"Methods and costs of rock-dusting bituminous coal mines have been discussed in various publications by the United States Bureau of Mines and others.3 This paper discusses the present methods and cost of dusting at the Swastika mine of the St. Louis, Rocky Mountain and Pacific Co., Raton, N. M.In the Swastika mine the recommendations of the United States Bureau of Mines with regard to rock-dusting are followed at least as well as in any mine in the States of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. This mine is located at Swastika, N. M., approximately 4 miles west of the town of Raton and is in the Raton coal seam. The mine is rated as gassy and produces approximately 1,000 tons of coal per day.A mining system known as the ""room-and-pillar with cut-offs"" is used which results in recovery of nearly 100 per cent of the coal. The mine employs approximately 250 men.Ventilation is maintained by a Sirocco fan so arranged that the air current may be reversed and exhausting approximately 130,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 3 inches water gauge. This fan is supplemented by two auxiliary fans for emergency use. Three main entries penetrate the hill in a straight line for approximately 8,000 feet. The haulage is through the center entry, which is also used as the intake in conjunction with a two-compartment concrete-lined shaft located at the end of the entries. The main return for 3,000 feet inby the fan is 12 feet wide and 7 feet high. For this distance the ribs have been reinforced by a wall made of coke-breeze blocks plastered over with cement. Solid concrete blocks are used for the top row of blocks of the wall. Steel 10-inch I-beams spaced 40 inches apart center to center are supported on these solid blocks and thus support the roof. The next 1,000 feet inby has the same area, but the cement blocks extend to the roof, as no crosspieces are needed. The airways are kept clean and well rock-dusted.A rather unique system is used to handle gas feeders along the intake and haulage entries. There these feeders occur in the roof or where gas is apt to collect in high points along the haulage, tin funnels as large as 3 feet in diameter are placed near the roof. From these a 2-inch or other suitable-sized pipe is run into the return through the wall of the nearest break-through. A valve on this pipe line controls the amount of air pulled. These devices keep the high places clear of any gas, even when strong feeders are encountered.Fifteen-ton electric trolley locomotives are used on the main haulage and approximately 30 roller-bearing oars, each having a capacity of approximately 3,000 pounds of coal, compose a trip. All loaded tripe carry steel drags on the last car, and automatic derails are located at advantageous points throughout the mine.All loaded trips are thoroughly sprinkled on the sectional partings and at the main parting. The track is sprinkled every idle day, or if needed, every day; from a large tank mounted on a truck hauled by a motor. Neither nozzle nor spray is used, as these were unsatisfactory. The water leaves the tank. through a 11/2-inch valve and is permitted to flow on the road through a horizontal 11/2-inch T. Water is obtained from filling stations located throughout the mine. It is stated by the officials that the use of this method of sprinkling permits the entire haulage roadbed to be wetted down in two hours."

"INTRODUCTION In a previous reports results were given of a manhole investigation carried out over a period from June,- 1929, to July, 1930, in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. Considerable time was spent in this initial investigation in developing a suitable detector for determining the range of explosibility of the gases found in manholes. About 17,000 tests have been made with the detector since the investigation was started and its utility has been verified and its accuracy checked, by having complete analyses made of such samples that showed combustibles present equal to or above 25 per cent of the lower explosive limit, and those found deficient in oxygen.The initial investigation made in 1929 and 1930 demonstrated that the detection, control, and elimination of combustible hazards in manholes can best be obtained by a close cooperation of the interested parties through a systematic and continuous inspection of manholes, under proper supervision.COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATI0N DURING 1931The investigation carried out during the year 1931 has been along lines similar to that conducted during 1929 and 1930. In the present investigation the Edison Electric Illuminating Cc. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., have cooperated with the Bureau of lanes. The Boston Consolidated Gas Co. serves a major part of the territory under discussion with gas, but the tests covered the Edison territory irrespective of the gam company furnishing manufactured gas. A test crew consisting of two men, one an employee of the Consolidated Gas Co. and one an employee of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., has been continuously employed during the year in the testing of games in manholes served by the Edison system. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the special service department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin vice president of the Consolidated Gas Co.As in the previous investigation, all manhole tests were given test numbers. The test data sheets on which the information regarding the tests were recorded were prepared in triplicate, one copy going to the Edison Company, one going to the Gas company, and the third to the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh. These test data sheets were then filed (1) according to the town, (2) the street location, and (3) the manhole number; in this way a complete record pf each manhole tested was immediately available. "The problem of recovering potash from the mineral polyhalite (K2SO4.MgSO4.2CaSO4.2H2O), occurring in large quantities in the salt beds of Texas and New Mexico, has been under investigation at the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines continuously since 1928. Most of the results previously obtained have been published in technical journals and in a series of Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.The experiments described in the present report were performed to ascertain whether a continuous countercurrent extraction of calcined polyhalite by hot water would yield satisfactory recoveries and concentrations of sium sulphate in the top liquor. Previous investigation by Storch 4 had shown that the rate of solution of uncalcined polyhalite was too slow to be of value in an industrial process, and Storch and Clarke 5 had demonstrated that calcination of the polyhalite greatly, accelerated the rate of solution in hot water, allowing most of the potassium sulphate to be readily extracted."

It is not uncommon to find large quantities of combustible materials in underground metal and non-metal mines. Support timber is the predominant combustible material. Spontaneous combustion, welding and cutting, shorted or overloaded electrical cables and careless smoking are common ignition sources. More recently, there is increased use of diesel mobile equipment that requires fuel storage and transfer areas. Diesel fuel spillage on hot engine manifolds and motors can result in rapid flame growth and heavy smoke accumulation in a matter of seconds. In-expensive, reliable fire detection and suppression systems are available to provide early warning of fire conditions and to isolate and extinguish fires that originate in fuel storage and transfer areas. This report presents an example of how technology developed and demonstrated under Bureau of Mines Contract H0242016, Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection System, may be applied to protect underground diesel fuel storage and transfer areas. This paper presents the results of a study using computer human modeling to examine machine appendage speed. The objective was to determine the impact of roof bolter machine appendage speed on the likelihood of the operator coming in contact with. A contact means two or more objects intersecting or touching each other, e.g., appendage makes contact with the operator?s hand, arm, head or leg. Incident investigation reports do not usually contain enough information to aid in studying this problem and laboratory experiments with human subjects are also not feasible because of safety and ethical issues. As an alternative, researchers developed a computer model approach as the primary means to gather data. By simulating an operator?s random behavior and machine?s appendage velocity, researchers can study potential hazards of tasks where it is not possible to perform experiments with human subjects. Analysis information is helpful to the mining industry in terms of making recommendations that reduce the likelihood that roof-bolter operators experience injury due to contact with a moving boom. Data analysis of roof bolter simulations show that the virtual-operator?s response time has little effect on the number of contacts experienced. Based on frequency and cross-tabulation, regardless of other variables, contact incidents were always greater when the boom was moving up, were always greater on the palm, and were always greater for the boom part of the machine. Also, regardless of boom speed, the 25th-percentile-sized operators experienced more contacts than did other operator sizes. Furthermore, regardless of boom speed, the 152-cm mine seam experienced more contacts than did other seam heights tested. Results of a survival analytic approach suggest that controlling the boom speed is the most important factor in determining the risk of an operator making contact. Based on the data collected, boom speed greater than 41 cm/s results in a substantial increase in risk to the roof bolter operator and should probably be avoided. At speeds less than or equal to 25 cm/s are associated with a more modest relative risk, which represents an acceptable level of risk. Also, at speeds between 25 and 41 cm/s, there could be a particular boom speed in this range at which a significant inflection point in the relative risk estimates occurs. Based on the results, this issue needs to be addressed by future research.

Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative approach to secondary support in underground mining. Unlike all other supports that are either partially or fully prefabricated prior to being transported into the mine, the pumpable support is fabricated in place in the mine entry. This reduces the underground material handling efforts and thus the injuries historically associated with in-mine support construction. On-site fabrication also facilitates application of the support in areas that are inaccessible to transportation equipment such as scoops or rail cars, making it ideal for many bleeder applications. One of the main advantages of the pumpable support is that it fully bridges from the mine floor to the roof, thereby eliminating the requirement of “topping off” the support with wooden wedges or crib blocks that soften most other support responses. This report examines the development of modern pumpable roof support technology and provides a full description of the performance capabilities of each of the support products now on the market.

The behavioral accident simulator (BAS) is a computer program that can be used to simulate accident situations. It demonstrates how the potential to have an accident grows or diminishes as a result of changes in various environmental, organizational, and behavioral factors. It calculates the number of fatalities that may result from various conditions and graphically displays these data. The BAS is useful for studying systems of accident causes, for demonstrating the various ways to diminish fatalities, and for training employees. This Bureau of Mines report provides the detailed instructions needed to use the BAS.

Develop a new technique of in situ rock stress measurement which can be used when and where the conventional methods, such as the overcoring stress relief methods and the hydrofracturing method, cannot be effectively applied. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed basic principles to determine existing biaxial stresses in rock mass by using an instrumentation package consisting of one 3.8-cm-diameter hydraulic cylindrical pressure cell (CPC) and two 5.7-cm-diameter cement-capsulated flat hydraulic borehole pressure cells (BPC) to he installed in a single drill hole.

This report describes an experimental program which we conducted on behalf of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, to select from currently available materials two novel systems of construction for air-restraining bulkheads to be used in control of radon-polluted air in underground uranium mines. The program included both laboratory and field tests, the latter conducted in a portion of an operating mine owned and operated by Union Carbide Corporation at LaSal, Utah. The test site was a worked-out, double entry stope having a Volume of about 2000 cubic meters, and was located immediately adjacent to an exhaust airway. The bulkheads were constructed of 15 cm x 1.5 cm timber uprights, 5 cm x 15 cm horizontal members supporting a close-fitted 13 mm plywood curtain-wall., which was covered with a low-permeability membrane to seal in the radon-polluted air. The two membrane materials selected for testing were chosen from a list of twenty-two potentially acceptable candidates using criteria such as strength, flammability, ease of application, adhesion, radon permeability, and elasticity. Thirteen of the candidates were tested in our laboratories for adhesion to plywood and to both wet and dry concrete (simulating wet and dry mine rock surfaces), and for their general physical properties, including radon permeability. The final selections made by the Technical Project Officer, and based on our recommendation, were a pre-formed ethylene propylene diene monomeric rubber (EPDM) membrane 1.12 mm thick, normally used as a roof sealant in industrial construction, and available from Carlisle Tire and Rubber Co., Division of Carlisle Corp., Carlisle, PA, and Aquafas 48-00, a water-based mastic used in a wide variety of commercial applications and available from H. B. Fuller Co., Foster Products Division, Spring House, PA. The EPDM membrane was applied as a single sheet, laminated (dry) between two layers of plywood, and the Aquafas was applied both by troweling and spraying onto a plywood surface. In the field test, radon concentrations were continuously measured before, after, and in the trapped air behind each bulkhead. Temperature, pressure, and velocity of the air in the adjacent airway were also measured and recorded continuously. Radon fluxes at the rock/air interface and through the bulkheads themselves were measured manually on a frequent basis. All continuously acquired raw data were recorded automatically on two USBM Data Aquisition Systems (DAS), and the raw data were converted into engineering units and recorded on magnetic disks by a specially programmed microcomputer that was interfaced with the DAS's. Relatively clean (i.e. low radon concentration) air was pumped into a point near the face of one test bulkhead from a location 170 meters away through vent bag. Several air curtains and two air-restraining bulkheads were erected in passageways adjacent to the test area in an effort to control both velocity and radon concentration of the air flowing past the bulkhead faces. An average concentration of approximately 500 pCi/liter at a flow of 550 m3/minute was attained as the background concentration against which leakage through the bulkheads was measured. The entire field test period extended from October, 1981 to March, 1982, a total of six months, and was subdivided into seven successive time periods: 1) site preparation 2) background measurements prior to bulkhead construction 3) passive restraint, with bulkheads in place and totally sealed 4) open bleeder period of natural convection ventilation in and out of the bulkheaded area through a 10 cm (diameter) opening, with connecting tubing; leading into an Exhaust airway 5) open bleeder period, having forced exhaust through a 1.0 cm opening using a servo-controlled fan 6) charcoal trapping period, using the servo-controlled fan to exhaust air through the charcoal traps, to test the effectiveness of such traps in removal of radon from the exhausted air 7) site decommissioning Each of the two systems tested, one incorporating the pro-formed EPDM-rubber membrane and the other utilizing Aquafas 48-00, was assessed for effectiveness in controlling radon-polluted air by observing the change in the radon concentration in the ventilation air flowing continuously over the surface of each bulkhead. The sensitivity of the observed measurements was limited by the volume flow-rate of the ventilation air and the radon concentration in that air. The data would indicate that the observed increments in radon concentration in the ventilation air moving across bulkheads B-l and B-2 were essentially zero within the limits of sensitivity of the measurements. Data from radon flux measurement taken both on the sealed ribs adjacent to the bulkheads and on the bulkheads themselves did not differ significantly from blank data.

As part of a study on high-temperature ceramic materials, the ammonium sulfate, carbonate, nitrate, oxalate, and sulfate salts of yttrium, lanthanum, and cerium were analyzed thermogravimetrically. The temperature ranged from room temperature to 1,500° C. Each salt was decomposed by heating at a rate of 2.5° C. per minute, and some of the salts were subjected to additional rates of 5° C. per minute or 10° C. per minute. The decomposition sequences have been identified, and the temperatures of formation of intermediate compounds and of the oxides have been determined. The minimum oxide formation temperature of a given lanthanum salt exceeds that for the similar salt of yttrium, and both exceed that for the same salt of cerium except for one cerium carbonate. Variation of the heating rate indicates a thermal lag in the materials and produces the shift of formation temperatures to higher values and loss of resolution in the weight-loss distribution as the heating rate increases.

This Information Circular is an abstract of a manuscript which was completed in June 1933, by Mr. Hugh M. Wolflin, formerly of the U. S. Bur eau of Mines. This abstract has been prepared by Charles Will Wright for presentation at the February meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in New York. It has been necessary to omit many of the details and most of the cost data and tables, as well as the illustrations in the original manuscript. As the use of airplanes in mining developments is making such progress and as a publication on this subject to be of greatest value should include the most recent information, it is unfortunate that, due to a lack of printing funds, it has not been possible to publish this manuscript. The purposes of Mr. Wolflin's paper are: (1) To describe briefly what has been accomplished in some outstanding examples by the use of aircraft in the mining and petroleum industries, (2) To record costs, (3) To present available information and suggestions to assist in solving future air-transportation problems in the industries under consideration.

Various electrical and electromagnetic (EM) geophysical techniques are currently being evaluated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for their effectiveness in the detection and monitoring of electrically conductive (1 to 5 S/m) lixiviant (leach solution) to depths of 600 m, either above or below the water table. These techniques include magnetotellurics (MT) , controlled source audiofrequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT), resistivity and focused resistivity, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), frequency-domain electromagnetics (FEM), and time-domain electromagnetics (TEM). Of these techniques, TEM may be the most effective, but CSAMT and focused resistivity also hold promise. Geophysical computer modeling of the borehole TEM technique was conducted based on an idealized geoelectric section (layered earth) with characteristics based on the Santa Cruz porphyry copper deposit near Cas a Grande, AZ. Layer resistivities and thicknesses were obtained from geophysical data and geologic logs available from the site. Modeling of borehole TEM in both preleach and during leach situations was conducted. Simulating the TEM method using computer modeling proved to be encouraging since there were substantial differences between leached and nonleached responses. The modeling does not prove the effectiveness of TEM in the field, but does indicate that detection of deep lixiviant zones is theoretically possible.

Fire on surface mining equipment is a serious hazard to life and property. The Bureau of Mines, through a program of contract and in-house research, has developed and in-mine demonstrated reasonably priced, reliable automatic fire protection systems to deal with this problem. This report reviews the development and subsequent testing of systems for haulage trucks, front end loaders, coal augers, dozers, drills, and shovels. A variety of fire sensors, extinguishing agents, and control systems arc discussed in the context of mine equipment designs and operating environments

"The number of investigations reported during the past year indicates that control of the health hazard due to abnormal air conditions is still a matter of serious consideration in the mining, metallurgical, and allied industries.Australia. - In an investigation into the health and working conditions of employees in the mining industry of Tasmania and Victoria3, it was found that although pulmonary tuberculosis may occur early in life, silicosis is e disease of slow evolution and does not appear frequently under the ace of 40. A period of at least ten years in the industry was found necessary to produce silicosis, and in no case was the disease found in those who had not worked underground. A very high incidence of silicosis was found in all fields among those who had worked underground 20 years and longer. There was some evidence that silicosis complicated by tuberculosis may occur earlier than uncomplicated silicosis.England. - In a paper presented before the Section on Occupational Diseases of the British Medical Association, Dr. E. L. Middleton, the medical inspector of factories, called attention4 to the occurrence of silicosis in various industries throughout the country.punitive on some quite harmless industries. Thus Middleton says: ""Where the amount of dust is small the action of the phagocytes is likely to be effective, but where it is great . . ."" What dosage is indicated by ""small"" and ""great"" in this connexion? If the meaning of ""small"" were known, would it be correct to go on to say, as he does, ""each successive dose of silica produces a summation of effects""? Then, again, would it be fair to say ""a comparatively brief period of exposure may be the only determining factor""? What, in minutes, hours, or days per week, per month,' or year, is intended by ""a comparatively brief period""? ""Intermittency of the process"" is another expression used in summing up the reasons for and against a standardization of air purity by a gravimetric process or enumeration of the particles; the arguments against such a standardization are, by Middleton, considered strong, but they are by no means convincing to us. A standard has been accepted in respect of the amount of lead in milligrams per 10 cubic metres of air; Dr. Ronald Lane showed in another paper read that adherence to this makes the occurrence of poisoning highly improbable. Mavrogordato has placed on record figures of silica dust at different stages of the improvements in the workings of the Rand mines, and such a control is in constant operation in them today.We emphasize these points because apparently the Government has taken the unusual course of legislating first and postponing inquiry to a later date, as in the ""Various Industries (Silicosis) Scheme, 1939."" The insurance companies also have a considerable interest in the matter of compensation for the silicosis risk. Where exposure - as in the refractories industries, the grinding industries, sandstone industry, and pottery industry - is day in and day out, they rightly demand a premium far higher than for any other disease scheduled under the Workmen's Compensation Act - 5 per cent on the wages bill. row every industrial employer, such as the paint and varnish manufacturer, who has a sack of crushed silica in his store .room, from which he extracts once a week enough to make a paste With spirit and add to his other ingredients in order to give them the necessary ""bite,"" becomes involved, and may have to abandon the use of the material or pay 8 per cent on his wages bill for an absolutely negligible risk.. For meting out justice standardization seems urgently called for."

Industrial engineering departments perform staff duties and are most effective when sincerely supported by management. In accordance with the needs and desires of the mining companies involved, various industrial engineering functions have been adopted widely at western metal mines during the period 1950-60. Newly organized departments usually conduct method and equipment studies, work-measurement programs, and establish and maintain production standards. Supervisor-training programs and courses are effective in showing the relationship between supervisory responsibility and the purpose for which industrial engineering is practiced. Industrial engineering staffs of western metal mines are composed predominantly of personnel from within the companies. Experienced industrial engineers, not necessarily experienced in mining, frequently are hired by a company to help establish the department. Management consultants frequently are called upon to advise management and instruct department personnel in industrial engineering practices. Some departments have developed satisfactory industrial engineering programs without benefit of formal industrial engineering training or advice.

"INTRODUCTION In the State of Alabama few mines produce coal clean enough to be marketed directly without being washed. This is particularly true where the coal is to be used for the production of metallurgical coke. In washing plants where single-compartment jigs alone are used to treat a large range of sizes, it has been found that the washed coal finer than 1/4-inch contains a large proportion of free impurities and is much higher in ash content than are the coarser sizes. To reduce the ash content of this fine material with jigs usually entails a greet reduction in capacity and a loss of coarse coal in the refuse. This investigation, conducted by the Southern Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Alabama By-Products Corporation, was undertaken to determine whether the fine washed coal from jigs could be economically re-treated on coal washing tables.COALS TESTEDThrough,the cooperation of the Alabama By-Products Corporation, samples of fine-sized washed coal were obtained from their washeries at Bradford and Gamma.The Bradford mine, on the Black Creek bed, yields a low-ash, medium-volatile coal with fairly good coking properties. This coal is blended with coal from the Mary Lee bed for coking purposes and compensates for the high ash content of the latter. The Black Creek bed is about 30 inches thick and seam analyses show an ash content of from 2.0 to 4.0 per cent. In the Bradford mine the undercut is about 6 inches high, so that a large proportion of fines is produced."

AGAIN in 1963, as in nearly every year since 1946, the Canadian mineral industry has established a new national record in value of mineral production. The 1963 estimated total value of $2,976 million is 5 percent higher than the 1962 value of $2,845 million.2 As in previous years, metals made up more than half the value of total production. For selected years since 1949 the category percentages and total value are as follows: [ ] Crude petroleum, Canada's most valuable mineral product, accounted for 21 percent of the total value of minerals in 1963. In descending order came nickel 12 percent, iron ore 10 percent, copper 10 percent, gold 5 percent, and uranium 5 percent. Asbestos accounted for 5 percent, sand and gravel 4 percent, and cement 4 percent. The complete list of Canada's mineral products includes more than 50 basic commodities.
