The following paper is one of a series on mining methods and practices being published by the United States Bureau of Mines, and deals with the sinking of the Pim shaft (No. 7) of the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Works of the National Lead Co. in the southeast Missouri lead belt. The shaft was sunk in 1922 and 1923 on a tract several miles south of the company's main plant located at St. Francois, Mo., in St. Francois County. The author is indebted to W. H. Comins, local manager of the company, with whose permission this article has been written, for his helpful criticism; and to E. T. Campbell, geologist, and M. 5. Development of Initial Probing System 5. 1 Introduction The preliminary evaluation of a variety of potential methods for initial probing showed that the optical system using closed circuit television (CCTV) and the sonar, or acoustic ranging, system were the most promising. The former is capable of pro¬viding a visual display of the mine passages in a clear, non-smoky environment, and the latter is capable of providing a map of the spatial location of the coal surfaces making up the entries, as well as objects, such as cribs, mining machines, etc., in the passages in both smoky and non-smoky environments. The sonar system used in conjunction with the CCTV in a clear environment can greatly assist in resolving the spatial distribution of objects seen on the TV screen. Further, in a smoky environment the interpretation of the sonar information could be facilitated if some visual information were also available. CCTV systems exist but require some modifications to suit this particular application. The Industrial Hazards and Communications Division of the Bureau has an ongoing program for the development of such a CCTV system. Rather than duplicate this effort in developing a CCTV system, it was decided to evaluate the possibility of utilizing their system for initial probing, while continuing with the develop¬ment of a system which would work in any environment, including the presence of dense smoke. The concept of using sonar for the initial probing of mine passages represents the application of new technology requiring development. The results of such a development effort undertaken during the course of this program are described in the following sections.

"In the United States there are hundreds of underground and surface (inside and outside) inclines at coal mines on which trips of cars are continually being run with coal, rock, supplies, and men. The safety of the men and prevention of damage to the slopes depend, excluding the personal element of the hoist-man, on the strength and condition of the wire cable, draw bars, and the couplings, and on the links of chains and pins as well. Within a recent period of four weeks there have been two runaway trips, one on the surface and one underground; it seems desirable to call attention of mechanical engineers and others at coal mines to the need for closer and more frequent inspection of the cable, draw bars, coupling links and pins, derailing devices, wheels, brakes, and other parts of cars or trips on which men are hauled on inclines. This bureau has never published anything on this class of accident heretofore.How frequently runaway trips occur is not known. If no serious injury or fatalit has to be reported to the State authorities, a number of such happenings may occur and not be mentioned outside of the immediate vicinity of the mine.Runaway trips can and do result in considerable loss of life, in injuries, and damage, either at or near the place of the break, or throughout a mine by causing an explosion of gas or coal-dust or both, This report is restricted to a study of the mechanical and physical phases of car trip construction and of the metal of couplings and ropes; derailed trips are not included and may be the subject of another paper. There is no need to mention gas accumulations, coal-dust and rock-dusting, open lights, protected power lines, and permissible equipment, because these have all been well covered in Bureau of Mines publications which have been widely distributed and partly or wholly reprinted by others.Most of the items regarding the runaway trips tabulated have been abstracted from reports made respectively by Clarence Hall, W.O. Air quantity-pressure and methane concentration surveys were conducted by the Bureau of Mines in accessible portions of an area being pillared in a Pittsburgh coalbed mine in West Virginia. These included two mined-out and three active butt headings and a bleeder system. The particular mine workings were started in virgin coal directly from a set of main headings; the main reason for the study was the difficulty usually encountered in adequately bleeding the gobs under such conditions. Although the two separate return airways in each active butt heading and the North and 1 Left bleeders contained acceptable methane concentrations (0.01 to 0.78 percent in the butts and 0.73 to 1.0 percent in the bleeders) with significant total methane removal (109 cfm in butts and 631 cfm in bleeders), there were relatively large areas in the gobs with possible minimal airflows. This condition appears to have developed from lack of systematic regulation of the airflow across the gobs and appears to indicate the existence of considerably more methane in the probably low flow areas in the gob.

The production of crude mineral commodities in Bangladesh was limited to natural gas, a small amount of construction materials, and clay for ceramics and bricks. No metallic minerals were mined. The only mineral commodity of economic significance was natural gas. Natural gas production has 'been climbing steadily and becoming an increasingly important source of energy for the country. Proved gas reserves were over 4.5 trillion cubic feet, but the amount has been increasing as exploration discovers large new deposits. Some sources quote reserves at over 10 trillion cubic feet.

Underground accumulations of slimes in the Henderson mine are routed to two large collection pits where they are dewatered and consolidated by application of direct current. Densified material is then removed to ore cars by rubber-tired front-end loaders and transported out of the mine. This Bureau of Mines report describes the electrical dewatering installation and compares its efficiency of operation with that predicted from preliminary laboratory studies performed by the Bureau. Direct current from a 150-kw rectifier (applied for 44 hours at 400 amperes and 65 to 70 volts) converted slimes containing 25.3 percent solids to material ranging from 44 to 65 percent solids. Better results can be expected if the ramp and front sections of the pits are treated separately, using higher current density.

Some of the gases produced by permissible explosives on detonation are poisonous, and the probable hazard involved by the inhalation of carbon monoxide in the past has been evaluated from results of tests in the Bichel Gage. Tests have now been made in the Experimental Coal Mine of the Bureau of Mines at Bruceton, Pa., to determine the composition of the gases obtained under actual mining conditions for the purpose of comparing these, results with those found by the Bichel gage tests. Two permissible explosives were procured for these tests, one that produces a relatively low quantity of poisonous gases in the Bichel gage (24.8 liters per 1-1/2 pounds of explosive) and another that produces a relatively high quantity of poisonous gases (94.6 liters per 1-1/2 pounds). The first of these is designated by the Bureau of Mines as a class A4/ explosive and the other is designated a class B explosive. In comparison with Bichel-gage tests, the shooting of permissible explosives in a coal shot hole resulted in a large reduction in the quantity of carbon monoxide, the principal poisonous gas, which; in the mine tests, was only 22 percent of that found in Bichel-gage tests: The quantity of carbon monoxide from the class B explosive in Bichel-gage tests was 3.8 times larger than that from the class A explosive; in the coalmine tests the ratio was 4:1. The concentrations of carbon monoxide in the mine tests, as determined by analysis of the atmosphere in an enclosed space resulting from shooting 1-1/2-pound and 3-pound charges of the class A explosive, were 0.03 and 0.06 percent, respectively, and the concentrations from 1-1/2-pound and 3-pound charges of the class B explosive were 0.10 and 0.24 percent.

"Investigations of the infrared spectra of crystalline and amorphous silica particles of different sizes (0.05, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 260 um) in the range of 400-4000 cm-1 using Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy we reported. The change in the intensity I of the signal with porosity e of powders follows the e/(1 - e) dependence for strong bands and e dependence for weaker bands as pre¬dicted by the theory of McGovern of al. For strong bands, I also follows the empirical relation I ~ D-n, where D Is the particle diameter in cm and n = 0.34-0.42. The anomalous positive frequency dependence of I on the modulation fre¬quency f observed for the stronger bands in the 45-pm and 260-pm particles Is believed to result from saturation. Some observations on the effect of changing the background from (carbon black) powder to pellet are also made.INTRODUCTIONSince the publication of the Rosencwaig—Gersho (RG) theory on the photoacoustic effect in solids (1, 2), Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR/PAS) has become an important technique for obtaining the IR spectra of surfaces and materials in their natural state (1-12). In the one-dimensional RG theory, the incident radiation, modulated at frequency f, is absorbed by the material to a depth pp = 1/B (B = absorption coefficient), thus setting up temperature variations in the material. These variations heat the adjacent gas/solid interface leading to the pressure fluctuations of the gas above the sample, which in turn is detected by microphone as a PA signal. The thermal wave originating from no deeper than the thermal diffusion length(2k/npcf) 1/2 in the material contributes to the PA signal (here k, p, and c are respectively the thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat of the material). Since u2, can be varied by varying the experimental parameter f, depth pro¬filing by PAS is possible and a number of papers on this subject have appeared in recent years (2-10). Another im¬portant phenomenon is saturation which occurs when the material thickness 1> u> us (1-12).The original promise of PAS for use with powder samples, without the need to ""prepare"" samples as in FTIR spectros-copy, has not yet been fully realized because of several com¬plications. Theoretical works by Monchalin et al. (13) and McGovern et al (14) showed that the interstial gas in the voids of the powders can act as amplifier and that, for the same mass, a finer powder is expected to yield higher PA signal than a coarser powder. Although in a number of earlier studies (15-21) an increase of PA signal with decreasing particle size has been observed, a quantitative check on the equations developed by McGovern et al. (14) has not yet been made. It is necessary to understand the particle size effects in PAS if the promise of PAS for IR spectroscopy of powders is to be realized. In this paper, we report results of a detailed study on the PAS of silica powders for the particle size range of 0.05-260 um and compare the results with theory (14). We have also investigated the frequency dependence of the variousIR modes in these powders and show that the saturation phenomenon affects at least some of the observations. Some observations on the effects of pellet vs powder background are also reported (22-24). Details of these findings are presented and discussed in this paper."

The need for a simple, very sensitive, and accurate method for the determination of benzene in blood and urine vas evident throughout a recent study of chronic benzene (C6H6) poisoning conducted cooperatively by the United States Bureau of Mines, The Barrett Company, and the producers of benzene. A combustion method which will be described in a later publication, and a previously described/ adaptation of Smyth's method were developed and used during that investigation. The adaptation of Smyth's method gave satisfactory results when dealing with exposure conditions that produced chronic poisoning in a comparatively few days, but it was time-consuming; and lacked the accuracy necessary for a study of the absorption, distribution, and fate of benzene in the body during exposure to threshold concentrations of benzene vapor in air. The combustion procedure was satisfactory from the standpoint of sensitivity but was cumbersome, intricate, time-consuming, and required the use of special and somewhat expensive Physical and chemical apparatus. Following the termination of this study of chronic poisoning, possibilities ides for developing better methods occurred, and these have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines with the aid of Relief Works Division personnel microcolorimetric method for the determination of benzene in air has been described recently.6/ The present report deals rich the adaptation of this new colorimetric method to the determination

During the 1982 Bureau of Mines study, 55 lode and 17 placer claims were held in the RARE II area. An estimated 150 lode claims and 50 placer claim, have been located in the study area; five were patented. There are no mineral leases. Gold has been produced from 8 lode mines and stream gravels have been worked for placer gold at 4 sites. Two suction dredges were active in stream gravels, but no significant gravel bars are identified. Identified mineral resources in the Weaver Bally area are gold and byproduct silver. The identified resources are at the Globe Mine, where approximately 33,000 tons of indicated marginal reserves (2,000 tons in the RARE II area, and 31,000 tons in the adjacent proposed Trinity Alps Wilderness) contain 0.45 oz gold per ton and probably 0.1 oz silver per ton. There are an additional 150,000 tons of inferred marginal reserves (35,000 tons in the RARE II area, and 115,000 tons in the adjacent proposed wilderness) averaging 0.38 oz gold per ton and probably 0.1 oz silver per ton. There is high potential for additional resources at the Globe Mine.

"INTRODUCTION The Yancey-Crawford tract, located 1-1/2 nines east of Yancey station on the Norfolk & Western Railway in Rockingham County, Va. was from 1917 to 1941 considered an unusually promising manganese prospect. Because of the favorable geologic formations and because of the common occurrence of manganese in the district and Virginia's large production of these minerals from this area, geological report 3/ have listed this tract as the No. 1 prospect in the State. During World War I, extensive geologic studies were made to locate manganese deposits similar to those exploited at the Crimera mine near Waynesboro to alleviate this mineral shortage during the existing emergency.In September 1941 the Bureau of Mines started exploratory drilling on the tract in an effort to discover and block out reserves of manganese minerals as authorized by the 76th Congress under the Strategic Materials Act. After five drill holes wore sunk, the project was terminated October 1941."

"INTRODUCTION In December 1942, the-Bureau of Mines reported favorably on a proposal to grant Government assistance-in constructing an access road (consisting principally of a timber-pile bridge across the Rio Grande at Hot Springs, N. Mex.) to the property under lease to the United States Fluorspar Co. At that time the property was being developed actively, and there appeared to be no immediate-need for exploratory or metallurgical assistance by the Bureau of Mines.Because milling facilities were inadequate; the access-read project was eventually disapproved, but prior to disapproval the company had discontinued operations. In June 1943, exploration was resumed by the Humphreys Gold Corporation of Denver, which had subleased the property. Difficulty of access continued to interfere with exploratory progress. In July 1945, at the request of the lessee, the Bureau of Mines directed sampling, using company employees.At the completion of this sampling program, the Bureau of Mines concluded that the property was potentially a important source of fluorite but that further development for production appeared to depend largely on the establishment, by exploration, of adequate reserves. Because of the relatively easy position-of metallurgical-grade concentrate and ores, it also was deemed advisable to investigate the possibility of producing acid-grade concentrate from the ore, for which a demand was becoming evident. Accordingly, a program of trenching, diamond drilling, and metallurgical testing was undertaken by the Bureau. The results of its investigation are reported herein."

A variety of student-machine interactive programs arc provided. These programs allow the author/instructor to evaluate numerical entries and responses to simple and compound multiple-choice questions (where a compound choice is defined to be more than one choice, ordered or unordered from one or more list(s) of choices. Descriptions of LTS applications, lesson development procedures, hardware provided and support facilities required are given. A contract history summary, and a bibliography of reports published under three successive BoM contracts supporting LTS development, is provided.

THIS REPORT presents the technique and equipment used in determining the hardness of titanium sponge. Detailed descriptions are given of the methods used in preparing test samples for chemical analysis and hardness testing, the method of melting and surfacing test ingots, and the technique of reading Brinell-hardness impressions. The arc-melting furnace described, for which engineering drawings are included, will produce from 70 to 90 double-melted buttons each 8 hours of operation. Experimental data are also presented depicting the effect on hardness of the methods of surfacing specimens, temperature of test specimens, and the effect of time at test load. These data show that surfacing of the specimen involves no critical machining operations but that the test surface must be paralleled by a relatively flat surface for contact with the anvil of the Brinell tester. The heating of a specimen to 150° C. during surfacing does not materially affect the results if the ingot is cooled to room temperature before the hardness impressions are made. The optimum time at load appears to be approximately 30 seconds, but load times of as much as 1/ ½ minutes will not cause major errors.

The Twin Buttes camp embraces eight mines in the Pima mining district. The first mining claims in the camp are said to have been located in 1876, but little mining was done until 1905. Intermittent operation of five of the mi.nes to 1928 yielded 388,231 tons of ore averaging 6.19 percent copper and 8 small tonnage of high-grade oxidized zinc ore. While the Bureau was investigating the area, one mine was active, and it started to produce in 1944. The mines of the Twin Buttes camp are at or near contacts of intrusive granite with Paleozoic limestones and quartzite. The ore shoots lie in metamorphosed sediments adjacent to a zone of garnet rock that separates the ore from the footwall granite. Small fissures that originate at the contact and cut the sedimentaries appear to have been controlling factors in ore deposition. No important ore bodies are exposed at the surface, and those developed wore discovered by sinking on the fissure veins to the contact zone. Most of the area overlying the favorable ore zone is covered by alluvium ranging in thickness from 5 to more than 20 feet.

The high thermal-neutron cross section of gadolinium and the good mechanical and corrosion properties of titanium suggest that alloys of these two metals might be useful as control rod material. To aid in establishing the feasibility of this combination, the Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the titanium-gadolinium system. The results indicate that the system is composed of a single eutectic reaction and a peritectoid reaction involving the alpha-beta transformation of titanium. The eutectic isotherm extends from 1 to 99 pct, gadolinium at 1,240° C. The established eutectic composition is about 95 pct, gadolinium. The peritectoid reaction occurs at 885° C. and extends almost over the entire composition range. Hardness increases slightly with additions of gadolinium, and little change is obtained by heat treatment. Alloys containing less than 10 pct. gadolinium are amenable to extensive cold-working, but alloys having higher percentage of gadolinium content are only moderately cold-workable. All alloys can be hot-worked in iron sheathing at 750° C. Observation indicates that all compositions possess good machinability. Corrosion resistance to water at room temperature is apparently poor, especially in the gadolinium-rich alloys. INTRODUCTION A combination of the good mechanical and corrosion properties of titanium and the variety of thermal-neutron cross sections characteristic of the rare-earth metals suggests that alloys of these metals may be used for control rod materials. For this reason the Bureau of Mines proposed a study of the titanium-gadolinium alloy system, and the Atomic Energy Commission sponsored the investigation.

This paper is one of a series describing methods and costs of recovering sand and gravel from deposits in the United States and deals directly with the operations of the Atlas Sand, Gravel and Stone Co. at Farmington, Conn. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarasement to individual producers, as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations may ensue.

Electron diffraction and electron microscopy were used to determine the unit cell parameters of garnierite [(Ni,Mg)3 Si2O5 (OH)4] and to examine its crystal habit. Bundles of ribbons, many less than 200 A. in cross section, make up the bulk specimen of the garnierite Electron diffraction revealed the unit cell to be monoclinic. Unit cell parameters were: a, 5.33 A,; b, 9.23 A.; c, 14.96 A.; and ß, 94°441.

This report describes an investigation of the relationship between crater dimensions formed in laboratory blasting experiments and the mechanical properties of the material cratered. Scaled field data have been included when available. The results show that tensile strength and possibly other mechanical properties may be useful in predicting maximum crater dimensions.

"The phenomenon of re-entrainment is seen in environments such as sand dune formation, soil erosion, fugitive dust emission and the spread of radionuclides from accidents involving nuclear weapons. A thorough review of existing literature reveals that work on re-entrainment of dust in mine atmospheres is scant. The present study was undertaken as a part of ongoing research at the Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust at the Pennsylvania State University on the development of methods to predict ambient dust concentrations in mine atmospheres (Ramani, 1983). The contribution of re-entrainment to the spatial and temporal concentration of dust in mine airways is being studied. The research has included wind tunnel and in-mine studies.A set of seven experiments was performed under controlled conditions in the US Bureau of Mines' Lake Lynn Laboratory mine. Two types of source coal dust, anthracite and bituminous, were subjected to various airflow rates and were subjected to walking by two different individuals. Six sets of instruments were used along the test section for sampling airborne particles. The average air velocity just above the coal dust bed varied between 2.1 to 3.2 m/sec.Due to re-entrainment as a result of the airflow conditions, the average respirable dust concentration in the center of the mine airway increased to 0.09 mg!m3 (standard deviation= 0.03 mg/m3)from an initial value of 0.02 mg/m3. The concentration of all (total) airborne dust increased to 0.17 mg/m3 (standard deviation = 0.10 mg/m3) from an initial value of 0. 02 mg/m3. The action of people walking, however, caused higher amounts of re-entrainment. The average concentration of respirable and total dust at the center of the mine airway increased to values of 0. 28 mg/m3 (standard deviation of 0.12 mg/m3) and 1.53 mg/m3 (standard deviation of 1.0 mg/m3), from initial values of 0.03 and 0.05 mg/m3, respectively. Jr was observed that the dust concentrations were much higher near the floor, immediately at the end of the coal-dust bed.Depending on the level of activity and the amount of dust deposited in the mine airways, re-entrainment may become an important source of airborne dust in areas away from the point of actual mining."
