Narrow vein mining, as most types of mining, faces important geotechnical challenges. The specificity of geotechnical challenges in narrow vein mines stems from the nature of the deposits, which are often inclined, discordant and found within fractured rock or faults or in shear zones within country rock. This complicates the construction of representative geomechanical models and limits the applicability of several engineering design tools. Furthermore, in certain cases, the severity of encountered geotechnical problems is considerably greater in narrow vein than in wider orebodies. This paper provides an overview of geotechnical and other challenges in narrow vein mines with a focus on how these are currently addressed. Of particular concern is the use of manual labour working close to the mining face where there is greater exposure to geomechanical hazards. This review concludes with a particular emphasis on understanding the limitations of commonly used engineering tools and techniques to address geotechnical problems in narrow vein mines.CITATION:Hadjigeorgiou, J, 2012. The South Deep surface shaft system is being sunk to a final depth of 2750 in below surface and on completion will be the deepest single drop haft in the world. The shafts will intersect the target reef horizon at 2650 to below surface. In order to negate the requirement for a shaft pillar, which would he extremely large at this depth, the reef horizon in the vicinity of the intersection is currently being mined. A high quality crushed waste/classified tailings backfill is being placed in the longwall stoping panels around the shaft intersection area. This kill limit closure and ride which following shaft reef intersection could have a detrimental effect on the long term shaft stability. This paper discusses underground instrumentation results and numerical modelling exercises carried out to confirm that the shaft system will he stable throughout the life of the mine. Instrumentation projects include closure and ride measured between backfill paddocks and haulage leveling exercises carried out to determine the far field rockmass response to mining with stiff backfill.

Ranger Uranium Mine, surrounded by Kakadu National Park is located in the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics, 250 km east of Darwin, Northern Territory. A trial landform (TLF), measuring approximately 200 m by 400 m (8 ha) was constructed during late 2008 and early 2009 by Energy Resources of Australia (ERA), adjacent to the northwestern wall of the tailings storage facility at the Ranger Mine. A collaborative research program involving the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (eriss) and ERA, has been underway to measure long-term (five to ten year) rainfall, run-off, sediment and solute losses, seepage and vegetation establishment on the TLF (Saynor et al, 2012; Lowry et al, 2014). This paper reports on bed load losses from four erosion plots built on the TLF. These were achieved by physically isolating approximately 30 × 30 m areas from the surrounding landform on three sides with sidewalls along with an open polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe on the downslope side. Each plot was instrumented with a range of sensors. Two plots, 1 and 2 were constructed on waste rock material, while plots 3 and 4 were constructed on waste rock mixed with approximately 30 per cent lateritic material. Plots 1 and 4 had tube stock planted in early 2009, and plots 2 and 3 were initially planted by direct seeding in July 2009 and were infill planted with tube stock in January 2011.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Erskine, W D, 2016. It is well known that the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) can only be operated efficiently under choke feeding conditions in which a material bed is built up between the rollers to ensure interparticle breakage. By increasing the fines amount in the material bed up to a specific level with the recycling load, a uniform material bed is created and higher pressure gradient along the roller width is obtained which results in compact flakes including more fines. Extensive test work has been carried out with an industrial HPGR unit grinding cement clinker in a cement plant in Turkey. During the test work the recycling load of the circuit was changed to achieve different ratios to the fresh feed rate in order to identify the effect of the recycling load on the circuit performance. Six different tests were performed with the circuit at steady state. For each test, samples were collected from HPGR fresh feed and discharge, and total feed, then the particle size distributions of the samples were determined and mass balances around the circuit were calculated. The conclusion was that the reduction ratio of the HPGR increased with increase in recycling load. The flake densities showed the same trend with more compacted flakes being produced for higher recycling loads.

CSIRO Minerals has recently developed an electron microprobe (EMP) based imaging (or mapping) method for characterising ilmenite concentrates. The method requires an electron microprobe analyser to collect elemental X-ray maps which are then processed via an in-house developed software module (CHIMAGE). The type of information readily available from EMP mapping includes; primary phase identification, modal analysis of phases, chemical analysis of individual phases, textural information (eg the alteration stages in the formation of leucoxene or pseudorutile from primary ilmenite and the development of macro-porosity), and the identification of coatings or pore-fill material. All of these parameters will impact on the choice of future downstream processing options considered for any particular ilmenite concentrate. The method has been demonstrated to be a sensitive analytical tool for assessing the distribution of aluminosilicate minor impurities in ilmenite feedstocks from the West Coast of Australia and also for characterising the complex chrome-spinel gangue phases common in East Coast ilmenite concentrates from the Murray Basin.

The Big Wainihinihi River and tunnel are located on the western side of the Southern Alps of New Zealand within the active Alpine Fault zone, which marks the boundary between the Pacific and Australian Tectonic Plates. The tunnel was built over 100 years ago to supply water for gold mining, but it now conveys water from a high-energy intake to a canal that supplies three of TrustPower’s hydro-electric power stations with a combined installed generating capacity of 10 MW. Part of the tunnel passes through an unstable 50° schist slope, which fi rst suffered a wedge failure in the 1929 Arthur’s Pass Earthquake and was reinstated in the mid-1970s for hydro generation. In 2008, TrustPower’s monitoring system showed that the wedge failure had remobilised and that urgent remediation was required.Harker Underground Construction (Harker) was awarded a design-build contract to restore the tunnel to service by tunnelling a new central section. Their geotechnical engineers, Peters and Cheung, reviewed the tunnel’s stability and proposed a new, safer tunnel alignment, deep behind the failure wedges. This work was based on their failure model, cost-benefit studies, and engineering geology completion mapping at the time of re-opening.Construction innovation was an important factor in ensuring the project’s success, as were detailed geological and geotechnical information, a robust methodology, strong client relationship and planning. To suit the varying rock conditions and restricted space, Harker combined a traditional drill-and-blast method with light-weight modular steel sets and timber supports to reduce construction costs and mitigate support risk. To make material handing easier in the tight conditions, a special electric locomotive was designed and built and blasting confi gurations were adapted to suit varying rock conditions in the highly fractured schist.The isolated site meant interesting and unexpected challenges, particularly communications and resources (both human and material). Despite that, the project was completed within budget, on schedule, and with no lost-time injuries.

Scheelite was floated from a low-grade (0.28 per cent W03) calcitic (96.30 per cent CaCO3) scheelite ore using oleoyl sarcosine as collector and alkylated 8-hydroxyquinoline as modifier. Compared to oleoyl sarcosine alone, the grade and the recovery of scheelite concentrate were increased from 8.07 per cent to 33.54 per cent and from 55.1 per cent to 73.4 per cent, respectively. Infrared studies with pure calcite and scheelite minerals showed that while alkyl oxine is adsorbed on the scheelite surface, it is not adsorbed on the calcite.

The perception of New Zealand as an exploration destination has improved compared with other countries. There has been a realisation that New Zealand's potential is greater than previously thought. Other countries are not as attractive as before, and explorers are looking at alternatives that are geologically prospective and politically stable.   New Zealand is regarded as geologically prospective, especially for gold, with potential for world class deposits. It is also prospective for other metals, coal and industrial minerals. New Zealand is politically stable, and has an economy that is attractive to overseas investors. It is one of the least corrupt countries in the world, which overseas companies see as providing a high degree of certainty for investment.   New Zealand has good opportunities for investment in gold exploration at present. Otago has been the focus for new companies and is the favoured exploration location. Otago is regarded as very prospective, and hosts New Zealand's largest gold deposit at Macraes. There is potential for other similar deposits elsewhere in Otago.   The mineral industry previously had an excessively pessimistic view of New Zealand, which has resulted in little new investment in New Zealand for some years. Previous pessimism is turning to optimism, and there is increasing interest in New Zealand as an exploration destination by overseas explorers.

It is a very great privilege for me to be able to address you tonight and I am deeply sensible of the honour which has been done me. I am equally sensible of the inadequacy of my training for the position of President of your Institute.May I say at once what a very great pleasure it is to have so many members from the mainland States visiting us here in Tasmania. We do hope that you will find pleasure and profit in your stay.Since the Annual Conference is always held in the vicinity of one or other of the great mining fields, it has become the practice for the Presidential address to review the history of the particular field and t(j) indicate its place in the economic structure of the country.I propose to follow this practice and to try and present to you a short picture of thÇ mineral industry as it has existed in Tasmania. None of the information is new it is available in diverse and remote geological reports and in publications such as Witham's Western Tasmania and the more recent Peaks of Lyell. The last composite approach was written twenty years ago by P. B. Nye and published as a Geological Survey Bulletin.I have enjoyed preparing this address because on occasion I find it refreshing to look back and see what was known and what was accomplished in the days when the going was a little tougher than it is now, and to speculate upon the reasons that drove men to do what they did. Simulation is increasingly being used to analyse mineral processing operations and explore efficiency options. Engineers that use simulation are rightly concerned with the quality and applicability of the underlying models. However, many of these models have a significant empirical component, and the best structure for this component may not be apparent. There is an opportunity to improve the quality and application range of these models by exploring potential structures for this empirical element. One approach to this problem is the use of structural optimisation, which is a formalisation of the model development process. This method searches through a family or hyper-structure of candidate models for a model that is optimal with respect to some measure of model quality. This method has been applied to the modelling of an industrial flotation circuit. The result was a model that was a significant improvement over a number of standard models reported in the literature. Structural optimisation provides a method to compare potential models in a systematic and efficient way, and hence to improve the structure of process models.

Discrete element modelling (DEM) is a research tool that involves numerically solving the equations of motion of large numbers of particles. It can be very useful for investigating mechanisms that can lead to bias when extracting samples from material as it is carried on a conveyor belt or as it falls from the end of a conveyor belt. DEM is more realistic than conceptual models and mathematical models; but it is not as realistic as physical experimentation. Its primary advantages over physical experimentation are that it is cheaper and that it allows many factors to be varied while keeping other factors unchanged.This paper reviews our investigations of the performance of sampling systems by using DEM. The sampling systems investigated include falling-stream cutters, cross-belt cutters, Vezins and a device called a ætrue-beltÆ cutter, which is being developed. In classical drill and blast underground mining methods, especially narrow vein operations economic quantities of broken ore can be left behind following normal mucking operations on the stope floors. The ore left behind can have significant economic value and if not collected can be lost forever. This paper reviews techniques for cleaning this material from stopes that have been used in the past and reviews possible modern techniques that can be applied to ensure this valuable material is removed from the stopes.

The procurement process for underground construction contracts, in particular those contacts involving tunnel boring machines (TBMs), is subject to many complex and inter-related variables, including national and local politics, public policy, community involvement and media attention û as well as strict environmental and legal requirements. Other restrictions include the time available to adequately investigate geotechnical conditions and viable technical options to determine the best construction methodologies û including selection of tunnel boring machine characteristics and, those construction means and methods suitable for the specific geotechnical and environmental conditions. The latter are, most often, quite imperfectly understood. æGetting it rightÆ implies that an optimal configuration û of machine type, characteristics and associated methodologies û can be found and successfully implemented for a particular project. æFrom the beginningÆ implies that the lack of time issue can be successfully resolved. Within an international context this paper highlights a number of issues of concern which relate to tunnel procurement systems and the ways in which certain key processes are managed during planning, design and construction. The authors argue that there is considerable room for improvement in the way tunnelling projects are undertaken and an approach is discussed which has the potential for substantial gains in cost and schedule and reduction of risk. Savings, however, may only be fully realised if the new methods can be fully implemented by all parties involved. This, we believe, will require the rejection of ætraditionalÆ forms of management and procurement with associated changes in the roles and responsibilities of owner, engineer and contractor. Additionally, risk identification, assessment and mitigation are essential cost and schedule control process which have, to this point, been underutilised by the underground construction industry.

Australia has an enviable global reputation as a leader in health and safety outcomes in the hazardous industry of mining, in part due to an increased application of risk management regarding operational planning and mining practice. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) initiated a major project, RISKGATE, to build, capture and deliver a national body of knowledge to assist companies with the management of risk in coal mining. The online system contains information for tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives underground, explosives open cut, manual tasks, slips/trips/falls, outbursts, coal bumps and bursts, human–machine interface, tailings dams, occupational hygiene and inrush. In 2014, RISKGATE is developing content for fitness for work (fatigue, drugs, alcohol, physical well-being, psychosocial well-being).This paper analyses underground mining fatalities in Australia and the United States since 2002 and introduces RISKGATE with a focus on the knowledge base for management of hazards in underground operations. Through capturing coal industry expert operational knowledge, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover within the mining industry. The Indonesian province of Papua is a remote jungle-clad region covering the western half of the mountainous island of New Guinea. Despite being relatively under-explored to this day,Papua is home to the greatest mineral success story of the 20th century. The Grasberg/Ertsberg minerals district atop the central dividing range contains the worldÆs largest reserve of both copper and gold (Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold, 2002). With large mines at Ok Tedi,Por gera and Lihir,and many well-delineated resources such as Frieda River,Wafi and Hidden Valley, neighbouring Papua New Guinea,the eastern half of New Guinea has enjoyed sustained exploration campaigns for gold and copper since the mid 1960s. The combined Grasberg and PNG exploration successes can be measured in terms of ounces of gold produced over the last decade versus available landmass,conf irming the island of New Guinea and surrounding islands as a world-class destination for gold explorers. Yet despite this obvious regional prospectivity and the profitability of the Grasberg operation, a sustained exploration effort in the Papua province in Indonesia has not been achieved. Periodic political constraints, poor infrastructure, high costs, operational challenges, social and environmental concerns and lack of immediate exploration success often impact exploration investment decisions. Accordingly a lesser number of mineral occurrences have been documented in Papua compared to those seen along tectonic strike in geologically similar Papua New Guinea.

Fragmentation modelling has been in use in the mining industry for a long time; however, there are still some aspects to tackle with regard to its use for strategic/planning and day-to-day purposes.On one hand, an important amount of resources are allocated to the task of calibrating and validating a good fragmentation model. Nonetheless, errors during the implementation stage introduce uncertainty into the prediction.On the other hand, it is common practice in the mining industry to use only discrete values to represent the fragmentation from blasting (k20, k50, k80), which provides a biased interpretation of the situation as, for instance, the best and worst possible cases are not taken into account. This is particularly critical when a continuous improvement philosophy has been adopted and modelling is used to either modify the drilling and blasting designs or plan ahead.It is well known that every site has particular conditions (rock mass, equipment, drilling and loading practices, among others) that often define unique trends in implementation. These trends can be captured using statistic and probabilistic techniques and then used as proxies for further analysis.This paper explores the potential of including implementation data in the form of probabilistic distributions into the Swebrec model to improve the performance of this engineering tool during the decision-making process.The fragmentation results of four designs were modelled using three different degrees of accuracy in the implementation for the burden, spacing and explosive column length.The data analysis showed that the probabilistic approach helps to achieve a broader perspective regarding the fragmentation that it is possible to obtain and the implications for the subsequent processes. The analysis also showed that the likelihood of producing similar fragmentation with different designs (involving different powder factors and costs associated) increases with the variability of the implementation.CITATION:Parra, H and Zenteno, D, 2015. For over 50 years R W Miller & Co Pty Ltd operated old coal properties abandoned by former owners as uneconomic, some of which dated back to the last century. The companyÆs ability to survive with what were relatively poor quality coal resources required a small efficient management organisation. In 1970 R W Miller was involved in negotiations with other coal companies through coal sales contracts to develop private coal areas under the provisions of the old Coal Mining Act (1906) and these efforts led to the development of Lemington colliery. At the same time development of the Ironbark colliery holding near Newcastle commenced. In 1971, R W Miller approached the New South Wales Government for a resource replacement area to prospect for coal in the Upper Hunter Valley. Authorisation No 33 was finally granted on 30 September 1975, but the company found the area was inaccessible as most of the surface was owned by the Australian Army. Later R W Miller was granted Authorisation 66 of 2167.5 hectares at Mount Thorley near Singleton on 1 November 1976. The development of this coal mining project coincided with the second OPEC oil crisis in 1978 and a short-term boom for coal resources and the unrealistic expectations generated by the boom. This paper gives a broad outline of the development of the Mount Thorley project between 1976 to 1986 including the feasibility study and the many governmental and industrial delays that resulted in a three-year time overrun in the project development period.

The concept of vertical pit mining has been developed as an alternative mining method for the exploitation from surface of small, vertical or near-vertical, massive orebodies down to depths of some 200 m, where ore extraction from conventional open pit excavations is rendered uneconomic due to high associated waste:ore mining ratio. Systematic lateral support maintains vertical pit sides, thereby minimising waste mining volumes. Stability analysis techniques have been developed for design of this lateral support, with the support quantum, primarily comprising long cable anchors, dependent upon country rock strength characteristics and pit configuration. Where the cost of support is less than the cost of the comparable conventional pit waste excavation, vertical pit mining becomes an economically viable alternative, additionally providing the benefit of reduced environmental impact and rehabilitation requirements for the mining area. The technique has been successfully applied for the mining of a chrome deposit in Zimbabwe to an 80 m depth, believed to be unique in the world, and a full feasibilty study for a 3000 m2 diamond pipe has been carried out for mining to 200 m depth.
