THE copper-nickel sulfide ore deposits of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited contain the minerals pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In the extraction of the nickel, copper, and iron, much of the processing involves oxidation of the metals as well as sulfur. Roasting plays a predominant role at several stages in the operations which prepare the constituent metals for refining. Copper, nickel and iron concentrates of various grades, ranging from low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite to high-grade nickel sulfide, must be partially or completely oxidized. Figure 1 shows the main points at which roasting is conducted at INCO. Roasting experience at INCO dates back to the time when lump ore was partially roasted in heaps. It has progressed through single hearth roasters, sinter machines, multiple-hearth roasters, flash roasters, and more recently has centered on the development and utilization of fluid bed roasters. Introduction Stamp-Milling and amalgamation is, perhaps, one of the oldest processes of recovering gold from its ores. Many papers, theses, and textbooks have been written on the subject of stamp-milling practice in general, but, to my knowledge, there have been no publications describing the modern stamp-mill as designed, developed, and operated in Nova Scotia. Although it may be said that the gravity stamp-mill is the most primitive, and perhaps the crudest, crushing machine in existence, it is at the same time the most satisfactory all-round milling and amalgamating device yet contrived. Originating in Saxony, and used in North America first in Virginia and Georgia, the stamp-mill, in a primitive form, later found its way to California and Colorado. Here, it speedily developed from an affair of wood shod with iron, and operated with the crudest gearing, to substantially its present form. Briefly, it consists (see Figure 1) essentially of a series of hammers (the stamps), which fall upon a mixture of ore and water contained in a cast-iron box (the mortar). The resulting crushed ore (the pulp) is splashed out through a screen on the front of the box. For some years after the discovery of gold in Nova Scotia, in 1861, the ? arrastra and Chilean mill were used to recover the gold from the rich ores. The stamp-mill followed, and various types were used, principally the California and Gilpin County types. Then, in 1895, Mr. M. R. O'Shaughnessy, one of our foremost amalgamators, conceived the idea of a new type of stampmill, which has since become standard in Nova Scotia gold mines. This mill, unique in its design and operation, is specially adapted for the most efficient extraction and recovery of gold as it occurs in our Nova Scotian ores. It is commonly known as the Underwater Feed type, as opposed to the usual Overwater or Top Feed type, and it may be rightly termed The Nova Scotia Self-Classifying Stamp Amalgamation Mill. It is conceded by experienced mill-men that it is superior to any other type of mill for recovering the very coarse and granular gold typical of the ores of this Province. The particular installation and practice to be described in this paper is that of the Guysborough Mines, Limited, at Goldenville, Guysborough county. Emphasis will be laid on certain operating innovations of extreme simplicity and high efficiency.

"IntroductionAN EXCELLENT paper entitled Potash Discoveries in Western Canada (l) was presented to the 1948 Annual Meeting of the C.l.M. by L. Heber Cole, of the Department of Mines and Resources, Ottawa. In the intervening three and a half years, the search for oil and gas in Saskatchewan has added considerably to the information available on the occurrence of potash. It is the purpose of this paper to summarize the additional data. For greater clarity, it may be useful, first, to recapitulate some of the highlights of Mr. Cole's paper.Underlying the western plains of Canada there is a large deposit of sodium chloride, believed to be of early Devonian age. Associated with the sodium chloride are certain potash salts, primarily 'sylvinite,' a mechanical mixture of sodium chloride (halite) and potassium chloride (sylvite) crystals. The potash salts, when present, are usually near the top of the salt formation, though in at least one well they were found near the central part of the deposit. Cole reported on some seven wells in Saskatchewan which had encountered appreciable amounts of potash; these were the Ogema, Radville, Davidson Nos. 1 and 2, Prairie Salt Nos. 1 and 2, and Verbata wells. Depth of potash from surface ranged from 7,653 feet in the Radville well to a minimum of 3,466 feet in the Verbata well. Such depths do not compare favourably with those at which the potash is found in mines in the United States, France, and Germany, where about 1,000 feet is the average. The greatest concentration of sylvite encountered was in the Verbata well, where a bed 11 feet thick carried the equivalent of 21.64 per cent K20."

"IntroductionTHE PROPERTY of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines. Limited. comprises fifty-eight claims located between Russet and Faulkenham lakes in Baird and Heyson townships of the Patricia portion of the District of Kenora. The mine is seven miles •by road from the hamlet of Red Lake. This latter centre is .connected to the Trans-Canada Highway at Vermillion Bay, Ontario, by provincial highway No. 105 which has a total length of one hundred and thirteen miles.The Madsen property went into production on August 11th, 1938, with a milling plant rated at 300 tons per twenty-four hours. Changes made in the crushing plant during October, 1938, allowed a •finer feed to be delivered to the mill and increased the milling •capacity to 400 tons per twenty-four hours. During 1948, steps were taken to add an additional 400-ton capacity unit to the milling plant. This latter work was completed by May, 1949, giving the present total milling .capacity of 800 tons per twenty-four hours.It was realized in the early 1940's that, eventually, considerable material suitable for backfilling in the mine would be required. As there were no large deposits of gravel or sand anywhere near the mine, officials of the Company considered it advisable to investigate the feasibility of using mill tailings for mine •backfill. Since Madsen mill tailings contain approximately 80 per •cent of minus-200-mesh material, it was not considered practical to use them for underground backfill without first removing the finer material. as the slimes present in a product of this fineness would without doubt preclude any drainage whatsoever. Table I gives a sizing analysis of Madsen mill tailings and Table II a quantitative chemical analysis of the ore."

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to discuss, in a general way, the application of geological principles in the exploration for, and development of, deposits of industrial minerals. Mention of geological factors pertaining co specific minerals will be by way of illustration only. Since many prospectors are little acquainted with the geological setting and mode of occurrence of deposits of these minerals, some prospecting possibilities in the field will be pointed out. Geology is a tried and proven tool in the search for and exploitation of metalliferous deposits and of oil and gas fields, but, so far at least as Canada is concerned, only very rarely has a directed, intensive search been made for deposits of industrial minerals. Examples might be cited, however, where, in other countries, such investigations have yielded rich rewards. Thus, development of the vitally important potash deposits of New Mexico was the result of a deliberately planned programme of geological investigation, first by United States Government agencies, and later by private interests. War or the threat of war, or peace-time industrial expansion, can render concentrated exploration for specific minerals desirable or even essential. Such exploration is, primarily, a geological problem. Admittedly, there is in general less scope for the application of geology in the search for, and development of, deposits of industrial minerals than of metalliferous minerals, oil, etc. Where the latter are concerned; the objective of exploration is to find a material that is valuable, within broad limits, no matter where it is located or how it occurs. The unit value of the material is limited only by the amount of the valuable constituent in the formation- its possible upper limit is tremendously high. On the other hand, many industrial minerals constitute in themselves 90 per cent or more of the formation- their amount cannot increase and their unit value is commonly low. Moreover, for commercial exploitation, the deposit must, in general, be reasonably close to markets or to plant or other facilities for processing the raw material, since, owing to its low value, this cannot be transported any great distance. As a consequence, intensive geological search for and investigation of such deposits has been restricted to industrialized areas. Obviously, however, it is good insurance for any operator to understand the geological background of his deposit, particularly in the case of new developments.

"Cyanide destruction technologies are implemented at gold and silver operations to comply with the International Cyanide Management Code and meet ever more stringent discharge limits. Currently, the most common chemical cyanide destruction processes used in industry are sulfur dioxide/oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and Caro’s acid. The cyanide destruction process used at an operation must reliably generate streams of acceptable quality at all times, and depends on numerous factors, including permit discharge requirements, tailings chemistry, location, site-specific climatic conditions and size of the operation. Selecting the most appropriate cyanide destruction process and determining the process design criteria requires accurate laboratory testing. This paper presents and discusses the results of a number of cyanide destruction evaluations that have been conducted to reduce cyanide concentration in process solutions or cyanidation tails. Laboratory testing provides important insights into reagent consumption and other factors required to achieve the target residual weak acid dissociable cyanide (CNWAD) levels.INTRODUCTION Process solutions associated with the extraction of gold and silver contain several forms of cyanide. The most toxic form of cyanide is free cyanide, which can be present as a dissociated cyanide anion (CN-) or gaseous or aqueous HCN. Weak or moderately stable cyanide complexes such as those of zinc, copper and nickel are classified as weak acid dissociable (CNWAD). Although less toxic than free cyanide, weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes are considered “ecologically sensitive” forms of cyanide and are regulated in most jurisdictions. In practice, reported WAD cyanide values comprises both free cyanide and weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes. Cyanide complexes with gold, mercury, cobalt and iron are referred to as strong acid dissociable complexes (CNSAD) and are much more stable, even under mildly acidic conditions. Another term commonly used in cyanide chemistry is total cyanide, which represents all cyanide compounds present in solution. Total cyanide levels in solutions are always equal to or higher than WAD cyanide values and the difference between the two usually indicates the presence of iron-cyanide compounds. Typically in Canada, CNTOTAL levels cannot exceed 1 mg/L in solutions discharged to the environment."

"The objective of this research is to evaluate the magnitude of carbon prices required to drive process development and innovation for the global nickel industry in a direction that tackles the multifaceted sustainability challenges that the industry faces, including air pollution reduction and greenhouse gas abatement. The results suggest that the currently considered carbon prices are not sufficient to drive innovations in processing methods or upstream pollution prevention. The co-benefits of climate change mitigation and pollution prevention cannot be readily realized under climate change policy alone. Increased coordination between climate change policy and performance-based environmental legislation is necessary. INTRODUCTIONNickel is an important metal in our modern society as it is used in stainless steel, alloys, electroplating and rechargeable batteries, all of which are integral to our economic growth and development (Eckelman, 2010).However, nickel production is energy intensive and therefore susceptible to emerging climate change policies, which may lead to production curtailment and/or increased unit costs of production unless changes in efficiency or energy sources are made (Mudd, 2010). The industry is faced with multi-faceted constraints: future technology must not only deal with metallurgical, financial and environmental constraints but also promote low energy and low carbon practices. This presents a challenge for this industry where technology innovation, development and commercialization are often lengthy, risky and costly processes (Imrie, 2006).Climate change is one of the many challenges faced by our society. Others include other pollution to air, water and land, resources shortage and economic development. From a policy perspective, it is important to balance multiple and often competing needs in an integrated manner. It would require some levels of trade-off in order to maximize the overall effectiveness but also to ensure that one policy does not undermine other policy objectives.The aims of this study are to evaluate how developments in climate change policy would affect the nickel industry in the context of existing environmental regulations and how the industry could respond under these constraints."

Iron ore fines are by-products of iron ore mining operations. Unlike iron ore lumps, fines cannot directly be used in conventional iron making processes, and consequently large quantities accumulate around the world. Pelletizing and sintering can be used to convert iron ore fines into agglomerates or briquettes for processing with lump ore, but these techniques are energy intensive and produce greenhouse gases. This research investigated the extraction of iron from iron ore fines using acetylacetone (a ß-diketone) as an environmentally friendly alternative process for fines utilization. A 2k factorial experiment design was used to identify the significant extraction variables. It was found that the reaction temperature and solid to liquid ratio had significant effects on the extraction process. The extraction kinetics were studied at different temperatures and the highest iron extraction (97 %) was obtained after 48 hours at 413 K and 0.025:1 (g:mL) solid to liquid ratio for a particle size range of +106 to -150 µm. The extraction products were easily separated from the unreacted acetylacetone by flash distillation and iron(III) acetylacetonate crystals were recovered. An economic evaluation showed that selling the crystals was profitable. Alternatively, the crystals can be reduced with hydrogen to iron particles and acetylacetone (for reuse).

THE object of this paper is to present the various facts that l1ave been revealed during lengthy investigations into the performance of all types of ropes on different hoisting installations. It then goes on to suggest means by which most of these findings could be usefully employed to obtain more economical rope lives with increased safety. For SOFCs, composite cathodes comprising an electronically conducting electro¬catalyst (e.g. LSM) and an conically conducting electrolyte material (e.g. YSZ) are considered to improve the electrochemical performance by extending the active reaction zone to regions beyond the electrolyte-electrode interface, as in the case of conventional cathodes. Interpretation of experimental data for composite cathodes, however, is complicated by the mixed conducting behaviour which results in local overpotential distributions throughout the composite cathode. These local overpotentials depend on many factors, such as the composition, particle size, porosity and thickness of the cathode. Reliable experimental data obtained from composite cathodes requires carefully crafted microstructural parameters in order to minimize the overpotential variations. A mathematical model of a composite cathode was developed using coupled differential equations describing transport and consumption of chemical species, oxygen ion and electrons. Simulations under various oxygen concentrations were used to obtain the reaction order of the oxygen reduction reaction. An apparent po2 dependency was then extracted from the predicted Rp vs P02 data. It was found that this p02 dependency can be significantly influenced by the micro-structural parameters of a composite cathode, primarily due to local overpotential distributions.

Rare earth elements have been widely used in various sectors, from the aerospace and steel industries, to electronic applications, particularly in displays and batteries for portable devices. The high demand for newer and better equipment, such as cell phones, tablets and lap tops, has increased the consumption of the rare earth elements and at the same time the need for its recovery from electronic wastes. For that reason, the recycling of batteries is important, principally the Ni-HM batteries, due to their elevated content of rare earths elements, in addition to the high concentrations of cobalt and nickel. The current processes are based on dissolution in strong acid solutions (sulfuric acid concentrations from 2 to 4 mol/L), and temperatures from 30 to 90°C. In the present work, electrodes from spent Ni-HM batteries were leached using 1 mol/L H2SO4, in the presence of ozone as the oxidant, where recoveries of 96% for La, Ce and Nd were obtained at room temperature. The separation of Ni and Co from the leach solutions was performed using an electrochemical reactor, after which rare earth elements were precipitated, obtaining a mixture of its hydroxides with impurities below 1%, according to EDS analysis.

"Recently, significant efforts to improve productivity from the tight intervals of the Mulichinco Formation within the Sierra Chata Field in the Neuquén Basin have been ongoing. Because conventional high quality reservoirs were being developed in this field, a proper reservoir understanding and completion approach was applied. After developing these high permeability reservoirs, the operator began evaluating the tight intervals and new areas within the field, but a completely different approach was necessary to achieve motivating production improvement.An extensive study to help enhance reservoir understanding and identify key factors controlling productivity of these tight intervals (which tend to be in the range of 5 µD) has been ongoing. Some of the issues discussed in this study are 1) petrophysical review, 2) rock properties calibration, 3) geomechanics understanding, 4) faulting and micro faulting/lineaments description, 5) stimulation and completions review and, 6) understanding key production drivers.As in many other tight reservoir projects, a considerable area of the reservoir must be effectively stimulated during the hydraulic fracturing process to achieve economic productivity. Two critical issues hinder these objectives. First, the low permeability in addition to a pore pressure close to or even lower than hydrostatic are critical characteristics when attempting to flow back the well and clean up fractures. Second, very high horizontal stress anisotropy resulting from a strike slip stress regime promotes the generation of simple planar bi-wing fractures. It is well-known that this fracture geometry will contact much less reservoir area compared to more complex fractures, as the operator would normally intend to create at very low permeability reservoirs.This paper discusses these issues and how they were addressed. A pilot drilling and completion program was initiated during 2012 to validate this study. Key factors include well location relative to formation unconformities, their orientation relative to the far field principal stresses, hydraulic fractures generated, and overall completion design."

The Carboniferous sedimentary rocks of southwestern Newfoundland merit investigation because of petroleum, salt and gypsum possibilities and indications of base metallization along the equivalent of the Horton-Windsor con-tact. In this paper, Lower Mississippian (Anguille) strata are divided into three formations: (1) the Cape John below, (2) the Snakes Bight and (3) the Seacliffs. A correlation between these formations and the Craignish, Strathlorne and Ainslie formations of the Horton group? in western Cape Breton Island is suggested. The criteria for the Anguille subdivision are essentially lithological, but preliminary study of included spore assemblages suggests more precise interformational correlations between Anguille and Horton sequences. The re-measured lower portion of the type section of the Codroy group is presented to define more clearly the stratigraphic position of numerous gypsum and limestone beds. These structures are generally designed to handle corrosive liquids and gases and have proved both satisfactory and economical in service in various industries in Canada. The specification of structures will be discussed in relation to materials, construction and workmanship, physical properties and methods of testing.

On September 3rd, 1947, the Acadia Coal Company put into operation a central coal preparation plant. This plant was designed to process all coals mined by this Company in the Pictou County coal field. The problem, briefly, was to make a three-way separation of the raw coal fed into the plant. It was desired to remove all stone, metal, and wood from the marketable coal and to produce a splint coal from the raw material which would be suitable for making power. This splint coal product is belted directly to the power plant which is adjacent to the wash plant. To attain this object it was therefore necessary, first, to wash the raw coal, removing all splint, stone, metal, and wood. The stone, metal, wood, and highest-ash splint had then to be removed by a second washing in order to obtain the lower-ash splint for use in the power plant. The plant is on the east side of the Allan colliery, in the town of Stellarton (see accompanying photograph). It is of steel frame construction with wood siding, covered on the exterior with corrugated galvanized iron. Considerable concrete had to be poured for the foundation piers as the plant site is largely 'fill' ground. This necessitated the construction of extremely heavy footings containing a large amount of reinforcing steel. In all, 884 cu. yds. of concrete were poured for the various pits, tanks, and foundations; its average test was about 3,500 lb. per square inch. At the time the plant was constructed, the steel shortage in Canada and the United States was acute and, in order to obtain steel for the structure which is four stories high- an unused part of the Allan bankhead was torn down. Enough steel was obtained from this demolition to fabricate the new plant.

The cobalt production of the Chemical Metallurgical Division of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited was supplemented, from May, 1962, to June, 1964, by processing 3,500 tons of a calcined cobalt-nickel concentrate. This paper describes the reduction roast -aqueous sulphuric acid leach process and the operating practices employed in recovering cobalt, nickel and copper from this oxidized by-product of a lead-copper operation. Incorporated in this paper is a description of how this process was integrated with the existing ammonia leach -hydrogen reduction process for the recovery of nickel and with the soluble cobaltic ammine process for the recovery of cobalt. Introduction T HE Chemical Metallurgical Division of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, has recently completed ten years of operation utilizing the ammonia leach process for the recovery of nickel, cobalt and copper from sulphide concentrates, matte and other materials amenable to this process. A continuing development program, along with the expansion of certain facilities, has enabled the refinery to attain a production rate of 31, 000,-000 pounds of nickel per year by hydrogen reduction. This represents an increase of approximately 85 per cent over the original design capacity of the plant.

"Le gonflement des boulettes d'hématite à été étudié à l'aide d'une méthode de mesure standard ISO ainsi qu'à l'aide d 'une méthode de mesure dilatométrique.La première méthode a servi à l'étude des boulettes haute silice (5% SiO2) dont l'indice de basicité (IB = CaO + MgO -i- SiO2 + Al2O3) a été ajustée soit à l'aide d'une addition de dolomie, soit à l'aide d'une addition de pierre à chaux, soit à l'aide d'une addition de ces deux composes. L'indice de basicité variait de 0.05 à 0.12. Les résultats de gonfle ment obtenus à 1000?C dans une atmosphère de 40 CO - 60 N2 ont permis de montrer qu’indépendamment de l'indice de basicité c'est la dolomie qui contribue le plus à diminuer le gonflement par rapport à la pierre à chaux. L'utilisation de l'indice de basicité comme critère de sélection des boulettes est discutée.La méthode dilatométrique a servi à l'étude du gonfle ment de deux types de boulettes préparées à partir de deux concentrés de fer et dont la teneur en silice a été fixée à 2.5% et 0 5%. Ces deux types de boulettes ont reçues les mêmes additions de liant en quantité et en nature. La détermination en continue du gonflement, à 950?C dans 40 CO - 60 N2, a permis d'une part de mieux cerner le niveau de réduction auquel correspond le maximum de gonflement et d'autre part de montrer que l’allure des courbes de gonflement est étroitement liée à la nature du liant. Une augmentation de la teneur en silice des concentres contribue à diminuer le gonflement des boulettes.Des essais de réduction de gonflement non isothermes ont été réalisés à des montées de température à 10 et 20?C/min. Les résultats indiquent que le gonflement déterminé dans les conditions non iso thermes est inferieur à celui obtenu lors des essais isothermes. On discute alors de la validité des essais standards de gonflement qui sont utilisés pour prédire le comportement des boulettes lors de leur réduction dans un haut fourneau."

"Part I. - PrinciplesIntroductionIf the oxides of the metals are listed in decreasing order of the magnitude of their heats of formation, the list appearing in Table 1 will be formed. It will be apparent at once that this is essentially the well-known electrochemical series (Table li). The metals at the bottom of the list exhibit great stability and are attacked only by the most violent of chemical reagents. Higher on the list, the metals become more reactive until, at the head of the list, the metals lithium and calcium are unstable in moist air.The reactive metals to be considered lie above manganese. In this group will be found familiar and abundant metals such as aluminium and magnesium, the unfamiliar yet abundant metal titanium, the rare and mysterious metal beryllium, and others of greater or less interest.While these metals exhibit properties as unlike as those of uranium and magnesium, they have in common a specialized and difficult extractive metallurgy. They form compounds of great stability, and their reduction is to varying degrees difficult. The position of a metal in Table 1 (and more particu1arly its position in the free energy column) gives a numerical value to this property.Oxides with low free energies of formation may be reduced with great ease; thus silver and mercury may be produced from their oxides by simple heating in air.Lead, iron, and zinc may be separated from their oxides by heating with carbon to moderate temperatures. Magnesium oxide, on the other hand, .requires a high temperature and very special conditions before it will yield magnesium metal."

When roasting started at Giant Yellowknife Mines in 1949, it became apparent that, to prevent air and water pollution in the surrounding district, it would be necessary to collect the arsenic that was contained in the exit gases of the roaster. The arsenic collection problem was finally solved by the installation of both electrostatic and baghouse collectors. It was realized that a considerable quantity of gold-bearing dust was leaving the roaster with the exit gases. When the collection problem was solved, it was possible to measure this loss. The loss proved to be considerable and it became evident that a substantial quantity of gold could be recovered. Research programs on dust treatment began in 1958, and by May, 1960, the treatment process which is currently being followed was started in the plant. At present, the two electrostatic preci11itators, Operated at temperatures above 600°F, collect the gold-bearing dust.

"AngloGold Ashanti Brasil, with assistance from Sherritt International Corporation, has recently commissioned a new autoclave for the pressure oxidation of refractory gold feeds at their Corrego do Sítio operation in Brazil. Design of the new plant, including feed acidulation, pressure oxidation, oxidized solids washing and solution neutralization circuits, was based on the results of test work conducted by Sherritt at their pilot plant in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. This paper describes the results of the pilot plant study as well as highlights of the design exercise.INTRODUCTIONAngloGold Ashanti Brasil (AGA Brasil) has recently commissioned a refractory gold pressure oxidation plant at the site of the original São Bento operation in Brazil. The design of the São Bento pressure oxidation facility was based on Sherritt technology; Sherritt carried out the original process development test work in the mid-1980s, provided a process design package and detailed specifications for critical pressure oxidation equipment and participated in the training of operators and commissioning of the plant. The São Bento plant was operated between 1986 and 2007, when the original ore body was exhausted (Silva et al., 2004). AGA Brasil purchased the facility from Eldorado Gold in 2008, with the intent of refurbishing the plant to process refractory gold concentrates produced from the nearby Córrego do Sítio mining area.Sherritt International Corporation has a long history in the development and application of commercial pressure oxidation and pressure leaching processes. Sherritt’s development of technology for the pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores and concentrates commenced in the 1980s in collaboration with Homestake for application at the McLaughlin project in California. This was followed by several commercial applications in Canada, Papua New Guinea and Brazil (Berezowsky et al., 1991). More than thirty pilot plant campaigns investigating the pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores or concentrates have been conducted by Sherritt since the 1980s, and projects with Sherritt contributions to the process development studies and/or engineering design account for about half of the commercial plants that have operated to date with this type of process (Collins et al., 2011a; 2011b)."
