The procedures for an audit and review process upon which continuous improvement programs may be based are described. The case for regular audits of mining operations to establish performance trends is advanced. Analysis of performance data using the parameters of the capacity equation used in conjunction with learning curves is described. The extrapolation of learning curves in performance target setting, operating and capital cost budgeting is advocated.

Spiral separators have been used to treat heavy mineral sands in Australia for some thirty-five years. They were used as the primary treatment method until the advent of the Reichert cone, which largely replaced them, due to its compact design and relative ease of operation. Spirals continued-to be used as the final cleaning stage before dry separation of the heavy minerals as they remained the most efficient separator for this purpose.

This paper will outline the design process, and the constmction and rehabilitation techniques proposed for the external waste dumps associated with the mining of the Wolfang Basin coal measures.The basin is located to the north of Clermont and immediately west of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, Australia. Development of the Clermont Coal Mine is planned for the mid-1990s after adequate sales commitments are obtained to allow the project to proceed.

The N.S.W. Department of Mineral Resources commissioned its first Mobile Gas Laboratory in 1973.Although originally intended for diesel exhaust analysis, it has been progress- ively made more suitable for mine air analysis. Currently there are two upgraded units in operation. These laboratories have been used at the scenes of four mine fires, two mine explosions and three recovery operations. The authors' experience jointly covers all of these incidents. In this paper they recount the role of the Mobile Laboratory in each incident - including the difficulties encountered - and trace the development of these units to their present state. Future improvements are foreshadowed, and some comments offered concerning the likely future role of these vehicles in mine Emergencies.

The general structure of microprocessors and their method of use is described, and de- tails given of their application in two parti- cular examples of instrumentation for mineral concentrators. One is in a pulp density gauge, and using this example, the way in which a microprocessor-based unit can be made to be self-calibrating is described. The other is in an on-stream analysis detector for uranium in solvent, where a microprocessor is used to re- place a mini-computer.

Naturally occurring organic plastics have been in use for over 2,000 years. Plastics based on chemically modified organic polymers date back only about 100 years, and those based on synthetic polymers about 50 years. The development of ,these two latter groups up to the present day is outlined, and the basic techniques currently available for polymer-building and modi-fication (blending, copolymerisation, quantitative and qualitative struc-tural control, and'si de-group reactions)-are reviewed.

With the evolution rate of technologies, earthmoving equipment users are establishing vision statements for their operation out to and in some cases beyond 2000. Autonomous systems are receiving a lot of 'press' - and rightly so, as they hold a potential for achieving quantum leaps in productivity and cost gains. Caterpillar feels that it is important that the infrastructure of on-board systems are understood and can be utilised more in the near term to `grow' a user up to the stage of autonomous operation.

Two methods of Monte-Carlo simulations, one suggested by Matheron (1972) and the other by Rudenno (1983), have been tested for simulating coal deposits. To do this 2160 values of ash percentages were simulated using 60 known data points in a two dimensional grid, 20 m x 40 m. 1L is found that while both methods conserve the mean of the known distribution in the results of the simulations, only the first method reproduces the spatial covariance (i.e. the variogram), of the experimental data. The results show that for simulation of regionalized variables only the first method tested yields the desired results.

The development of mathematical relationships to describe grinding in continuous rod and ball mills has involved two methods of approach and has resulted in two main types of "model." The first which has been used for full scale grinding systems has depended on the analysis of, for example, the effect of change in solids feed rate on the changes in overall size distribution which the feed undergoes to become the product as a result of passage through the mill operated under steady conditions. The experimental phosphate mine of abu Tartur has been recently placed into production. Some problems'have been encountered in maintai- ning grade control due to the differences between early block estimates and actual produ- ction grade. An area of 100 km2 is evaluated by using four methods of evaluation , namely polygonal, inverse distance , inverse distance squared and geostatistical methods. The results of calculations are compared statistically with the control values of grade and thickness. The comparison showed that the. kriging technique gave better estimations for the relative ore reserved, while for grades or thickness any of these techniques except the polygonal can be Used.

The excavation of sandstone of generally medium strength for the Liverpool Link Line by Dosco Mark 2A Roadheaders has demonstrated the versatility and good performance of road- headers in suitable rock formations. A description is given of the strata traversed by the tunnels together with descriptions of equipment and crews, excavation sequences, operating difficulties and the results achiev- ed. In addition tunnel construction is des- cribed for a difficult section where there was only O.Sm clearance between invert and a four lane vehicular tunnel below, and O.5m clearance between tunnel crown and a century old sewer above.

As you heard, I was mainly involved for a very long time in the purchase of iron and steel raw materials for Nippon Steel Corporation. A device has been developed for modelling the behaviour of coal under conditions which may lead to spontaneous combustion. It is designed to model the behaviour of a stockpile of large mass. The apparatus can test coal samples taken from the flow stream from mine through washing, stockpiling and transportation to the point of utilisation. It tests samples in an as received' condition and so takes into account the effect of aspects such as particle size and moisture content on propensity for spontaneous combustion to occur. Results of the preliminary tests undertaken are given and future applications of the apparatus are Discussed.

Mining and metallurgy are more capital intensive than all other industry in Australia. Capital demands are met by domestic and foreign sources of finance for whom the major constraints are the supply of funds and factors of risk and uncertainty. in both mineral development and institutional financing policies, specific options are available to administrators which would allow mining to benefit from a more reliable supply of capital. The strength of major partners involved and overseas participation are important aspects of financing mineral developments. Future changes in financing for the mineral industry are considered most likely in variable interest rate funding, in the leasing of major plant items, and in the development of flexible techniques to ease the burden of infrastructure costs. In a consultancy sense, financiers are available to mining to assist with and to advise on optimal develop- ment of mineral industry projects.

Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health rleterinratinn_

The Canadian Cordillera contains numerous classic porphyry deposits and several unusual subtypes, including the alkaline suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and the Tombstone magmatic suite and associated Au¦W deposits. The alkaline suite formed in collisional settings in island arcs whereas the Tombstone suite was emplaced in an active fold and thrust belt in a continental arc. In addtion to different regional settings, these suites differ in the type of underlying basement, metallogeny, and the styles of mineralization. Both magmatic suites were emplaced over short intervals, probably in response to specific tectonic events. In the case of the alkaline suite, the tectonic event promoted magmatic processes suitable for the formation of porphyry Cu-Au deposits. The tectonic environment is less well constrained for the Tombstone suite, but the result was the formation of distinctive porphyry and intrusion-related Au¦W deposits.

The liquid products of low-temperature carbonisation of coal are of variable composition, very much influenced by the rank and type of coal, and process parameters. In general the tar contains a high proportion of phenols and a low proportion of bases. The neutral oil is more analogous to a thermally cracked petroleum oil than to a high temperature tar. Present practice and possible future trends in the production of chemicals and liquid fuels from low temperature tar are reviewed in the light of recent work on the detailed composition of the tar The phenols and aromatics will probably continue to be of most value, with the bases a useful source of spec- ialty products. However the high aliphatic content of the neutral oil (particularly 1-olefins and n-paraffins) is bound to receive more attention for chemicals as well as for liquid Fuels.

The Mineral Resources Act 1989-90 came into force on 1 Septem- ber 1990 and the Second Schedule of this Act set out the Savings, Transitional and Validation Clauses to this legislation. The Second Schedule gave rise to a number of interesting situa- tions however due to the fact that the time set aside to attend to these matters (the prescribed period) has now expired, with the exception of the points raised below, most of these situations are now history and are of no relevance. The Transitional provisions of the Second Schedule provided for a three month "prescribed period" in which certain actions were required to be undertaken to ensure tenements granted or applied for under the repealed legislation transitioned into the framework provided by the Mineral Resources Act. This Second Schedule of the Mineral Resources Act highlighted a number of anomalies which are still worthy of mention and are listed below.

In recent years there have been a number of excellent towns built for mining communities in remote parts of Australia. Planning has been thorough, and very large capital expenditures have been made by companies to provide high standards of accommodation, services and amenities. But so often the phrase 'company town' comes to be applied, expressing the frustrations of the residents, working for a single employer who dominates their lives, and of the company, which would prefer not to have to build and operate a town. The much-vaunted early success of some iron ore, bauxite and coal projects has led to a belief that the success of all mining projects is assured. Those holding this belief ignore the vagaries of mineral deposits and of markets, and the need to amortise large high-risk capital expenditures, much of which is spent on social and industrial infrastruc- ture. AXTAT is a computerised system developed by the Western Australian Department of Minerals and Energy in conjunction with the local mining industry for recording and retrieving information about fatalities and work related injuries. Since its inception, the system has gained considerable recognition by consistently demonstrating its usefulness as a tool, not only to the Department, but for the entire industry nationwide. AXTAT has played an important role in the continuous improvement process in management of occupational health and safety in the Western Australian mining industry with gains in both human and financial terms, by regularly providing timely and accurate statistical feedback on fatalities and lost time injuries to industry.
