WMC Fertilizers (WMCF) operates a Beneficiation Plant at Phosphate Hill in Queensland, Australia. The plant consists of two-stages of crushing, followed by a wet scrubbing and desliming circuit. Ore is then fed to a tertiary crusher and a milling/classification circuit, with the final product going to a swing-lift thickener and storage tanks. From the slurry storage tanks, the phosphate rock is fed to a horizontal belt filters which dewater the phosphate rock ahead of a hemi-hydrate phosphoric acid plant. The water soluble recovery of phosphate in the phosphoric acid plant is dependent on the moisture content in the filter cake, as this governs the wash water addition to the hemi-hydrate filters. Since commencement of operation, the moisture content of the filter cake fed to the phosphoric acid plant has been higher than design reducing the phosphoric acid plant recovery and at times reducing the throughput through the phosphoric acid plant. The moisture content in the filter cake can be decreased by reducing the generation of fines in the milling and classification circuit (classified as û38 micron material). This paper identifies the causes of fines generation in the Phosphate Hill beneficiation plant. It discusses the options that were assessed to minimise fines generation, and outlines the results to date of circuit changes undertaken at Phosphate Hill.

With the extensive exploitation and gradual depletion of high-grade copper reserves, the mining industry is paying more and more attention to the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper from lowgrade and arsenic bearing copper ores. Hydrometallurgical processing, such as heap leaching, column leaching and bioleaching, provide a viable alternative to the traditional pyrometallurgy due to its harmony with the environment, moderate capital investment, and low operating costs. However, the slow leaching kinetics of enargite (Cu3AsS4) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) remain problematic for commercial leaching practice. The formation mechanism and the nature of the passivating layers during leaching is still a matter of debate in hydrometallurgical research. In this study, the dissolution mechanism of enargite and chalcopyrite in sulfuric acid solution was investigated using a range of electrochemical and spectroscopic analysis methods. Electrochemical oxidation of enargite demonstrated an obvious passivation region from 500 to 750 mV (Ag/AgCl). The formed passivation film was found a n-type semiconductor behaviour, which is different from the original enargite with a p-type behaviour. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested that a nonstoichiometric film Cu(3−x)As(1−y)S4 (x>>y) accumulated on the electrode surface, which accounted for the obvious decrease in current density in the passive potential region. For chalcopyrite, three important potentials of 550, 680 and 730 mV which are related to the formation and dissolution of passivation film were observed based on the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and potentiodynamic polarisation. Raman and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra studies of the chalcopyrite electrodes after being treated under these three potentials indicated a metal-deficient sulfide of Cu1−xFe1−yS2 (y>>x) might be responsible for the passivation phenomenon. Hence, it is concluded that the passivation of enargite and chalcopyrite are similar which are caused by metaldeficient sulfide surfaces although the compositions of the metal-deficient sulfide are different.

The mineral exploration and extraction industries have gained major cost and efficiency benefits from the use of computers. However these industries are now at a cross-roads with two seemingly disparate developments - that of an increasing number of complex geoscience databases and, at the same time, the merging of all known data for the particular regions at minimal cost. These two developments can be managed by the development and of an industry accepted geoscience data model and dictionary. This will provide a common basis of understanding for geoscience data through a common language and a common structure for geoscience information. Integration of specialist systems and databases can then proceed efficiently. The development of a data model is going ahead with consensus from the mining industry. This is a joint government and industry funded project and managed through the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association, AMIRA. AMIRA is a well known research broker to the Australian mining industry obtaining sponsorship for projects both from private and government groups. The AMIRA project, P431, called the Geoscience Data Model, is to be the Australian standard data model for geoscience disciplines. The requirement for a standard geoscience data model has been recognised in Australia for some time. In October 1991, the Australian Government Geoscience Database Policy Advisory Committee (GGDPAC) established a Geoscience Data Standards Working Group which drafted a comprehensive list of data categories of the geoscience area. An AMIRA project called AMDEX was established to develop a transfer standard for the mining industry data at about the same time as this committee was in operation. The first AMDEX sponsors meeting was held in May 1991. It was proposed to use the US Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) as the basis to transfer mining data in AMDEX. A limited data model of mining data to be transferred was developed for the AMDEX standard under SDTS. The Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) saw the need to extend this and develop a complete data model for the geosciences and proposed this as a new project to AMIRA. This was strongly supported by GGDPAC which lead to sponsorship of the project from most state geological surveys. The Geoscience Data Model can be broken down into separate data models for a number of geoscience themes and sponsorship obtained so far will enable models to be developed for a comprehensive set of themes selected by the project sponsors. Further sponsorship is required to enable a more complete coverage of the geoscience area to be developed. Sponsorship for the Geoscience Data Model has been strong from the geological surveys and there was some effort by GGDPAC to promote the project in these organisations. An Australian geoscience data model is of immediate use to the geological surveys in assisting the standardising of huge quantities of geoscience data held by government agencies and it is preferable that this be an Australia-wide standard.

The recent modernisation program at the Risdon electrolytic zinc smelter of Pasminco Metals - EZ (PMEZ) inyolved significant changes to the composition of cell electrolytes. The most significant were increased acidity and sulphate level, a reduction in Co level, and the replacement of 2-naphthol in the additive mixture with licorice. In determining acceptable operating ranges, a relatively large number of industrial deposition tests under controlled conditions was required. The cathode zinc deposits so produced were examined in terms of overall appearance, crystal structure according to X-ray diffraction, and a micro-roughness parameter. Beginning with typical deposits produced in the presence of an excess of one of the addition agents glue or antimony or a mist suppressant (licorice or 2-naphthol), a simple classification system was developed. In this system, the deposits are divided into the following types: Doughy, Pinholed, Compact and Stressed. There was a weak correlation between deposit type and crystal orientation. In terms of ease of stripping, observations in plant operations showed that only Compact and Pinholed were consistently acceptable. Current efficiency was normally maximised by producing a Compact deposit. Process variables such as zinc concentration, temperature and the use of strontium carbonate were found to cause changes in deposit type if the reagent mixture used was unchanged. From the knowledge gained, guidelines were developed to allow glue and antimony additions to be altered to fit new circumstances. The simple classification system was first used to expedite recovery from undesirable morphologies and then to optimise individual cell units operated under substantially different conditions. It is believed that finer control could be exercised by determining the micro-roughness of Compact deposits. However, difficulties can arise if sudden, large deviations occur and go undetected. Suggestions are given for an improved additive control system. The classification system developed has been compared with published information in the literature, and good correspondence was noted suggesting a predictable relationship between short-term, laboratory deposition tests and observable phenomena in industrial electrowinning cells run under steady conditions.

A mathematical model for spontaneous combustion of coal with moisture included is presented in this paper. The one-dimensional unsteady state model consists of conservation equations for oxygen, water vapour and inherent moisture of coal and energy for both gaseous and solid phases. A first order Arrhenius reaction rate for oxidation under both pore diffusion and chemically controlled reaction regime is considered. The rate of evaporation or condensation is also considered as a function of temperature of coal, water content of coal and gas streams. The equation of the model is solved numerically by the finite difference technique. Influences of different parameters on the process of spontaneous combustion can be examined by using this model. Also the model can be used to simulate full-scale storage conditions.

Operational grinding mills emit significant acoustic emissions which are a consequence of the dynamic environment prevailing inside them. From a technical perspective, the noise presents an opportunity to determine some details of the processes occurring inside the mills. The noise generated is not random and can be attributed to a range of events that occur inside these mills, consequently non-contact acoustic determinations of in-mill behaviour provide powerful insights into the operation of primary comminution tumbling mills. To enable a logically coherent picture to be formed of the processes inside a mill, arrays of microphones have been used. This approach allows a clearer picture of the in-mill behaviour of the charge to be accessed. In contrast to single microphone approaches, usually located near the expected charge toe position, an array of microphones allows much more useful information to be obtained from grinding mill noise.This paper will discuss and present data obtained from microphone arrays positioned at the toe and shoulder locations of a mill, and how this information can then be used for the optimisation of grinding mills in real-time.CITATION:Pax, R A, 2012. Coal is a vital energy source and source of carbon for metallurgical applications, contributing significantly to the world economy. Coal mining and processing involve multiple processes that generate Respirable Coal Mine Dust (RCMD), one of the primary sources of health hazards for coal workers. Since 2000, the rate of Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP) has continually increased in the U.S, with severity of the cases also worsening. Increasing evidence shows that exposure to RCMD in coal workers is a high-risk factor for lung cancer, which causes more deaths than the following three major cancers combined in the US Recent observations show an increased incidenceof CWP or other lung diseases, particularly among young miners in the Appalachian basin. The CWP prevalence in Appalachia is four times higher than the national average. Although various regulations are in place, the resurgence of such disease among coalminers demands additional efforts to better understand all the possible facets of coal dust toxicity, taking insights from current interdisciplinaryresearch efforts. One such important field is the interaction of coal dust with moisture in underground mines. Although moisture is prevalent and dynamic in an underground mining environment, it has never been evaluated for its impact on modifying the toxicity of coal dust and transport or flow behaviour. However, research conducted in atmospheric sciences in the past decade makes it clear that moisture in the atmosphere can significantly alter the behaviour of mineral dust. This paper is a part of research aimed at understanding how moisture interacts and alters the characteristics of coal dust. Such insight is crucial in understanding the potential toxicity of coal dust and developing mitigation technologies.

The Joint Committee of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) and the Australian Mining Industry Council (AMIC) have published a Code for the Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves. The Code is the result of an initiative begunin 1971 to achieve industry self regulation of Resources and Ore Reserves reporting which resulted first in guidelines for reporting standards but which have now been incorporated in ASX Listing Rules as a Code withsignificant sanctions ensuring compliance. This paper describes the background to the Code, its key provisions, and comments on practical aspects of1 working with the Code and compliance issues.

Particles are by far the easiest objects to simulate, because their dynamics is simple. Determining the motion of particles and their interaction, a wide variety of deformable structures can be constructed by connecting particles that have mass, position, and velocity, and that respond to forces. Starting from this simple idea we have derived what we call the particle-lattice method for the solutions of boundary value problems of deformation and fracture of solid mass. The problem of rock breaking by blasting operations as well as fracture and flow of rocks fragments involve momentum transfer between solid and fluid; gas flow and reactive mass transfer. In this paper we outline the method and describe briefly the salient features of the algorithm. We derive relationships between the contact properties for the discrete model and the properties of the underlying continuum and fluid flow coupling procedure. Finally we illustrate the potential of the method by means of example solutions related to the dynamic fracture and flow in jointed rock by blasting.

A volcanic sequence is described from the Golden Cross Mine, Waihi, New Zealand. The sequence includes seven lithostratigraphic units comprising flow and pyroclastic units of Coromandel Group andesite and dacite and overlying Whitianga Group dacite and rhyolite which is intruded by the Golden Cross dacite porphyry and rhyolite dykes. The sequence is mineralized and is unconformably overlain bv_ two post-mineral units, the lacustnne Waitekauri beds and Omahine Subgroup andesite. Detailed structural analysis of mine data has identified four deformational events (D 1-D4) and related these to the gold-silver mineralizing events. Faulting was coeval with the mineralization and directly controlled the development, localization, style and geometry of the ore shoots. Mineralization developed in competent lithologies where dilation occurred during faulting. The Empire Fault is the master shear which controlled fluid flow. Mineralized veining developed in response to tectonic pulses occurring at slightly different stages as represented by the underground Empire vein complex and the open pit vein array. The mineralizing events culminated with the deposition of barren calcite veins. Post-mineral movement along the Western Boundary fault appears to have offset the ore body.

Techniques for the optimisation of open pit design and development are now accepted as standard practice in the mining industry. These techniques are used to analyse the impacts on project profitability of factors such as product price, slope design criteria and equipment selection. A fundamental assumption used in this type of analysis is that dump and stockpile designs and sequencing are predetermined. The cost of haulage for a typical truck shovel mining operation is in the range of 25 - 50 per cent of mine operating costs. Substantial cost savings can be achieved by optimisation of dump design and location of associated road and ramp systems.Factors which affect both the operation and total cost of dumping include; Ramp gradients and location, road design, dump placement and shape, dumping height, slope design (interim and final), slope stability, environmental requirements and equipment selection. This paper discusses these factors and their effects on the total mining operation and project value. Reference is made to case studies in which some of these factors have had a significant impact.

Newmont AustraliaÆs Callie Underground Gold Mine is located on the Dead Bullock Soak Mining Lease, approximately 600 km NW of Alice Springs, NT, in the Granites-Tanami Goldfield. Dead Bullock Soak is part of NewmontÆs Tanami Operations, which also include the Granites Gold Mine and processing plant, Groundrush Open Pit and Tanami Mill. Callie is a world class Proterozoic gold deposit; production to date is in excess of 1.7 million ounces, with an additional Proved and Probable reserves at the end of 2002 of 10.8 Mt at 6.3 g/t. Gold mineralisation at Callie occurs in thin (1 - 30 mm) steeply dipping quartz-chlorite sheeted vein system that cuts across a 40¦ plunging folded sequence of medium to fine-grained metasediments. While the vein system is highly continuous, the gold distribution is highly variable and is controlled by the interaction of lithology, alteration, structure and vein density. The mineralisation is commonly coarse-grained and has a relatively high nugget effect, consequently the orebody is problematic to estimate and shows a high degree of sensitivity to drill hole density. Resource modelling at Callie is an example of a geologically driven model that has evolved with increasing data and understanding. Lithological and structural models are employed to define domains within which the grade estimation is undertaken using multiple indicator kriging. This gradual model evolution impacted greatly on the selection of the mining method. Uncertainty in the estimation of the orebody was a significant factor that led to sublevel open stoping with cemented aggregate fill being adopted as the mining method to improve extraction selectivity. Callie often shows strong positive reconciliation compared to the mill. The mine geologistÆs face the challenge of limiting the degree of underestimation of the core of stopes whilst ensuring that stope boundaries are not conservative. This can only be achieved through the mapping of subtle geological features in order to confirm the orebody model. The increased use of the geological mapping has improved our understanding of the controls on mineralisation and has been extended into the development of new models for near mine underground exploration.

The stratigraphy of the Singleton Coal Measures is reviewed and a revised stratigrapixy which has been ratified by the N.S.W. Standing Committee for Coalfield geology is nominated and defined by a selected type section. Withir the type section the occurrence of repetitive phases are illustrated and described. Coal. Measure units within the Singleton Coal Mean sures, termed the Wollombi and Wittingham Coal Measures respectively, are correlated with the Newcastle and Tomago Coal Measures. In formal nomenclature the Singleton Coal Measures are designated the Singleton Super Group. The major depositional cycles within the Coal Mea- sures are outlined together with those lesser phases within the Coal bearing sequences that influence the mining conditions likely to be encountered. Both tectonic and sedimentary features of the Singleton Coal Measures are considered and the localized post depositional effects on the coal seams and roof strata in- duced by differential, compactions are emphar Sized.

Stawell Gold Mines Pty Ltd operates two underground decline mines within the township of Stawell. An active exploration program and commitment by owners to improving the ore reserves has led to an improved mine life and reduced operating costs since the purchase of the operation by Mining Project Investors and Pittston Mineral Ventures in late-1992. Over the past six years of operation a cumulative 1 150 000 ounces of gold have been added to the mineral inventory. An improved geological understanding of the orebody has evolved over time increasing the ore reserves and allowing the development of long-term plans for the mines future. This has enabled important capital decisions to be made providing the impetus for improved productivity and thereby reduced operating costs. Co-operative mine planning and mine geology utilising best practice geological systems have enabled the effective extraction of a structurally complex and mineralogically varied deposit within a rural Victorian township. Detailed metallurgical research has improved the function of an aged and poorly designed circuit to boost the mill capacity whilst also improving the metallurgical recovery. The combination of metallurgical expertise and an understanding of the geological setting enable an effective control of metallurgical recovery.

Direct smelting of copper in a single vessel has long been the extractive metallurgist's dream. Such a process offers the important alvantage. of (i) maximum use of the energy available from oxidizing the sulphur and iron of the concentrate: (ii) restriction of SO2 emissions to a single constant-strength source; (iii) minimum materials handling and (iv) elim-ination of at least one process step. Extensive developmental work was carried out in the 1960's and 1970's to implement such single-step processes. Some of the processes reached the prototype stage and it appeared that copper smelting technology was on the thresthold of a new, efficient, minimum-pollution era. Since that time, however, the forward thrust has slowed and single-step copper smelting is still a process of the future.The paper describes the potential advan-tages of single-step smelting; its history and current status; and the reasons why it has not been adopted industrially. It concludes that the potential benefits of single-step smelting are powerful and that many of the difficulties encountered in the 1970's will be overcome in the 1980's.

The comminution process indicates that the most energy-efficient comminution system would be one where the particles leave the breakage field as soon as they reach product size. Contrary to the free falling gravitational (vertical) flow in crushers, the grinding millÆs energy efficiency essentially depends on ore characteristics and the discharge rate of broken particles, which in turn depends on how efficiently the discharge pump (grate and pulp lifters) operates. The essential function of a pulp lifter is to transport the broken material and slurry from the discharge grate out of the mill. Hence, the design optimisation of pulp lifters affects not only the energy efficiency and throughput of autogenous grinding/semi-autogenous (AG/SAG) grinding mills, but also contributes other process benefits such as improved wear life and operator-friendly steady and smooth mill operation. Following its introduction in 2006, OutotecÆs patented Turbo Pulp Lifter (TPLÖ) design has been retrofitted at existing sites and also installed in some new ones around the world. This paper will provide operational experience and data on how the TPLÖ design has allowed AG and SAG mills to operate efficiently.

The effect of delay time on fragmentation has been discussed for a long period but rarely in a satisfactory and unbiased way. Despite the efforts of many researchers, delay selection for fragmentation improvement or optimisation remains a controversial issue. Large-scale tests have been plagued with scarcity and scatter of observations, while small-scale tests have been associated with boundary effects and energy losses. Theoretical work is often used to produce explanations for available measurements or tries to simplify wave propagation and wave interaction to guide observation and practical work. The present work analyses results obtained from a relatively large number of small-scale experiments in blocks made of grout, and re-analyses results of previous experiments, to conclude on the effect of delay on fragmentation. It is shown that the main contribution of the delay is found in the fragmentation of the larger fragments of the blast, while the small fractions show almost no effect. Samples, where copper liners were used to inhibit penetration of detonation products in the rock mass, showed effect of delay only when short times were used and steady but poor fragmentation when long delays were used. Based on small-scale experiments, it appears that the fragmentation is optimised when a hole fires prior to the radial cracks, produced by the previous hole, reach the free face of the blast. Gas penetration may result in the development of few more fractures that affect the fragmentation of the largest particles of the blast.CITATION:Katsabanis, P D and Omidi, O, 2015. The Ida Valley in Central Otago is one of series of parallel basins filled with freshwater sediments. The basins are in fact tectonic depressions superimposed on NE trending grabenlike structures which occur in the area and are the result of block faulting possibly initiated in Cretaceous times and concluded in late Tertiary and early Quaternary. In Central Otago this tectonic event affected metamorphosed rocks belonging to the eastern facies of the New Zealand Geosyncline and collectively known as the Haast Schist Group. These rocks constitute the basement and the shoulders of the tectonic depressions. The Ida Valley occupies the depression wedged in between the Raggedy Range to the NW and the North Rough Ridge in the SE. The valley is approximately 38 km long, 3 to 7.5 km wide and is drained by the NE flowing Pool Burn, which meets the SW flowing Ida Burn. The resulting unified stream flows into the Manuherikia river which drains the next door depression to the NW. The present work deals with the Ida Valley basin and more specifically with the geology studied within two Prospecting Licence areas held by Gold Mines of NZ Ltd on the southeastern flank of the valley.

Natural gas from the south west Queensland gas fields is now available in north west Queensland to fuel the development of many Carpentaria Mineral Province projects. Like these projects, the south west Queensland gas project, developed under the operatorship of Santos Ltd, has its own æMining CycleÆ. While the project is entering its third expansion phase, it is at the same time actively extending its discovery phase, with large programs of gas exploration and reserves definition. This paper outlines the history of the south west Queensland gas project, with particular emphasis on the relationship of the project to north west Queensland.

The installation of truck turntables at above-ground crushers has the potential to yield gains in efficiency and productivity by eliminating the need for the trucks to turn around and reverse up to the crusher to dump their loads. The benefits include savings in time, fuel consumption and tyre wear. In addition, having a smaller area near the crushers dedicated to manoeuvring the trucks can be a significant benefit at some sites. Safety is also enhanced using turntables.This paper describes a project with the Australian Turntable Company to develop software that generates near-optimal layouts for the paths taken by the trucks in the vicinity of the crushers when turntables are present or absent. The geometry of the paths is constrained by the turning radius of the trucks and by the boundary of the manoeuvring area. The software quantifies the benefit of installing turntables by generating a design for paths with turntables and comparing it with the layout in current or planned use by the mining company.
