In leaching copper ores knowledge of the rate of dissolution of the copper minerals and of the impurities is desirable. With knowledge of these two factors and data as to what minerals are present in the ore the metallurgist has an excellent start on planning a leaching cycle to fit that ore. The rate of dissolution is rather difficult to predict, and the time required to leach a given ore may differ markedly from that required by another ore. The whole study as related to mixed oxidized and sulphide ores is one of relative rates of dissolution of the different copper minerals and the impurities in sulphuric aoid and in ferric sulphate. The aim of leaching is to choose a cycle and strength of solvents to extract a maximum amount of copper and a minimum of impurities. The consumption of reagents per unit of copper dissolved is a function of the strength of the reagents used and the relative rates of attack on copper minerals and impurities. An opportunity may exist of obtaining the kind of electrolyte wanted for electrolytic precipitation and yet of saving on the consumption of reagents by modifying the strength of ferric sulphate and of sulphuric acid during the cycle to fit the time needed for dissolving the sulphide and oxidized minerals present.

[The Harrington-Hickory mine in the Star raining district, Beaver County, Utah, has produced approximately 20,000 tons of lead-zinc-silver ores since 1910. Production previous to 1910 is not known. The mine is owned by the New Majestic Mining Co. The property was rehabilitated and operated by James D. Williams under a 10-year lease with option to purchase from April 1943 to May 1949, Loans from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation in the aggregate of $41,000 wore used in construction of an access road, rehabilitation of the mine, and purchase of equipment for full-scale operation. The improved, all-weather access road extends from loading ramps on the Union Pacific Railroad at Milord to the urine storage bins 5 miles west o f town. The mine is serviced electrically by a. 5,000-volt line owned by Telluride Power Co. Mine transformers step the voltage down to 440/220/110 for surface and underground service.]

The present paper considers the rate of dissolution of copper from ores of the Southwest in sulphuric acid of varying strength and the ratio of sulphuric acid consumed to copper dis¬solved. In this study two ores containing the copper principally in an oxidized condition were used. The exploration work on a seleniferous tuff deposit near Lysite, Wyo., was confined chiefly to an area of approximately 1 square mile selected on the basis of prior examination and sampling work by the Bureau of Mines. This area was superficially explored by digging and sampling over 2,000 feet of trenches and 15 test pits. The surface sampling indicated that the deposit might contain a multimillion-ton reserve of easy-to-mine volcanic tuff assaying more than 0.01 percent Se. Later, 11 holes, ranging in depth from 57 to 135 feet and totaling 929.4 feet, were drilled under contract using a dry rotary drill. Samples for assay were cut at 5-foot intervals or at noticeable physical changes in the formation being drilled. Of the 206 samples assayed from the drilling, only 8 contained more than 0.005 percent selenium, and 2 of these assayed as high as 0.012 percent Se. Chemical analyses of samples obtained from six holes drilled by the Nugget Coal & Timber Co. to the south of the area explored by the Bureau of Mines showed that no selenium-bearing formations were encountered in that work. Two of 72 samples taken from 42 validation pits dug by claim holders contained more than 0.005 percent selenium. The exploratory work established that the selenium mineralization is erratically distributed in small irregular bodies and is not confined to any one tuff bed. Because of the lack of correlation between the infrequent showing of low-grade tuff, neither the extent nor grade of the reserves could be calculated.

"Following passage of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Public Law 911173), the Bureau of Mines initiated a research program aimed at controlling respirable dust exposures of coal mine workers. Respirable dust is the dust that gets into, and interacts with, the lungs of those who inhale it. It has long been recognized as a severe health hazard to mine workers. This program has been implemented by a team effort consisting of the Bureau's in-house capabilities, the Generic Center for Respirable Dust, and contractors, as necessary. Over the years, Bureau research has addressed principally three areas:o Compliance with the Federal 2.0 mg/m3 dust standard (1970-76).o Dust control for longwall mining (1976-1983).o More stringent respirable dust standards due to quartz dust (1983-1987).In addition, fundamental studies have been conducted by the Generic Center for Respirable Dust, with emphasis on penetration of dust into the lung. Accomplishments have been significant, but problems remain, as noted later.The Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, established a 2.0 mg/m3 dust standard for all coal mining operations, underground as well as surface. At the time of enactment of this legislation, the industry was averaging approximately 4.0 mg/m3. The Bureau of Mines respirable dust research program played a significant role in identifying and developing effective technology to allow better compliance with this new standard, thanks to industry implementation and Federal enforcement."

Low- and high-temperature reduction techniques were employed by the Bureau of Mines in study of conditions favorable to the formation of massive titanium crystals. '1,1,2 low-temperature method, feeding molten sodium to solidified titanium lower chloride-sodium chloride, produced higher quality and high quantity crystalline metal. The percentage of crystalline titanium was increased with increasing reactor diameter, melt depth, and titanium dichloride concentration. The high-temperature technique, feed molten sodium to melts above 8000 C, producing needle-type crystals of lower quality and with less consistent results than the low-temperature method. Layers of titanium foil, sponge, fine needles, wool, and crusts of sin-tered granules were formed during the earl, -art of the low-temperature reduction, and massive crystals were produced beneath this barrier in the latter part of the reduction. Crystalline titanium having an average hardness of Bhn 76 and representing 58 percent of the total titanium was obtained. Lamellar crystals up to 1 1/2 inches long with a hardness as low as Bhn 54 were also produced. A second-stage reduction for reclaiming titanium from offgrade sponge is described. Titanium produced by this method was comparable in quality to that from sodium reduction of titanium tetrachloride.

Objective Develop a method to warn of hazardous conditions and enhance safety during operation and inspection of vertical mine shafts and hoists. Background Mine hoisting is the most critical and potentially the most dan¬gerous operation in underground mining. Many hazards are related to falls of miners and materials, ground instability, and malfunction or lack of safety devices. All have the potential to cause a cata¬strophic accident. A condition known as "slack rope" is particularly dangerous, expecially if it occurs without the operator's awareness. The most common occurrence of slack rope is in metal or nonmetal mines that have a history of ground control problems near the "haft. Approach Studies of hoist safety features and Mine Safely a and Heath Administration (MSHA) accident statistics suggests a need to measure wire rope tension, conveyance speed and position, and shaft guide misalignment. The most accurate data are obtained directly from the conveyance. Such data could warn of potentially dangerous situations during hoisting operations, as well as during inspections, maintenance, and lowering of large equipment. Figure I shows the concept for monitoring wire rope tension, conveyance position, and guide displacement. Progress to Date A conveyance-mounted system has been developed that monitors rope tension: hoist conveyance position, speed, and load; and shaft guide misalignment. A "flex-beam" load sensor mounted just above the- conveyance protects against slack and tight rope. The measurements are transmitted 60 times a second via wireless equipment from the conveyance to the hoist room. An encoder mounted on the conveyance eliminates the need to correct the position because of rope stretch. Figure 2 shows the encoder wheel and guide displacement sensors being mounted on a cage in¬spection deck. A potentiometer monitors misalignment of the shaft guides during inspections. Information about the cage or skip can be acquired by the shaft inspector using a hand-held indicator. Inspection can also he conducted remotely from a station or hoist room using the wireless link to a laptop computer. Figure 3 shows test results from a simulated slack rope condition. The Bureau of Mines is investigating the acid resistance of ceramic materials to identify construction materials for emerging technology in chemical and metallurgical processes. Eight commercial ceramic materials, including two red shale, two fireclay, a silica, a silicon carbide, a carbon, and a high-alumina brick, were evaluated. Samples were exposed to 40 wt pct HN03 at 70° and 90° C and 60 wt pct HN03 at 50°, 70°, and 90° C for time periods of 110 days. Statistically significant changes in cold crushing strength were generally small or not detected, except for a strength drop in the high-alumina brick, which decreased in strength when exposed to the chosen acid concentrations at 90° C. Vol-ume and weight changes were also measured. The leach rates of Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Si, and Ti were monitored. Increasing temperature or a decrease in the acid concentration resulted in an increased ion leach rate. Of the conditions tested, the most severe corrosion occurred at 90° C for a 40-wt-pct-HN03 solution. The silica brick had the best overall acid-resistant properties, followed by a red shale and a fire-clay brick. The carbon and silicon carbide bricks are not recommended for service.

While Cr(VI) is a known carcinogen, the underlying biochemical mechanism is still not fully understood (1). In a pioneering study Jennette (2) utilized electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to demonstrate that a long-lived Cr(V) species is generated during the reduction of Cr(VI) by microsomes in the presence of NADPH. Later Wetterhahn and co-workers (3, 4) showed that incubation of chromate with isolated rat liver mitochondria causes the reduction of Cr(VI), as well as the formation of a Cr(V) species. Analogous Cr(V) species have also been detected in the reduction of Cr(VI) by other cellular systems such as Hanserulla polymorphared (5) and blood cells (6, 7). All these as well as other studies (8-12) have suggested that this Cr(V) species plays a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. Thus far, however, the chemical structure of this dominant Cr(V) species formed in cellular systems has not been identified, and this observation provided an impetus for the present investigation. Another reason for undertaking this study was that some recent reports (10-16) suggest that hydroxyl ('OH) radicals may also play an important role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. In particular, it has been shown that OH radicals are formed in reactions between Cr(V) species and H2O2 (13-16), and that the radical yield depends on the chemical structure of the Cr(V) species (15). For example, while Cr(V)-diol complexes efficiently generate OH radicals, another Cr(V) species, the tetraperoxochromate (CrO3/8) ion, does not (15). Thus in the present study, we focused our attention on the following: (a) structural identification of the Cr(V) species generated in the reduction of Cr(VI) by subcellular as well as cellular systems, using microsomes, mitochondria, and Escherichia coli; (b) possible detection of OH radical in the same systems since there is no earlier report of chromium-mediated generation of 'OH radicals in a cellular system; (c) possible involvement of molecular oxygen in chromium-related OH radical generation since a recent report (17) indicated that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent; and (d) elucidation of the mechanism of OH radical formation in these systems.

Electrorefined, magnesium-reduced, and sodium-reduced titanium samples were evaluated for recrystallization behavior, effect of cold rolling on tensile properties, and bend ductility. Curves were determined for the softening of 2.5 to 80 percent reduced cold-rolled metal that was annealed over a temperature range of 300° to 800° C. Upon annealing, coarsening of the grains was found to occur for reductions in thickness of less than 20 percent in titanium made by all three processes. The presence of metallic impurities greatly inhibits coarsening for reductions in thickness below 20 percent, but for reductions in excess of 20 percent grain size is essentially constant at each annealing temperature. The three grades of titanium did not harden excessively from cold rolling; both tensile and bend ductility were good for reduction in thickness up to 80 percent. Upon annealing, softening occurs between 400° and 600° C., and, based on microstructure and property studies, full annealing is accomplished after 30 minutes at 700° C. for the magnesium-reduced and electrorefined titanium and at 800° C. for the sodium-reduced titanium.

Southeast Alaska's mining industry has come to life after nearly 50 years of relative dormancy. Commencement of operations of the Greens Creek Mine in 1989 marked a turning point in the industry as the first large scale mining operation in the region since closure of the Alaska-Juneau Mine in 1944. The Greens Creek Mine is now the nation's largest silver producer. Other large scale mining projects are now on the drawing board, including development of the Kensington Mine and reopening the Alaska-Juneau Mine, which could become North America's largest underground gold mine. The region's mining industry includes more than these large scale projects, however. For example, a significant level of mineral exploration occurs each summer in Southeast Alaska. In addition, mining operations in British Columbia and Yukon Territory are generating jobs and income in Southeast Alaska.

Reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from State mine inspectors, for November, 1930, showed that 219 men were killed in the coal mines of the United States during the month, an increase of 25 over the previous month and 33 over November, 1929. On the other hand the production of coal decreased, the output of 43,329,000 tons in November being 8,397,000 tons less than in October and 9,005,000 tons less than in November a year ago. The larger number of fatalities accompanied by a smaller output of coal resulted in a higher death rate4 per million tons in November than in the same month last year or in October, 1930. The November rate was 5.05, as compared with 3.55 for November, 1929 and 3.75 for October, 1930. The increase in the rate for the industry as a whole was chargeable entirely to bituminous mines,, as the anthracite mines had fewer fatalities in November than in either of the previous months to which reference has been made. Reports for bituminous mines alone 'allowed that accidents at class of mines resulted in a death rate of 5.12, based on 195 fatalities and a production of 38,122,000 tons. This rate indicated an increase of 55 per cent over the rate for October, of the same year, and 72 per cent over the rate for November, 1929. The October record was 146 fatalities and 44,150,000 tons, and that for November a year ago was 138 deaths and a production of 46,514,000 tons. Twenty-four deaths occurred at anthracite mines in November, 1970: the output of coal was 5,207,000 tons, hence the rate was 4.61 per million tons. During the corresponding month a year ago there were 48 deaths and 5,820,000 tons of coal produced, which indicated a death rate of 8.25. In October, 1930, the death rate was o.34; based on 48 deaths and 7,576,000 tons.

In 1991, the USBM (U. S. Bureau of Mines) evaluated the mineral resources of the 174,550-acre Bear Creek-Poker Peak area. Located 40 air miles east from Idaho Falls, ID, the study area is in the Caribou National Forest but is mostly administered by Targhee National Forest. USBM personnel mapped and sampled mines, prospects, and mineralized sites in and near the study area. Five types of mineral occurrences were identified in the study area: phosphate, limestone and travertine, placer gold, coal and uranium (the latter contained in the coal), and oil and gas. The study area has a high potential for oil and gas; evaluation of these commodities were beyond the scope of this study.

The supply of manganese is a subject of much interest. The idea of obtaining it from rhodochrosite-MnC03 is attractive because the carbonate is supposed not to be so contaminated with impurities as the commonly utilized oxides. Large bodies of rhodochrosite-bearing rock have been known for a long while to exist at Butte, Mont. Hence samples were obtained from that place. In the two samples examined quartz was the chief diluting substance. The leaner sample was about one half quartz; some copper, lead, zinc, and iron sulphides were also present. The rhodochrosite amounted to about 40 per cent, so that the sample had a tenor of about 20 per cent manganese. This sample was the subject of the examination reported herein.

The Bureau of Mines tested cores from 35 wells from 14 oil-producing zones in southern Illinois, southern Indiana, and western Kentucky to determine why rates of water injection were apparently low in some zones. Since these zones contain only minor amounts of clay minerals, it is concluded that permeability reduction results from movement of dislodged silica particles and other material, including the clays, that lines the pores. Both single-phase and two-phase permeability measurements, however, indicated that most samples had only low to moderate water sensitivity, so that permeability reduction due to such particle movement should usually not be of practical significance. The effective permeability to water was considerably lower than the effective permeability to oil during two-phase flow measurements, as is typical of most reservoir rocks. It can be concluded, therefore, that relatively high injection pressures will be required in waterflooding thin zones or zones having low permeabilities.

A 5-hole pattern was drilled from the surface at a site near Oak Grove, Jefferson County, Ala., to degasify the gassy Mary Lee coal bed in advance of mining. Gas and water production was monitored for 1 year, 4 months to allow gas flow to stabilize fully. A thickened water stimulation treatment was designed and applied in one hole of the pattern to evaluate this degasification technique for the Mary Lee coalbed. A gas production rate of 70,000 fts/day after stimulation treatment indicates that the use of vertical boreholes coupled with hydraulic fracturing in advance of mining the Mary Lee coalbed would provide for more rapid degasification and could provide a possible source of natural gas.

The Bureau of Mins, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating a hydrometallurgical procedure to conserve cobalt, nickel, and copper by recovering the metals from the matte byproducts of smelting Missouri lead ores. For want of adequate processing technology the mattes are now either unmarketable or marginally so. The procedure involves leaching with manganese dioxide and sulfuric acid to obtain copper, nickel, cobalt, lead, and manganese sulfates, and elemental sulfur as expressed by the following reaction: MS + MnO2 + 2H2SO4 ? MSO4 + MnS04 + S° + 2H2O, where M = Cu, Ni, Co, and Pb. The leach solutions, containing near theoretical amounts of sulfuric acid and manganese dioxide at 85° to 100° C, convert up to 98 pct of the cobalt, nickel, and copper in the mattes to sulfates in less than 2 hr. As they are formed, the cobalt, nickel, and copper sulfates are dissolved leaving a residue of lead sulfate, lead, sulfur, and gangue. The soluble metals are recovered from the leach solutions by caustic and sulfide precipitation, and the residue returned to the smelter for lead recovery. The manganese can be reclaimed from the spent leach liquor as manganese oxide and recycled to leaching.

This Bureau of Mines report converts published data on the cost of ventilating uranium mines to a common price base and analyzes these data to determine the cost per ton of uranium ore at various levels of radiation exposure control. There appears to be an exponential increase of cost as the radiation level is lowered. The 1967 base costs are extrapolated to present dollars, and some cost comparisons are given for other radiation control measures.
