Dry air classification is a well-known technique used for decades in the cement industry to separate material in the size range of 0.01-1.0 mm. Additionally, in corresponding dry grinding circuits with effective machines such as High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), the energy consumption can be reduced compared to wet applications. These dry systems are not state of the art in minerals processing plants, but first prototypes have been installed and an increasing number of projects are starting to evaluate this option. One challenge in this field is the mineral composition of ores, which have, by far, a higher variety in density and size than those of cement. High density particles such as iron- containing ones have higher settling rates than low density silica particles of the same size. The main question to answer in this paper is how to evaluate this effect, so a quantitative method using Mineral Liberation Analyses was developed to calculate two-dimensional partition curves. Additional statistical analyses allow for isolation and quantifying the interaction of density and size, enabling engineers to consider this effect for the sizing of process plants. Deep level hardrock mining faces increasing challenges from elevated in situ stresses and associated rockbursts. This study aims to develop a systematic framework for evaluating destress blasting effectiveness, with a focus on deep Swedish hardrock mines. The methodology integrates a critical review and adaptation of global best practices: advanced numerical modelling (static and dynamic simulations), field-based rock fracture monitoring using ground penetrating radar and borehole imaging, and application of rockburst prediction criteria including the strain energy storage coefficient (F), brittle shear ratio, and burst potential index. Geostatistical simulations, machine learning models, and industrial internet of things-based, real-time monitoring are proposed to enhance predictive accuracy, model calibration, and operational adaptability. Key findings show that effective destress blasting evaluation requires multi-modal integration of numerical outputs, field observations, microseismic trends, and uncertainty quantification, accounting for site-specific geological variability and dynamic stress redistribution. The study advances the field by proposing a predictive, feedback-driven evaluation framework tailored for deep Swedish mining conditions, capable of improving proactive rockburst risk management. It offers both practical tools for mining practitioners to optimise stress management, reduce seismic hazards, and enhance excavation safety, and academic foundations for future refinement of destress blasting models, geotechnical monitoring strategies, and adaptive design protocols. This research contributes to safer, more efficient deep mining operations by bridging gaps between theoretical modelling, empirical monitoring, and real-time, data-driven blast design optimisation strategies.

The results revealed that the pozzolanic activity of the gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases improved by mechanical activation. Under the same activation conditions, the activated mica powders possessed the highest pozzolanic activity index, followed by the activated feldspar, and the activated quartz exhibited the lowest pozzolanic activity index. The addition of calcium oxide promoted the formation of amorphous C–(A)–S–H gel for all paste samples, and stratlingite and hydrotalcite were observed in calcium oxide activated mica paste. The addition of natural anhydrite promoted the formation of ettringite for the pastes of calcium oxide activated aluminosilicates materials (gold mine tailings, mica, and feldspar). Furthermore, the pozzolanic activity indexes of the mechanically activated gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases were tested to be qualified for use as supplementary cementitious material in cement. This paper provided an innovative approach for recycling gold mine tailings as supplementary cementitious materials in cement, which would be environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Back-analysis of two mining-induced tremors in 2011 was used to determine a modelling criterion for the entire Klerksdorp Goldfield (i.e., Vaal Reefs region). At that time, most mining operations in the region were owned by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and shared many geotechnical similarities. By 2018 AGA had sold off all its Klerksdorp operations to different mining companies, which continued applying the 2011 modelling criterion. As mining activities became more remote, scattered, and isolated, the extraction of isolated blocks of ground and remnants became increasingly necessary. However, the inherited criterion allowed only minimal or no mining activities at these areas. Keeping in mind that safety is the overriding consideration, an innovative numerical modelling approach, which includes the application of peak particle velocity designs, was developed to provide practitioners in the Klerksdorp Goldfield with a suitable criterion to justifiably and safely mine isolated blocks of ground and remnants. This would not always be possible if a conformist approach was used.

The Chairman declared the meeting open and extended a welcome to all visitors including Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Institute. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS GENERAL MEETING The Minutes of the General Meeting held on the 26th June, 1969, were read and adopted. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT The Chairman presented a report outlining the activities of the Branch during the past year. Membership of the local Branch had increased from 80 to 99 during the year. DECLARATIONOF OFFICEBEARERS The Chairman announced that owing to his transfer out of the Witbank area, he was unable to accept the nomination as Chairman for a further year of office. The outgoing committee had elected Mr J. Meintjes Chairman and Mr A. Bain Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr J. Meintjes then took the chair. Mr J. Meintjes thanked Mr C. G. Sowry for his successful steering of the Branch during its period of inauguration. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Chairman then read the Scrutineers' Report and declared the following eight members elected as Committee Members for the 1969-1970 year: Messrs I. Botha, A. W. Fiber-Optic Sensing and UAV-Platform Techniques for Innovative Mineral Exploration (FUTURE) is a joint European Union and South African consortium project funded under ERA-NET Cofund ERA-MIN3. The project aims to develop cost-effective and novel seismic methods to image geological structures ahead of the mine face, ultimately leading to improved decision-making and safer mining practices. In this study we present results from numerical simulations conducted at South Deep Gold Mine for active in-mine seismic surveys. The study uses a finite differencing code known as WAVE3D, which models models the propagation of a seismic wave generated by stress pertubations that are applied to a defined grid. The numerical simulation model included two major ore bodies (Black Reef and Ventersdorp Contact Reef) and mine tunnels. The model was constrained using laboratory physical property measurements from underground borehole samples such as seismic velocities (e.g., compressional and shear waves) and bulk densities. Two case studies were created, one modelled the active shots and receivers on surface, and the other modelled the shots at depth (in a mine tunnel at ~4000 m depth) with receivers on surface. In both cases, the objective was to investigate the wavefield propagation through the rockmass between the mine tunnel and surface. The simulated wavefield produced by the source located along the mine tunnel was successfully recorded on surface. The surface-recorded wavefield exhibits clear one-way P-wave arrival times at approximately 450 ms to 500 ms, which can be used to calculate the surface-tunnel P-wave refraction tomogram. The results from the study were used to constrain the design, and for the acquisition and processing of the real surface and in-mine seismic surveys acquired under the FUTURE project.

This paper presents a novel holistic healthy human framework for C-suite executives and senior leaders in the minerals industry. The value-add of the framework centres around the integration of inner holistic health and interpersonal holistic health to support and enhance environment, social, and governance transformation, with a focus on the social enterprise. The framework unpacks key components of holistic health and their interlinkages to environment, social, governance, and stakeholder engagement. Insights were gleaned from interviews with 10 C-suite executives, each with over twenty years of experience in mining or business leadership. By applying the holistic healthy human framework, industry leaders can strengthen the social licence to operate and positively transform the industry's public image. Broader application to other sectors is underway.

A research project was carried out on a gold mine in the Vaal River region of South Africa (Witwatersrand Basin) to evaluate the effect of two particular aspects of rockbolt installation – the angle of inclination of the bolt relative to the orientation of the rock surface, and the protruding length of the bolt – on the mine’s gully support system. A keyblock analysis approach indicated that these factors do not have an adverse impact on the stability of the strike gullies. This was confirmed by extensive empirical data collected from the case study mine. While safety is the primary concern, cost saving opportunities can be realized through reconsidering historically inherited support standards that are perceived to be correct and appropriate. The research described in this paper sets forth a practical approach, that is easy to implement and repeatable, to evaluate the role of rockbolts in stoping gullies.

The shear behaviour of infilled joints produced from ordinary gypsum plaster (gyprock) and bentonite was investigated in the laboratory under Constant Normal Stiffness (CNS) conditions. Shear tests were performed on saw-tooth profiles having Joint Roughness Coefficients (JRC) of 4.75 and 9.25 under an initial normal stress (sno) of 0.30 to 1.10 MPa, and at a normal stiffness (kn) of 8.5 kN/mm. Test data under the same sno and infill thickness to asperity height ratio (t/a) were analysed for two different sets of JRC. The peak shear stress plotted against the t/a ratio under constant sno revealed an increase in peak shear stress with the increase in JRC, up to a t/a ratio of about unity. The effect of roughness on the peak shear stress was observed to be minimal when the t/a ratio exceeded 1.40. A mathematical model for the prediction of peak shear stress due to the increased infill thickness has been developed based on a hyperbolic stress-strain relationship and energy balance principles. The model predictions are in good agreement with the laboratory observations. Le comportement de cisaillement des joints remplis produits à partir de plâtre ordinaire et de bentonite a été étudié dans le laboratoire sous des conditions de rigidité normales constantes. Des essais de cisaillement ont été réalisés sur des profils en dents de scie ayant des coefficients de rugosité des joints (CRJ) variant de 4,75 à 9,25 sous un effort normal initial (sno) de 0,30 à 1,10 MPa, et une rigidité normale (kn) de 8,5 kN/mm. Le résultat des essais conduits sous la même contrainte et épaisseur de remplissage au rapport aspérité/hauteur (t/a) ont été analysés pour deux ensembles différents de CRJ. La variation de l'effort de cisaillement maximal contre le rapport t/a sous une contrainte normale constante a indiqué une augmentation de l'effort de cisaillement maximal avec l'augmentation du CRJ, jusqu'à un rapport de t/a proche de l'unité. L'effet de la rugosité sur l'effort de cisaillement maximal a été minimal quand le rapport t/a a excédé 1,40. Un modèle mathématique pour la prévision de l'effort de cisaillement maximal dû à l'épaisseur accrue du remplissage des joints a été développé sur la base de la variation entre contraintes hyperboliques et déformation et sur des principes de bilan énergétique. Les prévisions du modèle sont en bon accord avec les observations de laboratoire. Das Scherverhalten in mit gewöhnlichem Gips und Bentonit gefüllten Klüften wurde im Labor unter Bedingungen konstanter Normalsteifheit (CNS) untersucht. Scherversuche wurden durchgefürt für Sägezahnprofile mit Werten des Fugenrauhigkeitskoeffizienten (JRC) von 4.75 und 9.25 unter Normalspannungs-werten (sno) von 0.30 bis 1.10 MPa, und bei Normalsteifheit (kn) von 8.5 kN/mm. Testresultate für gleiche Werte von sno und Verhältnis Fülldicke zu Rauhigkeit (t/a) wurden untersucht für zwei verschiedene Werte von JRC. Die Beziehung zwischen maximaler Schubspannung und und t/a Verhältnis unter konstantem sno zeigte einen Anstieg der maximalen Schubspannung mit zunehmendem JRC, bis zu einem t/a Verhältnis von etwa 1.0. Der Einfluss der Rauhigkeit auf den Maximalwert der Schubspannung war minimal solange das t/a Verhältnis den Wert von 1.40 überstieg. Ein mathematisches Modell wurde entwickelt für die Vorhersage der Schubspannung die von zusätzlicher Fülldicke erwartet werden kann, ausgehend von einer hyperbolischen Spannungs-Dehnung Beziehung und dem Energiegleichgewichts-prinzip. Die Modellvorhersagen zeigten gute Uebereinstimmung mit den Laborbeobachtungen.

The intention is to solve a series of problems in the flotation and desiliconisation of complex bauxite; aiming to achieve monomer dissociation of target minerals based on process mineralogy. According to the mineral surface, there are differences in physical and chemical properties and the molecular design theory of flotation agents. Designing the polar and non-polar groups of the bauxite flotation collector to make the reagent group easily combine with the mineral to form a cyclic chelate, will enhance the collection performance, and strengthen the drug selection performance. Developing a new type of positive flotation collector for bauxite with small dosage, strong selectivity and low foam volume. A two-dimensional finite difference model has been developed to describe the reduction of kilogram quantities of dehydrated phosphogypsum. The model’s scope has been limited to focus on the heat transfer and reactions that occur within a mass of material contained in a vessel inside a furnace rather than also including the effects of heat transfer to the vessel. Changes in the heat transfer properties (k, ρ, and Cp) are incorporated as the composition of the mass changes as the chemical reactions progress. The model is validated against experimental data, with samples heated to 1000°C at 3°C min−1 while purging with nitrogen gas. A sensitivity analysis of model predictions to the pre-exponential factor of the reaction rate constant of the main chemical reaction and the thermal conductivity of the powder bed indicated that, at the envisaged process conditions, the behaviour of the system depends much more on the rate of heat transfer than on the rate of the chemical reaction. The model demonstrated a significant increase in accuracy when the thermal conductivity was modelled to increase linearly with temperature compared to assuming a constant value.

A mine is essentially a series of operations, including drilling and blasting, crushing, milling, flotation, and leaching, that are interconnected and therefore interrelated, with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often causes potential economic benefits and energy savings to be missed. However, the PIO methodology is a thorough approach which considers these individual process activities within the context of the whole process. The basic principle is to optimize the process as a whole, rather than each process step in isolation from the others. Metso?s Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) group offers a global consulting service for the mining and construction industries. A significant amount of this consulting work involves process integration and optimization (PIO) studies. When conducting a PIO study, every aspect of the process is considered. In addition to drilling and blasting, transportation, handling and storage, crushing, screening, grinding, flotation, separation, and recovery, other aspects including equipment utilization and energy consumption and even greenhouse gas emissions are also included if necessary. In a PIO project, it is very important to understand what type of material is being processed at any point in time. That is, which domain or domains is the material part of? This is necessary in order to observe the effect of different ore sources (and the blending of sources) on concentrator performance. Linking the ore from the pit to the concentrator required the development of an ore tracking system. As a result, PTI developed a radio-frequency based material tracking system called SmartTag?. This system allows tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles, and finally into the concentrator. Using the SmartTag? system, definitive correlations can be made between the performance of the plant and the plant feed characteristics, including the domain from which the feed ore originated. Since its commercialization in 2007, SmartTag? has been used in the majority of PTI?s consulting projects and several permanent systems have been installed worldwide1. Successful applications of the SmartTag? system have encouraged development to allow the system to be used in a wider variety of plants, in particular plants with finer crushing and screening stages. This paper describes how the SmartTag? system is being utilized by PTI and the benefits being gained by its use in PIO projects, as well as presenting some case studies.

The initial evaluation of a coal deposit often raises uncertainty with regard to the accuracy of the reported Resources and Reserves. Reconciliation of results from mining and beneficiation with the original raw field data highlights deficiencies in original estimations. Credible Resource and Reserve estimation forms the basis on which an entire mining enterprise is motivated, initiated, funded, and established as a commercially viable proposition. This is required for sustainable extraction purposes and to support vital downstream industries such as power generation. Accurate determination of the density of the matrix of the material being evaluated is the key to credible values being obtained for Resources and Reserves. Losses between 15% and 20% of the Resource/Reserve can be realized if incorrect densities are applied to the tonnage derivation. Coal plies and particles have different relative densities, determined by the maceral composition, rank, and mineral and moisture content. These factors in turn contribute to the moisture, volatile matter, ash and carbon contents of a coal, which affect the overall density of the raw coal. More specifically, the relationship of ash to density and the effective matrix porosity were found to be critical in solving the greater majority of the problems in predictive calculations. A major deficiency identified is the inability to determine effective porosity, allowing absorption of adventitious moisture and altering the mass of the core sample. Although the volume of the raw material is altered through crushing, the change in mass after controlled air-drying, used with the original geometrical volume of the raw material, provides a credible air-dry density and allows the determination of the volumetric change related to effective porosity. This parameter can be validated through the evaluation of proximate ash using the ash-adjusted algorithm and a correction for the inherent moisture applied to also give a credible relative density value for an air-dried sample. A combination of theoretical, empirical, and reconciliatory evaluations of the available data, taken from the exploration phase through the mining process to final production, has shown that an integrated approach using the ash-adjusted density (AAD) methodology, in conjunction with other evaluative techniques, provides credible results with a considerably higher degree of accuracy than is currently possible.

Methane explosions in underground coal mines are a major concern across the mining industry. After the Pike River disaster, Arnot Coal became even more aware of the explosion risk. To determine whether Arnot has adequate precautions against a methane explosion, such as the one that led to the Pike River disaster, a literature survey covering the causes of the incident and what preventative measures should have been in place was conducted. Many different methane explosion prevention methods were evaluated, as well as codes of practice. Based on the findings, Arnot?s measures to prevent conditions favourable for a methane explosion were evaluated.

In the mineral processing industry, Ni-Cu-Fe-S converter matte is leached to remove base metals from a concentrate containing platinum group metals (PGMs). We investigated the atmospheric leaching process to develop a better understanding of the leaching behaviour of the base metals (Cu, Fe, and Ni) and the PGMs, in particular Ru, Ir, and Rh with respect to key process variables, acid concentration, and Cu concentration under oxidative and non-oxidative conditions. With oxidative leaching, a higher initial acid concentration resulted in higher Cu, Ni, and Fe extractions, as well as faster leaching reaction rates. A higher initial acid concentration also resulted in faster precipitation of Cu, Ru, and Ir under oxidizing conditions. Under non-oxidative conditions, Ni and Fe extraction was much slower, and the effect of initial acid concentration on Cu precipitation was less pronounced. The initial Cu concentration had a slightly smaller effect on the leaching behaviour of Fe and Ni, as well as precipitation of Ru, Ir and Rh. Moreover, a higher initial Cu concentration suppressed both Ni and Fe leaching and had a slight inhibiting effect on the precipitation behaviour of Cu, Ru, and Ir.

"The Collieries Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa is developing a coherent system of programs to aid in the full spectrum of activities arising in the planning of new as well as operating mining enterprises. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the design and application of two subsystems in the complex.One of these subsystems is an initial version of a production simulator. This program draws upon a model of a mining enterprise and simulates the operational and financial aspects of a set of alternative mine production plans.These plans are specified in terms of proposed sequences of operations. Details such as reserves, production rates, resource requirements and so on, are taken from the model.Physically, the model takes the form of a cross-referenced data base, maintained by means of a general file maintenance system which is another subsystem described.The paper concludes with a description and analysis of the first practical application of the two programs."

The presentation proved to be of great interest to the meeting and lively discussion followed the talk. Mr N. A. "Since 1964, Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd., has been developing and using production scheduling methods for optimizing its metallurgical operations in the short term (up to one year). Medium-range metallurgical planning has been possible only by successive evaluations of a single-year L.P. A modified version of Rosenbrock's direct search technique has now been developed to allow multi-year optimization of both mining and metallurgy for medium-range planning. The modifications to the search technique have produced a marked increase in computational efffciency for this heavily constrained problem in many variables and the system is a usable planning tool, given a reasonably powerful computer. The plans are 'optimum' in the sense that they yield the maximum present value of the operations.Each of the resulting five-yearly mine plans forms the basis for further detailed metallurgical evaluation by the established production scheduling system."

"SWOT analyses and the closely related TOWS matrix are frequent starting points for an organization to develop its strategy. The paper deals with the evaluation of the TOWS matrix and presents three novel approaches to evaluate the different factors of the TOWS matrix, namely (1) approach to evaluate the factors with identical weights; (2) approach to evaluate factors with their weights determined within the different quadrants of the TOWS matrix; and (3) approach to evaluate factors with weights determined within the whole TOWS matrix. The third approach has two variants. The proposed approaches to evaluate the TOWS matrix were tested on a SWOT analysis of a significant mining company in the Czech Republic. The results imply that the strategy W-T (weaknesses-threats) is recommended in three cases, while the strategy S-T (strengths-threats) is recommended once. The paper may be valuable for managers responsible for strategic planning.IntroductionThe process of human needs gratification has been closely connected with raw material resources of the planet. In the contemporary socio-economic conditions, the task of the mining company managers, apart from extracting mineral resources, is to meet the owners' intents.The managerial work itself becomes very complex. In mining companies in particular, the complexity is augmented by the characteristics of the business. Undoubtedly, the key factor is that mineral resources cannot be renewed or relocated. Stojanovi (2013) characterizes mining projects as involving great investments in finance and time, as well as consecutive decisions and a 'complex mosaic of numerous unknown factors that affect the value of the project'. He adds that mining projects are typified by a 'number of geological, technological, technical, economic, environmental, social, and financial risks' (Stojanovi , 2013).Inter alia, the managerial work may also be intese due to the dynamic internal and external conditions for the existence of any company (Vane? k, 2014). This tallies with Peter Drucker’s prediction in 1969; that the times at the turn of the millennium could be expected to be turbulent (Drucker, 1969)."

"Despite the pre-eminence of the Jwaneng Diamond Mine as the world’s richest diamond mine, the discovery story has long been clouded in mystery. This is the 45-year old untold story of the Jwaneng discovery and contemporaneous Bechuanaland/Botswana political and socioeconomic history. Diamond exploration by De Beers in Bechuanaland began in 1955, with the first true kimberlite discovery near Letlhakane in 1967, before Clifford’s Rule was applied and before the use of indicator mineral chemistry. Surface deflation soil sampling and bioturbation by termites was the foundation for exploration into the Kalahari. The 1962 reconnaissance programme south of Jwaneng had failed to make any discoveries. Improved sampling methods were applied to the Kalaharicovered areas in 1969 and positive results were received by year-end. The Whateley’s Wish percussion drill-hole in December 1972 was confirmed as Jwaneng 2424D/K2 with drill core in early 1973. Jumper drills were required to penetrate the Kalahari sand cover. Diamond resources were demonstrated despite multiple technical problems. IntroductionThe Jwaneng Diamond Mine is, by value, the world’s richest diamond mine. Harry Oppenheimer is quoted as saying that Jwaneng is ‘the most important primary deposit found anywhere in the world since the discovery at Kimberley more than a century ago.’ (Taylor III, 1982) The mine opened in 1982 after some nine years of evaluation and construction since discovery in February 1973. Debswana (2017) states that 2015 production was 7.87 Mt of ore from which 10.408 million carats were recovered at a grade of 132 carats per 100 t (cpht). Although the value is not reported, it was noted that Jwaneng contributes 60–70% of Debswana’s total revenue from all mines, including Orapa, Damtshaa, and Letlhakane (Debswana, 2017)."
