Mine site rehabilitation generally includes the re-shaping of overburden to create a final landform, manipulation of substrates and subsequent revegetation. Due to the wide range of environmental variables that influence rehabilitation progression, having clearly-stated final land-use goals and ongoing significant contributions to the planning process, from prefeasibility through to mine closure, is essential for achieving stable landforms and sustainable rehabilitated communities. Two examples of rehabilitation processes in the phosphate rich region of North West Queensland are used to illustrate some of the possible benefits of early planning and communication of rehabilitation requirements.Approximately 160 km south of Mount Isa, Incitec Pivot Limited operates a 35 year old open cut mine at Phosphate Hill. Monitoring of rehabilitation areas and selected analogue sites is undertaken annually, but the initial landform design, substrate management and species selection has created a difficult environment for revegetated areas to successfully establish. Constant management input (such as weed management, erosion control, supplementary seeding, etc) will, therefore, be required over a long time frame.The second example uses exploratory drilling and historic costean pits at Legend International HoldingÆs Paradise South site, 135 km north of Mount Isa, to determine the success of natural vegetation colonisation on waste rock and compacted soils, and the effects of cattle grazing on recolonisation. This information can be used by planners of the mine life to inform possible end-land use decisions and proposed completion criteria.In a semi-arid environment such as North West Queensland, the creation of a post-mine landscape suitable for nature conservation and/or grazing can be an arduous task. The input from environmental personnel at all stages of the mining process will positively impact upon the quality of the resulting rehabilitation and ensure undesirable legacy issues are minimised.CITATION:Gillespie, M J and Erskine, P D, 2012. "Evolution Mining is the sole owner of the Mt Rawdon open cut operation, located 75 km south-west of Bundaberg in Queensland, Australia (Figure 1). It is a massive, volcanically hosted, low-grade gold deposit that exhibits excellent characteristics conducive to low cost mining and treatment.In 2014, Mt Rawdon began investigating initiatives to deliver higher mill throughputs without any significant capital expenditure or modifications to the existing processing plant. Various studies have shown throughput increases are possible by applying more blast energy, essentially by reducing feed size through blasting and leaving less work for the comminution circuits (Brent et al, 2013; Ziemski, 2011; Workman and Eloranta, 2003).Given that 53 per cent of energy used on a mine site is consumed by the comminution circuit, with only two per cent being consumed by drill and blast (Smith, 2013), it makes logical sense for a mining operation to align their drill and blast with their processing plant. The term commonly used when exploring this relationship is a ‘Mine to Mill’ program.Over nearly 12 months, various blasting options and Mine to Mill methodologies were tested at Mt Rawdon. Throughout the journey, it was abundantly clear that the Mine to Mill initiative is not as simple as making one technical or physical change and expecting an improvement. Rather, true sustainable improvements demand a paradigm shift across both the mining and processing cultures, where all departments are aligned and working towards the one outcome. This true overarching Mine to Mill mentality, enabled by Vistis™ 250 high energy bulk explosive, ultimately led to a sustained increase in throughput and profitability of the Mt Rawdon operation.Citation:Wallace, G and Morton, D, 2016. "Copper-ammonia-thiosulfate?leaching of gold has been researched for several decades as a potential alternative to cyanidation. However, this technology has not yet been applied commercially due to many challenges such as complex solution chemistry, reagent degradation and losses, system instability with losses of precious metals and difficulties in gold recovery from the leachate. Progress has been made at CSIRO in tackling some of these challenges including:better understanding and control of the leach conditions to minimise reagent losses whilst maximising gold recovery use of strong base ion exchange resins to recover the gold strategies to deal with polythionates that adsorb competitively with gold on ion exchange resins development and evaluation of process flow sheets.As a result there has been increased interest from the gold industry and renewed activities to develop thiosulfate based processes for gold recovery. One application area, which has been developed to the point of piloting, is the treatment of gravity gold concentrates using a copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach with ion exchange recovery of the gold thiosulfate. It is generally known that Charters Towers was discovered by Mosman, Clarke and Fraser in 1871. However, the time was ripe, and these three were barely in front of others. There is one account that prospectors from Ravenswood visited the area months before but decided it was too far from water, and that one of them had told Mosman and party of the find. There is another account that Joe Larkins found the discoverers before they had registered any ground - this may explain Mosman's quick departure for Ravenswood.When the news spread, the rush was rapid, and there was soon a sizeable population: probably too many, as within twelve months the infant settlement was under considerable stress. First, the presiding Gold Commissioners had adopted "unusual and arbitary" interpretations of the Regulations, and many of the miners were aggrieved; Charters, the senior Commissioner, was accused of favouring moneyed interests, and of retiring ill whenever a brawl or confrontation occured. As a result, the law of the field soon became "the survival of the strong". Second, the settlers were, divided on where the main town should be: Millchester, near the water, or Charters Towers near the mines. Third, the discovery of gold at the Millchester Deep Lead in August, 1872 was followed by highly exaggerated accoants in_' the southern papers, apparently fabricated by local business speculators. The resulting rush resulted in hundreds of unlucky prospectors having to return or seek other fields. In that period two men were killed in squabbles over ground. To make matters worse, by October 1872 a drought had set in, water cost three pence a bucket, fodder was scarce, cartage expensive, and the price of crushing ore rose to thirty shillings per ton.

Gold mining is a major contributor to the South African economy, but is associated with several environmental issues such as acid rock drainage (ARD). ARD is due to the oxidation of sulfides in gold tailings and is characterised by low pH, high sulfate content and elevated concentrations of heavy metals that contaminates scarce water resources and subsequently limits the use of such waters without treatment. Treatment strategies can only be implemented if the acid-generating potential of mine wastes is effectively predicted using common static and kinetic acid prediction tests. The choice of test performed is usually a trade-off between the number of samples, speed of the test, cost of the analysis and level of information obtained. Often the results of these various tests are not consistent with one another. This study uses mineralogy to analyse biokinetic test results of a Witwatersrand gold sample in order to improve the understanding of behaviour of mine wastes under different ARD prediction test conditions.All ARD prediction testing methods investigated in this study showed that the gold sample is considered to be potentially acid forming with net acid generation (NAG) pH of 2.5 and net acid producing potential (NAPP) of 36 kg H2SO4/t. Results of biokinetic test showed that ANC was consumed within four days confirming acid producing potential of the sample with low neutralising potential as observed from acid base accounting (ABA) (4.7 kg H2SO4/t) and mineralogy (4.9 kg H2SO4/t). Results generated in this study demonstrated importance of mineralogy in both understanding the controlling reaction mechanisms playing key role in ARD formation and its capability as a prediction technique. Future work will focus on the application of mineralogy in interpreting the behaviour of mine waste under different static test conditions with a view to assessing their applicability and reliability in estimating potential acid generating characteristics of gold tailings.CITATION:Dyantyi, N, Becker, M, Broadhurst, J L, Harrison, S T L and Franzidis, J-P, 2013. Over the decades, Redpath has undertaken a multitude of tunnelling and underground excavation projects for civil and mining clients both domestically and internationally. These projects have been undertaken through varying strata conditions with differing excavation methods in remote locations and in central business districts.With the recent turbulent nature of the global financial environment, project drivers have been challenged with the emphasis being placed on methods to gain early access to orebodies, rapid development techniques, lower capital costs and reduced labour requirements to name a few.A number of mining companies seeking to achieve these objectives have commenced the journey to better understand the operational constraints, challenges and opportunities that may be available with the use of alternative excavation methods.The development of safe and effective alternative excavation methods that comply with both domestic and international mining legislation and regulatory requirements is a challenge the industry needs to embrace. Given the current cost pressures being faced by the Australian mining industry, some alternative excavation methods offer the potential for longer term sustainability and rapid development of resources.More recently work has been undertaken on a project that challenged the norm and implemented an alternative excavation method with the use of an excavator with a rotating drum cutter head.This paper will review this recent project and provide technical and operational insight into some of the challenges faced in implementing an alternative excavation method in the metalliferous industry.CITATION:Donnelly, C, Ramage, G and Burke, R, 2014. In this study, the use of carbon neutral biochars as reducing agents in the pyrometallurgical treatment of nickel slag was investigated at 1400°C in order to recover valuable elements such as copper and nickel from the slag. A large amount of slag is generated during the nickel matte smelting. Nickel slag contains valuable elements such as copper, nickel and cobalt, which can be recovered. Disposal of this slag results in loss of resources and may cause pollution of the environment. It is important to retrieve these metals for environmental and economic reasons. In this study, the slag was reacted with non-fossil reducing agents (biochar) which were produced from hydrolysis lignin and black pellet biomass pyrolyzed at 600 and 1200°C and with metallurgical coke for comparison. The reduction experiments were done at 1400°C for 15, 30 and 60 mins under inert gas atmosphere. The samples were quickly quenched and analysed with Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The results showed that the use of biochar resulted in faster reaction kinetics in the reduction process compared to coke. The fast reaction kinetics is attributed to the relatively high content of volatiles in this biochar, leading to gas formation and thus mixing of the sample material. Moreover, thermodynamic modelling was also performed using FactSage™ to simulate equilibria with different amounts of biochar. The metal to slag distribution coefficient calculated from the results of thermodynamic modelling were consistent with experimental results. In addition, thermodynamic calculations confirmed that nickel is reduced rapidly and it deports to the metal alloy phase. As the reduction progresses or extra reductant is available for reactions, more iron is deported to the metal phase. The calculations also revealed that Zn vaporises into the gas phase.

Geochemical data from drill core samples is used in mineral exploration to enable geologists to understand subsurface geology. However, it is challenging to analyse these data sets rigorously and consistently. Manual data interpretation relies on the knowledge and experience of logging geologists. When multiple geologists are involved, it is possible to introduce inconsistencies in logged lithology type and scale of logging (‘splitters’ versus ‘lumpers’). Machine learning (ML) is a powerful tool for analysing high dimensional data (ie data with many variables) and large data sets (ie data with many samples). However, ML methods applied to drill hole samples do not incorporate spatial information and this can result in high misclassification rates and small-scale ‘noisy’ results. We demonstrate the use of multiscale spatial analysis (wavelet tessellation) as a pre-ML step to analyse spatial information. This step helps reduce misclassification and filter out unwanted small-scale variation in the data. In an experiment, we used wavelet tessellation and supervised ML to predict litho-geochemical rock types from geochemistry data. The data set is from the Valhalla uranium deposit near Mount Isa, northern Queensland. First, geochemical knowledge and statistical analysis was used to select appropriate geochemical elements for litho-geochemical classification. Second, the elements were processed using multiscale spatial analysis. Third, we trained a Random Forest model with the data set and found that the model performs worse in predicting rare rock samples than common ones. We applied over-sampling and down-sampling methods in aim to overcome this issue. As a conclusion, the combination of multiscale spatial analysis (to define rock unit boundaries) and Random Forests (to classify rock units) is a good method for rapid and accurate analysis of drill hole geochemistry.

The Melbourne City Link Project is a privately funded road infrastructure project linking three significant existing freeways in the vicinity of the Central Business District. The State Government, through the Melbourne City Link Authority, has contracted Transurban to build, own and operate City Link for a concession period of 34 years before the road network is transferred to the State. Transurban has a contract with Transfield Obayashi Joint Venture (TOJV) to design and construct the works. The project is divided into the southern and western sections and the tunnel works comprised the significant component of the Southern Link. Outside of the cut and cover tunnels at the portals, the driven tunnels component was constructed by TOJV direct labour. TOJV subcontracted all design work to a joint venture of Hyder Consulting and CMPS&F (Hyder/CMP). The geology in the tunnel corridor and generally below the city of Melbourne is highly variable and constantly changing. The tunnels were driven, for the most part, in siltstone and sandstone of the Silurian age, but also intersected overlying basalts and clays. The Silurian bedrock is a fractured aquifer that is connected to overlying alluvial aquifers. Consequently, the construction of the tunnels was a complex engineering task. This paper details the operational relationships and procedures developed to deliver a design that was aligned to the construction constraints and delivered an end product that met all technical, quality, cost and program goals.

With the burgeoning opportunities for new gold mines to be developed the opportunity now exists for a reassessment of the optimal processing path for these gold ores. Projects have traditionally followed the path of whole ore cyanidation with either Carbon In Pulp (CIP), Carbon In Leach (CIL) or Merrill Crowe. The challenge ahead is whether these traditional processing methods are the best option for stakeholders, or to go beyond CIP and use a combination of currently available technologies that can be used to provide gold recovery at a significantly reduced capital cost and minimal deleterious impact on the environment. Either stand alone or combinations of gravity concentration and flotation, can produce a gold bearing concentrate that can then be fed directly to a batch or continuous intensive cyanidation unit. Treatment of a gravity/flotation concentrate by intensive cyanidation may be processed by the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) developed by Gekko Systems of Australia. The advantages of the technology combining gravity/flotation followed by intensive cyanidation are significantly reduced capital costs; improved safety due to reduced cyanide inventories; the majority of tailings un-contaminated by cyanide; less energy required due to an opportunity for an increase in grind size û reducing green house gas emissions; detoxification of concentrate tailings can minimise tailings disposal and containment requirements.

Based on the cubic law, the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities has the most significant effect on the hydraulic conductivity of jointed rocks. The hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities is a stress-dependant parameter and reduces with increasing applied stress. Furthermore, the rock stress increases with increasing depth. Therefore, hydraulic aperture is a depth-dependant parameter. In this paper, new empirical equations are introduced to calculate the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities at different depths. These equations were developed on the basis of back analysis of compiled packer tests from different actual cases. They provide the capability to calculate range of variation and average hydraulic aperture when the orientation of discontinuity and field stress tensor are given. Furthermore, it is possible to calculate the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities when its value is given for another depth. A hydraulic aperture of 7.7?µm was calculated by this method, comparing well with a reported site value of 8.3?µm for rock discontinuities at the Stripa mine project at a depth of 385?m. There are still vast areas of Australia in which either the hydrocarbon potential has already been indicated but from which no hydrocarbons have been produced or else are completely untested. Despite the lack of recent new oil discoveries, it is anticipated that initial gas discoveries in these areas will be followed by oil discoveries as has happened historically. General exploration activities are continually providing new information that is being input to update previous hydrocarbon assessments for Australia, and all indications are that future exploration efforts will discover a lot of gas, some small oil pools and there is a chance to prove a major new oil province. Because of this, it is anticipated that reserves growth will continue at the average historical rate of about 200 MMB/year until the year 2000. The most frequent scenario will be costly exploration resulting in small oil discoveries and high development costs. This, in the past, has resulted in low profitability for Australian oil exploration, but windfalls for the Australian government.

Studies by Telecom showed that the existing cable tunnel system in the Melbourne C.B.D. required expansion in order to meet the future telecommunications needs of the City. Due to physical locations of the various telephone exchanges in the CBD, together with a necessity to connect into existing ATC tunnels, a network of low cover small sized tunnels was proposed to maintain and extend the existing telephone cable network. This paper reviews the feasibility studies, design criteria and constructional aspects involved in building 5 tunnels (total length of 1850 m) and 13 chambers (4 open cut and 9 underground)-together with ancillary works, which form part of the new cable tunnel network.

Geometallurgy is not a mechanism designed to replace current geological and metallurgical deposit characterisation but an added component required to understand orebody variability. Current geological characterisation approaches focus on understanding deposit genesis aimed at identifying new mineralised regions and metallurgical characterisation determines parameters required for engineering design of processing plants. Geometallurgical integration has the task of drawing on aspects of each stream to enable spatial mapping of performance indices across a deposit. It is a complimentary activity to current practice and adds a new dimension to orebody knowledge. Although the notion of conducting an integrated geological and metallurgical analysis is not a new concept, limited publications exist in the field proposing integrated methods, with several technical issues existing in current geometallurgical integration approaches. An iterative method drawing on existing geological and metallurgical characterisation and new measurement tools and inputs is proposed. The integrated method comprises of discrete components dynamically linked together through iterative feedback loops with each component having a specific purpose achieved by applying a range of data acquisition technologies and statistical tests. The key outcomes of the method are:overcoming the lack of optimised geometallurgical domains relevant to processing performance,development of a rigorous approach to identifying parameters controlling processability,improved protocols for relevant metallurgical test data and sample selection, andability to generate greater data support to enable rigorous geostatistical modelling of geometallurgical attributes. Magnesite and dolomite are two salt-type minerals. The surface characteristics of these two minerals are almost the same. It is very difficult to remove dolomite from magnesite ores by flotation process. The present study was performed to develop a new collector and a better flotation scheme for magnesite from dolomite. The flotation tests show that there exists a significant difference in flotability between magnesite and dolomite when dodecyl phosphate synthesised with dodecanol, phosphorus oxychloride and other chemicals is used as collector. Sodium silicate was used as the modifier to improve flotation selectivity. It was found that sodium silicate selectively depressed magnesite at pH 4.5 - 7.5. The separation of magnesite from dolomite was achieved in a reverse flotation which resulted in a 76.1 per cent yield of magnesite with a grade of 47.3 per cent at 100 ppm dodecyl phosphate and 75 ppm sodium silicate. The flotation mechanism was investigated by characterising surface electrical properties and measuring the adsorption density of the reagents on magnesite and dolomite.

The 15-year long debate between the industry, Government and Aboriginal people about the rights and wrongs of Land Rights, the right of Aboriginal people to control development on their land and the relationship between the parties, has been long and often bitter. It has so far been a war of words and often the truth has been the first casualty. This paper looks at the debate and presents the perspective of Aboriginal people, as well as looking at how the industry and Aboriginal people can work together for everyone's benefit. It addresses such matters as: ò why Aboriginal people believe they have the right to control development on their land; ò the perception that Aboriginal people are anti-development; ò the perception that Aboriginal land is 'locked-up'; and ò how companies can negotiate with Aboriginal people.

This paper explores the techniques and issues in the acquisition and analysis of mine production data for tactical decision making in production control. The use of information and operations management tools is presented in the context of block caving studies, with particular focus on the relationship between secondary breaking and LHD production performance.

During the period 1981 - 1991, Esso Australia and their Joint Venture partners have discovered about 180 MB of liquids (crude and condensate), 60 MB natural gas liquids and 800 - 1000 GCF of gas. A total of 48 wildcat wells were drilled including 12 new pool discoveries drilled from platform facilities. Significant discoveries include the West Tuna, Kipper, Blackback and Terakihi fields. These four discoveries, contribute to 75 per cent of the total reserves discovered in the last decade and were all high-risk plays. The Kipper discovery, in the pre-Latrobe Golden Beach Group top sealed by volcanics, and the Blackback-Terakihi discoveries, located on the present day continental slope in water depths ranging from 300-700 metres are both the result of successful drilling outside the traditional exploration bounds for the basin. During the last decade, Esso and its partners have spent about A$400M on wildcat exploration activity. The exploration success rate, excluding platform based drilling, has been 50 per cent for wildcat wells. On a technical front, the last decade has heralded substantial improvements in seismic data quality. Peak frequency content in seismic data at the Latrobe Group target levels is now double that of the early 1980s. Significant advances have also been made in our understanding of sequence stratigraphy, geochemistry and geohistory of the basin.

Acidless and fluoless flotation is a new method for separating feldspar from quartz at the natural pH value of tap water in the absence of any acid and fluoride and other inorganic reagents. The paper introduces the production application of this method in plants and research results on the mechanism involved in the flotation method.
