As fossil fuels become depleted over the next century, it is imperative that Canada and other countries examine ways to transition to other sources of energy, particularly renewable resources. A critical obstacle to developing Canada?s renewable energy resources is the scarcity of infrastructure to wheel the generated electricity to a viable market. For each megawatt of renewable electrical power, a maximum of 1 km of connecting power line is typically feasible. This means that hydropower, geothermal, and wind power projects with capacities up to 100 MW must be located within a maximum of 100 km of a main power line in order to be economically viable. With a total length of about 1200 km, the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline project creates an excellent opportunity to become a corridor that can seed renewable energy projects in Northern British Columbia and Alberta. Utility companies must build new infrastructure to provide the electricity for constructing and operating the proposed pipeline. The pipeline and linked power line infrastructure therefore, should be designed and built with consideration to create an energy highway to the significant renewable energy resources, such as hydro, wind, and geothermal, in the vicinity of the proposed pipeline. Some of the important renewable energy resources in northern British Columbia can be developed in connection with the proposed pipeline. It is estimated that close to 2,500 MW of commercially viable wind, geothermal and run-of-river power resources are present in the proximity of the proposed pipeline corridor. While oil flows westward from the Alberta bitumen fields, the generated green power can flow eastward to help the Canadian oil sand industry to offset as much as 10 Megatons of carbon emissions per year. The generated carbon credits are equivalent to 75% of the emissions associated with extraction of the 525,000 barrels per day of oil from oil sands, intended to be carried by the pipeline.

Foreword The complete history and early development of the Sullivan mine was fully covered in a paper entitled 'The Development of the Sullivan Mine and Processes for the Treatment of its Ores', prepared by the staff of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, and presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division of the Institute at Trail in October, 1924. At a subsequent meeting at Blairmore, Mr. E. G. Montgomery read a paper on the mine, and in 1926 Mr. M. M. O'Brien brought the subject up to date at the joint meeting of the American and Canadian Institutes at Cranbrook. The present paper is necessarily based largely on these earlier accounts. Discovery and Early Development The outcrop was discovered in 1892 and the property was bonded and later sold to the Sullivan Group Mining Company, of Spokane. From 1896 to 1899, surface stripping and test pits (at A) around the outcrop exposed a vien of sulphides with varying amounts of lead and zinc. In some places, a 35 per cent lead ore carrying 15 ounces of silver was found. These lenses were of commercial value. With the completion of the Kimberley branch of the Canadian Pacific railway, in 1900, some systematic development was started. A shaft l00 feet in depth was sunk (at B). Shaft-house, boiler-room, and compressor-plant were erected, and a steam diamond-drill was put into operation.

Introduction The development of the method for recovering zinc from lead blast-furnace slags at Trail is interesting and important in the history of both lead and zinc metallurgy. Many efforts have been made in the past, particularly in Germany, to make economic recovery of zinc from slag. The Pape process on Oker slags was successful and is being worked at the present time. More recently the Waelz process has come to the fore. One effort at Cockle Creek, Australia is of special interest in view of subsequent developments. This was re-ported in detail by Guy Courtney in 1920(1). It deserves mention as it shows how, as in many other instances in the metallurgy of lead and zinc, important pioneering work has been done in Australia. These experiments, started over 25 years ago, comprised reduction with coke, powdered coal, and eletrothermically in carbon-lined furnaces. The so-called slag eye furnace, which volatilised the metals from a blast furnace running with a hot top, was also investigated.

"Previous testwork by the authors has indicated that both granular coconut shell based activated carbon and a new microporous carbonaceous bead, Lewatit® AF 5, are highly effective in improving the oxidation kinetics and decreasing the elemental sulphur yield when assisting the atmospheric oxidation of pyrite. While the two carbon catalysts show similar results and improvements to the pyrite oxidation, there are differences between them. For example, the activated carbon assisted oxidation showed faster kinetics than the AF 5 assisted oxidation, while elemental sulphur seemed to remain adhered to the surface of the AF 5 after oxidation when much of the elemental sulphur formed during the activated carbon assisted tests was found in the oxidation residue. The objective of this paper is to investigate the differences between the two catalysts through the use of scanning electron microscopy, photography, Raman spectroscopy, surface chemistry analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis. With this investigation the authors should be able to achieve a better understanding of the surface chemistry of the two carbon catalysts (i.e. functional groups, charges, acidity etc.) and help explain the strengths and/or the weaknesses of the catalysts when applied to the atmospheric oxidation of pyrite.INTRODUCTION Previous research conducted by the authors, indicated that both a granular coconut shell based activated carbon (activated carbon) and a microporous carbonaceous bead, Lewatit® AF 5 (AF 5), acting as a catalyst enhanced atmospheric pyrite oxidation in ferric sulphate media by approximately 40% when compared to unassisted oxidation and that elemental sulphur yields were increased from 23% to approximately 69 and 63% when assisted by AF 5 and activated carbon respectively (Cowan, Jahromi, & Ghahreman, 2017). The study indicated that although total pyrite oxidation assisted by the two catalysts was similar, differences were noticed in the impact that the two catalysts had on the outcome of the oxidation. Kinetic curves in the Cowan et al. study indicated that atmospheric oxidation of pyrite seemed to reach completion after 48 hours of oxidation when assisted by activated carbon. A similar trend was noticed in the kinetic curves for oxidation when assisted by AF 5, however the oxidation curve did not reach completion until approximately 96 hours (Cowan et al., 2017). This observation indicated that the kinetics of pyrite oxidation are enhanced by both catalysts, oxidation kinetics are much faster when assisted by activated carbon rather than AF 5."

"Ventilation in process buildings is key to proper mill function. Correctly engineered systems to evacuate surplus thermal energy from process areas allow optimized rates of air change, thus assuring the good functioning for the lifecycle of the process while demonstrating conformity with occupational hygiene standards. Computational fluid dynamic simulations, coupled with traditional calculations and physical modeling, can demonstrate to end users and assist engineers in the optimization of mill ventilation, reducing total installation costs while assuring that the proper solution is in place for the complete lifecycle of the process equipment. Results have been fully implemented on a number of steel mill and aluminium smelter applications and we continue to study, optimize, and innovate as new tools become available to provide the best possible engineered solutions for particular applications. INTRODUCTIONThe objective of this research project is the development and implementation of modern approaches and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation in the engineering of green ventilation of hot process buildings. This will assure the predictive performance and improve the quality and ease of construction of industrial gravity ventilation equipment, along with the adjunct hot process buildings, while lowering the overall project costs and time to completion.In order for a hot process building, such as a steel mill, to properly function, heat must be extracted from within. This is accomplished by having air inlets at the bottom of the building and outlets at its apex. The reason for this is to maximize the potential chimney effect. When using stack (buoyancy) effect ventilation, the process heat becomes the driver. Therefore, increasing this distance (height) improves the ability of the heated airstream to utilize basic gravity for acceleration of the heat/air flow, allowing a regular number of air changes per hour while ensuring that the process environment remains weather resistant under normal operating conditions.This process has been understood since the time of King Charles I of England, who decreed in 1600 that buildings should have 10 foot ceilings and that windows should be made taller rather than wider to allow better smoke extraction.Figure 1 is a painting of the Bethlehem Steel Works in the 1860s, where the concept of air inlets and penthouses on the roofs for air outlet was already being put into practice. The Cassiar Asbestos mine is situated on McDame Mountain in northern B.C. at a mean elevation of 6000 ft (1830 m), some 6 miles (9.6 km) from the townsite /mill complex. Asbestos ore production averages 1,200,000 tons at 9% R.M.G. (Recoverable Mine Grade) and waste production is 6,000,000 cu. yd annually. Waste is loaded by P&H 1900 AL 11-cu.-yd shovels and transported by 75-ton and 85-ton end-dump trucks to the waste dumps. The ore is loaded by a 992 Caterpillar 10-cu-yd front-end loader into 50-ton and 75-ton trucks, which transport it to the crushing plant located at the mine. The ore is transported by a 15,370-ft (4685-m) tramline to the mill complex.

In this work, the effect of doping yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) with 5, 10 and 15 mol% erbium oxide (Er2O3, erbia) was investigated using spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. Sintering was carried out at 1300°C with 30 and 60MPa uniaxial pressures and a 5min hold time. Densification kinetics were studied using displacement response from the SPS machine. As-sintered microstructure characterization was carried out via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, while chemical composition was characterized by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results suggest that sintering carried out at 60MPa produced high density composites even though erbia dopants were found to inhibit material densification and grain growth during sintering. 5, 10 and 15mol% erbia- YSZ had cubic crystal structures, as verified by XRD analysis.

"This paper reviews the history, occurrence, properties, and uses of indium, and describes the commercial production and fabrication of that metal by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited (Cominco), at Trail, B.C'. Indium is produced commercially at Trail from dross retreatment furnace D.R.F.) slag, a complex by-product of the lead smelting operations. Furnace feed prepared from this slag is smelted with coke and limerock in an electric furnace. The e1ectric furnace bullion is parted electrolytically, producing a market-able lead-tin alloy containing about 8 per cent tin, and leaving the indium in the anode slime. Recovery of indium from the anode slime involves roasting the slime with sulphuric acid, followed by leaching with water, purifying the leach solution, recovering the indium by sponging with zinc or aluminum, and re-fining electrolytically. This process yields standard grade (99.97+ per cent) indium which is either sold or refined •to high purity ( 99.999 per cent) indium for special uses requiring higher purity metal."

The grain structure prediction of metallic alloys during a welding process is often an issue. In addition to the welding parameters and the alloy nominal composition and properties, the base metal grain structure and chemical homogeneity also play an important role in the formation of the final microstructure. In this paper intensive characterisation of solidification structure in gas tungsten arc welding of Ni base alloy 600 are described. It is shown that in transverse section of the weld, while the grain structure shows some texture following constrained solidification growth, grain density in the weld is similar or greater than grain density in the heat affected zone. This suggests that simulation of the welding structure needs, in order to be predictive, to take into account : epitaxial growth, secondary nucleation events and 3D growth inside the weld pool.

"This paper focusses on what seem to be the leading indicators of prosperity in the minerals industry during this decade: the geographical distribution of deposits, environmental impact, capital allocation and acid consumption. There is a potential for meeting environmental criteria at a reasonable profit margin, but those with limited acid demand within economic range will face hard times to meet growing environmental concerns, resulting in additional mine closures. At the other end, those with old waste dumps who are thinking about smelting capacity additions will need capital influx at a much larger rate than ever before. All things considered, a change should be made in the way the world's copper reserves are computed, because there is a growing need to internalize these effects back to the ore blocks before a meaningful estimate of reserves becomes available.IntroductionThe copper industry has undergone several changes during the past decade, many of which were expected to take place because they rel1ect the economics of ageing mines. However, many others took place that shocked the industry because they were not completely under control. The focus of this paper is to rel1ect on those changes, and on market expectations for this decade that somehow depend on their impact.To review the prospects for new mine developments and expansions from an industry perspective to a full extent, it would be necessary to consider not only the deposits themselves, but also geographical constraints, environmental constraints, labour composition, technology development and use, the availability of capital, ownership issues, and integration within the industry. This paper, however, will concentrate on only some of the key elements that are believed to playa major role in shaping the market in the decade that has just begun. Since the 1.940's, the bulk of the ore production from the Sullivan Mine has come from pillars. These pillars, located from 100 to 2000 feet below surface, have been subjected to considerable ground pressure. Mining techniques were adopted to minimize the problems of deteriorating ground conditions. These techniques included an orderly sequential blasting of pillars along a retreat front, stage blasting of tall pillars in horizontal slices and utilization of broken pillars as "buffers". The latter two techniques involved leaving substantial tonnages of broken ore in place for as long as 4 years. Rapid oxidation of metal sulphides, with attendant heat and noxious gas generation, had occurred in a few very localized areas of the mine associated with a major water course. However, in a very short period starting in 1972, sulphide fires spread to several of the large blocks of broken ore that had been left inactive for lengthy periods. There proved to be no feasible method of extinguishing these fires, except by complete removal of the burning ore. The attendant problems of handling large tonnages of burning ore have had considerable negative impact on the mine operation. The chemical reactions involved in these sulphide fires have been studied by the mine staff to determine the conditions necessary for' initiation and propagation of the tires. Techniques to safely and efficiently handle hot ore have been implemented and refined. Lastly, and most important, mining methods at the Sullivan Mine have been revised to ensure that additional fires do not occur.

It is therefore necessary to change or convert this A.C. power to D.C. power so that the D.C. motors can be used."

"IntroductionThe very recent emphasis on the importance of the northern portions of the Alberta basin as a prospective oil province has led the oil companies northward into new and undeveloped territory. Northern Alberta is a land of continuous forest, covering a plains-type topography. The plains are only occasionally broken by sharp, broad river valleys. Tributary streams head up quickly and very soon lose themselves in large undrained areas. It is these pseudo-swamps that cause most of the troubles and headaches of the oil explorer.The rivers have served as the main transportation arteries since people first ventured into this area. The bush is being pushed back, but the advance is slow and there is very little more than trappers' trails beyond a few miles from the Northern Alberta Railway lines and the recently built Grimshaw or McKenzie Highway. Indeed, bush and muskeg flank many miles of the railways and roads within as close a distance as fifty miles of Edmonton. Northern Alberta is pioneer country in the truest sense of the word, and our greatest problems derive from this fact. In all pioneer areas, the first requirement is the development of access roads, and before active oil exploraton can get down to the job at hand these roads and trails must be an accomplished fact. There are two factors in Northern Alberta which offer discouragement to the oil explorer: the first and greatest stumbling block is presented by the numerous muskegs, large and small; the second is the fact that road building uses up so much of reservation time. Of course, the second is aggravated by, and a direct result of, the first. So we come back to the main problem facing the development of the north - the muskegs."

"THIS SESSION marks something of a milestone in that it is, as far as I know, the first session at a CIM Annual Meeting devoted entirely to exploration geochemistry. This is an indication of the general acceptance and widespread recognition by industry of geochemistry in mineral exploration. As a first, I hope it proves sufficiently successful and interesting that geochemical exploration sessions will become a routine part of future CIM annual meetings. The greater use and acceptance of geochemistry has resulted in many investigations and advances, especially in areas such as the Canadian Shield. For a first session on geochemistry, the meeting in Quebec suggested an ideal opportunity to assess these advances and report on the current application of geochemistry in the Shield. The theme of the session is ""Geochemical Exploration in the Canadian Shield - The State of the Art."" A series of six papers will be presented dealing with the various dispersion media - rocks, heavy minerals, ""soils"", lake sediments, waters and vegetation. As a background to the individual presentations, I would like to take a few minutes to briefly trace the history of the use of geochemistry in the Canadian Shield."

The writer presents a concise summary of eleven recent discoveries made in the Maritime Appalachian area, with suggestions for fur the research. This information may prove helpful to geologists working in other fields and to students contemplating further avenues of research in mining geology and exploration. INTRODUCTION THIS paper is not intended as a research study on the subject, but i. merely a brief review of eleven discoveries that have been made in the Canadian Appalachian area. Furthermore, this is not a critical analysis of the merits of any one geophysical method, but it is an un-prejudiced observation of how these discoveries were actually made and what techniques were apparently most fruitful. Some generalizations are attempted whicl1 may suggest further avenues of research in the field of mining exploration. A Sievert ' technique was used. The few determinations made on 10 per cent and 20 per cent V alloys did not show any deviations from Sieverts' law up to I>N2 = 1 atmosphere. The same held true for alloys of 0.2 per cent Ti. Nitrogen absorptions in Fe-Ti alloys, containing from 0.50 to 0.77 per cent Ti at 1,600°C, follow Sieverts' law at low PN2 values, but, due to the formation of a delta titanium nitride phase, deviate from this law beyond critical values of PN2? There is evidence that this phase is Ti1.1N. Occupational epidemiology of the nickel-producing industry has found that inhalation exposures to certain nickel-containing substances are linked to respiratory cancers and to nonmalignant respiratory endpoints. Establishing such a linkage, however, is complicated by the fact that some diseases occur long after exposure to a causal agent (i.e., some diseases have long latencies). Furthermore, most chemical agents (especially nickel substances) vary significantly in their toxicological properties and their concentrations in workplace air have varied over processing history. Because of these complications, it is critical to understand historical exposures to specific nickel substances. To assist in this effort, the author focuses on the history of smelting and its related processes at Vale Canada’s (Inco’s) Ontario operations in the first half of the 20th century.
