The Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop preliminary engineering data necessary if the cobalt-rich manganese crusts that occur in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Hawaiian Archipelago are to be mined. The research was divided into the following sections: (1) physical, mineralogical, and chemical descriptions; (2) mechanical property testing, such as compressive strength, tensile strength, and a rippability index; and (3) mechanical cutting characteristics, including average and peak cutter forces, the specific energy, and cuttings size distribution. Section 1 utilized microscope, X-ray powder diffractometer, and electron microprobe analyses. Section 2 utilized standard mechanical property testing techniques. Section 3 utilized a converted planer mill with full-size coal cutters to fragment the crust and substrate samples. The manganese crust samples were mainly manganese and iron oxides and hydroxides with an average cobalt content of 1 pct and had a nucleus or substrate of rock or sediment. The significant results shown by the mechanical property and cutting tests are that the crust and all but two types of substrates (basalt and trachyte) are weak materials and easily cut with standard drag cutters. The crusts are generally comparable to medium hard coal in strength and in their resistance to cutting.

This report describes results of tests on the desilication of solutions resulting from the leaching of lime-soda sinters. Desilication was accomplished by heating the solutions in an autoclave. A liquor relatively free of silica was obtained after 30 minutes of heating at 200 p.s.i.g. in the presence of lime. The addition of lime improved desilication, but the rate and efficiency of desilication was effected by the quality of lime used. The optimum quantity of lime for effective desilication was about 6 grams per liter. A lesser quantity gave poorer desilication, and a greater quantity increased the alumina loss without improving desilication. The alumina loss was approximately proportional to the lime added. A complex structure, called artificial noselite in this report, was the only silica bearing compound detected in the desilication precipitate. Other compounds present were Ca(OH)2 (calcium hydroxide), CaCO3 (calcium carbonate), and Ca [A1(OH)6]2 (hydrated tricalcium aluminate). Sodium carbonate in the leach liquor retarded the formation of the calcium aluminate; hence it decreased the alumina lost to the precipitate. The extraction of alumina from aluminum silicate materials by the limestone soda-sinter process has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines for many years. The process consists of the following major operations: Blending the aluminum silicate with limestone and soda ash in such proportions that dicalcium silicate and sodium aluminate are formed on sintering; leaching the sinter in a carbonated caustic solution to extract the soluble alumina; purifying the leach liquor by the precipitation of soluble silica (this precipitate is designated desilication precipitate in this paper); precipitating alumina trihydrate from the purified liquors by carbonating with carbon dioxide gas; and calcining the trihydrate to alumina. "INTRODUCTION The Powhatan mine of the Franklin Coal Mining Co. is located in the western part of Jefferson County, Ala., on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, 40 miles west of Birmingham. The Mary Lee bed at this point yields coal with fair coking qualities, but with an ash content as mined so high as to prohibit its use in the production of metallurgical coke. At present the entire output of the mine is washed in single-compartment jigs and marketed as locomotive and domestic fuel.Figure 1 gives a typical seam section of the Mary Lee bed at the Powhatan mine. This section shows that the bed is divided by rock partings into three benches. In many parts of the mine, particularly in the older workings the roof rock is so weak that it can not be held without excessive timbering. This condition has restricted the operation in many parts of the mins to the middle and bottom benches of coal. The 6 inches of draw rock between the top and middle benches is very strong and makes an excellent roof requiring only a normal amount of timbering to support it. In the newer workings of the mine the character of the rock above the top bench is strong and it is believed that in the future it will be possible to work all three benches. This study was undertaken for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the Mary Lee bed at Powhatan and the effect on these characteris-tics of including or omitting the coal from the top bench. It was also the purpose of the study to show whether it would be possible to produce a washed product sufficiently low in ash to be used for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. This paper is one of a series of reports on the washability of Alabama coals which is being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and tin University of Alabama. With the cooperation of the coal producers of Alabama. It contains the results of screen sizing and float-and-sink tests of representative samples of run-of-mine coal, and the results of table tests on the minus 3/16-inch sizes of the raw coal."

Standard smoldering and flaming combustion tests using smaIl coal samples have been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as a method to evaluate the response of a smoke detector. The tests are con-ducted using a standard smoke box designed and constructed according to Underwriters Laboratories. The tests provide a standard, easily reproducible smoke characteristic for smoldering and flaming coal combustion, based upon a comparison of the smoke optical density and the response of a standard ionization chamber to the smoke. With these standard tests, the range of threshold limits for the response of a smoke detector and the detector's reliability can be evaluated for nearly identical smoke visibility and smoke physical characteristics. The detector's threshold response limits and reliability need to be well defined prior to the instrument's use as part of a mine fire warning system for improved mine safety.

In contrast to the large fund of information available on the carbonizing properties of Eastern U.S. coals, the experimental data available for most Western U.S. and foreign coals are meager. To supply some self-consistent data, the Bureau of Mines conducted 220 low-temperature carbonization assay tests at 500° C. in a laboratory-scale carbonization apparatus. The results are included in this report. The U.S. coals tested are from Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. Assays were also made on coals from Canada, Ecuador, France, Greece, India, Mexico, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Yugoslavia. In addition, one assay of pine sawdust and one assay of a peat from Ireland are reported. Prediction equations were developed relating the yield of products of carbonization obtained at 500° C. in the assay unit to the proximate and ultimate analyses of the coals. The equations for predicting the yields of tar plus light oil, char, and gas, and the heating value of the gas, are considered good, each equation having a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.90 or higher. The equation predicting volume of gas obtained upon carbonization is considered as fair, with a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.84. A reproducibility study of the assay made on 10 replicate samples of a subbituminous coal indicated that the standard deviation of the individual products was 0.31 percent or less.

About mid-December 1936, the safety director of a large coal corporation visited the authors at the Bureau's Experimental coal mine to discuss a rock-dust barrier he had invented primarily for use in trackless entries of coal mines. The rock dust in this device was carried in its original paper containers and means were provided for ripping these open so that the dust might be scattered in the path of an explosion. The inventor termed the device a "bag barrier", and this term has been adopted in the present paper for convenience. At that time the device was in an early stage of development, and the inventor felt that the barrier should be tested to determine whether it had enough promise of being successful to justify further development. The matter was taken under consideration and finally three tests were made during the week of February 15, 1937. It was concluded that while the device did stop an explosion in two of the three tests, it was much loss effective than ordinary rock dusting, and that too few data were obtained to permit direct comparison with tests of other barriers. Apparently, the conditions under which the device could, be successful were somewhat limited, out the limits could not be defined without additional tests.

This paper describes the methods and equipment developed at the Bureau's Experimental Oil-Shale mine near Rifle, Colo., for placing men in position to scale loose rock from the walls, pillars, and roofs of high stopes or rooms. The equipment developed at Rifle has application not only in oil-shale mining but in most of the country's underground limestone mines and in the exploitation of other mineral deposits mined in high stopes by room-and-pillar methods. Equipment in use at Rifle includes: 1. A boom-type scaling rig with a self-leveling platform constructed on a small "cat"-mounted crane. Men working from the platform on this machine can efficiently scale mine walls and roofs 27 feet above the floor. 2. A conventional fork-lift truck modified to provide a remotely controlled working platform from which men can scale to heights 27 feet above the mine floor. The platform on this unit is larger than on the boom-type rig and allows the men to inspect larger areas of the mine wall from a single setting of the machine. 3. A third rig, consisting essentially of a platform mounted on a tele-scoping tower, designed and built to elevate men 65 feet above the mine floor. Versatility of this machine permits men to work from the platform at heights of 5 to 65 feet. In the operating position, the unit requires a minimum clearance of 25 feet. In the nonoperating position the tower of the machine folds to an over-all height of 15 feet 10 inches to permit travel through haulageways. 4. An industrial gun, lightweight scaling bars, and mechanical scalers, which have been tried for removing loose rock from the mine walls with varying degrees of success.

Vanadium is subject to only light corrosion in phosphoric acid at temperatures up to 60° C. and has a moderate corrosion rate in this acid at 100° C. It is relatively corrosion resistant in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids up to 60° C, but corrodes rapidly at 100° C. It corrodes rapidly in dilute nitric acid at 35° C. Vanadium is almost inert in 10-percent solutions of formic, acetic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids; in 9-percent oxalic acid it corrodes slowly up to 60° C. and rapidly at 100° C. Vanadium is resistant to corrosion in substitute ocean water, tapwater, and in 3-percent sodium chloride and 10-percent sodium hydroxide solutions. It is readily attacked, however, by 20-percent ferric chloride, 20-percent cupric chloride and 5-percent mercuric chloride solutions. Vanadium is protected by contact with magnesium, aluminum, and steel SAE 4130 in substitute ocean water, by magnesium and aluminum in 3-percent sodium chloride solution, and by magnesium in tapwater. Vanadium protects copper in substitute ocean water. When vanadium and stainless steel are coupled in sulfuric acid solutions, both metals are usually unaffected by contact, whereas the corrosion rate of titanium in sulfuric acid is greatly reduced by contact with vanadium.

"The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids are compounds which can be isolated from plants and which exhibit a broad range of pharmacological activities. Perhaps the best known alkaloid of this group is tetrandrine (TT), a compound isolated from the root of a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Stephania tetrandra. It has been tested for its effects on the cardiovascular system, tumors, and the lungs. For example, tetrandrine has been shown to act as a calcium entry blocker in cardiac sarcolemmal vesicles (King et a/., 1988) and has been used in China as a treatment for angina and hypertension. Its possible effects as a tumor-inhibitory substance have also been investigated (Kupchan and Atland, 1973). In addition, there are several lines of evidence to suggest that it is a possible therapeutic agent for the treatment of silicosis. Yu et a/. (1983) have shown that TT inhibits the development of experimental silicosis in rats when it is administered orally after intratracheal instillation of quartz. Other studies have shown that the alkaloid inhibits the synthesis of collagen by fibroblasts and the formation of silicotic nodules in rats exposed to silica (Huang et al., 1981; Liu et al., 1983). In fact, tetrandrine has been used clinically in China as an antifibrotic agent and has been shown to improve both the appearance of chest radiographs and the measurements of diffusing capacity in patients with silicosis (Li et al., 1981).Since tetrandrine may have a potential use as a therapeutic agent for fibrotic lung diseases, its effects on various pulmonary cells and tissues should be studied. Alveolar type II cells are located in the alveolar regions of the lungs and are important because they are responsible for the synthesis and secretion of pulmonary surfactant (Dobbs et al., 1982; King, 1984), regeneration of the alveolar epithelium after lung injury (Kauffman et al., 1974), and metabolism of foreign compounds (Bend et al., 1985). Furthermore, in silicosis, for which TT has been suggested as a treatment, there are increased amounts of pulmonary surfactant produced (Dethloff et al., 1986a,b) as a result of increased rates of surfactant synthesis by type II cells (Dethloff et a/., 1989; Miller et al., 1988). Because type II cells play a critical role in maintaining normal lung function and because type II cells are affected in silicosis, for which 'TT has been used as a treatment, we studied the effects of tetrandrine on energy metabolism in these cells in vitro. Energy metabolism was chosen because it is a basic cellular function which is neces-sary for other cellular processes to occur. Since type II cells depend on mitochondrial metabolism for energy production (Fisher et al., 1980), we examined the effects of tetrandrine on cellular and mitochondrial ATP production and oxygen consumption. Additional experiments were performed in an effort to determine if intracellular calcium levels may be involved in the TT-induced effects. A preliminary report of those results has appeared previously (Ma et al., 1991)."

The Table Mountain copper deposit is in an isolated portion of north-eastern Churchill County, Nev. Although copper-bearing outcrops have been known to exist in the area since 1909, no copper ore has been mined. Development of the property has been hampered by poor roads and rugged topography. Until 1941, the last 4 or 5 miles to the property had to be traveled either by foot or pack animal. As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a project was started at the Table Mountain deposit. The Bureau began its field work on July 29, 1947, and completed it on October 18, 1948. Thirteen holes aggregating 2,711 linear feet, were drilled; samples were analyzed - 509 from cores and 143 from sludges. This report contains a brief history of the district and a description of the geology, deposits, and drilling done by the Bureau.

The heats of formation of seven substances were determined by solution calorimetry. At 298.15° K, the heat of formation of lithium sulfate from lithium, rhombic sulfur, and oxygen was -343.1 ± 0.7 kcal/mole, and the heat of formation of lithium sulfate monohydrate from lithium, rhombic sulfur, oxy-gen, and hydrogen was -414.3 ± 0.7 kcal/mo1e. For the silicates, the heats of formation at 298.15° K from the elements were kaliophilite, -503.8 ± 0.5 kcal/mole; leucite, -721.6 ± 0,8 kcal/mole; eucryptite, -505,2 ± 0.6 kcal/mole; alpha-spodumene, -727.9 ± 0.9 kcal/mole; and beta-spodumene, -721.1 ± 0.9 kcal/mole. The corresponding heats of formation at 298.15° K from the constituent oxides were kaliophilite, -42.7 ± 1.1 kca1/mole; leucite, -42.8 ± 1.1 kcal/mole; eucryptite, -16.1 ± 0.7 kcal/mole; alpha-spodumene, -21.0 ± 0.7 kcal/mo1e; and beta-spodumene, -14.3 ± 0.7 kcal/mo1e.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing quarrying methods and costs at stone quarries throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scrope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of J. R. Thoenen, mining engineer, United States Bureau of Mines, in the preparation of this paper. Acknowledgment is also made to E. R. The Precious Metals Section is concerned primarily with ore-testing problems associated with precious metals and with the analysis and concentration of a large number of the strategic-mineral samples that have been included in the research program of the Bureau of Mines. During the fiscal year 1938-39, 30 projects were completed. The requests for this service are based upon the desire of the sponsor to obtain the best or most satisfactory method for maximum recovery of the minerals. In many instances it is a question of improving present milling practice, with due regard to utilization of present equipment. In others, the probable tonnage available maybe the deciding factor in the choice of a particular recovery method. Under all circumstances the results of tests axe prepared with the thought of aiding a competent metallurgist, familiar with local conditions, to formulate a practical flow sheet or to assist the mill operator to correct known losses. A microscopic examination for identification of the mineral constituents and their association in each ore is always a big help, in planning the tests and may indicate the reason for former troubles or assist with best procedure.

The value of mica depends chiefly upon the size of the flat sheets into which it can be split and also upon whether it is clear or stained. Muscovite (white mica) and philogopite (amber mica) are the micas of commerce. Biotite (black mica) and other varieties are virtually unsalable. Vermiculite, an altered mica having the extraordinary property of expanding greatly when heated, preferably should not be classed commercially as mica. Mica is marketed as (1) cut or uncut block, (2) sheet, (3) splittings, and (4) wet or dry ground mica. In the United States, mica that will not yield flat films over about 1-1/2 inches square, or that is ruled, rumpled, or flawed in any way, can be sold only as scrap, its sole use being for making ground mica. Only sizes that will yield rectangles 1-1/2 by 2 inches or larger can be classed as sheet quality; slightly smaller sizes may be classed as punch, and under certain circumstances still smaller sizes, down to about 1 inch square, may be used for splittings, which are mostly a thousandth of an inch thick or even thinner. Splittings, however, are produced in large quantities only in British India, where labor costs very little. Even there the work is done mostly by children, who not only work cheaper but have a delicacy of touch that enables them to do the splitting faster and better. No mechanical process yet devised will permit ordinary splittings to be made economically in the United States.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the changes that occur in decomposition products when coal is carbonized in a fluidized bed with steam as the fluidizing medium and the vapors are subsequently cracked without condensation in a fluidized bed of high-temperature coke. The coal used was from the High Splint bed, High Splint mine, Harlan County, Ky. Since this coal is agglomerating, it was blended with char. The integrated unit used in this investigation consisted of a 3-inch-diameter fluidized coal carbonizer, a 3.5-inch-diameter cracker containing a bed of high-temperature coke fluidized by the tar vapors and steam from the carbonizer, and gas-cleaning and product-recovery systems. The carbonizer was operated at 485° C and the cracker at 600°, 700°, and 800° C. The process variables investigated were temperature, residence time, and concentration (pound of tar vapors per pound of steam to the cracker) of tar vapors in the cracker. The total tar yields decreased as the temperature of the cracker increased, and at a constant cracker temperature of 600° C the yield of paraffins, acids, aromatics, and olefins in the distillate increased directly with the tar vapor concentration in the cracker. At 700° and 800° C only the acids and aromatics increased with increased concentration. Bases remained essentially constant regardless of the temperature and concentration. Similar results were obtained when the tar from the carbonizer was condensed prior to feeding to the cracker.

The grinding characteristics of lignite in a ball mill were investigated. The variables studied were initial lignite moisture content, degree of in-the-mill drying, and lignite source. The mill tested was a pilot-p1ant-size conical ball mill which had a maximum output of from 80 to 180 lb/hr pulverized product depending on the lignite and test conditions. The capacity of the test mill ranged from 82 to 103 lb/hr depending upon mine source, in pulverization of as-mined lignite with minimum drying, The capabilities of the ball mill could not be correlated to Hardgrove index of the individual lignites or other observed physical properties. Predrying lignite from its 35 to 40 percent raw moisture content to about 10 percent moisture before grinding improved the mill capacity 87 percent, compared to an increase in capacity of 74 percent with in-the-mi11 drying to the same product moisture.

"INTRODUCTION Dark soils are commonly believed to be better for agricultural purposes than light-color soils. Much of this feeling may be purely psychological, as many persons have unconsciously acquired the habit of associating richness of soil with color light soils, however, may be just as rich in humus and plant foods as the best of the dark soils. A dis-cussion of the manifold attributes that play an important role in soil technology is beyond the scope of this paper, but the color factor will be considered, as it has a particular bearing on some field experiments using coal-mine waste as a darkening medium.It has been established that dark soils absorb more of the sun's radiation, consequently are maintained at a higher temperature than light soils. This physical principle is applied in our daily lives in the choice of clothing. White clotnes in summer are cooler than dark ones. Conversely, dark clothes in winter are warmer than light-color clothing. A decided advantage of dark soils over light soils is the higher average temperature of the former, resulting in an earlier maturing crop. This advance of the maturing season may range from a few days to a month, depending on such factors as climate, crop, and degree of color of the soil. It has been reported that in parts of Russia where the growing season is short, perhaps comparable to that in Pennsylvania and. New York, cotton has been grown successfully on soils originally of light color, but darkened with coal, dusts. The growth of cotton is, accordingly, speeded up a full month. 3/"

"SUMMARYThis report on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines presents compilations of inspection test data furnished on their products by manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline, and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on samples of these gasolines. Data and physical samples for the survey were submitted by 15 manufacturers on 18 grade 80, 21 grade 91/98, 22 grade 100/130, end 10 grade 115/145 aviation fuels.The inspection test data supplied by the participating manufacturers consist of octane and performance numbers, tetraethyllead content, dye color, and other characteristics usually listed in aviation gasoline specifications, such as AN-F-48a or ASTM Designation D910-47T. These data are tabulated and averaged by grades in tables 1 through 4 and, as reported, meet the AN-F-48a and similar specifications with a few exceptions. Two grade 80 gasolines show a lean-mixture octane rating slightly below 80.0, and 91/98 grade fuel shows a lean-mixture rating of 90.9 and a rich-mixture rating of 97.5, two 100/130 grade gasolines have a rich-mixture performance number slightly below 130.0, and one 115/145 grade gasoline shows a rich-mixture performance number of 144.5. However, octane and performance number averages are above the mini¬mum requirements for each grade. Tetraethyllead content in the 91/98 and 100/ 130 grades generally is above the maximum outlined in these specifications, whereas dye color for each of the four grades, with the exception of two gasolines in grades 80 and 100/130, is that designated for the particular grade. Distillation requirements, with a few exceptions at individual points, are met by gasolines of all grades. Reid-vapor-pressure, copper-dish-residue, heat-of-combustion or aniline-gravity-constant, freezing-point, and copper-strip-corrosion requirements are met by all gasolines so far as reported. No data for some of these tests wore submitted on a few of the gasolines. One gasoline, grade 115/145, shows a sulfur content greater than the specified maximum."

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, devised a flotation technique for upgrading chromite in chromium ores and gravity concentrates. The technique consisted of cationic flotation of chromite from a slime-free pulp acidified to pH 2.5 or lower using H2S04 modifier. Flotation results showed that ore containing serpentine as the primary gangue mineral was more amenable to concentration by this technique than ore containing the readily floatable olivine as the primary gangue mineral. Rougher flotation of a chromite ore containing abundant serpertine increased the grade form 19 to 41 percent Cra03 at a chromite recovery of 89.6 percent. Rougher flotation of ore containing abundant olivine upgraded the chromite from 23.4 to 29.6 percent Cr203 at a recovery of 89.4 percent. The technique was also applied to chromite gravity concentrates to further upgrade chromite and to reject silicates. Flotation of a gravity concentrate containing 40.9 percent Cr203 and 4.4 percent SiO2 recovered 90 percent of the chromite in cleaner products containing 44.9 percent Cr203 and 0.63 percent Si02. The combined recovery by gravity and flotation was 87 percent. An economic evaluation of this technique will be undertaken to deter-mine its feasibility for commercial use.
