The objective of this project was to improve a driver's field of view for large trucks used in the mining industry. Rearward viewing was enhanced by improving the rear-view mirror designs. Rear vision was accomplished using a closed circuit television system. Views ahead,, to the right, and downward were obtained with a blind area viewer (BAV). The BAV is a unique combination of fresnel lenses housed in a shielded, environmentally protected enclosure that produces an image of the area in front of and downward 70° and to either side of the BAV 300. The improved visibility devices were evaluated by long-term, in-mine testing. The right Bide mirror (RSM) and BAV provide the greatest improvements for the least cost and are commercially available. Application of the RSM and BAV should achieve a reduction in accident potential and greater vehicle productivity by enlarging and improving the equipment operator's visibility and making priviously blind areas and hazardous situations detectable.

"INTRODUCTION Electrolytic manganese is produced by electrolysis of a solution of manganese sulfate and ammonium sulfate in a diaphragm-type cell, metallic manganoese being deposited on the cathodes and sulfuric acid produced at the anodes. The spent electrolyte is used to leach fresh ore that has previously been subjected to a reducing roast; the resulting leach liquor is purified and returned to the cell.The leach liquor produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant 3/ at Boulder City, Nev., contains 135 to 140 grams of ammonium sulfate and 32 to 36 grams of manganese (as sulfate) per liter, and has a pH of about 2.5. After neutralization to a pH of 6.4 to 6.6 with ammonia and thickening, 0.10 to 0.15 gram of hydrogen sulfide per liter is added to the liquor to precipitate the heavy metals, and after 15 to 30 minutes the precipitate is filtered off. Residual sulfides and colloidal material are removed by ferric hydroxide formed by adding a small amount of ferrous sulfate to the solution at a pH of 6.5 to 7.0 and passing air through it. The solution is then filtered and clarified as a precoat filter. Finally, 0.1 gram of sulfur dioxide per liter is added, and the solution is electrolyzed in an anode-in-diaphragm cell. The spent electrolyte coming from the cell contains approximately 10 grams manganese, 135 grams ammonium sulfate, and 45 grams sulfuric acid per liter."

COAL, salt, lapis lazuli, and construction materials such as lime, gypsum, slate and stone were the only mineral commodities produced in Afghanistan during 1963. Beryl has been produced sporadically. Small deposits of chromite and lead-zinc are known but remained unexploited because there were no domestic markets for the two commodities and transportation costs from Afghanistan to world markets were too high. Oil fields of sufficient magnitude to justify exploitation have not been discovered, but known natural gas reserves are substantial and have potential significance. There is evidence of large high-grade iron ore resources, but these are in an unfavorable location. The contribution of the mineral industry to the economy was small, although precise figures are not available. The reported value of mineral production in 1963 (excluding barite) was 181.6 million afghanis (about US$4 million). Employment in the industry, including cement plants and quarries, was estimated to be no more than about 2,000.

This report outlines the experimental procedures for using a Burnett apparatus to obtain compressibility coefficients for multiphase, multicomponent fluid mixtures. The conventional Burnett method is described briefly whereby multiphase compressibility data can be obtained by first determining the compressibility factor, Z, as an isothermal function of pressure alone. Then starting at conditions of temperature and pressure where Z is known, the fluid is cooled at constant volume to some lower temperature at which the resulting pressure is measured, and a corresponding value of Z is obtained from a fundamental relationship between compressibility factors, pressures, and temperatures at constant volume. The isochoric treatment of the fluid, extended to still lower temperatures and along other isochors, eventually results in compressibility determinations for the whole two-phase system thus covered experimentally.

A two-constant equation is presented for helium from 30° = T = 1,473° K. This equation is developed by modifying a generalized equation of state originally presented by Redlich and Kwong (20).3 The modification consists of setting B = 0.06372 Tc/PeT. This modified equation represents the compressibility factors of each of 80 isotherms tested in this temperature range to less than 1 percent average deviation.

The major fire and fire injury findings for all metal/nonmetal mining categories for 1990-2001 are shown in tables 64-65. Table 66, partly illustrated in figure 22, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays for all metal/nonmetal mining categories by time period. For all metal/nonmetal operations (including stone and sand and gravel), a total of 518 fires occurred during 1990-2001; 296 of those fires caused 308 injuries and 4 fatalities (Ewhr = 4,012 x 106 hr, In = 0.015, LWD = 36,204). Thirty fires and 26 injuries involved contractors. The greatest number of fires and fire injuries occurred at surface operations; the highest risk rate values were also calculated for surface operations. The number of fires increased during the first four 2-year time periods (1990-1991, 1992-1993, 1994-1995, and 1996-1997), then decreased during the last two periods (1998-1999 and 2000-2001). The number of injuries showed a decrease throughout the periods, accompanied by an increase in employees' working hours. Twenty-five firefighting interventions by mine rescue teams in underground mines and at least 30 interventions at surface operations were required to combat these fires. However, 45 fires destroyed or heavily damaged facilities and equipment (including 19 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. Ninety-seven fires were detected late, and 30 fires were undetected. The ignition sources that caused the greatest number of fires were flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame (169 fires or 33% with 137 injuries), hydraulic fluid/fuel sprayed onto equipment hot surfaces (89 fires or 17% with 46 injuries and 3 fatalities), heat source/explosion and flammable liquids/ gas/refueling fuel on hot surfaces (98 fires or 19% with 73 injuries), electrical short/arcing (51 fires or 10% with 16 injuries), and spontaneous combustion/hot material (46 fires or 9% with 17 injuries). The flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame source caused fires usually involving welders' clothing or oxyfuel/grease and other materials (including chute and dust collector liners, flammable liquids, belt material, crusher, hopper and shaker deck materials, washer plants, equipment mechanical components, stampler breaker, hydraulic fluid, rubber tires and hoses, gear boxes, bin feeder, dump rope cables, screen liner and screen panel, kiln and shaft material, pipelines, liquor pumps, wood pallets, electrical junction boxes, handrails, grease, refuse, shop and wood). The spontaneous combustion/hot material and electrical fires were usually detected late due to lack of combustion gas/smoke detection systems. The temperature dependency of the low-density viscosity coefficients, ?°T, of helium and of nitrogen, 100° to 1,000° K, is correlated with empirical equations, and the temperature and composition dependencies of the low-density viscosity coefficients, ?°T, of helium-nitrogen mixtures are correlated with the Chapman-Enskog expressions by using the Lennard-Jones (6:12) potential function. The residual viscosity, ?T,P - ?°T (the difference between the viscosity of a compressed gas and the dilute gas at a given temperature), was found to be a function of the thermal pressure coefficient, (?P/?T)V, and two parameters, a and 1, which are characteristic of gas composition. The equation ?T, P = ?°T + a [(?P/?T)V]ß represented 1,340 higher pressure experimental viscosity values with a mean absolute deviation of 0.86 percent, and this equation was used to compute viscosities of the gaseous helium-nitrogen system for a range of temperatures and pressures including those encountered in Bureau of Mines helium purification processes and in a crude-helium conservation gas reservoir. Tabular viscosities for helium, nitrogen, and 13 helium-nitrogen mixtures are presented for 110 temperatures, 133° to 740' K, and 49 pressures in the range 1 to 240 atmospheres. The accuracy of the tabulated viscosities varies because correlation parameters were obtained from experimental data of unequal reliability. It is estimated that uncertainties in the computed viscosity values are ±5 percent for the region 325° to 740° K, ±2 percent for the region 183° to 325° K, and ±5 percent for temperatures below 183° K. The latter uncertainty may rise to y10 percent as critical conditions are approached.

"IntroductionMany bituminous coal-mining companies have inaugurated extensive safety Programs, but the failure to have approved or permissible equipment or safe practice in only one part of a mine has resulted in disaster. The necessity of using only equipment bearing the U. S. Bureau of Mines approval plate is emphasized by the fact that many accidents are the direct result of carelessness on the part of trusted employees using non-permissible equipment. A concrete example is found in the case of an explosion on October 26, 1926, in a mine in the Pittsburgh district, Pennsylvania.Story of the ExplosionAt about 10 o'clock on the night of the explosion an examination was made in No 2 butt left and parallel off 7o. 14 north, and was found to be clear of dangerous accumulations of gas. (See figure). Several hours later a crew of two men brought a self-propelling rock-dusting machine within 50 feet of the face of Po. 2 butt parallel before they examined for gas. The machine operator found an accumulation of explosive gas about 18 inches from the roof. He began to wave his arms thoroughly mixing the gas and air. Undoubtedly a highly explosive mixture was created, and as the men attempted to run the machine back to fresh air an explosion occurred.The helper dropped to the floor and was burned about the face and wrists. The machine operator ran down the entry and was more severely burned about the face, neck, and arms. He later developed pneumonia and died. Both men reached the door in the chute between No. 14 and No. 15 north. A pumper, who had felt the rush of air, found the men and helped them to walk outside."

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1936 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3324, under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to July 31, 1,936." This list included 170 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1937 placed 35 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Ten permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present list contains 196 brand names, one explosive having been placed on the list subsequent to June 30, 1937. A guide to the development and utilization of an interactive mine-power-system fault program (Z-bus by algorithm) is presented. Theoretical foundations, as well as implementation considerations are discussed with respect to the mine-power system. Alternative Kron reduction techniques are presented along with a triangular-storage method for storage conservation. Program capabilities include the analysis of balanced and unbalanced (line-to-line, line-to-ground, and line-to-line-to-ground) fault situations using symmetrical component theory. To account for phase shifting in delta-wye transformers and zero-sequence network constructions, transformer and load configurations are specified by the user. The positive-and zero-sequence connections needed for network conformity are automatically constructed with the required impedances.

"The wetting behavior of coal has been determined in the presence of nonyl and octyl series of nonionic surfactants containing polyethoxy groups of different sizes. The wetting behavior was determined by a modified Walker technique and contact angle measurements. The results show that the wetting rate of coal varies with coal rank, structure of the hydrocarbon chain and number of ethoxy groups in the hydrophilic group of the surfactant. A close relationship has been observed between the wetting rates and the short-time advancing contact angles.INTRODUCTIONNonionic surfactants are used in many applications to improve wettability of solids. They can be used as dispersing agents [ 1 ] or dust suppressants [ 2-5] and to control the flotation, flocculation, filtration and, flowability of particulates. This study was undertaken to study the effect of a series of nonionic surfactants on the wetting behavior of coal. Two series of surfactants, namely, ethoxylated nonyl and octyl phenols were used. The nonyl phenol series con tains a linear hydrocarbon chain containing nine carbon atoms (CH3 ( CH2 )8-C6H4- ( OC2H4 ) n, where n is the number of ethoxy groups) . The octyl phenol series contains a branched hydrocarbon chain containing eight' carbon atoms ( ( CH3 ) 3CCH2C ( CH3) 2-C6H4- ( OC2H4 ) n ).Initial wetting rates — modified Walker techniqueWalker et al. [ 6 ] developed a sink test to determine the wettability of coal particles. In this technique, coal particles are dropped individually onto the surface of surfactant solutions of different concentrations, and the most dilute concentration in which coal would sink ""instantaneously"" is determine& This technique is a variation of a procedure initially developed by Draves and Clarkson [ 7 ] to determine the effect of surfactants on wettability of cotton fibers."

The specific objective of this three year study is to investigate the means of reestablishing non-polluted hydrologic systems in areas where surface mining directly impacts shallow ground-water resources. The research area chosen for the study is located near Colstrip, Montana it a new mine site where chemical analysis of core samples from the overburden suggested that excessive concentrations of several elements would he encountered during the mining process. This report discusses local vegetation; soils; and regional geology, and hydrology. Stratigraphic cross sections and regression analyses were used to study the litho-chemical relationships in the overburden. Cross sections indicated Inimical material may be related to both rock tune and position within the overburden profile. In overburden zoness where clay content was high, there was a greater probability that Pb, Cu, Ni, and Mn concentrations would also be higher than average; similarly, the likelihood of overburden exceeding a suspect level became less as the sand content increased. Highest value, of conductance were usually found within a few meters of the surface. High concentrations of clay, nickel, and zinc were frequently found directly above and below the Rosebud coal. Regression analysis indicated overburden SAR was predictable with only a Na analysis. A strong relationship also existed in the overburden between conductance, Ca, and Mg.

This report is one of a series of Bureau of Mines Information Circulars dealing with mining methods and costs throughout the United States. It describes drifting, crosscutting, and raising operations at several mines in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, Shoshone County, Idaho. Ore bodies in the Coeur d'Alene district are generally in steeply dipping tabular ore zones, are irregular in shape, erratic in occurrence, and have been extensively mined along the strike and down dip. Because of the extended attitude of the deposits a great deal of development work is required. Drifting, crosscutting, and raising methods are described in this report. Shaft sinking is the subject of another report in the same series.

Iron ores associated with the Oriskany formation extend from the West Virginia border to the southwestern corner of Virginia. The deposits have been mined at many places, and the district is credited with the production of approximately 13,000,000 tons of ore to 1925, when mining operations ceased (fig. 1). The Oriskany iron-ore deposits occur in the Alleghany Mountains throughout their extent in the State. The name Oriskany was originally given to the limonite ore that was supposed to occur in the Oriskany sand-stone. At present, the name applies to all iron-ore deposits occurring in the lower part of the Devonian shale, Oriskany sandstone, and Helderberg limestone. The principal ore-bearing minerals are goethite and limonite. This report deals principally with the occurrences in Allegheny, Bath, Botetourt, and Craig Counties, Va. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic-minerals program, began a project to develop the reserves of the area in November 1943; and continued until December 1944. Work started near Oriskany and extended northeast for nearly three-fourths of the area of the more important deposits. During the program 163 holes were drilled, totaling 11,651 feet; 256 feet of prospect tunnels were driven; 1,346 samples were collected; beneficiation tests were performed; and bulldozer trails and trenches wore excavated. The work served to delimit and appreciably extend the reserves of several areas. Analyses of channel samples are -given in appendix A, and diamond-drill and churn-drill hole logs and sample analyses are given in appendixes B and C, respectively.

"In cooperation with The Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., a survey was conducted in 1929 and 1930 by the United States Bureau of Mines to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. The territory served approximates 650 square miles and includes 46 cities and towns. The transmission and distribution systems are on overhead construction and underground wires and cables run in underground conduits and manholes. There are 17,000 manholes on the system, and also an area in Boston proper served by the Edison tube system. These conduits and manholes are laid in various types of streets from the most modern type of cement roadbed to the older type of loose macadam. The conditions as found could be considered as typical of any public utility in the electric-light and power field. The survey extended over a period of about a year beginning in June, 1929, and ending in July, 1930, and during this time 1,765 different manholes were tested and a total of 4,068 tests were made.Previous to starting the actual survey, one of the writers, G. W. Jones, spent considerable time in Boston determining the best methods of practical· test procedure. In this work cooperation was given by John Campbell, superintendent, special service department, who for a number of years has been making a study of explosions in underground street areas and preventive measures in Boston and various cities.After this preliminary investigation the tests were continued by employees of the Edisun Company. Copies of all records of tests were forwarded to the United States Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station so that the writers were in close touch with the progress of the survey, and changes could be made in the test procedure whenever deemed necessary."

This report describes a study of beryllium recovery from sulfate leach liquor by di-2-ethylhexyl phosphate (EHPA) solvent extraction in conjunction with caustic stripping. The work was one phase of Bureau of Mines research on process development for Spor Mountain, Utah, ores. Solution for the solvent extraction studies was prepared by sulfuric acid leaching of ore containing 0.6 pet BeO, Before solvent extraction of beryllium, the leach liquor was treated to prevent coextraetion of iron by either (1) removal of ferric iron by amine solvent extraction or (2) reduction of ferric iron to nonextractable ferrous iron by treatment with sulfur dioxide. Beryllim was extracted from the aqueous leach liquor by countercurrent multistage contacting with a kerosine solution of EHPA. The loaded organic solution was stripped with sodim hydroxide solution. Subsequently, beryllium hydroxide was precipitated by boiling the sodium beryllate strip solution and converted to beryllium oxide of 98 pct BeO-grade by calcining. Material of this grade can be directly processed into beryllium-copper alloy or be used as starting material for further refining to produce high-purity, nuclear-grade beryllium. Over 90 pct of the beryllium contained in the leach liquor was recovered as beryllia.

In 1939, American industry got, off to a poor start, slowed down further during the first quarter, quickened after May, speeded up still more when war broke out again in Europe, and ended the year at a pace close to an all-time record. The average index of general business activity for the entire year (105) was well ahead of that for 1938 (86), failed to equal that of 1937 (110), and fell behind the average for 1929 (119) by a wide margin. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and full-scale tests to develop a process for improving the flotation characteristics of lime-treated waste water produced by the Kennecott Copper Corp., Magna, UT. Unknown substances in the waste water reduced the flotation efficiency of the metal sulfides. An estimated annual loss of 795,000 lb Cu, 232,000 lb Mo, 5,625 tr oz Ag, and 617 tr oz Au would result from recycling the total flow from the lime treatment plant to the flotation mill in an effort to conserve water and reduce associated expense. The tests indicated that aeration or treatment with activated carbon significantly improved the water quality. The improvements in molybdenum recovery averaged 8 pct for carbon, 11 pet for activated carbon, and 16 pct for combined aeration and activated carbon. The combination of the two processes produced water quality as good as or better than normal feed water.

"INTRODUCTION Molybdenite, the only common mineral and ore of molybdenum, occurs wide¬-spread but is concentrated as the main ore mineral in commercial quantities in only a few known deposits. Consequently, the Government sought additional sources of the minerals as a precaution against the possible shortage of moylbdenm for war uses. Upon request by the War Production Board, the New Year’s Eve and Esperanza properties of the Amargosa Molybdenum & Copper Corp. were investigated by the Geological Survey 3/ and the bureau of Mines 4/. The Survey appraised the mineral potentialities of the deposit and prepared topographic and geologic maps, and the Bureau made a preliminary engineering examination. The deposits were previously examined by W. J. Vanderwilt, consulting engineer. It was largely due to his recommendations that interest was stimulated in the deposits.Development on the New Year’s Eve deposit indicated a small tonnage of sub marginal ore. There was little development at the Esperanza, but surface examination revealed a large volume of rock containing a little molybdenite and a trace of copper in the oxidized outcrops. Some molybdic oxide was noted suggesting that some molybdenite might have been leached from the oxidized outcrops and that the molybdenite content in the sulfide zone might be higher."
