The Bureau of Mines evaluated two drill-hole probes for the delineation of Missouri lead ores. The battery-powered, portable instruments, weighing less than 30 pounds, were designed for logging holes of 1.8 inches in diameter or larger. These probes have dual scintillation detectors, balanced filters with a pass band for lead Ka radiation, and a cobalt-57 source of radiation. The results of field tests in Missouri confirm laboratory tests indicating that probe response can be correlated to lead ore grade using counting times of 10 seconds or less at any selected depth in the hole.

The Hopper-Feeder-Bolter (HFB) is a prototype multifunctional machine designed to improve productivity by minimizing continuous miner place changes. It is designed primarily to work beside a two-pass continuous miner, bolting on one side and then place changing to bolt the other side while simultaneously providing a surge car and lump breaker located directly behind the continuous miner. Surface testing was conducted at the Bureau of Mines Mine Equipment Test Facility (METF) to evaluate overall system performance and reliability. Tests were conducted to evaluate place changing, tramming, lump breaking, roof bolting, drawbar pull, conveying, temporary roof-support (TRS) capacity, lighting, and noise. Surface test results indicate the HFB is ready to be tested and evaluated underground in a production mode.

Three types of uncatalyzed diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems, three types of high-temperature disposable filter elements (DFEs), and one diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC) were evaluated in underground mine conditions for their effects on the concentrations and size distributions of diesel aerosols. Those effects were compared with the effects of a standard muffler. The experimental work was conducted directly in an underground environment using a unique diesel laboratory developed in an underground experimental mine. The DPF systems reduced total mass of aerosols in the mine air approximately 10-fold for light-load and 20-fold or more for high-load test conditions. The DFEs offered similar reductions in aerosol mass concentrations. The efficiency of the new DFEs significantly increased with accumulation of operating time and buildup of diesel particulate matter in the porous structure of the filter elements. A single laundering process did not exhibit substantial effects on performance of the filter element. The effectiveness of DPFs and DFEs in removing aerosols by number was strongly influenced by engine operating mode. The concentrations of nucleation mode aerosols in the mine air were found to be substantially higher for both DPFs and DFEs when the engine was operated at high-load modes than at low-load modes. The effects of the DOC on mass and number concentrations of aerosols in mine air were relatively minor when compared to those of the DPF and DFE systems.

The Iron Mountain investigations were part of a comprehensive program for making a national inventory of raw materials used in the production of steel. A tentative program of core drilling by the Bureau of Mines was set up for exploration of more promising iron deposits. Iron Mountain was selected as worthy of investigation because it could serve as a potential source of ore for the war-created steel plant at Fontana, Calif. The deposits were reported on by an engineer in October 1943. The purpose of the project was to determine the lateral and vertical extent of ore bodies and to obtain accurate material data on them.

The Bureau of Mines produced several series of titanium castings in order to investigate the feasibility of producing commercial-grade titanium castings in bentonite-bonded olivine or zircon sand molds. The use of these molds for titanium casting was investigated as a possible alternative to the industrially used rammed graphite process. Parameters investigated were mold mixtures, mulling, gating, venting, drying, and mold washing. The investigators found that castings with superior ductility and fatigue life, compared with rammed graphite castings, could be made by fume-free pro-cesses in molds bonded by western bentonite, using either olivine or zircon sand. Zircon molds were satisfactory for both light-and heavy-sectioned castings. However, olivine molds were suitable only for light-sectioned castings because the mold-metal reaction became excessive during the pouring of heavy-sectioned castings.

Chlorates and perchlorates, when mixed with certain reducing materials, may give a detonating explosive of considerable power. Concerning explosive chlorate mixtures, Guttman3/ states that they "have at all times fascinated inventors on account of the large amount of oxygen stored up in potassium chlorate, which can be given off so readily. When Lavoiser and Berthollet tried to make a chlorate powder in a stamp mill in 1788, they made a great show of it, and even two ladies were present. Unfortunately, after a certain amount of pounding the powder exploded and killed an official and the daughter of the Government commissary, who assisted at the experiments.***. It is interesting to observe how the same old mixtures are proposed over and over again with slight alterations only, in order to qualify for a patent. Potassium chlorate with some carbonaceous matter like charcoal, sugar, starch, glycerin, flour, or sometimes a vegetable or mineral oil and the like occurs again and again." "INTRODUCTION Need for More information on Spark IgnitionMany questions have yet to be answered more completely concerning the ignition of flammable gases and vapors by electric sparks. Among these one might mention the following: How do the mixture limits for ignition by sparks and by other means compare? Are the most explosive mixtures of the gases the most easily ignited? How ""hot"" must the spark be or what is the minimum energy required for ignition? Does the electric spark act merely as a source of thermal energy or do aggregations of ions, electrons, and metastable atoms formed during and just before the spark play an important part in promoting chemical reactions that ultimately lead to ignition? It is possible for ignition to occur as a result of a silent or brush discharge? How do the ignition energies with single and rapidly recurring sparks differ? What is the relative effectiveness of long, tenuous sparks in ignition as compared with intense, short-gap sparks of equal energy? What is the influence of the material, size, and shape of the spark electrodes? Does the energy for ignition change noticeably with moderate changes in pressure and temperature of an enclosed gas mixture? What order of lag exists between the occurrence of an incendiary spark and the first evidence of flame propagation? What part of a spark in space and time is most effective in producing ignition? Answers to these questions bear directly on the general problem of flame initiation and propagation and, if sufficiently comprehensive, should contribute much to an understanding of the actual mechanism of combustion."

The devitrification of lithium silicate glasses was studied to determine the effect of annealing temperature, composition, and additives on nucleation and crystallization. High-purity glasses, prepared from reagent-grade chemicals, had close to optical quality when prepared by a vacuum induction melting method developed during this research, The progress of devitrification was traced by differential thermal analysis and thermal expansion for those lithium metasilicate-silica compositions containing 80 to 90 percent silica. Microscopic studies of glasses partially devitrified at various temperatures and annealing times indicated that the primary initial mode of formation of individual crystals ,vas from densely crystalline zones that filled in as crystallization advanced Of the additives tested, calcium, potassium, and sodium helped promote devitrification with the least cracking or surface deformation. Tin oxide was most effective in reducing volume contrast ion during devitrification, but was not ClS effective in preventing cracking as calcium or potassium additions.

Roof failures in underground coal mines are related to the lithology and geologic structure of the roof. There are two distinct suites of roof rock above the Herrin (No. 6) Coal in Illinois, and each has distinctive patterns of structure and roof failure. In black shale-limestone roof areas, roof instability is correlated with thinning of limestone beds and presence of faults and clay dikes. In gray shale roof regions, the prime roof hazards are posed by rolls, shear bodies, and presence of coal or carbonaceous partings in the roof. Most structural features examined are believed to have formed during early stages of sediment diagenesis and compaction. Structural trends and lithologic patterns are strongly interdependent for this reason. In many cases geologic patterns are so complex and locally variable that prediction of roof stability far in advance of mining is difficult. The need for greater flexibility in roof control planning is apparent.

"INTRODUCTION The continuous mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners which were designed for increased productivity have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. Inhalation of this respirable dust by miners causes the Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Concern for CWP increased in the United States following a 1963-65 survey that showed definite x-ray evidence of CWP in 9.8 percent of working miners and in 18.2 percent of nonworking miners in the Appalachian bituminous coal region (Breslin and Niewiadomski, 1982).One of the major objectives of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was the prevention of CUP. This law initially limited the daily average exposure of coal miners to 3 mg/m3 of respirable dust. However, following the results of a probabilistic model developed by Jacobsen, et. al. in 1971, the limit was reduced to a mass concentration of 2 mg/m3 unless quartz content exceeds 5 percent, a rare occurrence in mines. Based on x-ray categorization prior to death it is believed that the mass concentration in the respirable fraction is a parameter of primary interest for hygenic evaluation of dust exposure. Morgan, Burgess and Jacobson (1973) suggested that the quantity of inhaled dust, although influential is not the only aspect of exposure which is significant in producing CWP. Miners working in higher rank coal (anthracite) mines are more susceptible to CWP (Morgan, Burgess and Jacobson, 1973). This also confirms the findings of the British (Bennett, Dick and Kaplan, 1979 and Hurley, et. al., 1979) and Germany (Reisner and Rubock, 1977). Based on the cytotoxicological evidence Reisner and Rubock (1979) suggested that when coal properties are similar, increasing quartz and mineral content increases toxicity. David, Ottery and Le Roux (1975) examined that as the severity of the CWP increased the retention of the coal dust content in the pulmonary region remained the same, while that of quartz content increased significantly. Leiteritz, Baur and Bruckman (1971) studied the various components of coal dust and showed that coal particles comprised a smaller fraction of the mass of fine dust than did particles of quartz and minerals. It is ironic that quartz and mineral matter both comprise smaller fractions of the higher rank coal dust (Dodgson, et. al., 1971 and Dwiggins, 1981). Results of a recent research revealed that quartz or any other mineral examined had no strong or consistent effect on the incidence or progress of CWP (Attfield, 1984) while Dodgson, et. al., (1971) concluded that high exposures to minerals such as illite, kaolinite and mica will retard the progress of CWP. Size and shape characteristics are believed to be important in the relationship between mineral particles and health effects (Shedd, Virta and Wylie, 1982)."

Steel tanks often corrode rapidly in oil fields where the gas produced with crude petroleum contains an appreciable quantity of hydrogen sulphide. In many instances working tanks have been discarded after only six months of service because of failure induced by corrosion. Aluminum has been used for some time in the fabrication of certain equipment incidental to the handling of oils containing hydrogen sulphide gas in solution, and has exhibited no serious corrosive action. These uses indicated that aluminum tanks might be equally effective in counteracting hydrogen sulphide corrosion. Consequently, in the spring of 1928, an all-aluminum stock tank of 500 barrels capacity and a "composite" tank of equal capacity, having a steel bottom and bottom ring and an aluminum top and top ring, were placed in service on the State-Lassiter lease of the Gulf Production Co. in Crane County, Tex. These tanks were under observation for one year, the test being sponsored by the Gulf Production Co., the Aluminum Co. of America, rind the Parkersburg Ric and Real Co. The results of this preliminary test sustained the belief that aluminum is highly resistant to hydrogen sulphide gas and likewise indicated the type or grade of aluminum which could be most economically used for lease tankage. However, in this preliminary test the Wake were not subjected to contact with the large quantities of highly concentrated brines such as often are associated and produced with crude oil. Therefore, it was suggested by representatives of .the Aluminum Co. that additional tests be made to include production conditions in which large quantities of brine would be handled, for past experience had shown that aluminum often is susceptible to the corrosive action of brines.

At the request of the War Production Board a preliminary examination of the Big Ben molybdenum prospect near Neihart, Cascade County, Mont., was made by the Bureau of Mines under G. N. Bennett, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines Montana district office, in September 1942. Formal investigation, consisting of sampling, core drilling, and metallurgical testing, was later undertaken and completed in 1943. Field work was directed by Robert D. O'Brien, mining engineer, Montana district office, under the supervision of E. W. Newman, supervising engineer, Montana district office. This report describes the deposit, presents the factual data obtained from the sampling and core-drilling operations, and summarizes the results of the metallurgical studies. The deposit was first located and prospected in 1922 by the present owner, Frank Mansikka of Neihart, Mont. Periodic examinations made by responsible mining interests were culminated in 1938 when the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. optioned and investigated the property. No ores have been produced from the deposit to date.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) continues to be a concern of the mining industry. A new noise standard (30 CFR, Part 62) is aimed at reducing NIHL in mining through engineering and administrative noise controls. However, the difficulty and expense of implementing engineering controls can make administrative controls an attractive alternative for reducing worker noise exposure. Over the last three years, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted worker noise exposure surveys in underground and surface coal mines and in coal preparation plants. The surveys revealed numerous possible administrative controls and an approach to implementation and analysis. The surveys have shown that worker dosimetry, time-motion studies and equipment noise profiling are important aspects of effectively utilizing administrative controls. A description of the approach for selecting, implementing and evaluating administrative controls and a list of possible administrative controls are reported.

This work was undertaken to determine the feasibility of making mixed diborides of two metals directly from the metal oxides , boron carbide and carbon . The diborides (Ti , V ) , B₂ , (Ti , Cb) B₂ , and ( Ti , Ta ) B₂ were prepared in a crucible resistance furnace at 2,100 ° C , and X- ray- diffraction analyses showed each was a homogeneous solid solution containing approximately equal molar contents of the given diborides . The diboride powders were cold - pressed ; sintered to 2,300 ° C , and evaluated for mechanical strength , rate of oxidation , and resistance to molten metals . The diboride ( Ti , Ta ) B₂ exhibited the best mechanical properties ; the diboride ( Ti , Cb ) B₂ , the lowest cumulative rate of oxidation . The mixtures were stable in the presence of molten aluminum and copper but were attacked by molten Ti , Zr , and Cr .

"Chromates are known to induce tumors (1, 2), mutations (3), and DNA damage (4-6). However, the underlying biochemical mechanism(s) is (are) not fully understood (6). Recent studies have indicated that hydroxyl (·OH) radical may play an important role (7-11). The mechanistic studies of Cr(Vl)-related ·OH radical generation in biochemical systems have shown the reaction of a Cr(V) species with hydrogen peroxide (H20 2 } through a Fenton-like mechanism to be one of the important steps (9-11): Cr(V) + H20 2 - Cr(VI) + ·OH + OH-. (1)In biological systems the Cr(V) species are generated via the reduction of Cr(VI) by a variety of components, such as microsomes (12), mitochondria (13), mitochondrial electron transfer complexes (14), and at least three flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase (GSSG-R),3 lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) (9, 15, 16). In the case of flavoenzymes, Cr(V) formation is accompanied by the reduction of molecular oxygen ( 0 2 ) to H20 2 • The Cr(V) species then reduces H20 2 to generate •OH radicals and Cr(VI) (16).To understarid the mechanism by which Cr(V}-generated ·OH radicals cause cytotoxicity, Aiyar et al. The study described in this report was undertaken to obtain information on the character and effect of antimony additions to titanium. The availability of high-purity, low-hardness titanium metal, resulting from fused-salt electrorefining techniques, permitted a reassessment and evaluation of the physical behavior of titanium-antimony alloys. Alloys, based on several grades of titanium containing up to 10 percent antimony, were arc-melted and processed to sheet by hot and cold rolling. Properties and characteristics were evaluated by hardness tests, hot and cold rollability, annealing treatments, metallographic examination, and tensile tests.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on methods for the rapid identification and sorting of mixed scrap metals and alloys so that domestic scrap resources can be fully utilized. One method, spark testing, is the examination of the pattern of sparks that results when a metal or alloy is ground on an abrasive wheel. This technique requires experienced sorters. Bureau researchers have shown that spectrophotometric methods can be used in lieu of the highly skilled sorter. The spectra of a mild steel, an HSLA steel, several stainless steels, and four nickel-base alloys have been measured. Differences in the spectra that are sufficient for identification are apparent.

This report describes a laboratory investigation of the effectiveness of low-pressure steam and a steam-water spray sequence for the collection of airborne respirable (<10 µm) coal dust. Comparison of present results to previous results obtained with water spray alone indicates that the use of steam in a steam-spray sequence increases the collection efficiency by about 14 percent over that obtained by water spray alone. However, the use of steam to collect airborne dust requires cooling the steam-dust mixture in order to achieve condensation of the steam, and steam does not appear to be an attractive approach for collecting airborne dust in underground coal mining operations.

Support of the immediate roof in coal mines is essential for their safe operation, and timbers are the most common means of support. Their effectiveness depends upon their resistance to decay. The theory has been advanced by some mine operators that rock dust, which is applied to ccal-mine workings to prevent propagation of explosions, accelerates the decay of mine timbers. As the results of part 1 of this study were inconclusive, the study was continued. Its principal objectives are: 1. To determine the effect of rock dusting upon decay of mine timber. 2. To compare the extent of decay of timbers in two mines in which underground conditions are similar. 3. To determine the loss in strength of the timbers after exposure to mine atmosphere. The studies were carried on in the Crucible mine of the Crucible Fuel Co. where the first part of this study was made, and in the Isabella mine of the Weirton Coal Co. The mines are on the Monongehela River and are adjacent.
