The 250 metric tonnes of gold and 360 000 metric tonnes of copper recovered from the Mt Morgan Mine in Central Queensland justify its fame. The mine ceased operation before the advent of three-dimensional computer graphical modelling of orebodies became common practice in mine planning. The Mount Morgan Mine records however remain and are the database for this study. The Mount Morgan project takes ore deposit modelling one step further by examining the relationship between grade distribution within the orebody and key geological features, as a tool for exploration and development.The Mount Morgan gold and copper mineralisation is shown to be strongly lognormally distributed. The deposit has been split into three areas, using geological boundaries, each with different geostatistical characteristics. Important features include: the spatial relationship of near-vertical, high grade shoots with a ring dyke thought to be related to the North Dyke; separation of the high grade eastern stopes from the others along the Andesite Dyke; and lack of concentrated mineralisation along the Slide Fault.Recognition of these features is useful to those currently exploring the Mount Morgan district for similar style deposits, by stressing the importance, or lack thereof, of the geological features.

Stressed steel cables, similar to those used in pre-stressed concrete, have been used for rock mass reinforcement, in civil engineering, for many years. This type of reinforcement has been attempted for open pit wall support, on several occasions, but has never gained wide acceptance as a practical approach because of high cost and complexity of installation in a mining environment. On the other hand, untensioned, fully grouted cable dowels (cable bolts) have gained wide acceptance for ground support in underground mining and it is perhaps surprising that this technique has not been used to a greater degree in open pit mining. The first systematic application of this technique in Australia was at the Mary Kathleen uranium mine in 1976, where it was spectacularly successful in maintaining steep stable walls in a jointed rock mass with unfavourably dipping structures. Cable bolting, and other techniques, are now being used to an increasing degree for wall support in both small and large open pits, for two basic applications: 1. stabilisation of potentially unstable sections of a wall, or 2. to allow steeper walls and reduce waste stripping volumes. In virtually every situation, wall rein- forcement has significant economic as well as technical advantages. The paper describes the development of the techniques, the mechanisms of wall support, the methods used, and discusses several case histories of its application to Australian open pit mines.

The increasing use of continuous miners in the extraction of high coal seams has amplified the need for enhanced ventilation systems in the headings. Owing to larger face dimensions and higher production rates, more ventilating air is required to effectively dilute liberated methane to acceptable concentrations. However, the increased air quantities raise and entrain greater amounts of dust, to which the operator is subjected. Various methods (eg sprayfans, on-board scrubbers and jet fans) are used in various configurations and combinations to ventilate the headings. These arrangements generally result in a complex air flow pattern, which complicates achieving an optimum balance between diluting methane and minimising dust capture. In order to cost effectively investigate and propose solutions to this problem for the South African coal mining industry, the Division of Mining Technology has embarked on an extensive work program to evaluate various ventilation methods presently in use. Four currently generic ventilation patterns in various heading scenarios have been simulated using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) computer program. Evaluating these outputs against a predetermined set of criteria allows the best system for a particular situation to be chosen. The program also facilitates fine-tuning of an adopted system without incurring the cost and inconvenience of doing such tests in situ. This process not only provides solutions at significantly reduced costs, but also yields deeper insights into the factors affecting heading ventilation than hitherto possible.

A better understanding of the hydrogeology within mine waste rock and cover systems is essential for the quantification, prediction and prevention of metals loading to the environment surrounding waste rock piles. The effect of surface condition on the internal flow mechanisms within an intermediate-scale constructed waste rock pile is being investigated at the Cluff Lake Mine, Saskatchewan. Changes in the water balance, the outflow distribution and water residence time have been observed in the waste rock pile following successive modifications of the surface condition. The three year old, run of mine, free-dumped surface was ripped to a depth of 30 cm to 40 cm, and levelled in October of 2001. In August 2002, a 10 cm to 15 cm cover of compacted waste rock was placed on the pile. Outflow, precipitation and run-off data collected during natural and artificial rainfall events have been used to quantify the maximum infiltration rate, and the spatial pattern of discharge and cumulative volume of water that infiltrated into the waste rock under each surface condition. Infiltration data together with the outflow data provide a basis to address the residence time of water within waste rock and the dominant flow mechanisms for different surface conditions. With a free dump surface spatially distinct wetting fronts are observed at the base of the pile that vary in flow rate by an order of magnitude (measured at a 2 m by 2 m scale) and in time by up to a week. Following ripping and levelling, similar cumulative outflows were observed, but the magnitude and arrival time of wetting fronts changed across the pile. A decrease in outflow volume, a decrease in infiltration volume, a two-fold increase in the response time of wetting fronts and a more spatially uniform distribution was observed following placement of the compacted surface layer. Based on preliminary data, the internal structure appears to be the dominant factor controlling outflow variability.

The Mt Todd Project is located 42 km northwest of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The identified mineral resource estimate for the Batman gold deposit is 66.7 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t). Proved and Probable Ore Reserves total 42.3 Mt grading 1.5 g/t. Orebody definition and reserve estimation is based on extensive percussion and diamond drilling. Exhaustive bias analysis comparing grades produced from different drilling techniques has been undertaken. Similarly, detailed check assaying programs have been run to validate grade data produced by commercial laboratories used during the exploratory drilling phase. Significant biases were established from both studies and appropriate 'corrections' were made to drillhole databases prior to final resource and reserve estimation. 3D geostatistical modelling has been utilised for resource and reserve estimation, with specialist consultants contracted for this work. Fission track thermochronology is a well established method for reconstructing the thermal histories of rocks with particularly important applications in tectonic studies, detecting low-grade thermal events, sedimentary basin analysis and resource exploration. These applications take advantage of the limited stability of fission tracks, especially in apatite, when exposed to the temperatures found in the upper 3-4 km of the crust. Apparent fission track ages in apatites can define an invisible 'stratigraphy' in otherwise homogeneous rock masses that can give valuable information on thermal, tectonic and erosional events. Quantitative modelling of the thermal annealing of tracks in apatite shows that distinctive profiles of apparent fission track age can be related to a number of simple thermal history styles. The main types of profile observed tend to be either an essentially linear decrease of apparent age with increasing depth, which relates to continuous uplift and denudation, or a concave-upwards profile produced by partial annealing in environments of tectonic stability or burial. More complex thermal histories produce compound profiles which are essentially just combinations of these two elements. Track length information allows the apparent age profiles to be interpreted in much greater detail. Examples of the major profile types have now been identified in various geological environments and can be analysed to give information about, for example, uplift and denudation rates, the timing of uplift or low-grade thermal events and maximum palaeotemperatures experienced during burial.

Future hard rock mining will gradually move towards complete mechanisation which lends itself to remote control and ultimately to robotic mining. This will require different technical inputs into mining engineering and one of these is in the area of rock'mechanics. Traditional hard rock mining has had little rock mechanics input. Problems arising from high stresses and poor ground conditions have in most cases be remedied after they occurred, in the worst case by abandoning a particular stope or area and starting elsewhere. In a fully mechanised remote or robotic mining situation the financial penalty for such an approach could be severe, as a major part of the production costs will be in the development and the equipment. It is therefore imperative that a complete rock mechanics feasibility study is undertaken before an area is set up for robot mining and that a continuous stability monitoring system is installed that will predict rock behaviour well in advance of mining, such that the necessary ground control measures can be implemented without impeding the continuity of mining. This system will utilise already existing instrumentation such as extensometers and stress cells, and possibly additional improved instrumentation which has to be developed for this particular Application.

The geographical region of South East Asia is variously defined, but generally agreed to include the Asean group - Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. Other regional countries, such as Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Kampuchea etc. are of course geographically part of the region, however in economic terms, they play a minor role. It is the Asean group that dominates present economic activity and provides the overwhelming opportunity for commercial development. My experience in South East Asia has been gleaned over 15 years of regular travel in the region. More recently, we have established company offices in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia to extend and deepen contacts with major customers. This progressive development is an integral part of a planned growth pattern and will be discussed in more detail shortly. South East Asia is a rapidly developing economic growth centre, a fact which is clearly recognised and accepted by most commentators. An important question is then to be asked: Why has the region been relatively neglected by Australian, U.S. and European industrial supply companies? I will attempt to address this question in the context of industrial minerals and propose some ideas as to how effective sales programs could be developed. Firstly, let's consider the market potential provided by countries within the region. It is reasonable to suggest that industrial growth in S.E. Asia over the past 20 years has been generally steady and in some cases, explosive. Until recently, this growth has predominantly been driven by development of internal (regional) demand. Population growth and rising living standards have ensured that basic industries have enjoyed a solid uptrend in sales and production. The industries which most benefitted from regional economic development over this period were, interestingly, those which we understand to be major users of industrial minerals - glass, ceramics, paper, surface coatings, cement, refractories, rubber and plastics. Each of these industrial sectors has been influenced by different growth stimulii over a 20 year period. Nevertheless, they also enjoy a common feature which ensured an above average performance. All sectors are fundamental to an environment enjoying rising living standards and rapid growth in general prosperity. More recently, internal growth factors have been overtaken by a recognition that manufactured products from the region are competitive in export markets. This comparatively recent development provides the most interesting possibilities for higher value industrial mineral raw materials. Let me explain: For 20 years, industrial growth in South Asia has essentially been focused on satisfying domestic demand. Finished quality of manufactured items was orientated to a developing market more interested in cost than aesthetics or long life. This was reflected in raw material specifications, which often did not exist and at the best were undemanding.

Hematite ore has been mined in the Southern Middleback Ranges as blast furnace feed for the steelworks at Whyalla, by what was then BHP, since 1991. With the floating of BHP Integrated Steel as OneSteel in 2001 and the subsequent loss of key mining personnel, breakdowns in grade control methods and procedures occurred. These were compounded by changes in orebody characteristics and grade distribution leading to poor reserve recovery and poor grade control, both which resulted in loss of control of ore specification and severe deviation from the mining schedule. As a result, a total review of grade control, mining method and scheduling procedures was undertaken as well as a review of contractor quality assurance. It was found that sampling methods were poor and unrepresentative, grade control blocking processes were outdated and did not reflect the geology of the deposit, the ore mining method was outdated and did not respect the geometry of the orebody, reconciliation methods were being completed globally and were not reflective of individual areas of the deposit, and that deviations from the mine plan were occurring due to access to high-grade areas outside the schedule in order to bring stockpiles back on grade. Based on these findings, updated sample splitter systems were fitted to drill hole rigs, double bench sampling was implemented (2 + 4 m samples as opposed to 1 + 8 m sample) and a three-dimensional cellular grade control system introduced to better reflect the geology and orientation of the deposit. At the same time ore mining was changed from front end loaders mining on 8 m benches to excavator mining on three lifts on 8 m benches; this aided selectivity and respected the geometry of the orebodies aiding cleaner recovery. Reconciliation is now completed on a blast-by-blast basis, which allows for quick and easy identification of poorly performing areas of the resource model that can then be incorporated back into resource model updates. Regular daily and weekly meetings are also held with emphasis on the mining schedule to ensure no deviation from the schedule in the long term. These improvements have resulted in a lift in reserve recovery both globally and locally associated at the same time with improvement in grade.

The Barrick Osborne concentrator has gone through a number of upgrades since commissioning and steadily increased production from the original 119 t/h design capacity to 265 t/h milling throughput in 2008. This was achieved incrementally over several years, by maximising operating efficiencies, in order to minimise capital expenditure, and take advantages of economies of scale; but more importantly it was reached with no measurable loss of recovery. Osborne currently processes a blend of under- ground with open pit material from the nearby Trekelano deposit. Following primary/secondary crushing, the material is processed through a rod/ball mill grinding circuit ahead of rougher/scavenger flotation that produces a copper concentrate.Osborne was seeking a further increase in plant throughput of the order of 15 per cent, but at more sustainable levels of secondary crusher plant utilisation. In early 2008, Osborne contracted Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific and South America (MMPT) to review the entire process from run-of-mine feed to final copper concentrate. This review would be done concurrently, with surveys of both the crushing/ grinding and flotation circuits being performed at the same time. The outcome would be a steady-state model of the complete flow sheet allowing the crushing/grinding model to interact with the flotation circuit model such that overall process optimisation was possible. Two key outcomes for the operation are exploration of the operating limits of the currently installed plant, and projection of the logical next stage of potential capital plant expansions. This paper covers Part B or the flotation component of the project. A separate paper discussing Part A or crushing and grinding is also being presented at this conference. Surveys of the Osborne flotation circuit were performed along with a comprehensive review of the cell characteristics including measurements of the gas and froth phases of individual flotation cells. These data resulted in a size-by-size floatability component model of the complete circuit. This circuit model was then used to perform steady-state simulat- ions to evaluate options to improve both overall circuit and individual cell performance. The grinding circuit model discussed in a separate paper or Part A of this project was then used interactively with the flotation circuit model to recommend the best operating regime to maximise overall efficiency. For example, the balance between increased crushing and grinding costs versus higher copper recovery and final concentrate grade. Due to changes in market conditions in the fourth quarter of 2008, the focus was shifted to prioritising operational changes rather than capital expansion modifications, in order to improve circuit performance.

It is well known that some sinkholes or subsidence take place from time to time in the areas where abandoned room and pillar type mines exist. The authors have been involved with the stability of abandoned mines beneath urbanized residential areas in Tokai region and there is a great concern about the stability of these abandoned mines during large earthquakes as well as in long term. The 2003 Miyagi Hokubu and 2011 Great East Japan earthquakes caused great damage to abandoned mines and resulted in many collapses. Particularly the effect of the quality of backfilling of abandoned mine below the urbanized areas is very important under static and dynamic conditions. The authors present the effect of the quality of backfilling on the ground subsidence associated with abandoned lignite mines under static and dynamic conditions and discuss its implications on the urbanized areas above abandoned lignite mines in this study. The purpose of this work is to determine the equilibrium-state of the aqueous-solution which is produced by the leaching processes, including natural weathering of pyrite minerals. The latter can lead to acid-mine-drainage (AMD). The ferric iron species (Fe3+) resulting from bacteria-catalysed oxidation of ferrous iron (Fe2+), in the presence of water and air, is known to bring about steady-dissolution of minerals chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS), pyrite (FeS2), and so forth. Good-aeration, relatively high-porosity and sufficient bacterial activity tend to promote leaching in waste-rock-dumps. The composition of the aqueous-phase that accumulates in the pore-space (or in open-pits) is of practical interest as it would strongly influence the leaching of both sulfide and non-sulfide minerals. Since the reactions among the various ionic species occur relatively fast, the solution-phase may be regarded as approaching a state of virtual-equilibrium and it is possible to determine by computation the respective concentrations of the many dissolved species. For the Cu-Fe-H-O-S system, these species may include: H+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu2+, HSO4-, SO42-, OH-, CuSO4o, H2O, Fe(OH)+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe2(OH)24+, Fe(SO4)+, Fe(HSO4)+, Fe(HSO4)2+, and Fe(SO4)2-. The aqueous-system which may be constituted from appropriate mole-quantities of H2SO4, FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3, and CuSO4 is in fact the result of various natural processes (reactions) and due respect must be accorded to the extents of these reactions. The present model computes the equilibrium molalities of the foregoing ionic and neutral aqueous species, using the iterative equilibrium constant method that ensures strict-adherence to charge-balance and elemental molar-balance constraints. The dissolving sulfide-minerals (FeS2, CuFeS2) consume Fe2(SO4)3, H2O, and O2 and yield FeSO4, H2SO4, and CuSO4 while the aqueous-phase tends to become progressively acidic (declining pH) reflecting the gradual increase in the extents of sulfide-dissolution reactions. The equilibrium-state of the solution-phase is computed for specific set of values for the extents of respective reactions. The temperature and pressure of the system are 25¦ C (298.15 K) and 101.325 kPa (1.0 atm), respectively. The mica-like minerals such as the biotite [H2K(Mg,Fe)3Al(SiO4)3] tend to consume much of the H2SO4(aq), with the extracted K+, Mg2+, Fe2+ and Al3+ ionic species accumulating in the solution. The precipitation of the jarosites (potassium, hydronium, or ammonium) contributes to the removal of ferric and ferrous species from the solution-phase. In the present work, the emphasis is on predicting the compositions of the aqueous- and condensed-phases with advancing time or increasing æextent of reactionÆ. The results of such calculations are compared to published data on raw AMD (acid-mine-drainage).

The structural pattern of Victoria shows the presence of EW, NW, NE as well as the more readily recognised NNW factors commonly associated with the goldfields. ENE and WNW trends are also present. This structural lattice affects all rocks of the State. Landsat imagery shows that the EW, NW and NE structural elements are closely related spatially to the distribution of Palaeozoic igneous intrusives, Cainozoic volcanic vents as well as all historically important gold mines. It is suggested that the EW, NW and NE structural grid visible on landsat imagery is a reflection of the structure of a mid-crustal layer situated between 3.5 and 17 kms below the surface. The points of intersection of the structural elements of the mid-crustal layer offer most favourable loci for the escape of energy in the form of heat. The correlation between the distribution of igneous plutons, volcanic vents and centres of mineralisation, all reliant on high levels of energy for their formation, indicates the stability of the structures of the mid-crustal layer since early Palaeozoic times. The deep level crustal structures are believed to be, related to the release of stresses placed on the crust since early Palaeozoic times by the rotation of the Earth. A geological model that accommodates the presence of a mid-crustal layer as well as the complexities of the recognised orogenic cycles of southeast Australia is suggested. All 1 000 kg Au reef and deep lead mines fall within 1.5 and 2.5 km respectively of strong linears associated intimately with plutons and volcanic vents. Future exploration of the State is more likely to meet with success if it too is confined to the evaluation of these and similar linears. The mode of mineralisation of any one centre will depend upon the temperature, pressure and geochemical gradients operating on the migrating mineralising fluids as well as the structures in the host rocks. These factors are likely to have varied considerably from one centre of mineralisation to the next and consistency of mineral isation form and depth should not be expected along the length of any single Linear.

The processes most likely to be adopted for beneficiating ores or concentrator streams containing a large proportion of particles finer than 10 um are froth flotation, selective flocculation, wet magnetic separation and selective leaching. Flotation will be made more efficient for very fine particles if ways can be found to selectively flocculate the valuable mineral beforehand (floc-flotation), to produce smaller bubbles and to reduce entrainment of ultrafine gangue. Schemes for selective flocculation have proved difficult to implement because of the delicate balance between surface forces (electrostatic, dispersion, hydrophobic) and hydrodynamic forces, that determines flocculation, and the changes which occur to particle surfaces through hydrolysis, oxidation-reduction and cross-contamination between minerals in aqueous suspensions. The search for a better understanding of selective adsorption of flotation collectors and flocculants continues and will be particularly important for the practical success of selective flocculation and selective magnetic coating.

Rock mass classification systems for stable excavation design have been studied. The parameters which are important in such a classification system and those which should be included in a classification system formulated to predict explosive fragmentation behaviour are briefly reviewed and compared. There is significant overlap in the data requirements for excavation design and explosive blast de- sign. Recently there has been a trend to ob- tain some of the data required for excavation design by the use of both field and laboratory seismic investigations. The theory of seismic techniques is summarised and the results of seismic investigations carried out for excava- tion design are reviewed. On this basis it is considered that seismic techniques have the potential to be used for data collection prior to blast design. A programme designed to de- velop such techniques and which includes both field and laboratory experimentation is Presented.

Over the past several years, copper prices have surged from under a dollar to over three dollars a pound. However, the long-run trend in real copper prices since at least the early 1970s has been sharply downward. While many now contend that the long-run trend in real copper prices is now upward, the result of structural changes in this market, others are sceptical. Nor is copper unique; the prices for a number of other metals, including aluminium, iron ore, lead, nickel and zinc, have followed similar patterns. This paper examines the forces behind short-run and long-run trends in metal prices. It first focuses on the short run, where it argues that shifts in demand are largely behind changes in prices. It then turns to the long run, where it concludes that production costs and supply largely govern price trends. Finally, it explores several implications of these findings, including those for diversification and market risk, for forecasting mineral prices, for assessing the growth of metal demand in China and elsewhere on metal prices, and for changes in the long-run price trends.

Marketing of mineral products has not yet succumbed to the degree of pre- dictability and exactitude that is fam- iliar to the engineer or metallurgist in pursuing their profession. Whilst the Great Market of the world economy dic- tates circumstances for the sale of min- eral products, there are more than just buyers and sellers in the determination of the revenue received by the producer. For the engineer or metallurgist he will be required to gain an understanding of these participants and of the peculiar languages of the market place. This will be only one of his tasks in learn- ing to communicate with society, as his responsibilities increase as he climbs the ladder of success. There is un- doubtedly a need for better statistical information so that producers and sell- ers can make an appropriate and earlier response to market conditions. There is in addition, a need for more aggressive concern by raw material producers for the development and promotion of better end use of their products. Undoubtedly the marketing of mineral products will be more influenced by the direct involv- ment of government agencies than has been the case in the past. Whilst that 1. As an indication of the overall quality for the three periods the expected run of mine ashes are given. Operating Period R.O.M. However the ash, particularly in the smaller fractions, was found to be higher due to the previously mentioned friable nature of contaminant material. Following evaluation of this additional information, the proposed washery design was reconsidered. Three basic process schemes were examined. 1. A jig with two-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for treatment of three different size ranges. 2. A heavy medium vessel, two-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for the different size fractions. 3. A jig for initial treatment of the total feed (that is all sizes) with single-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for rewashing of the intermediate and smaller size Fractions.

I must tell you at the outset that I come to this conference deeply disturbed at the `role of Government in international dealings in mineral and energy resources'. I am disturbed by the confusion that now passes for policy. I am disturbed by the short- range view of critical problems taken by a majority of Governments. I am equally disturbed by the even shorter range of view taken by a growing army of industries. Many of them clamour for Governments to solve their problems in a specific way, with little regard for any other sector but their own-and with even less regard for the fact that every time a Government takes over some of their responsibilities they surrender some of their freedom. I would not say that longer range views don't exist. But I would say that they don't prevail at the present time. Instead, we are seeing the con- stant development of many policies for individual problems which don't tackle the fundamental causes. We must get back to basics without delay.
