The principal procedures for the statistical analysis of gold assay and other trace-element data depend on applying either the normal frequency distribution or the lognormal frequency distribution. The consequences of applying both methods are examined through reference to example data from United States and South African gold mines. It is concluded that for estimation of average grades, except for certain data with a very high coefficient of variation (ratio of standard deviation to mean), use of the lognormal distribution is ordinarily undesirable because bias may be introduced and little efficiency can be gained. However, if biased average grades can be tolerated, as in the examination of data from surveys in exploration geochemistry, use of the log-normal distribution may be desirable. Various statistical analyses are detailed, and the tables presented to implement the analyses are more complete than those previously published.

The new international fact of life that has emerged in the 70's is that foreign energy sources can no longer be considered either reliable or low in price. As a result, the United States is turning its full attention to its domestic energy resources. The figures about proved domestic reserves are often used to reassure us about the Nation's energy future: assuming a 50 percent recovery factor, there are at least 219 billion tons of recoverable bituminous coal and lignite, of which 31 percent is available by surface methods; proved reserves of crude petroleum and natural gas liquids total 34.3 billion barrels and 6.4 billion barrels, respectively. There is also about 4 billion tons of recoverable anthracite coal, a premium low-sulfur fuel of high heating value, which is all but priced out of the market because of the high costs of producing it. Total fossil fuel resources are even larger, although there are no guarantees concerning how much might become usable, and when, and at what cost. The figures, however, are impressive. They include the equivalent of about 200 billion barrels of oil potentially recoverable from high grade oil shale; 100 billion barrels in "heavy oil" deposits; and the equivalent of 25 to 35 billion barrels of oil in domestic deposits of "tar sands," and substantial quantities of conventional oil and gas resources. This Bureau of Mines report presents a set of guidelines for determining the distribution of product-of-combustion fire sensors in underground mines. Sensor spacing is defined in terms of sensor alarm threshold, ventilation flow rate, and mine entry dimensions. Sensor spacing guidelines are presented for detection of fires from two primary combustibles, coal and wood, which are common to the majority of underground mines. The guidelines are based on data from full-scale and intermediate-scale fire tests conducted by the Bureau of Mines.

The preparation characteristics of the coals of Buchanan County, Va., are described in this Bureau of Mines report. Twenty-one samples ,,,ere collected from 9 coalbeds in the county. Of these samples 13 were of metallurgical quality as received, and 8 required some upgrading to provide acceptable products. In general, the coals were of low to medium ash and sulfur content, and ranked as medium-to high-volatile bituminous. In 1963, production in the county was in excess of 13 million tons, of which 2.2 million tons were mechanically cleaned.

"Wien bituminous coal is burned in a hand-fired up-draft boiler used for heating purposes it has a decided tendency to produce smoke. A design of furnace and a method of firing and attendance that are satisfactory for fuels low in volatile matter, as anthracite or coke, are not necessarily Satisfactory for bituminous coals. It is therefore becoming common practice to use a special design of furnace for bituminous coals, in order to facilitate the combustion of the volatile matter and soot. This is done by (1) providing a larger combustion space to give more time for the combustion, (2) construction that will produce a better mixing of the gases and secondary air supplied over the fuel bed, or (3) keeping the gases at a higher temperature by preheating the secondary air, as may be done by surrounding them with refractory surfaces, or causing them to pass through a fuel bed of hot coke. A furnace may be built to use any or all of these methods of smoke prevention.In Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 303, Blizard5 and others give tests on a large heating boiler when burning coke, anthracite, and bituminous coal. Certair alternative furnace arrangements were used, but there was no material change in the furnace design for the various fuels. Since that time the manufacturer has made modifications in design to adapt it for use of bituminous coal, and additional tests have been made to determine how this change affected the production of smoke and the efficiency of the boiler."

The liquid-level gage described in this report is an instrument designed to locate liquid levels in wells rapidly and accurately and, with auxiliary equipment described, to follow moving liquid levels automatically. The depth at which the instrument makes contact with the liquid in a well is indicated at the surface by a depth meter on the cable to which the instrument is attached. When the gage is used to follow a surging moving level, the liquid depth is indicated continuously at the surface. This report contains a description and illustrations of the gage and outlines the operating procedures. The instrument is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and approximately 6 feet in length and may be operated through 2-inch tubing. The gage consists essentially of a float that moves upward with respect to the rest of the assembly, causing a change in the flow of electric current from the surface when the liquid level is reached. The instrument has been tested under a variety of conditions and has been found to be sensitive to changes in liquid level of 1/2 inch. Its accuracy is limited principally by the accuracy of the wire-line depth indicator used. It is not affected by pressure or temperature, and it can be run in open hole or under pressure through a lubricator. It employs only one electric circuit and can be run on an Amergraph single-conductor cable (type 1-H-0) ,

Argentina follows Venezuela and Mexico as the largest producers of crude petroleum and natural gas in Latin America. Argentina 1S practically self-sufficient in fuels, but relies substantially on imports for its supply of copper, iron ore, ferroalloys, sulfur, and fertilizers. Mining activity is limited and is in an incipient stage of growth, considering the country's potential for mining. Most nonfuel mineral output in 1979 consisted primarily of minerals used for construction, while only 9% are other nonmetallic, and 2% are metallic minerals. Argentina is Latin America's major producer of boron minerals and uranium (yellow cake). Mineral exports consist primarily of borates, uranium concentrates, and of late, some tin. These exports have in the past been shipped mostly to Great Britain. London banks have been involved in arranging financing for St. Joe Minerals Corp. IS planned development of the El Pachon copper deposit (see map), and were being counted upon to also back the development of large copper and manganese projects. The following is a review of Argentine mineral production in 1979: (For 1981, the production of boron minerals is put at 167,000 metric tons and uranium at 300,000 metric tons.)

The Bureau of Mines used a diphenyl ether calorimeter to determine the heat contents of natural and synthetic blast-furnace slags. For solid slags, enthalpy (HT-H298) at 1,448° to 1,680° K ranged from 282.1 to 348.5 cal/g (±3 percent); liquid slag values were 400.1 to 514 cal/g (±3 percent) in the temperature range between 1,626° and 1,890° K. Experimental results for liquid slags were 14.3 to 16.2 percent higher than the enthalpies calculated from thermodynamic tables; values for solid slags ranged from 5.3 percent lower to 3.9 percent higher than calculated values. Experimental results for liquid synthetic slags ranged from 14.9 to 24.3 percent higher than the calculated enthalpies; values for solid synthetic slags were from 1.0 to 3.4 percent higher.

The Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation to determine possible applications of acoustic energy at sonic and ultrasonic frequencies to improve ultimate recovery from oil reservoirs. A literature search was conducted to provide background information for initiating laboratory research. The purpose of the literature search was to review the uses that have been made of acoustic energy in the petroleum industry and to select procedures and techniques that could be applied to the solution of petroleum production problems. The characteristics (68)3 of ultrasonic energy make it potentially useful to a variety of industrial and experimental applications. Pulse techniques (99) are common in the testing of materials where inspection is accomplished by propagating an ultrasonic pulse through the material. Viscosity measurements (45) are made by interpreting changes in the absorption of sound as it is propagated through a flowing liquid. Cavitation phenomena (93) produced by high-intensity ultrasound in liquids have been used extensively in industrial cleaning, machining, impact grinding, and aluminum soldering operations.

The Kroll-Betterton process for debismuthizing lead is based on adding calcium and magnesium to impure molten bullion to form solid Ca-Mg-Bi inter-metallic compounds that float on the surface as drosses. Present practice in industry is to hand-skim off these drosses, often followed by hydraulic pressing to squeeze out some of the entrapped liquid lead. In an effort to develop an improved technique, the use of an argon-shrouded dipping centrifuge to perform the required phase separation was investigated. Centrifugation experiments demonstrated that the bismuth content of an impure bullion could be lowered from an initial 0.5 percent down to 0.03 percent with a lead recovery of 90 percent, which is comparable to lead recovery after hand skimming of drosses in commercial lead-debismuthizing operations. Centrifugation provides better control in removing drosses, faster operation with less oxidation and relatively little fuming, and recovery of a lead bullion that approaches commercial specifications.

Sheet mica is an important material in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment. Large quantities are consumed each year as an essential component in generators, transformers, radios, television sets, radar, electric lighting equipment, and electrical appliances. The nature, structural imperfections, and impurities determine to a great degree the usefulness of sheet mica. Proper processing and classification add greatly to its market value. This report is designed to assist producers in understanding the complexities of marketing muscovite sheet mica. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Special acknowledgment is due S. A. The method for determining the effective porosity, of oil- and gas- bearing sand described in this report is a development of an earlier method devised by Bureau of Mines. The apparatus has been improved and made more convenient to use, but the procedure has been in use for many years without essential changes. A tabulation at the end of the report gives the results of more than 2,000 porosity determinations for oil sands in the fields of 13 states. A selected bibliography of articles containing descriptions and evaluations of various methods of determining porosity Is a. part of this report. The method was devised and developed at the Petroleum Experiment Station at Bartlesville, Okla., as part of the Bureau's research on fluid-energy relationships and ,on methods of improving the recovery of crude oil from underground reservoirs.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding sum¬mers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.!The present report presents analytical data for 4,544 samples, represent¬ing the products of 124 companies. The samples represented in this report were obtained during December 19146, January and February 19-(. As in previous surveys, the companies covered Ly the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 2,368 samples, 319 items, and 113 brands; premium-price, 2,172 samples, 289 items, and 106 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. A laboratory study wan made to determine whether drying and preheating Colorado oil shale with waste retort gases has any appreciable effect on its oil yield. Samples of crushed oil shale were heated at subretorting temperatures in a specially constructed electric furnace by gases similar in composition to waste gases from oil-shale retorts. The results of this study showed that preheating oil shale with nitrogen or a reducing mixture had no effect upon the oil or water yield. However, oxygen in the preheating gas caused a decrease of oil and an increase of water. In general, the oil yield decreased with (1) increase in oxygen content of the heating gases, (2) increase in temperature of the heating gas, (3) increase in heating time, and (4) decrease in the particle size of tho shale. The decrease in oil and the increase in water resulting from preheating were due to oxidation of the benzene-insoluble organic material (kerogen) rather than to oxidation of the benzene-soluble organic material (natural bitumen) in the shale, A small amount of oil was volatilized during preheating, which would constitute an additional loss if prober precautions were not taken to recover it. The results obtained in this laboratory study indicate that oil shale can be preheated without appreciable decrease in oil yield by proper selection of preheating conditions.

As a result of a field examination made during the Bureau of Mines intensive manganese program, three lots of ore were procured from the famous old Paymaster District, 7 miles from Midway Wells, Imperial County, Calif. This district is an old producer and shipped approximately 10,000 tons of 45-percent manganese ore during World War I. A 2-ton lot of ore was taken of a Bureau engineer from the exposure of a small fissure vein in conglomerate on the Turtle Group of claims; 1 mile east of the Pacific Coast Manganese Corp. claims. The vein material consisted of manganese oxides, calcite, and quartz in fairly coarse association.

A new, experimental coke oven was installed at the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1948. This oven, designated as the Tuscaloosa oven, features a 17-inch carbonizing chamber, globar heating elements, and silica-brick heating walls designed to simulate as closely as possible carbonizing conditions in commercial, slat-type coke ovens. Zoned heat-input arrangements maintain uniform temperatures over approximately 95 percent of the total flue area. The reasons for constructing an oven of this size, the details of the design, and the operating characteristics of the oven were given in an earlier publication.2/ This report presents the results obtained from the first series of carbonizing tests on Alabama coals with the new oven. Factors leading to the development of standardized operating and testing procedures and the results of crosscheck determinations with a commercial oven producing foundry coke are included also.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,857 samples, representing the products of 103 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August 1955. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

Component failures in the electrical control circuits of mining machines account for a large percentage of the total downtime of the machine, Once a failure has occurred it is always a tedious and usually a time-consuming task to locate the failed component. Moreover, the pressure to quickly locate the cause of a delay can lead to compromises in safety. Thus an onboard diagnostic system, essential for an automated machine, would be a very useful addition to existing machines. This report details U.S. Bureau of Mines development of a generic procedure for synthesizing diagnostic systems for electrical-control-circuit failures in mining machinery. A continuous mining machine is used as the testbed to illustrate the application of the developed methodology. Substantive differences among mining machine control circuits made it impossible to achieve a generic diagnostic system, but a generic approach for the synthesis of the diagnostic system was possible. As the research progressed, it became apparent that an algorithmic approach was better than an expert-system-based implementation. A prototype system was constructed and used to evaluate the diagnostic system. Prototype implementation issues are also examined.

[Several new oilfields have been developed in northwestern Wyoming during the past 10 years, production is obtained from discontinuous, permeable sands enclosed within impermeable shales. The energy to drive the oil to producing wells in supplied by gas in solution in the oil. Most of the wells had high-initial potentials, but rates of oil production have steadily declined, indicating a dissipation of the driving energy and the possibility that large volumes of oil will remain unrecovered in the reservoirs. The studies reported in this paper were undertaken to develop laboratory data of the type most likely to be needed by persons studying the susceptibility of the Newcastle sand reservoir to secondary-recovery methods.]

Mainland China To Pay Japanese Company On Contract Claim. - Mitsubishi will receive $39 million from Red China, half of what was asked, for China's having, curtailed work on a 5369 million steel rolling mill at Baoshan near Shanghai. Copper Found in Chile. - Utah International Inc., in conjunction with Getty Oil Co., has discovered a cooper deposit in northern Chile. Early drilling reveals an enriched zone grading 1.2% to 2 3% copper. Chile already has tie world's largest Cu reserve base. Soviets To Aid Laotian Tin Industry. - The U.S.S.R. has agreed to help strengthen the tin industry in Laos, a client state. In the past, Laos has only produced small amounts of tin concentrate, 500 tons to 1,000 tons per year presumably shipped to smelters in Singapore or Penang, Malaysia. Under the agreement made in June, the Soviets are to supply equipment to increase the out put of tin from the Phontieu, Neng, and Nongsen mines and help Laos with the construction of a tin smelter. The U.S.S.R. itself is a net importer of tin, although a substantial producer of the metal.
