"The induration of iron ore pellets has always utilized prefired pellets to protect the pallet cars from the environment of the induration furnace. This paper presents the process used to obtain superior upper sidewalls. These heat resistant castings are used on induration pallet cars, and their life improvements by as much as 400% is a significant step towards the reduction of the prefired (or hearth layer pellets.) The benefit to the industry in the removal of the hearth layer is improved overall productivity. IntroductionThe Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates with production facilities located in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Sept Iles, Quebec. It has recently been acquired by North Limited, an Australian based resource oriented company. Prior to its acquisition, IOC has examined several methods of operational cost reductions. One of these was an examination of indurrating pallets. Pallets are composed of numerous assemblies and sub-assemblies. The examination of the upper sidewalls began as an intent to increase the operational life of the component. The anticipated net effect was to be a reduction in the overall pallet maintenance cost. All of the components and assemblies have undergone a severe scrutiny. IOC has found that the success of the project has depended upon not only the technical competency of all parties involved, but also upon the ability to share risk, to be innovative, and to find a partner with whom the development can proceed without fear and yet with accountability. IOC has found in Cast Steel Products (CSP) such a partner in the field of pallet development. This paper will undertake to explore the progression into the arena of partnering between IOC and CSP. CSP and IOC met in the fall of 1994. The work of re-engineering the pallets began with an initial order for 36 pallets in March, 1995. The work on the upper sidewalls involved segregation of the effect of alloy development versus physical geometry development. The nature of partnering between the two companies allocated alloy development to IOC and physical geometry development to CSP, yet no advancements were made in either area without the close co-operation or the involvement of both partners."

"In the past, the metallurgical industry was most of the time dedicated on their main commodity, recovering base metals like zinc, copper or lead but leaving other valuable side elements in the generated residues. As a result, these accompanying minor elements, like gold, silver, indium or also PGMs can be found in the dumps of the corresponding industry. Because of political unrest, strikes, economic reasons or decreasing primary resources leading to a high supply risk, also those mentioned minor elements moved into the focus of the recycling industry. Therefore, beside the base metals, first of all the recovery of those minor metals would be of high interest contributing to the economic viability of recycling processes, although they occur in much smaller quantities in materials. In this context, residues from zinc industry, like leaching residues or precipitation residues show high potential to carry silver as well as indium next to lead and zinc. Therefore, the paper summarizes carried out thermochemical calculations investigating a possible recovery of silver as well as indium by volatilization and the influence of zinc and lead on this process. Based on these theoretical investigations with HSC, trials in lab scale were done verifying the obtained results.INTRODUCTIONHuge amounts of iron precipitate, mainly jarosite get landfilled every year although there is a high content of valuable metals in this residue beside iron. Nevertheless, jarosite has to be dumped due to the presence of contaminating heavy metals. The accumulation of these residues takes up massive land on the one hand but also causes a series of environmental problems in ecosystems on the other. Moreover, some toxic ingredients such as arsenic and cadmium can be dissolved in rain water and are therefore harmful to the health of the aquatic systems. (Erdem & Özverdi, 2011; ÖzverdI & Erdem, 2010) Approximately 0.5 t of dry jarosite accumulate in the production of 1 t of zinc by the hydrometallurgical zinc-winning route (Svens, 2010). Jarosite is a precipitation residue formed during the iron removal. In general, the iron already exists in the zinc ore which is why zinc ferrite builds up during the roasting step of the zinc ore. Zinc ferrite is only soluble in strongly acidic solutions and during the hot acid leaching step it gets dissolved while zinc and iron enter the solution. It is necessary to get rid of the iron because otherwise it would deposit on the cathode first due to its precious character which would be harmful in the zinc-winning electrolysis. Nevertheless successful investigations were done by adding chlorine to the jarosite to recover silver. These findings leads to another residue which occurs in huge amounts – electric arc furnace dust (abbreviated with EAFD) from the iron and steel industry. In 2013 the annual electric steel production reached about 451 million tons. Around 15-20 kg of EAFD is produced per ton of steel in an electric arc furnace (EAF), creating approximately up to 9 million tons of dust per year. (Grabda, Oleszek, Shibata, & Nakamura, 2014; World Steel Association) Next to elements like zinc, lead and iron, chlorine and fluorine are present in this dust. While galvanized steel plates in the scrap act as a source for zinc, casting powders, flame retardants and synthetic coatings are responsible for the chlorine and fluorine contents in the dust."

In the period 2003-2004, the situation of the copper concentrate market was unfavourable for smelters and refineries, with low TC/RC values and euro-dollar parity affecting European companies negatively. Within this scenario, Atlantic Copper decided to develop a plan to increase its competitiveness and to improve its results in these market circumstances. The plan affected all departments in the Company and was based mainly on cost reduction in energy and manpower. A general analysis of the Complex's overall efficiency was carried out and, based on this analysis, two major Projects emerged, "Primavera" and "KF". Each Project consisted of smaller sub-projects which aimed at improving the areas which could perform better according to our general analysis. The paper describes how this entire project developed and the final results obtained by the Company.

Facilities for carrying out operations in the three sections of the plant -the sampling section, the ore treatment section and the asbestos section -are fully discussed as well as laboratory facilities for (a) the preliminary testing of ores prior to pilot plant treatment and (b) the grading and testing of asbestos fibre. "Deformation behavior of 2A97 aluminum alloy containing coarse secondary phases was studied using uniaxial hot compression (HC, 340–490°C, 0.4001–1 s-1). The flow stress could be described by a Zener-Hollomon parameter in hyperbolic sine function with the hot deformation activation energy of 237 kJ/mol. Based on the experimental data and dynamic materials model, processing maps were generated to demonstrate the hot workability of the alloy. The coarse secondary phases experienced dissolution by varying degree under different deformation temperature, which producing different effects on the microstructure evolution. When deformed at relatively low temperatures, a mass of fine grains shaped up in the original grains and grain boundaries, and the dominating deformation mechanism was believed to be dynamic recrystallization. As the deformation temperature rising to 490°C, most secondary phases disappeared and few recrystallized grains were observed, indicating that the secondary phases dissolved sufficiently along with dynamic recovery occurred during the hot deformation. Particle stimulated nucleation related to the coarse secondary phases was believed to promote the recrystallization and the recrystallization behavior was sensitive to deformation temperature.INTRODUCTION Al-Li alloys has received much attention as new promising structural materials in the aircraft and aerospace industries, due to their lower density, higher elastic modulus and improved fatigue crack growth resistance in comparison with the conventional commercial aluminum alloys (Ou Ling, 2015). 2A97 alloy is one of the 3rd generation Al-Li alloys targeting at comprehensive improvement of aviation aluminum alloy and applications for wing spars and ribs to other internal structures for transport aircraft. Al-Li alloys are usually formed by hot deformation, either by rolling or extruding. The deformation behavior and resulted microstructure evolution during the forming process mainly dominates the formability of the alloy and the serving performances as well. Therefore, the deformation behavior and microstructure evolution at elevated temperature need be made clear for optimizing the hot processing parameters and controlling microstructure evolution."

"IntroductionTHE LOW-VOLATILE bituminous coals of the Brazeau field, Nordegg, Alberta, are soft and weak in structure. The seams contain .bands of inferior material, locally designated 'black jack', and thin bands of friable carbonaceous shale having no definite horizon but usually 'floating' in the seam. Because of the weakness• of the coal and the friable nature of the shale bands, run-of-mine coal usually contains a very high percentage of fines, as •Shown in the following table:SIZE WEIGHT. %Plus 1/2 in 25.61/2 – 1/4 in 13.31/4 - 1/8 in 14.6Minus 1/8 in 46.5The most convenient way of cleaning the fine coal would be by treating it in association with the coarse coal, so that no additional plant would be necessary. To a limited extent this is possible in certain types of equipment, notably the jig. A system of washing without pre-sizing is not •attractive, however, when dealing with the friable coal under consideration, which contains •a preponderant proportion of fines. At the new Brazeau washery, separation is made at 3/8-inch on •a Robins 'Vibrex' •screen, the coarse sizes being cleaned in •a standard pulsator-type jig. A feldspar jig is used to clean the minus 3/8-inch fraction."

First, permit me to say with what very great pleasure we find ourselves assembled in this most ancient and honourable city of Quebec. It is a city which we deeply respect as the fountain-head of the culture of French-speaking fellow citizens, and the seat of government of a province which is steadily recording new achievements in Canadian mining. Such achievements prove what can be accomplished when enlightened and progressive government policy, technical and scientific competence, and private initiative pull forward together in harmonious rhythm. It is a most happy and auspicious event also that the guiding control of the affairs of the Institute and of the fine traditions of provincial administration have for the past year been united in the person of our honoured President, Dr. A. O. Dufresne. This year, again, we have bad prepared for us by our hosts a splendid programme of technical sessions and social entertainment. Each year we pay an unspoken compliment to the Institute, expecting as a matter of course nothing but the highest standards in both these spheres. In its annua1, semi-annual, and regional meetings, in the constant activity of its local Branches, the Institute continues with marked success to perform its great dual service, social and educational. We are all its beneficiaries to the extent to which we choose to profit by participation in its affairs. But, one imagines, to none are the advantages of Institute membership more valuable than to young men embarking on their professional careers.

"Grinding media consumption rates and their dependence on key operating conditions in semiautogenous grinding mills is analyzed on the basis of a detailed mathematical model recently developed by Moly-Cop´s specialists which describes and takes into account the three primary media consumption mechanisms, namely: abrasion/corrosion, surface spalling and impact ball breakage. The influence of key mill operating conditions – such as ball filling, discharge grate opening, mill speed, lifter profile, and ball quality – on their corresponding grinding media consumption rates is explored via a variety of model simulations, discussing in every case the independent contribution of each of the indicated consumption mechanisms to the estimated total ball consumption rate.INTRODUCTIONA thorough understanding of the independent contribution of each grinding media wear mechanism is extremely important, especially in semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) operations where macrowear (spalling) and ball breakage cannot be ignored or neglected. The high impact conditions imposed in modern SAG milling environments has created serious challenges for grinding media manufacturers since their products must be able to perform with minimal breakage and surface spalling.GRINDING MEDIA WEAR MECHANISMFor SAG milling operations, at least 3 different mechanisms have been identified as the main contributors to the observed overall grinding media consumption, here referred to as: abrasion / corrosion, ball breakage and surface spalling.Wear by Abrasion/CorrosionThe abrasive/corrosive wear mechanism has been discussed in depth in previous publications (Benavente Hector, 2007; Guzman Levi, 2014; Sepulveda and Morrow, 2014). IN A DISCUSSION of use of any material of ?construction in the mining industry, two points of view must 'be kept in mind - that of the producer or manufacturer of mining and metallurgical equipment, and that of the maintenance and operating staff of the mining plant. In the first case, the choice of material of construction is up to the manufacturer and the user of the equipment has little direct say in the matter. However, if materials are badly chosen and the equipment does not function properly, wears out rapidly, or costs too much, repeat orders ?will likely go to a different manufacturer, so that, in the end, the consumer or mine operator does have the final voice. In the case of materials for maintenance work and plant operations, however, .the mill personnel have direct control over purchases and it is then that a well-balanced knowledge of materials, their properties, and their costs, can be directly useful. With all materials of construction, the final criterion is unit cost versus service performance, so that the lowest possible total operational cost will be obtained. Sometimes this means using the cheapest material available, sometimes the most expensive, but in any case careful analysis of service performance, replacement cost, and material cost is essential to determining the material that produces lowest total cost.

Canada, as the Free World's largest mine producer of zinc and the third largest mine producer of lead, has a vital interest in the future growth in demand for these metals. This paper traces the development of lead and zinc consumption in the last two decades, both on a total-Free-World basis and by major market areas. How Canada, as a major mine producer, has shared in this growth is also indicated. In addition, future consumption for both metals in the current decade of the 1970's is fore-cast. The demand these projections will make on Free World mines, particularly on Canadian mines, is examined. Some of the opportunities and challenges the Canadian mining industry will likely face during this period are also dealt with.

Summary This paper discusses the fundamental principles which allow the development of a new method for studying the deformation and failure of metals in terms of 'internal microstrains'. Internal microstrains mechanical and magnetic properties are defined and their influence on of metals is outlined. A research programme at present in progress will determine whether magnetic measurements of internal microstrains give sufficiently accurate values for predicting the performance of metals under service conditions. These magnetic test techniques are also being used to detect the beginning of plastic deformation and to trace the development of deformation processes and failure. Results of the experimental work in each field will be published. Introduction Any attempts are being made to develop a complete theory embracing the mechanical behaviour of metals. In spite of the amount of experimental data available, the theoretical approach is rather difficult, since most of the mechanical properties of a metal are determined by deviations from the pure chemical composition or the perfect crystal. Both types of deviation are difficult to reproduce experimentally and to describe theoretically. In general, there are three main avenues of approach to the problem being followed today.

Nautilus Minerals Inc the world?s leader in exploration and development of deep ocean mineral resources is today focused on the recovery of high grade copper-gold from in seafloor massive sulphide mineralization. These mineralized belts, analogous to land based volcanogenic massive sulphides (VMS) deposits are located near tectonic plate boundaries of the Western Pacific and around the world. Nautilus; first development project is Solwara 1 located in benign waters in Papua New Guinea. Since 2006 the company has completed detailed environmental and geological studies at Solwara 1, culminating in a number of world firsts, including the first Environmental Permit for a deep ocean mineral project and the first NI 43-101 compliant seafloor massive sulphide resource statement. Nautilus has relied heavily on proven deepwater technologies from the oil and gas industry in the design of the first mineral extraction system. Pipeline trenching units, workclass ROVs, deepwater production risers and drill cutting removal systems will all be adapted at Solwara 1. Key contractors to the project have all been selected for their deepwater experience, creativity and determination to launch this new industry. Innovation is at the forefront of Nautilus? success to date. This paper gives an overview of the Solwara 1 development and describes the exploration and production technologies adapted for seafloor mineral extraction.

"Free gold particles occur in many base metal and precious metal mines throughout the world. Due to the high density and malleability of gold, large circulating loads of free gold particles can build up over time in grinding circuits. This gold is often deposited in unintended traps throughout the mineral processing system.These unidentified free gold deposits represent a serious security risk as well as an inaccessible inventory of gold. Deposits of free gold particles often remain undetected by mine management until they are accidentally discovered while repairing mill equipment.Nuclear tracers have been used to determine the free gold recovery efficiency of gravity recovery equipment, drills, and sampling equipment (Clarkson, 1994, 1995; Walsh and Rao, 1986; Walsh and Kelly, 1992). In November, 1993, the author inspected the grinding circuit at La Mine Doyon in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec and made recommendations to recover coarse gold and to eliminate gold traps from the circuit. In 1995, the author salted mineral processing circuits with radioactive gold particles. The gamma and X-ray radiation from gold’s nuclear isotope (Au198) were detected through steel, in pipes, and in moving equipment using scintillometers. The radiotracers proved to be a safe, rapid and accurate method of identifying gold traps and improving security.Nuclear TracersWhen particles of gold are placed in a nuclear reactor, some of the gold atoms (Au197) absorb another neutron in their nucleus to form gold’s radioactive isotope (Au198). In the process of radioactive decay, this isotope emits high energy gamma rays and X-rays which are easily detected (even through steel) with scintillometers.Radioactive gold (Au198) has a very short halflife of 2.7 days. At the relatively low activity levels used for tracing, the particles remain detectable with a small hand-held scintillometer for about 10 to 14 days. After 14 days the irradiated gold is close to background levels and within two months it is essentially non-radioactive. The radiation has no effect on the recovery characteristics of the gold particles. The gold radiotracers are very safe due to their very low level of radiation, short half-life, and their inherent physical and chemical stability. However, the use and possession of even mildly irradiated gold is strictly licensed and regulated."

A four-year study was carried out to determine the ability of coniferous trees to aid in the reclamation of uranium tailings at Elliot Lake. Five species were planted: white cedar, white spruce, jack pine, scotch pine and red pine. More than 570 bare-root, two-year-old seedlings were planted on bare tailings and in areas of established grasses. A further division was made between areas of coarse and fine tailings. Over-all survival and growth of the trees has been far below expectations based on previous experience with several varieties of grasses. The criteria for assessment have been per cent survival and yearly growth as determined by plant height. Pine was superior, with 68% survival when planted in bare coarse tailings, 45% for vegetated coarse tailings and 34% for vegetated fine tailings. Cedar had the worst survival rates at 49%, 14% and 7% respectively. No species survived on bare fine tailings. The survival and growth of the coniferous trees have been related to species, environmental conditions and tailings properties.

The use of strong base resins for uranium recovery is severely affected by the presence of chloride ions in solution. In areas where high-quality process water is not readily available, the use of saline water would extend the potential application for ion exchange in uranium processing. This study presents measurements of uranium uptake, using a wide range of commercially available weak base anionic exchangers, from solutions with chloride concentrations ranging from 2.5 to 22 g/L Cl. Out of 14 weak base anionic resins tested, 3 were identified that were not severely impacted by the presence of chloride and significantly outperformed a gel strong base resin typically used for uranium recovery in high-chloride environments. The uranium loading was sufficiently high for the consideration of development of the application of uranium recovery from uranium ores leached with seawater.

Regeneration of hydrochloric acid steel pickle liquors has traditionally been accomplished by pyrohydrolysis. However, a number of factors have recently conspired to reduce the attractiveness of this approach. Moreover, the process is not amenable to small-scale operations. On the other hand, the standard technique for regeneration of sulfuric acid pickle liquors, which is the low-temperature crystallization of ferrous sulfate is applicable to any size operation. A similar technique has recently been developed to regenerate hydrochloric acid. Sulfuric acid is added to the ferrous chloride-bearing spent HCl pickle liquor. The temperature is then reduced to below 0°C, resulting in the crystallization of ferrous sulfate heptahydrate and liberation of free hydrochloric acid. Depending upon the crystallization temperature, variable concentrations of sulfate are left in the regenerated acid. Although this residual sulfate has an impact on the pickling characteristics of the regenerated acid, tests have shown that by adjusting the conditions, pickling rates will be at least equal to those using pure HCI, and an acceptable surface finish will be produced.

"Ore outcrops were first discovered in the area in 1911. Following various periods of exploration by private interests and Cominco Limited, the Coast Copper Company, Limited property was brought into production in August 1962. Subsequently, Cominco explored the adjacent Quatsino Gold Mines property and is currently developing, and producing from, what is now known as the Benson Lake Mine.The Benson Lake Mine was developed using a conveyor-equipped decline and trackless LHD equipment. The operation produces 800 tons per day of copper-iron ore, copper being the main product. Copper and iron concentrates are trucked 25 miles to storage and shiploading facilities near Port McNeill to await shipment to Japan."

"A variety of reagents are utilized in coal preparation, but aside from performing their desired function relatively little is known about the behavior of these reagents within the processing circuits. Where exactly do reagents go once dosed? In this paper, we present preliminary results of partitioning studies on frother (i.e., MIBC) and collector (i.e., diesel) chemicals commonly used in coal flotation, and examine implications for water management (e.g., in closed-loop systems). Additionally, we discuss the usefulness of such data in predicting environmental transport and fate of chemicals – which is currently a top priority for industry.INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of coal preparation is to upgrade mined coal into more valuable products. Since coal is primarily used as a fuel source for electricity generation, product specifications are typically contracted to minimize unwanted constituents that detract from the overall heat value (e.g., ash and moisture) or that add to environmental pollution or other problems like corrosion at a power plant (e.g., sulfur) (Pitt & Millward, 1979). Failure to meet specifications results in a financial penalty for the coal producer (Szwilski, 1986), and thus preparation processes have evolved to simultaneously optimize recovery of valuable “clean” coal with rejection of mineral matter and moisture. In addition to advancements in equipment and circuitry, development and application of various chemical reagents has dramatically improved the performance of coal preparation processes.Contemporary preparation plants typically include multiple circuits that can be categorized by the size of particles they process: coarse, intermediate, and fine/ultra-fine (Figure 1). Coarse and intermediate circuits generally rely on size classification and gravity separations (e.g., dense-media cyclones), and do not require significant chemical reagents. However, fine and ultra-fine circuits often use froth flotation to separate coal from impurities, which requires chemical additives (Table 1). The primary additives include collectors, which coat the surface of the coal particles to render them (more) hydrophobic and thus more likely to attach to air bubbles and float; and frothers, which aid in the formation and stability of the froth that will accumulate the floated coal particles. Modifiers are also commonly added to flotation circuits to regulate pH in instances where coal or impurity characteristics may change water chemistries (Laskowski, 2001). Following flotation, coagulants and flocculants are often utilized in solid-liquid separations (i.e., dewatering or clarification) for coal products, and for tailings slurries prior to their disposal in impoundments. Coagulants function via double-layer compression1 to bring colloidal particles together, while flocculants promote bridging between the grouped colloids – and the combined result is enhanced sedimentation (Wills, 2006). Defoaming or anti-foaming agents may also be required to avoid fouling of dewatering operations."
