Three hundred and twenty-eight mines and quarries, representing 36 States, took part in the twelfth yearly accident-prevention contest conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and known as the National Safety Competition. Four underground mines and one open-cut mine (which represents the quarry and open-cut mine group), each the leader in its group, were awarded the ?Sentinels of Safety? trophy. Relative standing in the contest" was determined by the number of days lost from accidents in proportion to the total number of man-hours worked. Since 1925, when the National Safety Competition was inaugurated, an increasing interest has been taken in it by mining and quarrying companies as a means of stimulating mine and quarry safety by competition among similar plants. Each participating plant can, on a basis of its standing and record in the contest, determine to what extent its safety program is succeeding or to what extent it needs strengthening. With this information, each company that has a low standing in the contest can intensify its safety-promotion efforts the following year to obtain a? lower rate and possibly win the trophy or achieve honorable mention in the competition. Except for 1929, the National Safety Competition of 1936 represented more man-hours of employment than any other year since the yearly contests began.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

A Fortran IV computer program entitled WAVE, which employs an explicit finite difference scheme for solving the one-dimensional wave equation for a time-dependent inelastic rock has been developed. The viscoelastic properties of the rock are represented in terms of a generalized Voigt model. The theory on which the computer program is based is rederived and a short description of the program is given. The computer program input instructions, a listing of the computer program, and example problems with required input and subsequent printed output are presented in appendixes. In the example problems) calculated results are free of spurious oscillations which occur in certain other methods of numerical calculation) notably the extended Ritz method.

The effect of gamma radiation on Pennsylvania anthracite and on reactions between anthracite and other materials was studied using a shielded , selfcontained 23,000 - curie cobalt 60 source . When anthracite was exposed to air at 65° C the reaction with oxygen was greater in the presence of radiation. than in its absence . Although drop- shatter tests indicated that exposure to radiation decreased the resistance to breakage of anthracite , this evidence of structural weakening was not supported by the results of grindability or particle- size studies . Irradiation caused definite changes in the gases evolved from evacuated samples of anthracite ; the percentages of hydrogen and carbon dioxide were increased, and the methane concentration remained unchanged . Carbon monoxide was evolved only from the unirradiated samples . Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR ) measurements indicated large differences between evacuated samples and those exposed to air . There was little or no difference between irradiated and unirradiated samples , except that the free- radical content of unirradiated samples of anthracite increased progressively with higher temperatures of evacuation , but in the case of irradiated samples , no such behavior was found . Attempts to produce carbon disulfide and calcium carbide by reacting anthracite with sulfur up to 120 ° C , and with calcium oxide up to 400 ° C , were unsuccessful .

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (C. The Shasta and California Iron-ore deposits are 14 miles northeast of Redding, Shasta County, Calif.; and since 1907 have produced more than 300,000 short tons of exceptionally pure iron ore. Although some ore was mined and smelted from 1907 through the First. World War, most of it has been produced from 1942 through 1945 for use in making heavy ship ballast and concrete anchorages for mines. Irregular masses of magnetite, ranging from lumps of a few tons to pods containing about 25,000 tons, occur associated with skarn near the contact between the McCloud limestone and a younger granitic intrusive. Some of the deposits are low-grade, whereas others are nearly pure magnetite. Selective mining and hand sorting are necessary to produce a high-grade product. Investigation of these deposits by the Bureau of Mines included 2,910 feet of diamond drilling, some surface sampling of the principal mineralized zone and beneficiation tests. Resulting factual data are given in the body of this report.

A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate natural gas as an automotive fuel and to provide guidelines for optimum engine adjustments for low exhaust emissions. The study was conducted using a single-cylinder engine, a multicylinder engine, and a total of eight vehicles. Results from single-cylinder engine tests showed that the light-load, lean-limit misfire region for natural gas begins at an air-fuel ratio between 150 and 160 pct of stoichiometric. Changes in ignition timing significantly influenced emissions of nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons, but had little effect on carbon monoxide emission. Low emissions can be achieved with current-design engines by adjustment of engine parameters, but only with heavy penalty to engine performance. Emissions from vehicles fueled with natural gas are virtually unaffected by ambient temperature change within the range 20° to 100° F. The organic emissions from engines fueled with natural gas were estimated to be 22 to 25 pct as reactive as the emissions produced using gasoline. Levels of exhaust emissions from vehicles fueled with natural gas were unchanged over 10,000 miles of normal driving.

"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they arc required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brakes" by G. E . Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:

The Bureau of Mines customarily publishes lists of equipment meeting its safety standards to keep the mining industry informed as to the development and availability of mining equipment that can be used safely. The present list supplements Bulletin 543, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953, as well as Information Circular 7722, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1953-54. Because standards have been revised and new ones added by the Bureau, this list contains classes of equipment not previously covered.

This paper sets forth the hazards of accumulations of explosive mixtures of methane and air due to inadequate ventilation, the causes of which are discussed as follows: 1. Lack of well-maintained air courses. 2. Air losses due to leaky stoppings, trap doors, and overcasts. 3. Faulty mining methods. 4. Poor supervision. A modified plan of room-and-pillar panel mine development is suggested, which, it is believed, will eliminate many off the hazards of gas accumulations inherent in the present method of mine development. It is also suggested that some water-proofing agent be used on the roof of permanent air-course entries in conjunction with roof bolting to eliminate the detrimental effect of the moisture-laden atmosphere during summer and thus prevent serious roof falls.

A new system for precisely counterbalancing and measuring vapor pressure operates by servomechanical principles . It was developed with the objective of determining the vapor - pressure equations of metal halides . The system is isolated from the vapor - pressure bulb by a diaphragm transducer that signals a pressure regulator to null any pressure difference that is detected . Pressure measurement and readout are continuously performed by a servomanometer , accurate to ±0.003 cm Hg for the range of 0.1 to 200 cm Hg . High response rate and sensitivity are obtained . Methods of use are described , and results for CdC1 and PbC1 , in agreement with data of other investigators , are given as examples .

This publication presents statistical data on oven-and beehive-coke plants in the United States. Information on the carbonizing capacity of the coke industry is important because of the close relationship between the coke industry and most of the other basic industries of our country. Coke is an essential-raw material in pig-iron production; also, coal-chemical materials are used to make fertilizers, paints, plastics, synthetic rubber, explosives, detergents, nylon, pharmaceuticals, dyes, and many other useful products necessary to sustain and improve the high standards of living in our country. Oven-coke plants in the United States on December 31, 1958, are tabulated in table 1. This tabular presentation shows the location, classification, number and type of ovens, annual coke capacity, coal chemicals produced, and name and address of parent company for each individual coke plant. About 86 percent of the capacity of slot-type coke ovens in the United States is owned by iron and steel companies. In most of these plants the coke ovens are integrated with the blast furnaces to facilitate transportation of raw materials for steel making. This has resulted in large coke plants, and the average annual coke capacity of "furnace" plants in 1958 was 1.3 million tons. Nonfurnace or "merchant" plants include coke plants associated with chemical operations, gas utilities, as well as coke plants that produce metallurgical, industrial) and residential-heating grades of coke and coal-chemical materials for sale on the open market. These plants ordinarily are not as large as furnace plant~ and annual coke capacity of merchant plants in 1958 averaged only 500 thousand tons. At the end of 1958 there were 55 furnace plants and 22 merchant plants.

"INTRODUCTION The Eunice field is one of a group in southeastern New Mexico producing oil and gas from so-called limestone-type reservoirs in which the productive strata are dolomite or dolomitic limestone ordinarily, wells in reservoirs of this type show wide differences in their productive characteristics, indicating erratic variations in porosity and permeability. Often there is a large difference in total footage of actual ""pay"" penetrated in neighboring wells and the vertical distribution of the ""pay"" within the productive strata varies. In the Eunice field there are few easily recognizable geologic markers to indicate true structural conditions of the oil-productive section, due to horizontal and vertical gradation in chemical compositions and lithologic characteristics of the strata. Geologic markers are found some distance above the oil-producing zones in this field and consequently they indicate only the general structure. Furthermore, no direct relation has been found between the general structure and the accumulation of oil within the reservoir.Many problems in well-completion and production practice have been met in the Eunice field because of erratic variations in porosity, permeability, in vertical distribution of ""pays,"" and the apparent departure from ordinarily accepted relations of oil accumulation to structure. A detailed study of the position and characteristics of the oil- and gas-producing zones aids production procedure. The methods employed in studying the Eunice field, discussed in this paper, may be applicable to other limestone-type reservoirs."

Impinger dust-counting methods are used by industrial hygienists for determining the number concentration of unhygienic siliceous dusts in industrial atmospheres. Various statements have been made regarding the size of the smallest particles revealed by the microscopic employed in such determinations. Published data on the subject are quite limited. This report presents information on the size of the smallest particles revealed by light-field and dark-field techniques applied to impinger and electric precipitator samples collected from experimentally established aerosols of silica dust and bituminous-coal dust. Size distribution and number concentration of particles of the various sizes in the aerosols were determined from samples collected by thermal precipitation simultaneously with the impinger and electric precipitator samples. The size of the smallest silica and bituminous-coal dust particles determined in the light-field counting method used was about 1./1, . There was relatively little variation in the values from 8 impinger and 33 A.-C. precipitator samples of silica dust and 13 impinger and 13 A.-C. precipitator samples of coal dust. The coefficients of variation of the values from the four sets of determinations were low, ranging from ± 7.7 to t 10 percent. This size of 1,14 is close to the limit of resolution of the microscopic method used and to various previously suggested values. The size of the particles determined in the dark-field counting method used was smaller than the size (about 0.28A ) of the smallest particles determined in the light-field, oil-immersion method used for the thermal precipitator samples.

As a part of the Bureau of Mines' intensive; 'investigation of domestic manganese deposits, ore-dressing studies were conducted on three samples of oxide and silicate manganese ores from various Wyoming properties. The samples wore as follows: 1. A 2-ton sample of ore was obtained by a Bureau engineer during examination of the Caulkins-McGuckin property in the center of Crook County, 10 miles north of Sundance, Wyo. The ore body was described as a vein deposit in rhyolite porphyry. 2. The J. B. C. Mining Co. submitted a 1-ton sample of oxide manganese ore from a property located 44 miles northeast of Rock River in Albany County, Wyoming. 3. A 1-ton sample of oxide-silicate-ore was obtained by a Bureau examining engineer from the Gheen property in the northeast corner of Washakie County, Wyo. The ore body was described as a replacement deposit in a country rock of silicified limestone. As the samples differed widely in physical and chemical characteristics and also in their response to methods of concentration, ore from each property was considered a separate ore-dressing problem.

"In a cooperative study by the University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, diesel exhaust and mineral dust concentrations have been measured for aerosols generated in the laboratory and in five underground coal mines. Three mines utilized diesel-powered haulage equipment and two used all-electric equipment. Two source apportionment techniques have been applied to differentiate between the mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations measured. The first technique, using a micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) for size selective sampling, is based on modeling aerosol size and the premise that the diesel exhaust portion of the aerosol is predominantly submicron and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater that one micrometer in size. The second technique, Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results.The MOUDI size distribution data were modeled to obtain parameters describing the fine and course fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each mode from both mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol sources. The results showed the size distribution of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the modes occurring at 0.8 µm. Less than 5 pct of the coal mine diesel aerosol was found in the coarse size fraction. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for using aerosol size to separate diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol during sampling.Based on the results from the size selective sampling, a personal diesel aerosol sampler has been developed for measuring diesel aerosol mass concentrations. Th.is sampler uses an inertial impactor to size separate the respirable aerosol at 0.8 µm. All material less than 0.8 µm is collected on an after filter for subsequent gravimetric analysis."

The data presented in this paper form the chief part of a general survey of the oil-shale resources of Indiana. Other papers* have already been published which contain data an various aspects of this resource. In combination, these papers present data with reference to the following points; (1) distribution of the New Albany shale; (2) amount of shale available; (3) homogeneity and thickness of the formation; (4) amount and quality of the oil obtained from the shale; (5) nitrogen content of the shale; (6) extractibility of the shale and its amenity to breaking; (7) some economic factors bearing upon the utilization of the shale; and (3) other miscellaneous factors and data. In the future, technical work on other phases of the general problem is expected to be done with the object of making a complete survey of this resource which is of much potential importance to the state and nation.
