Introduction Classified equipment originally installed in 1923 in the Britannia mill consisted of eighteen Model C Dorr Simplex classifiers, each in closed circuit with a pebble-mill. These machines were only three feet wide and of light construction, so that their raking capacities were necessarily limited, the maximum being about 20 tons per hour for each classifier. On conversion from pebble-mills to ball-mills, in 1924, attempts to increase circulating loads with higher rake speeds resulted only in overflowing a coarser product to the flotation cells. The elevator type of classifier was developed locally in 1935 and during that year two units, each having a sand carrying capacity of from 30 to 40 tons per hour, were installed. With such loads, a material increase in the grinding capacities of the ball-mills was noticed, and, after further development work on the elevator classifier, fifteen of the small Dorr classifiers were replaced by units of this type, capable of handling approximately 75 tons of sand per hour, with later alterations increasing this capacity to well over 100 tons per hour. In the meantime, the three remaining ball-mills had been placed in circuit with Dorr FX classifiers, one of which was six feet wide and the others five feet wide. Impartial and exhaustive tests conducted on the Dorr FX versus the elevator classifier showed the average results on these machines at Britannia to be substantially the same. A large amount of testing was carried on to determine the effect of circulating load on the output of the grinding units. This work indicated a rapid increase in the grinding rate as the ball-mill feed increased up to about 60 tons per hour, after which a relatively slow increase took place up to 100 tons per hour. No benefits were derived from higher circulating loads. A 300 to 500 per cent circulating load, depending on the nature of the ore treated, is considered to be within the economical range for the grinding of Britannia ores.

AS is well known, there are large and valuable deposits of coal in British Columbia, both on the mainland and on Vancouver island. These deposits are widely distributed over the Province. The chief sources of supply on the mainland are found in the Fernie and Princeton-Nicola districts and on Vancouver island in the Comox and Nanaimo districts. The coals range from a very high quality bituminous coal to lignite. On the Upper Skeena river there is said to be a very large deposit of anthracite or semi-anthracite, but this field has not been developed. Coal was first discovered in British Columbia on the north end of Vancouver island in the year 1835, but it was not until 1852 that coal mining was seriously undertaken by the Hudson's Bay Company at Nanaimo, where mining has been carried on continuously ever since that date. The production of coal in the Province continued to increase until the year 1910, when the annual output reached its peak at 3,100,000 tons and a total of 7,800 men were employed in the industry. Since 1910, the production has dropped steadily until, in 1934, only 1,347,000 tons of coal were produced and less than 3,000 men were employed. This continued decrease in production has in no way been caused by lack of coal reserves. It has been due entirely to curtailment of markets. I do not propose to discuss coal mining practice in British Columbia, where we have all sorts of mining conditions, including submarine mining. There is no lack of coal supplies for either industrial or domestic purposes, nor is there likely to be any shortage of coal in the Province for many generations. We have our mining troubles, which increase the cost of production, but there are no insuperable difficulties to prevent the extraction of a large and increasing supply of coal. Our main difficulty-in fact our only serious difficulty-is to find a market for our output, and we must consider means which can be evolved not only to conserve our existing markets but also to expand them, at any rate within the boundaries of Canada. I will therefore confine my remarks chiefly to the all-important factor of Markets for our coal.

The quality and durability of asphalted roads strongly depends on the final step in the road construction process; the profiling and compaction of the fresh spread asphalt. During compaction machine operators continuously make decisions on how to proceed with the compaction accounting for project specific aspects as: ambient conditions, road geometry, roller type, asphalt mixture characteristics and behavior of other machines. In discussions over quality improvement in road construction it is often suggested to robotize rollers. To operate such robots would of course require operational strategies and routines. The reality of this moment is that these operational strategies and routines are not documented. To identify the existing best working practices and, ultimately, to proceed with developing automated robotized compactors, the knowledge of machine operators should at first be explored and described in a formalized way. Unfortunately operators have difficulty verbalizing their expertise. Observation of behavior, as machine movement patterns, could be helpful to extract the operational strategies, but such observations are time and labor consuming. To overcome this burden we developed a Virtual Reality (VR) environment. In this VR environment operators perform compaction virtually, and their operational choices are traced and analysed. This paper describes this VR development and explains how it helps in following machine operators and extracting their (tacit) professional knowledge. The road geometry and the working conditions are visually represented; the operators show - rather than explain - how they would proceed with the compaction process in the given conditions. Movements of virtual machines are documented, analysed, visualised and discussed. This VR approach is expected to contribute to learning, to more formal description of operational strategies; stepping stones towards compaction algorithms for roller robotisation.

"Flotation is possible when the forces operating between a bubble and the attached particle are properly balanced. There are many forces operating in the bubble-particle aggregate. The magnitude, location and direction of the forces depend on the type of process. The simplest arrangement in flotation is when a spherical bubble is attached to a spherical particle and both are immersed in water. In such a system there are four essential forces which shape the stability of the bubble-particle aggregate. They are excess pressure and interfacial solid/liquid, solid/gas and liquid/gas forces. A proper analysis and balance of the size, location and direction of these four principal forces lead to a general equation delineating the stability of the spherical particle–attached bubble system. Specific cross sections of the system and solution of the general equation lead to different relationships including the Young formula as well as the well-known geometrical relation between contact angle, particle and bubble radiuses. The arrangement of forces in the proposed graphical representation of the Young law is different from that presently used in literature for a bubble attached to an unmovable solid particle. Many real solid/liquid/gas systems are more complex due to the presence of additional forces which change the regular curvature of the liquid/gas interface leading to advancing and receding contact angles.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous papers (Athukorallage, Aulisa, Iyer & Zhang, 2015; Chau, Bruckard, Koh & Nguyen, 2009; Drzymala, 1994; Lubarda, 2012; Pellicer, Manzanares & Mafe, 1995; Wang, Cui, Zhou, Xu, Sun, & Zhu, 2014; Young, 1804) and books (Davies & Rideal, 1963; Defay & Prigogine, 1966; Lee, 2013; Lyklema, 2000) dealing with the solid/liquid/gas system. Many of them concern the three involved phases having the shape of a sphere or spherical cap and the formed contact angle. The contact angle is usually measured through the liquid phase and can be either smaller or greater than 90o. The essential part of these publications is a graphical representation of the system with the Young equation shown as a result of balance of only three forces that is the excess Gibbs (or Helmholz) free energy per unit area of the three involved interfaces (Davies & Rideal, 1963; Defay & Prigogine, 1966; Israelachvili, 1985) (Figs. 1a-c). "A hydrostatic elevation difference meter has been developed for use in measuring elevations along gravity traverses. Elevations of stations 100 feet apart can be obtained at a rate of 1/2 mile per hour and to an accuracy better than 1/3 foot. This can be done along traverses which have not been cut and chained. The instrument is durable, lightweight and constructed of materials which will withstand any temperature encountered in field work.It is believed that this device will more than double the rate at which gravity surveys over mining prospects can be carried out."

It was to be expected that the convening of the first Empire Mining Congress in June, 1924 in the city of London would turn men's thoughts very definitely to the question of exploring the mineral resources within the British Empire, the examining of her strength and her weakness in mineral material, and the consideration of steps that might advisedly be taken to strengthen her trade in minerals. That expectation was in part realized, though in the British way of presenting the case, and permitting the inferences to be drawn by implication. The opening address by the President of the Congress, to whom the Empire meant so much, gave a résumé of the contributions to the mining industry which were being made by the constituent parts of the Empire. The papers from the Institutes in Australasia, South Africa and Canada provided the details of resources and practice: while the individual contributions to the proceedings dealt with those phases of the mineral industry which are fundamental to the economic strength of British people, or to the health and well-being of the workers. While the subject matter thus presented was British mineral resources, and while the first consideration was the co-ordination and co-operation of British enterprise throughout the world, there emerged very clearly the wider viewpoint that the discussions had to do with a world industry, and with the contributions that that industry was making, and could further make, to the advancement of civilization irrespective of national boundaries, the world over. The invitations to representatives of the mining industry from the United States to participate in the Congress, and the warmth of approval which that participation evoked, were indications that such a congress cannot to-day be merely national in scope, and that trade in minerals, as in other natural resources, cannot be confined within national boundaries, but will seek its channels, unless artificial obstructions are too great, where the natural channels already exist.

The subject of the Coast Range batholith and its eastern contact zone needs no introduction to British Columbia mining men. Because of its reputed potentialities, this zone has aroused much interest. Because it has touched the pockets of the people by actually producing dividend-paying mines, it has been able, more particularly in certain isolated sections, to retain and accentuate that interest. However, the Stikine River section of the zone has never had the good fortune to have a mine developed, which, through profits or lack of profits, could create such interest. The Cassiar district, beyond the Stikine River area, has been a lure to the prospector for over half a century and was still strong enough in the last few years to attract close to a million dollars in capital and labour. All of this has passed through the Stikine river area, has looked at it, and ignored it. Sufficient interest has never been aroused in the area to bring forth an effort to see what is there, in spite of the fact that it belongs to the same zone in which some of our richest mining camps are located. Because the contact zone of the Coast Range batholith has long been recognized as an ore producer of considerable potentiality, the Geological Survey some years ago formulated a plan to map as much of this area as possible in order to assist in promoting its development. This plan has been furthered during the last fifteen years whenever opportunity presented itself, until today a fairly large part of the area has been covered. The work which has been done on the Stikine during the last two years is the beginning on what is the largest remaining gap in the general plan.

The Kamioka Zinc Smelter was converted from the jarosite process to the goethite process in the year 2000. The reasons for the conversion of the process were that the silica content of the raw material increased and the iron content decreased. The silica easily turns to a gel in sulfuric acid solutions and this causes the solid-liquid separation characteristics to deteriorate. The basic behavior of silica in sulfuric acid solution was investigated and it was found that the goethite process is the most suitable to effectively separate and remove silica from solution. Furthermore, Fe has the capability to remove elements such as Ge that have an adverse effect on zinc electrolysis. This means that, when the Fe content of the raw material decreased, the impurity removal capability also decreased and there was a risk of a build-up of impurities in the process. Iron precipitates in many forms in sulfuric acid solutions. The capability to remove elements such as Ge differs depending on the compound precipitated. Goethite has a higher capability than jarosite to remove elements such as Ge. In this report, the results of applying the process established by investigations of the basic behavior of Fe, silica and Ge in the zinc refining plant are presented.

"In spite of the applications of DEM models to emulate the elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio and strengths of isotropic rock in laboratory scale, extensions to anisotropic rock and larger engineering scale still have many challenges to overcome such as robust verification and validation against observed field case. In this study, a discrete element modeling was performed in order to represent a transversely isotropic rock such as shale, and the upscaled model was applied to foundation and borehole problems using PFC2D. The applicability of the upscaled rock mass model was verified by an analytical solution. The DEM modeling of stress redistribution induced by an applied surface line load compares well with Boussinesq’s isotropic solution and anisotropic solution given by Bray. The borehole model with a circular opening under biaxial stress was compared with both isotropic and anisotropic solutions resulting in good agreement. The abilities of DEM model to investigate the micromechanisms accounting for complex macroscopic behaviors and to predict the macroscopic behavior are discussed.The results demonstrate that DEM modeling has the potential to be applied to anisotropic rock mechanics problems on larger engineering scales such as wellbore stability problems especially in shale formations. Furthermore, the effect of anisotropy modeled through this study may be able to explain failure behavior of anisotropic rock encountered frequently in real cases.INTRODUCTIONAnisotropy is prevalent in various types of rocks, especially in shale that contain a set of parallel bedding planes. These weak planes in various forms are sources of large deformation and low shear strength and contribute significantly to the anisotropic behavior of rocks (Amadei, 1996; Cho et al., 2012; Kim et al., 2012). As elastic and strength behavior of anisotropic rock is substantially different from that of isotropic rock, proper consideration of anisotropy is of great importance. There is extensive of experimental evidence showing the anisotropy of shale. Niandou et al. (Niandou et al., 1997) analyzed the plastic deformation and failure mechanisms of Tournemire shale were highly dependent on the orientation of bedding planes. Cho et al. (Cho et al., 2012) presented various deformations and strengths of Boryeong shale obtained from laboratory experiments. Fjaer and Nes (Fjaer and Nes, 2013) performed uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength tests using Mancos shale, and they observed that the shear sliding along the planes of weakness before the occurrence of a major failure can reduce the strength of anisotropic rock. The recent research has demonstrated that the anisotropy of rock is an important consideration in rock engineering."

"Wollastonite (CaSiO3]) is experiencing increased usage in a variety of applications, such as fillers in paints, plastics and resins, as an extender to replace both non-fibrous and fibrous materials (e.g. asbestos), and in the glass and ceramics industries. Significant new deposits of wollastonite have been discovered in Marmora Township, about 175 km northeast of Toronto. The geological setting of these large-tonnage. High grade deposits has recently been investigated to assess the possibility of their development. A preliminary study of the chemistry, as well as the mineralogy of six occurrences is presented. Based upon this information, it is suggested that several of the deposits have an excellent development potential.INTRODUCTIONWollastonite is an anhydrous calcium metasilicate (CaSiO3), with a theoretical composition of 48.3% CaO and 51.7% SiO2; the calcium may be partially replaced by iron, manganese, magnesium, and strontium. Commonly associated minerals include diopside, tremolite, idocrase, grossularite andradite, quartz, and calcite. Wollastonite forms as a contact metamorphic mineral within impure limestone near intrusive bodies of granite, or other acidic rocks, as the result of metasomatism of calcareous sedimentary rocks, or by the crystallization of certain magmas (e.g. carbonautes). Generally, the reaction of calcite with silica to produce wollastonite occurs when siliceous hydrothermal fluids from a granitic intrusion or primary silica in the limestone/marble react with calcite in limestone at temperatures between 450°C and 600°C."

"The Geology of the Cochenour Willans mine, Red Lake district, was described by J. P. Nowlan in the Jubilee Volume. The complexity and intense alteration of the rocks obscured any clear relationship between ore and structure, and Nowlan recognized that future work might greatly modify the ideas then existing. This has proved to be the case. Subsequent detailed work has established the stratigraphic sequence in the Keewatin formations which are the host rocks of the orebodies, and has shown that the principal orebodies are confined to two adjoining bands of tuff.On this basis, it is now possible to map the complex structures with greatly increased accuracy. The amount of drilling and underground exploration required to find new ore has been much reduced, and indicated ore reserves are now substantially greater than at any time in the past. Scene II of this ""now you see it-now you don't"" drama opened on April 21, 1980, when Finance Minister Allen MacEachen, in an ""economic statement""' reintroduced a selection of tax proposals taken from the ill-fated Conservative' budget of December 11, 1979, but refused to bring forward major new proposals in tax and finance.Mr. MacEachen proposed a 5% surtax on federal corporation income tax to apply in the 2 years from January 1, 1980 to December 31, 1981, as a slightly modified version of the same surtax proposed by former Finance Minister Crosbie in his December budget address. Mr. MacEachen also reintroduced a number of technical amendments which would affect the taxation of mining income in certain instances. In addition, a large number of other tax proposals suggested in the previous Conservative budget were also reintroduced, although there are some notable omissions."

"Concentrate drying at the Sullivan Concentrator goes back to 1937 when the original coal-fired dryer was put into operation. This was a second hand 8' dia. x 56' long Struthers-Wells rotary dryer that came from the phosphate plant in Warfield, B.C.In 1962, replacement of the old dryer was seriously considered. The shell and the auxiliary drive mechanism were badly worn and needed replacing. In April 1963, the new 8' dia. x 65' long fuel oil-fired Struthers-Wells dryer went in operation at an installed cost of $174,000.In 1965, it was apparent that a major rebuilding of the dust collecting system would have to be done. A study was carried out and a Ducon Dynamic Gas Scrubber was installed. The system went in operation in November 1966 and has fully met expectations.In the same year, the zinc dryer was converted from fuel oil to natural gas. "The French Mine (formerly the Oregon) is 4 miles by road south of the Nickel Plate Mine. It lies on the steep eastern slope of the Similkameen River valley at elevation 4,000 feet, between Cahill and Winters Creeks.The property was discovered in .1901 and bought 4 years later by Messrs. French and Deardorf. It was developed in a modest way by the owners and by several companies until 1947, without success. The spectacular showings of bornite and chalcopyrite in the outcrop drew attention to its possibilities for copper rather than gold. Diamond drilling by the owners in 1947 yielded several high-grade gold intersections and created new interest. In 1949 the property was purchased by Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited. Exploration drilling and geological mapping outlined sufficient ore to commence production in 1950. Except for a few months each winter the operation has been continuous, and to the end of 1954 had produced almost 30,000 tons of high grade ore. The ore is crushed at the mine and hauled 8 miles by truck to the Company mill at Hedley, where it is treated together with the ore from Nickel Plate.Regional GeologyThe country rock consists of brown tuff, flows, limestone, and cherty formations belonging to the Nicola group (Rice 1947) of Triassic age. West of and just below the mine is a large mass of granodiorite which is part of the same body that underlies Nickel Plate Mountain. Bedding attitudes in the mine area are locally complicated, but dips are generally less than 45 degrees. To the south and below the mine the beds stand almost vertical, continuing downward with this attitude for 2,000 feet to Winters Creek. The main granodiorite contact is also steep, conforming to the sedimentary formations, whereas northward towards Nickel Plate it dips gently to the northwest, slightly flattter than the thick westerly dipping pile of sediments above it. The interpretation of this structure by Billingsley (1936) is that the French mine lies near the crest of the large northeasterly trending asymmetrical anticline which contains in its gently dipping western limb the Nickel Plate orebodies. The granodiorite body conforming roughly to this shape seems to occupy the core of the anticline. Sill-like prongs of granodiorite extend upward to the east from the main mass, outcropping over wide areas at the head of Winters Creek (Figure 1). There is a possibility that overthrusting from the west, similar to that on Nickel Plate Mountain, occurs not far below the French mine.An interesting feature of the granodiorite-sediment contact is that where it dips gently westward no alteration exists in the sediments, but where it has a steep front pronounced heat effects are indicated by the presence of a thousand-foot-wide zone of reddish garnet skarn."

We discuss the stability problem of a piston of the reversible axial-piston pneumatic motor called DAR-14M. We performed the full analysis of stress and deformation characteristics of the piston near a resonant frequency with the help of FEM ANSYS. We estimated the own frequency of the piston analytically for the given motor, this estimate was confirmed numerically in the model analysis FEM ANSYS. It was also shown in harmonic analysis that loaded piston end behaves very different in comparison to the unloaded end. As expected, maximum deformation was found in the area of the holes of the bearing shaft, indicating an optimization necessary in that region of the motor.

In mining operations the cost of timber is an item of much importance, because the life of mine timbers is, in many cases, very short and, as the supply of the better grades becomes depleted, less durable kinds must be used. This, of course, tends to shorten still further the period of service-ability. While it is possible that concrete and steel may, to some extent, take the place of timber in mines, their high initial cost and the difficulty in installation will greatly restrict their use. Moreover, wood, besides being comparatively cheap to handle, possesses other desirable qualities, and for many purposes a satisfactory substitute is hard to find. Both the decreasing supply and the increasing price of timber make its more efficient utilization imperative. AGENCIES DESTRUCTIVE TO MINE TIMBERS Timber used in mines is exposed to destruction from many sources. Wear, breakage, and waste are responsible for much loss. Wood rollers and drum laggings must be frequently replaced on account of the constant wear by ropes. Unprotected timber in chutes and mills is also rapidly worn by abrasion, and track ties in main haulage ways get worn by the feet of mules, cut by ropes, etc. Large amounts of timber are broken by 'crush' and 'squeeze,' and much temporary timber is buried beyond all recovery in pillar workings and in those mines which resort to back filling. Decay and insect attack, however, cause the greatest damage. If not totally destroyed by one or both of these, the timbers frequently become so weakened that they break under the pressure upon them.

The Helen deposit has long been known as one of the largest bodies of non-commercial iron ore in Canada, consisting almost entirely of siderite with a band of pyrite along the north wall and some lenticular inclusions of pyrite throughout the mass. It originally contained a nominal amount of hematite (2,800,000 tons), localized at the western end of the ore-body, but this was mined out during the years 1900 to 1918. For details of the:-geology of the Helen range and of the surrounding district, the reader is referred to Memoir 147, Michipicoten Iron Ranges, Geological Survey of Canada, 1926 (1). The siderite mass was explored by diamond drilling in 1917 and the portion so drilled was estimated to contain 67 million tons of siderite averaging 36.0 per cent Fe, 3.2 per cent S, and 8.2 per cent SiO,, without establishing its ultimate depth or extent. The variation in the sulphur content shown by drilling was from 1.5 per cent in 72 per cent of the tonnage, to 7.2 percent in the remaining 28 percent. The pyritic ore aver-aged about 38 percent iron, but otherwise its composition was substantially the same as that of the siderite mass.
