IN presenting the following short paper the writer hopes to illustrate some uses of explosives in industrial work under conditions different to those prevailing on mining fields. This paper is based on experience gained at the Newcastle steel works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited. The management had decided that as soon as No. 2 blast furnace which is of an improved design was ready to be put into commission, No. 1 blast furpace was to be dismantled and reconstructed to a similar design to No. 2 furnace. This reconstruction entailed the removal of the brick lining of the furnace shaft, and, also the removal and disposal of the,"salamander" and hearth-lining. For the information of members who may possibly be unacquainted with the term "salamander," it might be explained that this term is used by iron metallurgists to denote the mass of iron and slag formed at the- bottom of the furnace, whilst in commission.The method of disposal depends upon the size and nature of the salamander, and in the case under review it was decided to bury it below the hearth of the 'furnace' to be reconstructed. A passage-way was made in the concrete walls of the cast house, and the sand-filling of the cast house removed sufficiently to allow of the concrete foundations of the furnace being reached. This passage-way was extended until the hearth was encountered. The next operation was the removal of the hearth-lining below the salamander. The removal of the concrete was not difficult...

Multi-seam mining under the western portion of Lake Macquarie NSW commenced in 1982. Up to three seams separated by partings ranging from 10 to 30 metres are mined simultaneously by Newcom Collieries. A feature of these workings is the minimal bedrock cover, which ranges from 130 metres down to only 40 metres. "Surface" subsidence control has an over-riding influence on the design of the workings. Subsidence considerations govern both the selection of the mining method and the dimensioning of the workings. To date, workings have been designed in accordance with the "Wardell Guidelines for Mining Under Tidal Waters". These guidelines are tabulated and evaluated in the light of advances in rock mechanics knowledge and local subsidence data collected since the Guidelines were formulated in 1974. The local and regional stability of shallow workings designed according to the Guidelines is evaluated.

Selective open pit mining for gold has been in progress at Harbour Lights since the onset of mining in March 1985. Selective mining techniques used are similar to those in other recently opened gold mines in Western Australia. However certain practices have been introduced to accommodate the irregular distribution of mineralisation and comparatively high mill tonnage throughput. These include selective mining with large bucket excavators, sequential waste stripping - ore mining normal to the strike of the orebody and sample line preparation and ripping on bench floors. Application of these selective mining practices at Harbour Lights enables the operation to maintain delivery of approximately forty by 50-tonne truck loads of ore to the mill crusher everyday, with limited rehandling of material through ore stockpiles.

There are many critical nodes along the mine value chain, from orebody to mineral product, and inter-disciplinary input is required to analyse the variability and uncertainty at each node in order to identify and mitigate areas of risk. Mining differs from many other industries in that the variability in the product is dictated largely by the inherent nature of the input material (the orebody). The true characteristics, including the variability of the orebody, are never known exactly and are instead based on estimates derived from sample data. A further difference is that bottom-line gains are largely controlled by world commodity prices, which can vary with time, rather than by local supply and demand issues. Methods for identifying, reporting and responding to this inherently variable raw material are discussed. These include analytical and reporting methods, equipment and software, risk analysis and reality checks (eg reconciliation). Sampling results, mineral resource and ore reserve estimates and economic assumptions are a function of the variability of the orebody. Risk quantification should be expressed as a level of confidence, which takes into account the scale or period over which the risk is being assessed (life-of-mine, annual or shorter production periods) and should convey the likelihood, severity and consequence of occurrence of a given event. The future generation of mining specialists needs to understand the entire mine value chain to better manage risks and maximise mine dollar-value.

Author Biography William Poole was born in Sydney, NSW in August 1868. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School. William spent two and a half years as a cadet in the Railway Construction Branch of the NSW Department of Public Works doing office and field work. He then undertook a civil engineering course at Sydney University. Following this he was employed for six years as assistant and resident engineer at the Water Conservation Branch, NSW and was in responsible charge of various field operations, surveys, river gaugings and works of constructions including a large timber weir and also a concrete weir on the Macquarie River, NSW. He then undertook a mining and metallurgical course at Sydney University and became a graduate (BE) with honours in civil engineering, mining engineering and metallurgy. He then spent four and a half years with BHP Co, one and a half years at Broken Hill in the mining and concentration works and three years at the smelting works in Port Pirie, SA, in the latter case he was metallurgist and night superintendent and during that time had responsibility and control at night of the blast furnaces and, during the last 15 months, of the whole of these large works. The author left the Port Pirie, SA works to assume the position of Director of the State School of Mines at Charters Towers and had responsible control of the establishment and also lectured in mining, surveying and structure. William Poole was honoured to hold membership in the following organisations: Assoc M Inst C E, L S of NSW, M Aus Inst M M, Assoc Inst M & M (London).

Production from the Cattle Grid orebody commenced in August, 1974. This followed a recent discovery arising from an extensive exploration programme involving stratigraphic drilling, geochemistry and geophysics. Located some 4 km west of the original copper occurrences at Pernatty Lagoon the discovery was found to contain 4.6 million tonnes of ore averaging 2.4% copper. The ore is a "sandstone copper" type localised near the disconformity between two Precambrian (Adelaidean) stratigraphic units, the Pandurra Formation and the Whyalla Sandstone. The mineralisation roughly follows the interface between these units and occurs in fractures, vugs and along bedding planes. The mineralogical character of the ore is somewhat complex consisting of chalcocite and bornite, with associated chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite and other less common sulphides. 1. The paragenesis of the Escuzar Mine (Andalusia-Spain) comprises: ò major constituents: celestite and carbonated minerals (abundant calcite and less frequent strontianite). ò minor constituents: sulphates (gypsum and anhydrite), clays and some iron oxides and hydroxides. The average content is at about 60 per cent SrSO4. Since liberation size was fine (from 30 to 50 ¦m), the flotation method was chosen. Laboratory batch tests have shown the relevance of using alkylsulphates with as long as possible hydrocarbon chains. The recovery obtained led to an expected 95 per cent SrSO4 concentrate with nearly 70 per cent recovery. Pilot plant tests (160 kg/h) have confirmed these results and attained a recovery of more than 65 per cent of a 96 per cent SrSO4 concentrate. Extrapolation to the industrial scale (14 t/h) has been successfully carried out : up to 600 t of a concentrate at more than 95 per cent SrSO4 has been obtained. Non optimised recovery has already reached 60 per cent for a 97 per cent SrSo4 concentrate.

The use of operational research in mining is illustrated by simple examples of the techniques of simulation, linear programming, theory of sampling, and experimental design.Statistical simulation of the delays in answering telephones was used to compare the efficiency of alarm systems in collieries, and to determine stock control policy for a bin in mucking, filling, and tramming operations. Linear programming was used to help minimize transportation costs between collieries and washeries. The theory of sampling was applied to separate and balance the components of error introduced at the' various stages in the collection and reduction of routine samples of coal, and to the assessment of errors of estimates of grade in orebodies from drill samples. 'l'he principles of experimentaldesign were used to compare wear of different conveyor beltings and costs of battery and diesel locomotives in underground transport.INTRODUCTIONIn operational research some of the procedural techniques and professional attitudes of mind found among scientists and, in particular, mathematicians and statisticians, are applied to operational problems in industry ranging from policy making in the broadest sense to the humblest sampling procedures. These apply in mining equally with other industries.Anyone who reviews a procedure critically and in a systematic way may legitimately claim to be doing operational research. The earliest caveman, very much a minority group, in the face of great adversity and person- al peril, had to take his livelihood by stealth or force of arms - aided by some degree of reas- on and ingenuity. He was pretty much a law unto himself. As time went on, his type became more numerous; and, after bumping heads with the- tough bloke who lived in the cave across the valley, he decided that perhaps he ought to try to get along with him. Perhaps he could trade some over-ripe emu meat for that `roo skin that he had tried to take. Then too, next time he wants a woman, he had better use a lighter club and just stun her a little - that last one was pretty badly bashed. Perhaps he should keep her around the cave and train her to keep the fire going, gather some roots, and skin the game. Those joeys of hers are kind of cute too. Of course they eat, and it would necessitate bringing in more food. So man gained increasing responsib- ilities to his family and neighbours. He domesticated animals, learned that he could cultivate certain plants that were palat- able and would supplement the meat diet, and found that he could modify earth materials to make tools - he became a grazier, a farmer, a miner and a manufacturer. He ceased to be nom- adic and community life came into being. This complicated life and made more rules essential.

A statistical investigation of folding at Mount Isa disclosed similar patterns in both the shales and the "silica dolomite" zones. Analysis of these patterns yields 3 groups of folds fully developed north plunging folds, fully developed south plunging folds, and flexuresrepresenting stages of development of folds. Interpretation of results indicates that a regional force from a southerly direction was responsible for the folding.The general pattern of shearing is allied to that of folding, with the exception of bedding-plane shearing. Many shears resulted from continued application of force on folds which ruptured after overthrusting. Other shears resulted from rupture of the more incompetent shale members, without associated folding. The shear pattern is consistent with the theory of a regional force from a southerly direction.INTRODUCTIONThe notes on folding and shearing presented in this paper are part of a current study of the structural geology of Mount Isa.FOLDING 1Measurement of FoldsInvestigation of folding underground involved the measurement of plunge, strike and dip of the axial plane, and the order of magnitude of each fold, together with its location and the rock type. The total number of folds measured was 701, of which 411 occurred in shale areas and 290 within the "silica dolomite" zones. All folds measured are located on main levels, from 7 level to 13 level inclusive. The sections of the mine involved are the Black Star, Black Rock and Racecourse. Mineral froth flotation is used to separate particles of valuable mineral from its associated gangue. It involves the selective separation of the hydrophobic particles from the slurry into the froth. As air is blown into the slurry, the hydrophobic particles attach to the air bubbles, while the waste particles remain in suspension. While the froth rises up, bubbles start to coalesce and burst, allowing the entrained liquid surrounding the bubbles to drain and return part of the gangue to the pulp. Mineral separation is therefore a function of the amount of valuable material loaded on the bubble shells, as well as the amount of gangue material entrained in the liquid channels separating the bubbles (Plateau borders). As a result, the separation performance of the process is affected by mineral attachment and drainage or bursting in the froth. This study aims to establish the relationship between solids loading, froth stability and separation performance. For this purpose, a series of industrial experiments were carried out to measure mineral attachment as well as bubble bursting by combining direct sampling of the bubble films and video image analysis of the froth surface. This work suggests that the solids loading on bubbles strongly affects the separation performance. The results generally showed that solids loading and concentrate grade are closely related, while froth bursting rate can be linked to the drainage of gangue from the Plateau borders and also to the overall recovery of valuable mineral. It was shown in particular that higher loadings, usually associated with higher froth bursting rates, are indicative of more selectivity in attachment and therefore a higher mineral grade in the concentrate. Additionally, this work suggests that bubble solids loading and froth stability are essential parameters to include in froth flotation models as they allow control and optimisation of the flotation performance.

Skarns typically are zoned and the deposit- or district-scale zonation pattern is an important tool in exploration for skarn deposits. Zonation in individual deposits has been described in many publications, and the general zoning patterns have been summarised by Einaudi, Meinert and Newberry (1981), Meinert (1997), and Meinert, Dipple and Nicolescu (2005). Although zonation is present in most skarns as the result of a basic process of transferring heat and fluids from magmas to wall rocks, the specific zoning pattern in each skarn may vary greatly. For example some zones may be missing entirely or multiple zones may be telescoped. Such variations can be caused by several factors including depth of formation, magma composition, timing of the exsolution of magmatic aqueous fluids, redox state of the magma and redox state of the wall rocks. To use zonation as a predictive tool in skarn exploration, all the controlling factors have to be considered. In this study, we discuss some of the factors that may affect the zoning patterns in Ca skarns. Magnesium skarn has dramatically different mineralogy and is not discussed here. Mesothermal lode-gold deposits often pose problems during sampling because of their complex and erratic gold grade distribution, and the presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation protocols must form the basis of any resource estimate at whatever stage a project is at. Design of a sampling regime must be based upon a thorough understanding of orebody mineralogy and geology. This should include consideration of gold particle size and distribution. The sample type, size and density employed must also be based on the underlying geology of the deposit. Choice of sample preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if fundamental sampling error and analytical errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, consistently understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and bulk leach extractable gold assay. The proportion of coarse gold within samples will have a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assay method. The application of Gy sampling theory can help to reduce errors within the processing of samples of broken rock. Quality control/assurance of sampling regimes must also be critically assessed. The problems associated with sampling mesothermal lode-gold type deposits are presented as case studies from Western Australia and North America.

The Hellyer concentrator of Aberfoyle Limited commenced production in 1989 processing a fine grained, massive sulphide ore containing Zn, Pb, Ag, Cu and Au as values. Four concentrates are produced - copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk (Pb/Zn) - with overall payable recoveries (1991) of 80 per cent Zn, 55 per cent Pb, 50 per cent Ag, 30 per cent Cu and ten per cent Au. Metallurgical development work commenced immediately after plant commissioning, and continues. The flotation response and liberation analysis on a size basis highlighted reagent balance problems associated with tower mill regrinding of sphalerite, poor conditioning of flotation pulps, poor selectivity for fine galena, and insufficient liberation. These were the main causes of values lost to tailings, values reporting to the 'wrong' concentrates and of impurities in the concentrates. Modifications to tower mill regrind circuit operation, and the use of improved conditioning techniques have greatly improved concentrator performance, particularly in the finer (-5 micron) size fractions. Studies of concentrator and laboratory flotation by size and liberation analysis are the basis of diagnostic metallurgy. The techniques used to evaluate the improved concentrator performance are discussed.

The Mt Leyshon Gold Mine is located 30 kilometres south of Charters Towers in Northern Queensland. The current open cut mine has been in operation since 1986. In 1992 a feasibility study was completed that recommended an increase in production to over 240 000 ounces of gold per year. This proposal required an upgrade of the processing plant to five million tonnes per year, and an enlarged mining fleet to provide additional ore, and to meet the increased waste removal requirements. The implementation of the mine expansion program during 1993 required the Life of Mine plan to be extensively revised. This required the assessment and management of potential risks associated with the mine design. The updated geological model using the 1992 drilling results along with the actual contract mining and processing costs were used to establish a series of nested optimised pit shells. The total and incremental quantities and costs were then analysed to determine a suitable pit perimeter. The pit and phase plans were then created and used to devise a staged development plan. The block layout plans for each bench were then established from which a detailed life of mine production schedule was created.

Gravity concentration of tin at Renison Limited uses tables and spirals to treat the various coarser fractions produced from sulphide flotation tailing. An acceptable final tailing cannot be made from one pass over the tables and spirals and therefore the tailing from these separators is reground and combined with the sulphide flotation tailing as the feed to the classification section. The gravity section became increasingly overloaded in the years preceding 1976 due to efforts to maximize tin recovery to the gravity concentrate. In April, 1976, two 2DSV Reichert cone concentrators in series were installed to treat the table and spiral tail- ing stream, prior to regrind, to scavenge a small tonnage of hard, coarse low tin grade material for rejection to final tailing. Gravity section loadings were decreased markedly, allowing operator attention to be directed more to table performance than to spillage collection. An increase in mill throughput of approximately 15% was possible following the commissioning of the Reichert cones. The cones are currently operated to make the minimum tonnage of tailing consistent with reasonable- gravity section loadings.

Basicity(aO2−) has been known to affect the physicochemical properties of molten slags in the metallurgical processes. However, because of the impossibility of direct measurement of single-ion activity, various indirect measures such as capacity, redox equilibrium of transition metal ions, activity of basic oxides, and (theoretical) optical basicity have been proposed; but these basicity measures have been restricted within slag systems and the interaction between measuring elements and slag components has affected the quantitative estimation of slag basicity. Recently, since it was reported that solubility of noble metals in molten slags could be an indirect measure of basicity, the influence of slag basicity on the solubility of platinum and silver has been reported. The reaction mechanism of platinum dissolution into basic slags has been reported, whilst that in acidic slags has not (Nakamura and Sano, 1997; Sano and Nakamura, 1997; Nakamura et al, 1998). Richardson reported that the solubility of metals such as cupper, gold, silver, and lead in the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slag was presumably dependent on the atomic radius and the accommodation ability of the silicate network (Richardson, 1974). Swinbourne and You measured silver solubility in the Na2O-SiO2 slag over a wide range of oxygen partial pressure and suggested that silver would be present as both Ago and Ag0.5 in the slags (Swinbourne and You, 1999). For brevity, these previous works discussed the dissolution mechanism of silver into the slags based on the existence of silver as a neutral or molecular species. However, because the almost chemical reactions occurring in the slag are affected by the basicity, the reaction formula with O2- ion is required based on the ionic characteristics of the slag such as desulphurisation and dephosphorisation reactions as given in Equations 1 and 2, respectively.

A good blasting result is largely achieved by putting the right amount of explosive in the right place and firing it in the right sequence. The best blast design in the world will not break the rock if the planned blast layout is not achieved in the field. One of the critical inputs into a blast design is the diameter of the blasthole. An assumption that the actual blasthole diameter is equal to the nominal drill bit size is generally made. However, a small deviation in the actual hole diameter from that assumed will have a dramatic effect on the hole's volume and, consequently, where the explosive is placed in the blasthole. Any discrepancy in actual blasthole volume from that assumed will be reflected in 'overloading' or 'underloading' of the blasthole with the calculated explosive quantity and, thus, reflect in explosive distribution and stemming lengths. When loading to a 'collar' in an oversized hole extra explosive will be used, resulting in higher than planned powder factors and explosive costs. A blasthole diameter assumed from a nominal drill bit size is an incorrect assumption. This paper will present some actual blasthole diameter measurements illustrating the variation in hole diameters seen in the field and proposes a practical method for achieving a useful blasthole diameter measurement.

Pacific Coal Pty Limited (a wholly owned subsidiary of CRA Limited) managed the interests of six members of a joint venture formed to mine and export eight million tonnes of export quality steaming coal from a mine developed at Blair Athol in the Bowen Basin of the Central Queensland coal fields. The mine is now operated by Blair Athol Coal Pty Ltd. Crooks Michell Peacock Stewart Pty Limited (CMPS) was awarded a project management and engineering contract for the total mine portion. Following a feasibility study, CMPS carried out an Optimisation Study which produced changes to the design of the project, thus resulting in the project budget being reduced by some A$13 million. In spite of a number of late additions to the scope of work, the project was completed at a final cost of A$148 million, many millions below the reduced project budget. The project was also completed several months ahead of schedule. Total services were provided to take the project from feasibility stage through to the establishment of an operational facility and included project management, planning and control, accounting and financial control, as well as the organisation of engineering, procurement, construction, industrial plant commissioning, and technical training matters.

This paper forms part of a series of papers relating to the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop and presented to the Fourth Australian Tunnelling Conference in Melbourne, March 1981. The Design of Electrical and Mechanical Services in Museum Station and adjacent Running Tunnels and their relation to Rail.wruy Operation through the Loop are described. The descriptions, while specific to Muscrio Station, are generally representative of those being provided at Parliament and Flagstaff Stations. The Museum Station comprises some 6500 square metres of platform and track area, 5000 square metres of booking hall concourse and entrances and 1200 square metres of offices and plant rooms. The Mechanical and Ilectrical Services for this complex are .imilar in many aspects to those of a large !.gr.hrise city building, but in general the i::;ign is directed more strongly towards :.arety, durability and reliability, and subject to many restraints imposed by L'mitations of space and accessability.
