An understanding of the way that solutes are transported in mining or natural environments is essential to the development of sound strategies for managing waste disposal. Research on miscible pollutant movement in unsaturated porous media is carried out both experimentally and numerically. Results of numerical modelling are obtained by solving the groundwater flow equation and the solute transport equation. The finite element method is employed and comparisons between simulation results and experimental data are found in remarkable agreement.

Seam gases are the most important atmos- phere contaminants in Australian collieries, their importance increasing with depth; C02 as well as CH4 may be important in intruded envir- onments. The generally high rank of the coal, with low moisture content, makes for abnormal dust production. The other contaminants are introduced and subject to better control, in- cluding products of spontaneous combustion. Due to market situations the generally lower rank and higher sulphur coals more prone to self heating are mined less. Future mining at greater depths should see greater problems with atmosphere contaminants.

Three-dimensional DEM (Distinct Element Method) simulations were conducted in order to examine the performance of screw conveyors, which are installed to transport bulk materials as parts of many industrial machines, including mining and construction machinery. To apply the DEM to the analysis of screw conveyors, we added a spiral object and cylinder objects, which correspond to the helical screw, the casing pipe, and the driving shaft of a screw conveyor. These objects are represented analytically to enhance the precision and efficiency when calculating the interaction between objects and particles. Simulations were conducted for some real applications: inclined and other types of screws, as well as the basic types (horizontal and vertical). Results were compared with previous work and empirical equations. It is concluded that this method is sufficiently well-developed and useful to analyse various kinds of screw conveyors.

The Queensland Mining Act 1968-1972 has now been in force for almost two years. The Act was completely re-written and has made for easier working, e.g., there is no distinction now between Gold Mining Leases and other Mining Leases. For the first time in the history of Queensland, provision has been made for caveats, so that options etc. can be protected. The chief problem which has arisen so far has been the question of the Government issuing mining leases to the holder of an Authority to Prospect over areas which are included iri its Authority. Litigation has taken place and an Appeal, it is understood, will shortly be heard by the Privy Council. The provisions dealing with labour conditions have been brought up-to-date and generally speaking, they are quite clear as to the responsibility of the Lessee. The Mining on Private Land Act has been repealed and the provisions relating to mining on private land are now a part of the Mining Act itself. Two ends of a longwall face are not only concentrated locations of equipment, but also provide ventilation and access. The roof strata stability here has an important influence on mining coal and safety. Based on field obser- vations in the gateways at Zaozhuang Colliery (Shandong Province) and model tests, the author developed a structural model of the overlying strata at the ends of the longwall face - the arc triangular cantilever plate - to which the elastic theory of plates can be applied. Factors influencing the stability of the cantilever plate and its breaking character- istics are discussed. Requirements and design parameters for supports at face ends are pro- posed, based on these factors.

Recent whole-rock geochemical data from nearly 900 fresh drill core and underground samples taken from seven central Victorian gold deposits confirm the presence of distinct and identifiable primary alteration haloes surrounding the deposits. Ferroan carbonate alteration extends for up to several hundred metres away from turbidite-hosted gold mineralisation outside of contact metamorphic aureoles. A less distinct phyllic alteration zone can be identified using geochemical molar ratios or short wave infrared analysis. It generally overlaps a sulfidic halo characterised by disseminated pyrite and in close proximity to mineralised structures, arsenopyrite. The extent of the sulfidic halo can be traced using low-level analysis of pathfinder elements such as S, Au, As and Sb. Recognition of these alteration features enlarges the target for exploration and provides a tool by which drilling can be directed towards mineralised structures. The evaluation of risk is becoming more important in the siting of mining operations in the United States as well as the rest of the world. The determination of environmental, economic, as well as health and safety risks is an important step in the planning of any mining operation. Hydrogeology plays an important role in pre-mine planning and in the determination of these risks. The mine operators must determine if ground water would inhibit mining in any way. Factors which are important to consider include mine dewatering economics, slope stability, and other adverse hydrologic impacts. This paper presents methodologies for the characterization of hydrogeological risks for a mining operation. First of all, the term risk analysis is defined and its utility is addressed. Then, stepwise methods for performing a typical risk analysis are presented. Finally, the application of risk analysis to hydrogeology in mining is given. With slight modification, it is believed that these methodologies can be used to evaluate the hydrogeological risks for any mining operation.

Benchmarking of mining operations has been in vogue for a number of years: it seems teams are forever flying around the world to try to understand what other operations are doing. However, unless a benchmarking exercise involves data gathering at a fundamental level and a rigorous analysis process is applied, the trip will be nothing more than industrial tourism. When benchmarking is performed thoroughly, the range of comparisons that can be made is extensive and informative, and need not be restricted to sites with similar conditions and equipment fleets. This paper describes the detailed and rigorous process for benchmarking used throughout AMC benchmarking studies. The paper demonstrates how, through drilling down to the underlying drivers, the often heard cry of æyou canÆt compare us, weÆre differentÆ can be overcome. Included in the discussion are a number of significant issues that have been identified during AMC benchmarking studies. The paper then considers the types of opportunities that have been identified and the potential for improvement. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for planning, measuring and management of operational performance.

Several types of drainage structure providecost-effective environmental controls for water supply to Charters Towers and its mining industry. Drainage groves maintain bank-levee, channel, pool, and spring structures. Failure of drainage structures leads to anoxic fermentation of channel fill releasing residues, such as arsenic, which would otherwise pass harmlesly by fixed on sedimentary particles.Experiments along drainage structures indicate that productive agroforestry could be integrated with expeditious development of groves to cope with environmental change.

Fluid flow in a 1:14 scale water model of the shaft and settler of the Kalgoorlie Nickel flash smelter has been investigated by flow visualisation and numerical modelling. Detailed flow fields through the reaction shaft, settling chamber and uptake are presented for flow rates up to 800 Vm and a number of burner configurations. The predicted flow fields were compared with experimental data obtained from streak photographs and video recordings. The effects of cessation of flow through individual burners and changes in shaft dimensions were also Investigated.

The term "joint venture" lacks any precise legal definition but is typically used to denote a form of legal relationship which is neither a partnership nor a corporation. Nbst joint ventures are contractual relationships which provide for the sharing of mining leases and production facilities and for the sharing of costs, but which enable each joint venturer to carry on his own separate business. The rationale for such relationships is that each participant: retains independent taxation status may independently grant direct security over his interest in the project assets for financing purposes Bankers prefer to lend to incorporated joint ventures (i.e. corporations in which all of the joint venturers are shareholders) but will lend to individual joint venturers provided the joint venture agreement does not imperil their security; i.e. provided there is a "bankable" joint venture. The carpeting objectives of joint venturers and their bankers may be reconciled and unnecessary conflict avoided by the timely inclusion of appropriate provisions in the joint venture agreement before financing negotiations commence.

The use of secondary desliming cyclones ahead of froth flotation cells to reject ultrafine (-45 ¦m) particles has become a popular option in the United States for preparing fine coal feeds for froth flotation circuits. In light of this popularity, several experimental studies have been performed at industrial plant sites to develop a better understanding of the impacts of ultrafine desliming on froth cell performance and, ultimately, overall plant performance. These studies included an evaluation of various circuit configurations incorporating different flotation technologies (conventional machines and column cells) as well as different dewatering systems (disc filters, screen-bowl centrifuges, and thermal dryers). The data obtained from these studies indicate that deslime circuits offer several important benefits including lower product ash, reduced product moisture, better froth handling characteristics, and lower capital and operating costs. In addition, case studies conducted as part of this investigation have been used to develop generic guidelines for how deslime circuits may be successfully applied to improve the overall profitability of fine coal flotation circuits for both the metallurgical and steam coal markets.

South Crofty's ventilation network is large and complex. Of the total exhaust air quantity 40% enters the mine by leakage routes through old workings, this air carries high concentrations of radon gas and results in the mine becoming a classified work place under the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1985. Improvements in the control of the ventilating air and dilution by increased air quantity have reduced the average contamination to aelow-0.2 WL. The major part of the radon originates from ground water inflows and from concentrations of radium within the mine with direct emanation from rock surfaces being negligible. Of 600 kBgs-1 total radon leaving the mine 93% cannot be accounted for from known and accessible sources.

The EastLink project is a 39 km tollway to the east of Melbourne and includes twin three-lane 1.5 km driven tunnels. The hard rock tunnels are being built to avoid passing the motorway through the Mullum Mullum Valley to help preserve the unique flora and fauna in the area. This paper describes the process of transferring the support requirements from the ædrawing boardÆ to the tunnelling face by integrating the temporary support design with the contractorÆs tunnel excavation and support procedures, including sharing of responsibility between the designer and contractor for selection of the support type and the production of a project specific rock mass classification system to enable more objective determination of ground conditions. The methods developed during the design phase incorporated a formal system of reviews, support selection and feedback by monitoring tunnel and ground responses. During construction, the process was implemented using a set of simple documentation and regular structured communication between the contractor and the designer.

A program of re-planting native mallee trees, which can be harvested on a short rotation cycle, has been initiated in Western Australia to counteract increasing soil salinity in the wheat belt region. Large volume applications for the wood products generated by these plantings are required to improve the returns to farmers. The metallurgical industry is a large-scale user of carbon, and a project was carried out through the Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing to investigate the use of mallee-derived carbons in metallurgical processes. The use of renewable carbon sources, such as charcoal, to replace fossil carbon has the additional benefit of reducing the net CO2 generated by the metallurgical industry. Experiments were undertaken to assess the performance of mallee derived charcoals as reductants for the solid state reduction of ilmenite and for iron ore bath smelting. Rotary drum reduction tests showed that the reduction rate of ilmenite with the mallee charcoal was approximately twice that of Collie coal at the same fixed carbon/ilmenite ratio in the bed. Iron bath and slag bath injection tests demonstrated that the mallee charcoals dissolved readily in molten iron carbon baths and reacted efficiently with iron making slags.

The Tregoora Gold Project is centred around the old Mitchell River Antimony Field located 100 kilometres west-northwest of Cairns, North Queensland. The project is currently the subject of a joint venture between Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. and Hawk Investments Limited.Historical BackgroundThe Tregoora area was first prospected for antimony and gold around 1890. During the periods 1905 to 1914 and 1937 and 1944 approximately 100 tonnes of antimony and an unknown quantity of gold were won from a number of small mines the principal one being the "Retina". A strong increase in the demand for antimony in the early 1970's resulted in renewed exploration activity in the region and the re-development of the Retina Mine. Despite the intermittent interest in the region for antimony it was not until 1984 that the potential of the area for hosting gold resources was realised with the delineation by Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. of a significant gold deposit now referred to as the Black Knight.

This paper describes the conver- gence and load measurements carried out in inclined seams at five longwall faces, two of which were supported by hydraulic props and the other three by conventional timber supports in Karadon-Gelik mine. The minimum support capacities determined in this study are compared with the results obtained from two empirical approaches suggested by Wilson (1975) and Jacobi (1981). The characteristics of hydraulic props to be used and support patterns in the longwalls are found, conclu- sions are drawn and suggestions are made. Design nomograms are prepared for field engineers, in order to be able to approach the problem more confidently and realistically.

FIRST TOWN PLANNING PROPOSALS Initially, accommodation at the minesite was provided at the Pastoral Homestead situated some seven kilometres north-east of the mine and between 1963 and 1966 was the base of the exploration camp. Tents were used for sleeping of 100 men and the Homestead used for dining and office facilities. With the beginning of ore production and shipment due to commence in 1969 a permanent town location was sought. Early town planning studies had been commissioned by Amax Inc. and Colonial Sugar Refining Co. Ltd. and in 1967 The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd. took over the responsibility for putting them into effect. The location chosen was about four kilometres due east of the mine. Certain dominant factors influenced this choice. It was near enough to the mine to share services, yet far enough away not to be affected by dust and noise and received the additional shelter of a range of hills separating it from the mine. A predominant slope to the east provided good drainage and the ground was easy to excavate for services.
