This report abstracts project work performed under USBM Grant GO155003 during the period 4 November 1975 to 3 November 1976. The research was funded, as a continuance of previous support from USBM Grants GO133077 and G0155003, to gain further knowledge in mine electrical system safety. Five reports have been separately produced, all under the grant title, "Coal Mine Electrical System Evaluation," and are as follows: 1. Volume I - Continuous Monitoring, 2. Volume II - Transient Analysis, 3. Volume III - Shielded Cables, 4. Volume IV - Computer Modeling, and 5. Volume V - Battery and Battery-charging Safety. Abstracts of these comprise the balance of this document with one exception. The task ?d-c offsett currents," does not fall under the scope of the other report volumes and, further, the material to be presented does not justify a separate report. Hence, this subject concludes the Executive Summary.

This paper, describing the mining methods and practice at No. 2 mine of the American Zino Co. of Tennessee at Mascot, Tenn., is one of a series of papers issued by the Bureau of Mines presenting the mining methods and costs in various districts throughout the United States. Its purpose is to summarize methods recently put into practice whereby increased efficiency has been effected. These improvements have to do principally with mill-hole mining, slushing, contract labor, and bonuses. In general, this paper supplements earlier articles and brings them up to date. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The author acknowledges the assistance of M. H. Newman, geologist of the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co.; of William Black, assistant superintendent of mines; of P. M. In its program of investigation of deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines did some development drilling at the Tapley deposit in an endeavor to find an additional source of copper. There are accounts that many years ago the property had some production; there are several old, inaccessible shafts apparently sunk on a vein in rhyolite or diabase. The waste dumps of these shafts contain considerable sulfides, chiefly pyrite and chalcopyrite. To cut the vein below the old mine workings, the Bureau of Mines? diamond-drilled five holes aggregating 1,204 feet. No significant copper mineralization was found.

In the three years to June 2005, 959 injuries associated with continuous miners (CMs), shuttle cars (SCs), load-haul-dump and personnel transport (PT) were reported by NSW underground coal mines, comprising 23% of all injuries reported. The present paper reports an analysis of the narrative field accompanying these reports to determine opportunities for controlling injury risks. The most common combinations of activity and mechanism were: strain while handling CM cable (96 injuries); caught between or struck by moving parts while bolting on a CM (86 injuries); strains while bolting on CM (54 injuries); and slipping off a CM during access, egress or other activity (60 injuries). For the other equipment considered, the common injury mechanism was the vehicle running over a pothole or other roadway abnormality causing the driver or passengers to be injured (169 injuries). Potential control measures include: monorails for CM services; hydraulic cable reefers; handrails on CM platforms; redesign of CM platforms and bolting rigs to reduce reach distances during drilling and bolting; improvements to guarding of bolting controls; standardisation and shape coding of bolting controls; two handed fast feed; improvements in underground roadway maintenance, vehicle suspension, visibility and seating; and pedestrian proximity warning devices.

The Bureau of Mines began a comprehensive investigation of the old lead diggings in the Wisconsin portion of the Upper Mississippi lead-zinc field in September 1947 to determine whether enough lead was present in shallow deposits to justify exploitation by modern open-pit methods. Because of the large number of areas of surface diggings, it was necessary to limit the investigation to only a few representative areas. Initial studies, therefore, included test pitting and hand auger-drill sampling at two sites n Grant County and one site in Lafayette County to determine whether further extensive sampling in that area was warranted. Results indicated that certain portions of the area contained substantial amounts of lead and, zinc; accordingly, more detailed sampling was undertaken, and the results will be described in a later report. Another phase of the general investigation was drilling and test pitting at the Nigger Jim Lafayette County. This 10 the third of the series and summarizes the work on the White property to develop the western extension of the Big Dick ere body, where four churn-drill holes totaling 679 feet were drilled. Inclusion of the White property in the study was justified because old reports indicated (1) production of ore from mines in the vicinity disclosed a high ratio of lead to zinc, (2) ore was present in the west heading of the Big Dick mine when it closed, and the attitude of the Big Dick ore body was such that a vertical hole would encounter ore that might be present.

"Oil-shale camps are peculiarly favored, in that before they are establishes it can be ascertained with a degree of certainty, that the life of the project is not limited. Unlike camps at metal mines, where the metal content of a given area is frequently an unknown quantity until after years of development, oil-shale camps should, from the outset, be planned and. built as permanent types of camps. Where this procedure is followed camps will be established which better serve the needs of the industry and the cost of their general care and upkeep will be less.Selection of camp or townsite.The site of the camp or town' whether on company property or not, should be selected with care. It should be separate if possible from the location of the plants of the company so as to be free from noise and fumes and so as to provide a change of environment for employees in going from their work to their homes.The principal features governing the site to be selected are as follows:Drainage. The general contour of the surrounding country should be such that drainage is away from the site. The camp or town should, if practical, be situated on higher ground than that in its immediate vicinity.Soil. The nature of the soil on which the camp or town is located may bear a decided relation to health. A porous, well underdrained top soil of at least four feet in depth insures dryness and facilities the placing of foundations and the laying of water mains and sewer pipes. Such a soil also is an advantage in growing trees, shrubs and grass plots, which are a decided adjunct to making the community attractive.Enviroment. The contiguous territory should afford no unwholesome sur¬roundings such as swamps Or accumulations of stagnant water.General Considerations. The water supply to be provided and the method of disposal of wastes influence to a certain extent the location of the camp or town-site. The means of supplying water, whether by gravity or by pupping, and the disposal of sewage, whether by outfall, system, sewage disposal system through septic tanks, broad irrigation or filter beds, or cesspools will govern the location of the site topographically in relation to source of water and point of disposal of sewage.* This article was prepared as part of the paper ""Use and Supply of Water for the Oil-Shale Industry"" by J. This report deals with the processing and marketing of iron and steal scrap in the intermountain States of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming and the northwestern Plains States of Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The quantity and quality of iron and steel scrap consumed in both the steel mills and iron foundries in these States in 1964 were decided by (1) the type of facilities used to produce an end product; (2) the availability of a dependable source of iron and steel scrap at competitive prices; and (3) the, ratio of the cost of iron in iron ore to iron in scrap. In recent years the quantity of scrap used per ton of steel ingot produced has decreased. The major individual. consumers of iron and steel scrap were the steel mills in Arizona, Colorado, and Utah, foundries in Utah and Arizona, and copper leaching, operations in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. About 2 million tons of iron and steel scrap was used by the iron and steel industry in 1964. Although there has been a decline in the amount of scrap used per ton of steel ingot produced because of changes in steelmaking methods, there has been a slight increase in the overall quantity of scrap used because of the increase in ingot production. It is estimated that the scrap consumption in the steel industry will increase by 19 percent by 1980. In addition to the scrap consumed by the steel industry, 273,000 tons of ferrous scrap were used by copper-leaching operations. Thirty-one percent of the ferrous scrap used by the steel industry in 1964 was purchased from dealers and other sources. The CF&I Steel Corp. (formerly The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp.) at Pueblo, Colo., complemented its blast- and open-hearth-furnace operations with basic-oxygen converters in 1962. The basic-oxygen and open-hearth furnaces were charged with 30 and 90 percent scrap, respectively. Future use of the open-hearths would probably be used to supplement ingot production requirements. Because it was more economical to use less scrap and a high molten-metal charge, the United States Steel Corp. at Geneva, Utah, which uses the open-hearth process to make steel, charges the furnaces with 25 to 35 percent scrap. The Allison Steel Manufacturing Co. at Tempe, Ariz., uses a 100 percent scrap charge in its electric furnace. Although it was estimated that there were 327,000 tons of various grades of motor vehicle scrap generated in 1963, no estimates were made concerning the total quantity and grade of scrap available in the area. Most of the scrap used in the steelmaking industry originated within the area. It was advantageous to sell scrap generated in eastern Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota to markets in the Midwest because of freight costs.

Coal-mine officials and those who are preparing to become officials should be familiar with the instruments and devices that are employed rather commonly in and around mines and should know how to use them with safety and efficiency. Among these axe instruments and devices used in determining the pressure, velocity, volume, and certain other conditions of ventilation and in detecting the more common mine gases, such as methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulphide, or a deficiency of that very important agent, oxygen. Water gages, anemometers, barometers, psychrometers, flame safety lamps, lamp-testing boxes, and methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulphide detectors are described and their use and operation discussed in this paper.

A computerized napping system was developed by the Bureau of Mines to provides procedures for the rapid and inexpensive display of coal reserve data. Mapping system output consists of two types of maps, point distribution and contour (isopleth), which can be produced for data (coal analyses) associated with a point location (outcrop, drill core, or mine samples). These locations can be in the form of latitude and longitude or Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid coordinates. The mapping area can range in extent from as small as a single county to as large as a multistate region. The mapping system utilizes programs developed at Harvard University, in addition to several modifications developed by the authors. The primary advantage of this system is that it enables the display of a rapidly changing data base and computerized map generation without the intermediate steps of digitizing and overlaying to produce base maps. The mapping system is applicable to any regional mineral reserve or resource study for which point location data are available. Included are example maps of the distribution of data points and contouring for sulfur content of the Upper Freeport coalbed in this western Pennsylvania demonstration area.

"The transportation of explosives, and especially their distribution from the supply magazines of the manufacturers or dealers to the mines, quarries, or other points where they are to be used, by means of horse-drawn vehicles is an old-time practice, and the records of accidents of the past show this to have been a hazardous undertaking requiring for safety the taking of many precautions not required in the transportation of other merchandise.Displacement of the horse-drawn vehicle by the motor vehicle for the transportation of explosives is increasing rapidly. A consideration of the facts that the vehicle is operated by an explosion engine, using easily vaporized liquid fuel; that the charges in the engine are fired and the vehicle lighted by electricity; and that the vehicle, being operated insulated from the ground, may accumulate static charges led to the conclusion that new hazards are being introduced into the transportation of explosives through the use of motor-operate& vehicles, and that therefore additional special precautions must be taken against these additional hazards.That accidents have already occurred in this use of motor-vehicle transportation is evidenced from the following examples:Recently in California a driver loaded a box of granular powder in the rear of an automobile truck and a box of electric detonators in the front. Suddenly, while traveling along a highway, the explosives detonated, demolished the truck, and blew the body of the driver into small pieces. No evidence was left to show the cause of the explosion, but it is assumed that a jar or other means caused the detonators to fire, and that they in turn detonated the explosive. It should be recognized that it is unsafe to transport detonators and explosives in the same compartment, and this rule should be strictly enforced. At present this rule appears to be either unknown or, at least, frequently ignored.There are usually so many possible causes of ignition or detonation of a truck load of explosives that it is often impossible to state definitely the exact cause in a given case. This is well illustrated in the following account of an accident: A trucking company was hired to haul a truck load of explosives about 200 miles. The driver had had experience in driving trucks of explosives, and it was stated that he inspected the truck carefully before leaving the garage. Eighty 50-pound boxes of explosive were placed in tiers on each side of the truck and 265 25-pound kegs of black blasting powder were placed in the center of the truck. The boxes were placed flat and the kegs were placed on end, arranged in tiers. While the truck was being driven along the highway there was a muffled explosion. When some men, who were about a quarter of a mile away, arrived at the scene the truck was in flames and they could get no nearer than 100 feet. The driver was sitting in his seat and had apparently been killed instantly either by shock or fumes. When the flames were finally quenched, the driver's body was recovered, badly charred. It was, found that several boxes of explosives had been thrown about 40 feet by the initial explosion but were uninjured. A total of half a ton of dynamite was recovered. The cover to the gasoline tank could not be found."

Novel magnetic levitation (mag-lev) technology was developed. Frictionless and contact-free transport of a prototype materials container and payload has been demonstrated.

"Concentration, ore-dressing, or the dressing of minerals are common terms used in metallurgy and indicate processes of separating valuable minerals from worthless gangue. It is understood, of course, that the products from such processes, being separated from the various minerals and gangue, are ready for commercial sale or for further treatment by smelters and refineries.Gravity concentration takes advantage of the difference in specific gravity of the various constituent minerals and gangue of waste material in the ore. The two most common forms of concentration by this means are jigging and table concentration. Jigs usually are used in the separation of relatively coarse material and the tables for the finer material, the line of division in general being about 20 mesh.There are mar factors to be considered .before a decision can be made as to what method would be best adapted to the successful treatment of an ore and only by careful experiments can this be determined. Among the important factors to be considered are. The nature of the minerals present, their physical and chemical relations to the gangue material, and the gangue material itself. Perhaps the most important is the number of minerals present and their relation to each other.Metals exist in ores in three principal forms -- sulphides, oxides or carbonates, and native. Concentration by gravity methods is in general best suited to sulphide ores, although in some places considerable success has, been obtained in the concentration of oxide ores by gravity methods."

Studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the positive ions and neutral species produced in glow discharges of gas streams containing 1.0 percent NO in helium, 29 percent dry air in helium, and 1.06 percent NO in N2, Mass spectrographic measurements were conducted for gas pressures from 2.3 to 10.0 torr and dc currents from 10 to 20 mAo Ion species observed included NO+, N2 +, O2 +, N+, and 0+ with lesser amounts of He+, He2+, and N02+. Variations in various ionic and neutral species with discharge duration were interpreted to be consistent with an electrically induced dissociation of NO to produce N2 and O2. No nitrogen oxides were observed to form in glow discharges of the helium-air mixture.

Steel liner plates, which are bolted together to form a shell, are commonly used to provide temporary protective linings in the tunneling industry to ensure the stability of the tunnel and safety of the workers until more permanent ground reinforcement can be installed. As the ground deforms to try and close the opening, the liner plate is radially stressed, and by deforming redistributes these loads back to the surrounding insitu earth. Grouting behind the plates is done to fill any voids and ensure uniform contact to the strata around the back of the plates. Another function of the liner plate in some applications is to act as a platform or structure for the mining machine to react against in order to develop the necessary forward thrust to be able to excavate the face. In this case, the liner plates are loaded axially as a horizontal column of bolted liner plate rings, creating a jacking force against the liner plate assembly. In general, the buckling strength of the plate sections determines the jacking force capacity. Historically, the jacking force capacity of tunnel liner plates has been theoretically determined by some simplistic equations developed from tests of single liner plates. Recently, full-scale tests on a complete circular section of bolted liner plate ring segments have been conducted in the NIOSH Safety Structures Testing Laboratory using the unique Mine Roof Simulator to apply controlled loading in a manner that simulates the real world environment. Due to the unique size and capacity of the Mine Roof Simulator, these are believed to be the first full-scale tests conducted on the jacking force capability of tunnel liner plate rings. These tests indicate that the previously used theoretical equations tend to over predict the jacking force capacity of these tunnel liner plates. Unanticipated deformations in the field have been observed at loads below these theoretical design loads, therefore, a more accurate determination of the jacking force capability was needed. This report summarizes the full-scale test results, examines design parameters that impact the jacking force capability, and develops new mathematical models to improve the prediction of design loads.

The exposure of mine workers to diesel particulate matter (DPM) and gases is an issue of great concern to the underground mining community in the United States. Approximately 30,000 underground miners are potentially exposed to high concentrations of DPM. In January of 2001, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated rules setting compliance standards for both underground coal and metal / nonmetal mine workers. As industry works to achieve compliance with these standards, mine operators are looking for feasible methods for reducing DPM concentrations in their mines. In addition, the industry needs methods to accurately measure DPM to ensure that the control strategies they adopt are working successfully. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research to evaluate control technologies and monitoring instrumentation that can be used to reduce the diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposure of mine workers. An overview of the strategies being utilized in underground US mines to reduce DPM concentrations will be presented. Also, updates on the development of diesel monitoring instruments such as the continuous elemental carbon monitor or the Personal Dust Monitor for DPM measurement will be provided.

Laboratory characterization studies have investigated the processing variability of carbonaceous uranium-bearing materials found in-sandstone deposits. This work was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines in support of its goal to maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs. Conventional processing produces only partial uranium recovery from these ore materials. Ore samples from New Mexico, Texas, and Wyoming were examined, and each responded differently. Using direct acid leaching techniques, some of the ores required acid additions of only 50 pounds per ton, while others required 300 pounds per ton of material. Maximum extractions ranged from 83 to 94 percent in the six ores tested. Roasting those ores prior to leaching improved extraction of the uranium to the 90 to 99 percent range. An oxidative autoclave treatment used with five of these ores resulted in extraction of 78 to 97 percent of the uranium. The experimental studies also showed that some carbonaceous materials can be concentrated by froth flotation. The flotation tailings were amenable to acid leaching, and up to 98 percent of the uranium was extracted from this type of material.

Beginning in 1991, scientists at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory recorded interviews with individuals who are recognized as experts in mine emergency response. These 30 veterans related stories and observations from events experienced during as many as 47 years of response activities. Overall, the response veterans averaged 29 years of mine emergency response experience and 35 years of mining experience. Interviewees included representatives from mining companies, the United Mine Workers of America, and State and Federal agencies. Most of their comments dealt not so much with technical aspects of particular mine emergency responses, but rather the human side of more general topics, including preparedness, experience, people on-site, mine rescue teams, and decision-making. An analysis of their interviews provides an overview of lessons learned on-site at some of the largest mine disasters since the mid-1940s. This knowledge was gathered so that it could be provided to today's miners and to tomorrow's emergency response personnel. It is expected that the collective wisdom obtained can be used to help train new responders and guide those decisions that will have to be made on the scenes of future events.

In studying the destructive distillation or pyrolysis of oil shales, the primary consideration is to determine the effects of heat on the organic components of the shale. The impracticability of separating these organic components, collectively known as "kerogen", from the mineral matter with which they are associated renders the problem extremely complex. The behavior of the kerogan in the shale while undergoing the heating process is probably different from that of the same kerogen if it could be isolated and treated under similar temperature conditions, and in fact the results of actual distillations have shown that the physical properties of the mineral matter in the shale may be the cause of much variation in the products of retorting. It must be remembered that the inorganic .material of the shale is a heterogeneous mixture of minerals solidified into a very close-grained compact mass. This mineral mass has a thermal conductivity different from that of the kerogen, thus complicating the problem of even distribution of heat. Furthermore, the temperatures of dehydration of gypsum end some; hydrous silicates are included within the temperature range of the shale distillation, These minerals are frequently present in the shales; and the evolution of water vapors from them will affect the partial pressures of the hydrocarbon vapors evolved from the kerogen, probably tending toward, the improvement of the quality of the oil distillates. Carbonates and sulphides which are also frequently present begin to decompose within this range of temperature, and the gases produced from them may alter the chemical constitution of the oils produced from the kerogen.
