The satisfactory testing and characterisation of mineralisation amenable to heap leaching, is of prime importance to successful operation of a project. This paper outlines a methodology for assessing material suitability. A general model is used for classing material types for suitability for treatment and for economic analysis. The four levels of these are overburden, oxide, transitional and unoxidised materials. During exploration, reverse circulation (RC) drilling can be used effectively to define these zones by a combination of logging, analysis and provision of cuttings for column leach and bottle roll trials. RC cuttings can he used effectively for column leach trials, when calibrated against conventional processing-sized samples, obtained from surface. Tbis allows metallurgical testing to depth and definition of transitional ore types and the base of oxidation, accurately and economically with an acceptable density of samples. The accurate prediction of base of oxidation and variations in recovery with depth and ore types can be used to develop 'economic' pit designs with zones of variable recovery. Petrological studies of leaching results and examination of mineralisation types carried out on concentrates, provide information on gold distribution and physical and chemical constraints. The examination of concentrates can be particularly useful for types of mineralisation when overall gold content is frequently at or below one pan per million. Explanation of anomalous recovery of gold grains in dense goethite and solution-robbing by carbonaceous material can be identified by use of petrological and scanning electron microscope. An understanding of the role of the host rock in leaching characteristics can also he provided by petrology where siliceous or clayey materials can require significantly different treatment.

The Beruang Copper-Gold Deposit is located very near the centre of Kalimantan in Indonesia. It is a dacitic tuff hosted deposit currently being explored by Kalimantan Gold Inc of Canada. Exploration activity to date at Beruang has been focused on the Main Zone, which is defined by a north-south elongate, 1 + 1.5 km zone of anomalous copper and gold, and intense phyllic alteration. The disseminated sulfides responsible for the anomalous copper values produce a moderate to high chargeability signature. Phyllic alteration is overlain at high levels, and on the western edge of the Main Zone, by advanced argillic alteration. The dacite tuffs hosting the mineralisation are cut by post-mineralisation dacite dykes that are delineated by ground magnetics and geological mapping. Base metals, principally zinc and lead, form broad halos around the Main Zone. These metals are incorporated in massive NE-trending, polymetallic mineralisation that outcrops to the north and south of the Main Zone. IP survey results highlight the highly pyritic NNE-trending shear zone, which hosts most of the copper mineralisation in the Main Zone. A high chargeability anomaly at depth in the central-east part of the Main Zone is interpreted to be the source for mineralising hydrothermal fluids. This is suggested by zonations in alteration and mineralisation. A deep chargeability anomaly can be correlated with the downward plunge of a pyritic breccia, encountered at shallow levels in drillholes, and is a potential breccia pipe target. Compilation and inversion modelling of the IP results has yielded some interesting drill targets.

The possibility of removing the phos phorus and sulphur contained in steelmaking slag has been studied by observing directly through the microscope melts heated on Pt- filaments. After a CaO crystal was placed in the molten slag, distributions of P, S and other elements formed around the CaO crystal were determined with the aid of EPMA. The results indicated that a layer of 2CaO SiO2 is formed on solid CaO in CaO-Si02 melts. Then between CaO and the newly formed compound the molten slag tends to migrate through cracks. For higher Fe 2 03 contents, the layers of the compounds 2CaO.Si02 and 3CaO SiO2 formed around the CaO crystal are not continuous but look more like particles, which promotes the dissolution of CaO. Phosphorus in slag was found to be enriched in the 2CaOòSi02 layer. Phosphorus in the 2CaO SiO2 phase is not related to the primary slag composition, being about 5-7% P205.. Sulphur in slag,as well as the phos- phorus,was concentrated in the 2CaO.Si02 phase. Disintegration due to weathering observed for slags produced in these investigations appeared to be due principally to hydration of lime.

Mond gas-producer tar, and, in fact, all tars obtained from the retorting of coal where steam and air are admitted to the retort, are of entirely different chemical composition to the ordinary coal tar made in the gas or coke works. These tars contain none of, the aromatic hydrocarbons - benzene, toluene, naphthalene, and anthracene, sought after by the ordinary coal-tar refiner.The distillation of Mond tar shows it to consist of phenols of high molecular weight, unsaturated hydrocarbons of high gravity and low viscosity, paraffin wax, and resinous substances of whose composition little is known.The physical properties of Mond producer tar are also peculiar. It has a "short," granular texture when cold, which might be likened to candied honey. It "dries" (hardens) when exposed in thin layers to the air, and, for a coal tar, it cannot be considered sticky. This latterò property, combined with the short texture, prevents its being used successfully for road-making or macadamizing.The drying properties and the paraffin wax contained in: this tar cause it to hold up large percentages of water, probably in the form of emulsion. When containing as much as 10% to 15% moisture it appears to be quite dry.

The Sto Tomas II orebody of Philex Mining Corporation is a porphyry copper deposit located at Padcal, Tuba, Benguet, Philippines. It was mined through open pit method for the first two years starting 1958 and subsequently through underground method using the Block Cave System. The slusher type of draw was employed at the upper levels of the orebody from mid-year of 1959 up to 1994 and then shifted to LHD as the ore became more competent at the lower levels. Application of rock mechanics played a vital role during the conceptualisation of the LHD method of draw, the first of its kind in the Philippines. Rock mechanics is a combined responsibility of the geology and the mine engineering staffs, with the geology providing the vital information to the mine engineering to include in the mine planning the following:the general geology of the orebody; the ground characterisation through rockmass classification; determination of the cavability of the ore column (this includes our experience on airblasts which occurred during the early stage of our last slusher blocks); undercutting sequence; fragmentation of the rockmass in the ore column; drawzone spacing; proper draw control procedure; lay-out of openings; and the design of ground supports based on the rockmass condition. For the proper interpretation of the rockmass that would cater to the diverse mining situations, Philex adopted the modified geomechanics rockmass classification (Mining Rockmass Rating, MRMR) as this system is recognised and used by most of the block cave mine worldwide. This paper aims to discuss and present the role of rock mechanics in the analysis and determination of geomechanical issues encountered in Philex mechanised block cave operation.

It is recognised by the current JORC (1999) code that resource classification involves the interaction of numerous qualitative and quantitative criteria such as data quality, geological continuity and grade continuity. No prescribed criteria and rules will work for all situations or even between different ore types within the same deposit. Also these criteria and rules are sometimes applied without a clear understanding of their appropriateness, accuracy or correct implementation. For these reasons case studies are useful to evaluate and compare criteria commonly used to assist in resource classification. In this paper blasthole data from a selected area of Joffre Member hosted ore of the Brockman Iron Formation at the Mt Whaleback orebody are used as the basis of a case study for the above-mentioned purposes. Iron grade, in per cent, is interpolated from a blasthole dataset into a block model using ordinary kriging. Samples are then removed from this blasthole dataset to produce a random sample grid, a semi-random sample grid and a regular sample grid. Using nearest neighbour, inverse distance squared, ordinary kriging and sequential gaussian simulation, block iron grades are estimated using these three blasthole data subsets as inputs. This provides four groups of estimates with the ordinary kriging estimate based on the complete blasthole dataset being considered to represent the true estimate of iron grades. Also generated during this process are estimates of the error for each block. These error estimates range from the simple, such as drill spacing, through to more advanced methodologies such as kriging efficiency and simulation. These estimates of grade and grade estimation error are then compared to the true estimate using graphs and statistics. In order of increasing accuracy the block grade estimation and simulation methods were nearest neighbour, inverse distance weighting, ordinary kriging and finally conditional simulation. The simulation in some instances doubled the accuracy of individual block grade estimates when compared to nearest neighbour and inverse distance weighting estimates. It was found that many methodologies for estimating the error of individual blocks performed equally well with only methods such as average drill hole spacing and classification by search ellipse pass number performing poorly. An approach on how to convert the abovementioned error estimates of individual blocks into a meaningful JORC classification is also discussed. Although advanced non-linear resource estimates are applicable, most iron ore mines are still using relatively straightforward methods. The use of blasthole data and some simple linear interpolation methods and simple linear based error estimates makes this study repeatable for most iron ore sites and their resource geologists. This style of investigation is recommended as a useful approach for the Competent Person to apply to their deposit and thus better select, implement and understand the criteria used for resource classification and provide more consistency and confidence in the resource classification process.

Shear-flocculation is one of a munber of potential processes for upgrading deposits of finely-grained minerals and, more generally, for separating different types of particles suspended in a fluid.The smaller the particle the more likely it is to follow the fluid streamlines, or be entrained within turbulent eddies, and the less likely it is to deviate from the streamline and attach to bubbles (froth flotation), other particles (selective flocculation) or magnetic poles (wet magnetic separation). As shown in Figure I, a number of ingenious ideas have been proposed to overcome this effect. The suspended particles are assumed to be 1 - 10 µm.Thus, the efficiency of attaching ultrafme particles of the valuable component (solid circles) to air bubbles, as in process A, is poor. The efficiency may be improved by attaching the particles to oil droplets (Ralston, Kart and Newcombe, 1984) to form agglomerates that rise or sink (B), to magnetic particles (C) (Parsonage, 1988) to allow recovery in a magnetic separator (D), to other particles to form aggregates (E) that are then either attached to bubbles (F) or recovered by sedimentation (G) (Warren, 1992), and to pieces of polyethylene (Rubio and Baltar, 1991) that rise or sink (H).In A, C, E, F and H, the forces that are generally used to ensure collisions result in adhesion are hydrophobic forces, hydrodynamic forces and inertial forces (Warren, 1992). These drag particles from the streamlines to allow particle-particle adhesion. In B and E, soluble polymeric molecules have been added to bridge between particles as they approach closely during a collision.The second major consideration is selectivity. Selective adsorption of the hydrophobe or polymer onto the valuable particles is the key. Many subtle effects of surface chemistry are involved in obtaining adequate selectivity. A complication in real systems is that the initial suspension is often naturally coagulated and needs to be dispersed before being selectively flocculated.

The Quesnell-Stikine arcs, in the Canadian Cordillera, are host to Triassic and Early Jurassic alkalic porphyry Cu-Au and calc-alkalic porphyry Cu-(Mo-Au) deposits formed outboard of ancestralNorth America in island-arc tectonic settings (McMillan, 1991). The majority of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au deposits are products of a discrete magmatic event at the end of the Triassic, with a second and smaller event in the Early Jurassic (Mortensen, Ghosh and Ferri, 1995). Of the Triassic complexes, the Galore Creek alkalic intrusive suite is one of the largest and most silica-undersaturated intrusive complexes, and host to the most significant undeveloped alkalic porphyry Cu-Au resource in North America (Lang, Stanley and Thompson, 1995). Because of the common presence of feldspathoidal-bearing rocks in the complex (Enns et al, 1995), Galore Creek likely represents an end member example of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au class. The Galore Creek alkalic Cu-Au-Ag porphyry district, located in NW British Columbia (Canada), contains 12 mineralised prospects (Enns et al, 1995; Micko et al, 2007; Schwab et al, in press) with a total measured and indicated resources of 785.7 Mt at 0.52 per cent Cu, 0.29 g/t Au and 4.87 g/t Ag (NovaGold Resources Inc, February, 2008). The Central Zone is the largest and best delineated. Other economically important mineralised centres include the South-West, Bountiful, West Fork and Junction deposits. The South-West Zone, the focus of this contribution, is a Cu-Au-Ag breccia-centred deposit with a measured and indicated resource of 69 Mt grading 0.42 per cent Cu, 0.69 g/t Au, 2.67 g/t Ag. Hosted in brecciated intrusive rocks, the South-West Zone is distinctly younger than the Central Zone and most of the other mineralised centres (Enns et al, 1995; Schwab et al, in press). The South-West Zone therefore preserves the late stages of hydrothermal evolution at Galore Creek. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Tailings management is typically constrained by many factors that are taken as given. These include the tailings production rate that must be accommodated, the desire to deliver the tailings cheaply and easily as a slurry using centrifugal pumps, and a tailings footprint limited by the desire to minimise capital costs leading to a rapid tailings rate of rise and a low settled density. Other constraints include wall raises being delayed due to limited capital, inadequate tailings water and rainfall run-off management, and the net present value (NPV) approach to capital expenditure that puts off expenditure at the expense of performance. All of these constraints result in the tailings occupying much more volume than is necessary, being difficult to rehabilitate, and not being capable of supporting a beneficial post-mining land use or function. Ultimately, such constrained tailings storage facilities will assume very large dimensions, but each will typically be developed as a series of smaller storages that are filled rapidly and added to progressively. The optimal stage to efficiently recover process water is in the process plant, but this is limited by the desire to use centrifugal pumps rather than the more costly positive displacement pumps, which also require greater management of tailings deposition. Process water can also be recovered from the tailings storage facility (TSF) decant. Tailings water that is not recovered from the plant or the decant will be lost to entrainment within the tailings, seepage to the foundation or through the wall, or evaporation. However, tailings water is not always suitable for reuse in the plant, particularly when it becomes contaminated by the processing, and it may simply be stored on the TSF. This will exacerbate the seepage of contaminated water to the environment, and will limit the densification of the tailings that would otherwise occur due to desiccation of the tailings on exposure. If a larger tailings footprint were developed early, cycling of tailings deposition in thin lifts between a number of cells could occur, maintaining the dormant cells dry to enhance desiccation and densification, and ultimate rehabilitation. The end result would be a much reduced stored volume of tailings, the potential for upstream raising, and ease of rehabilitation to a high level. The higher initial capital cost would be overtaken by reduced ongoing capital, operating and closure costs.CITATION:Williams, D J, ?2014. In mining operations, the removal of overburden to expose the ores is achieved by rock blasting using ammonium nitrate based explosives, eg ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures, commonly known as ANFO. However, ammonium nitrate can react with pyritic shales that are often found in many mines, leading to premature detonation or spontaneous explosion. In order to minimise the occurrence of spontaneous explosion, the reactivity of the shale in a mine must be assessed. This will provide a better understanding of blasting risks and thus will improve the safety and the cost efficiency of blasting through the selection of appropriate explosives. In this study, shale samples were collected from different locations in Western AustraliaÆs Mt Whaleback iron ore mine and geochemically characterised. The reactivity of the shale samples towards ammonium nitrate and ANFO was investigated using a combination of large-scale firing range tests and laboratory isothermal reactor tests. Results of the firing range tests show that the reactive ingredients of the shale are the limiting factor for the reactions between shale and ANFO. Based on the firing range test results, further isothermal reactor tests were conducted to investigate the reactivity of shale samples towards ammonium nitrate under controlled conditions. Analysis of the results from the firing range tests and the isothermal reactor tests shows that there are correlations between the reactivity of shale samples and several geochemical characteristics such as sulfate, sulfur, ferrous and zinc content.

The Pasminco Century Mine (PCML) is located 250 kilometres north-north-west of Mt Isa in Queensland. As one of the worldÆs largest zinc mines, PCML comprises mining and milling operations at Lawn Hill, concentrate filtering and shipping facilities at Karumba in the Gulf of Carpentaria, and a 304 km slurry pipeline connecting the two operations.Mineralisation at Century occurs in the upper part of the Lawn Hill formation and is comprised of siltstones, shale and sandstone. Pyrite occurs immediately above the mineralised sequence, and throughout the footwall carbonaceous shale forming the lower proportion of the deposit. Zinc predominantly occurs as sphalerite (ZnS) and lead as galena (PbS). These sulfides are very fine-grained and may oxidise rapidly upon exposure. The pyrite, sphalerite and galena are the main potential sources of acid rock drainage (ARD) or heavy metal leachate at the mine site.To minimise the generation of ARD in the waste rock dumps, they are constructed in a specific manner and waste rock is classified into the following three classes based on competence and acid forming/consuming capabilities:Class 1: Competent rock, non-acid forming or acid-consuming material. Class 2: Non-competent, non-acid forming or acid-consuming material. Class 3: Acid-forming material. The generalised Waste Rock Dump Design for current operations comprises an outer zone of Class 1 material and inner zone with Class 2 and 3 material. Limestone is the Class 1 material used for both its structural support and acid neutralising capacity. Reserves of limestone at the mine site are limited. Net acid generation (NAG) tests confirm that a mix of limestone and shales can be net acid consuming.Field based and laboratory based trials have been established at PCML to quantify blending levels of limestone and shale that will produce leachates both neutral in pH and low in metal/salt concentrations. This paper will discuss the first six months results (of a two-year sampling program) from the trials.

ABSTRACT- I Chemotrophic bacteria, capable of oxidising inorganic species such as Fe(II) and S(-]I) for their metabolic energy, have been known for many decades and interest in these bacterial species has increased since their ability oxidise auriferous arsenopyrite ores has been demonstrated. The rate at which bacterial cultures can oxidise a solid sulphide ore is of importance but a number of difficulties arise when attempting to evaluate this oxidative activity. The two major problems are counting the number of viable bacteria present in the reactor and identifying the types of bacteria that are active in both the solid and liquid phases. Enumerating the numbers of bacteria responsible for an observed change is necessary to compare the activity of different isolates. For selection and identification of bacteria during the development stages of a project, and for monitoring an operational process, the recognition of different species will be of importance. Methods for the taxonomic discrimination of bacterial species rely on observations, different culturing techniques, and the degree of DNA base homology between isolates. A method reported recently uses IR spectroscopy for comparisons between isolates. This spectroscopic method and its application is discussed.

In large companies with mining operations spread over multiple sites, it is essential that consistency between sites is maintained in preparing and classifying resource and reserve estimates. The endorsement by The AusLMM and AMIC of the "Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves" and the subsequent incorporation of reference to the code into the ASX listing rules for mining companies has provided a basis for the consistent classification of resources and reserves. However, compliance with other criteria more or less stringent than the Australasian Code can present some reporting difficulties. Examples include listing requirements for foreign stock exchanges, particular Acts of Parliament that may apply to individual leases, constraints imposed by individual companies on their own leases, and ultimately, reserves for short, medium and long term planning. Confusion can arise when any two or more sets of reserves for the same lease are compared.. To alleviate this confusion, a standardised procedure was developed for the calculation and classification of coal resources and reserves. The procedure which is geostatistically based incorporates a technique called "Irregular Block Kriging" where specific mining blocks are directly kriged. The procedure has enabled those engineers and geologists with only a basic understanding of geostatistics to apply the technique and not feel hampered by some of the complex mathematics which in the past has tended to inhibit and overcomplicate the use of geostatistics. The procedure has resulted in "cleaner" data bases and hence more reliable reserve estimates.

The self-organising map (SOM) is an exploratory data mining technique that is both non-traditional and underutilised. Methodologies based on SOM tend to be data-driven and unsupervised, which makes them ideal to assist in the integrated analysis and interpretation of complex and disparate æmineral explorationÆ data sets. While traditional statistical multivariate approaches have difficulty with relationships that are non-linear and data distributions that are not normal, SOM-based data mining procedures are useful in these circumstances. In a SOM analysis each sample is treated as a vector in a data space defined by the variables; and measures of vector similarity, such as the dot-product or Euclidean distance, are used to order or segment a data set into naturally occurring populations. These groupings are positioned as nodes, or groups of nodes, on a 2D rectilinear representation of the multi-dimensional ædata spaceÆ, which is the æself organized mapÆ. While it is common not to include a sampleÆs locational information in the actual SOM analysis, such information can be used to display the spatial location of samples coded by their SOM node or cluster. If one finds there are coherent spatial patterns belonging to samples from particular nodes, or groups of nodes, then there is strong evidence that the technique is determining patterns and relationships within the data that have natural significance. Variations of the SOM technique may be used to perform broad categories of operations, including: 1. outlier identification û for samples belonging to various nodes or grouping of nodes; 2. function fitting, prediction, estimation or imputation û for calibrating relationships between variables and determining replacement values for missing, null or censored values; 3. clustering, pattern recognition or noise reduction û for determining the natural patterns within a data set; and 4. classification û for classifying samples into the clusters determined in three. In the lower zone of blast furnace (BF), slag trickles down through a packed bed of carbonaceous particles in the form of films, rivulets or droplets. During its downward flow, there are significant interactions occurring between slag and other phases, ie gas and packing particles. In particular, the interaction between gas and slag is closely associated with the key flow phenomena such as loading, flooding or channelling in the lower zone of the BF. With gas introduced laterally through tuyeres and slag flowing downward from the cohesive zone to the hearth, this interaction varies throughout the lower zone and in the cohesive zone:  strong cross-flow of gas relative to the slag occurs in front of the raceway  counter-current flow of gas and slag occurs in the upper parts of the lower zone  both strong cross- and counter-current flow of gas and slag around and within the cohesive zone. These interactions can be linked to furnace irregularities, affecting smooth operation and limiting production. Therefore, understanding the gas-slag interaction and its influencing factors remains critical for BF process control. In the current review, the physical behaviour and key influencing factors of gas and slag flow are initially examined. Numerical models describing gas and slag flows in a packed bed at micro-, mesoand macro-scopic levels, are reviewed. Each simulation approach has its advantages and limitations, as well as unique assumptions when used in BF process modelling. Applications of these approaches to gas-slag flow in key identified functional zones will highlight the differences between approaches and modelling outcomes. As no single approach can fully address all aspects of gasslag interactions, an integration of different approaches is considered an effective and beneficial method in providing a more complete understanding of gas-slag flow in the BF process.

Segmental tunnel linings are becoming more common in Australia. One current project employing a segmental lining is the City West Cable Tunnel (CWCT) in Sydney. The project has been commissioned by Energy Australia and is currently being constructed by Thiess Pty Ltd. The project includes 1.6 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven, segmentally lined tunnel. The majority of the CWCT will be excavated through Hawkesbury Sandstone. The tunnel is required to carry a 132 kV electrical circuit under SydneyÆs central business district (CBD), between Haymarket and Energy AustraliaÆs City North Substation on Sussex Street. The segmental lining has been designed as a 3.2 m internal diameter, 200 mm thick universal ring with six trapezoidal segments. The design and detailing of this segmental lining presents some noteworthy challenges, including exposure to saline groundwater, and the exclusive use of steel fibres for flexural and tensile concrete reinforcement. This paper describes some of the key elements of the segmental lining design. These include:the case for choosing segmental linings over other forms of tunnel construction;the major design checks required of a segmental lining including ground loading, hydrostatic loading, joint bearing, joint rotation, ram loading and the early strength lifting case;the benefits of using steel fibres over conventional steel reinforcement;the design approach used for steel fibre reinforced concrete;the application of 3D computer modelling in the design;the provision for components including connector dowels and gaskets;the design for passive fire resistance; andthe design for durability of steel fibre reinforced concrete in a saline environment. Segmental lining design requires the application of specialist design approaches. Input is required by the construction team, as the methods of demoulding, handling, transportation and installation impact on the lining design. As the segmental lining is functioning as immediate ground support and also a permanent lining, high standards of manufacture and construction quality control are required to ensure that the 100-year design life is met. The requirement for a watertight tunnel means that detailing and installation of the EPDM gaskets is of importance.

Current control practice is reviewed for agglomeration processes, including pelletising, sintering and induration; and for smelting processes, including blast and reverberatory furnaces, flash smelting, the intensive bath smelting processes together with converting. The importance of sensors for on-line control and the status of mathematical modelling is discussed.Future progress in automatic control will require improved component specific sensors and the use of validated mathematical models running in parallel with the process. The possibilities in both these areas are reviewed in light of the trends towards more intensive smelting processes.

Reservoir Engineering has developed into an art. One phase of this art is forecasting the futi. perf ormance of oil and gas reservoirs for property valuations. A discussion of the necessity for oil property valuation isgiven. A brief 'discussion of the four most common methods is included and the engineering method is explained in more detail. As an example of oil property valuations, a producing oil lease in Shackelford County, Texas, USA is evaluated.' The recommendations and conclusions arrived at frun the results obtained are presented.
