This report describes a 4-inch diameter borehole probe which contains a low light level TV camera, magnetic compass, light illumination source, bottom/water detector sensor and a pointing angle sensor. The camera viewing angle is at a right angle to the probe's body. All data from the sensor is multiplexed into the closed circuit camera video for transmission on a single 50 ohm coaxial cable to a surface control unit. Likewise control of the probe's power, zoom lens, focus, panning and aperture is accomplished via a down-link multiplexed on the same cable.

The 1965 Lignite Symposium, the Louth in a series and the third sponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines, was held at Bismarck, N. Dak., on April 29-30, 1963. These symposia provide a forum for those interested in the technology and utilization of solid fuels, especially lignitic coals. As part of the meeting, a 200-mile field trip was taken including; inspection of (1) the 200-megawatt, pulverized lignit-fired Leland Olds plant of Basin Electric Power Cooperative, under construction near Stanton, N. Dak.; (2) the site of the Glunharold mine of the Truax-Traer Coal Co., Division of Consolidation Coal Co., where a wheel excavator was being assembled; (3) the operating Beulah mine of Knife River Coal Mining Co., subsidiary of Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., near Beulah, N. Dak.; and (4) the 400-megawatt, hydroelectric Garrison Dam powerplant, near Garrison, N. Dak.

Since the return of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines to normal peacetime functions following World War II, a coordinated program of oil and gas development and production research has been in prog- ress, and the importance of the problems has been evaluated so that the Bureau can render greater service to the oil and gas industry. Among the problems associated with development and production research, those concerned with efficient utilization of the Nation's reserves of hydro- carbons contained in gas-condensate type reservoirs continue to receive major emphasis. For a number of years an important part of the Bureau's work has been the study of two pressing problems associated with production from such reservoirs; first; an investigation of fluid properties, and the second, finding a means of controlling corrosion. Studies of the characteristics of gas-condensate fluids have resulted in the publication of a number of reports, which cover a broad field. In general they deal with subjects such as the properties of a fluid from a well; development of research equipment, means of combatting corrosion, and the many aspects of gas-condensate engineering. To provide experimental data on relative liquid and gas volumes and critical pressures and temperatures, a windowed cell was constructed that permits ob- servation of the fluid phase while making the tests. Experimentation in the field on the use of inhibitors to control corro- sion of equipment in gas-condensate wells has disclosed that solutions of chromate are effective retardants of corrosion. Engineering field studies of the Carthage and New Hope gas-condensate fields are in progress, and reports on the Sheridan and Lake Creek fields have been completed. "During the past three years the Bureau of Mines has carried on an extensive research program at the Rolla Laboratory for the beneficiation of low-grade Arkansas baixites by ore dressing methods. As a result of this study a 50-ton pilot mill was designed and constructed at Bauxite, Arkansas, by the Bureau to continue the investigation on a semi-commercial scale. The built both to reduce the experimental work to practice and to obtain operating data that cannot be determined by laboratory or small scaleTen samples of bauxitic material were mined and stockpiled at the plant site to ensure an ample supply of material for milling in the pilot plant. These samples were obtained from various bauxite deposits in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Arkansas. The deposits were selected as typical of a wide range of bauxitic material which would necessitate treatment under different conditions and by various concentration methods. All of the samples contained a higher silica content than permissible in Bayer-grade bauxite and several contained so much iron oxide that the available alumina content of the ore was mate¬rially lowered. From data obtained by milling operations on these ten samples, milling characterietics of most of the ores in the district should be predictable. This paper summarizes the results obtained in the laboratory testing of representative samples of each stock pile, and the results of small scale continuous testing of the composite sample of the ten stock piles in the gravity-flotation pilot plant at the Rolla Laboratory."

Open-cut mining of copper ores in the western United States is a relatively new industry. At first the mining methods were mainly adapted from those used at open-cut iron mines and at quarries, but now efficient practices that are more suitable for the copper deposits have been developed. The pioneer in this field is the Utah Copper Co., of Bingham, Utah, which deserves great credit for working out much of the early procedure. Stripping began at that mine in 1906, and the large Garfield concentrator was put in commission in 1908. Next in order of development were the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., at Ely, Nev. ; the Chino mine of the Ray Consolidated Copper Co., at Santa Rita, N. Mex. ; the New Cornelia Copper Co., at Ajo, Ariz. ; the Sacramento Hill mine of the Copper Queen Branch, Phelps Dodge Corporation, at Bisbee, Ariz.; and the open cut of the United Verde Copper Co., at Jerome, Ariz. The Sacramento Hill mine began to produce in 1923, and the United Verde open-cut mine has produced ore mainly in connection with stripping. The writer visited the Utah Copper mine in September, 1923; the Nevada Consolidated in August, 1923; the Chino in July, 1924; and the New Cornelia, the Sacramento Hill, and the United Verde open cut at various times during 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925, mostly in connection with other work.

This paper presents the results of a case study conducted in a two-entry gateroad in a coal mine where excessive roof deformation and bolt loading resulted in failure of many roof supports. The instruments consisted of 16 fully grouted, strain-gaged resin bolts, load cells on both full and partially grouted cable bolts, and vertical deflection multipoint extensometers. These instruments were installed on-cycle to measure loading on bolts in an existing support pattern and to determine if cable bolts could be used to improve roof stability. Results showed significant amounts of movement within the bolted zone. In some cases, these movements were enough to load the supports past their ultimate strength. Geology appeared to be a significant factor in localized roof degradation; that is, a very weak rock layer in the immediate roof overlain by a very strong rock layer contributed to the development of shear planes. Only one instrumented bolt had a maximum strain of less than 2,000 microstrain, which was the yield point of the steel. The average maximum strain on all bolts was 20,000 microstrain. However, electrical continuity to many gages was lost and a pattern was noted that would indicate possible bolt failure. Wire mesh and concrete cans installed as secondary support performed very effectively.

Thirty-five years ago underground coal mining equipment consisted of simple but rugged machines powered by electric motors and hydraulics. The machines were maintained by maintenance personnel armed with a basic knowledge of hydraulics, electricity, and mechanical design. Over the years the the machine has been transformed into powerful complex mining systems. The maintenance burden has also increased. During this period significant advances have been made in maintainability engineering and system design techniques. Many of these innovations and techniques are applicable to the design of underground mining equipment. The objectives of this project were to; (1) determine the extent to which maintainability design concepts and principles have been applied to the design of underground coal mining equipment, (2) try to assess the impact of equipment design for maintenance on productivity and safety, and (3) develop a maintainability design guideline to enhance the design of new or rebuilt equipment. An equipment design review was completed at ten operational coal mines. Interviews were also conducted with mine management, safety, and maintenance personnel to identify machine specific design advantages and problems. Visits were also made to six original equipment manufacturers to discuss the design of their equipment for maintenance. Volume I presents an overview of the protocol used and a summary of the findings. Volume II includes the maintainability design guide for underground mobile mining equipment.

Long-range projection of demand for domestic crude oil indicates a continued upward movement and accentuates the need for increasing the recovery from known crude-oil resources to supplement expected future discoveries. Consequently, the industry and Government have given special attention to the viscous or heavy-oil deposits because they offer the distinct possibility of large order increases in ultimate recovery. This report presents data pertaining to 150 heavy-oil reservoirs in Arkansas including oil characteristics of samples from 38 of these reservoirs. To January 1, 1967, about 600 million bbl of heavy oil has been recovered from the 150 reservoirs in 63 oilfields; however, about 4.5 billion bbl, or 88 pct, of oil remained in the ground. Of prime importance is that much of this heavy-oil resource is in reservoirs having characteristics considered favorable for thermal-recovery operations. Data for the thermal projects initiated [thus Ear are presented in individual field discussions. Also discussed is the t crude oil supply-demand situation in the State.

During the course of the cooperative smoke abatement investigation carried on by the Bureau of Mines , the city of Salt Lake and the University of Utah during 1919-1920 , a study was made as to the suitability of Utah coals for by-product coking with particular reference to low temperature coking . was done because it was realized that a smokeless fuel for domestic consumers was the best remedy for this class of smoke producer . A report of the technical side of the work was included in the final report of the cooperative investiga- Since this report was written (June 1 , 1920) further work has been done by other investigators .

This report describes in detail the circuitry used in the Automated Time Domain Reflectometry System and the testing and modification done to the system to improve the units performance and consistency. The analog ATDR software is described and explained in detail. Also attempts to implement the same Assembly Language program in a higher level language (PLM) are documented along `h two versions of the PLM program - one which uses a data filtering approach to limit noise and another which uses data averaging to reduce noise. The field testing of the analog and digital ATDR units is described along with the hardware modifications that resulted. The analog unit has been abandoned and the digital unit adopted for most field tests. Tests indicate that the digital units are much more consistent and less confusing for the lay-person to operate. The results indicate that the it can locate an abnormality in a test cable to within 5% of the true location (provided the cable phase velocity is known). The units can consistently locate shunt type faults which are less than 300 ohms and series type faults which are greater than 30 ohms.

This Bureau of Mines report is an expansion and update of Information Circular 8719 and comprises maps and tables listing the name, location, and other pertinent data concerning certain fuel-related projects. The maps show the locations of the planned or proposed facilities. The tables include information on projects involving the proposed or planned development of fuel resources, as well as the development of storage, transportation, and conversion facilities. The report covers the 24 States west of the Mississippi River including Alaska and Hawaii. Of the 808 projects for which information is provided, 219 concern coal mines, 246 concern electric generating plants, and 115 concern uranium mines; Energy Supply and Environmental Coordination Act coal conversion notices are also included. Because of the dynamic nature of the energy industry, many uncertainties exist and some of the listed projects may never become realities. Also, no attempt has been made to determine the degree of certainty or viability of each project.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 495 natural gas samples from 21 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 376 samples were collected during calendar year 1968. The remaining 119 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results Here not received until 1968. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917 and in late 1965 was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Ten previous publications have presented results of 8,165 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Hines Helium Activity prior to 1968. Andros Analyzers Incorporated has designed and built two prototype continuous methane monitors capable of being mounted on a mining machine'. These instruments were designed for in-mine safety use. The monitors incorporated an NDIR optical/electronic analyzer design in which the response to the sample gas (methane in air) was achieved by synchronous detection and measurement of the amplitude oscillations of the trasmitted energy from an infrared source caused by the pressure modulation of the sample gas within the optical cell. Zero and span stability were to be achieved by the amplitude modulating of the infra-red source and using detected signal to correct for optical/electronic system variation. This design effort was to simplify and reduce the cost of the major components while eliminating the need for daily calibration. This report is the final report on this effort.

Nine high-volatile bituminous Utah coals were carbonized singly and in blends with low-and medium-volatile bituminous coals. Of the 9 coals, 2 are in commercial use as the base coals in blends that produce industrially accept-able metallurgical coke, while 7 are regarded as weakly coking and are not used commercially in coking blends. The carbonization tests were made in a la-inch diameter, cylindrical retort, using 50-pound charges. Sunnyside coal blended with autogenous char generally produced larger and stronger coke than was yielded by straight Sunnyside coal. The volatile matter of the char and the concentration of the char in the blend appear to be important parameters influencing coke size and strength. A blend of 10 per-cent autogenous char of 7.2-percent volatile matter with Sunnyside coal yielded coke that was larger, stronger, and of higher apparent specific gravity than coke produced from an industrial coke oven blend consisting of 15 percent medium-volatile coal and 85 percent Sunnyside coal.

Ultrasonic ranging sensors are inexpensive, have no moving parts, have no lenses to clean, are normally small and unobtrusive, and can measure distances through moderate amounts of dust, smoke, and humidity, so they are well suited to underground mines. In the work reported here, conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, researchers tested ultrasonic ranging sensors for their abiity to define rib line features for computer-aided navigation of underground mine mobile equipment. The investigation began with laboratory tests of field of view, angle of incidence, intersensor variation, and ranging accuracy of the individual rangers in a ring array produced by Denning Robotics of Wilmington, MA. The results showed that the sensors have good accuracy and low variability. Additional experiments at AMAX's Henderson Mine showed the sensors could accurately and reliably measure the distance to mine features, including convex and concave corners and rib intersections. The results showed that when used properly, the ranger data are accurate enough for reliable mine vehicle navigation When used incorrectly, ultrasonic rangers do not provide the anticipated data. Therefore, this report explains the principles of ultrasonic range measurement, describes the ranger's strengths and weaknesses, and explains proper ranger use and data analysis.

This paper describes mining methods and practices of the Morenci Branch, Phelps Dodge Corp., Greenlee County, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts in the United States. A similar program, conducted from 1928 to 1939, was generally conceded to have contributed substantially to improving the efficiency of mining operations. The morenci open-pit mine (see photograph, fig. 1) is in southeastern [zona] (fig. 2), on U.S. Highway 666 about 5 miles north of Clifton, county at of Greenlee County. The concentrator and smelter are near the mine at an altitude of about 4,400 feet. Figure 3 is a map of the mine and plant.

The Federal Bureau of Mines reviewed the status of tungsten deposits of Utah in 1959. Industrial requirements of tungsten during emergencies have exceeded the domestic supply, and a knowledge of the sources of this strategic element may be helpful in the future. Tungsten occurs as the mineral scheelite in deposits that have been developed or explored on approximately 60 properties in 10 of the Great Basin ranges of Utah, none of which were being worked in 1957-59. Ores from most of the productive areas are similar in that they are contained in tactite deposits on or near the contact of calcareous and acidic intrusive rocks. The tactite ores consist predominantly of the silicate minerals garnet, epidote, and diopside and the carbonate rocks limestone or dolomite. Scheelite, where present, is disseminated irregularly in the tactite. Tungsten ores from Utah mainly have been produced from small deposits worked in World Wars I and II and the Korean campaign. The ores were either hand sorted to a grade ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 percent tungsten trioxide (W03) or were beneficiated in small mills to higher grade concentrates. The largest reserve appears to be in the area of the Notch Peak intrusive in the House Range, Millard County. A large part of the reserve in the House Range is mineralized tactite containing 0.2 to 0.3 percent W03. Research on flotation by the Bureau of Mines has indicated a method of concentrating scheelite in tactite ores that average 0.25 percent W03, with at least 85 percent recovery. The concentrate assays more than 5 percent W03 and can be processed into artificial scheelite ready for industrial use.

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and, from the data developed, to determine: (a) Which coals, either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation, are suitable chemically under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. (c) Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation. This report is one in a county series and describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Logan County, W. Va. According to present-day standards for metallurgical coal, many believe that the sulfur content of the coal should not exceed 1.25 percent? Coal with more than this amount has been used for making metallurgical coke, especially when blended with coal containing less sulfur. In this series of reports 1.25 percent sulfur is used as a gage to determine whether or not a coal will be suited for metallurgical coke.
