"Nondestructive inspection is an important quality control tool in the material processing industry. Being nondestructive, such a control may be applied to the whole production, as long as the available techniques are fast and easily automated. Ideally, nondestructive testing (NDT) methods should operate in a noncontact configuration in order to be deployable on-line with minimum perturbation of the production process.After a short introduction to the most common NDT techniques, with particular emphasis on ultrasonic, radiographic and electromagnetic methods, a few new approaches which are under development at the Industrial Materials Research Institute, (Boucherville, Quebec), are reviewed. Noncontact techniques such as laser ultrasound, thermoelastic and thermographic methodologies will be described, and their applications to materials of industrial interest will be discussed."

"More than 400 plants in the world are able to accumulate nickel in their aerial parts at concentrations higher than 10 g per kg of dry biomass. Then, nickel (Ni) can be recovered from the biomass of these hyperaccumulator plants. Agromining is a chain consisting in growing such plants and recovering metal and has been developed thanks to the combined know-how of agronomy and hydrometallurgy. Plants can be grown on serpentine soils, containing rather high concentrations of Ni, on sterile heaps or on contaminated soils. This crop enables us to extract Ni from secondary resources, and to improve soil quality by lowering its metal content. For example, Alyssum murale can be grown at the field scale in the Balkans, at yields corresponding to 110 kg Ni per hectare.Hydrometallurgical processes have been designed from the lab scale to the pilot scale to produce nickel salts: ANSH (ammonium and nickel sulphate hexahydrate), nickel sulphate, acetate, etc. and so on. These salts are used for surface treatment and in the paint and chemical industry. Ni salts are prepared from ashes, after plant calcination. Processes are based on the conventional methods of hydrometallurgy: acid leaching followed by different precipitation steps. These processes will be presented, as well as the pilot scale design. A life cycle assessment has been performed and clearly shows the environmental interest of this approach as a potential part of an anti-erosion strategy. An economic assessment has proved process feasibility and the final step is the launching of a start-up. At the moment, the approach is widened to other metals (cadmium, cobalt) and rare earth elements (REEs)."

"Tests were carried out on clear glass blocks containing borehole aligned with and at an angle to applied principal stress states in order to study the growth of drilling induced tensile fractures. The samples were illuminated such that photoelastic fringes could be video recorded during the measurements; this was useful in assessing states of stress and in determining fracture initiation. Axial drilling induced fractures were observed at the azimuths of the applied uniaxial stress as would be expected from the concentrated stresses. En echelon fractures were observed from the borehole deviated at 45° to the direction of the compression. These preliminary and currently qualitative results show that glass blocks serve as a useful test medium for studies of stress concentration and drilling induced fracture creation. INTRODUCTIONWith the increasing exploitation of unconventional oil/gas reservoirs using deviated drilling in recent years, the effects of the in-situ stress on the success of energy production have become more critical than ever before. Knowledge of the state of stress in the earth enables us to determine well trajectories, well locations, hydraulic fracturing design and production rates, but knowing the crustal stress is always challenging. Strictly, it can only be obtained to varying quantitative degrees by accessing the earth through drilling. Failure of the rock at the borehole wall produces borehole breakouts (e.g., Bell & Gough, 1979; Haimson & Herrick, 1986; Zoback et al., 1985) and drilling-induced tensile fractures (DITF) (e.g., Aadnoy, 1990; Aadnoy & Bell, 1998; Barton et al., 1997; Brudy & Zoback, 1999; Davatzes & Hickman, 2010; Peska & Zoback, 1995). Thus, it is important to understand the failure mechanism of the rock in the vicinity of the borehole. A number of closed-form expressions have been developed that allow the stress concentrations to be calculated in the vicinity of a borehole including Kirsch’s (1898) 2-D plane strain solution and 3D formulae for elastically isotropic (Hiramatsu and Oka, 1962) and anisotropic (Lekhnitskii, 1981; Amadei, 1983) continua. These solutions have been applied in numerous studies (e.g., Ong, 1994; Ong & Roegiers, 1996; Vahid & Ghassemi, 2011; Jia & Schmitt, 2014; Ito et al., 2001) to analyze the failure mechanisms of drilling-induced tensile fractures (DITF) on the borehole wall."

Ce secteur s'étend de la municipalité de Grenville jusqu'au pare du Mont-Tremblant (nord de St-Jovite). D'autres secteurs favorables a 'exploration pour la wollastonite ont été délimités dans les regions du Lac-Saint-Jean, de Shawinigan et de la Gatineau. Neuf categories litho-structurales de gites de wollastonite furent identifiées. L'importance d'un système ou vert pour la formation des gîtes de hautes teneurs fut établie. Un guide de prospection pour la wollastonite propre à la province tectonique de Grenville fut développé. Plusieurs des indices sont prometteurs et mériteraient des travaux de raise en valeur afin de determiner s'ils représentent une source de wollastonite exploitable à profit. Lac-Saint-Jean, Shawinigan and Gatineau areas. Deposits may be classified into nine categories depending on their relationship to intrusive rocks, discordant or concordant contacts with the host rocks, morphology, and major structural controls. Deposits consist mainly of wollastonite, calcite and clinopyroxene. They may contain one or several of the following minerals: feldspar, scapolite, quartz, titanite sulphides, zoisite, clinozoisite, garnet, idocrase and prehnite. Wollastonite content may reach over 70%. Some deposits are associated with graphite veins. Better understanding of the geology, combined with the proposed classification provides new exploration guide for wollastonite. Several deposits have grades of economic interest. Further work is needed to determine if any of these deposits can be exploited for profit."

This paper will discuss the benefits and advantages of using 3D survey data in stope analysis. Obtaining detailed 3D survey data of underground mine progress and production is a challenge. It is almost impossible to ?see? around corners, underneath overhangs, or deep into dark, dusty, humid underground voids. Thus, valuable ore can remain permanently encased in backfill. Without the benefit of 3D survey data, underground mines have the difficult task of meeting grade quotas without the benefit of knowing exactly what has been mined. Lack of this data usually results in unfavorable month end Reconciliation factors, where grades must be adjusted to match grades assessed by the Mill.

Noranda Sales Corporation Ltd. is an international metal and mineral product marketing company operating from Toronto and London, England, where it operates a wholly owned sales subsidiary and is a 50% partner in Rudolf Wolff and Company Ltd., a charter member and the largest metal broker on the London Metal Exchange. Noranda Sales employs 97 people, of whom 52 are university trained and professionally competent in international resource product marketing. We market for 19 companies or divisions in the Noranda Group and 39 companies for whom we act as agent, consultant and purchaser of resource production. Our business in 1976 was 1.5 billion dollars carried out in 45 countries and covering 24 products and materials. Today, ownership of most of the mining industry in Canada has transferred back to Canadians, and this is said with the knowledge that a significant part of the Canadian industry has been Canadian owned and managed from its very early days. Noranda Mines Limited is such an example. It was born in 1922 as the result of a copper-gold showing at Noranda, Quebec, discovered by Ed Horne, a prospector, financed with a grubstake by a syndicate mainly composed of New York businessmen. Shortly after the discovery, when the shares of the company had risen, the syndicate was sold to Canadian interests and, since that time, Noranda has been dominantly Canadian owned and certainly Canadian managed. Today, over 90% of Noranda's shareholders are Canadian, who hold an equivalent percentage of the stock.

"The Larder Lake-Cadillac Tectonic Zone in Rouyn-Beauchastel area (a 20 km long segment) contains distinct lithotectonic units bounded by artastomosing or sub-parallel shear zones. The gold deposits in the area are located within highly strained portions of E-W striking shear zones. The ore-zones are structurally controlled disseminated and vein-type lodes. They are spatially related either to megascopic z-shaped folds which refold E-W shears, or to areas of intersection between E-W shear zones and late NE-striking faults. Several ore bodies are enclosed within ultramafic rock units or at their contacts with adjacent units. All the lenses are elongated down dip and distributed, both loterally and vertically, ""en echelon"" . The ore zones tend to decrease in size and number away from the hinge zone of the megascopic z-shaped folds.Two main styles of mineralization are recognized at the Astoria deposit and at for most of the deposits in the Rouyn-Beauchastel segments a discontinuous ""Carbonate Ore"" and a more continuous, albitic sulphide-bearing ""Flow Ore"" (terminology used at the Kerr Addison mine).The typical ""Carbonate Ore"" zones are found within strongly arbonatized blocks bounded by conjugate late NE or NNW-striking fralls. The carbonatized blocks display features characteristic of llrittle to brittle-ductile deformation developed in shear zone system. Vein systems in the ""Carbonate Ore"" occur within shear fractures(D R)tension fractures (T), or within brecciated rocks adjacent to NS llrilcing faults. The ""Carbonate Ore"" zones are displaced by numer IU lole E-W, NNE, NW and N-S faults.The ""Flow Ore"" zones are found within predominantly ductile portions of E-W shear zones. The sulphide mineralization is finely disseminated and regularly distributed within mylonitic foliation or associated with veins and veinlets sub-parallel or oblique to the mylonitic foliation, in which case the mineralization is coarser grained. The gold mineralization is a late Archean event postdating the formation of the penetrative fabric, and synchronous with the end of the dextral oblique-slip motion."

"A USER'S VIEW OF CONVEYOR WEIGH SCALESThe Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited includes seven mines, three concentrators and a smelter. The flow of ore, concentrates, fuel and fluxes between and within these plants requires measurement for accounting and control. The design, installation and maintenance .of weighing systems falls within the responsibility of the Instrumentation Department of Falconbridge Nickel Mines thus al lowing a common approach to conveyor weighing problems and the benefit of a common spares supply. This paper gives a brief overview of the recent experience with conveyor scales within the Sudbury Operations and discusses the problem areas.GeneralThe best way to establish the total amount of material going to or from a process is with a bucket and a stop watch. Unfortunately the flowrates involved in mining plants make the buckets very large, but wherever it is feasible static weighing is the preferred method of determining total quantity. This applies particularly to batch systems, where the material can be brought to rest long enough to allow a very accurate weight determination. Any form of weighing in motion is susceptible to variations in the forces of the transporting system. A belt scale is affected by its position on the belt, idler alignment, support stiffness, variations in belt tension, material spills and build-up, and a host of other factors all of which require careful consideration in any installation.As with instrumentation applied to any system the plant should be designed to ensure that the best results can be obtained from the equipment. This means getting the scale supplier together with the conveyor supplier as early as possible in the designing of a new plant. Any corners cut in scale installation will be paid for later in poor results and/or increased maintenance."

"Abstract - Detrital minerals of upper mantle origin occur in Holocene conglomerates, pediments and antmounds, and in Oligocene conglomerates in the Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming. The minerals are derived from disaggregated eclogite and peridotite, and are similar to minerals found in mantle- derived igneous rocks such as kimberlite and lamproite, the primary host rocks for diamond. The Green River Basin bisects the lamproite fields of the Leucite Hills (Wyoming) and Kamas (Utah) and overlies the Archean Wyoming craton, which makes the region favorable for diamond occurrence. Lamproite is the favored host for the indicator minerals because unusual high-Fe salitic diopside macrocrysts from the antmounds and from the ~1 Ma old Leucite Hills lamproites to the northeast are compositionally identical. The salitic diopside is uncommon in other igneous rocks and could be a new indicator mineral for use in lamproite exploration. The Green River Basin indicator minerals are eroded from the ~29 Ma old Bishop Conglomerate, whose source area is the Uinta Mountains to the south. No continuous mineral train exists between the Uinta occurrences and those in the Green River Basin. Assessment of the minerals using established and new geochemical criteria indicate that they formed in an oxidizing upper mantle and were transported to the surface by either kimberlite or lamproite. The existence of cogenetic diamond is unlikely based on the mineral chemistry, but selective removal of diamond indicator minerals through weathering and fluvial transport cannot be excluded. Diamonds and mantle garnets are present in the northeastern Uinta Mountains, but they originated as part of the Diamond Hoax of 1872. A representative mineral assemblage from the true igneous host of the indicator minerals is required to fully establish their economic potential. Post-Oligocene erosion and Pleistocene glaciation have hindered efforts to locate a bona fide igneous source for the indicator minerals. Résumé - Des minéraux détritiques provenant du manteau supérieur ont été trouvés dans des conglomérats, des pédiments et des monticules de fourmis de l’Holocéne, et dans des conglomérats de l’Oligocène du Green River Basin, au sud-ouest du Wyoming. Ces minéraux sont issus du démantellement d’éclogites et de péridotites, et sont semblables aux minéraux trouvés dans des roches ignées provenant du manteau, comme les kimberlites et les lamproïtes. Green house gases have become a major concern within the international community over the last two decades due to their potential link to global warming. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the principal greenhouse gas. In the Kyoto Agreement, Canada has committed to reduce emissions by 6 % below 1990 levels by 2012. This presents a serious economic challenge to Canada and Alberta. Over the next decade, oil sands production expansion, population and industry growth and energy demand will increase CO2 emissions. Current and future CO2 emissions and their economic implications in Alberta will be critical in formulating a comprehensive and balanced policy for dealing with concerns in this area. Disposal of carbon dioxide (CO2) in land aquifers is a potentially viable option for Alberta in dealing with long-term CO2 emissions. Studies have confirmed the existence of appropriate aquifers in the Alberta Basin for CO2 storage over a long geological period. Carbon dioxide is an ideal candidate for aquifer disposal because of its high density and solubility in water at relatively high pressures. In this study, the authors develop a computer simulation model of a scaled aquifer disposal system. The scaled model consists of an injector well, aquifer environment with dominant Ca++ and Mg++ cations. Liquefied CO2 is injected at an appropriate pressure and concentration through an injector well model. The injected CO2 migrates from the point of contact between the injector well and the aquifer domain to the main regime of the latter. The rate of migration is a function of porosity, permeability, cations, aquifer fluid flow regime and CO2 injected pressure. These models are validated using flue gas data from the 546 MW Wabamum Power Plant in Alberta. The total energy requirements for aquifer CO2 disposal system are distributed between a minimum of 105 MW and a maximum of 172 MW, with a mean of 132 MW and a coefficient of variation of 10%. The results show that there is significant variability in all the energy requirements for the CO2 disposal system. The total energy requirements for the disposal system as a fraction of the total power generated by the Wabamum plant of 546 MW could be between 0.19 and 0.32. This is a very significant energy requirement and thorough analysis must be carried out to reduce this variability and energy requirements.

"What is now known as the 'Waite section' of the property of Waite Amulet Mines, Limited, was originally the Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery mine. It includes a group of twenty-eight claims lying on either side of the Duprat-Dufresnoy township line, and about 8 miles north-northwest of Noranda, Quebec. ,The original discovery of ore on the property was made by Thomas Montgomery in Block Q, Duprat township, and was staked by him on behalf of himself, I. C. Waite, and C. H. Ackerman, in the summer of 1925. The property was optioned late in 1925 to N. A. Timmins who, after trenching and drilling the deposit, sold his 85 per cent interest to Noranda Mines, Limited. Early in 1927, a company known as Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery Mines, Limited, was formed and shaft sinking and development undertaken. Production commenced in August, 1928, ·and continued tJ May, 1930, when, owing to falling metal prices, shipment of direct smelting ore was stopped. Development of the mine by shaft sinking, drifting, and drilling continued until March, 1932, when owing to the prolonged low price of metals, the property was closed down. In September, 1933, an amalgamation with Amulet Mines, Limited, was effected, the new company being called Waite Amulet Mines, Limited. Early in 1937 operations were resumed, first by direct shipments to the smelter and later by aerial tramway to the Amulet mill. Operations have been continuous up to the present time, reaching an average of 720 tons a day milled for the year 1940. Production during the initial period (1928-1930) amounted to 75,811 tons, having an average grade of 7 .11 per cent copper, 4.47 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold and 0.65 oz. silver per ton. During the second period (1937 to end of 1946) , 1,060,524 tons, having an average grade of 4.53 per cent copper, 2.97 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold and 0.65 oz. silver per ton, were produced."

THE Greenhill mine of West Canadian Collieries, Limited, is situated at Blairmore, Alberta, and produces 2,500 tons per day of bituminous coal. On Monday, October 25th, 1943, smoke was discovered by a party of firebosses on their regular weekly inspection of air-ways. Probably the fire had been smouldering for several days but, as it had started on the outcrop at the top of an old raise filled with dirt, only a small quantity of smoke could filter through, and the plume of mist that crowns the fan at that season had prevented the fan-man from noticing it. This raise is only about 200 feet from the fan, and is 70 feet long between the fan-drift and the outcrop. It was impossible to prove the origin of the fire, as it had probably started several days before it was discovered, but it is possible that a careless smoker may have thrown a match into the opening at the outcrop, and that the old, dry timber had caught fire. The airways are in No. 2 seam, a bituminous seam 18 to 25 feet thick surmounted by shales and sandstones. Only 45 feet vertically above it is No. 1 seam, 12 feet thick, overlain by a strong conglomerate. In that vicinity, No. 1 seam had been worked out about ten years ago and the strata between the two seams are undoubtedly fissured. The pitch of both seams is 43 degrees.

An open-pit mining operation can be viewed as a process by which the open surface of a mine is continuously deformed. The planning of a mining program involves the design of the final shape of this open surface. The approach developed in this paper is based on the following assumptions: 1. the type of material its mine value and its extraction cost is given for each point; 2. restrictions on the geometry of the pit are specified (surface boundaries and maximum allowable wall slopes); 3. The objective is to maximize total profit-total mine value of material extracted minus total extraction cost. Two numeric methods are proposed: A simple dynamic programming algorithm for the two-dimensional pit (or a single vertical section of a mine), and. a more elaborate graph algorithm for the general three-dimensional pit. ASURFACE mining program is a complex operation that may extend over many years, and Involve huge capital expenditures and risk. Carbon anodes in aluminium reduction cells are continuously consumed during electrolysis. In prebake cells the anodes are replaced at regular intervals. The spent anodes, called butts, are often allowed to cool in air while emitting fluorides into the building from the hot alumina cover and the adhering bath. In modem smelters spent anodes are placed inside enclosures and fluoride emissions during cooling are effectively reduced. Fluoride emissions from spent anodes were estimated by considering the kinetics of fluoride formation, a heat transfer analysis of the cooling anode butt and the ventilation flow from a cavity. Fluoride emissions from large anode butts cooling inside enclosures were compared with those cooling in air. Good agreement with published experimental values was obtained for enclosures having different leakage opemngs, when a hydrofluorination reaction of the spent anodes was included.

"IntroductionThis chapter will discuss the operational and maintenance aspects of a heavy media cyclone circuits as applied to coal processing and using magnetite as the media. It deals with heavy media bath separators in terms of types of media, equipment, circuits, media recovery, maintenance, and product handling. It will detail heavy media cyclone operation and supplement the previously described topics.The heavy media cyclone was first developed in the Netherlands by the Dutch State Mines in 1945. A cyclone plant was not built in North America until 1961. Traditionally, heavy media cyclones have been used to treat size fractions between 1lz in. (12 .6 mm) and 35 mesh (0.5 mm). High maintenance related to heavy media bath separators has recently prompted some plants to crush all raw coal to minus 2 in. for treatment in heavy media cyclones.The heavy media bath separators utilize only the force of gravity to make the separation between heavy and light particles. This requires lengthy retention time which can lower capacity and also is inefficient for finer particles. A heavy media cyclone utilizes centrifugal forces which are 20 to 200 times greater than the force of gravity. This means the separation between coal and the impurities occurs very quickly, therefore a low retention time is required allowing cyclones to have high tonnage capacities. Also these greater forces allow better separation for the finer particle sizes.Heavy media cyclones are now widely used to produce both metallurgical and thermal coal. Work is in progress to reduce magnetite consumption, extend wear life, increase tonnage capacity, improve separation efficiency and automatically control these cyclone circuits."

"Abstract - Gold-bearing quartz reefs commonly show extremely erratic and unpredictable grade variation, although gross geological continuity may be good. This type of variation is often described as being nuggety or having a high nugget effect and can be measured quantitatively using the semivariogram. Understanding of geological features such as reef texture and structure will provide improved models for the interpretation of assay data, drill core descriptions, etc. In this paper, a case study from the quartz-hosted gold occurrences in the Gwynfynydd mine, United Kingdom, is described. The work provides a starting point for models of lateral variation and demonstrates the types of structural and textural features that may be sought to give clues to the prediction of gold distribution in similar deposits. Gold deposition at Gwynfynydd is primarily associated with the reef footwall. The host veins form a discrete group of structures that may have been emplaced early in the sequence of quartz veins forming the reef. This potentially exposes them to a maximum number of dissection events during repeat dilations of the lode. Gold was deposited in the local porosity at extreme concentrations, equivalent to kg/t grades, when the host fissure had become filled with a porous framework of crystalline quartz and sulfides. Distribution of porosity varied laterally along the vein as the result of the formation of clump-like growths of minerals from the vein walls. The growth style is relevant to the distribution of gold although it may not be relevant to the occurrence of gold in a particular vein. The preservation of pores with some connectivity late in the vein fill sequence may be important in permitting continued but slow fluid flows. This facilitates effective fluid reaction with wall rock-derived methane, thus changing the relative rates of gold and quartz deposition in favor of gold. The textural studies explain the first-order control of nugget distribution at Gwynfynydd but do not allow for prediction and optimization of the resource estimation process. This is principally because of the very low geological continuity and poor predictability of the high-grade pockets. Nonetheless, the work does provide a clear geological explanation for the erratic nature of the gold. It indicates textures and structures that can be used to determine geological continuity of the goldbearing elements within the gross reef envelope."

"Predictive numerical methods are essential tools for reduced development cost and improved high performance designs of modern aircrafts. Their use leads to savings in terms of design cycle time and experimental trials. Composite materials subjected to impact loadings demonstrate various damage modes such as matrix cracking, fiber breakage, delamination and, ultimately, fabric fracture. Composite laminates are extensively used in the aerospace industry, and their damage modeling is complex due to their inhomogeneity and anisotropic behavior. Damage evolution affects both in-service properties and performance of these composites. In this work, the drop-weight impact test has been simulated. Using a material model that accounts for both delamination and intralaminar damage, laminates response is analysed using numerical simulations based on 3-D finite-element models of the commercial code Abaqus/Explicit. Experimental and simulation results are compared, in terms of energy absorption and contact force. The obtained numerical results show good agreement with experimental data.INTRODUCTIONAs primary aircraft structures are increasingly being made from advanced fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites and are in general exposed to a variety of impact scenarios (bird, hail, debris etc.), an understanding of the impact event and the performance of composite materials during impact is important in the development of new structures. This work is focussed on low velocity impacts that typically occur when foreign objects hit the aircraft during maintenance or other on-the-ground operations. These impacts can cause non visible damage that affect the structural integrity of the composite components. While for metallic structures, damaging impact events typically leave noticeable dents due to plastic deformation, in contrast, for high strength carbon fiber reinforced composites, they can deform elastically to strain levels exceeding 1% and the internal damage can often occur without the formation of a visible dent. The identification and effect of impact damage on the performance of the structure is thus of great concern to the aircraft industry as the durability and damage tolerance of these composite structures are strongly influenced by the size of detectable internal damage."

"Mathematically, the proposed formula is: ""Human Effectiveness + Technological Improvement = Success in the Nineties"". A brief review is made of geology, level of technology, management and labour situations, and range of production costs in coal producing countries. This comparison shows keen competition for Canadian coals, especially from the People's Republic of China, South Africa and Australia. Domestic competition comes from nuclear energy, hydro-electric generation, natural gas (if permitted) and eastern United States coal.The huge increase in the size and power of surface mining equipment in the last forty years led to modern large-scale open pit mining. While conventional truck and shovel operations will continue to be widely used, more continuous mining and conveying systems will be installed as pits become deeper and haul distances longer. Computer systems will become more sophisticated and their applications more widespread, leading to higher productivity and closer control of all operations and equipment performances and to partial or complete automation of certain operations.The underground revival will be driven by a new generation of mining people, cooperating to produce over 3 million t/y from 300 m longwall faces retreating over 3 km resulting in mine productivities of over 40 tonnes per man shift, as is already achieved in several mines throughout the world. Continuous operation using on-line control system will assist in consistent production with availabilities over 75%."
