This publication summarizes the research (in-house and contract projects) programmed by the Bureau of Mines for fiscal year 1984 (October 1, 1983-September 30, 1984) under its Health and Safety Technology Program. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced advance toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the systems technology required to create a more healthful and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workers.

An economic analysis of underground gasification of coal, based on experimental results obtained by the Bureau of Mines, indicates that a gas suitable for use in a power plant might be produced for approximately $.62 to $.77 per million British thermal units. This estimate does not include cost of land purchase. The gasification experiments were conducted in a 3-ft. seam of high volatile A bituminous coal. The major factors which can influence a change in operating costs are height of overburden, power costs, thermal efficiency, and the gasification air inlet pressure. "During the year which has passed since the last progress report on reduction of zinc by natural gas,3 the laboratory experiments on this investigation have been completed. In this concluding report, the whole subject will be reviewed and additional data presented.Chemical ReactionsIn a thermodynamic study of zinc smelting, Maier 4 discussed the use of methane for reducing zinc oxide, and predicted equilibria at various temperatures for the sore important reactions. The study has been extended to include the following list.Maier predicted that 870°C. would be the critical temperature above which reaction (1) would take precedence over reaction (2) and that reaction (1) at equilibria would be substantially complete at or above 927°C. A subsequent papers described experimental verification of these predictions and gave data on reaction rates under various conditions.It methane is passed through a heated bed of zinc oxide at a low enough rate reactions (1), (3), and (4) reach an equilibrium which can be expressed by reaction (10). The equilibrium concentrations for the products of this reaction in the temperature range 900° to 1100°C. were calculated by applying the thermodynamic constants to the stoichiometric relations. 6 The results of these calculations are listed in table 1 and shown graphically in figures 1, A and B. These data have major importance, and experimental work has shown that they are subtantially correct."

New applications and concepts of solvent extraction as a unit operation in extractive metallurgy have been developed in the last decade. Wider use is being made of established solvent extraction techniques in processing spent nuclear fuel elements and in winning columbium-tantalum, hafnium-zirconium, thorium, tungsten, uranium, and vanadium. Commercial application has been extended to recovery of beryllium, boron, bromine, copper, molybdenum, phosphorus, rare-earth metals, and rhenium. Systems in use and proposed typically extract metals or salts as anion, cation, or neutral species from aqueous media by reaction with a recycleable organic reagent.

The Alma, Degraff and other mines controlled by the Mon-Ark Mining Co. comprise one of the more important groups of zinc-lead mines in Christian County, Mo. The mines were first operated in .1857 and produced more than 5 million pounds of lead from rich, shallow ore deposits. Recent exploration and development led to the discovery of zinc sulfide ore at a depth of 165 to 214 feet in the northern part of the Alma mine. After examination of these mines in September 1942 by Bureau of Mines engineers, investigation of the extension -of the Alma mine and of the depth of mineralization at the other mines appeared justified in order to encourage the production of additional zinc and lead for war purposes. Twenty-nine churn-drill holes totaling 6.463 feet of bore were completed by the. Bureau from September 1943 to January 1944.

The presence of pyrite (FeS2) in coal can cause or contribute to several problems for the coal mining industry. These problems, which include spontaneous combustion, roof falls, floor heave, and accidental explosions in coal surface mining when ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) explosives are used, result from pyrite oxidation. Pyrite oxidizes exothermically in the presence of air and moisture to form a large variety of products, including hydrated ferrous and ferric sulfates, and sulfuric acid. Some of the products are reactive chemicals and strong oxidants. The volume of many of these oxidation products exceeds the original volume of the pyrite; as a result, the adjacent coal disintegrates and its surface increases, rendering it more susceptible to oxidation. The heat from pyrite oxidation raises the temperature of the adjacent coal, accelerating the oxidation and self-heating rates of the coal. These combined chemical, physical, and thermal effects are the cause of the aforementioned problems. When ANFO is used in surface coal mines and contacts ferrous sulfate, a highly exothermic reaction ensiles. Additional hazards are fires or explosions caused by the frictional ignition of methane when the pyrite in the coal is struck by a cutting bit during mining.

This report deals with the factors which should be considered in evaluating a placer deposit and selecting a dredging system for mineral recovery. Overall dredging feasibility and the design of dredging systems are reviewed. Excavation methods, each with its advantages and disadvantages, are compared. Direct operating costs, both original and updated, of gold dredges with bucket capacities of 6 to 18 cubic feet are included. Costs vary with digging depth, changes in environmental conditions, and physical characteristics of the placer, all of which affect excavation rate and recovery. The costs, updated with appropriate indexes, should be used only as guidelines to evaluate potential dredging projects with similar characteristics. The relation of direct dredging costs to annual production is graphically illustrated by a family of curved envelopes that span dredge sizes from 2-112 to 18 cubic feet. A curve fitted to the data expresses the relation of direct costs to annual production for 151 dredge-years.

[The coarse-grained granitic pegmatities of the United States have long been a source of many important industrial minerals, because of this, they have been studied intensively by geologists, mining engineers, end metallurgists. These studies have amassed a rather astounding array of published and unpublished information. Correlation of geological studies between individual pegmatites, as well as between major districts, has brought fort come semblance of order to the knowledge of the structure and mineralogical composition of those highly complex and irregular deposits, making it possible to classify certain pegmatites and pegmatitic zones into several grouts of associated minerals, based upon the presence or absence of the minor minerals of beryllium and lithium. This classification or trouping of minerals, with the methods that have been developed for recovering certain of these minerals, possible a systematic approach to the winning of many of the industrially important minerals from pegmatite rock by u single integrated process.]

A hvab coal was carbonized in a closed system at 600 ° C and 40 to 1 , 200 psig to produce a high- Btu gas and char . By retaining the volatiles within the system, it was possible to virtually eliminate production of tars and oils . Depending on pressure and residence time , yields of combustible gases (72 to 92 percent methane ) amounted to 4,000 to 6,000 cubic feet per ton of maf coal and gross heating values of these gases varied from 830 to 960 Btu per cubic foot . Yields of char (maf ) were about 1,600 pounds per ton of maf coal . Increased residence time favored production of gases but reduced their heating values , whereas increase in pressure resulted in somewhat higher heating values and lower production . Similar effects were observed from the carbonization of a low- temperature tar . If these results could be translated to an economical carbonization process for producing high- Btu gas from coal , the demand for coal could be expanded by 40 to 50 million tons per year . Because of large yields of char , a process of this type would obviously have to be integrated with coal - fired power plants . Fortunately , operations could be conducted at essentially atmospheric pressure as product gas under this condition can be obtained in satisfactory yields and with good quality .

A linear array of shot and gage holes 30 feet deep in a granite outcrop was used to compare the size and shape of radial strain pulses produced in the rock when short cylindrical charges of cast composition B were detonated axially or at one end. The axially detonated charges produced radial strain pulses that had shorter rise times and larger peak strain than the strain pulses produced by end detonated charges.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch and small-scale continuous selective flotation tests of barite-fluorspar ores from two deposits near Marion, Ky., to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial grade fluorspar and barite concentrates. The lignin sulfonate-sodium fluoride method of floating the fluorspar successfully produced acid-grade fluorspar concentrates. Flotation of the barite from the fluorspar tailing using petroleum sulfonate collector yielded concentrates suitable for use in compounding oil-well drilling mud. The fluorspar and barite recoveries were about 82 and 85 percent, respectively.

It deals with the procedures for obtaining a recommendation for classification of an explosive compound, mixture, or device through the Bureau of Mines. Completion of the procedures detailed in this guide is necessary to obtain a final classification of an explosive compound, mixture, or device and assignment of an "EX" number by DOT, which will allow the producer to offer the explosive for shipment within the United States. This guide also gives procedures for obtaining United Nations (U.N.) classification for shipping outside the United States.

In support of research on forming ceramics from mining and processing wastes, the Bureau of Mines tested various commercial refractories to evaluate their resistance to melts of these wastes. Sixteen refractories of various types were exposed in slag erosion tests to two siliceous waste melts with Si02/CaO ratios of 4.0 and 2.2, The extent and nature of slag attack were then determined for each refractory. The nature of slag attack was investigated through scanning electron micrographs and microprobe elemental distributions. The refractories that performed best in resisting attack by the melts were high-alumina types, and of the refractories tested, the most resistant was a 90-pct-Al203, 10-pct-Cr203 refractory.

This report presents results of a cooperative research project between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and BethEnergy Mines, Inc. Four coreholes (two before mining and two after mining) were drilled at a longwall mine operating in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed to obtain coal and rock samples from over-lying strata to determine their gas content at various times in the mining cycle. The results of those tests indicate that 91 pct of the gas removed from the overlying strata came from coalbeds. Material balance calculations were made to compare the volume of gas produced both from gob gas vent holes drilled on the panel and gas removed by the mine's ventilation system with the volume of gas removed from strata directly overlying the panel to a height of 275 ft. This analysis indicates that only 40 pct of the total gas produced from the panel actually came from the strata directly overlying the panel. The remaining volume of gas production probably migrated to the longwall gob from overlying, and perhaps underlying, strata immediately adjacent to the panel and perhaps from greater distances downdip because of the establishment of a long-term pressure gradient in the study area.

Aeration in water slurries and controlled drying of manganous hydroxide produced from dithionate leaching of Artillery Peak manganese ores from Arizona were investigated by the Bureau of Mines at its Electrometallurgical Experiment Station, Boulder City, Nev., to determine whether a simple process could be developed for converting this product into a battery-grade manganese dioxide. The properties of manganese dioxide prepared by the thermal decomposition of manganous nitrate were investigated also. Manganese dioxide suitable for use in batteries was not obtained from the dithionate leach product, but some of the factors controlling its oxidation were isolated. Aging of manganous hydroxide was of major importance in retarding its oxidation by aeration. Sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate promoted oxidation by drying. Optimum quantities were about 0.85 mol of sodium hydroxide and 0.2 mol of sodium silicate per mol of manganese, and drying temperatures of 200° C. produced yields of manganese dioxide up to 90 percent of the manganese present. Higher temperatures and concentrations of reagents carried oxidation of manganese beyond its tetravalent state.

Uranium activity has introduced a comparatively new hazard to United States mining. In addition to the hazards common to all mines, uranium mines have a complex health problem of radiation damage. Like many new processes, radiation and nuclear energy can be made to serve man in many useful ways when properly understood and handled; but, like fire, gases, and electricity, their potential dangers must be known and respected, and appropriate precautions must be taken or death may result. Since 1950 the Public Health Service has been conducting basic investigations on exposure to radon and its daughter products and the effect of exposure upon the health of miners in uranium mines of the Western States. The Bureau of Mines assisted in several of these investigations, especially in mines on Indian lands. The studies have shown that a serious health hazard exists from radioactive exposure that might cause lung cancer if continued over a number of years. The Public Health Service report, Control of Radon and Daughters in Uranium Mines and Calculations on Biologic Effects,6/ shows that 55 percent of the uranium mines employing 64 percent of the miners had atmospheric concentrations more than five times the working level now accepted as reasonably safe for industrial exposures. Extensive control measures are necessary to reduce these concentrations to the suggested working level of less than 300 micromicrocuries of total radon daughter products per liter of air.

The Bureau of Mines investigated nitrous oxide (N20) stability when used as a solvent for organic removal from metal powder surfaces. Both supercritical and subcritical conditions were studied. This investigation was prompted by the occurrence of a violent reaction when supercritical N20 was being used to deoil a metal powder grinding waste sample that contained 20 to 25 wt pct cutting oil. Tests were conducted to determine the cause of the reaction and to define stability limits. Test data showed that the waste's oil fraction reacted violently with N20 acting as an oxidizer; the metal powder acted as a promoter to reduce the ignition temperature. Although the data were scattered, this temperature appeared to reach a minimum at a certain pressure (dependent on vessel and sample size). The minimum ignition temperature for a 0.64-g sample in a 72-cm3 vessel was 360° C at 200 psig. As the sample size increased, the ignition temperature decreased. For example, when the sample size was increased to 10 g, a reaction occurred at 240° C and 600 psig. Because of the variability of ignition temperature with pressure and sample size, safe operating conditions were not established. Overall, this research showed that extreme caution should be exercised when using N20 in an organic or organic-metal system.

"INTRODUCTION The necessity for protection against the hazards of lightning manifests itself from time to time in the mining industry by reason of loss of life, damage to electrical equipment, fires in surface structures at mines, and accidents in the handling and use of explosives. This paper is intended to assemble, correlate, and present some of the salient points embodied in the available literature on the subject and at the same time give some factual data concerning instances of such loss of life and damage to property, with special application to the mining industry.The annual loss of life and destruction of property by lightning is considerable; the former may be prevented to a limited extent, though use of common sense as to exposure is required and not always followed; the latter can be prevented to a considerable degree. The manufacturers of electrical equipment, through improved types of lightning arresters, have done much toward the protection of electrical equipment, with consequent safeguarding of life and of property. Education based on unfortunate experiences has gone far to discourage the handling of explosives and blasting accessories during thunder storms, especially in open pits and quarries, and to a much smaller extent in underground workings. The lowly lightning rod plays an important role in the protection of certain types of buildings (especially isolated buildings), stacks, monuments, and other structures.LIGHTNING PHENOMENAIn 1751, Franklin proved that, lightning was simply a visible display of electricity - an extended spark; and until a generation ago little had been added to his exposition to define the various phases of the phenomenon. "PULMONARY ALVEOLAR macrophages (PAM) protect the lungs by providing a first line of defense against inhaled foreign debris and bacteria. In this role PAM phagocytize foreign matter, secrete enzymes that augment microbial killing and digestion, and produce reactive oxygen me-tabolites (2, 3, 18, 19, 22, 26). However, in addition to this antibacterial function, PAM participate in a diversity of functions, such as tissue repair, lipoprotein metabolism, and immunoregulatory activities (11, 22).Studies have suggested the existence of a heterogeneous population of PAM with respect to immunologic function, enzyme release, phagocytosis, morphological characteristics, expression of membrane receptors, ad-herence, and superoxide (O2•) release (4-7, 10, 16, 21, 23, 28). This heterogeneity has been observed by analyz¬ing subfractions of PAM separated by cell density frac-tionation. For example, using guinea pig PAM, Dauber et al. (7) showed heterogeneity in cell density and size, morphological characteristics, and cytochemical properties, whereas Holian and co-workers (16) reported variations in migration, chemotaxis, O2• release, and pinocytosis among subfractions collected. Similarly, O'Neill et al. (21) observed functional heterogeneity in rat PAM with regard to phagocytosis, O2 • release, and lysosomal enzyme activity.Several investigations have reported a correlation between PAM activity and cell volume. Most studies have shown that O2 release from PAM increased with decreasing cell size (15, 21, 25), although Bielefeldt Ohmann and Babiuk (4) reported a decreasing trend. However, Gallin (13) has suggested that significant variability may even exist within density-defined or cell-volume subfractions that could lead to misinterpretation of results concerning PAM heterogeneity.A better understanding of the heterogeneity in O2 production may be obtained by using single cell meas-urements to evaluate whether functionally distinct sub-populations actually do exist. As such, the present study was designed to examine heterogeneity in O2 • release from single PAM using a recently developed electrooptical technique (8). The initial oxygen metabolite, O2•, produced by NADPH oxidase at the surface of the plasma membrane, was measured by quantifying the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT I to a diformazan precipitate. Measurements were made from video recordings of individual cells stimulated by their adherence to the bottom of a culture dish. The cell volume and degree of spreading also were determined directly from the same video recordings, and the data were correlated with the initial rate and maximum amount of diformazan produced by the same cell."
