Sampling and analysis of mineral deposits need to be executed without fear or favour of financial or personal impacts. Examples are given to illustrate the effects of departures, witting and unwitting, from correct use of appropriate techniques and/or equipment with emphasis on exploration and mining of porphyry copper deposits of the Pacific Rim. Some of the results of errors on the low and high sides of true value in exploration, resource or reserve estimations and in production caused by sampling and/or sample preparation mistakes, faulty practices, equipment and/or analysis are considered.

The Koongarra uranium deposit was discovered in August 1970 by Noranda Australia Limited. Denison Mines Limited acquired the rights of ownership in October 1980 and has continued the 'struggle' to bring the proposed mine, containing approximately 13 300 tonnes of U308 of Indicated ore and having a value of $1 billion (1984 dollars), into operation. During the 14 years that have passed, the owners have found it necessary to deal with numerous Federal, State and Territory government departments, aboriginal representatives, handle thousands of communications, attend and convene countless meetings and spend millions of dollars. This paper shows how small calculators can be used for ball mill simulations. Two calculations are examined, the first to calculate the mill parameters and the second to predict the mill product. In the case of small programmable calculators the programs for two common models are given.

Pellets were produced from carefully sized iron ore and silica sand fractions, under controlled moisture conditions, using a sealed balling drum. The strength of these pellets was measured as a function of moisture content and particle size. The results showed that the strength of the pellets could be adequately described by a model which equates the strength of the pellets with the negative pressure developed within the porous mass, provided that the particle size distribution was narrow and the mean particle size relatively large. Weinberg, born and educated in Germany, worked in'the American West for 10 years as a mining engineer and metallurgist. He was the first head of the Queensland Smelting Co. and from 1889 through 1915 was a prominent mining figure in Queensland. He was a competent manager at Aldershot, Dapto, and Chillagoe, but always lacked huge ore deposits for his smelters.

Epithermal gold mineralisation was discovered at the Muyup prospect during regional reconnaissance exploration in 1986. Further exploration utilising routine techniques of stream sediment, panconcentrate, rockchip sampling and geological mapping resulted in the discovery of five auriferous vein systems located along northwest-trending fault zones. Scout diamond drilling was conducted on two of the vein systems. Mineralisation is hosted by a poorly exposed, mid-Tertiary volcanic inlier composed of intermediate and minor felsic volcanic rocks intruded by intermediate hypabyssal por- phyries. Gold is wholly contained in narrow steep-dipping hydrothermal breccias and quartz vein stockworks in which chalcedonic silica and fine grained quartz is the predominant gangue with minor adularia, carbonate, and sulphides. Alteration zoning is manifested as intense fracture-controlled silicification mantled by narrow clay-rich envelopes which in tam grade outward and downward into propylitic alteration or unaltered host rocks. Late advanced argillic alteration is superimposed on the vein-related altera- tion assemblages. Alteration assemblages and fluid inclusion data suggest that gold mineralisation occurred in response to episodic hydraulic fractur- ing and boiling of low to moderate temperature, dilute alkali-chloride fluids. The Muyup prospect represents the shallow eroded remnants of an epither- mal gold deposit enriched in Au, Ag, As, Sb and Hg. Low sulphur fugacities reflected by vein and alteration assemblages support an adularia-sericite classification (Heald et al, 1987) for this epithennal gold deposit.

The authors have used the geotechnical study for design of the South Wall of Mt. Newman Mining's Mt. Whaleback Mine to illustrate how geotechnical studies can be economically justified. This is achieved by relating the savings resulting from increased ore recovery and prevention of failure to the cost of the study. An outline of the geotechnical study is provided in the paper, including a brief description of the innovative methods used to investigate geological structure of the mine and descriptions of the methods of slope reinforcement adopted.

At the Red Dome and Mungana deposits in north Queensland, Australia, it is proposed that mineralisation and alteration developed as a "telescoped" overprinting continuum, ranging in style from hypothermal to epithermal, reflecting the major changes that developed in the regional setting over the period circa 325 - 290Ma. Regional assessment suggests that this also applies to many other precious and base metal deposits within a 401an length of the host Siluro-Devonian Chillagoe Formation. A ten stage paragenetic sequence of structural preparation, multi phase intrusion and associated mineralisation, alteration and brecciation is postulated for the Chillagoe district.

There are a number of current theories in relation to methane migration and emission into workings following underground coal mining activity and some controversies do exist. Mining causes changes in the stress regimes in surrounding strata and results in fracturing. Permeability increases and methane flows into workings under a pressure gradient. The effects of stress on permeability depend on the physical properties of the coal and surrounding strata. Methane emission also depends on the original methane content and the proportion which will be liberated. There are several methods for determining in situ methane content and desorption characteristics of coal samples and several methane prediction methods but clearly more research is necessary to achieve an adequate predictive model.

A distinction between sensitivity studies and risk analysis is developed, demonstrating the importance of geological and mining engineering judgement -as applied by experienced practitioners to the analysis and assessment of risk in such projects. In a typical open cast mining operation, investigation of how existing truck performance compares with the highest achievable truck performance is largely neglected. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a computerised system that will provide a systematic method for comparing existing truck operational performance to the highest performance considered achievable. Through analyses of existing versus achievable performances, various inefficiencies associated with truck operations can be identified. These inefficiencies could occur due to machine configurations, haul route design and conditions or operator skill level. Remedial action should then be taken in a timely fashion to better manage these factors and to ensure the fleet is always operating at its peak efficiency.

Laboratory investigations have been carried out on direct leaching of lead-zinc complex sulphide ore and zinc concentrate using ferric chloride. From the investigation it was observed that the use of 0.15 M and 2 M FeC13 gave an optimum dissolution of metal ions from ore and concentrate respectively. The kinetic studies conducted showed that the leaching reaction followed a shrinking core model for galena and sphalerite. The presence of impurities such as pyrite had increased the dissolution rate and reduced the consumption of ferric chloride. Further, the studies were conducted to recover dissolved zinc from the chloride solution by selectively precipitating it as zinc ammonium chloride.

Technical applications of computers within the coal industry are expanding rapidly with an increase in the number of users and user locations. Collinsville Coal Company Pty Ltd is an example of a remote and growing user company which has a Telecom link to MIM's ICL mainframe computer in Brisbane. The Planning Department is one of the technical user departments at Collinsville, with a variety of VDU, plotting and screen graphics hardware supported by the MIM Computing network. Current applications involve the storage, retrieval and manipulation of borehole information, plan and map production, volume calculations from survey data and mine ventilation modelling for underground Operations.

Subsidence issues associated with historic mine workings have highlighted the need for enhanced geotechnical management of the Martha pit over the remaining life. In conjunction with a detailed analysis of pit slope issues a comprehensive geotechnical management plan has been developed at Martha and is being used as the basis for development of similar plans in other Newmont operations.   This paper covers the geotechnical issues facing the Martha operation and the development and application of the management plan.

Current and future methods of data acquisition in hydrometallurgy are reviewed. Hydrometallurgical operations involve a wide range of chemical and physical processes for the recovery of metals and other products from ores and concentrates. Control of such operations requires information on the different liquid/solid and liquid/liquid mixtures being processed. Continuous. data acqui-sition for the liquid phases uses procedures already commercially exploited in other types of chemical plant. The major problem is the lack of robustness of measuring probes. Continuous analysis of the solid phases is much more difficult to-achieve because of the sampling and analytical techniques involved.

This paper is an appraisal of the application of optical-mechanical-scanners operating in the non-photographic infrared wavelengths (3-5 and 8-14 micrometres) to mineral exploration in Australia. Pundamental principles of the operation of airborne scanners and their data output, thermal infrared (IR) imagery, are summarized. It is contended that thermal IR imagery often depicts the distribution of electromagnetic radiation emitted from earth surface materials better than aerial photographic techniques because optical-mechanical-scanners sample wavebands which straddle the wavelength peak of earth surface emission. To illustrate the geological features which such scanners can depict, reference is made to thermal IR imagery of a number of areas in Australia where the technique has been applied for exploration purposes. It's a great pleasure to be here today, for a whole series of reasons. First of all, when I first went to Perth back in 1972, I shortly afterwards began auditing and one of the people to pick on me when I audited the West Australian Newspaper at that time was Patrick O'Connor's father. One way to win a person across when you're auditing and getting picked on is by showing an interest in their children, so I did that and employed Patrick in our firm. In those days, conflicts of interest didn't occur. When I started Normandy, Patrick was one of the first people I went to get to work with me. He very unwisely chose to leave at one stage and you can see he's done extremely well by not staying with us. So it's lovely to have you here today, Patrick. The difference between Patrick and me, now, is that he's kept his hair, and if you're tall enough you can see I haven't.

In a follow-up of 12 production blasts in a quarry at the Mrica project on Java, tightly spaced porous bands were found to govern fragmentation to the extent that the average fragment size k5o was nearly independent of the specific charge within the range 0.30-0.56 kghn3. This fording resulted in a reduction of the running costs for drilling and blasting by 20-40%. Our work has given considerable practical benefits and insights into the blasting process, even if the results were of no direct use to check out fragmentation predictions based on models, which was one of our main Goals.

The sucessful use of sewage sludge in land rehabilitation has been established and there is an abundance of overseas information on sludge reuse. Unfortunately Australia is behind Europe and North America in establishing sludge reuse policies and regulations. In Victoria the EPA has no publicised regulations and no communicated policy for sludge reuse. In the absence of sound regulations the onus is firmly on the operators of sewage treatment works to ensure land application of sludge is safe for the environment.

Laboratory leach tests of Nabarlek uranium ore carried out by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission to compare the effectiveness of Caro's Acid1 (permonosulphuric acid) as an alternative oxident to pyrolusite indicated reduced acid consumption in leaching and lime savings in neutralisation of tailings liquors when using Caro's Acid. Interox Chemicals Pty. Ltd. arranged a plant trial for Caro's Acid at Queensland Mines Nabarlek Plant. The trial confirmed that significant savings in acid and lime can be achieved under plant conditions. Plant operations also demonstrated improved redox potential control was possible using Caro's Acid.
