A mine production locomotive, the world?s first applied industrial fuelcell vehicle, has been designed and tested in the context of a number of proof-of-concept projects supported by the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute, an international consortium of stakeholders dedicated to facilitate the commercialization of fuelcell vehicles. The locomotive?s simple electric-powered motor and controller system was ideal to study a number of requirements related to fuelcell power application: hydrogen power plant operation, underground hydrogen use, risk and regulatory requirements, production performance versus the conventional battery-powered locomotive version under measured duty cycles and production requirements, power plant design improvements for other fuelcell vehicles, and cost-benefit aspects. This article will focus on the design and testing aspects of this project which has led to successful performance demonstrations of the vehicle under surface and underground conditions at two mines. It will also present information on the creation of a safe, reliable and efficient power plant which fulfilled its design objectives, including longer productivity time for a given vehicle fill-up.

Jinlong copper smelter and refinery, originally designed for 100,000tpa primary copper and started up in 1997, has been expanding its capacity on the basis of operational optimization and by modifying its facilities. Currently it is producing 210,000tpa primary copper, and the new phase of expansion project with a target capacity of 350,000tpa primary copper is ongoing. This paper reviews problems and improvements made with operation and equipment in the past years. Recent plant operation is briefly described. The expansion projects completed are summarized and the ongoing expansion project is present.

"The paper reviews state-of-the art welding processes and consumables for structural and pressure equipment applications in offshore environments, particularly the Arctic. Optimum selection of consumables will be discussed with regard to the facility to meet tentative toughness requirements in weldments. Finally, the development of welding procedure specifications will be considered in relation to the prevention of hot or cold cracking and lamellar tearing.Welding RequirementsGeneralThe exploitation of Canadian frontier oil and gas reserves will require a fleet of various types of offshore structures. These will include fixed jacket types and semi-submersibles for the East Coast with huge man-made islands and icebreakers for the Arctic regions. Both these regions will also require supply and drill ships plus subsea pipelines and cargo tankers for transportation. Clearly the welding of these items will plays large part in the over-all integrity and safety of exploration and production operations.The required development in structural steels and pressure vessel steels, for current and future offshore structures, to improve properties, particularly toughness for lower temperature service, has also prompted welding researchers to develop process and consumable combinations to match the parent plate specifications. This development has had to consider particular aspects of weldability such as a low susceptibility to cold cracking and preventing low HAZ toughness. Current research has centred on attempts to increase HAZ toughness with higher heat input welding of newly developed structural steels.The installation of Arctic region pipelines has provided a sound base for future, more complex fabrications in the most severe service temperatures in the Canadian frontier although few of the installations have been designed to the lowest possible exposed temperature of -62°C."

"A reliable source of water of an acceptable quality is vital to the success of any mineral processing plant using wet methods. For Cerro Verde, a new 108,000 t/d copper mill in southern Peru, the main source of raw water is the Chili River. The Chili River is heavily contaminated with raw sewage, industrial wastewater and agricultural runoff, and can also receive high sediment loads during the rainy season. The initial water treatment plant could not supply design flows of water due to the exceptionally poor water quality. Problems with treated water quality caused significant difficulties with water consuming equipment, such as the plant cooling systems. This paper details the Cerro Verde water system and changes from design through to start up from a mineral processing perspective.INTRODUCTIONMining, and mineral processing in particular, is a water intensive activity. Improving water system design and practice are key strategic requirements in moving toward a more sustainable mining industry. This case study forms a basis for ongoing research into water use and reuse at mines and mineral process plants, conducted by AJ Gunson, under the supervision of Dr. Bern Klein and Dr. Marcello Veiga at the University of British Columbia. The case study material was gathered through involvement with the design, startup, and redesign of the Cerro Verde water system.Cerro Verde is a low-grade copper porphyry mine, located near the city of Arequipa in southern Peru, at an elevation approaching 2,800 m. In 1972, one of the world’s first copper Solvent Extraction – Electrowinning (SX/EW) facilities was built on the site, processing oxide ore from two main open pits. In 2004, the operator, Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (SMCV), approved a 108,000 t/d expansion project to process sulfide ore reserves through a new concentrator plant. The plant was designed under extremely tight schedule and capital constraints, with a mandate to intentionally avoid any overdesign."

"A study carried out on behalf of the National Research Council (NRC) indicates that economic losses due to wear in the Canadian mining industry are in excess of $700 million annually. Severe wear, mainly by abrasion, was identified as the most important wear mechanism in terms of possible savings. One way to reduce losses would be the proper use of databases. A joint project of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM) and NRC (Tribology laboratories at IMRI) has been initiated to create a factual database containing all relevant experience in the area of wear in the Canadian mining industry. As a first step, a prototype covering slurry pumps is being built. This should help to answer many questions, such as the number of people involved, interest from industry, cost vs benefits, etc.IntroductionTribology is concerned with the understanding of the mechanisms of friction, wear, and lubrication.Tribology is concerned with the correct use of materials for interacting solid surfaces, with the interaction of those surfaces with lubricants, with the chemistry, physics and use of lubricants and their additives. It is concerned with the reduction of friction and wear (or, in the case of belts, brakes, clutch plates, and similar devices, in achieving optimum friction with minimum wear) and is concerned with the avoidance of associated failures in machinery.Lubrication is usually the solution to a problem of friction and wear. Yet far from all the problems of friction and wear are solved by lubrication. The wear of grinding rods or shovel track pads can hardly be solved by lubrication, to name just two examples with which mining engineers will be familiar. There are indeed many situations of wear and friction where the surfaces in contact are unlubricated.In part, tribology is a matter of design. A major aspect, however, has to do with the choice of materials, to satisfy external constraints upon the component design or choice. The operating conditions for much industrial equipment, particularly in mining are, often very severe. The development of wear resistant materials, including materials which are applied as coatings, is clearly an important technology from the point of view of tribology."

"Platinum-group minerals (PGM) typically occur in such low concentrations that quantitative mineralogical evaluation is difficult or impossible. The FEI MLA system used by Vale Base Metals Technology Development has been successfully employed to produce large PGM data sets that are statistically robust. The MLA Sparse Phase Liberation mapping routine produces false colored images that accurately document mineral textures, including intergrowths between various platinum group minerals and between PGMs and other tellurides and sulfides. MLA PGM search results can be used in conjunction with mineral chemistry to calculate platinumgroup element distribution to minerals and the MLA PGM images can be used to produce model grade-recovery curves.INTRODUCTIONThe platinum-group minerals (PGM) found in Sudbury area deposits have been extensively catalogued and reviewed by many authors including, but not limited to: Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), Cabri and Laflamme (1984; 1976) and Cabri (1981). The PGM list currently used has 12 minerals summarized in Table 1. As noted by Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), platinum-group minerals in Sudbury are dominated by tellurides, bismuth-tellurides and arsenides, with an absence of platinum-group element (PGE) sulphides or ferro-platinum alloys such as tetraferroplatinum - PtFe."

"Construction of the Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan is well under way. Production is anticipated to begin in the first half of 2007. When in full production, the mine is projected to produce a net 18,000,000 pounds of U3O8 per annum from a high grade ore averaging approximately 20% U3O8.Water management was a major issue that required substantial effort in the Cigar Lake design. Not only is effluent quality controlled, a tight water balance to minimize effluent volume is also designed into processes in order to minimize environmental impact. This paper focuses on the water treatment process and water handling equipment, as well as the operating philosophies that will reduce fresh water consumption to a minimum. An overview of the mining and ore handling systems, as well as aspects of controlling water production from the ore formation and the mine development areas will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Cigar Lake ore body has proven and probable reserves that total 232 million pounds U3O8. Cigar Lake is the world’s largest undeveloped high-grade deposit. It is the second largest highgrade deposit surpassed only by the McArthur River deposit another Cameco - operated mine in the Saskatchewan Athabasca Basin. Cigar Lake is owned 50% by Cameco Corporation, 37% by AREVA (COGEMA Resources Inc.), 8% by Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Ltd. and 5% by TEPCO Resources Inc. When production starts in 2007, ground ore slurry from Cigar Lake will be shipped to the McClean Lake mill (owned by AREVA) some 80 km away. All of the Cigar Lake uranium will be leached from the ore at McClean Lake. During initial production ramp up, all uranium will be processed at McClean Lake to yellow cake (uranium oxide). After the average production has exceeded a 10 million pound per year rate, Cigar Lake uranium will begin to flow from the McClean Lake Mill to the Rabbit Lake Mill. At this point, subject to regulatory approval, 57% of the Cigar Lake uranium, in a uranium rich solution, will be transported to Rabbit Lake mill (owned by Cameco) for purification to yellow cake. A complete summary of the flow of uranium from the Cigar Lake ore body through to product at both McClean Lake and Rabbit Lake can be found in a recent paper titled “The Cigar Lake Project – Mining, Ore Handling and Milling” in the March 2004 issue of the CIM Bulletin. A complex network approach on a rough fracture is developed. In this manner, some hidden metric spaces (similarity measurements) between apertures profiles are set up and a general evolutionary network in two directions (in parallel and perpendicular to the shear direction) is constructed. Also, an algorithm (COmplex Networks on Apertures: CONA) is proposed in which evolving of a network is accomplished using preferential detachments and attachments of edges (based on a competition and game manner) while the number of nodes is fixed. Also, evolving of clustering coefficients and number of edges display similar patterns as well as are appeared in shear stress, hydraulic conductivity and dilation changes, which can be engaged to estimate shear strength distribution of asperities.

"A model for gold leaching was developed and implemented into a simulator. The simulator uses a description of the ore that is based on the mineral composition and precious metal content. The model accounts for the distribution of minerals and precious metals through the size intervals. An ore texture model based on precious metals and minerals grain sizes within the ore is used to predict the exposed surface of the species in the various size intervals. A model is proposed to predict the rate of dissolution of any species dissolution using the exposed surface, particle size, cyanide and oxygen concentrations, temperature, pH and agitation. The flow of slurry through a leaching tank is modelled using a parallel arrangement of perfect mixers to simulate a bypass and a Cholette-Cloutier mixer model. The simulator can be used for circuit optimization but was developed to provide an environment for learning the basic concepts of process analysis methods. Examples are given to illustrate the application of the simulator for planning tracer tests and sampling campaigns.INTRODUCTIONThe constant pressure to improve the operation of processes that are already close to optimum imposes to plant engineers to be aware of the available process analysis tools and to be able to use them to assess process operation and make a diagnosis to possible problems. Some of these tools are:•,Sampling the streams of a process;•,Data reconciliation;•,Analysis of mixing in reactors;•,Estimation of rate parameters;•,Optimal tuning and flow sheet modification;•,Automatic control and real time optimization.Although some of these tools are part of the curriculum of many university engineering programs, the students are not exposed to actual process analysis problems. In addition the complexity of the ore dressing processes compounded with unavoidable measurement errors and plant disturbances can discourage many motivated engineers. These factors often lead to an incomplete valorization of the collected data and a poor return on the investment associated with the sampling, testing and analysis of the samples.Simulators are readily available for process optimization (Yalcin and Shang, 2006) by allowing:•,The simulation of various flow sheet configurations;•,The simulation of a change of operating conditions;•,The simulation of various control strategies;•,The training of plant operators.However few simulators have been developed with the objective of providing an environment for training plant engineers and technicians to the use of tools for process analysis and optimisation."

The limestone reef reservoir at Swan Hills consists essentially of a "buildup" of successively smaller atoll-like layers. Precipitation of calcium carbonate within the lagoonal area of each layer essentially kept pace with growth of the outer organic lattice. Within the reef mass, six de-positional environments characterized by specific suites of fossils (or fossil fragments) and associated limestone textures are recognized as follows: ( 1) Aerated moderately agitated water of normal marine salinity (widespread shelf or submerged reef-built platform). Thamnopora-type corals, Amphipora, "pancake" stroma-toporoids, crinoids, articulate bra-chiopods, rare rugose cup corals, and ostracods occurs in light gray-buff skeletal microgranular limestone of low permeability. (2) Semi-stagnant quiet water of normal marine salinity (leeward side of reef). Crinoids, articulate brachio-pods, rare thamnopora-type corals, Amphipora, pancake and bulbous stromatoporoids, rugose cup corals, ostracods and gastropods occur in impermeable dark brown argillaceous skeletal calcilutite with thin black bituminous shale beds and rare dark chert nodules.

Environmental considerations are of increasing importance in determining the acceptability, schedule and cost of expansion ofCanada's uranium processing industry. Environmental considerations must be addressed in the early stages of facility planning. This results in a dilemma, as the process data needed to predict physical environmental impacts are not yet available from process design activities. Hence, a business risk is incurred if plant design is carried forward to meet these requirements prior to project (or site) approval. On the other hand, project scheduling normally mitigates against leaving process design engineering until such time as project approval is obtained. This paper examines the experience gained in Eldorado Nuclear's proposed expansion of refining capacity as viewed by an environmental engineering consultant. The history of the project and the relationship to process design functions in the two-year period prior to the Port Granby environmental hearings are reviewed. During the Port Granby public hearing, there was a consensus that normal operation of the proposed refinery could be successfully integrated with the site's natural environmental constraints. Moreover, the radiological impact from plant operations was demonstrated to be inconsequential. However, concerns were raised relating to plant upset and accident situations. These concerns are summarized. Process data requirements identified during the environmental hearings are discussed. Finally, the concerns for on-site burial of radioactive waste are reviewed. These concerns focussed on long-term stability of the waste in the presence ofgroundwater transport, erosion and glaciers. The AECB's position on waste management with regard to this project is reviewed in light ofthe implications for design.

"The Obuasi Mine of AngloGold Ashanti Limited has been operating the world’s largest Biooxidation Plant at its Sulfide Treatment Plant (STP) in Ghana, using the Gencor Biox® technology since February 1994. The Biox® technology was preferred to other alternative methods of treating refractory sulfide ores such as roasting, pressure oxidation and nitric acid leaching due to among other reasons, its lower capital and operating costs, reduced technical risk, relatively benign environmental impact and its ease of operation and maintenance in a remote location.STP has since commissioning succeeded in operating this technology successfully but not without some operational problems. The Plant has seen a number of upgrades and modifications in its circuits which were motivated by cost, operational and throughput constraints.The objective of this paper is therefore to highlight the mine’s experience in the treatment of its complex carbonaceous refractory sulfide gold ores with emphasis on plant operations and improvements such as the Biox® reactors expansion, flotation concentrate upgrade project and neutralization circuit modifications. The Biox® Plant operating cost is also discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Obuasi mine forms part of the AngloGold Ashanti Group of Gold Mines. It is located in the Adansi West District of the Republic of Ghana. The mine is primarily an underground operation, although some surface mining still takes place. Ore is processed by two main treatment plants: the Sulfide Treatment Plant (for underground ore) and the Tailings plant (for tailings reclamation operations). A third plant, the Oxide Plant, is used to batch-treat remnant opencast ore and stockpiles, of which there are adequate tonnages to keep the plant operational until 2008.Though reference is made in this paper to the Tailings and Oxide Treatment Plants, the main focus will be on the Sulfide Treatment Plant."

"Development of Barrick Gold’s Pierina gold mine in north-central Peru requires construction of a waste dump for disposal of nonore grade materials stripped from the open pit to expose the ore. The waste dump site is located near the open pit in a U-shaped valley that is underlain by thin colluvial and morainal soils with locally thick peats and glaciolacustrine deposits. Bedrock underlying the site consists of variably weathered volcanics. The site is subject to moderately high seasonal rainfall and significant seismicity. The geotechnical quality of the waste rock is highly variable, ranging from low-quality, degradable, soil-like materials containing appreciable quantities of silt and clay, to high-quality, hard, durable, blocky waste rock.A hybrid dump design concept was developed that requires in-pit segregation of highand low-quality waste, and selective placement of materials in the dump to maximize stability and enhance internal and subsurface drainage. The design includes a rock drain beneath the dump along the axis of the valley and a series of connected finger drains. Extensive peripheral diversions and stormwater control measures to inhibit infiltration of precipitation are also included.This paper discusses the unique challenges presented by the site and waste materials, the design methodology and stability analyses, and planned monitoring systems."

This paper studies the effect of binder type and content on the early age development of cemented paste backfill (CPB). The early age development of the mixtures is analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). These tests show that the early age development of CPB is sensitive to changes in the paste composition. The properties of the CPB depend on the cement content and hydration time. The quantity of hydration products increases with hydration time for all of the mixtures containing cement. However, the high cement content pastes (at least 50% PC) exhibit complete coverage of the PC grains and mine tailings by C-S-H, while the low cement content paste shows scattered coverage of the PC grains and mine tailings and a higher void ratio.

The Campo Morado precious-metal-bearing, volcanogenic massive sulphide district occurs in a Lower Cretaceous felsic volcanic sequence in a northerly trending belt in the Guerrero Terrane in northeastern Guerrero, Mexico. During upper Cretaceous to Early Tertiary greenschist-facies regional metamorphism, the rocks were deformed strongly into a northeast-verging fold-and-thrust belt. The deposits belong to a low-sulfidation, volcanogenic massive sulphide system formed in a subaqueous environment, and are of the siliciclastic type. Most are on the flanks of felsic domes or in adjacent basins and many are associated with heterolithic volcaniclastic rocks. The Reforma and possibly the El Rey massive sulphide deposits are interpreted to be overturned, and the Naranjo, El Largo, and Estrella de Oro deposits and the El Profundo occurrence to the south are upright. The G9 deposit and the La Lucha and San Rafael occurrences are in an over-thrust plate further to the southwest. In several of the deposits, zinc, lead, silver, and gold are concentrated near the stratigraphic top, and copper is concentrated near the stratigraphic base; copper also is concentrated in replacement bodies near the top of some domes. Major minerals are pyrite, quartz, ankerite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Gold and silver occur in argentian gold, and silver also occurs in tennantite/freibergite and galena. Underlying stockwork zones contain disseminated and vein quartz, pyrite, chlorite, and ankerite, with locally abundant chalcopyrite and/or sphalerite. Exploration since 2004 has enlarged greatly the El Largo and the high-grade G-9 deposits, and slightly enlarged the El Rey deposit. The cumulative in situ massive sulphides for the Reforma, Naranjo, El Rey, El Largo, and G9 deposits exceed 45 Mt.

"Asbestos tailings are a typical serpentine, hydrated magnesium silicate, consisting primarily of antigorite and a few per cent of unrecovered fibrous chrysotile. Serpentine has unique thermal properties in that dehydroxylating calcination at 600 to 700°C can yield an amorphous structure in which most of the magnesia is liberated from the original bond with silica and thereby rendered chemically active. The amount of activated magnesia can be quantified by selective leaching with a weak acid such as acetic acid. Many wet processes have been proposed to extract magnesium values from calcined or natural serpentine by means of various acids and their ammonium salts. However, the only commercial utilization of serpentine today is found in dry processes such as the production of fused magnesium phosphate fertilizer .The present paper reviews the physical chemistry of the dehydroxylation of serpentine and also various wet and dry processes in order to provide a general view regarding the chemical transformation of asbestos tailings.IntroductionAsbestos fibers occur as chrysotile, a serpentine polymorph. More than nine tenths of mined asbestos ores consist of massive non-fibrous serpentine, primarily the polymorph antigorite, which is discarded as tailings after fiber extraction. For many decades, Quebec has been a world leader in the production of asbestos fibers. As a result, colossal tonnages of serpentine have accumulated in the Eastern Townships'!'. Serpentine minerals are found in large deposit s throughout the world, and significant research efforts have been made, particularly in Japan and the USSR, mostly in attempts to extract magnesia or silica values therefrom.The chemical composition of serpentine (chrysotile and antigorite) may be ideally expressed as Mg3Si2Os(OH). which corresponds to 43.7% MgO and 43.3% SiO2. Natural serpentines often contain a few per cent of Ni-bearing magnetite and other impurities, and therefore the contents of MgO and Si02are both about 40% or lower.Serpentine (hydrated magnesium silicate) is virtually insoluble in weak acids. However, when dehydroxylated under controlled conditions, ' it decomposes to an amorphous state in which magnesia and silica are isolated and chemically active. The magnesia so activated is readily soluble in weak acids. This unique characteristic of calcined serpentine, first discovered in 1942,, has since attracted the attention of innumerable researchers, whence many processes have been proposed."

"A practical new test has been developed for SAG hardness determination. Using two kilogram samples of minus one inch diamond drill core or crushed muck samples, the Starkey SAG Test has been shown to give accurate predictive information which directly relates to on-stream SAG mill performance. Typical results and test criteria are discussed in the paperAchievements to date include:• Identification of hardness profiles and the location of hard and soft zones in a large ore body.• Accurate prediction of the hardness of a bulk sample by using an adjacent diamond drill hole.• Derivation of a plotted curve relating pilot plant power to laboratory relative hardness.• Demonstration that for every test done to date, the Starkey SAG Test produced a product size distribution identical to that produced in a pilot plant or full scale plant SAG operation.This test can now be used for blast hardness monitoring and short term control of mine production in existing plants and for identifying the proper locations for bulk samples in new projects. In addition, new SAG mill design can now be rationalized in a low cost way to eliminate unforeseen production shortfalls.IntroductionThis paper is presented to introduce the Starkey SAG Test, a practical new laboratory tool for measuring the relative hardness of small ore samples in a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) environment. The test was first designed for use on diamond drill core samples during the prefeasibility stage of new mining projects, to provide new information about the ore body at reasonable cost. It is a new tool and does not replace existing pilot plant test requirements.The test will also be useful for throughput prediction in existing SAG plants by assisting in short and long term mine planning, where forecasting of metal grades and milled tonnage is used to control mine profitability. "The Preissac-Lacorne batholith is composed of suites of early metaluminous calc-alkalic gabbroic to granodioritic intrusives, three late peraluminous monzogranite plutons and numerous Li, Be and Ta-bearing granitic pegmatites. The Lacorne pluton is dominated by biotite and biotite + muscovite monzogranites containing abundant Be and Ta-bearing granitic pegmatites (40-80% volume). The pluton is surrounded by swarms of unzoned or poorly zoned spodumene-rich pegmatite dykes. The La Motte pluton is composed of biotite monzogranites, biotite+ muscovite monzogranites and rare muscovite + garnet monzogranites. Li, Be and Ta-bearing pegmatites are less abundant than in the Lacorne pluton and are commonly associated with molybdenite bearing quartz-muscovite-K-feldspar veins. In the Preissac pluton, muscovite + garnet monzogranites and muscovite + biotite + garnet monzogranites are the dominant rock types. The pluton rarely contains granitic pegmatites and these are generally barren. However, numerous molybdenite bearing quartz and quartz-feldspar-muscovite hydrothermal veins are observed.Li, Be andTa-bearing pegmatites display a crude spatial zonation around their parent monzogranites. Spodumene-rich pegmatites are generally unzoned or poorly zoned and are confined to the surrounding metasedimentary or metavolcanic rocks or crop out in the early gabbroic to granodioritic intrusives surrounding the monzogranites. Ta and Be-bearing pegmatites are usually concentrated towards the margins of their parent monzogranites. The highly fractionated nature ofmonzogranites (high Rb/Sr, low K?Rb, Ba?Sr, Zr/Nb ... ), their peraluminous composition (corundum normative and muscovite bearing) and the numerous occurrences of Ta and Be-bearing pegmatite dykes represent important criteria for the exploration of fertile granites."
