technique to obtain a solution Spatial integration is performed using a single gauss point in each four node quadrilateral element. An hourglass viscosity technique is used to control the zero energy modes that occur with single point integration. The single point integration combined with the explicit nature of the program and exploitation of CRAY-1 computer architecture results in very efficient execution J4: results were compared to results obtained with eight other 2-D structural creep computer codes in the second WIPP benchmark exercise (Morgan, 1981) JAC3D was derived from JAC to treat 3-D finite element models and has many of the same characteristics including single point integration and hourglass viscosity. INTRODUCTION As man moved through the ages into the era of metals, he became increas¬ingly dependent on the extraction and beneficiation of various ore types. His progression has required more material, new sources, and inevitably, a need to extract the values from ores of much lower yield. Inherently welded to this need to extract has been the attendant requisite of power and water to carry out these tasks. With the richness of these deposits diminished, and the in¬crease of demand, mining has become so intimately tied with the needs of these auxiliary systems that the modern day milling operation can ill afford to ignore them. In the times of Agricola 16th century methods of milling required little thought for power or water consumption. Reduction was accomplished by hand¬sorting and hammer and grinding done with stamps and millstones. Medieval concentration was carried out by the "Jigging sieve" with agitation supplied by the sleeveless arm of the operator (The Mines Magazine,_ March 1933). Little consideration was likely given to the power source unless it became apparent that he had insufficient means to meet the demands of a dawn to dusk operation. Fuel for power production was also probably of little consequence unless sustained drought or warring neighbors burned the miners fields. Water was available from any adjacent stream with recycle, potable, tailings and mill consumption all going and coming from the same source. By the end of the 18th century and the early 19th century the requirements of larger throughputs and better re¬covery were forcing the miner to the need for greater sources of power and water. Arrastras, capable of accepting several hundred pounds of charge, con¬sisted of a clay bottom, a "liner of rocks harder than the substance to be crushed" and a revolving center post in which the ore was ground and amalga¬mated. Used in conjunction with a slucing system, this formed the primary recovery method of the time. Power was supplied by horse or oxen or, if terrain was amenable, by use of a horizontal or overshot water wheel. A typical system required 4.5 kw (6 hp) and needed to run in the vicinity of 15 rpm (Pre¬ston, 1895).

INTRODUCTION Tunneling machines were introduced into civil con¬struction in the 1800s, but their practical applications were not realized fully until the 1950s. As of 1977, tunneling machines were being used on most tunneling projects of substantial size. As in civil construction, the mining applications of tunneling machines have included long drives such as tunneling for long ore-body develop¬ment drifts, long haulage tunnels, longwall access drifts, and long crosscut developments. Tunneling machines ranging from 1.75-m (5.7-ft) to more than I1.0-m (36-ft) diam are available from several manufacturers; machines for mining applications generally have ranged between 1.75 and 6.0-m (5.7¬and 20.0-ft) diam. Tunneling machines usually operate at or near horizontal grades and are supported by a rail-haulage backup system. However, declines and inclines have been made using alternative backup equip¬ment. Either circular or shaped tunnels may be bored, depending upon the particular equipment used. Using tunneling machines to bore openings through rock offers several advantages over the use of the drilling and blasting technique. These advantages include a rapid advance, continuous operation, uniformity of the opening size, smooth walls, and safe working conditions. Compared to drilling and blasting, boring reduces the disturbance of adjacent rock, thereby reducing the ground-support requirements and the exposure to water inflows. The smooth walls provide natural arching and present minimum resistance to the flow of air. A tunneling machine should be considered a spe¬cialized mining tool that is well-suited to certain mining applications. Properly applied and sustained, a tunnel¬ing machine contributes to realizing substantial econo¬mies in the development of underground mines. All costs herein are expressed in 1977 US dollars, unless otherwise noted. The mention of trade names and manufacturers is not intended to imply an endorse¬ment of any specific equipment. TYPES OF TUNNELING MACHINES As listed in Table 1, five principal types of tunneling machines were being manufactured in 1977. Each type of machine offers a special solution to a specific mining problem. Although each of these types of machines is described herein, most of this chapter is devoted to the full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine that has demon¬strated the greatest production in both civil construction and mining applications. Full-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 1, a full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine consists of a rotating head that is fitted with rock-cutting tools and is forced into the tunnel face. This head is supported by a bearing on a structural support member that, in turn, is held in place by a hydraulically positioned wall-gripping mechanism. Both torque and thrust are reacted from the cutterhead, through the structural support and gripper mechanism, and to the tunnel wall. The rock cuttings fall to the invert at the tunnel face, and they are removed by means of cutterhead buckets or scoops that transfer the cuttings to a conveyor belt. After advancing the cutter¬head through a preset boring stroke, the tunneling machine is advanced by hydraulically pulling the gripper mechanism in from the tunnel walls, stroking forward, and resetting the gripper to the new forward position on the wall; the machine then is set for the next advance stroke. Full-face machines cut only circular openings. Ma¬chines with diameters as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) and as large as 6.1 m (20 ft) have been used in mining applica¬tions, excavating rock with unconfined compressive strengths in excess of 276 000 kPa (40,000 psi). Although special machines have been designed to turn on a radius of 30 m (100 ft) in both horizontal and vertical directions, the conveyors and backup sup¬port equipment generally limit tunneling machines to turns with a radius of more than 60 m (200 ft). The full-face rotary rock-tunneling machines have provided the fastest and most reliable production of any mining method or machine. These machines can be equipped to place any of a variety of ground-support systems, and they can be provided as "open" machines, as shown in Fig. 1, or as "shielded" machines, as shown in Fig. 2. The open machines have the advantage of allowing the ground to be supported as near to the tunnel face as possible. The shielded machines have been designed principally to allow placing precast con¬crete segments. The shielded machines completely pro¬tect the equipment and personnel at the heading, but they are economically limited to permanent long-life haulageways where full lining is required. Partial-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 3, the partial-face rotary tunneling machine is equipped with a cutterhead that rotates slowly at about 0.21 rad/s (2.0 rpm). The single-disk cutterhead produces the tunnel section shown in Fig. 4 by means of an oscillating motion. These machines work on the undercutting principle, and they are avail¬able in spring-line dimensional increments of 0.1 m (0.32 ft) from 1.5 to 2.1 m (5.0 to 7.0 ft); the vertical dimensions are 2.4 to 3.2 m (8.0 to 10.5 ft), respec¬tively. Depending upon the tunnel width, the cutterhead disk may be fitted with from 8 to 16 drag-bit cutters. Penetration is achieved by means of hydraulic rams that force the tungsten-carbide bits into the rock mass. The operation is cyclic, with cutting occurring only on the upstroke. On the downstroke, the rotating cutter¬head draws the fallen muck from the invert into the panzer-type conveyor for rearward transfer. This feature allows time to either reposition ore cars or to exit the tunnel with muck trains while the machine is cutting, as shown in Fig. 5. The concept of hypochlorite treatment prior to cyanidation in the heap leaching of low grade carbonaceous gold ores is discussed. Laboratory column leach tests using a low grade carbonaceous ore were performed to investigate the effects of pH, concentration, hypochlorite consumption, and bed height on the total gold extraction. At high pH, the hypochlorite stability increases and thus, hypochlorite consumption is decreased. At room temperature, the total gold extraction is proportional to the hypochlorite consumption. However, at some point additional hypochlorite consumption does not increase gold extraction. Gold recoveries of 10 and 80 percent are obtained for 12 and 167 lbs/ton hypochlorite consumption, respectively. Increasing hypochlorite concentration increases the rate of extraction. For a given hypochlorite consumption gold extraction was increased by shortening the ore column height. Finally, calcium hypochlorite is more effective than sodium hypochlorite.

Introduction Surface mining is a business, and the objective of most businesses is to make as much money as possible within certain responsible constraints. Businesses normally measure their potential to make money by estimating the discounted cash flow rate of return on new projects or the net present value for ongoing projects. These estimators of profitability are calculated using the following well-known equation: [ ] where i is the year, n is the total number of years, A, is the after tax net cash generation in year I, r is the discount rate and NPV is the net present value. In its simplest form, when the value of r makes the NPV equal to zero, the discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR) is defined. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified at the point where the NPV or DCF-ROR is at a maximum. Depending on the measure used (DCF-ROR or discount rate) for calculating the NPV, the definition of recoverable reserve will be different for exactly the same deposit. Maximization of the measure of profitability and the economically recoverable reserves should not be separated from the mining method and sequence of exploiting the reserve. The surface mining methods may involve multiple-pass development of the resource, mining to the ultimate limit in one pass or a combination of the two methods with backfill. Multiple-pass development When planning a multiple-pass mining operation, it is important to determine the width of pit expansions that are appropriate for a specific situation. Production personnel typically want wide, open work areas where operations can be set up to run at peak efficiency. While this is understandable, the trade-off between highly efficient production operations and an overinvestment in stripping should be carefully weighed. As long as safety is not compromised, a few cents per bank cubic yard increase in operating cost due to lower productivity by working in more confined spaces may well be offset by a decrease in the overall short-term stripping requirements. A mini study on productivity and cost should help quantify this cost before deciding on minimum phasing requirements. The bigger challenge associated with establishing smaller work areas is securing operations and management buy-in to marginally lower productivity when reporting results. When cost reduction is the important management goal and everyone is focusing on unit costs, one sometimes loses sight of the goal of total cost management and, even more importantly, maximum profitability. The first pit should be defined by the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. 1 is constructed for a rate of production, R, and a quality management strategy, Q, by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, with each sequence assuming that the operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. These values are plotted to form the curve in Fig. 1. If the operation ceases on a pit that has too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have made more money invested at the discount rate than by mining the next pit expansion. Therefore, the maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV. There may be an opportunity to refine the definition of the "ultimate pit" around the maximum-value point. The precise definition of the ultimate pit early in the mine life may or may not be important today, depending on how far off in the future these limits will be reached. In-situ leaching of the oxidized copper mineral resource at the San Manuel mine has proven to be a technically and economically viable method of copper extraction. Although this leaching method has been modeled to predict future production capabilities, the expected magnitude of the ultimate recovery from any portion of the present mine is not fully understood. A closely controlled test has been designed, constructed, and is now operating to determine the rate and magnitude of copper recovery. The test, initiated in June 1992, is scheduled to operate for approximately 18 months. This paper presents an overview of the test design and current results.

As a general rule for gold treatment the presence of reasonable amounts of 'coarse' free gold will dictate the use of a gravity circuit. The actual particle size of gold that constitutes the por­tion of' coarse' free gold can vary widely. The larger its size the more troublesome it is, mainly because of the tendency for this gold to quickly settle out from slurries in regions of relatively low velocities. There are a multitude of places where 'coarse' gold can find a resting place, namely, in chutes, between and behind lines, in pump hoppers and in pumps themselves. Fortunately, the problems associated with recovering very 'coarse' free gold, say greater than Imm, is rare on most gold mines that have grinding and cyanide leaching circuits. For these operations it is common practice to have a gravity circuit situated within the milling circuit to recover 'coarse' free gold. Should the 'coarse' free gold constitute 15% to 20% of the total gold in a deposit then its recovery by gravity separation is seri­ously considered. As a gold mine 'matures' the availability of soft oxide ore decreases and the likelihood that harder ore having sulphide gold association increases. To maintain gold production rates in this situation either the gold grade of the treated ore must increase or more ore needs to be treated. In the latter case this is achieved by installing more grinding capacity, an expensive option, or coarsing the grind, with the downside of loss in gold recovery. In general the less expensive capital options is fol­lowed. There is, however, some upside to improve recovery when reasonable quantities of sulphide containing gold are pre­sented that can be recovered by flotation or gravity separation. Concentrates produced from these unit operations can be finely ground and reintroduced to the cyanide leach circuit to improve gold recovery. This scenario is a much less costly option than one where all the ore is ground finer. In this paper the experiences of recovering gravity gold from the Telfer Gold Mine, and gold associated pyrite from the New Celebration Mine will be discussed.

Impervious zones in copper waste heaps create a problem in contacting the rock with leaching solutions. These zones are normally associated with compacted layers .formed on the surface of each lift by dump truck traffic and by disintegration of the rock exposed to atmospheric conditions. These layers are usually only a few feet in depth--but, nevertheless, act as barriers to vertical flow causing the leach solution to perch in the heap, Consequently, much of the rock remains untouched and the leach solution breaks out the side of the heap instead of continuing downward to bedrock. One solution to this problem is breaking the hard pans with explosive charges. However, to use explosives means adopting new explosive materials and methods. To use this process successfully requires finding answers to operating conditions inherent to waste heaps. Foremost among these are: (1) type and size of casing that can be used because of limitations brought about by drilling problems, caving and, corrosive conditions; (2) perforating the casing at required levels; (3) an explosive capable of being pumped; (4) obtaining detonation of the, main charges through, the wail of the casing; (5) an explosive with the ability to propagate through the voids of the rubble and one which is not affected by water, acidic solutions, or back pressure conditions from hydrostatic heads; (6) to heave and rupture the compacted zones without chambering or recompressing the waste material.

It is well established that the results of emulsion flotation in which water-insoluble oily collectors are utilized depend critically on the emulsification of the collector and on its conditioning with the pulp prior to flotation. The flotation tests carried out with magnesite and fluorite using sodium oleate as collector confirmed acidic and alkaline ranges of good flotation. While the flotation results in the acidic solutions depend strongly on the conditioning time and can be very much improved when longer conditioning times are utilized, the tests in the alkaline environment do not exhibit any significant dependence on conditioning. The results obtained with sodium salts of myristic and lauric acids confirm these findings. The observed effects provide additional evidence for the role of the colloidal species which appear in the acidic solutions of weak electrolyte type surfactants, such as fatty acids. The flotation properties of sodium oleate in the pH region in which it appears in the form of oleic acid droplets are mainly determined by the properties of such droplets. The flotation in this pH region closely resembles an emulsion flotation.

The report shows the sensitivity that nine different cash-flow factors have on the discounted rate of return calculated from feasibiliity- studies on potenital open-pit orebodies of silver, copper, and uranium. Cash-flow factors of "grade", "market value", and "recovery" are. the most sensitive. This verifies the need of reliable estimates for these factors. The cost of evaluation of "preproduction cost" is the least sensitive. This gives credence to the fact that more consideration should be given to compiling sufficient data, as the largest financial losses are not in the cost of evaluation but rather in the abandonment of an unprofitable mining operation after a commitment of capital is made on the basis of an incomplete evaluation. Sensitivity analysis of cash-flow factors enhances evaluation programs by disciplining the collection of data and allowing more realistic distribution of evaluation monies.

During the year of 1972 ASARCO's Silver Bell embarked upon a project that would test a modified grinding circuit using direct digital compute against the performance of its other five grinding lines, implementation and subsequent outcome of that project has been previously reported in a paper by Pitts, et al. The main purpose of the present paper will be to describe major problems incurred during the implementation of this control strategy on the remaining five primary grinding lines and their solutions. Also included will be a discussion of changes made in operating philosophy and methods used since that report was written. Description The Silver Bell concentrator is a 10,436 tonne/day copper sulfide plant supplied by ore from two separate open pits approximately 4 km. apart. As well as receiving ore from these two main pits, ore is received from several exten¬sions of both pits. The ore bodies are variable in rock type and the extensions have increased this variability. Grinding is carried out by six primary, single-stage, 3.20M x 3.66M Allis Chalmers grate discharge ball mills in closed circuit with four Krebs D20B cyclones (Fig. 1). Each of these grinding circuits is controlled by four independent but interactive control elements. These control elements are the fresh ore feed, the water added to the feed end of the mill, the water added to the ball mill discharge sump, and the cyclone feed pump speed. At the present time, instrumentation for measuring primary process variables consists of Merrick weightometers for fresh ore feed, orifice plates coupled with differential pressure transmitters (dp's) for incoming water measurements, back-pressure diaphragm coupled with a dp for estimating ball mill discharge sump level, a magnetic flowmeter for determining cyclone feed velocity and a nuclear density gauge for measuring cyclone feed density. All measuring instruments develop electrical signals that are measured as 2-10 V DC "inputs o the computer interface.

Since 1993 Inco Ltd. has been using wet shotcrete at Stobie Mine. Through an evolving process the mine has reduced the thickness and fiber content of its steel fiber reinforced (sfr) shotcrete. However, the shotcrete support is used without any other type of ground support. A process referred to as bolt less shotcrete. Boltless shotcrete is used as the primary ground support method in development headings when the sub level caving front passes through the development drifts which now serve as migrating ore draw points. Although there are references of drifts and tunnels supported by shortcrete only, written accounts are rare. The empirical nature of most underground support designs makes them of limited value in a boltless environment. Considerable amounts of material testing and insitu trials have been completed in order to estimate material property strengths. Material testing, for adhesion, flexural strengths and compressive strength along with observational insitu data have been used to evaluate the performance of shotcrete. Punch tests on panels have also been undertaken in order to gain insights on the limitations of the two dimensional testing common to the laboratory. All these design aspects have been successfully utilized to design an efficient ground support process.

The Bureau of Mines has developed an equation which describes the dewatering of clay slurries with polyethylene oxide. This dewatering equation is An _ kC + b where n, k. and b are empirical constants and C is the concentration of polymer solution used for dewatering. The minimum amount of polymer required for dewatering. A is determined by titration of the clay slurry with a polymer solution. In this report, the dewatering equation is applied to data obtained for a polyacrylamide dewatering sequence. Fundamental similarities between the dewatering properties of clays and the viscosity of polymer solutions were observed. These similarities were explained by correlating an equation describing polymer configuration in solution with the dewatering equation. This correlation showed that amount of polymer required for dewatering and polymer solution viscosity are both consequences of the frictional interaction of entangled polymer coils.

Her rich and doting father was hopeful of making an advantageous marriage for his daughter. Instead, she defied him, became a Christian, and refused to marry. Traumatized, he killed her and was himself struck dead by lightning. That is not the plot of a new soap opera. It is the melodramatic story of a Turkish teenager who was martyred in the third century but lives still as patron saint of mining. The story begins with a 20th century fact. Santa Barbara is a figment of imagination - perhaps based on an early oriental folk heroine, embroidered by a seventh century storyteller, and reworked by a ninth century Greek martyrologist. The authoritative Lives of the Saints reports: "There is ... Considerable doubt about the existence of a virgin martyr called Barbara and it is quite certain that her legend is spurious. There is no mention of her in the earlier martyrologies, her legend is not older than the seventh century, and her cult did not spread until the ninth." The Catholic Dictionary adds that the Barbara story is probably "a pious legend." Widely revered Santa Barbara was one of the most widely venerated saints of the Middle Ages. She became the patron, not only to miners, but also to artillerymen, engineers, architects, builders, stonemasons, gravediggers, and sailors. Mines, mountains, churches, and places bear her name. Barbara's feast day, Dec. 4, appears on the most ancient holy day calendars. And a Barbara festival is still celebrated throughout central Europe, in Spain, and in mining areas of Latin America on that date. The Pacific coast channel, the city, and the mission of California are named for Santa Barbara. An expedition, sailing that coast under Viscaino in 1602, was saved from shipwreck on Dec. 4 after the sailors prayed for Barbara's intervention. In the last decade, Meloy developed the IAC - Interfacial Area Conservation - model of liberation. His work included three conservation laws and a mathematical tool called textural transform. This paper reviews the developments and applications of the IAC model. From simple spherical two-phase locked particles with planar interfaces, the model has been developed for curved interfaces and solids with complex textures. Moreover, complex shaped particles and ores having more than two phases have been considered. The model equations give the degree of liberation of the component phases for different ore textures – platy blocky and acicular - as well as for different sue distributions. Lockedness profiles are offered for defining the middlings composition, so that from the model it is possible to predict washability curves.

This paper deals with the effect of various bit geometric parameters on failure characteristics of rock material. Improvement of rock cutting efficiency of continuous mining machines has been an interesting research topic for the last few decades. In the current study, an automated rotary rock cutting simulator, duplicating a continuous miner, was utilized to study these parameters in the laboratory. Improvement of bit performance in terms of its life, cutting efficiency, dust production and energy consumption has drawn wide spread attention over the years. Research shows that optimizing bit parameters can result in efficient fragmentation of rock. Indiana limestone rock material was utilized in this study while bit tip angle, bit tip size, bit spacing, depth of cut and cutting velocity of rotary drum were varied to investigate the failure characteristics. The cutting pressure, penetrating pressure and the depth of cut were monitored on the simulator during the cutting process. Air borne dust and settled dust were measured for each experiment. Then, the specific airborne dust and specific energy were determined for the each type of bit. Triaxial tests were carried out to correlate the failure angle of the rock in static case to dynamic cutting process failure. The physical and mechanical properties of the rock were also determined in order to assess their influence on the wear characteristics of each bit.
