This report is presented in the hope that it will assist in determining what method to use. The experiments have been designed to show the effect of the principal factors involved in the conditions of firing, and the results give information that seems to have some value.

Marine disposal of mill tailings has been practiced worldwide for over a century. However, only recently have the environmental effects of marine disposal been systematically studied. Some early attempts at marine disposal of tailings resulted in adverse impacts to marine life. However, recent advances in tailings disposal methods have included the introduction of engineered submarine tailings discharge systems, advanced environmental assessment and monitoring methods, and oceanographic modeling systems. Successful submarine tailings disposal (STD) has occurred at several mines. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (BOM) has undertaken studies of the disposal of mining and milling wastes in the marine environment. The BOM Alaska Field Operations Center, Juneau, initiated a review of the technology, regulations, and economic aspects of STD. The review illuminated the need for organization of literature on the subject, therefore the Bureau compiled this extensive bibliography on marine disposal of mill tailings. The bibliography presented here contains 1483 references and is also available through diskette in the Word Perfects format. A review of the references indicates that literature on submarine disposal inadequately covers the subject. The majority of the references listed only peripherally relate to the subject. Published literature on the engineering and environmental aspects of STD is severely limited.

A ventilated helical boost pump was developed that can handle varying flow rates and/or solids concentrations while operating at a single rotational speed and without computer assisted feedback controls. The boost pump developed and briefly tested during this program was designed to accomodate flows suitable for a 3-in. diameter pipeline. The boost pump's ventilated design provides the automatic pressure regulation needed to meet the system's requirements for supporting transient pipeline flow.

This report is a continuation and expansion of a previous USBM grant (No. G0254004) which examined alternative methods of handling the parting between two coal seams in a surface mining operation. The alternative methods consist of equipment implementation in either a stowing or haulback technique. Following a typical strip mine conformation, the parting is directly stowed or hauled back and placed in the pit bottom after second seam removal. The objectives are to produce an environmentally sound material placement technique and to increase prime stripping machine utilization. This report contains the engineering philosophy behind two computer programs created to evaluate parting handling methods over d wide range of coal and parting thickness ratios. The nature of the computer approach allows cost sensitivity analysis and quick updating of costs. The two programs are clearly presented with documentation and examples such that consumers may apply then to their own operations.

Synopsis U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accidents statistics have identified ore-pass hazards as a significant safety problem in U.S. underground metal mines. The statistics show that nearly 75% of injuries are directly or indirectly related to pulling or freeing of ore-pass chutes, the use of hand tools in ore passes, fails of broken rock in ore passes and structural failures of chutes or gates and ore-pass walls. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines. Risk assessment methods, such as fault-tree analysis, have been employed to identify the most probable causes of orepass failures, define research priorities and analyse the factors that result in malfunctioning and unsafe ore passes. Static and dynamic loads are being measured in a laboratory setting with the use of a reduced-scale orepass mock-up. Field tests are being initiated in mine ore passes to determine static and dynamic loads. Data from the test ore passes are being compared with data from the mine to characterize true system behaviour. Computer modelling with the use of closed-form solutions, finite-element analyses and a newly developed particle flow code predicts static and dynamic leads from the flow and the impact of ore and waste in the ore pass. Preliminary results indicate that dynamic impacts from ore and waste rock might be considerably greater than expected. The total static load is substantially less than is typically used fur the structural design of chute and gate support members. It is suggested that damping factors, normal and shear stiffness and mass frictional characteristics have a significant effect on particle flow and resulting impact loads. This is being verified with the use of results from laboratory tests, field tests and particle flow analyses. Ore passes are vertical or steeply inclined openings in a rock mass through which ore and waste are transported and where they mar also be stored. A typical underground mining system is shown in Fig. 1. The arrows indicate the locations of ore passes and loading pockets and their relative configurations. The control of material flow is potentially one of the most hazardous operations in underground mining. According to MSHA data. most of the ore pass-related accidents in the U.S.A. are associated with the loading-unloading cycle and removal of blockages from ore passes. In particular, attempts to free ore hang-ups have resulted in multiple fatalities. The hazards are obvious; there is uncertainty as to when the ore will break loose and miners are unable to escape falling rock to a safe location. Although ore passes and chutes and gate systems for underground metal and non-metal mines roust meet the requirements specified in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Parts 57 and 75, recent structural failures of ore-pass linings and gates have underlined the lack of adequate ore-pass design standards available to both MSHA enforcement staff and mine engineers. Because of the importance of an ore pass to the safe operation of a mine design criteria need to be assessed and new guidelines developed. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the Nationals Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines and studying design criteria for ore passes. PRODUCTION of cesium, cesium salts, and rubidium salts in the United States declined somewhat from 1961 levels; rubidium production was virtually unchanged. Imports of pollucite declined because consumption was supplied partially out of inventory. Domestic Production.-About 50 tons of pollucite was reported mined at the Tin Mountain mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., MSA Research Corp., Callery, Pa., and Penn Rare Metals, Inc., Revere, Pa., produced a total of 159 pounds of cesium. Rubidium production remained essentially the same as in 1961. Shipments of the two metals by these companies and by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Trona, Calif., totaled 279 pounds. Production of cesium and rubidium salts by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Penn Rare Metals, Inc., and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., declined substantially during 1962.

This publication presents abstracts of articles and investigations pertaining to the utilization of fly ash. The terms "fly ash" and "flue. ash," as' used in most of the papers, refer to the ash from pulverized-coal firing collected by electrostatic precipitators or mechanical collectors. Several investigators do not define the material on which they report beyond calling it fly ash, but they probably refer to the fine material resulting from burning pulverized coal. A few of the papers report on investigations involving not only the use of fly ash but boiler slag as well. These can be identified by the title of the articles. Bibliographical information and the abstracts are arranged according to the date the papers were published, with the most recent listed first. With the continually increasing use of pulverized-coal firing, profitable disposal of the fly ash is becoming a problem of greater importance to many utility and industrial companies. Also, in recent years, the public demand for cleaner air, and the more highly efficient fly-ash collectors available have resulted in the collection of a greater percentage of the fly ash produced. The solution to better utilization of fly ash has, therefore, been the object of research for some years.

Beneficiation of phosphate in the southeastern United States generates a slurry of finely divided clay. These clay-wastes are impounded to allow the particulates to settle. The aggregation of phosphatic clay-slime wastes and slimes produced from potash beneficiation by microbial processes was studied using several bacterial species known to produce polymeric substances. Experiments included flocculation capacity of clay-slimes by whole cells, the determination of respiratory activity of whole culls in the presence of phosphatic clays, observation of clay flocculation rates by polymers derived from these organisms, and clarity of polymer-flocculated clay suspensions. The polymer-producing organisms exhibited little capacity for flocculating phosphate and potash clay-slimes. Fungal spores of Cladosporium cladosporioides (isolated from a phosphate clay-waste impoundment), when agitated with clay-slime for several days, caused the clay to form pellets. Separation of the clay/fungal pellets (density 1.1 g ml-1) from the process water might he possible using a screening technique. Studies with C. cladosporioides included the determination of suitable energy substrates and supplements for growth, absorption studies of a pigment produced by the organism, determination of the time required for bioflocculant production by the organism, and an elucidation of the conditions required for the pelletization of clay-slimes by the fungus.

This report describes an investigation in which we used iron-doped diesel fuel to generate metal-bearing diesel particles and a subsequent analysis of the particles using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). For this study, DPM was generated by a 1.5-L diesel engine and the fuel was doped with ferrocene to enhance the level of iron in the system. The exhaust particles were collected on TEM grids and analyzed using the Philips CM12 TEM/EDS instrument. Results show that when the iron-to-carbon (soot) ratio (Fe/C) in the engine is low, the exhaust particles have morphologies similar to those for the undoped case, but at a threshold Fe/C value of 0.013 (for this engine), homogeneously nucleated metallic nanoparticles are formed and begin agglomerating. The number and size of these nanoparticles increase with level of doping. Metal-bearing particles that span a wider size range are also formed. Agglomeration of metallic and carbon particles is observed in two distinct modes: attachment of iron primary particles (5–10 nm in diameter) to carbon agglomerates, and coagulation of iron agglomerates (20–200 nm in diameter) with carbon agglomerates. Results of this work imply that as new engine technologies reduce soot levels in the engine and/or levels of trace metals in the fuel are increased, the generation of metallic nanoparticles may ensue, creating a potential health concern. The Bureau of Mines, through a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Defense, conducted research to recover silver from aircraft scrap. Silver was recovered by an electrolytic method from stainless steel honeycomb sections separated from the aircraft. These sections had been constructed by sandwiching a stainless steel honeycomb core between stainless steel sheets and then brazing the assembly with a silver alloy. Over 300 pounds of silver was used in the B-58 bomber, concentrated in certain honeycomb sections of the aircraft. Following shredding of the aircraft parts, an average of 95 percent (ranging 67 to 100 percent) of the silver was recovered in a single electro-refining step. After the electrorefined product was magnetically cleaned, purity of the recovered silver was greater than 99.3 percent.

Criteria applicable to noise in coal cleaning plants are presented, and the generally applicable noise control principles and approaches are discussed. The operating characteristics and equipment of coal cleaning plants are described. Considerations entering in the selection and design of noise control means are delineated, and specific means for equipment noise reduction are described. The limited utility of acoustically absorptive materials in plant spaces is indicated, administrative means for reducing worker noise exposure are pointed out, and ear-protective devices are described briefly. The reduction of plant noise reaching nearby communities is discussed. Programs leading to quieter machines an coal cleaning plants are suggested.

Salient information on reserves, production, and consumption of fuels and energy by State is summarized in this Bureau of Mines publication. Reserve and production data are shown for each of the fossil fuels (coal, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas) and for uranium. The consumption data of each of the major consuming sectors (household-commercial, industrial, transportation, electric power, and miscellaneous) are broken down by energy source (coal, petroleum, natural gas, hydropower, and nuclear). In addition, total energy consumption in the Nation in 1974 is compared with consumption in 1973 and 1975 (preliminary data).

This report covers the work performed by the Advanced Products Division of FMC Corporation under Bureau of Hines Contract J0155166, Design Evaluation for Development of an Advanced Bolter Module. FMC has evaluated the existing ISMS bolter designs, and the corrections and improvements in progress, including the effect of the three-chain magazine presently being fabricated, and recommends that a complete bolter module featuring a new magazine, safety post and lower stabilizer or similar device be designed, fabricated, and tested, A 29 week program is proposed which includes a four week demonstration. This module would eliminate those reliability problems not presently being solved and would provide a reliable bolter module for a production oriented miner/ bolter.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 675 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 24 States and 5 foreign countries. The samples obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1980 are included in tables 1-4. Those samples included in tables 5-7 were collected during the years 1960 through 1979. However, permission to publish the analyses of those samples was not given until the past year when the operators were again contacted to seek release of the information. All of these samples were collected as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576. The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Twenty-two previous publications have presented the results of 12,152 gas analyses made prior to 1980. This report documents-the process of literature review, site selection, instrument installation, data acquisition, and preliminary data reduction performed to evaluate the influence of rock mass discontinuities on coal mine subsidence. A system of surface, subsurface and mine level instrumentation was installed at the Armco No. 7 Mine in Montcoal, West Virginia where the overburden varied in thickness from 630 to 1040 feet. Survey monuments, borehole pressure cells, full profile borehole inclinometer-extensometers, mine level extensometers, stressmeters and tape extensometer convergence stations were installed to monitor displacements and stress changes. Final design of the instrumentation system was based on: a) review of available information, b) field mapping and analysis of areal photography, c) drilling, and d) borehole geophysics. The report contains the complete graphed data of stress and displacements accompanying the longwall mining of a 4800 ft long by 480 ft wide coal panel.
