Reduce dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by keeping them upwind of the primary cutting drum. Approach Use a different coal cutting sequence by cutting from headgate-to-tailgate, making the cleanup pass from tail-gate-to-headgate. How It Works The cutting action of the shearer drum is usually the primary source of respirable dust at longwall shearer faces. Dust exposure of the shearer operator is deter-mined by his position relative to the lead drum, which is normally in the raised position taking a full sump. On long-wall faces where the cut pass is taken from tail-to-head, against the primary airflow, the shearer operators must remain at their controls, on the return-air-side of the primary dust source, to maintain proper control. A simple method to lower shearer operators' dust exposures is to extract the primary coal from head-to-tail, thus positioning the operators up-wind of the lead cutting drum. The bottom coal is then cut, and the floor cleaned by the trailing drum during the tail-to-head cleanup pass. This sequence places the primary dust source, the cutting action of the shearer drums, on the return-air side of both shearer operators, except when cutting out at the longwall headgate.

An experimental investigation was conducted to assay the relation between natural gas concentration and ignitibility of the gallery atmosphere . Both the gas concentration representing maximum ignitibility and the relationship between certain properties of the explosives and their incendivity are discussed . The data show that variation in the natural gas content in the gallery can have a highly significant effect on ignitibility of the gallery atmosphere ; maximum ignitibility of the atmosphere by permissible explosives occurs with approximately 8.1 percent natural gas . The study also shows that incendivity of a permissible explosive cannot be determined only by its detonation velocity , oxygen balance , or ballistic mortar strength . However , for similar type explosives , trends observed indicate that their incendivity increases with detonation velocity or bulk strength . Additionally , for underoxidized explosives studied here , the more negative the oxygen balance the less incendive was the explosive within a class defined by salt content .

"The Miami-West Palm Beach belt of silica sand, which may be suitable for the manufacture of high-grade glass, extends 65 miles northward from the neighborhood of Miami to the vicinity of West Palm Beach, The sand presumably originated in the host rocks constituting the oceanward slope of the Appalachian Mountains and the Piedmont Plateau of Georgia and the Carolinas. The sand now lies in a long, narrow, and probably thin belt that forms a dune-capped terrace marking a previous stage of submergence. The highest dune crests appear to be no more than 30 feet above sea level, and the water table is about 10 or 15 feet below the general level of the terrace.The width of the belt in several places is known to be more than a mile, and the thickness of the clean glass sand sampled ranged from 4 to more than 7 feet. Visual inspection and the meager data indicate the existence of bodies of glass sand large enough to supply foreseeable markets.Analyses of three samples indicate that beneficiation would make the sand suitable for the better grades of ordinary and flint glass.The prospective grade and quantity of sand, an available market in Florida for glassware, and the expectation of postwar expansion of the new industry of glass producing justify more detailed exploratory work and beneficiation testing.U. S. Route No. 1, Old Dixie Highway, the Seaboard Railway, and the Florida East Coast Railway, all substantially parallel and usually within a width of a mile or two, run along parts of the belt or between it and the coast. In addition to many streets and unpaved roads, a paved road crosses the belt at right angles about every 5 miles. Numerous towns are situated within or near the belt. Any area selected for a mining, processing, and manufacturing plant would be near a railroad, a highway, and water and also accessible to public utilities.The subtropical climate, famous for its pleasantly warm winters, would preclude seasonal interruption of plant operations."

Fluorine-containing polymers are comparatively new materials that exhibit very desirable characteristics not usually found in non-fluorine containing polymers. Among these characteristics are heat and flame resistance, desirable electrical properties, and chemical inertness. Polytetrafluoroethylene and polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene are examples of such polymers commercially available. In practical applications it is reasonable to expect thermal position of these materials if they are subject to high enough temperatures. The temperatures at which thermal decomposition takes place and the nature of the gaseous products of decomposition are considered pertinent data in intelligent use of these materials. The purpose of the tests discussed herein was to determine: (1) The temperatures at which gases were produced when small specimens of the two polymers were located and (2) determine the identity of the major constituents of gaseous products.

The Convertol process, recently developed in western Germany, is a new method of cleaning and dewatering coal-washery slurries. It is a modified bulk-oil process, in which a very small quantity of heavy oil is dispersed over the surfaces of the coal particles, followed by a screen centrifuge operation in which the water and dirt (clay, shale, and pyrite particles) are thrown out through the screen perforations and the clean coal particles are retained on the screen and discharged as a dewatered, clean coal product of 8- to l0-percent surface moisture. It is reported, also, that the process oil, all of which is retained in the clean-coal product, adds to the coking power of the coal and facilitates the production of briquets, reducing the proportions of binding material required.

(being shipped as bailast in ocean freighters). Within the last 10 years it has become more economical to use local sands, and there has been a general shift from the Belgian sand. Deposits of purer sand were treated and used for 'some time: but the suprly became limited, and means were sought to beneficiate the more bountiful subpay-f impure beach sands. These sands are composed of, 50 percent feldspar and 50 percent quartz, with small amounts of iron- bearing minerals, The most objectionable impurities in these West coast sands are the oxides of iron and aluminum. The Del Monte (Calif.) beach sand contains about 0.13 percent FeqQg and about 11.0 percent Aig03 (the latter being furnished by the large amount of feldspar present.) For the manufacture of feldspar present.) For the manufacture of flint-glass containers the maximuni quantities of these two impurities permitted in the sand are 0.05 percent F20 and 6 to 8 percent A1203.. The Fe0g occurs in the sand as follows: Traces of iron-bearing minerais resistant to weathering, ferruginous clay stains on the sand grains, and iron minerais not visible and possibly in solid solution or as colloidal incisions in the grains of feidspar or quartz. A good part of the iron in the sand is present in the traces of iron-bearing minerals, biotite, ilmenite, garnet, monazite; and hornblende. Biotite is present in larger quantities than the others. Samples of quartz, were freed of iron-bearing minerais by the use of heavy liquid (sp.gr. 2.70), leached with boiling HCI and SnCl2. Under a microscope a few apparently clean quartz grains were selected, and Fe203 was determined spectrographically to be 0.03 percent. "SUMMARYThe Ringelmann Smoke Chart fulfills an important need in smoke abatement work and certain problems in the combustion of fuels. A knowledge of its history and method of preparation is, therefore, of interest to many. Since instructions on its use are not shown on the recent edition of the chart, those included in this revision of the previous information circular, by Rudolf Kudlich, now are a necessary complement to the chart. More detail regarding the use of the chart is included than was given in the earlier manuscript.INTRODUCTIONThe Ringelmann Smoke Chart, giving shades of gray by which the density of columns of smoke rising from stacks may be compared, was developed by a Professor Ringelmann of Paris. Maximilian Ringelmann, born in 1861, was professor of agricultural engineering at l'Institute National Agronomique and Director de la Station d'Essais de Machines in Paris in 1888, and held those positions for many years thereafter.The chart apparently was introduced into the United States by William Kent in an article published in ""Engineering News"" of November 11, 1897, with a comment that he had learned of it in a private communication from a Bryan Donkin of London. It was said to have come into somewhat extensive use in Europe by that time. Kent proposed in 1899 that it be accepted as the standard measure of smoke density in the standard code for power-plant testing that was being formulated by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.The Ringelmann Chart was used by the engineers of the Technologic Branch of the Federal Geological Survey (which later formed the nucleus of the present Bureau of Mines) in their studies of smokeless combustion beginning at St. Louis in 1904, and by 1910 had been recognized officially in the smoke ordinance for Boston passed by the Massachusetts Legislature."

Cement copper was flash roasted in a vertical tube furnace to convert the copper to acid-soluble oxides as part of a postulated process for refining cement copper by oxidation roasting, acid leaching, and electrowinning. The results of the study showed that the oxidation was a linear function of oxygen concentration between 0 and 20 percent, but above 20 percent oxygen there was no further increase in oxidation. Therefore, air was the optimum oxidizing atmosphere in this flash roasting system. The oxidation followed a parabolic rate law as the roasting temperature was increased from 400° to 800° C. Extrapolation of the data, based on the parabolic law, indicated that at 400°, 500°,600°,700°, and 800° C, the roasting times required for complete conversion to soluble oxides were 75, 37, 21, 7.7, and 4.6 seconds, respectively. Cyclic-roasting test results did not substantiate the predictions obtained through data extrapolation.

Seven degasification wells have been completed in the Pittsburgh coalbed at the new Emerald mine near Waynesburg, Pa. Funding was provided by the Bureau of Mines to perform stimulation treatments on five of the wells, to show that this is a feasible and economical means of degasifying part of a coalbed. The seven wells ranged in depth from 590 to 910 feet. Stimulation treatments used 25,260 to 42,660 gallons of foam and 7,400 to 12,800 pounds of 20/40-mesh prop sand. Pumping rates were 10.8 to 11.6 bbl/min and treating pressures were from 1,050 to 1,600 psig. On the day following stimulation, gas production ranged from a few hundred cubic feet per day to more than 100,000 cu ft/day.

Design a high-production coal mining machine with inherent low dust generation and low frictional ignition potential. Approach Constant depth linear cutting (CDLC) provides a longterm solution to excessive dust generation from shearers and continuous mining machines through new design of the rotary drum culling system. Problems with rotary drum systems, which must be eliminated to control the dust generation at the source, include the effect of a con¬stantly varying depth of cut using fixed bit spacing, secondary fragmentation of already broken coal and, frictional heating of bits and entrainment of dust by fanning action due to high drum rotational speed, Each bit on a rotary drum enters the coal face at zero depth of cut, goes to some maximum depth at the horizontal centerline during sump, and exits at zero depth.

The mine ventilation system consists of the fan, the roadways, and the regulatory devices. Sufficient fresh air must reach each working face in the mines to render harmless noxious, toxic, and respirable pollutants and to provide for the breathing of men. This is achieved by the proper selection of fan and regulatory devices. Because a mining system is dynamic, the mine ventilation system must also be dynamic. In short, mine ventilation engineers are frequently called upon to provide answers to the following questions: 1. Given a mine or the projected plan of a mine, what fan must be selected for the quantities specified in the section? At what point in its characteristic must it be operated? Are any speed changes or changes in blade settings warranted? 2. What should be the regulation in a section to insure cer¬tain desired quantity in that section? How does it affect the overall ventilation system? 3. What are the effects of driving a new shaft? Where should it be located? What size fan should be installed in the shaft? How does this affect the overall ventilation sys¬tem? 4. How much quantity increases can be obtained by cleaning up falls and streamlining roadways and by driving addi¬tional parallel airways? These questions are in no way exhaustive, nor are answers easy. Most of the operational and planning problems discussed above are to a cer¬tain extent solved by ventilation engineers using rules of thumb from experience. Both natural conditions and regulatory requirements have changed so drastically recently that use of scientific methods in ventilation planning and of faster methods in evaluating the plans is a must. The Bureau of Mines explored the use of air or natural gas for recovering additional oil from natural water-drive reservoirs with little or no original gas saturation. Engineering and production data for a field in the Mid-Continent area, results of limited laboratory experiments, and data shown in the literature were considered. Injecting air into a water-coned well could seriously damage the well. Injecting natural gas into the watered-out zone could improve the producing water-oil ratio. In the reservoir studied, oil recovery can be increased by injecting natural gas to decrease water-oil ratios. Laboratory tests on a core from the field show an increase in oil recovery of 7.6 percent of the original oil in place as a result of increasing the free gas saturation. This recovery could amount to as much as an additional 6 million barrels of oil from this field.

One phase of the Bureau of Minest work in the field of health and safety is the promotion of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respir atory protective devices. To insure that such devices will be available, the Bureau has established schedules of what it considers the minimum re- quirements for oxygen breathing-apparatus,3 gas masks, hose masks,5/ and mechanical filter-respirators (a schedule of requirements for hose- type supplied-air respirators is being prepared). Approval of oxygen breathing-apparatus is given by the Safety Division; approval of other types of respiratory equipment is given by the Health Division, both divisions being in the Health and Safety Branch, Manufacturers of respiratory protective devices may submit their equipment to the Bureau for approval under the requirements of these schedules. The results of a Feasibility and Design Study of Surface Impregnation Equipment to be used for Chemical Stabilization of Coal Mine Structures are described in this report. The study was sponsored by the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, under Contract H0210055. This program was undertaken as an essential part of the Bureau of Mines Chemical Ground Stabilization Program. The responsible prime contractor was The Eimco Tunneling and Mining Machinery Division of the Envirotech Corporation. The Rocketdyne Division of the North American Rockwell Corporation performed part of the feasibility study and design and testing of the metering and feed system as a subcontractor to Eimco.

This analysis was conducted in response to concerns raised by the Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives regarding the potential impacts on automobile production, GNP and employment resulting from embargoing south African supplies of the platinum-group metals, platinum and rhodium. This analysis should be considered an addendum to the recently released study in which the direct economic costs I of a U.S. embargo on selected South African strategic and critical materials are estimated. The estimated GNP and employment impacts result when a mineral shortage reduces domestic industrial production and are in addition to the direct costs estimated in the earlier study. The direct cost to this nation resulting from a decision to embargo six south African strategic and critical minerals was estimated at $1.85 billion per year during the 1988-1992 time frame of the study. The estimated direct costs include the costs to U.S. consumers resulting from higher strategic mineral prices, lower mineral consumption, and the cost of developing higher cost domestic mineral resources. A large proportion of the costs result from the shortage of the two metals: platinum and rhodium. The average direct annual cost of embargoing is estimated at about $1.4 billion for platinum and $384 million for rhodium.2

This report documents a systematic approach towards implementing an improved ensemble for the mine rescue team system that will protect against the hazards of mine rescue and recovery and will also afford improved performance through increased comfort and maneuverability, lighter burdens, and improved human engineering designs. In the first part (Task 1) the mine rescue team's protective needs were defined along with the test methods required to evaluate whether a particular piece of gear met these needs. Task 2 assessed existing gear against performance criteria and standards developed in Task 1. Task 3 consisted of the conceptual design and construction phases of the MRPE program. Special consideration was given to advanced concepts, materials, and equipment.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a time-dependent mathematical model of radiative heating of bulkheads in mines. The model includes both reradiation from the duct (cylindrical) walls and direct radiation from the fire zone. Thermal loss into the wall of the duct and into the bulkhead is included. Both brick and wood bulkheads are considered. It is found that the heating rate of the system scales as the duct length-to-diameter ratio and the flame temperature. In particular, the time required for the irradiated surface of the bulkhead to reach a specified temperature decreases with increasing flame temperature for a fixed length-to-diameter ratio and increases with increasing length-to-diameter ratio for a specified flame temperature. It is also deter-mined that the time, T, for the bulkhead surface temperature to reach a specific value, Tb, for a fixed length-to-diameter ratio less than 4 and for a flame temperature of 1,200 K is approximately linearly dependent on Tb for 500 K < Tb < 700 K, and is nearly exponentially dependent on the length-to-diameter ratio for Tb = 600 and 700 K.

Approach Two types of noise control packages have been developed, that can be readily fabricated and installed into bulldozers by mine personnel. How It Works Both of the noise control packages reduce the noise exposure of the operator by two techniques, blocking the noise paths or absorbing the sound before it reaches the operator. Both airborne noise paths and noise paths through the machine are blocked. One noise control package is designed for bulldozers having ROPS (Roll Over Protection System), but no cab. The Bureau of Mines studied the penetration of a slender cylindrical tube into a sand bed, simulating seafloor material under the application of a static load. The factorial experimental design was based on three factors: tube diameter, geometry of penetrating bit, and seawater saturation of sand, all of which were found to be significant in influencing the depth of penetration. The geometry of the penetrating bit, or shoe, is of major significance in the mechanics of penetration and should be considered the most important factor for additional study. Linear regression analyses of the load-penetration data show that the relationship is linear.

The ever-increasing need to guard against stream pollution has intensified interest in the problems of handling and disposing of flotation tailing. Therefore, the Bureau of Mines investigated the possibility of using crushed washery refuse to adsorb the free water in thickened flotation tailings on a bench scale and then in a pilot plant because the conventional methods of disposing of coal flotation tailings--impounding them or filtering them so they are dry enough to be conveyed to the refuse dump--are sometimes either impractical because of space limitations or costly because of low filter capacity. Most of the refuse samples tested were of similar mineralogical composition and exhibited similar water retention capability. The amount of crushed refuse required to adsorb the water in a particular tailing was influenced greatly by the fineness of the solids in the tailing and hence the percentage of solids to which it could be thickened. The ratio of crushed refuse to tailing solids required to provide a mixture dry enough to be carried on an inclined conveyor belt varied from 2.4 to 6.4. Several chemical agents that were tested were very effective in turning the free water in tailings into a stable gel. Fly ash also was very effective in adsorbing water.
