Higher prices for natural gas or oil have motivated the copper industry to reexamine the modes of oxygen and oxy-fuel burner usage at operating plants. With rising energy costs and the growing importance of environmental protection, burner usage and burner operations have become the focus of several investigations and optimization efforts. One possible approach to lower energy usage is through combustion using tonnage oxygen. When such oxygen is used, the flame temperature increases and operational efficiency is improved. As well, with the correct technology, due to the presence of lower levels of harmful substances such as NOx in the off gas, there is improved environmental performance. As regards copper production, furnaces are employed for both concentrate smelting or for melting and casting operations. The use of tonnage oxygen in concentrate burners for smelting provides for a higher thermal efficiency. For furnaces employed for melting, air-operated burners may in fact have an initial advantage because a long radiant flame is typically generated, thus providing for a higher degree of heat transmission. This paper describes the new experimental burner chamber of Messer Austria GmbH which provides for testing of the combustion of natural gas with oxygen or oxygen-enriched air and the use of special water cooling ducts that simulates a metal charge during melting, The operational effectiveness of the burner is determined from temperature and off-gas analysis data. SULPHUR, like the minerals of coal, iron and petroleum, is one of the essential materials in our modern expanding industrial civilization. Before discussing the salient features of the production of sulphur from the Canadian sour gas, it seems appropriate to outline the historical past and probable future utilization of sulphur. The ancient Greek writer Homer spoke of its "pest-averting sulphur" and the "divine purifying fumigation". Ancient alchemists found sulphur to be a fascinating and baffling material. The discovery of gun powder in the year of 1250, and its application to the art of war a, century later, made sulphur an important commodity in the progress of mankind. The initial manufacture of sulphuric acid in the year of 1736 by the Englishman Joshua Ward, established the basis of a chemical industry that today utilizes 80 per cent of the consumption of elemental sulphur. Commercial production of the chemical soda ash ( N a2C03) discovered in 1787 by the famous Leblanc Process, in-creased international demand for the element sulphur and marks the birthday of the Sicilian sulphur industry.

THE HOISTING PLANT at the Stobie section of the FroodStobie mine is a two-shaft installation designed to handle a daily production of 18,000 tons of ore at depth. The two vertical shafts are within 100 feet of -each other, an arrangement made to provide the needed capacity and to give flexibility of operation (Figure 1). No. 7 shaft, used for handling men and supplies as well as for hoisting ore, has been sunk to the 3000 level and is served by a manhoist handling two cages and an orehoist with two 14-ton capacity Kimberley skips. No. 8 shaft, so far completed to a depth of 1,900 feet, handles only ore. The hoist is semiautomatic with push-button control and the skips are 15-ton capacity bottom-dump. The ore-loading pocket for first stage hoisting at both shafts is 120 feet below 1,600 lev-el and additional pockets are planned, as the shafts are deepened, at 800 foot intervals down to 4,000 feet.

"The Mt. Milligan porphyry copper-gold deposits are in central British Columbia, 155 km northwest of Prince George. Mineralized outcrops and float were discovered in the Mount Milligan area by prospecting. The most recent discoveries, which utilized lithogeochemistry, were in 1983. Areas containing the outcrops and float then were investigated by geological mapping, soil and lithogeochemical sampling, ground and airborne geophysical surveys, trenching and diamond drilling. This work led to the discovery of the Mt. Milligan Main deposit in 1987 and the Southern Star deposit in 1989. Extensive diamond drilling continued until 1991 and delineated a measured and indicated resource of 299 million tonnes grading 0.45 g/t Au and 0.22 % Cu from the combined deposits.The Mt. Milligan deposits lie within the Early Mesozoic Quesnel Terrane and are hosted by porphyritic monzonite stocks and adjacent volcanic rocks of the Takla Group. The Mt. Milligan Main deposit is centred around the MBX stock and Rainbow dike, and the Southern Star deposit around the Southern Star stock.Potassic alteration is extensive within the stocks and in volcanic rocks adjacent to the MBX stock and Rainbow dike. Propylitic alteration surrounds the potassic alteration and decreases in intensuy away from the stocks. Mineralization consists mostly of pyrite, chalcopyrite, lesser magnetite, and minor bornite, molybdenite and gold.Mineralogical zoning is well-developed within the deposits. A biotite-rich subzone forms the core of the potassic alteration zone and hosts most of the copper and gold. Numerous polymetallic veins lie within the propylitic alteration zone just beyond the limit of porphyry-style copper-gold mineralization."

ABSTRACT In a nickel smelting process, large amounts of off-gas emissions are generated, which can cause serious environmental and plant hygiene problems if not properly treated. With increasingly stringent environmental regulations, an enhanced understanding of well-controlled, off-gas cleaning systems is vital. In this paper, dynamic models for an industrial smelter, off-gas system tackling hazardous sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide are developed using mass continuity, momentum, and energy conservation laws. The effect of air in-leakage is explored under different operating conditions. The developed models provide an enhanced process understanding and a necessary basis for highperformance control analysis of smelter off-gas systems.

THE blast furnace is the base of the steel industry, since there is no commercially practical way of converting iron ore directly into steel. In three hundred years, the blast furnace has developed from a small unit using charcoal as fuel and producing about one ton of iron in twenty-four hours to a furnace making upwards of 1,500 tons a day. The principle of the blast furnace is briefly this: A descending column of stock, consisting of ore, fuel, and flux, is met by an ascending stream of gases, consisting in part of gases formed by the combustion of the fuel and in part of pre-heated air which is blown into the lower part of the furnace. The flux combines with the impurities in the ore and the ash in the fuel to form slag, which is drawn off as liquid.

"The notion of ""value"" has always been a subjective and contentious issue. Indeed, Value is in the eye of the beholder. There are varied methods and practices for valuing property, as there are industries in which they are applied. For example, there are ""replacement value"", ""insurance value, ""salvage value"", ""appraised value"", ""book value"" and ""fair market value"", to name a few, although in the mining industry, valuations usually refer to fair market value.In the Canadian mining industry, at present, there are no comprehensive regulations or guidelines that specify which approaches or methods are appropriate for use in the valuation of mineral projects. In January 1999, The Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum establish a committee to review and advise on approaches and methodologies for the valuation of mineral properties. Among the approaches to be considered, are included the following: the Discounted Cash Flow Approach, the Cost Approach, the Option Pricing Approach and Market Comparables Approach. In addition, methodologies differ depending on whether the project is at the exploration stage or the producing stage.The CIMVal committee expects that its final report will form the basis for a standard Canadian Code for the valuation of mineral properties."

"Coal is one of Alberta's major fuel resources, but its distribution, especially in the flat plains region, has been somewhat obscured by surficial deposits. After a period of neglect, easily strippable plains coal is presently approaching a position of dominance in electrical power production, a position it is likely to retain for a number of decades in the face of strong competition from hydro and nuclear power. Accordingly, the Research Council of Alberta has undertaken an inventory survey of the province's supplies of this resource.In the southern part of the province and in the north-central forest-fringe area, some strippable coal is found in the Belly River Formation and its equivalents, but major strippable coal reserves in large areas of central Alberta occur within the Edmonton Formation. The survey is planned on a reconnaissance scale, drilling test holes at 2-mile intervals in selected large areas. It appears to show that, in well-settled regions, large reserves of strippable coal are only to be expected where they have long been known; major presently unknown bodies of coal must be sought in unsettled regions or at depths too great for strip mining. However, such bodies might still be economically competitive with hydro and nuclear power in the production of electric power for some time to come."

In September 1945, when the Lynn Lake nickel orebody was discovered Sherritt Gordon Mines was a small copper mining company with rapidly depleting ore reserves at its single producing mine at Sherridon in the Cold Lake area of Manitoba, 100 miles north of The Pas. The company has been formed in 1927, largely through the efforts of Eldon L. Brown, a 27-year old mining engineer, with the financial backing of Thayer and Halstead Lindsley and the Gordon family. The Lindsleys were American mine promoters who had been successful in the Sudbury area, and the Gordons had extensive interests in the lumber industry in northern Ontario. Carl Sherritt, who gave his name to the company, was an American trapper and prospector who had staked the copper property and sold his interest to the new company. Carl Sherritt died in a flying accident at The Pas in 1928. The Sherritt Gordon Mine started production in 1931, shipping copper concentrate to the new Hudson Bay copper smelter at Flin Flon, Manitoba. In 1931 the price of copper was 18¢/lb. Within a year the price had fallen to 5¢ /lb and the mine was forced to close. It remained closed through the Depression years.

"Preventative maintenance is a burden for equipment users but a demand from the machine suppliers to ensure performance. Machine availability depends on preventative maintenance being followed.Mining equipment is becoming more and more sophisticated and productive, yet less and less time is available for preventative maintenance. Manufacturers invest in reducing costs, simplifying operating requirements, and lowering maintenance requirements, but it is the users who must invest more heavily in the advanced maintenance systems to keep the units operating.IntroductionPreventative maintenance has been, and still is a key factor in avoiding disturbances in production due to equipment downtime. Manufacturers ask for it in extensive maintenance schedules, check lists, programs, etc. often with a ""threat"" that, if not performed, the machine guarantee will not be valid. Modern mining and construction machinery has become sophisticated, like all other machinery, with elaborate hydraulic, electric and electronic systems and computerized controllers. Maintenance organizations within the mining industry have grown to heavy cost centres just to keep up the availability of the equipment.It is difficult for machine manufacturers to have maintenance programs that suit every user. International suppliers have to deal with different cultures, education levels, environments, organizations, etc. Maintenance programs recommended by manufacturers often do not meet some user's needs while they are ""overkilling"" to others. Preventative maintenance schemes recommendations of what to do, in what frequency, etc.) usually fit mechanical components in the equipment, e.g. wear measurements, crack indications, lubrication, oil changes, etc. But how does one perform preventative maintenance on huge hydraulic systems, electrical and electronic systems and computers? Failures in these systems usually occur without any warning and are more or less impossible to predict. Another difficulty in creating effective preventative maintenance programs for these kinds of systems is the relatively low volume of mining and construction equipment that is produced per year. For example, although Atlas Copco is one of the largest manufacturers in the world of underground blast hole drilling machines, the company still does not produce more than a few hundred drilling jumbos per year. These are made in more than 10 different models, with different systems and components, and very often are custom adapted to the end user's requirements."

The report focuses on the process measurements of the mass of rock in the bucket power shovels and dragline excavators. The mathematical models are suggested of AC and DC electric drives of excavators. These models are a basis for calculation methods of the electric drive electromagnetic torque. The design schemes of mechanical equipment of excavators considered to account the situation of bucket in the plane of the boom. The methods of static moment allocation and identification of the excavator technological operations are developed. The results of the work are experimentally tested on power shovels with bucket capacity of 12 and 18 m3.

Hydraulic hoisting offers a number ~f attractive features over conventional hoisting methods: small shaft space requirements; great flexibility of layout, including pick-up or delivery of the material at points distant from the mine shaft; low investment and operating costs. However, limited practical experience with this type of hoisting dictates that careful design and, frequently, extensive testing be done by competent engineers before large-scale installations are built. This paper covers the following: basic laws and design criteria for hydraulic hoisting installations; a description of a coal hoisting installation which has been in industrial operation since 1960, with a vertical lift of 600 feet and an annual capacity of 500,000 tons of -3 ~-in. coal; and a tentative appraisal of the process, including cost estimates. "Future open pit metallurgical coal mines in western Canada will be developed in complex geological environments. The success of these operations will be influenced by the mine operators' ability to prepare accurate mine plans and to predict and, subsequently, 10 control both out-of-seam dilution and coal recovery. Quintette Coal Limited has been mining its tightly folded and severely faulted Mesa depo sit at annual rates of up to 9 Mt of raw coal, since October 1982. Ongoing development drilling combined with continuous utilization of blast hole information, has been required to achieve an acceptable geological data base for short range mine planning. Thrust faulting has been a primary geological cause of difficulty in selectively mining waste and coal, which has resulted in higher than expected dilution in plant feed. The same geological phenomenon has also increased reserves by 6.3% and allowed for expanded mine plans to include a lower thrust plate, ultimately doubling the mines original reserve base. This paper illustrates the geology of the Mesa deposit and the type of work involved in its interpretation. Regional GeologyThe Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) property is located in the Peace River Coal Field of northeastern British Columbia. In this area, northwesterly-trending folds of the Rocky Mountain foothills are commonly cut by multiple, low-angle thrust faults, which dip to the southwest. The Lower Cretaceous Gates Formation, of near shore continental origin, contains 5 to 7 mineable seams of medium volatile bituminous metallurgical coal (Figs. I and 2). These seams normally range in thickness between 0.75 m and 9.5 m and have an aggregate thickness of between 15 m and 22 m."

"The copper-molybdenum property of Brenda Mines Limited is located in the Okanagan district of British Columbia, approximately 25 miles west of Kelowna. The Okanagan Valley is a resort and fruit-growing area, and therefore pollution control measures are more stringent than in some remote areas.The Brenda plant began production in April 1970 and is operated at a rate of 24,000 tons per day. The plant site is located at an elevation of 4,800 feet, which is approximately 3,600 feet above the level of Okanagan Lake. The site is in the Okanagan drainage basin.The major consideration in the design of the system was the prohibition of any downstream discharge. It was therefore necessary to redaim as much water as possible and to minimize the addition of fresh water to the system. The maintenance of a water balance is of critical importance.This paper will outline the major design criteria for the systems and the site investigations which were carried out. The design and construction of the facilities will be de-scribed and current operating experience will be outlined."

Iron deposits of every major type except laterite occur in Quebec, and form one of the major iron ore resources of the world. The five principal types of ore described are: (1) hematite-goethite masses derived from iron formation through the oxidation and enrichment of iron by natural processes; (2) taconites consisting of fine-grained iron formation; (3) metataconites composed of coarse-grained iron formation; (4) iron and titanium oxide minerals in massive or disseminateed deposits within gabbro and anorthositic rocks; and (5) replacement or contact? metasomatic magnetite deposits associated with complex silicate and skarn mineral assemblages. Most of the ore, although relatively low grade, is easy to concentrate. The physical properties of the ores that affect the choice and efficiency of beneficiation methods are described. The extent to which iron ore from this area can be utilized in the future will depend on the continued use and improvement of highly efficient methods of beneficiation.

"Recent trends move towards automation, smart sensors, internet of things, powerful DCS, and more data. Are those trends already utilized in a real time production environment? Today operators still have to monitor several complex processes at the same time and predict their behavior based on an overwhelming amount of data available.The fact of the operator being overloaded and humans being unable to process multivariable problems shows the need of a tool merging essential data and providing consistent, sound decisions for long-term profitability.This paper shows a successful execution of ABB’s process improvement services in Aitik (Boliden SA), a copper mine located in Sweden. Soft sensors, fuzzy rule blocks and model predictive control were seamlessly integrated in the control system of the grinding area, resulting in proper control of mill loads and particle size without violation of any constraints.INTRODUCTIONDepending on the ore characteristics and the targeted plant capacity, the design of the grinding circuit may vary significantly. Typically, the circuit consists of several mills (rod, ball, SAG, AG) in series and/or parallel with a number of classifiers and sumps at appropriate locations. The goal of the grinding section is to reduce the ore particle size to a level that enables efficient separation between gangue and precious metals in the subsiding processing step. The trade-off between quality and quantity has to be made. It is also crucial to execute this process step at the lowest possible energy and grinding media consumption.An optimal grinding process controller must manage to maintain a given fresh feed level while keeping the product size within a given range without violating any constraints such as power, torque or load limits. To accomplish the aforementioned, it is necessary to manipulate the ore feed rate, water feed rate and the mill speed. The most significant disturbances adding another degree of complexity to this control problem are ore hardness and the amount of circulating load."

"THE LEAD-ZINC and tungsten mines of Canadian Exploration Ltd are on Iron Mountain, 8 miles south of Salmo, B.C., in the Nelson mining division. Relative location of the mines is shown on the general plan.First recorded lead production was in 1908 from surface outcrops. Small amounts of high lead ore were mined intermittently until 1926. No major lead-zinc production occurred until 1949 when outcroppings on the south side of the mountain were mined and diamond drilling began to prove the existence of a large replacement orebody. Lead-zinc ore has been mined continuously from the Jersey orebodies since March 1949, with monthly tonnage as high as 50,000 tons per month, but currently averaging 30,000 tons per month.Schee1ite-bearing tungsten ore was found in 1942 by H. Lakes in an old adit and open cuts at the north end of the Emerald tungsten orebody. The Emerald tungsten mine was developed by the Federal Government as a Wartime Metals project and operated for eight weeks in the fall of 1943, when the poor demand for tungsten closed the mine. Canadian Exploration Ltd. purchased the mine in 1947 and mined in excess of 100,000 tons in 1947-48 until the demand for tungsten dropped again and interest was centred on lead-zinc. The Federal Government repurchased and reopened the Emerald Mine in 195 L and built a new concentrator. The mine and mill were sold back to Canadian Exploration Ltd. in 1952.Regional Geology and IntrusivesThe host rock for both the lead-zinc and tungsten mineralization is the Laib formation of Lower Cambrian age, which consists of 400 feet of crystalline limestone underlain by beds of argillite, and argillaceous limestone locally altered to ""skarn"" or ""tactite"". The Laib limestone is overlain by black argillite and underlain by the Reno quartzite of Pre- cambrian age. Repetition of folded beds has allowed the interpretation of the large isoclinal fold which repeats the limestone (see general cross-section). Dolomitization and the associated lead-zinc ore have been found only in the right-side-up limestone and are not known in the overturned limestone.Two elongated stocks of granite cut the sediments. The Emerald stock outcrops along the east side of the Emerald tungsten mine and again west of the Jersey workings, while the Dodger stock outcrops only at the north end of the Iron Mountain. The shape and attitude of these bodies are believed to have been governed partly by pre-granite faulting and partly by pre-granite folding of the sediments. Although some forceful intrusion may have occurred the detailed granite surface indicates a gentle stoping emplacement."

"During the summer of 1968, the author was employed in the Research Department of Dominion Foundries and Steel, Limited, Hamilton, Ontario. Over the years, Dofasco has been conducting a program for developing more efficient control of its basic oxygen steelmaking process. The author was thus able to obtain a variety of viewpoints from both research engineers and furnace operators. He also had access to extensive literature dealing with BOF control schemes underway at other major steel producers. This paper describes the present state of developments in BOF steelmaking control.The necessity for efficient BOF control is pointed out. To appreciate the variables to be controlled, a brief outline of process fundamentals is included. Technical aspects of present methods of practical control are examined in detail; the relative merits of dynamic over static control models are emphasized. Finally, it is shown how an effective dymic-optimizing control scheme serves as the basis for closed-loop computer control of the process."

Historical The limitations of reverberatory furnace operation have prompted many investigators to consider electric furnaces for melting electrolytically refined cathode copper. In the majority of cases where experimental work was performed, the furnace used was of the granular resistor, induction, or indirect-arc rocking type, and attempts to adapt the three-phase direct-arc furnace to copper melting appear to have been relatively few. In 1935, the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, carried to an advanced stage its experimental investigation of continuous melting of copper in the three-phase direct-arc furnace, and demonstrated that this process was technologically and economically practicable. Trial operations were conducted at the Huntington, W.Va. works of the Company, and were followed by the installation at Copper Cliff, Ontario, in 1936, of a full-scale unit for commercial operation. Two years later, a second unit was installed -which raised the electric melting capacity to a point permitting complete replacement of the coal-fired reverberatory furnace operation in the production of refined copper castings.
