The concept of vertical pit mining has been developed as an alternative mining method for the exploitation from surface of small, vertical or near-vertical, massive orebodies down to depths of some 200 m, where ore extraction from conventional open pit excavations is rendered uneconomic due to high associated waste:ore mining ratio. Systematic lateral support maintains vertical pit sides, thereby minimising waste mining volumes. Stability analysis techniques have been developed for design of this lateral support, with the support quantum, primarily comprising long cable anchors, dependent upon country rock strength characteristics and pit configuration. Where the cost of support is less than the cost of the comparable conventional pit waste excavation, vertical pit mining becomes an economically viable alternative, additionally providing the benefit of reduced environmental impact and rehabilitation requirements for the mining area. The technique has been successfully applied for the mining of a chrome deposit in Zimbabwe to an 80 m depth, believed to be unique in the world, and a full feasibilty study for a 3000 m2 diamond pipe has been carried out for mining to 200 m depth.

Springvale Mine is an underground coal mine in the western coalfield of New South Wales which utilises retreat longwall mining technique. The mine encountered significant gateroad floor heave issues during retreat of LW415. Floor heave has subsequently impeded longwall advance as well as longwall bolt up and recovery to some extent during the extraction of the next five longwalls. Floor heave at Springvale Mine develops throughout the lifecycle of the mine roadways, and is most prevalent in longwall gateroads. Floor heave has been measured as early as 2 weeks after roadway development and continues to develop through the post-development phase, with a rapid increase in close proximity to the longwall face. This paper presents a case study of the evolution of understanding of floor heave behaviour at Springvale Mine based on geotechnical characterisation, an intensive convergence monitoring program (roof and floor movement) and spatial correlation of monitored locations with longwall face position. The analysis considers previously known factors contributing to floor heave including mining depth, geological and physical properties of the rock mass and mine design geometry. Investigation results indicate a strong correlation between floor heave magnitude and roof dilation magnitude, geophysically inferred faulting in underlying strata, areas of localised stress concentration and mine roadway dimensions. This paper also discusses the predictive model which was developed as a result of the study, which is now the basis of the floor heave removal program used to manage roadway convergence at the mine. Process control emerged in the mid-1960s as a new and exciting method of improving the performance of mineral processing operations. The early Australian developments, principally in Broken Hill and Mount Isa, were based on pioneering work in instrumentation, the availability of small digital computers and a particularly effective partnership between companies with technological foresight and University and CSIRO research groups. Initial progress was rapid and within ten years many plants were committed to process control. Process monitoring is now routine and most circuits have some level of control. However, few plants have comprehensive optimising control systems as the difficulty of developing control strategies which can cope with the wide variety of conditions encountered in most mineral plants has been fully appreciated. This paper summarises past experience and assesses the degree of application of different forms of process control in metallurgical plants. Barriers to the effective utilisation of opt rising control are identified and some suggestions for advancing the application of control are made.

Beneficiation of low-grade fine-grained hematite ores becomes increasingly important due to rapid depletion of high quality iron ore resources. However, fine particles, especially ultra-fine particles, make efficient beneficiation of these ores more difficult. Therefore, methods to reduce the influence of fine particles must be considered to achieve better beneficiation performance. Analysis and systematical beneficiation tests were carried out on an ultra-fine-grained hematite ore slime from washing a fine grained hematite ore. Ore particles were found to be presented in loose soil. While some of the ore particles were agglomerated, they were very fine and contained up to 76.5 per cent -0.023 mm material. In this paper, using a single magnetic separation flow sheet with sodium silicate (SS) as a dispersing agent, a concentrate containing 65.05 per cent Fe was obtained at an iron recovery of 68.58 per cent from the hematite ore slime of 56.65 per cent Fe. The single magnetic separation flow sheet was simple and reliable, the agent SS was effective in dispersing ultra-fine particles. The performances of ten field-scale experimental final covers were evaluated over an eight-year period. The covers were evaluated as part of the rehabilitation of acid generating coarse coal reject dumps and opencast coalmines in the Northern KwaZulu Natal province in South Africa. The main purpose of the experimental covers was to restrict rainfall infiltration into acid generating coal discard. The mean average rainfall over the monitoring period was 839 mm with 84 per cent occurring between October and April. The average evaporation was 2100 mm. The site is described as a ædry siteÆ since the evaporation exceeds rainfall by a significant margin. Approximately 30 per cent of rainfall infiltrated the uncovered cells. Rainfall infiltration into the fine coal discard was reduced to 20 per cent and 15 per cent for a 300 mm and 500 mm cover respectively. Infiltration was reduced to ten and 12 per cent of rainfall for fine coal discard provided with a 1000 mm double soil cover and a compacted bottom layer. This relatively high infiltration was probably caused by moisture being entrapped in the bottom retentive layer, and not being released by evapotranspiration. The best performing cover comprised 1000 mm single soil with a compacted bottom layer and infiltration was reduced to four per cent of rainfall. Rainfall infiltration into sloped cells varied between seven per cent and 14 per cent of rainfall. The computer software, SoilCover, was used to predict infiltration and moisture content in the cover. Predictions of rainfall infiltration were accurate, but were less accurate for covers where the hydraulic properties of field compacted soils were not adequately characterised. Oxygen ingress was significantly reduced for cells provided with a 1000 mm cover. Oxygen concentrations were generally below one per cent, with the exception during exceptionally dry periods when the cover dried out, resulting in increased oxygen ingress. For other covers, and the uncovered cells, oxygen concentrations were close to atmospheric concentrations. During the eight-year monitoring period, acid breakthrough occurred in five of the cells, including three uncovered cells, one cell with a 300 mm cover and one sloped cell. In contrast, cells covered with 1000 mm, bottom compacted soils shows a marked improvement of leachate quality, indicating that sulfide oxidation processes have been slowed. There was a distinct relationship between oxygen ingress and leachate quality for all of the cells. No cover degradation was evident over the eight-year period, except for some erosion observed on a sloped cell. The results indicate that the onset of acid drainage can be delayed by perhaps hundreds of years and salinity loads can be reduced by more than 90 per cent, if coarse coal reject dumps in the KwaZulu-Natal provinces in South Africa are provided by an adequate cover system. These research outcomes can be extrapolated and applied to other dry site regions where similar materials are being considered.

Lithium battery electric powered vehicles and machines (BEVs) continue to gain traction inunderground mining use, with predictions they will dominate the underground light and heavy vehicle fleets for some mines within the next decade. There are clear advantages for ventilation systems through reduced heat output and the elimination of harmful exhaust gases and diesel particulates. However, the risks and effects of BEV fire emergencies for underground personnel and ventilationsystems are still largely in the early stages of analysis and understanding. This paper conducts an industry review of a selection of lithium battery fire incidents and research.A research paper review on lihthium fire behaviour, intensity and toxicity will be analysed and comparisons made with equivalent diesel machinery fires for context. Guidelines for mine firemodelling parameters will be offered to assist in predicting the behaviour, heat and emissions from BEV fires, and recommendations and conclusions will be drawn on the specific hazards of lithium battery fires compared to conventional diesel powered machines.

In April 1994 the Victorian Premier announced new State initiatives, collectively termed the Victorian Initiative for Minerals and Petroleum (VIMP), for exploration totalling $16.5 m over three years. The program, initially centred on the northwest of Victoria, the Eastern Highlands and the Otway Basin, is due for completion in June 1997 and has been designed to attract explorers to highly prospective but currently under-explored parts of the State. Major components of the program include acquisition of geophysical data (including airborne magnetics and radiometrics, gravity and seismic data), stratigraphic drilling, geological mapping and mineral resource data compilation. At the completion of the current program, 70 per cent of the State will have been covered by airborne magnetic and radiometric coverage at 400 m line spacing or better (Figure I) while 20 per cent of the State will have been covered by new geological mapping. The completion of database compilations for geochemistry, mine data and exploration licence summaries during the VIMP program is shown in Figure 2. The new airborne geophysical surveys have been flown partly under the VIMP program and partly by AGSO under the National Geoscience Mapping Accord (NGMA). Data from these surveys have been interpreted and incorporated into the geological mapping in order to enhance the quality of map products, especially in areas of Cainozoic cover. The first series 1:250 000 scale geological map coverage of Victoria was completed by the Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV) in 1977, and was based on compilation of historical geological mapping with minor field checking in most cases. The first metric 1:50 000 scale geology maps were also commenced in the 1970s, but were discontinued in the 1980s in favour of 1:100 000 scale map production. Driven by customer survey findings and with the benefit of detailed airborne geophysical data in the 1990s, the GSV reverted to 1:50 000 scale map production in 1995, with 1:10 000 scale maps made in areas of significant gold production. Geological reports still cover standard 1:100 000 scale map areas, but are now accompanied by four 1:50 000 scale maps. These new series 1:50 000 scale geological maps have been supported by comprehensive mine data and exploration licence summary databases in addition to the new geophysics, and benefit from the advances made in structural geological interpretation over the last decade. The new phase of geological mapping in Victoria, commenced under the NGMA in 1990 and accelerated under VIMP in 1994, has been focused in the central Victorian goldfields and eastern Highlands areas of the State (Figure 1). Results to-date have led to a number of major advances in the understanding of the eeoloeical evolution of Victoria.

This paper points to the timely importance of commencing a centrally recognised perpetual collection of mineral specimens in the Northern Territory which has as one of its objectives the collection and preservation of Northern Territory minerals of scientific, educational and heritage value. Currently in the Northern Territory there is no government department or institution that has a resourced coordinated state-wide objective to collect and document collectable mineral specimens. Specimens held in storage by the Department of Mines and Energy and the Museum and Art Galleries of the NT are not catalogued and owe their existence to fortuitous circumstances, not as a result of a planned systematic scientific approach to mineralogy. Northern Territory mineral species and unique specimens have and will continue to be driven to extinction while no central and active, recognised repository exists. This situation persists despite the fact mineral production is the Territory's largest income earner. The paper presents the arguments that hopefully will assist decision-makers to commence development of a state mineral collection lodged within an appropriate institution in the Northern Territory.

The Melbourne City Link Project has two tunnels, the Domain and Burnley Tunnels, which have been constructed by Transfield Obayashi Joint Venture (TOJV) under a design and construct contract. The two tunnels are located essentially under the Kings Domain, the Yarra River and, in the case of the longer Burnley Tunnel, under the inner suburb of Richmond. The Burnley Tunnel is 3.5 km long and reaches a depth of 65 m at the central Swan Street Shaft, the invert being at RL -60 m. The Domain Tunnel is 1.6 km long, with the invert reaching RL -20. The tunnels were driven, for the most part, in the siltstone and sandstone of the Silurian Age Melbourne Formation. Construction aspects of the driven tunnels as related to the engineering geology have been described by Hutchison et al (1998). The Silurian bedrock is a fractured rock aquifer that is connected to overlying alluvial aquifers. Excavation of the tunnels allowed temporary groundwater inflows which substantially de-pressurised portions of the various aquifers. This de-pressurisation provided the potential to accelerate on-going secondary consolidation rates of the Holocene Aged Coode Island Silt (CIS) and the older Quaternary Fishermens Bend Silt (FBS) deposits, in areas where these materials directly overly the aquifers. As a large portion of the urban area of South Melbourne and the old river course of the Yarra River contain extensive CIS deposits, and were within the drawdown influence of the tunnels, the management of the hydrogeological regime was very important. The permanent design of the tunnels comprised drained and undrained sections (a partially tanked design) which, along with some permanent recharge, provide long-term protection against the possibility of accelerated settlement rates. During construction TOJV implemented a comprehensive groundwater management plan to deal with issues related to the temporary drawdown of the aquifers and the temporary acceleration of settlement. This paper describes the hydrogeological regime, the effects of the tunnelling, the monitoring programs, the extensive temporary recharge system, and the consultation program that TOJV utilised to manage the hydrogeological issues.

The massive 1100 Orebody in Mount IsaÆs X41 Copper Mine has been extracted over the last 40 years form north to south utilising sublevel open stoping methods.De velopment has continually stepped ahead of production to provide access to new primary stoping blocks. The remaining secondary pillars contain stopes with one, two or three fill mass exposures and were constrained by access requirements and stope extraction turnaround time.The remaining southern mining areas consist of large 40 m wide by 300 to 400 m long east-west transverse pillars that have been left to provide access for ventilation and service requirements. Three large transverse cross-cuts or transverse pillars û 4180 x/c, 4010 x/c and the Panel pillar now remain. The 4180 x/c was the last major transverse pillar to be successfully broken.This transverse pillar is being extracted in a retreating sequence, creating 3SLOS stopes due to the surrounding backfilled stopes.In recent years the extraction of the first, and most critical, stopes in the transverse pillars have resulted in large changes to the induced stress field. This paper describes the extraction of the 1.1 million tonne stope P418 in the 4180 x/c pillar.T echnical challenges that were faced and how they were overcome to allow for the successful extraction of the stope are described.Critical to the success of the P418 stope extraction were the rehabilitation methodology used; extraction strategy modifications to address deteriorating ground; mass firings with multiple directional changes; managing the exposure of backfill of variable strengths; and geotechnical monitoring prior to, during and after extraction.

Proper understanding and management of production drilling in sublevel cave (SLC) mines is essential for meeting production targets and for avoiding inefficiencies that could lead to costly bottlenecks. In many SLC mine management models drilling is considered a derivative activity of firing and bogging. Its scheduling is considered to be implied in a firing schedule and given an arbitrary target completion, ‘several weeks’ or ‘a month’, ahead of production firing. Like development, drilling activities are most efficient when conducted separately from other production activities. Unlike development, however, it is not apparent during planning and feasibility how far in advance of firing drilling activities ought to be conducted. This paper presents a method of defining a minimum threshold of drilled stocks above which drilling, firing and bogging operations occur most efficiently. As an example, the drilling activities, procedures, and maintenance at Glencore Xstrata’s Ernest Henry Mine are presented, and the larger scale consequences of improvements to these areas are presented to illustrate their importance in the operation of an SLC mine.CITATION:Beal, C, 2014. Mining education in Ballarat has a long and proud history dating back to the 1870s. Today the School of Engineering continues this tradition at the University of Ballarat. The recent review of Tertiary Minerals Education by the Minerals Council of Australia has questioned the current situation regarding Minerals tertiary education in Australia and recommendations have been made regarding the future of minerals tertiary education. This paper initially examines the original recommendations made by the Minerals Council of Australia and assesses subsequent changes made to these recommendations. Secondly the paper outlines the future shape of mining education in the light of these recommendations given that they are implemented. Finally the future delivery of mining education is discussed, particularly with respect to the impact of modern technologies.

Following a decline in direct and indirect employment in the minerals industry between 2000 and 2003, the situation reversed in 2004 and employment rose by 12 per cent. Furthermore, there are forecasts of continuing employment growth in the minerals industry in the immediate future. For those of us charged with promoting the virtues of a career in the minerals industry this is encouraging news, as it provides us with the evidence to promote the increasing employment opportunities of a healthy and vibrant industry. However, for many others û particularly the employers in this industry û the news is not so rosy. The jobs are there, and in increasing numbers, but the workers arenÆt! Employers right across the industry are finding it increasingly difficult to fill vacancies with suitably qualified and skilled employees and the competition is becoming fiercer. In the minerals and energy sector, questions are being asked and solutions sought on the industryÆs ability to attract and retain a skilled workforce. From many quarters û industry, government and the education sector, calls for urgent action are becoming louder. The reasons for this are well known û the nature of the work, the remote location, perceptions of the industry, an aging workforce, the gender imbalance, the shrinking demographic of school leavers. It is the latter I wish to focus on û the Generation Y demographic û those who have recently left school, those who are in higher education or have recently entered the workforce, or those who are still at secondary school. These young people are the next cohort of potential employees for the industry. But our need for them appears to be greater that their perceived need for us! How do we engage them so they are informed about the industry? How do we inform and advise them so they are prepared to consider further education and training in disciplines and skill areas relating to our industry? How do we guide and motivate them to give it their best shot and work in it û at least for part of their working life? These are fundamental questions that many within the industry have been grappling with for quite some time. Let me share with you some of the strategies that the Minerals Council is implementing to address this issue.

A reappraisal of the stratigraphy, new regional kinematic analysis and thermobarometric data allow a new interpretation of the metamorphic zoning and tectonic structure of the Upper Eocene high-pressure metamorphic core complex of northern New Caledonia allow a three steps evolution to be proposed : 1) subduction and understacking of previously thinned continental crust elements; 2) subduction blocking due to the crustal thickening; 3) crustal thinning and extensional detachment during the diapir-like uplift and unroofing of the eclogitic core. Steps 2 and 3 may be partly contemporaneous. Such a model accounts for the thermobarometric and radiochronologic data, and also for the weakness of substratum deformation during the emplacement of the ophiolitic nappe.

Mining had a very considerable effect on the country's development. The visual evidence remaining is an integral part of New Zealand history. Early mining for manganese and copper in the 1840s was succeeded by alluvial gold rushes. These gave way to hard rock extraction, hydraulic elevation and dredging. Coal mining dating from the 1850s was fairly widespread. Other minerals were obtained on a small scale. Manufacture of mining' machinery stimulated industrial engineering enterprises. Schools of mines played a significant part in advancing technical skills and several remain as museums. Surviving mine structures and site relics are part of the industrial heritage signifying the technological and economic development of a small isolated nation. Some of these are described. Identification, recording and preservation where practicable is advocated.

Grade Engineering® is a value-driven strategy aiming to maximise benefits by exploiting intrinsic grade variability of ore deposits. It utilises a multitude of separation techniques to remove low grade material before being introduced to post-blast size reduction processes, i.e. crushing and grinding. At an operational scale, Grade Engineering® techniques can be implemented at the drill-and-blast stage, to control the degree of fragmentation in accordance with the spatial distribution of valuable minerals across an ore domain through differential blasting. It can also exploit intrinsic textural and breakage characteristics of a given ore type to reject uneconomical barren material at coarse sizes, which is known as Natural Deportment. Grade Engineering® can also be employed in the deliver stage of the mining value chain through sensor-based bulk and particle sorting. Each strategy is therefore highly dependent on the responsiveness of an orebody to available techniques. That is, the extent to which Grade Engineering® drivers would be capable of unlocking potential values of currently un-amenable orebodies depends on how detailed the heterogeneous nature of ore domains can be described. This paper considers exploring possible linkages between deportment characteristics of an ore and its competence when broken in a range of energy inputs at a particlebased level. Accordingly, potential opportunity may lie in exploring whether the intensity of input energy (or degree of fineness) can be used as a lever to improve or ‘unlock’ ore amenability to Grade Engineering® techniques. Implications from such a detailed approach offers new opportunities to enhance Grade Engineering® gains through engineering ore competence variability.

The Skybolt is a new bolt concept, point anchored with resin in large diameter holes of specific sizes 38 mm and 45 mm. The new design achieves the optimum annular spacing required for mixing the resin anchor components which is essential for optimum resin bonding of the bolt to the surrounding rock. This paper explains the load transfer mechanisms between bolt/resin/rock, unique to this bolt concept. It compares the pull-out test results to those of paddle and expansion shell type bolts, and highlights the versatility of Skybolt over existing, currently used, rock support systems and the benefits mine operators can achieve when using the Skybolt.

Copper has been mined intermittently at Gunpowder, north of Mount Isa, since 1927. Most ventures have had some initial success but fluctuating copper prices, the small-scale of the operations and the remoteness of the site led to closures or sale. Processing routes have included direct sale of high grade ore, flotation of oxide and sulphide concentrate, and copper cement production from mine solutions. Copper cathode has been produced by heap and in-place leaching coupled with solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW). Aberfoyle Limited recently purchased the Gunpowder operation and is expanding operations. An innovative high recovery tank leaching process, including a low temperature, low pressure autoclave, has been adopted. Copper cathode will be produced from an expanded solvent extraction/electrowinning plant at approximately 45 000 tonnes per year. The combination of expanded throughput and high metal recoveries will make Gunpowder a cost competitive producer.
