The first national survey covering sales of fuel oil by States and principal uses was made in 1926 by E. B. Swanson of the Bureau of Mines (then under the U. S. Department of Commerce) under a cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute. This annual study, covering the market for fuel oil, was made through 1930 with the financial help of the institute bat has since been continued by the Bureau up to the present time. The scope and coverage of the survey have gradually changed over the years as new uses for fuel oil have been found and new products have come into importance resulting in market expansion. Range oil (No. 1 fuel oil or kerosine) came into use for cooking and space-heating daring the depression era in New England, and it was first reported as a total in the 1931 survey. In 1934 the sales were compiled on a State basis. State totals for distillate fuel oil, Diesel fuel, and residual fuel-oil sales were first shown for 1934 and by principal uses and States in 1937. Kerosine deliveries by States and main uses were also released for the first time in 1937.

A computerized moving average technique was developed to interpolate coal seam characteristics between sample points. The interpolative method coupled with multivariate regression analysis and simulation procedures was used to forecast coal properties not readily obtained from an analysis of drill core samples. Coal property forecasts were of two kinds: (1) specific mine property forecasts that are suitable for mine product control and yield a good approximation of the local variation along both the vertical and horizontal axes of the seam, and (2) regional estimates where much of the local seam variation is smoothed out, but the general trends are maintained. Forecasts of the volatile matter, ash, total sulfur, and the heating value for part of the Pittsburgh seam located in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia were in good agreement with independent evaluation data. Spatial configuration for preparation characteristics, particularly, the effect of crushing on sulfur release, low-and high-temperature carbonization properties, the Hardgrove grindability index, the coal hardness index, gasification variables, and hydrogenation factors were constructed for the same area of the Pittsburgh seam. These forecasts may be developed from drill core data collected in the exploration phase of mining. The results, which may take the form of a series of maps, are useful to mining, chemical, and combustion engineers, to economists and mine managers, as well as to coal users for mine design, economic analyses, energy forecasts, utilization studies, mine product control, and environmental control and programming.

Surface mining drastically alters the ecological characteristics of the area disturbed and in some cases has a decided effect on surrounding areas. Vegetation is removed, topographic features and characteristics are changed, and the original geologic overburden profiles are destroyed. Spoil banks generally are a heterogeneous mixture of rock fragments, rock particles, and soil-sized material derived from the overburden strata. With proper mining techniques, the various strata can be partially or completely segregated. Segregation of over- burden material offers the opportunity to bury the toxic, acid, or salt-pro producing strata under growth supporting material. In some situations, lower strata may have more desirable characteristics than surface material and can be placed near or on the surface. For example, limestone strata appear in some lower overburden profiles that have shale and/or sandstone near the surface. Also, some lower strata have higher nutrient levels that have been leached from the surface. Experience has shown that natural revegetation is a very slow process on strip mined areas. Native vegetation may not be compatible with the environment on the mined areas, for example : 1. Low nutrients in the spoil. 2. Toxic spoils (very acid or highly alkaline ). 3. Surrounding vegetation may be of the climax type and may not have pioneer- or primary-invader-type species present. 4. The seed source may be to far away from the adjacent mined areas. Early attempts to revegetate strip-mined lands with trees also proved to be unsatisfactory as they did not provide the initial ground cover required to stabilize the spoil. Erosion control with trees only may take up to 10 years before the canopies close and an effective cover is established. They are slow to form soil profiles and do not provide effective chemical pollution control until long after planting. A quick growing cover of herbaceous species is necessary to obtain quick stabilization and initial protection against erosion by reducing runoff and rain-drop splash. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has designed and evaluated total mill ventilation systems at two different mineral processing operations. Both systems have proven very effective at reducing respirable dust levels throughout the mill in a cost-effective manner. A 25,500-cfm system installed at a clay processing mill provided approximately 10 air changes per hour. This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by approximately 40 pct throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 50,000 and 100,000 cfm of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 air changes per hour. Average mill-wide respirable dust reductions were 36 and 64 pct, respectively. Not only did these systems reduce respirable dust concentrations and increase visibility throughout the mills, they were also easy to install and required minimal maintenance. A total mill ventilation system provides a general purging of the mill air; the system should be viewed as a supplemental technique to assist other dust control systems in operation.

"On January 15, 1920, a man was killed by falling rock in a limestone quarry in Utah. The quarry was visited by a representative of the Industrial Commission of Utah, and the cause of the accident was carefully determined. The facts concerning this accident, and the Bureau's recommendations are given in some detail in the hope that quarrymen may take steps to avoid dangerous conditions, and thus reduce the liability to accident.The quarry rock face is about 180 feet high, and the ledge is covered with an overburden of 10 to 20 feet of a mixture of soil and boulder. The rock face is not vertical, but slants at an angle of about 45° to 50°, while the stripping face stands at an angle of 70° to 80°, and is flush with the rock face. The conditions are shown in the accompanying figure.The man who was killed was employed in breaking rock at the foot of the quarry wall. The sun had been shining on the stripping face, and probably thawed the ground, thus permitting a boulder weighing about 20 pounds to roll down the slanting face, striking, and almost instantly killing the workman who was working with his back toward the quarry wall."

Coal mining has been revolutionized by the continuous miner. This machine has replaced, or has combined into 1, 3 former operations: Cutting, blasting, and loading. During the 25-year period before this machine was introduced, advances had been made in transportation, but the actual "coal getting" remained virtually the same. As frequently occurs, the multiple-purpose continuous miner introduced a new hazard--more rapid liberation of methane. The coal output formerly obtained from 10 to 20 working places might now be obtained from 1. It is true that circulation of air was generally increased; but the bulk of this machine virtually precludes continuous flow of air across the face, where gas may accumulate. Apprehension about this possible hazard led the Bureau of Mines to test face atmospheres during operation; and Report of Investigations 5288, Methane Buildup During Cutting and Continuous Mining Operations (published in 1956), presents proof that real danger may be present in many otherwise well ventilated mines.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine the embedded hydrogen chloride (HCI) and smoke particle characteristics during combustion of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and chlorinated mine materials for development of a test parameter. The experiments were conducted in an approximately 20-L furnace at set furnace temperatures of 250° and 1,000° C, for a 14-min duration, with an airflow through the furnace of 10 L/min. The variables studied, as a function of time, were hydrogen chloride embedded on smoke particles, hydrogen chloride concentrations in the gas phase, smoke particle average diameter (dg) and particle concentration (no), and product of smoke particle diameter and concentration (dgno). Other variables included carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxygen (O2) concentrations; sample mass weight loss; and furnace temperatures. Results show that there is a correlation between embedded hydrogen chloride, hydrogen chloride gas concentrations, and inverse of the smoke particle diameter-concentration product (1/dgno); the higher the hydrogen chloride gas concentrations, the higher the embedded hydrogen chloride, the higher the 1/(dgno) values. These correlations will enable development of a simple test parameter to assess the toxic hazard that these materials pose during fire.

This report describes Bureau of Mines laboratory test results in electro-kinetic dewatering and consolidation of metal-mine mill tailings from five mines in the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, district. Classified (coarse) tailings, slimes, and unclassified material were separately tested. Tailings were placed in 0.3 ft3 plexiglass models, and dc potential was applied until dewatering ceased. Time-oriented measurements of water removal, changes in resistivity, and power consumption were recorded during the dewatering process. Moisture content and density of the dewatered material at test end indicated the method to be generally effective for all materials examined, but best results were achieved with well-mixed unclassified tailings.

This paper, which describes the milling practice of the Verde Central Mines, Inc., is one of a series on milling methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Verde Central concentrator is located in Walnut Gulch, about 1 mile west of Jerome, Ariz., and on the Jerome-Prescott highway. It is about 1,000 feet distant from the main shaft of the Verde Central mine and treats ore from this mine only. The mill is connected with the main shaft of the mine by a 24-inch gave railway, over which the ore is hauled in 5-cubic yard capacity, rocker, side-dump cars, by a 3-ton Brookville gasoline locomotive.

The following is a description of the methods employed at the Eureka-Asteroid mine, which is situated on the Gogebic range, at Ramsey, Mich. The mime is operated by the Castile Mining Co. under the direction of Oglebay Norton & Co. This paper has been prepared in accordance with an outline furbished by the United States Bureau of Mines, and in one of a series, on mining methods and costs covering the principal minim operations throughout the United States. This report describes an accident, which took place in the Chemical Corrosion Laboratory at the College Park, Md., Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The accident occurred while Walter L. Acherman, chemist, was performing a routine manipulation during a corrosion experiment involving commercially pure titanium and red-fuming nitric acid. There was a sudden and very violent reaction, and a large quantity of acid was thrown in the face and over the body of Acherman, causing serious injury. L. B. Golden, chief of the Chemical Corrosion Section, was exposed to nitric acid fumes during the ensuing rescue and first-aid operations and died on January 25, 1954. According to the medical report, the direct cause of Mr. Golden's death was pulmonary edema and confluent bronchopneumonia; the contributary cause, was inhalation of fumes from red fuming nitric acid. The following employees of the College Park Station contributed to this report by supplying information on the accident and assisted in the rescue operation: L. B. THIS SUMMARY appears in Minerals Yearbook volumes I and III, which cover mineral production in the United States, its island possessions, the Canal Zone, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as the principal minerals imported into and exported from the United States. The several commodity and area chapters contain further details on production. A summary table comparing world and U.S. mineral production also is included. Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operatons at or near mines.

The study of "bottom-hole' samples follow,-is in natural sequence the study of samples3 obtained under high pressures at the well heads of flowing wells. The principal object of this phase of gas-solubility research, started actively in January, 1530, was to gain a more accurate knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of the oil-gas mixtures that exist in natural reservoirs. In possession of actual data regarding the condition of the oil; the quantity of gas liberated from solution upon dimunition of pressure; and the relative volumetric proportions of gas to oil at various pressures throughout the flow string in a well, it should be possible to predict, with a fair degree of accuracy, what physical changes these mixtures would undergo throughout the life of a pool. Such information not only is important in designing flow strings in flowing wells but is important also in solving problems relating to pumping efficiency and the power required for pumping. Although certain fundamental rata Mere obtained in the stud of samples taken at the well head, "bottom-hole" samples are more representative of subsurface mixtures of oil and gas because they are obtained at reservoir temperatures, and before the oil has had the opportunity of intermingling with extraneous gas; that is, gas which either was not in solution originally, or which was liberated from solution at some higher pressure, and later became mired with the original undissolved gas.

The objective of this research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines was to determine the effects of AI additions on the sulfidation resistance of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys. A series of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys with and without -additions of 4 pet AI were tested in a wet S vapor atmosphere at 677 C. A study of the morphology and composition of corrosion scales indicated a different corrosion mechanism for AI-free alloys compared with AI-containing alloys. Aluminum-containing alloys formed a compact, tightly adherent layer at the metal-scale interface that reduced corrosion rates by a factor of 3 to 10 compared with that of AI-free alloys. The thin, adherent AI-containing scale limited inward diffusion of 0 and S to the base metal and outward diffusion of Ni from the base metal. Aluminum-containing alloys formed a three-layer scale in oxidizing-S environments, while AI-free alloys formed a less protective two-layer scale.

[The Bureau of Mines is conducting an extensive investigation of coal preparation in the Alabama coal fields in cooperation with the University of Alabama and coal-mine operators. In this investigation the drainage characteristics of typical coals from the Warrior and Cahaba n fields were studied. Tire main purposes of this study has been to evaluate no nearly as possible relative influences of certain factors on rate of drainage and to determine whether the drainage characteristics of coals from different beds or from different mines on the soma bed differ materially. A further objective was the development of a laboratory drainage test that would predict approximately the rate at which any coal will drain after having been loaded into a railroad car in a saturated condition. The study has been confined to samples of slack coals - that is, coals from which none of the fine sizes have been removed. The samples ranged in upper size limits from 7/16 inch to 3 inches. It did not seem necessary to study nut and egg sizes, that is, sizes from which the fine coal has been removed by screening, as these lose water so rapidly by natural drainage that they present no serious problem in dewatering after treatment in a washer. The significance of drainage characteristics of Alabama coals is apparent in view of the fact that not less than 70 percent of Alabama?s total coal product is subjected to wet washing before being materials.]

The use of techniques and equipment designed to pneumatically place backfill into an underground mine opening through boreholes for subsidence abatement has historically met with limited success, largely due to the inability to directly monitor the placement of the backfill in the opening. The success of a backfilling project cannot be guaranteed if it is not known whether the underground opening has been completely filled with backfill material. To overcome the inability to directly monitor backfill placement, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a pneumatic backfilling system that allows for direct viewing of the backfill as it is placed in an underground mine opening. This system utilizes a recently developed pneumatic nozzle coupled with an instrumentation package that allows for real-time observations and measurements of backfill placed in an underground opening through a borehole. The nozzle utilizes a high-velocity airstream to redirect backfill falling through a pipe in the borehole and directly in front of the nozzle; the airstream redirects and propels the backfill horizontally into the .mine opening at over 100 ft/s. The instrumentation package, mounted directly to the nozzle, contains a video camera, high-intensity lamps, laser-rangefinder, electronic compass, and water sensor.
