How It Works A drill-split fragmentation machine that combines a drill and a unique splitter has been developed. The drill and splitter are mounted on a carriage that positions the splitter in a hole immediately after it is made by the drill. The splitter creates force loads that cause the rock to fragment, and the process is repeated for excavation. The unique splitter applies both radial and axial loads to the rock mass, which produces an excavation action comparable to pulling a plug. This excavation action distinguishes the radial-axial splitter from typical demolition splitters, which require a free surface parallel to the axis of the splitter toward which to break rock.

Columbium, tantalum, titanium, and zirconium are present in solid waste products generated by the chlorination of rutile used for production of titanium tetrachloride (TiC14). The columbium and tantalum were separated from titanium and zirconium by liquid-liquid extraction techniques using a secondary amine. Salts of these elements are in a leach liquor produced by water leaching of mineral waste from the chlorination of rutile. This waste, produced at the rate of approximately 50,000 tons per year, is about 40 wt pct water soluble. Leach liquors, separated by filtration, were further separated into a solid fraction and a liquid fraction by pressure hydrolysis, The solid fraction containing Cb, Ta, Ti, and Zr was dissolved in HC1-HF and used as a feed solution. Columbium and tantalum were removed from the organic extractant with 1 [N] HC1. A miniature 10-stage reactor showed that the columbium and tantalum present in solution could be separated with a continuous flow.

During the past quarter century, coal mine geologists have evolved from providing a qualitative description of drill core and coal reserves into quantitative geotechnical specialists who bridge the gap between geology and engineering. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, hazard prediction mapping was in its infancy. At best, hazard maps identified rudimentary structures and conditions such as stream valley locations, sandstone/shale transition zones, and lineaments. A “technical disconnect” had existed between geologists and mining engineers as each profession operated largely independent of each other. Engineers did not readily integrate geology and geologic conditions, with the exception of coal thickness, into mine planning. Geologists were relied upon for reserve estimates and did not participate in mine planning or design. The employment and market slump of the 1980’s and 1990’s combined with mining more challenging reserves mandated that this gap be bridged and forced geologists to learn to speak more “numerically” to engineers so they could be understood. The purpose of this paper is to describe the procedures and thought processes used by coal mine geologists when determining various mineability and reserve extraction feasibility issues. The paper will also address underground geologic hazard mapping and prediction techniques. To achieve these objectives, the opinions and experiences of leading coal mine geologists, geotechnical and strata control specialists across the United States were solicited.

Sections 120 and 121 of Article XI. Fire Control, of a proposed Mine Safety Law in preparation, to be used as desired and when approved by any State, contains these provisions: After the adoption of these regulations, no mine operator shall erect any nonfireproof structure within 50 feet of any mine entrance. or airway. Every operating mine having nonfireproof structures within 50 feet of any mine entrance or airway, except headframes necessary for hoisting, shall have such structures fireproofed or removed and replaced with fireproof structures within six months of the adoption of these regulations. Before reopening, mines idle at the time of the adoption of these regulations shall have all non- fireproof structures fireproofed, removed, or replaced with fire- proof structures as required by the foregoing sentence. Upon receipt of the written statement of a mine operator that the fireproofing of existing structures is impracticable, the chief mining engineer (of the State commission) shall satisfy himself as to the abouracy of the statement. If he concurs that fireproofing is impracticable, and if at the same time he holds the opinion that adequate protection can be provided otherwise by such procedure, he shall have authority to issue a written permit for the substitution of fireproof door at or near portals of mine openings and collars: of shafts. Such doors shall fit as nearly gas-tight as possible. and shall be installed in such a way that the mouths of mine open- ings can be closed readily from outside of structures. The effec- tiveness of such permit may be made contingent upon the operator's continued compliance with any additional precautions which are necessary in the chief mining engineer's opinion to protect the lives of miners.

"The American Consul at Guatemala City reports that the Guatemala Marble Mining Company is preparing to operate a marble quarry about 13 miles from the railroad station of Zacapa, which station is a little over 100 miles from Puerto Barrios, the nearest port from which the product may be shipped. The deposit is extensive, and though somewhat broken up in places, great quantities of sound marble are available. It is claimed that the marble is equal in quality to the best product of the Italian Carrara quarries.Access to the quarry by rail is obtained by a spur track of the International Railways of Central America (Ferrocarril Internacional de Centro America) from Marmol, 3 miles south of Zacapa. This spur is about 5 miles long and terminates at the foot of the mountains. A double-track incline cable-way 2000 feet in length has been constructed to bring the marble down the mountain. From the top of the incline to the quarry there is a railway six miles in length over which the rock will be hauled by two side-geared Shay locomotives."

Provide a low-cost, low-maintenance method for im¬proving mine water quality on abandoned mine land (AML) sites. Approach A model (figure 1) is presented for selecting, designing, and sizing one or several passive mine drainage treatment systems that can be used in remediation of AML. The three principal types of passive mine drainage technologies for the treatment of coal mine drainage are an aerobic system, a compost wetland, and an anoxic limestone drain. The multistep approach presented here provides a simplified method to characterize the type and magnitude of the water quality problem and then to select either a single treatment system or a combination of treatment systems to address the specific site situation. How It Works Step 1. Discharge Characterization. Characterization of the discharge consists of measuring the discharge flow rate and collecting water samples at the point of discharge for chemical analysis. Both the flow rate and chemistry of a discharge can vary seasonally and in response to storm events. It is important to account for this variability by determining flow rates and water chemistry under various conditions. Water should be analyzed for pH, dissolved iron (Fe), alkalinity, and hot acidity (using the H2O2 method).

The question of earth models has repeatedly arisen in our work. An accurate representation of the seismic properties is required for three reasons: 1.To be able to determine from a set of received arrival times, the location of a seismic source in the earth, and secondly the degree of accuracy required in the model used for calculating source location from the set of arrival time differences. 2. To be able to determine the expected arrival times at an array of geophones produced in response to a hypothetical source in the earth. 3. To be able to estimate received signal strengths more accurately. The work reported here on earth models is based on information from sever- al consultants and from others who expressed an interest in the problem and supplied information to us. II. COAL MINE GEOLOGY On one of our earlier assignments for the Bureau of Mines, Earth Science Research Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts prepared for us a short description of the lithology to be expected at coal mine sites. This description follows, together with the ranges of compressional seismic velocities (Figure I*) associated with typical materials comprising the layered structure of a coal mine area. Coal is primarily associated with fresh water sediments including sandstones, shales, and clays, and occasionally may be metamorphased to varying degrees. In the Appalachian Basin the coal beds occur within cyclical sequences of non-marine shales, sands tones, conglomerates, limes tones, and clays. The beds range in thickness from a few inches to 60 feet, averaging between 2 feet and 10 feet. They have generally broad areal extent, occasionally up to 5,000 square miles, and have an overall tabular or lens-like shape. Within a particular lens, local changes in thickness are normal.

HAVIC is a collaboration of investigators from North America, Sweden, and Finland having a scientific mandate from NIOSH, to study the exposure response relationship between vibratory tool exposure and adverse health effects. Five cohorts, the Suomossalmi forest workers cohort, Volvo truck cab workers, Connecticut shipyard workers, and matriculating dental hygiene students and experienced dental hygienists have been under study. In the case of shipyard workers, there was survey and tool exposure data from 1988, although detailed subject testing was only available within the timeframe of the study. The truck cab assembly workforce was an inception cohort that had been followed from 1994 along with age-matched controls. The Finnish forest workers had cumulative health data on a cohort (n=52) that had been studied from 1976. For a subset of these subjects, there was detailed tactometry testing in 1990, 1995, and 2003. Accordingly, there was historical as well as new prospective data for the industrial cohorts. The Suomossalmi cohort was reassembled only for our study, which precluded follow-up evaluation and because of retirement is almost certainly the last time this historic group will be studied. The study features are: • Characterization of the exposure response relationship for hand-arm vibration through a study design, incorporating multiple cohorts, some having existing historical data, • Selection of cohorts to include different types of vibration: oscillatory (forest workers) impact (truck cab workers), high frequency (dental hygienists) and mixed (shipyard workers), • Inclusion of two inception cohorts: dental hygiene students and Swedish truck cab workers, • Methods for multi-site and historical integration A description follows. [ ] Methods The study included surveys, physical evaluation, and a selection of battery of “best tests” (cold challenge plethysmography, multi-frequency tactometry, segmental sensory nerve conduction velocity [SNCV]1,2,3) applied across groups to quantify responses to exposure. Exposure monitoring included exposure characterization through daylong data logging at the individual level. Workers at each site were instrumented with a microcomputer-based Vibration Exposure Monitoring (VEM) system, developed at the Biodynamics Laboratory of UCHC and about the size of a police walkie-talkie, to record user-specific tool-operating times, vibrations, and grip forces throughout all, or a representative part, of their workday. More specifically, data logging methods involved the direct monitoring of work cycles, involving tool operation time and measures of tool vibration, namely the root-mean-square (RMS), root-mean-quad (RMQ), and root-mean-oct (RMO), and grip forces, each calculated per minute. For this study, the questionnaire was homogenized with other vibration studies4,5,6. Cross-translation was directed by the multi-lingual investigators, and then reviewed by the study team. Reports that set forth the pertinent facts of existing secondary-recovery operations are an integral part of the work of the Bureau of Mines in promoting conservation and efficient utilization of the petroleum resources of the Nation. Knowledge of the success or failure of waterflood projects in an area is very useful to other operators. Although projects will not have identical results, information concerning the flood performance, method of operation, and difficulties encountered on one project will help operators to determine the feasibility of flooding a similar sand and to select the methods of operation most likely to prove successful. The increasing cost of discovering and developing new oil reserves, as well as the unending effort to reduce operating costs and increase ultimate oil recovery from known petroleum reservoirs, has required the petroleum industry to evaluate continuously the performances of various secondary-recovery methods. Waterflooding was recognized early by the petroleum industry as a possible means of increasing oil recovery. From the early accidental floods in Pennsylvania and through many haphazard attempts to inject eater into oil-bearing formations, waterflooding emerged as one of the more important methods of oil recovery. Waterflooding is important not only to the oil industry but also to the economy of the area concerned.

Research in connection with occupational diseases, including silicosis or, more definitely, pneumoconiosis, has been prosecuted much more actively in North American countries during the past 5 or 10 years than in any other known period. This applies particularly to the United States, owing largely to the fact that in recent years compensation for ill health presumed to be caused by industrial work of certain kinds is being paid to a far greater extent in this country than previously. Most other countries have had occupational-disease laws for many years. Court rulings in the United States, which started 5 or 6 years ago, have given a few heavy verdicts in connection with ill health or death caused, or alleged to have been caused, by some phase of occupational work other than traumatic injury, and these have called attention to the fact that ill health and even incapacitation can be caused by some kinds of employment. With the onset of the world-wide financial depression, which resulted in permanent abandonment of many business or industrial enterprises (among them mines) in the United States, the workers frequently believed that they could expect nothing in the future from their former employers, hence they felt free to demand monetary benefits or damages because of ill health which they suffered, or thought they suffered, because of their previous employment. The result was a flood of lawsuits and. compensation claims for occupational disease, particularly where dust was involved.

This paper describes a focus of work presently being conducted at the Rock Mechanics Research Group at the University of British Columbia. The underhand method under consolidated fill ensures a high recovery under an engineered back that is comprised of cemented rock fill and/or cemented paste fill. This method of mining has been employed successfully in mines throughout North America as a method of mitigating exposure to the operator having to work under a seismically active ?back?. This paper reviews design methodology in the placement and analysis of sill mats with reference to site observation coupled with on going numerical and analytically derived solutions.

The cheapest method of handling gravel in placer mining operations is by hydraulic mining . In working gravel deposits by hydraulic mining , it is essential that an abundant supply of water under sufficient head can be economically developed and that there is sufficient grade for sluice boxes and for disposal of the tailing . Without dumping facilities , simple hydraulic mining is an impossibility . The cost of hydraulic mining may range from 2 cents a yard under favorable condıtions to 12 or even 20 cents under less favorable conditions and to 35 cents or more a yard in Alaska , according to conditions of operation , and if frozen gravel is encountered . When it is necessary to elevate gravel , the costs may exceed 60 cents a cubic yard . When the natural conditions do not permit of hydraulic pining proper , other methods of elevating the grade are employed , some of which are described below . Bucket dredging has replaced hydraulic mining in importance in California and other states where hydraulic mining was once extensively carried on , and is by far the cheapest method of elevating gravel when mechanical methods are required and the physical conditions are suitable for dredging . Dredging costs vary greatly under the different conditions encountered , and the total amount of gold to be recovered must of course be enough to warrant the cost of a dredge installation . Apply state-of-the-art monitoring and computer systems technology to remotely monitor geostructural data and evaluate ground conditions in near real-time. Background Recently, the coal mining industry has progressed dramatically from a labor-intensive industry to highly mechanized and automated systems achieving significantly higher production rates. In underground longwall coal mines, production and face advance rates have increased by almost tenfold in the last 15 to 20 years. With increasingly high advance rates, geologic anomalies which affect rock mass quality are encountered more frequently, far exceeding the current rate at which ground control information can be processed and analyzed. As a result, mine operators find themselves with insufficient time or resources to cope with the rapidly changing ground conditions. To keep up with the technological advancement in mining and the associated ground control problems, the Bureau of Mines is conducting a multi-phase research pro¬gram to implement a computer-assisted Ground Control Management System (GCMS). Research is ongoing at present, but when completed the system will be designed to 1) monitor and evaluate data on rock properties, geologic conditions, and rock mechanics data from underground sensors in near real-time; 2) interpret the analyses to evaluate the interaction between various critical ground control parameters; 3) assess the structural integrity of the mine; and 4) determine failure modes and provide recommendations for control measures, design modifica¬tions, and alternative support procedures. The system will be expanded into its full capability during various phases of this research program.

The Bureau of Mines in its investigations of respiratory apparatus for use in mines and allied industries, tests equipment that is voluntarily submitted by manufacturers in accordance with published schedules of tests. These tests are designed to insure that the equipment has the minimum require- ments for safety in use. Approval certificates are issued for apparatus that meets the bureau's specifications, and the memfacturer is permitted to mark his equipment with a seal showing that it has been approved as "Permissible." A complete list of permissible self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus, gas masks, and hose masks tested before July 1, 1930, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6362.1 The present list includes all equipment tested and approved up to and including April 1, 1931.

To be successful , human exertion employed for the creation of value requires power and heat ; the ability to produce concentrated power in great quantities has resulted in the relatively recent industrial development that is so profoundly affecting the world . In our commercial history , we have advanced through several stages in the selection of the most suitable fuels , continuously striving to increase the flexibility and range of energy- transmission . The easy distribution of light , power and heat is the leading factor in the decentralization of industry which promises to correct some of the serious evils that have followed in the footsteps of our commercial development . The distribution of fuel in quantity in so convenient a form and with such an attractive reliability- factor as can be had with gas , meets the modern conception of efficient service . Natural gas has been used in this country for more than a century, but recently it has attained a prominence far in excess of anything known in its earlier history. We may consider that we are now getting into our real stride in the utilization of our natural- gas resources . : In a country like the United States , wherein we are accustomed to mammoth achievements , we may be inclined to accept casually the noteworthy technical and economic advances which have resulted in the expansion of natural- gas distribution . About three years ago , the transmission of natural gas a distance of more than 250 miles from its source was first accomplished , and this was really a noteworthy engineering feat . Today , this useful commodity is being transported twice that distance , and lines are being laid which will carry gas more than 900 miles from the points of occurrence . Let us not take such outstanding improvements too much as a matter of course ; the industry should be congratulated on its long steps forward .

To clean coal mine air by developing a low-cost scrubber suitable for belt transfer and similar applications. Approach Design a scrubber operated by water only, with no moving parts. Use conventional water spray nozzles located within a duct to both move and clean the air. Use a droplet eliminator to get the water droplets and mist back out of the airstream. How It Works Conventional scrubbers require a mechanical fan driven by either an electric or a hydraulic motor. They also require water sprays and some type of scrubbing mechanism. The water powered scrubber, however, offers higher reliability over conventional scrubbers since it utilizes the water sprays to both move the air and scrub the particulate from the air. Conventional water spray nozzles are placed near one end of a rectangular duct open at both ends. The sprays are directed towards the far end of the duct where a stationary wave blade water droplet eliminator is located. Movement of the water spray droplets coming from the nozzles generates (by momentum transfer) an air movement In the same direction as the sprays. The volume of air moved Is primarily a function of the duct cross-section size, water pressure and water

These publications are confined almost entirely to description of the features contributing directly or indirectly to the prevention of explosion or shock hazards, and are intended to give inspectors, safety engineers, and others already familiar with the general safety requirements more detailed information on the safety features of the design of a particular machine. As a background for papers describing permissible machines and to avoid the necessity of duplicating descriptions of methods of conducting investigations and tests of such machinery, Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine-Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, was pub¬lished in 1929. Three bulletins giving detailed descriptions of the three most numerous types of machines have been issued, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotive and Power Trucks.
