"The Algoma (or Blind River) uranium district is centred in an area of some 600 square miles on the north shore of Lake Huron, about half way between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (Figure 1). Its favourable location, adjoining the main provincial highway and Canadian Pacific Railway line which follow the lake shore, has contributed greatly to its rapid development.By Canadian standards, the district has long attracted geological attention, beginning with the discovery of the Bruce mine in 1846. It has been repeatedly prospected at intervals since then, chiefly for copper and nickel but also for lead, zinc, cobalt, silver, iron, and gold. Numerous discoveries have prompted the suggestion by Yates (13) and others that one metal-logenic province embraces the entire mineralized area from Michigan through Sudbury and Cobalt.Geological mapping was initiated by Murray in 1847, and the area attracted much interest as the type locality of the Huronian, the correlation and stratigraphic position of which are still not entirely agreed on. Subsequent contributors to the geological literature of the area have been very numerous, and the bibliography at the end of this paper includes only some of the more modern reports.The history of uranium in this part of Ontario also dates from 1847, when J. L. LeConte identified as uranium-bearing a pitchblende-like mineral which he named ""coracite"". The specimens came from Theano Point, north of Sault Ste. Marie. In 1948 a search for the source of these specimens led to the discovery of the Camray uranium field. Occurrences in this field consist of numerous small and locally rich pitchblende-bearing fractures, within or along the contacts of diabase dykes cutting Archaean granite and gneiss.None of the showings explored proved large enough to justify production, but they stimulated prospecting of adjoining areas and thus led to the Algoma discoveries.The first find of radioactive conglomerate in place was made in 1949 in Long township, and it was partially staked as the Fisher-Audette-Breton property. Rusty, overgrown rock-cuts indicated that the pyrite-bearing conglomerate had been investigated years before, probably during searches for base metals and gold. Examinations were made at this time by a number of geologists, including the senior author. In spite of high radioactivity, sampling returned only negligible uranium. The claims were allowed to lapse and the showings reverted to obscurity."

In this paper we describe a mathematical model of the magnetic field and magnetohydrodynamic processes simulation in aluminum reduction cells developed in St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University, Russia. The model includes: (a) calculation of the currents in the busbar system and inside the aluminum cell construction elements including cathode and anode structures, aluminum and electrolyte layers; (b) magnetic field simulation using the integral equation method; ( c) investigation of the magnetohydrodynamic characteristics on the basis of a shallow-water approach. The developed model was used to investigate operational characteristics of the different industrial aluminum cells. Calculated magnetic field distributions and MHD stability parameters were compared with the available experimental information; the comparison demonstrated a reasonably good agreement.

"Recently, the arsenic grade in copper ores has been increasing year by year. Arsenic bearing minerals (enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13)) coexist with typical copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). The removal of arsenic from copper ores that contain relatively high arsenic content is essential due to its adverse impact on the environment and the resulting economic consequences. In this study, arsenic removal and dissolution behaviour of Cu and As from enargite (Cu3AsS4) were investigated using ferric sulphate (Fe2(SO4)3) solutions containing sodium chloride under high pressure oxidation conditions. The effects of numerous parameters including the concentration of Fe2(SO4)3 and NaCl, temperature, total pressure, leaching time and particle size were studied while other variables such as pulp density and stirring speed were fixed at 100 g/L and 750 rpm. The results showed that more than 60% of the copper was dissolved in a 0.1 M ferric sulphate solution under the high pressure oxidative conditions, whereas the leaching rate of arsenic was less than 20%. SEM observation revealed that elemental sulphur was deposited on the surface of enargite forming a passivation layer and the residue was agglomerated. Those phenomena may cause a decrease in the copper leaching rate. It was found that more than 80% of copper was dissolved in the ferric sulphate solution in the presence of 0.34 M sodium chloride under the conditions optimized, whereas the dissolution of arsenic in the mixture did not exceed 2%. XRD analysis of the solid residues from the leaching experiments used ferric sulphate and mixtures of ferric sulphate and sodium chloride showed arsenic to be present as scorodite (FeAsO4).INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been an increase of the arsenic (As) content of copper ores due to the gradual depletion of high grade copper ores. In some copper deposits, arsenic occurs in the form of minerals such as enargite and tennantite. The removal of arsenic in ores containing copper is critical to the production of pure copper and the management of the environmental challenges caused by the smelting process. Due to the environmental risk caused by arsenic emission and the deteriorated quality of the copper product, smelting of enargite concentrates is not an effective method for the extraction of copper (Padilla et al., 2010; Safarzadeh et al., 2014; Long et al., 2012). Therefore, a number of studies have been carried out to develop arsenic removal technologies from copper ores using various methods such as hydrometallurgy (Curreli et al., 2009; Tongamp et al. 2010), pyrometallurgy (Dalewski., 1999; Padilla. et al, 2012) and bio-oxidation (Ehrlich, 1964; Sasaki et al., 2010). Several hydrometallurgical leaching processes like sulphuric acid, alkaline sodium sulphide and sodium sulphate and ferric sulphate leaching have been developed to treat enargite ores and concentrates. "Los Bronces had two ROM dump leach operations designated Leach I and Leach II. Leach I was commissioned in 1998 and stopped in 2014 due to the mine requirements. Leach II plant, commissioned in early 2002, was built to treat around 700 million tons of marginal ROM ore averaging 0.45 % total copper. The mineralogy of this material was estimated to be 70% chalcopyrite, 20% chalcocite/covellite and the balance oxides.The original electrowinning plant design capacity for copper production was nominal 19,500 tonnes per year at a current density of 276 A/m2 and a current efficiency of 92%. Presently, Los Bronces San Francisco plant typically operates at current densities between 390 and 440 A/m2, much higher than the average in the industry, with current efficiencies around 93% and a maximum copper cathodes production of 37,200 tonnes per year.In order to accomplish these achievements, a number of modifications in the process conditions, in the cell hardware and in the operational procedures have been implemented. In the first case, the specific flowrate, copper concentration and temperature of the electrolyte were modified to accommodate the operational requirements facilitating the increased current density. Associated with the cell hardware, a six cells expansion was added, upgraded equipotential inner cell busbars were installed and the cross section of the cathode hanger bars was enlarged for increased current carrying capacity. Documented operational procedures like short circuit detection and cathode weight control were improved.The modifications implemented and the results obtained are discussed in this paper.INTRODUCTIONLos Bronces Division of Anglo American Chile is located up in the Andes Mountains, northeast of Santiago. It had two cathode plants, Los Bronces at an altitude of 3500 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.) commissioned in 1998 and closed in 2014 and San Francisco at an altitude of 2800 m.a.s.l. and in operation since 2002.The process is leaching run off mine (ROM) low grade copper sulphide ore in dumps. The mineralogy of this material was estimated to be 70% chalcopyrite, 20% chalcocite/covellite and the balance oxides. The average grade is 0.45% total copper (Cut).At Los Bronces dump, Leach I plant, the pregnant leach solution (PLS) was collected and stored in an underground reservoir. From there, it was fed to a solvent extraction plant with a series-parallel configuration in two extraction stages and one stripping stage. The electrolyte produced was fed to the electrowinning plant having 30 cells and 60 cathodes per cell. Maximum capacity of this plant was 12,000 tonnes per year (tpy)."

"The microstructures of AlSi10Mg foundry alloy in permanent mould (PM) and high pressure vacuum die (HPVD) castings were analyzed and compared. The as-cast microstructures of two castings mainly consisted of eutectic silicon particles, primary Mg2Si and Fe-rich intermetallic phases. The surface layer in HPVD castings, which has a unique feature and different structures, was carefully characterized. The dimension variation of microstructural phases along the cross section in PM samples is less than that in HPVD samples, although the size of microstructural phases in PM samples was much larger than that in HPVD samples. The mechanical properties of PM and HPVD samples were evaluated on as-cast and T6-treated conditions. The tensile properties of HPVD castings are remarkable better than those of PM castings on the as-cast condition. The T6 heat treatment greatly improves the tensile strength of PM castings while it has limited impact on the tensile strength of HPVD castings.INTRODUCTION The AlSi10Mg alloys are widely applied to the high pressure die casting (HPD) and high pressure vacuum die casting (HPVD). In the HPD process, the melt is injected into the die cavity under a high speed (30–50 m/s in the gate velocity for aluminum alloys), and solidified under a high pressure (up to 200 MPa in the cavity) and with a high cooling rate (up to ~103 Ks–1) (Gourlay, Laukli & Dahle, 2007; Ji, Wang, Watson & Fan, 2013). This results in a unique microstructure feature that is different to other casting processes under gravity. One major concern in HPD castings is porosity due to trapped air in the cavity (Ji et al., 2013), which seriously restricts the application of a heat treatment on the improvement of mechanical prosperities because of the formation of blisters on casting surfaces. For the process improvement, the high pressure vacuum die casting was developed in 1980s (Uchida, 2009). In this process, the melt is injected into the die cavity under reduced pressure (vacuum), which greatly reduces gas porosity in castings due to effectively avoiding the trapped air. Consequently, HPVD castings are heat-treatable without the formation of blisters on castings surface during heat treatment. The HPVD process has been widely applied to produce high quality structural castings in recent years attributed to reliable vacuum system development (Uchida, 2009). However, the microstructure features of HPVD castings are not systemically characterized yet."

In order to maximize the recovery of ore in variably dipping ore zones of moderate width, cemented backfill is normally placed to serve as structural support. With the intention of saving on costs, backfill of low cement content can be used, which are often supported by a sillmat of higher strength. The stability of the low cement backfill face, exposed during adjacent mining, must be carefully studied to provide very effective, safe and economic mining operations. Improper design of these stope support structures may result in fill mass failure resulting in relaxation and failure of the stope walls, with consequent losses of production, ore dilution, and in safety problems. This paper presents a study conducted to assess fill performance during adjacent pillar mining and to provide a comprehensive understanding of backfill behaviour, the failure modes that may occur and the consequences to production, ore dilution and to safety problems, and accurately predict their stability. The design study investigated the effects of stope width and height, orebody geometry and inclination, and wall roughness on the stability of cemented backfill during adjacent pillar mining. Fill properties used were based on paste fill specimens cured for 28 days. Paste fill performances were assessed based on analytical and numerical modeling studies for the different mining conditions. Analytical modeling was carried out using limiting equilibrium analysis and numerical modeling was carried out using FLAC3D. The modeling results suggested that, for stopes that are inclined with smooth wall rock conditions, backfill failure, driven by the fill self-weight, has minimum dependency on the binder content and is reduced by resisting forces developed on the footwall-fill contact. For inclined stopes with rough wall rock conditions, wall roughness contributes significantly to the stability of the backfill during adjacent pillar mining. The analytical modeling approach was demonstrated to be useful in providing some approximate parameters for predicting the behaviour of paste fill exposed faces during adjacent mining, but cannot predict the mode or mechanisms of failure. Numerical modeling not only assess the stability behaviour of paste fill free faces, but also is able to provide a better idea of paste fill failure modes and possible failure mechanisms. The depth of failure and the potential for instability for a simulated stope filled with paste fill can be predicted, and may be useful in estimating the mass of material that could possibly fail and ore dilution levels.

Due to the high pressures involved in the hydroforming process, friction and lubrication play an important role and can affect formability of the material. Tubes of A1Mg3.5Mn aluminum alloy, of 76.2 mm (3 inch) outside diameter and 2-mm thickness were considered in this study. Three kinds of lubricants, Al070, Hydrodraw711 and water, were applied to the tubes and tubes were hydroformed to burst in a square shape die cavity. The key process parameters were recorded during the tests. An in-house Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) damage-based material model, implemented in LS-DYNA, was used to model the process and predict the formability of this material. The applied axial loads and internal pressures recorded during the tests were used in the computations. The effect of different types of elements (solid and shell) with different constitutive models (von Mises and GTN models) in predicting the strain distribution is studied. The GTN damage-based material showed a good ability to capture necking and displacement histories in this process. Both predicted and measured results showed that the lubricant with lower coefficient of friction can effectively increase the comer expansion.

"The general geology of the Great Bear Lake area has been described by; D. F. Kidd in the Summary Report of the Geological Survey for 1932. A brief description of the Eldorado mine was prepared by C. S. Lord for Memoir 230; Mineral Industry of the Northwest Territories; published by the Geological Survey in 1941. Recently; a detailed geological examination of the mine area has been initiated by the Geological Survey and; under A. W. Jolliffe's leadershif; J. D. Bateman; H. B. Thurber; and M. Feniak have prepared a number of maps and reports; as yet unpublished. Detailed mapping of the mine has been carried out since August; 1943; by A. W. Esty.Kidd has shown that, in the largely granitic country along the east side of Great Bear lake, the Echo Bay district is one of several underlain by older rocks . These he has divided into the Echo Bay and Cameron Bay groups. The former are strongly altered sediments, .porphyries, and lavas; the latter and younger group is predominantly sedimentary and far less altered. Associated with the granite, which everywhere intrudes the sediments and volcanics, are earlier differentiates. Later than all these rocks are various basic intrusives, collectively termed diabase. All the rocks are of Precambrian age."

Eighty feet of overburden, thirty feet consisting of fine, water-bearing sands, was encountered during the construction of a shaft collar for Chimo Gold Mines Limited at its Louvicourt, Quebec, property. This paper describes the excavation and construction methods used on the project. Open-cut methods, a sheet pile cofferdam, chemical grouting and special blasting methods were used during excavation. Concrete placement was hampered in the lower portion by a heavy water flow, and aided in the upper portion by an unusual method of form bracing. Plant and • pum11ing facilities are also described.

Air is the gaseous substance that envelopes the earth and forms its atmosphere. It is remarkable in the constancy of its composition; for while this is being continually changed as the result of the respiration of men and animals, and by addition of gases arising from organic changes and the products of combustion, it is ever being brought back to normal and the proper balance restored by the processes of plant and vegetable life. Nature sees to it that the air in which we live and breathe is kept purified. This does not apply to the air in a coal mine, where there are no natural forces to change and make use of the different gases formed or evolved, and where mechanical ventilation is the only effective means of keeping the air pure. The atmosphere consists of oxygen and nitrogen, not in the combined state but merely mixed. By volume, the composition is: oxygen, 21 percent, nitrogen, 79 percent, there being included with the latter small quantities of such substances as water vapour, carbon dioxide, nitric acid, ammonia, ozone, argon, neon, and organic gases. Of the two principal gases which form air, oxygen alone supports life. When air is inhaled into the lungs the oxygen is absorbed by the blood, which carries it through the body to nourish and energize it. Exhaled air consists of water vapour and about 4 per cent carbon dioxide, with from 16 1/2 to 17 per cent oxygen and 79 per cent nitrogen; the oxygen alone having been drawn on to any considerable extent.

"UNTIL the last few years, the collieries of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, while highly mechanized as to the cutting and transportation of the coal, still relied on the hand-loading of coal from the seam onto face conveyors. In these circumstances it was possible to assure that no large proportion of extraneous materials would be loaded with the coal, and the product could be quite well cleaned for the market by screening and hand-picking.Within the past few years, however, the Company has introduced an intensive programme of mechanization which will result in the virtual elimination of hand-loading .of coal. It has been the experience of other producers that mechanical loading inevitably leads to a very large increase in the amount of impurities in the product. This is occasioned by the fact that, at least up to the present, all types of loading machines have relied on the coal being broken from the seam by under-cutting and shooting. In this operation, a certain amount of roof and pavement material inevitably becomes mixed with the coal and, since selective loading is impossible with a loading machine, all this foreign material is loaded out with the product."

"A test to determine the amount of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given; possible uses are discussed. A case study of how the technology was used at Hemlo Gold Mines is presented.IntroductionUsing gravity to supplement either flotation or cyanidation is a well established practice in the gold industry. It differs from most recovery circuits in that most of the gold recovered by gravity would be recovered in any case by the circuit downstream, be it flotation or cyanidation. The economic justification of gravity is therefore based on small margins (for example. a net smelter return of gravity gold of 99%, as opposed to 94% by flotation). It was easily demonstrated when either flotation or cyanidation were relatively inefficient processes, and labour costs low (as gravity can be labour intensive). Over the past thirty years, the advent of better flotation machines (flash, column, high capacity), more effective collectors, and better control systems has increased flotation's metallurgical performance, thereby decreasing the incentive for gravity recovery. Cyanidation technology has undergone similar changes, with the advent of activated carbon, oxygen and lead nitrate addition, and improved impeller design.Today, gravity could remain an attractive option only inasmuch as it can be implemented with very low capital and operating costs. This has resulted in a relative shift away from gold gravity recovery (except for alluvial deposits), in the seventies and eighties. For example, as of the early nineties, gold gravity recovery has disappeared from the typical South African flow sheet. The advent of the Knelson Concentrator, at the beginning of the eighties, foreshadowed a resurgence of gravity recovery, as gold's grinding and classification behaviour (Banisi, Laplante and Marois, 1991) makes it possible to achieve adequate gold recoveries with very simple, Knelson based, gravity circuits (Laplante et al., 1994).Consider for example the Hemlo recovery circuit, made of a single 61 cm x 122 cm (2' x 4') screen, an automated 76 cm (30"") Knelson feeding a Gemeni table, to produce a 70-80% Au concentrate which accounts for approximately one fourth of the gold production (about 3 million grams per year). The low capital and operating costs make it possible to justify the gravity circuit on the basis of savings in other operating costs (e.g. fewer carbon stripping and reactivation cycles). Any improvements in recovery, which would at Hemlo be difficult to measure, would be additional benefits. Such a circuit is rapidly becoming a standard in Canadian and Australian operations.The justification for installing a gravity circuit must be first based on an estimate of how much gold it will recover (irrespective of what the potential benefits are). This is a function of the nature of the gravity circuit to be installed; however, Knelson circuits, by their very simplicity and efficiency, limit the options. This leaves the amenability of the ore to gravity recovery as the single most important parameter. Various approaches can be used to characterize this response (Woodcock, 1993). Thorium is frequently the main radioactive element in rare earth ores and is a resource that can potentially substitute for uranium. Thorium must be separated from rare earths in order to obtain products with low radioactivity. There are abundant resources of thorium in the rare earth ores in China, especially in Baiyunebo mixed ores. As an associated element coexisting in rare earth ores, thorium is, or can be, separated from rare earth concentrate, iron concentrate, as well as from waste water and slag to achieve recovery of thorium. The methods of separation include ion exchange resin, liquid-liquid extraction, and liquid-solid extraction. TBP extraction has been the main method applied to separate thorium by domestic and foreign scholars. This paper presents a comparison of different processes for the separation of thorium from rare earth ores, especially Baiyunebo mixed ores, single bastnaesite and monazite ore, and provides suggestions for the future recovery of thorium resources.

"Unaltered biotites from three samples of monzonite and gabbro from the Copper Mountain stock and a single sample from a pegmatic biotite-chalcopyrite vein cutting the Triassic Wolf Creek formation have a mean K-A age of 193±7 m.y. These data support a suggestion based on geological evidence that Copper Mountain ore deposits are related genetically to the Copper Mountain stock.A cogenetic mineral pair (biotite and clinopyroxene) from a sample of sericitized and chloritized monzonite of the Copper Mountain stock have identical K-A ages of 150 m.y., which probably represents a time of wide-spread, post-ore, hydrothermal alteration. This alteration is believed to be related genetically to a group of post-ore intrusions known as the ""mine dykes,"" suggesting that they also have an age of 150 m.y."

Electronic Product and Process Management [EPPM] systems provide the capability to establish and map information flow between different parties in a construction project as well as model project processes. Much of the information relating to processes and their structure, the actors that operate them, and the data associated with each instance of a process is encapsulated within workflows. The wealth of information contained in an EPPM system can be exploited to extract knowledge that can provide significant cost benefits to construction companies. Workflows provide an ideal medium for the capture of knowledge over the course of a project lifecycle. We demonstrate how this knowledge may then be used to analyze workflows and determine metrics that establish the suitability of workflows to construction processes. We present a conceptual approach to measure the performance of a workflow, its constituent components and evolution, which may be used to lay the foundation for establishing paragon workflows suited to classes of construction activities.

Abstract-Plants have a remarkable ability to select, use and store metals derived from the substrate. Each species is unique in its requirements for and tolerances to the full spectrum of chemical elements in the Periodic Table. Studies to define the chemical characteristics of common trees and shrubs of the temperate forest are providing insight to their use for exploration, i.e., biogeochemical exploration. Examples of surveys over gold deposits in British Columbia show the effectiveness of sampling various tissues from different species in a range of biogeoclimatic environments. At the Nickel Plate mine in the Montane-Spruce zone, outer bark of Lodgepole pine was effective in defining a large area of metal enrichment; at the Carolin mine in the zone of Coastal Mountain Hemlock, analysis of twigs of western hemlock and Pacific silver fir provided an exploration target considerably larger than that defined by lithogeochemistry; at the Mount Washington gold deposit in the Mountain Hemlock zone, twigs of mountain hemlock and rhododendron were used to outline the mineralization; and in the Interior Douglas-fir zone at the QR deposit analysis of Douglas-fir tops collected by helicopter provided a rapid and effective method of identifying a gold-rich area.

Applying Friction Stir Welding in an industrial environment requires knowledge about the robustness of the welding process against imperfections in the joint line resulting from production deviations of the parts to be joined or from improper clamping devices. In this work the influence of gaps on the weld quality of friction stir welded butt joints of the aluminum alloy EN AW-5083-H111 is investigated in detail using the method Design of Experiments. As independent input variables, the rotation speed, the feed rate, the tilt angle, the lateral tool offset and the gap width were chosen. Tensile strength was selected as a measure for the joint quality. Moreover, the fundamental response variables of the FSW process, such as weld temperature, axial force and spindle torque, were recorded and integrated in the empirical process model derived by regression analysis. It was found that each response variable decreases with increasing gap width, whereas the largest impact was identified for the axial force and the temperature at the weld surface. In order to improve the joint strength for a given gap width, increasing the rotation speed and the tilt angle or lowering the feed rate, respectively, proved to be a suitable approach. However, interactions between the tilt angle and the rotation speed have to be considered.

"This paper describes the current practices and experiences, and discusses design parameters concerning slurry pumping at Inco Metals Company in the Sudbury District. It deals mainly with the long tailing and concentrate lines. In the Ontario Division, it operates 13 mines, 5 mills, a smelter, an iron ore plant and 3 refineries, all engaged in the mining and recovery of nickel and copper. This paper describes the slurry pumping practices in the mills of the Ontario Division.The PumpsWe have in our Sudbury area mills most of the available types of slurry pumps, in sizes from one inch up to twelve inches, a total of about 400 pumps. The rubber-lined, horizontal shaft pump is; most numerous. However, for certain applications, the hard-metal pump is essential, and is becoming more popular for general mill service. Two types of vertical shaft pumps are used. There are a few diaphragm pumps on small thickeners, but the larger thickeners have centrifugal pumps either directly connected to the under-flow or with one pump handling several gravity underflows. We have not used piston or plunger pumps in our mills."

Due to the detrimental effect of platelet iron-rich intermetallics on mechanical properties (particularly ductility) in cast alloys, it has been essential to transform these phases into Chinese script morphology. In the present work, the effects of Mn and/or Si addition and cooling rate on the phase transformation of the iron-rich intermetallics in 206 cast alloys with different Fe contents ranging from 0.15 % to 0.5 % were systematically investigated. The results obtained showed that platelet ß-Fe and Al3(FeMn), Chinese script a-Fe, Alm(FeMn) and Al6(FeMn) can be observed in the 206 cast alloys, depending on the Fe, Mn and Si contents as well as the cooling rate. It was found that the addition of either Mn or Si favors the formation of Chinese script iron-rich intermetallics but inhibits the precipitation of the platelet phases. In addition, the combined addition of both Mn and Si has a synergistic effect on the phase transformation. Furthermore, there exists a critical cooling rate to effectively suppress the formation of platelet iron-rich intermetallics for a given alloy. The threshold cooling rate decreases with increasing Fe, Mn and Si contents. Casting process maps are established to correlate the intermetallics precipitated with alloy chemistry and cooling rate for 206 cast alloys containing various Fe levels.
