Equilibrium partial pressures of gaseous HCl and H2O over aqueous binary and ternary solutions of HCl and AICls were calculated or estimated in the range of 20° to 110° C, and up to saturation with AlC13?6H2O. The results were extended to solutions containing less than 10 wt-pct FeCl3 by assuming that FeCl3 and AIC13 are equivalent on the molar basis, since both salts have trivalent cations with a cammon anion. The ionic activity coefficient of HCl and the equilibrium constant for dissolution of gaseous HCl were also computed. This research is part of the effort by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to provide thermodynamic data to expand the technology base relevant to the extraction of alumina from nonbauxitic domestic raw materials.

Approximate equations were used to compute the radiant heating of float coal dust by approaching flames for various combinations of particle size, dust path length (flame travel distance), flame temperature, dust concentration, flame speed, and flame length. The computed values of degree of radiant heating and flame travel distance for preheating the coal dust should be useful for estimating the increased fire hazard of different coal dust-flame parameters. Some findings relating to coal mine disaster control are-- 1. Coal dust clouds cannot be preheated to ignition temperatures by flame radiation alone when deflagration speeds are greater than about 10 m/sec. Thus it appears unlikely that radiation alone will cause flames propagating in dust clouds to accelerate to detonation velocities. 2. Small particles in the radiation flame zone caused by burnout and soot formation increase the degree of preheat significantly. 3. The concentration of float coal dust (radii = 3 to 40 microns) for maximum radiant heating usually peaks in the range 50 to 200 mg/liter of air.

Continuous remote sensing of air speed In underground mine airways. Approach An ultrasonic technique measures a form of air turbulence which is proportional to air velocity. How It Works The stainless-steel enclosed transducer consists of a sensing head with circuitry, and a telemetry card. The sensor uses a patented ultrasonic technique to measure a form of turbulence created In the air. This turbulence, known as vortex shedding, is related to the air speed through the sensor. Air flowing past a cylindrical post creates vortices which flow down the air stream on both sides of the post. Pulses from an ultrasonic transmitter pass through the vortices to a receiver; the effect of the vortices on the pulses is a measure of air velocity. The transducer contains a telemetry card, known as an accessor, which transmits reports on air velocity through a pair of wires to a monitoring system. The accessor contains an analog-to-digital converter and digital telemetry circuitry required for computer system operation. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch-and small-scale continuous flotation processing tests on waste granite fines from Georgia, to determine the feasibility of recovering usable feldspar and quartz products by flotation. Two flotation methods were utilized for the removal of biotite and other iron-bearing minerals: One was in an acid-cationic circuit, and the other in an alkaline-anionic-cationic circuit. Feldspar was recovered using an acid-cationic method. To produce commercial-grade feldspar and quartz products it was necessary to employ either two sequential froth flotation circuits or one froth flotation circuit supplemented by wet-magnetic separation techniques to remove iron contaminants. Continuous flotation processing yielded a commercial-grade feldspar concentrate containing, in percent, 3.8 Na20, 5.4 K20, and 1.10 CaO, with recoveries of 77.8, 70.3, and 64.4, respectively. The feldspar tailing was high-quality glass sand containing 98.2 percent SiO2 and 0.024 percent Fe2O3. About 42 percent of the quartz was recovered at glass sand specifications. An effective separation of, potash feldspar from the bulk feldspar concentrate was achieved by batch flotation in a mineral separation cell.

The Bureau of Mines investigated carbonyl processing techniques for the recovery of the critical metals Ni, Co, Mn, and Cr from domestic primary and secondary sources. In most cases, the source materials require reductive precarbonylation treatment to metallize the contained Fe, Ni, and Co compounds to render them reactive with CO. The critical metals were recovered either by direct conversion to the respective carbonyls or as upgraded products by carbonyl removal of an undesirable metal. Best metal-to-metal carbonyl conversion was under CO pressure, from 80 atm upward, and at 1400 C. Carbonylation was accelerated by the addition of HzS in small quantities. CO pressure, temperature, promoter and pretreatment trends, and other factors enhancing metal carbonyl formation are presented.

That a close analogy exists between the flow of air in mines and the flow of current in electrical networks- has been known for a long time. The laws that have been used to solve series and parallel electrical circuits have been used to solve for the equivalent resistance in mine ventilation problems. Kirchhoff's current and voltage laws have also been adopted in solving mine ventilation network problems. It will be best to define a few terms here regarding networks, and with reference to Figure 1, these definitions can be elucidated. Figure 1 can be represented by the network in Figure 2 without losing any essential details. 1. A junction is a point where two or more airways meet. 2. The segment of a roadway connecting any two junctions is known as a branch. 3. A mesh is a closed path through the network. In the above network, B, C, D and F are the junctions, CF and CD are two of the branches and CFDC is a mesh. Kirchhoff's current law states that the sum of currents entering a junction. Applying this law to the junctions in the ventilation network, one obtains for junctions C and F, the following relationships: JUNCTION C: Q1 = Q4 + Q3 (1) JUNCTION F: Q2 + Q3 = Q5 (2) Similar relationships can be drawn for other junctions. Crosson and Peters treat the errors that result in miner location due to errors in the overburden earth model used for computing location. A parallel effort by J. Powell of PMSRC is discussed here, where the location method used is that of the Westinghouse location program - "Miner". This location program was tested by Powell by using arrival times generated from the overburden earth model of Table l* rounded to the nearest millisecond. Location computations were then made using 3 geophones at a time. The average location is tabulated for all geophone triplets except when 3 geophones are in line. Geophone arrays were as shown in Tables 2 and 3. The manner in which the test was done is illustrated in Figure 1. I. SUMMARY OF RESULTS The arrival time differences, based on the Table 1 earth model, together with geophone locations based on the array geometries of Tables 2 and 3, were entered into the computer, together with a stated depth of 700 feet and an estimated overburden seismic velocity of 10,000 feet per second. These parameter values were processed by the location program - "Miner". Figure 2 illustrates the interpretation of the plots and data. The tabular data and plots of Table 4 and Figures 3, 4, and 5 illustrate the location error results obtained. These plots indicate that for sources within the array, the errors are considerably less than the measured errors obtained during field tests of the present location system. The possible reasons for this discrepancy are noted in Part Eight (Earth Models).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Congress are presently considering several approaches aimed at reducing the amount of lead in the environment and society's exposure to lead. One approach is to tax domestic primary lead production or consumption. Objective To assist the Congress and the EPA in their decisionmaking, a study was initiated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, which assesses the minerals related implications of a tax on U.S. primary lead production and primary lead imports. This investigation analyzes the impacts of a primary lead lax on: (1) domestic primary lead production, (2) domestic lead coproduct and byproduct production (including bismuth, cadmium, germanium, indium, silver, and zinc production), (3) domestic secondary lead production, (4) lead imports, (5) domestic lead recycling activity, and (6) the U.S. lead price. Study Findings Domestic Primary Lead and Primary Lead Coproduct and Byproduct Production. A quantitative analysis based on the application of the Bureau's Supply Availability System (SAM) has been conducted to determine the impacts on domestic primary lead and primary lead coproduct and byproduct production from domestic lead source material for a range of taxes.

Longwall production levels are high, and there are several different sources of dust to contend with. If dust levels are high, the initial effort should be devoted to finding which source is the cause. Then, efforts to reduce dust can be concentrated where they will have the most impact. To control dust at longwalls, a large amount of ventilation air and spray water must be used. The water must be sprayed correctly so as not to blow dust into the walkway. Techniques to change local airflow patterns can be helpful. The shearer-clearer, as well as gob and wing curtains, are examples of such techniques. The Bureau of Mines conducted an experimental degasification project in Island Creek Coal Co.'s Virginia Pocahontas No. 5 mine. Methane from the over- lying Pocahontas No. 4 coalbed was entering mine workings in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed through fractures in the roof rock. Small-diameter (1-5/8-inch) holes were drilled into the overlying coalbed to reduce the gas pressure and intercept methane flows, which were piped to the surface through an under- ground 6-inch-diam steel pipeline. The total methane flow rate from the vertical holes averaged 150,000 ft3/day for the first month. Methane flows into the mine were reduced by 47 pct, thereby demonstrating the effectiveness of this form of degasification in reducing ventilation requirements and providing a safer working environment.

This chapter includes tables for 1981 that were not available in time for publication of the 1981 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1982. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1982 was estimated at about $20 billion, a decrease of $5 billion compared with that of 1981. The decline in value is the first since 1971 and is the largest percentage drop since 1938. Although the domestic mining industry continued to be troubled by difficulties in attracting capital and by import competition from countries with lower overall production costs, the principal cause of the decline was sharply decreased demand brought on by the worldwide economic slowdown. Metal commodities were impacted most severely with only 4 of 21 metals registering production value gains and only 3 of 21 showing production quantity increases. Overall metal production value decreased 37% from that of 1981, a reflection of the domestic slowdown in the automobile and construction industries, which are major metal users, Overall production value of nonmetals decreased 12% compared with that of 1981, with only 14 out of 44 nonmetals showing increases. Nonmetal production quantities increased over 1981 for only 6 of the 44 nonmetals.

"Introduction. The first short—flame explosives were made in the United States during the year 1902, then the mount was 11,300 pounds. In 1902 they were designated ""permissible explosives"", and were required to meet specific tests. By 1912 the total consumption thereof had increased to 24,630,000 pounds, equal to 5 per cent of the total quantity of all kinds of explosives produced in this country; while in 1922 the total was 43,429,000 Pounds, or 10 per cent of the production, and 18 per cent of the explosives used for the mining of coal.Each year the Bureau compiles statistics of explosives, one important object of this being to show the extent to which permissible explosives are replacing other classes of explosives in coal—mining operations, and the influence of such replacement in reducing the number of accidents caused by explosives in this class of mines. The consumption of permissible since 1916 has considerably exceeded the quantity of high explosives (dynamites, etc.) used in coal mines. While the increase in use of permissible is good, the replacement of other explosives therewith is not nearly as good as with be, considering the known general efficacy and safety of permissibles."

Improve underground long-hole drilling efficiency and safety by developing a lightweight, easily transportable drilling pust that can be adjusted to fit a range of mine opening heights. Background Standard one-piece commercially available steel posts weigh approximately 10 pounds per foot. Transporting these posts underground and carrying them over obstacles and through small mine doors is very difficult. Because the length of a one-piece post cannot be adjusted, variations in mine opening height at the drilling site must be accommodated. This is accomplished by stacking several wooden blocks to form a base for the post, resulting in a dangerously unstable drilling setup. The only alternative to this unstable setup is to obtain a longer post. There problems can be reduced by the use of a two-piece telescoping aluminum post having a 3-foot adjustment range in 6-inch increments. The two-piece extendable post will be easy to transport and carry underground. It will fit any opening height within its adjustment range. One large wooden block is used as a base and one cap block is used at the top to bear against the mine roof. This arrangement results in a stable, rigid setup.

"Three types of respiratory apparatus namely, gas masks, hose masks, and self-contained oxygen-breathing apparatus - are now commonly used for protection from noxious gases, vapors, and smokes or ristes, but no particular type can be selected as best for all conditions. Many factors must be considered in connection with each situation, so that each must be considered as a problem in itself. Following are concise statements for comparing the types:Gas masks are the simplest and easiest to wear, also the least cumber-sore; but they protect only in comparatively low concentrations of noxious gases and should never be used where the air contains less than 16 per cent of oxygen. Special masks give protection from one gas or class of gases, but may give no protection against another gas or class of gases.Hose masks protect in any irrespirable atmosphere, but are somewhat cumbersome, the length of hose limiting the distance a wearer may go from fresh air. They are serviceable also where a supply of pure air moves with the wearer, as where a locomotive engineer in a smoky tunnel is using a hose mask supplied with air from the compressed air line of the locomotive. Hose masks consume no chemicals or materials and so are not limited in the time they may be used.Self-contained oxygen-breathing apparatus protect in any irrespirable atmosphere, but their weight is cumbersome, they can be used only by trained men, and frequent attention must be given them to maintain good working condition. On the other band they are the only safe means for exploring mines and other places filled with irrespirable gases in high concentrations."

Experiments were undertaken to evaluate the flammability of typical noise abatement materials used to line the cab interior of mobile mining equipment. The experiments were conducted using three different experimental configurations: 1. A ventilated tunnel test. 2. A full-size cab test where the interior surfaces were lined with the sample material and then ignited near the floor using a methane-air burner. 3. Standard ASTM E-162 tests using a radiant panel test apparatus. This paper describes the tests and presents the results obtained for 15 to 20 different materials of various chemical compositions and thickness. With one exception, materials that did not exhibit flame spread in the tunnel test also performed well in the full-scale cab test. All materials that had passed only a small-scale flammability test, such as SAE J369, failed dramatically in all three of the above test configurations. With one exception, all materials that performed well in the full-scale cab test had flame spread indices < 25, based upon the ASTM E-162 results. The lone exception had an ASTM E-162 flame spread index of 68. With regard to samples that failed the full-scale cab test, the carbon monoxide levels within the cab reached lethal concentrations in the range of 1.8% to 3.8% within 2 minutes from ignition of the sample—dramatically illustrating the severe fire environment that can result within the cab space.

"INTRODUCTION A fire started about 10 a.m., November 10, 1947, at the Kings mine, Princeton Mining Co., Princeton, Ind., about 1,800 feet inby the main shaft bottom on the main west haulage road at a point estimated to be 2 miles from the faces of the main west entries. No lives were lost, as 27 men escaped from the mine after a series of explosions, which necessitated sealing the mine on the surface. This information circular shows"" how adverse conditions might be overcome, when reopening a sealed mine, by expert planning and close cooperation on the part of various organizations. Conditions found in the mine after it was reopened were comparable to the worst that had been anticipated, yet the mine was recovered with comparatively little difficulty and a minimum of risk. The open workings in the mine covered a vast area, but most of the mine resumed production of coal after being sealed for only 37 days.The information contained herein also points to the desirability of adhering as closely as possible to a predetermined schedule of operations."

"Cooperation was arranged between the mine operators, the Michigan College of Mines and Technology, and the Bureau of Mines for a study of present milling practice in the copper district of Michigan. Work was actively commenced in January, 1928.In Michigan copper occurs almost wholly as native copper. An insignificant amount of copper sulphide is present. The native copper occurs in two general classes of formations--namely, amygdalaid and conglomerate.In respect to ore dressing, the outstanding peculiarities of the two types of copper are: (1) In the amygdaloid, the relative coarseness of the metallic copper, which is almost completely liberated at approximately 48-mesh comminution; (2) the sprangly and flakey physical character of much of the liberated copper after crushing; (3) in the conglomerate, the extremely fine dissemination of the metallic copper, which is not completely liberated by crushing to -200 mesh.Because the study to date has been confined almost wholly to amygdaloid ores, the conglomerate class is not considered herein. The conglomerate ore is being efficiently treated, and the loss of copper is small.The amygdaloid ore contains a silicious gangue of which 80 per cent has a specific gravity of less than 2.84, 92 per cent of less than 2.94, and 98 per cent of less than 3.17. Epidote of 3.25 specific gravity is noticeably present, and accumulates on the table concentrators, from which it is hard to make clean con¬centrate and middling recovery.The general nature of the amygdaloid ores varies a little from mine to mine, but the general characteristics are the same, as is shown later by flotation tests."

The mineral industry in Burundi continued to be a minor contributor to the 1980 gross domestic product (GDP) estimated at $293 million in constant 1970 prices.2 Mineral export revenues, primarily from cassiterite, increased by a factor of 15 between 1979-80, reaching approximately $434,000 by yearend 1980. Gold, bastnasite, colombite-tantalite, and wolfremite continued to be exploited on a small scale, using manual and semimechanical methods. Despite a sharp decline in mining activities during 1979, attributed to a lack o? profitability and shortage of construction materials, the mining sector exhibited signs of recovery during 1980. The mineral exploration budget grew 32% over 1979 levels and was equivalent to approximately $42,000 in 1980. In addition, the Burundi Geographical Institute (IGE BU) was created in September 1980 and given responsibilities to collect cartographic, topographic, hydrogeologic, and other geomorphological data., SONIBUROM, the Burundian and Romanian Government joint mineral corporation, conducted mineral deposit inventories during 1979-80 and has been charged with exploiting some of these as yet unspecified resource areas. Another Burundian-Romanian effort, called Mabaya-Butahana, was initiated to search for gold deposits. Meanwhile on the Ruzizi plain, alluvial gold prospecting, with an estimated grade between 0.2 to 1.0 gram per ton, was carried out on a small scale.

A dilute sulfuric-acid leach was developed for extracting lead and copper from lead blast furnace mattes and the chemistry was defined. The possible application of Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans to the problem of salvaging lead and copper from blast furnace mattes was also investigated. Operating conditions were varied to determine their effect on the oxidation and hence extraction of lead and copper from the matte. Conditions varied were temperature, pH, reaction time, aeration in the slurry, and particle size of the matte. A set of optimum conditions were developed that resulted in maximum lead and copper sulfide oxidation. Tests employing these optimum conditions resulted in 82.3 percent of the lead and 98.7 percent of the copper being extracted by a dilute acid leach, while maximum lead and copper extracted using F. ferrooxidans was 69.8 percent of the lead and 78.4 percent of the copper. Tests conducted with a different sample of blast furnace matte indicated that the dilute acid leach might have wide application in extracting lead and copper from other such blast furnace mattes.

A computer model of an existing mine ventilation system can be executed using data developed from ventilation survey results. This model can then be used to analyze and evaluate proposed modifications to the system. The acquisition of field measurements during a ventilation survey and the corresponding development of this information into computer input data have been discussed in detail in the preceding chapters. In this chapter, the data are used in computer-oriented analysis of the mine ventilation system. The PSU/MVS was selected for use because of its advanced capabilities. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine chosen for this application is located in Western Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh coal seam, having an average height of 5-1/4 to 6-1/2 ft, is mined under approximately 300 to 500 ft of cover. The mine preparation plant and shipping facilities are located at the seam outcrop along a river; mining has progressed from the outcrop to an area about 10 miles from the pit mouth so that there are extensive worked-out areas through which access is maintained to the current mining area. Coal haulage is by conveyor to an underground transfer point, located four miles from the pit mouth, and then by high speed rail haulage to the preparation plant. The rail haulage link is scheduled for replacement by a conveyor in the near future. Mining at the present time is limited to the room and pillar method using continuous miners. Longwall mining had been attempted in the past with only limited success; as a result, several panels originally laid out for longwall mining are currently being extracted by room and pillar work.
