Every diesel engine emits approximately 100 million nano diesel particles (nDP) per cubic centimetre of raw exhaust. Each nDP has a diameter of between 50 and 70 nano metres or 1/100th the size of red blood cells (diameter of between 6 and 8 microns). When inhaled, some nDP pass through the lungs and penetrate all body tissue [1]. Europe and North America have recognised and are addressing the long term health problems posed by nano diesel particulate matter (nDPM) across their societies [2.3]. Australia has been slow to recognise the issue, at both a societal and mining industry level. There are chronic health effects for every underground miner and serious legal issues for mining companies with increasingly stringent Occupational Health and Safety legislation being implemented at a state level across Australia. This paper will review progress within Australian society and more particularly the underground hard rock mining industry, particularly in Western Australia (WA).

The Clem Jones Tunnel (formally known as the North-South Bypass Tunnel), a A$2.88 billion road tunnel project in Brisbane, Queensland, was successfully completed almost seven months ahead of schedule. The project included two parallel 4.7 km long road tunnels, 740 m of intermediate roadway access ramps and two auxiliary ventilation tunnels. The tunnels incorporate intelligent tunnel systems, best practice fire and life safety standards and typical civil tunnel elements.Over the duration of the project the Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) and AECOM (formally Maunsell) design joint venture (MPB) were Lead Designers to the Leighton Contractors and Baulderstone Bilfinger Berger Joint Venture (LBBJV). Construction of the toll road commenced in September 2006 and was completed in March 2010, with the tunnel opening then. Contributing to the success of this project was the continued support the lead designers gave throughout the construction period.This paper will focus on some of the structural elements that contributed to the success of the project – in particular the cable tunnel structure, a small precast, culvert shaped element under the pavement of the mainline tunnel, and the fit-out of the Gibbon Street shaft which were designed to be constructed in a combination of precast and in situ concrete.The cable tunnel was incorporated early in the design phase and runs the length of much of the tunnel. This paper will outline the challenges faced by the designers with implementing this system which provided significant construction advantages, among which were being able to install a separate ventilation duct during construction and to start fitting out the mechanical and electrical conduits and drainage system while tunnelling was still underway.The Gibbon Street shaft had a length and width of 20 m by 40 m and an overall depth of 38 m. A 20 m high structure of precast and in situ concrete was constructed in the base to accommodate mechanical and electrical equipment and provide a take-off access for the southern ventilation tunnel. The construction purpose for this structure was to provide a junction between the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and the roadheader-style tunnels, a staging platform for commencing the roadheader tunnelling, and a platform where the TBMs could be dismantled and removed.The design was assessed and reviewed many times throughout the construction process to address the needs of each of these stages. Innovative use of precast concrete was used to minimise construction time.Additionally, the designers provided support to the construction team from the time of design completion through to the tunnel opening. This meant that the changes to the design and adjustment of construction loadings could also be assessed. The fi nal outcome resulted in an efficient construction sequence and a project that has provided an excellent outcome for the client, stakeholders and community.

The empirical McCracken and Stacey stability and risk assessment method has been in use for more than 20 years to assess geotechnical stability issues for raise bored shafts. The methodology has been applied with various levels of success. Increasingly, trends in mining and civil tunnelling have been towards larger diameter, single pass, raise bored shafts to rapidly provide means of ventilation, material movement (ore passes), or emergency egress. Identifying and assessing potentially problematic zones before raise boring commences can allow for appropriate risk-based decisions on construction, or to investigate alternative solutions. The implementation of a proactive solution to raising through an identified weak zone is preferred to the application of an engineered solution to an area subjected to substantial instability or failure. Methods for investigating potentially problematic areas are discussed in this paper based on AMC’s benchmarking data. Proactive investigation programmes resulting from these investigations are also discussed. Previous publications discussing the benchmarking data have concentrated on Australian case studies. Increased efforts and recent updates have been made to expand the database to include international case studies. This has provided further refinement of lower bound ‘raise bore rock quality index’ (QR) values, and various rock mass parameters for stability assessments. This paper describes the design and construction of three 7.2 m span access ramp-tunnels to the three level underground car park of the newly redeveloped Top Ryde City Shopping Centre in northern Sydney. The tunnels were to be excavated without significant impact on the overlying Devlin Street, one of the busiest arterial roads in the Sydney metropolitan area and a major link in the Sydney road network. The interpretation of the geological conditions indicated that the tunnels would be driven in a formation of heavily jointed, extremely weathered to fresh Triassic Ashfield shale with some structural features such as dyke, fault and shear zones identified in the available boreholes logs. Both empirical and numerical methods were used to design the tunnels and to predict the ground surface settlements. The design solution, which was influenced by the relatively small scale nature of the work and the current demands on the tunnel construction market, included presupport, initial support and permanent steel fibre reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) lining. The interactions of the driven portals with cut and cover sections and the proposed deep excavation of the new shopping centre were considered at the design development stage and in the construction phase to ensure the safety of the live road. The tunnels have been successfully constructed and are now operational.

The Kibali Gold Mine is currently comprised of several open pits, a 3.5 Mtpa underground mine and a 7.5 Mtpa processing plant. Development of the underground operation commenced in December 2012, with initial access established through twin surface declines, followed by the commencement of a blind sink 8 m diameter rock hoist shaft in March 2013. Stope production started in December 2014 with ore and waste trucked to surface. The 755 m deep blind shaft sink was completed in August 2015 together with the cutting and equipping of three main station levels. Two of these levels provide access for the establishment of the underground materials handling system as well as the main dewatering system for the mine. This paper covers the process of determining the optimal location of the Kibali hoisting shaft relative to project-specific critical factors, and then focuses on the design and implementation journey associated with the off-shaft development that essentially encompasses the Material Handling System (MHS) for the mine. The journey starts from the findings of the previous owners Feasibility Study (FS), a subsequent Optimised FS, followed by detailed engineering through to implementation. It was identified during implementation that a significant change in the designed off-shaft layout was required following detailed underground geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations. In addition, the paper provides details on the MHS performance since commissioning to steady state, and on key learnings relating to the overall project process.

Critical reviews of grade control generally focus on blasthole sampling and the estimation of ore control block model (OCM) grades, with little or no attention given to dig-line design. For example, the estimation of block grades is deemed important as estimation errors lead to the misclassification of ore types and subsequent dollar loss. Recognition of the problem that the underestimation of block grades may be more or less costly than overestimation led to the application of loss functions to the classification of individual OCM blocks by ore type. The method is known as maximum profit selection (MPS). However, each OCM block may be misclassified a second time by dig-line design. Although each block may initially be assigned an optimum ore type by MPS, OCM blocks are seldom individually mineable by ore type. As a result, a common solution to this problem is the design of mineable polygons or dig lines loosely constrained by a minimum mining width. All material within a properly designed dig-line polygon can be mined and sent to a single destination such as the mill, stockpile or waste dump. These dig lines are often designed manually or by simple variations of computer-generated contour lines. They are generally suboptimal and result in additional misclassifications of ore types. This paper provides an algorithm for constrained optimum dig-line design where dig-line misclassifications are also evaluated through loss functions or MPS. Constrained optimum dig-line designs minimise the dollars lost by dig line misclassifications for a given minimum mining width constraint. The automated measurement of rock fragmentation particle size distribution in the muck during muck excavation has been developing over the last 16 years. The introduction of stereo camera imaging of the muck has provided improved automated particle segmentation for image-based measurement algorithms. Recently, a new vision system processing algorithm has been developed. The inclusion of 2D texture in the analysis has provided a significant improvement in the definition of the finer size fractions, which has resulted in the automated analysis no longer requiring calibration.The previous stereo vision system algorithm required analysis calibration to account for poor ‘small particle’ definition in the 3D surface profile. This was because of the depth perception limitations of the stereo camera system at greater than 8 m. The new algorithm has been implemented on a number of shovel-installed vision systems, and the algorithm’s performance in automated analysis has been assessed against a diligent manual analysis of the same fragmentation images. The material properties and hence performance of saturated alluvial sediments slope can be incorrectly forecast if the water content is not preserved, and materials properties not correctly determined. The occurrence of saturated sediments in the Western Australia (WA) Goldfields, while not common, should be a significant investigation focus. Geotechnical engineers new to the area may be unaware of this and hence the importance of correct testing and determination of the material strength. Application of appropriate analysis to determine stable pit slopes to an acceptable level of risk, is not possible unless the appropriate strength and hydrogeological parameters have been established at the outset. A back analysis is presented of a pit that had extensive slope failures in alluvial clay-rich sediments with discussion on the approach adopted by the original design engineers to assess pit wall stability and consequent poor slope performance. Learnings from a full pit 3D back analysis are presented, with an approach to geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations and analysis for slopes in similar materials.

We are all no doubt aware that with today's high costs it is more important than ever to get the maximum possible return on capital invested in the mining industry. Screening is an important and often costly process in the size classification of industrial minerals and for this reason alone it is essential for both managers and operators to fully understand what type of screening equipment is best suited for a particular application and why. The advent of elastic materials such as rubber and polyurethane have added a new dimension to the process of screening. It is important to understand why the physical properties of these materials can be of benefit in the screening process, and recognise which type of screening applications best take advantage of these orooerties.

At present we are witnessing large investments in the iron ore industry, fuelled by demand from Asia. At the same time, there is a changing landscape in pricing of iron ores, with the recent demise of the benchmark system and the evolution of market based index pricing systems. From a customer perspective, it is the behaviour of iron ores in downstream processing that gives them their value; their impact on the sintering or pelletising process and subsequently blast furnace ironmaking. It is therefore important to consider this value when developing projects, making mine planning/cut-off grade decisions, and in setting quality price differentials.This paper describes the use of the Marx value in use (VIU) model to quantify the downstream value of iron ores. The Marx model consists of heat and mass balance modules for sintering, pelletising and a rigorous two-stage heat and mass balance model of blast furnace ironmaking. Mass balance and cost models are applied for steelmaking, casting and rolling. The use of a heat and mass balance allows accurate comparison of the impact of raw material properties on blast furnace operation. The impact of minor elements, such as alumina, silica and phosphorus, and metallurgical properties on ironmaking is described, and examples given for the relative value of haematite, Marra Mamba, and channel iron deposit (CID) ores.

In January 2008 Chirano Gold Mines Limited committed to expansion of the Chirano Gold Project from its existing design capacity of 2 Mtpa ROM ore to a new design value of 3.5 Mtpa. In addition to increased throughput, the design had to contend with increasing ore hardness and competency, while at the same time make cost effective use of existing equipment with minimum disruption to existing production. The solution adopted involved some novel approaches including tertiary crushing and operation of the SABC circuit in overflow ball mill mode and parallel elution with a common acid wash column. This paper describes the approach taken to the design of these elements to achieve a cost effective and safe capacity expansion.

Mining organisations grapple with the same problems year after year, wasting incredible amounts of time and money. According to estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO), over one million work-related deaths occur annually, and hundreds of millions of workers suffer from workplace accidents and occupational exposure to hazardous substances worldwide. Many accident reports cite human failure as a primary cause (Busse and Johnson, 1998). The workers at the Bhopal chemical plant pumped methyl isocyanate into a leaking tank (Morehouse and Subramaniam, 1986). On 3 December 1984, more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, immediately killing at least 3800 people and causing significant morbidity and premature death for many thousands more. The company involved in what became the worst industrial accident in history immediately tried to dissociate itself from legal responsibility (Broughton, 2005). Australia is not spared from safety problems either (Lucas, 2022). The ILO Convention 176 (1995) as a response provides that national law should inter alia provide for the supervision of safety and health in mines; the inspection of mines by designated inspectors of the competent authority; the procedures for reporting and investigating of fatal and serious accidents; the compilation and publication of statistics on accidents, occupational diseases and dangerous occurrences; the competent authority to suspend or restrict mining activities on safety and health grounds until conditions giving rise to the suspension are addressed; and worker consultation on matters related to safety and health in mines. This has assisted in getting enough data to define the magnitude of the problem to the mining sector.

"Brazil is the sixth worldwide producer of aluminum and Votorantim (Metals) has been operating three bauxite open pit mines in a particular way of working. In those the deposits occur on the top of hills, under forest, coffee, eucalyptus plantation or pasture area.The deposits are not large and normally mining takes an average of two months to be completed before starting the rehabilitation process, which demands a good strategy in mining planning to achieve the production goals.The benefit function developed to select feasible areas uses, beyond production costs, fees from the owner by using their area and rehabilitation cost. Both are based on land use and occupation field survey data. In this process each area with different land use receives a specific rehabilitation cost as input into a block model.Once the selection is made the mining schedule begins, taking into consideration the following premise: the orebody needs to be mined in a short period of time because during this time, the surface owners receive from Votorantim a compensation based on the expected profits from their plantation or pasture, plus royalties related to the ore amount existing in their area.Not all operations have waste dumps. Waste is pushed down by bulldozers to the lower part of the ore border. After loading and transporting ore, the waste is handled back to the mined area to fit the topography. With this step concluded, the mined area is directed to the environmental team who, alongside university partners, develop land reclamation to return them to their owners, eg in 2011, 110 ha were rehabilitated of which 29 per cent is native forest.Votorantim closes many mined areas a year and currently the entire mine planning considers this particular way of operation, making profit with minimum interference with the community and the environment.CITATION:Artioli, P, Kato, M S, Romanel, A and Piermatei, M P, 2012. High temperatures and pressures are required to obtain acceptable stripping rates. Higher chemically induced stripping rates could reduce the need for higher temperatures which lead to cyanide losses. The higher rates could lead to lower carbon inventories and higher gold production. This paper reports laboratory and continuous test unit data which strongly suggest that the preceding can be achieved. New stripping agents demonstrate efficient stripping under conditions of cyanide depletion such as after carbon acid washing. Stripping times for gold and silver can be reduced by at least half compared to caustic cyanide through the use of these novel substances.

High stress in rock masses can cause significant instability problems such as squeezing deformation in soft rock and rock bursts in hard rock. The support system applied in burst-prone areas in high-stress conditions is required to be able to carry high load and accommodate large deformation of the rock mass without experiencing any serious damage. Yielding support systems are promising to provide support for both squeezing and burst-prone rock mass encountered in mining or tunnelling at depth. They are ideally strong and stiff initially and then ductile after yielding (Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou, 2020). With respect to support design, a ground support system has to create a safe working environment under both static and dynamic loading conditions by providing the functions of reinforcing, retaining, holding and connecting elements (Cai and Kasier, 2018). Rigid rock bolts and cable bolts perform reinforcing and holding functions of a ground support system. In highly fractured ground or with large excavation spans (eg at roadway intersections or in caverns), unstable ground depth can exceed the length of typical rigid rock bolts (ie greater than ~3.0 m). In such cases, flexible cable bolts are needed to tie the reinforced and retained rock mass back to deeper and more stable rock. The flexibility of cable bolts allows anchor lengths greater than the tunnel opening that would otherwise restrict rigid bolts. Cable bolts also offer higher strength to weight ratio, with tensile strengths 2–3 times that of standard rebar bolts. This high strength comes at the cost of lower strain tolerance, typically around 5–7 per cent at break. Despite the lower strain tolerance, cable bolts are often used as dynamic support in demanding burst-prone ground conditions. The lower strain tolerance is compensated by allowing sufficient free length for stretching or incorporating a yielding device. There are a number of dynamic cable bolts available on the market and a number of testing campaigns have been undertaken to quantify the dynamic performance of these cable bolts. This paper reviews the existing range of dynamic cable bolts and discusses the potential areas for improvement and further research.

The mining industry is experiencing change in the governance of tailings facilities (TFs). Guidance and regulations across many jurisdictions contribute to this amorphous change. The Canadian Dam Association, Mining Association of Canada, Australian National Committee on Large Dams, and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, produced by the International Council on Mining and Metals, are establishing guidelines for more rigorous industry governance. Evolving guidance regarding TFs is developing concurrently with a shortage of experienced tailings engineers, which adversely affects the resource base available to support new governance. This paper presents an updated semi-quantitative estimate of the impending resource shortage of qualified tailings professionals. Updates are provided herein for the estimated number of TFs worldwide, which included available data on active and inactive TFs, as well as the estimated labor resources required to service these facilities. The tailings labor shortage is discussed in the context of academic and professional training currently available to increase the quantity of trained personnel. This paper represents a discrete moment in time as contributions to the available information and inventories accessed continue to improve, but as of today are incomplete. However, the data and information included provide insight into the resource deficiencies currently within our profession, training and education opportunities to address those resource deficiencies, and a snapshot of a recent professional training course offered on mine tailings.

Creative mine-designs are constantly being applied in the deep platinum mining industry in South Africa. Recently, this has resulted in deep hot mine-designs including room and pillar, bord and pillar or stall and pillar layouts and the use of in-stope trackless mechanisation. In these mines, the ventilation systems use refrigerated air and high fan pressures and as a result ventilation leakage can have a huge impact. Leakage is a serious impediment to cost-effective operation and potential leakage in future projects is a major factor in judging project viability. This paper describes certain mine layouts and quantifies the extent of the leakage. Based on typical field data, a range of seals from ævery poorÆ to ævery goodÆ was defined and used to estimate overall leakage. Within these mine networks the ventilation pressure, temperature and density all vary significantly and with the multiplicity of leakage paths it was necessary to make use of the VUMA-network simulation package. For the examples examined, the leakage was found to be up to 85 per cent for æpoorÆ category seals and up to 50 per cent for ægoodÆ category seals. The total air flow (and refrigeration) requirements grow exponentially with strike distance due to the compounding effects of higher pressure and more leakage paths. It is shown that beyond certain depths and strike distances the leakage will become so great that it will be impossible to operate cost-effectively û even with ægoodÆ seals. Indeed, in these examples the projects were not considered viable in their original format because of the high ventilation-cooling costs and the mine-designs were modified to include footwall drive systems û the cost of which was justified by the reduced strategic risk to operating ineffectiveness due to leakage.

A trigger action response plan (TARP) provides a structured response to escalating levels of risk. In mining, TARPs are typically applied to primary hazards such as inrush, strata failure or heating. Necessary for the creation and deployment of a TARP is a monitoring system capable of detecting deviations from normal conditions. The advent of real-time instruments capable of measuring diesel particulate matter now permit decision-making within shifts to address possible overexposure. Deploying a TARP for diesel exhaust emissions can lower the probability of a person’s average exposure (over a full shift) exceeding the exposure standard by detecting deviations of diesel particulate concentrations from normal conditions. This enables pre-emptive action to mitigate or protect. Another goal is to drive ambient air concentrations lower through the application of corrective actions as a result of instances where concentrations exceed ‘normal’.CITATION:Knott, P G, Evans, C, Velge, F and Jeffery, J, 2015. MacPhersons Reward gold deposit is in a post-kinematic tonalite intrusion which is a setting different from many other deposits of the Coolgardie goldfield that are hosted in early Archaean tholeiitic sills or meta-sedimentary rocks. Gold mineralisation at MacPhersons Reward consists of auriferous quartz veins that are best developed in the tonalite but extend to the adjacent komatiitic rocks and along the lithological contact zones. The gold-related alteration halo is dominated by biotite-chlorite and pyrrhotite. Unlike many other Coolgardie deposits, the As concentrations are low.

Phyllite waste rock at the Simandou Pic de Fon and Oueleba Iron Ore deposits (Guinea, West Africa) variably weather to form clay-rich rocks. This weathering modifies the mineralogical, geochemical and mechanical properties of the phyllites. Final pit walls will largely be formed in phyllite, so it is critical that the slope design takes account of the distribution and variability of weathering within this material. Phyllite intact material strength has been correlated with geochemistry (ie mineralogy) facilitating the establishment of domains of intact rock strength (IRS). In order to calibrate this geochemically-based strength model, core from diamond drilling (DD), comprising a variety of phyllite material types (from soft clay to moderate strength rock), was geotechnically logged to assess intact strength; further validation was achieved by uniaxial compression (UCS) testing and point load tests (PLT). The correlation between geochemistry and strength offers a potentially powerful tool for differentiating basic mechanical properties of the rock mass, especially at Simandou where a significant proportion of the resource drilling is done by reverse circulation (RC). Unlike DD, reliable measurements of material strength from RC samples can prove difficult, especially in clay-rich material. Therefore, gaining information from routine geochemical assay results, independent of the sampleÆs physical integrity, is a valuable and cost-effective source of reliable empirical data. Data acquired using this approach provides an opportunity to develop strength domains, which are integrated into mine planning block models. In combination with other geotechnical characteristics, this can be a valuable input to the development of geotechnical models. This technique has allowed spatially representative rock strength data to be derived and offers the potential for optimising pit slope angles in areas where hitherto conservative design criteria had been assumed.CITATION:Jeffcoate, A, Campbell, M, Vannay, J-C and Perriaux, B, 2013.
