Gold Fields is the world?s fourth largest gold producer with operations in South Africa, Australia, Ghana and South America. All of Gold Fields? South African Operations are located in the Witwatersrand Basin and are intermediate to deep level underground mines exploiting gold bearing, shallow dipping tabular orebodies, which have collectively produced over 50 kt (1,608 Moz) of gold over a period of more than 100 years. Although the use of Monte Carlo as a business tool was introduced in 1964, it has only been in the last 30 years that it has gained increasing acceptance within the mining industry. However, the application thereof has been mostly limited to determination of risk in project areas. This paper however, considers the possibility of using Monte Carlo simulations to asses the underlying ?Root Cause? criteria critical to the operations management of existing mining operations. Currently, working operations have a distinct advantage over project areas as they have a wealth of historical information at hand. This, in turn, can be utilized to model distributions and relationships that can be used in Monte Carlo simulations, the results of which can be analysed to determine areas of concern. Projects can then be set up to ameliorate the effects of these and in turn reduce the risk of not achieving the operational targets. It is here that it must be stated emphatically that it should be the ?root causes? and the associated relationships that need to be emplaced within the model in order to achieve results that reflect the true causal relationship. The paper outlines possible sources of ?root cause? relationships and considers the outcomes of these in a case study on a large South African Gold Mine.

All underground openings are three-dimensional, and in many cases it is not valid to analyse two-dimensional sections. This has been a problem in the past owing to the magnitude and complexity of three-dimensional stress analysis. In this paper a three-dimensional boundary element approach, using non-conforming quadratic elements, which is specifically applicable to underground excavations, is described. In addition, the philosophy of application of stress analyses is discussed. Three case histories are presented to demonstrate the practical nature of the approach as a tool in solving mining problems.

Pipe-stick support in deep-level gold mines is first described and illustrated, a pipe-stick being a mine pole trimmed to the required size and sleeved by a pipe. An account is then given of an investigation into this form of support that involved load-compression tests in a 1000-ton press, tests in a rapid loading machine simulating rock-burst conditions, a study of the load-compression behaviour of pipesticks installed underground, and a cost evaluation. Pipe-stick support was found to be very effective on the face and to cost less than conventional matpacks.

The results of laboratory abrasive and abrasive-corrosive tests carried out on a range of carbon, Iowalloy, and stainless steels are compared with underground tests conducted on similar materials on prototype shaker conveyors carrying gold-bearing quartzitic rock. The dry-abrasion resistance of all the steels was found to be better than that of mild steel. When the added effect of corrosion was tested, the stainless steels proved to be much superior to proprietary abrasion-resistant alloys both in the laboratory and underground. The ferritic stainless grades were shown to be superior on the basis of cost per unit of volume lost. This investigation has shown that laboratory tests on materials can provide valuable information on their possible performance in situ, and can thus be used to replace lengthy experiments on site.

Diamonds are mined from ancient raised beach deposits in southern Namibia where complex geological controls have resulted in patchy diamond distribution, largely related to irregularities (trapsites) in the bedrock. The distribution of the number of diamonds per sample is a discrete, reverse- J shape distribution which can be characterized by two parameters. These parameters have been transformed into a Beta and Theta Contribution which can be interpreted as reflecting the 'quantity' and 'quality' of the trapsites. The relationship of statistical parameters, obtained during the sampling of an ore deposit, to the geology of the deposit is an important element of ore reserve estimation. The large-scale regional trends in the contributions have been explained in terms of the geology.

HPGR equipment has been well proven to be energy-efficient in the first stage of grinding in iron ore beneficiation plants. Numerous advantages of utilising HPGR grinding prior to ball mill grinding, such as reducing the power consumption in a ball mill through generation of micro-cracks, has been thoroughly studied. Less attention has been paid to efficiency of the HPGR circuit rather than the downstream ball mill circuit. In this study the HPGR circuit has been optimised through feed size reduction by crushing, and feed iron content upgrading by dry cobbing. This optimisation leads to better operation of the HPGR, and a smaller product size which is expected to result in a lower wear rate of ball mill liners and balls. It is also expected that the top size of the ball mill balls be reduced. Additionally, by reducing the feed size of HPGR from 30 mm to 15 mm, it is possible to achieve similar K80 of HPGR product in lowered pressure, i.e. 2.5 N.mm-2 instead of 3.5 N.mm-2 which translates to ease of operation. Similarly in a given roll pressure, smaller feed sizes result in higher specific throughput of ~10% which means higher production capacities. The results also reveal that this optimisation increases the concentrate weight recovery by about 10%. It also results in slight increases in the Fe grade of the product iron concentrate. In a FeNi electric arc furnace, the physical properties of the slag (chemistry, viscosity, liquid/solid/gas ratio) are of crucial importance in controlling the efficiency of the process. In this paper, we studied the slag crystallised on the walls of a semi-industrial furnace (freeze-lining), the slag rising through the burden during foaming phenomena, and the casted slag. The freeze-lining is the layer of oxides that crystallises on the refractory wall of a furnace, protecting it from chemical and mechanical aggression. It records changes in furnace conditions (slag chemistry, temperature, oxygen fugacity), which makes it possible to observe the impact of these elements. In the high reduction test, the freezing lining is composed of magnesian olivine. Switching to a low reduction process increases the Fe content of the olivine and causes orthopyroxene to appear, making the freeze-lining mechanically and thermally weak. Thermal incidents in the furnace cause significant slag foaming. This foaming is produced by a massive crystallisation of the olivine (due to the drop in temperature), and inducing an exponential increase in viscosity, preventing the free circulation of gases. These foaming episodes are also recorded in the freeze lining and form layers rich in gas bubbles, and therefore mechanically fragile. The slag casted and cooled in a ladle allows the first steps of slag crystallisation to be studied. Olivine is the liquidus phase, with a magnesium-rich core and an iron-enriched rim, contemporaneous with the orthopyroxene phase. The habitus of these phases is very similar to that found in komatiites for the same minerals. FeNi slag is therefore an industrial analogue that is easy to study and compare to komatiites. The use of face conveyors in gold mines by N. C. JOUGHIN. B.Sc. (Eng.). Ph.D. (Wits) (Member) and A. C. BUCKMASTER; M.A. (Cantab.) A mechanized stope-cleaning system has been developed around an armoured face conveyor, which was tested on the surface and in two underground trials. In the second underground trial, an average face advance of 8,5 m per month was obtained with a labour productivity of 27 ca/worker/month on a two-shift blast cycle. Two new face cleaning systems have been built, each incorporating an armoured face conveyor, a loading plough, a collapsible self-advancing barricade, and an integral roof-support system. These are about to be tested. A new type of reciprocating flight conveyor is being developed for stope use. This is cheaper, lighter, and more compact, and exhibits better wear characteristics, than an armoured face conveyor. In the early stages of the trials, this conveyor frequently achieved a singleshift blast cycle. It should be possible to achieve face advances of up to 40 ca/worker/month with a consistent one-shift blast cycle. The use of drill rigs and a self-advancing roof-support system would improve the productivity to over 50 ca/worker/month.

In 1969 the Coal Division of the Anglo American Corporation was awarded the tender to supply coal to the new 3000 MW power station to be erected at Kriel, which is situated midway between the towns of Ogies and Bethal in the eastern Transvaal. The coal was to be supplied from the No. 4 Seam in the Kriel Area of the Witbank Coalfield. The No. 4 Seam in this area varies in depth of overburden from 75 m to 6 m, with an average of 55 m. Initially, the mine was planned as an underground mine incorporating a three-shaft system for transporting some 8 million tons of coal per annum to the power station. As the result of negotiations between Anglo and Escom to improve the volumetric extraction of coal from the new mine, the Kriel Division of Anglo Power Collieries was finally planned to produce 4,1 million tons of coal from an underground mine and 4,5 million tons from an opencast mine, with a resultant increase in volumetric extraction. This paper describes the opencast operation at Kriel, with particular reference to the water problems encountered and to the operation of the draglines on sloping ground to a depth of 40 m to the top of the coal seam.

During the course of 2011 the nationalization of mines emerged as one of the most contentious and emotive political issues under review. Some four years after the African National Congress electoral conference held in Polokwane, which had led to a change of leadership within the country's ruling party, elements within the ruling party's youth league, which had been virulently supportive of the change in leadership, turned on the incumbent President, using the mining question as its rallying call. At issue was the expressed perception that mining has, since the country's democratization, not delivered the anticipated benefits to the population as a whole, continues to be the preserve of the capitalist element of the South African community, and is therefore in need of radical reform. Aspersions were made that transformation within the industry had failed dismally and that mining companies had not delivered against their commitments to the Mining Charter and social and labour plans. The debate became extremely vocal and heated, evoked dramatic and emotive opinions, and vigorous skirmishes on the matter were fought in the media over much of 2011 and into 2012.

The conference was divided into a total of 12 different sessions. Apart from the keynote addresses, the papers covered many aspects of open-pit mining, from mine design and blasting techniques to mining operations and equipment, as well as water management and rehabilitation. A number of case studies were also presented. Most of the 68 papers originated from Australia; however, presentations were also made by representatives from Chile, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and South Africa. The keynote papers dealt with subjects such as the economics of open pits, project planning of a new large copper deposit, management principles, and rehabilitation strategies.

It is generally recognized that a large proportion of the gold remaining in the residues from metallurgical plants on the Witwatersrand is occluded in pyrite. The conventional flotation-roasting process typically recovers approximately 40 per cent of this gold. The process described here is an unconventional route involving bacterial oxidation, which can achieve a gold recovery of approximately80 per cent. The paper describes tests carried out in the laboratory, as well as on a slimes dam. The results show that recovery of gold can be noticeably enhanced through the use of bacteria under conditions of controlled pH, moisture, and aeration. Biological oxidation of the pyrite releases the occluded gold, which then becomes amenable cyanidation.

A fully instrumented laboratory drilling machine is described. It is designed to produce realistic drilling conditions with diamond microbits of 20 mm diameter. A computer-controlled data-logging system records the net power consumption, rotational velocity, bit thrust, torque, and penetration rate. Tests can be conducted under conditions of set thrust and rate of advance. In the tests reported, there is a significant correlation between the rock drilability and the measured rock properties of relative abrasion resistance and uniaxial compressive strength. Wear of a diamond bit is a crucial factor that cannot be determined simply from rock properties. Realistic drilability testing with appropriately scaled microbits is a convenient and economical way of evaluating diamond-bit performance and determining rock drilability.
