In the fiscal years 1946 and 1947 the number of mine explosions decreased compared with the preceding years. However, the loss of life was so serious during the fiscal year 1947 the period when the Government administered bi- tuminous-coal and lignite mines that from April to June 1947 extraordinary measures were taken in mines then under Government possession to obtain com- pliance with provisions concerning rock dusting, ventilation, and blasting that had not been followed. The great loss of life in explosions during the fiscal year 1947 as compared with 1944, 1945, and 1946 is not easy to explain, but the necessity for maintaining adequate protection has been definitely demonstrated. Management, workers, and inspection agencies alike must keep the mines reasonably safe against explosions or allow them to lapse into a condition where chance is the principal protection against disaster. The at- tention given to protecting coal mines and the men employed in them against mine fires, following the disastrous fires in 1944 and 1945, has at least tem- porarily controlled this hazard loss of life from coal-mine fires was re- duced to 1 fatality in 1947. The number of fires was also less, and progress has been made in reducing the heavy losses in both life and property from un- derground coal-mine fires that occurred in the two years mentioned. Fatalities from mine explosions during the past 6 fiscal years, July 1942 to June 1947, totaled 674, and there were 149 explosions; during the preceding 6 years there were 655 fatalities in 132 explosions. The 6 fiscal years 1942- 47 cover the active period of Federal coal-mine inspection. During the fiscal year 1947, there were 154 fatalities from explosions compared with 58 during the fiscal year 1946, 64 in 1945, 94 in 1944, 152 in 1943, and 152 in 1942.

Salt is a universal mineral commodity used by virtually every person in the world. Although a very common mineral today, at one time, it was considered as precious as gold in certain cultures. This study traces the material flow of salt from its origin through the postconsumer phase of usage. The final disposition of salt in the estimated 14,000 different uses, grouped into several macrocategories, is traced from the dispersive loss of salt into the environment to the ultimate disposal of salt-base products into the waste stream after consumption. The base year for this study is 1990, in which an estimated 196 million short tons of municipal solid waste was discarded by the U.S. population. Approximately three-fourths of domestic salt consumed is released to the environment and unrecovered while about one-fourth is discharged to landfills and incinerators as products derived from salt. Cumulative historical domestic production, trade, and consumption data have been compiled to illustrate the long-term trends within the U.S. salt industry and the cumulative contribution that highway deicing salt has had on the environment.

"The fifth annual National Safety Competition conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines to determine the best safety records at mines and quarries during the calendar year 1929 has been concluded, and the general results of the contest are presented herewith. To the winner in each of the five groups into which the contestants were divided there has been awarded the bronze trophy 'Sentinels of. Safety,' donated by the Explosives Engineer magazine. The trophy for bituminous coal mines was won by a mine in Alabama; that for metal mines by an iron-ore mine in Michigan; that for nonmetallic mineral mines by a salt mine in New York; that for quarries and open-cut mines went to a limestone quarry in Michigan;. the trophy provided for anthracite mines was, of course, won by a mine in Pennsylvania, as all of the anthracite mines participating in the contest are situated in that State.Winners of the trophies were selected by a committee of sward in accordance with rules governing the contest and on the basis of accident records furnished by the various companies to the Bureau of Mines. These records were summarized by the bureau and the results submitted to the committee. Members of the committee are W. H. Cameron, managing director of the National Safety Council. William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor; James F. Callbreath, secretary of the American Mining Congress; T. T. Read, Vinton professor of mining of Columbia University and editor of 'Mining and Metallurgy'; C. B. Huntress, executive secretary of the National Coal Association; A. J., Curtis, assistant to the general manager of the Portland Cement Association; A. T. Goldbeck, director of the engineering bureau of the National Crushed Stone Association.Thirty-four States were represented in the l29 contest. Among the plants which participated were 68 bituminous coal mines, 29 anthracite mines, 54 metal mines, 19 nonmetallic mineral mines, all of the foregoing being underground mines, and 141 quarries or open-cut mines. A total of 106,533,006 man-hours of work was reported by all of the companies. Accidents during the year numbered 7,008 and represented a period of disability equal to 986,306 man-days. Hence the accident-severity rate for all plants combined represented 9.3 man-days of disability for each thousand man-hours of exposure to hazard. Similarly, the combined accident-frequency rate for all plants showed that 66.3 accidents occurred for every million man-hours of exposure to hazard. Both of these rates indicated an improvement over the combined rates for all plants in the previous year's contest. The reduction in the accident-severity rate centered chiefly in the metal mine group, though all except the quarry and open-cut mine group shared in the reduction; the improvement in the accident-frequency rate was in all croups except anthracite and metal, the rate for the former having increased while that of the latter remained unchanged."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a Laboratory and pilot-plant investigation of the flotation of iron sulfides from zinc-lead mill tailings near Platteville, in south-western Wisconsin, at the North Central Experiment Station, Minneapolis, Minn. The procedures used and the results obtained in this investigation are described in this report. Samples for laboratory tests were obtained from each mill in the district, namely, Calumet & Hecla, Inc., Eagle-Picher Co., Vinegar Hill Zinc Co., and Tri-State Zinc, Inc. The sample fat pilot-plant work was obtained from the Davis Mining Enterprises mill.

ANTICIPATING the eventual use of the huge tonnages of nonmagnetic taconites of the Mesabi range of the United States, the Federal Bureau of Mines is classifying and evaluating these deposits in detail. This introductory report describes work begun in 1954 as part of a long-range program to sample, classify, and evaluate important occurrences of nonmagnetic taconite on the Mesabi, range. Included in this report are brief discussions of the geology, history, and potential of the Mesabi range district and mining industry, together with a more detailed presentation of the sampling and metallurgical evaluation of these nonmagnetic taconite deposits. A total of 898 field samples was collected. Most of these were taken in the region between Grand Rapids and Chisholm, Minn., but a few came from the area between Chisholm and Buhl, Minn. Of the total samples, 865 were from open pit bank faces where the greater vertical distances presented by the cherty members facilitated the taking of a large number of samples. Conversely, the narrow face presented by the slaty members confined and limited the areas from which samples were taken. In addition, 33 of the field samples were taken from rock dumps in order to determine, in a preliminary way, the characteristics of these materials.

In January 1980, the Bureau of Mines initiated an experimental program to examine the fire and explosion hazards of one-hour self-contained self rescuers (SSRs). This action was prompted by a growing concern on the part of government and industrial safety officials over the potential hazards of these devices when deployed on a large scale in underground coal mines. Prior evaluation of the safety of these devices had been at best sporadic and usually limited to experimental models. The recent availability of preproduction models of a l-hour SSR fabricated by the Mine Safety Appliance Company* and a production model manufactured by Dragerwerk Ag Lubeck of the Federal Republic of Germany allowed for a more comprehensive and meaningful evaluation of their safety in underground coal mines. This report summarizes the results of a 5-month study of the potential hazards of these two items. During the course of the work, periodic progress reports were presented to officials of the Mine Safety and Health Administration and various mining organizations including the American Mining Congress, Bituminous Coal Operators of America. National Independent Coal Operators Association, and the United Mine Workers of America. The free exchange of ideas that occurred during these meetings had a significant impact on the direction of this study and a serious attempt was made to address all of the issues that were raised at these meetings. The authors are extremely grateful to the individuals that participated in defining the specific problems that could arise as a result of deploying the self-contained self rescuers in an underground coal mine environment.

The goal of the design is to incorporate improvements in testing sensitivity/accuracy, durability, and ease of operation over existing equipment. It is also desirable for the new design to successfully perform gas content determinations of multiple chemical species from a rock sample.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report chronicles the historical development of longwall mining in the United States and speculates on future developments to the turn of the century. The involvement and contributions made by the Bureau during these developments are also discussed. Two major periods of history are analyzed: (1) from 1875 to 1950 when small advancing faces were operated manually, and (2) from 1950 to 1990 when mechanized extraction and powered roof supports provided a system to efficiently extract large coal panels. Five eras of technological development during the modern period are described and analyzed. These eras discuss the development of (1) mechanized extraction, (2) powered roof supports, (3) high-capacity roof supports, (4) shield supports, and (5) system automation. Current trends are analyzed in terms of longwall utilization, face production, support capacity, face widths, and new technological developments. From these analyses, the future of longwall mining to the year 2000 is speculated. It is concluded that longwall mining will continue to grow in importance during the next decade and that the next major technological milestone will be the realization of a fully automated longwall mining system.

This Bureau of Mines report delineates the coal reserve base of anthracite, bituminous and subbituminous coals, and lignite, by mining method and sulfur content, for coal-bearing States west of the Mississippi River. The parameters used to establish the reserve base definition are the result of a joint agreement by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey. The reserve base of low-sulfur coal, =10 percent sulfur, is 167,324.5 million tons; medium-sulfur coal, 1.1-3.0 percent sulfur, is 37,531.5 million tons; and high-sulfur coal, >3.0 percent sulfur, is 11,244.1 million tons. The reserve base of coal with an unknown sulfur level is 18,323.0 million tons. The percentages of deep and strippable coal are 56 percent and 44 percent, respectively. The basis for reserve base estimates and analytical data for this report was the Fuels Availability System, a Bureau of Mines data bank containing numerous data tin fossil fuels. Information contained in the system was obtained from publications of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Geological Survey, State agencies, private publications, and company data.

It describes briefly operations and mining methods at the Basic Refractories , Inc. , brucite deposit , the only commercial deposit of brucite in production in the United States . The mine and crushing plant are in secs . 26 and 35 , T. 12 N. , R. 36 E. , M. D. B. & M. , northwestern Nye County , Nev . , 1 mile east of Gabbs and about 33 miles northeast of Luning , a town on the Mina branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad and U. S. Highway 95. The evaporation of crude oil without doubt causes one of the largest single losses to which the oil is subjected after it is taken from the ground. The few days during which crude oil is stored on the lease before being taken by the pipe line, causes an aggregate loss per year from evaporation estimated at 122,100,000 gallons of gasoline in the Mid-Continent field alone. This has a value, at 22 cents per gallon, of $26,880,000 and represents about 3 per cent of the total gasoline produced in the United States from all fields and all sources. Oil shale, a potential source of products presently obtained from petroleum, is found in many countries. The most extensive known deposits from the standpoint of potential shale oil in place are those in Brazil and the United States of America. Mining methods used for oil shale range from open-pit operations for shallow deposits to room-and-pillar and longwall techniques for deposits with thick overburdens. Oil shales from different sources vary greatly in the amounts and types of organic and inorganic constituents. By retorting, the organic material is converted to oil, gas, and coke. The largest percentages of oil are obtained from materials having the highest hydrogen content. Over 2,000 retorting systems have been patented, but only a few have been used industrially, and no single process seems best for all types of shales or economic conditions. Shale oils have different characteristics, depending on the source rock and method of retorting. They contain large quantities of olefinic hydrocarbons and more oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur derivatives of hydrocarbons than most petroleums. Consequently, petroleum refining methods usually must be modified for shale oil. This is particularly true in catalytic processing. Hydrogenation, even under mild conditions, improves shale-oil refinability. Several byproducts may be obtained from both the retorting and refining steps,

A study was made by the Bureau of Mines of the temperature and thermal stress distributions in thin circular disks subjected to peripheral thermal shock at various rates of heat transfer. The theoretical analysis is based on one-dimensional radial heat flow by conduction in the disk, and on heat exchange by convection between the disk and its surroundings. Preliminary experimental data obtained from shock tests on thin circular disks of basalt, quartzite, and taconite show reasonably good agreement with theory. The case of constant properties and plane stress is treated. Solutions of the stress distribution are presented for both cooling and heating shocks. The elastic energy stored at fracture is examined, and on this basis an average stress theory is formulated. Physical properties vital to the studies include thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, tensile strength, Young's modulus, and linear coefficient of thermal expansion. This work is of importance in predicting the thermal shock responses of a rock body of finite size.

Nineteen eighty-seven was a year of significant change in the Bureau of Mines-change to help it better adapt and respond to the wide range of new challenges facing the U.S. mineral industry. The Bureau has been regarded as the world's premier mineral information and research agency. Its authoritative, comprehensive data and its pioneering research have contributed significantly to the minerals position of the United States. Yet no organization in today's complex, dynamic world, with its rapidly advancing technologies, can afford to rest on its laurels. Mission and program must be constantly fresh and relevant to the day's issues and problems. Moreover, rather than reacting to events, the organization must strive to anticipate and prepare for them. It must have a sense-a vision, if you will-for the future.

"INTRODUCTION At various times, North Carolina has supplied small quantities of brown-iron ore to the furnace o the South. Between 1917 and 1920, the quantity reported to the Federal Geological Survey was 126,000 tons. Most of this came from Cherokee County. 3/In furtherance of the program initiated by the Bureau of Mines to develop additional reserve of iron ore during the emergency, the Cherokee County deposits were examined by an engineer 4/ of the Bureau of Mines, and work was recommended on,12 properties.The project was begun in April 1944 and continued intermittently until April 1945, when work was stopped. During this period, eight properties were explored, and an additional property was mapped.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. For several years prior to about the middle of 1928 both the number and capacity of natural-gasoline plants showed a steady increase; this resulted from a material gain in the supply of casinghead has due to the discovery of a number of flush fields with relatively high gas-oil ratios. From 1928 to date some form of proration has been continually in force, with a consequent curtailment in the supply of wet gas. This decline in available gas and a severe decrease in prices, due largely to the increasing competition of light refinery products, has eliminated virtually all of the weaker units during the last 5 years, with the result that the number of plants declined from 1,155 on January 1, 1928 to 19035 on January 1, 1930, to 909 on January 1, 1932, and then to 859 on January 1, 1934, The struggle of the small high-cost producers to exist is illustrated further by the trend in the number of shut-down plants, which has increased from 36 on January 1, 1930 to 100 on January 1, 1932 and to 128 on January 1, 1934. The increase in the number of plants prior to 1929 resulted in a material gain in the total capacity, but the decline in number between 1929 and 1932 was not followed by a corresponding decrease in capacity, as gains resulting from the construction of a few very large plants overbalanced the loss due to the dismantling of a large number of small ones. However, the low prices of 1932 and 1933 supplied little incentive for new construction, and the total capacity declined in approximately the same ratio as the number. Thus the total capacity declined from 11,387,000 gallons daily on January 1, 1932 to 13,060,000 gallons daily on January 1, 1934, Of the latter 9,181,000 gallons (91 percent) represented the capacity of the operating plants and 679,000 gallons (9 percent) the capacity of the idle plants.

The rapid growth of the organic chemical industry in the United States and abroad has focused attention on the future raw-material sources for this important industry. Chemical products are essential to modern civilization; and millions of tons of organic chemicals are used annually, ranging from basic raw materials to finished chemical products such as drugs, cosmetics, and soaps. Hundreds of chemical products are made directly or indirectly from coal, but in this report "coal chemicals" will be limited to crude tar, crud light oil, and ammonia recovered in the high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal and the important principal products obtained by processing these materials. Specifically these include benzene} toluene, xylene, naphthalene, creosote oil, tar acid oil, pitch, and ammonium sulfate. Therefore the term "coal chemicals", wherever used in this report, includes only these products and does not include the secondary or intermediate products such as styrene, synthetic phenol, aniline, phthalic anhydride, or finished products made from these, such as synthetic rubber, plastics, and dyes. The United States leads the world in production and consumption of coal chemicals. In the past five years nearly one-fourth of the total output of coal-tar crudes in the world was produced in the United States. Consumption of some of the more important products derived from these crudes such as benzene, toluene, xylene, and naphthalene, however, ranged from about one-third to one-half of the world total because of imports and production of benzene, toluene, and xylene from petroleum. The synthetic organic chemical industry of the United States was established during World War I on chemical raw materials obtained by the high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal but this source of supply currently furnishes less than 40 percent. More than 60 percent of the chemical raw materials used to produce organic and inorganic chemical is supplied by the petroleum industry and production of petrochemicals is rising rapidly.

The following report is a summary of the commercial results which 'Were obtained from 2,000 tests conducted by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey at St. Louis, Mo., and Norfolk, Va., in 1907 and 1908, under the technical supervision of R. H. Fernald, engineer in charge of the producer-gas section. The tests dealt primarily with gasoline, forming part of the investigation of mineral fuels provided for by acts of Congress. To determine the relative economy and efficiency of gasoline it was compared with denatured alcohol. The tests, many of which were undertaken in connection with work for the Navy Department, supplemented, to a certain extent, the work of previous investigations, but only so far as was necessary to emphasize some of the more important points and to lead up to the defining of conditions required for the economical use of gasoline and alcohol. In order to determine and eliminate the affecting engine conditions as far as possible, the investigation was commenced by making comparative gasoline and alcohol tests on the same engines. These tests were repeated on other engines of approxiElately the same size and speed, having different degrees of comFression, different methods of governing, and different carburetors. The final report will include much material that may be of use in engine design, but that side of the investigation was not pursued any further than was necessary to obtain the best possible results, for alcohol and for gasoline with the engines at hand, and to prove that the minimum fu·el-consumption rate for each could be obtained in approximately the same manner. The effects of engine and of operating conditions both have a bearing on the commercial deductions but will be discussed only in a general way at this time.

THIS REPORT by the Federal Bureau of Mines presents data on water-supply wells used by waterflood operators in North Texas and shows the distribution of permeable source sediments. Averages of well characteristics, including static fluid levels, working fluid levels, net thicknesses, producing rates, and depths, are presented and discussed. Essentially all water used in waterflooding is mineralized water from consolidated sediments. This study is concerned with the geology and distribution of these mineralized source sediments, whereas previous work in this area was predominantly a study of shallow sources of potable water. Tables, isopachous maps, and electric-log cross sections are included to describe the several source aquifers. In general, water-producing capacity increases with depth of the sediments. Wells completed in Cretaceous sediments 82 to 600 feet deep yield 50 to 600 barrels of water daily, whereas those completed in Pennsylvanian sediments 360 to 4,110 feet deep yield 100 to 7,000 barrels daily. Although deeper formations are used where oil and water are produced conjunctively and where large withdrawal rates are required, insufficient well data prevented mapping of deeper formations.

The organization of the'Explosives Division is indicated by the accompanying chart (fig. 1). As this has been discussed in a previous report3/, it will not be considered further in this report. The activities of the various units are outlined below. I. INFLAMMABILITY OF GASES AND VAPORS4/ Determination of the Explosion Hazards of Combustible Gases and Vapors Found in Mines and Industries The Explosives Division maintains, at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, a laboratory specially equipped for the determination of the explosion hazards of combustible gases and vapors. Of particular importance, is the determination of the chemical composition within which explosions may occur and beyond which there is no danger of explosion, combustion or inflammation. These limits, known as the limits of inflammability, as determined by this and other laboratories, have been compiled in Bulletin 279 of this Bureau. The last revised edition (1931) of this bulletin has been exhausted. Since it was published, the Pittsburgh laboratory has determined the limits of about 40 combustibles and has ascertained more precisely and accurately many previously published limits.
