This Bureau of Mines report has been prepared to provide a means whereby mineworkers without specific geologic training can recognize and record the existence of potentially hazardous geologic features encountered in coal mines. Each geologic feature described in this report has been implicated in roof failure. Through the recording of the observations of mineworkers, based on this report, a geologic map of mine workings and the associated ground control problems can be compiled. From such maps, the trends of changes and features can be determined and projected ahead of mining. The face crew can be alerted to a potential problem and what to look for as the face is advanced.

"Diesel exhaust soots were assayed in the Ames Salmonella typhimurium histidine reversion assay system using TA 98, the soots being applied as the following preparations: dispersion in dipaimitoyl glycerophosphoryl choline (DPL), dispersion in dipalmitoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DPP!), and dispersion in dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid (DPPA) in physiological saline, and in physiological saline without added surfactant. The extracts of soots by dichloromethane / dimethylsulfoxide (DCM/BHSO) were also assayed. Studies were performed both with and without :IQ microsomal activation of the soot preparations. The DPP! and DPPA surfactants were chosen as phospholiridz with two palmitic acid moieties esterified to a glycerol as is the case with DPL, but with hydrophilic groups having different electrophilic characters. The soots, without S9 activation, showed mutegenic activity when extracted in the conventional procedure with DCM/DMSO. The mutagenic activity of soots dispersed in DPL was quantitatively comparable to, and in some cases greater than, the activity expressed by an equal mass of soot extracted by DCM/DMSO. Soots in other surfactantpreparations, DPP! and DPPA, also expressed positive mutagenic activity. Praincubation with S9 microsomal enzyme fraction reduced the activity of solvent extracted soots, and greatly diminished the activity of DPL dispersed soots. Initial sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assays using the Chinese hamster V79 cell line indicated DPL dispersed soot also can cause SCR in mammalian cells. Results thus far suggest that surfactant suspended or ""solubilized"" respirable soot particles could provide a mechanism for transport and expression of mutagens in the lung."

"INTRODUCTION Adoption of rubber-tire shuttle cars underground in conjunction with mobile coal-loading machines has introduced new problems in the control of dust on mine roadways. Where this type of loading and transportation is used, development and extraction are generally rapid, with the result that much coal is spilled from the shuttle cars during normal operation, Coal in the roadways from this source and from sloughing of the ribs is ground to fine dust by the wheels of the 'shuttle cars and by the treads of the loading and mining machines. The coal dust usually is somewhat contaminated by pulverized rock, and the mixture could not be loaded with the run-of-mine coal without undue contamination of the product even if it were cleaned up promptly.The presence of large quantities of fine, loose dust, which is constantly stirred up and kept in suspension in air by the traffic, constitutes a grave explosion hazard, reduces visibility along the roadways, and is physiologically harmful to the workmen who breathe the air. From the operating standpoint the loose material is undesirable along the roadways because it provides poor traction for the trucks and thereby increases wear and power consumption. The dust-explosion hazard could be eliminated or reduced by frequent application of sufficient rock dust on the roadbed; but this would not remedy the other difficulties, and in fact it might intensify them. Where practicable, the most direct and effective safety measure is to clean up and remove promptly all dust that forms and settles on the roadways. Unfortunately, in many cases this procedure is not feasible. A third Suggested remedy is to prevent dispersal of the dust into the air and to promote its consolidation on the floor by wetting the dust particles.During the past few years several mines have used calcium chloride on shuttle-car roadways to allay the dust thereon. When exposed to the' humid atmosphere of the mine this salt absorbs Moisture from the air and deliquesces, and in this way wets the dust on the floor of the roadway. In a survey conducted in coal mines in southern West Virginia and in eastern Kentucky where calcium chloride has been in use, somewhat conflicting re- ports were received regarding the merits of the application, and several operators have abandoned the practice either because of actual or assumed disadvantages. The purpose of the study described in this report was to collect and correlate evidence and, on the basis of experimental data obtained in the field and in laboratory tests, to present a clearer picture of the factors involved in the allaying of dust by use of salts."

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted a demonstration project to reclaim 125 acres of abandoned strip-mined land in Lackawanna County, Pa., for public recreational, historical, and educational use as a park. The Bureau was involved in the development of the general site plan, and engineered and supervised the basic land rehabilitation. The park's Facilities include outdoor recreational activities, picnic grounds, children's play areas, primitive overnight camping, and winter sports. A major attraction is the Anthracite Museum constructed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission The project may serve as a prototype for reclaiming existing and future surface-mined lands.

9. Remote Sealing System Sensitivity 9. 1 Introduction In the previous sections a description of the overall system has been presented along with detailed descriptions of the equipment and techniques employed with the preliminary probing system, the seal em¬placement system and the seal checking system. In addition, the use of these subsystems in a specific mine application has been described in considerable detail. A broad range of parameters of interest was specified in the contract, as summarized in Section 1. 3. Most of these are a function of the general location; i. e. , the location of the mine, and the specific location; i. e. , the location of the boreholes. These parameters of interest include passage size, shape, depth, slope and water con¬ditions. The length, diameter and location of the boreholes within the mine passage and on the surface are critical parameters as well. A few additional parameters may affect one or more of the remote sealing subsystems. These include temperature, topography, rock and soil conditions, and underground water. While variation in these parameters will not render the system inoperative, consideration of them in the planning stages will simplify and expedite the field operation. In the following sections the effect of the various parameters on the remote sealing operation will be discussed. For clarity, the several tasks, borehole drilling and casing, preliminary probing, fly ash delivery, foam topping and seal checking, will each be considered separately.

During an underground mine fire, air can be rapidly depleted of oxygen and contaminated with smoke and toxic fire gases. Any delay in warning miners could have disastrous consequences. Unfortunately, present mine fire alarm systems, such as stench, audible or visual alarms, telephones, and messengers, are often slow, unreliable, and limited in mine area coverage. Recent research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines has demonstrated that ultra low frequency electromagnetic signaling can be used for an underground mine fire alarm. In field tests of prototype equipment at five mines, electromagnetic signals from 630 to 2,000 Hz were transmitted through mine rock for distances as great as 1,645 m to an intrinsically safe receiver. The prototype system uses off-the-shelf components and state-of-the-art technology to insure high reliability and low cost. When utilized, this. technology would enable simultaneous and instantaneous warning of all underground personnel, regardless of their location or work activity, thereby increasing the likelihood of their successfully escaping a mine disaster. This report presents the theoretical basis for through-the-rock ultra low frequency electromagnetic transmission, design of the prototype transmitter and receiver, and the results of in-mine tests of the prototype system.

The Bureau of Mines studied toxic products produced by burning eight fire-resistant mines conveyor belts, a brattice cloth, and an electrical cable insulation obtained from laboratory-scale burning experiments under various air-flow conditions. Generally, CO product concentrations for most materials were noticeably higher then the NO2 and HC1 levels that were measured; also, no phosgene was detected. However, several of the fire-resistant belt samples yielded HC1 concentrations that were above the reported lethal level for 1/2 to 1-hour exposures, although these data were limited to flow conditions where air dilution effects were small; the belt materials that showed this behavior included samples of polyvinyl chloride, styrene butadiene, styrene butadiene blends, and a British neoprene which yielded the greatest amount of toxic vapor. In addition, some results are presented on the phosphoric acid concentrations that may be produced from the decomposition of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate when dispersed on a burning coalbed.

The four major IR bands of a-quartz at 1080, 797, 693 and 488 cm-1 are studied at room temperature by FTIR-Photoacoustic Spectroscopy. Using Rosencwaig-Gersho theory, equations for the PAS signal q for the thermally thin and thermally thick cases are derived and it is shown how thin to thick transition occurs and leads to saturation as the sample mass is increased. For sample mass < 2 mg, q is proportional to sample mass thus defining the region for quantitative analysis. The dependence of q on the chopping frequency f is found to vary as q f-n with n ? 0.9 for quartz, in good agreement with the RG theory.

The measurement of various gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a particular location has become a problem of considerable importance. Levels that need to be monitored vary from the range of percent for constituents such as oxygen to parts per million levels for gases like nitrogen dioxide. In particular, mine air can become contaminated with noxious or toxic gases from several sources: fires within the mine, diesel-powered equipment, and explosive sources. The contaminants that result are carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxides of nitrogen (NO and NO2). Additionally, oxygen (O2) may be depleted. Thus, the workman can be exposed to potentially toxic or asphyxiating atmospheres. A device was needed that will continuously monitor the mine air in working areas and provide warning of hazardous atmospheres. The Mine Air Monitor was conceived as being a portable, rugged instrument capable of measuring the concentration of the various atmospheric constituents in the mine environment. The unit was to provide both warning signals and quantitative measurements when hazardous contaminants existed at too high a level, or when the oxygen was being depleted. The initial concept involved optical sensors for all of the contaminating gases to be measured, namely CO, CO2, CH4, and NO2, and an electrochemical cell to monitor O2. When the explosion proof requirements of Schedule 2-G made the concept appear to be unfeasible from the standpoint of weight and portability, the program was redirected and a three channel monitor employing electrochemical sensors was adopted. In this case the gases to be monitored were O2, CO and NO2. The remainder of the program was oriented towards obtaining good, commercially available lectrochemical sensors for the above gases, testing them, reducing deficiencies noted during these tests, and making the necessary modifications to integrate the three sensors into a Mine Air Monitor suitable for the mine environment.

This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legisla- tion and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the rights of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the laws of Switzerland has been prepared from the best information available in ashington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consuler officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. Sitzerland is a small country in which little mining is done, yet it has a voluminous body of mining legislation. There are two salt-mining districts in Switzerland; that at Bez, Canton of Vaud, belongs to the Canton but the deposit is worked by a private company; and those at Schweizerhalle, Rheinfelden and Ryburg are worked by a joint stock company formed by the Cantons interested. Iron ore is mined at Gonzen, Canton of St. Gallen, and large beds of gypsum are worked, mainly for domestic consumption. In general, however, although many kinds of minerals are said to have been found in Switzerland, mining operations are irreguler end relatively unimportant. Even during the world war only about 2,500 persons were employed in mining establishments and most of these were in under round stone quarries. On the other hand, the republic comprises 22 Cantons, of which 3 are divided, making 25 units, and in the absence of generel Federal legislation, each of these units virtually has its own distinct mining la Under these circumstances, it is obviously inadvisable to review the mining lars of Switzerland in the same detail as those of other countries which Lave been digested in this series. For the lars of individual Cantons, as well as for a more comprehensive summary of the Swiss legislation as a whole, the reader is referred to a recent German publication." This is one of a series of papers dealing with mining methods and costs prepared under the sponsorship of end in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The mining methods described in this paper are those used in one of the large mines producing fluorspar in the Kentucky-Illinois fluorspar field, located in southern Illinois and western Kentucky on the Ohio River. The occurrence of ore and the methods of wining are similar to those in other mines in the district; therefore information regarding methods and the results obtained should be of interest. Improvements in methods have been made as experience developed the need of them. The trine is situated at Rosiclare, Ill., on the Illinois Central Railroad, and shipments are also made b r barge on the Ohio River.

In recent years the rapid depletion of high-grade iron ores and the demand by blast furnace operators for increasingly low-silica ores have stimulated interest in flotation studies of low-grade iron ores, such as wash-ore tailings and oxidized taconites. Four processes have been reported for the flotation separation of these iron ores--anionic and cationic collection of the iron oxides, cationic collection of siliceous gangue, and anionic collection of activated siliceous gangue (5).5/ The effectiveness of any one method, however, depends largely on the mineralogical composition and on the physical structure of the sample; hence, a comprehensive study of the floatability of the individual minerals occurring in these materials is essential. A review of the literature shows that the floatability of hematite and magnetite has been frequently investigated, whereas very little corresponding information is available for goethite, or for its more earthy form, limonite, both of which are abundant in the Mesabi and Cuyuna ores (19). The purpose of this investigation was to formulate general information on the floatability of goethite. Vacuum flotation, contact angle measurement, and simplified flotation tests using a modified Hallimond tube were used. The experimental results were correlated with the electrokinetic properties of goethite as determined by streaming potential measurement. The results were used to interpret the batch flotation tests made on an artificial mixture of quartz and goethite.

"INTRODUCTIONOrganics extractable from respirable diesel exhaust soot particles by organic solvents have been known for some time to be direct acting frameshift mutagens in the Ames Salmonella typhimurium histidine reversion assay (Huisingh, et al). Upon deposition in a pulmonary alveolus or respiratory bronchiole, respirable diesel soot particles will contact first the hypophase which is coated by and laden with surfactants. To model interactions of soot and pulmonary surfactant, we dispersed soots in vitro in the primary phospholipid pulmonary surfactant dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine (lecithin) (DPL) in physiological saline. We have shown that diesel soots dispersed in lecithin surfactant can express mutagenic activity, in the Ames assay system using S. typhimurium TA98, comparable to that expressed by equal amounts of soot extracted by dichloromethane/ dimethylsulfoxide (DCM/DMSO)(Wallace, et al, 1987). Here we report additional data on the same system using additional exhaust soots and also using two other phospholipids, dipalmitoyl glycerophosphoryl ethanolamine (DPPE), and dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid (DPPA), with different ionic character hydrophilic moieties. A preliminary study of the surfactant dispersed soot in an eucaryotic cell test system also is reported.MATERIALS AND METHODSSoots D4 and D6 were collected at two different times as scrapings from the exhaust pipe of a diesel tractor-trailer immediately after the engine was stopped. Surfactant dispersions were made by ultrasonic probe sonicating 25 mg of commercially obtained DPL, DPPE, or DPPA into 1O ml of O.85% physiological sterile saline (PSS) for 10 min at 40 watts power. For surfactant dispersions, 2.5 mg soot was mixed into 2.5 ml of the appropriate phospholipid dispersion. Mixtures were sonicated by 40 watts sonicator probe for one min, then incubated in the sonicator water bath for 30 min at room temperature; the mixture was then incubated for one hour at 37C while being rotated continuously. Dilution series were made with saline. For solvent extraction, 2.5 mg soot was mixed into 2.5 ml of DCM and incubated in a sonicator water bath for 30 min at room temperature. The sample was then mixed with 2.7 ml DMSO, placed in a dry bath at 45C, and the DCM evaporated under a stream of nitrogen gas until 2.5 ml of liquid remained. Ames salmonella/microsome assay utilizing TA98 for frameshift mutation was used for mutagenicity testing, with and without S9 activation, as described by Ames et al (1975). Unfiltered sample extractions or dispersions were preincubated with tester cells for 90 min at 37C : 0.1 ml of sample was mixed with 0.5 ml of PSS, or of S9 mixture, and 0.1 ml of an overnight TA98 culture incubated samples were then added to 2 ml of top agar supplemented with biotin and a trace amount of histidine, and overlayed onto Vogel-Bonner minimal media plates. After 48 hours incubation at 37C, revertant colonies were counted. Solvent controls were DMSO, DPL, DPPE, DPPA, and saline. Positive controls were trinitrofluorenone (1 ug/plate), for samples not treated with S9, and 2-aminoanthracene for S9 treated samples (2.5 ug/plate). All samples were assayed in duplicate. Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assay was performed, following Lett, et al (1981), using V79 cells, of Chinese hamster pulmonary fibroblast origin. Stock diesel sample suspensions were made as 10 mg soot/ml DPL suspension, or 20 mg soot/ml in DMSO. Aliquots of these soot preparations were added to 15 ml of culture medium per sample flask to result in concentrations of 25, 50, and 75 ug soot/ml medium. After 12 hours incubation, 200 ul of 25 uM 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was added to each flask. After another 35 hours incubation, 200 ul of 10 ug/ml colcemid were added; and the cells were harvested three hours later. Cells were swollen by hypotonic saline, and fixed twice with methanol/acetic acid, and burst on microscope slides. Cells on the slide were stained with Hoechst 33258, exp"

The Bureau of Mines developed a method to melt and cast specimens of hafnium- carbon alloy and studied their properties . A rotating - ladle vacuum or inert atmosphere arc furnace was designed , special electrodes and molds were developed , and operating procedures were worked out for casting small shapes . The cast specimens were evaluated according to their carbon content for melting point , density , microhardness , electrical resistivity , and oxidation resistance . Lattice dimensions were determined , and metallographic specimens were prepared . Photomicrographs were taken of specimens containing 2.72 , 5.50 , 6.47 , 9.97 , 12.8 , and 15.7 weight - percent carbon , and their grain structures were compared .

Uninterrupted shaft operations are an important economic factor in mine operation, and good shaft support is an important aid in preventing accidents and interruptions. More permanent supports can cut the hazards, costs, and delay incident to replacement of conventional timbers, especially where subject to decay. Installation of prestressed, precast concrete shaft supports in 100 feet of shaft at the Banner mine, Lordsburg, N. Mex., nave a satisfactory permanent installation in a section of shaft that had given trouble with conventional timbering. Use of rock bolts supporting gunited wire netting around the rock walls of the shaft prevented sloughing. No attempt was made in this paper to arrive at comparative costs of installation of various types of support. However, it was indicated that use of a lighter weight aggregate would be desirable in further use if prestressed precast members as placed in the Banner mine.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Argonaut mine, Amador County, California, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mining practices described are those used in exploiting the low-grade gold ores in the heavy and swelling ground that occurs on the Mother Lode belt. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. A. Stent, vice-president, James L. Fontenrose, cost clerk, Joseph Mohorovich, mine foreman, of the Argonaut mine, and of E. D. This paper describing the minim, methods at the mine of the Consolidated Cortez Silver Mines, Cortez, Nevada, is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Cortez district is situated on the southwest slope of Mt. Tenabo of the Cortez Range, near the middle of the boundary line between Eureka and Lander Counties (fig. 1). The camp of Cortez is 36 miles south of Beowawe, the nearest station on the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads. Mt. Tenabo, which is the highest summit of the south end of the Cortez mange, has an elevation of 9,240 feet; Cortez is about 6,280 feet above sea level. The Consolidated Cortez Silver Mines is the only company operating in the district at the present time and employs about 60 men. The daily production of l25 tons of silver-lead ore is concentrated in the company&apos;s mill of 150 tons capacity. The concentrate is hauled to Beowawe by automobile trucks for shipment to a reduction plant in Salt Lake Valley, Utah.

"Introduction;As in the case of TNT previously presented*, this report presents the results of an investigation to discover the safest and best way of utilizing picric acid for industrial blasting purposes. It describes the physical and chemical properties of this explosive, gives precautions to be observed in handling, packing, preparation of cartridges, and holes, presents the results of field tests in blasting stumps and bowlders, and compares the results with those obtained from dynamite.The investigations reported herein were undertaken and this paper has been prepared, solely to aid in the salvage of the surplus picric acid accumulated for war uses and released by the declaration of the armistice. No funds were available nor have any been appropriated with which to defray the expense of converting this picric acid into any other form or to prepare any explosive mixture from it. The sole problem was to find appropriate uses for this military picric acid in existing needs and to show that it can be efficiently used in carrying out essential civil projects.It is not intended by this publication to promote the use of picric acid as an industrial explosive further than is necessary for the proper utilization of this surplus. On the contrary, the authors believe that picric acid by itself is unlikely to come into general use as an industrial explosive, chiefly because of its cost but also as shown by the clouds of smoke it emits on explosion and the nature of the reactions it undergoes because we do not obtain from it its highest efficiency. As demonstrated in its previous use in Joveite, better results and higher efficiencies may be obtained by mixing picric acid in proper proportions with sodium nitrate or ammonium nitrate, to more completely oxidize the picric acid, and another nitrosubstitution compound, such as nitronaphthalenes, with which do desensitize and waterproof the composition formed. By such admixture not only may the energy resident in the picric acid, be more fully utilized but the cost of the resulting blasting explosive should be much less than that of picric acid."

"As the US coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face-ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity.Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 68% of the nations underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing technological climate on future room-mid-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.IntroductionThe ultimate goal for any coal mining company is to effectively use its human and financial resources to maximize its profits through the extraction of its reserves. Although recent workforce reductions in the industry have resulted in a more efficient use of labor and increased productivity, there comes a point in time when further reductions in the numbers of workers in each operating section are impossible with existing equipment. For example, Farinelli and Bise (1987) found that labor cost constituted 62% - 73% of the cost per ton of coal at the mining section, with a minimum crew size. Thereafter, efforts to increase productivity must focus on more efficient mine plans and technology.The fact that an increase in productivity can be realized by reducing non-productive time (change-out and tram time) and converting it to productive time has been known and demonstrated for quite some time. What has not been demonstrated frequently is the quantification of the potential productivity increase of currently emerging technology or ""add-on"" equipment. It is one thing to be able to say that a piece of equipment will make an operation more productive, but it is another thing to be able to quantify the productivity increase that will justify the purchase of the new equipment. Not only is a financial benefit possible in room-and-pillar mining with an increase in productivity, but a decrease in the time necessary to develop a longwall panel can also occur.The purpose of this paper is an analyze the impacts of a changing technological climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to several scenarios incorporating emerging technology. To do this, four cases will be developed.
