South Australia was founded as late as 1836, forty- eight years after New South Wales, yet within five years had announced the first discovery of metals in Australia. Throughout the 1840s the mining of silver-lead, then copper, spread north through the Mount Lofty and Flinders Ranges creating a thriving industry, years before the discovery of gold in the eastern colonies in 1851. The first significant mine was Kapunda (1842), followed by the much bigger Burra (1845) and other copper finds at Tungkillo, Worthing, Cal- lington, and North Rhine.

In hard rock mining, large-scale bulk mining methods such as block or panel caving (BC/PC) and sublevel caving (SLC) typically generate significant surface deformations such as subsidence. Surface deformations need to be considered in the project evaluation and planning stages of cave mines, for example, planning and location of critical underground mine planning infrastructure such as portals, haulage and vent shafts, access roads, or potential damage to existing infrastructure, changes to surface water management, waste dump, stockpile and tailings dam stability, and environmental impacts. Assessing the impact and risks associated with subsidence is a key component in robust mine planning and operations management.

The dynamic behaviour of the load in a pilot-scale ball mill has been measured as a function of axial position within the mill, end plate lifter design, load volume J (percent of mill volume), percent solids in the slurry S and mill speed N (percent of critical speed). Conductivity probes were inserted through the shell of the mill to provide online measurements of the dynamic orientation of the load in the mill. It was found that 1. the height of the shoulder of the load is increased by increasing J, S or N. 2. Measurements of the effect of S on the location of the shoulder of the load should be very useful in mill control strategies. 3. The axial centre of gravity of the load in the mill is not affected by operating conditions. 4. The presence of lifters on the feed end plate does not affect the torque drawn by the mill. 5. Holdup of slurry in the mill is a strong function of slurry viscosity and a weak function of mill speed.

Asian steel mills are demanding iron ore with specific chemical, mineralogical, metallurgical and environmental properties to warrant that the ore is of the greatest quality. As a result, a toolkit of analytical techniques becomes important. Hyperspectral analyses of iron ore cores and chips using a HyLogging™ system are now routinely undertaken by BHP Billiton Iron Ore in Western Australia for banded iron formation-hosted iron ores and channel iron deposits to better characterise their iron ores. Objective information can now be expanded by adding new sensors. The current HyLogging™ system provides point analysis reflectance spectra and a red–green–blue high-resolution image, while recent developments, such as hyperspectral imaging using the Corescan system, now provide full spectral image and surface topography. The addition of Raman spectroscopy provides the ability to detect and quantify quartz and magnetite (or maghemite) and cross validate hyperspectral information on hematite and goethite and aluminium substitution in the iron oxides. Micro-X-ray fluorescence mapping also adds chemical information appropriate for cross validation with the aforementioned methods. The majority of the powerplants in India are fed with non-coking coals, with the coals dispatched from their respective mines via wagons loaded by a rapid loading system or pay loader. The usual top size of coal is 200 mm and sampling is carried out manually from wagons. The manual method of wagon top sampling of large size raw coal is not only difficult, but also violates some of the fundamental principles of sampling. As per sampling requirements, samples are to be drawn from the full depth of the wagons, which is impossible to be done manually. Since the ash distribution in the different size fractions is not homogeneous, the results from the samples, which do not reflect the true size distribution of the lot, are likely to be biased. More importantly, sample collection by shovel from the top is a function of human discretion and not governed by the equiprobability rule. In another case, the sample has been collected by a cross belt-type auto mechanical sampler for 200 mm size coal at one of the super thermal power stations. Test analysis shows that coal collected using a cross belt-type mechanical sampler also has significant deviations from stopped belt coal samples of 200 mm size due to size segregation. Studies carried out on wagon top sampling through specially designed experiments reveal some interesting features. The presence of bias in wagon top sampling is apparent when compared with the ‘stopped belt’ sample. In this paper, a comparative study between manual wagon top sampling/auto mechanical sampling with respect to stopped belt sampling has been conducted for coal of size 200 mm. Several major routes connecting Northern and Southern Europe or Asia run through Austria. These highways have to surmount the alpine range which traverses Austria from west to east. In order to ensure safe driving conditions even in winter, tunnels, at times quite long ones, are necessary. Austria now has tunnels totalling 160 km in length. These tunnels are either already in use or just about completed. The Plabutsch tunnel near Graz will be one of the longest tunnels in the world: approximately 10 kilometers in length. It will be put into operation in the summer of 1987. Before construction could begin, soil and rock conditions had to be investigated by means of a test tunnel. Afterwards, excavation was begun to the full 100 m' cross section. The new Austrian tunnelling method with conventional blasting was used for the major part of the tunnel. It was necessary to have such a large tunnel cross section because a fully transverse ventilation system is installed for environmental reasons. In order to avoid air pollution from the tunnel, exhaust fumes are not allowed to escape from the tunnel portals but from two shafts, each with a diameter of 8.5 m. In this way, exhaust fumes must rise 90 meters or 240 meters before they reach the open air and will thus not affect the city. The ventilation system influences the size of the excavation, and especially the size of the ventilation caverns and the air shafts. All these factors directly influence construction and maintenance costs, and an economical optimisation leads to the appropriate dimensions for the excavation.

When a coalmine fire occurs, it is crucial to judge the developing trends inside the fire area by analysing the changes of gas concentration in order to formulate the proper rescue measures. At present, few researchers have focused on the relationship between the changing trend of gas product and basic characteristics of fire in the coal fire extinguishing process. To study the relationship of basic characteristics of coalmine fire during the extinguishing process, an experimental platform for coal combustion in a confined space was built, and gas production, flame image and coal temperature during the extinguishing process were monitored and analysed by an online continuous gas analysis instrument, camera and thermocouple. Research shows that during the burning phase of the coal sample in the confined space, the flame zone decreases gradually due to insufficient gas supply. The size of the flame zone fluctuates and shares a positive correlation with CO concentration, while sharing a negative correlation with O2 and CO2 concentrations. Then, in the extinguishing phase, the increasing rate of CO2 concentration and the decreasing rate of O2 concentration both decrease gradually, but CO concentration would rise for a period before it eventually decreases. The main reason for the underutilisation of steelmaking slags is their instability, which is influenced by their complex phase structure. Recycling and sustainable steelmaking slag face challenges due to the presence of magnesium oxide (MgO), a crucial component in steelmaking slag. This study investigates the phase evolution of steelmaking slag during the cooling process with different MgO contents, using high-temperature experiments and FactSage™ software, ver 8.1, (by Thermfact/CRCT and GTT-Technologies) thermodynamic equilibrium calculations. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope - energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analyses identified main phases in steelmaking slag, including Ca2SiO4 (C2S), RO (MgO-FeO solid solution), Ca2Fe2O5 (C2F), and Ca3SiO5 (C3S). The study reveals that RO phase increases as the MgO content increases. C3S precipitates from steelmaking slag with a 12 mass per cent MgO content at a reduced temperature of 1400°C. It is important to note that C3S remains in the steelmaking slag even after slow cooling. This may be due to the substitution of Ca2+ in C3S by Fe2+ and Mg2+ ions. Intriguingly, the precipitation of f-CaO in steelmaking slag with 10 mass per cent of MgO content occurred after one year, while there was no manifestation of f-CaO precipitation in the steelmaking slag with 12 mass per cent of MgO content even after one year. This discrepancy suggests a potential stabilising effect of an appropriate amount of MgO in steelmaking slag. However, it is crucial to emphasise that this inference lacks supporting data, necessitating further research to validate this hypothesis. The significance of this work is in uncovering the complexities of steelmaking slag behaviour, providing essential insights for optimising recycling processes. The research sheds light on the factors that influence the phase composition and stability of steelmaking slag, contributing to the utilisation of steelmaking slags, promoting environmental sustainability, and enhancing the overall efficiency of metallurgical processes in the current industrial landscape.

Gold at the Harbour Lights Mine (HLM), WA occurs principally in pyrite (Py) and arsenopyrite (AsPy) minerals rendering it inaccessible to direct cyanidation. Froth flotation produces a concentrate with low mass recovery and with high recoveries of sulfides. After investigating several alternatives, a novel flotation process has been developed to separate the concentrate into pyrite and arsenopyrite rich fractions. The pyrite fraction is finely ground and cyanide leached, while the arsenopyrite is treated off-site. This paper describes the separation process from laboratory bench scale through to commercial operation at the HLM gold plant.

Paste backfill has been adopted by many underground mines in North America and a growing number elsewhere. Paste offers a number of advantages. This paper suggests wider applications of paste technology to surface tailings disposal and water management. Advantages include improved overall stability, potentially easier permitting, smaller water inventory and earlier reclamation. It may be feasible to use the same plant to prepare backfill and to dispose of surplus tailings. Example cost models are given to illustrate potential applications.

Highwall failures in surface coal mines in Queensland occur as circular slips through weak and weathered material, or as bilinear slides on sub-horizontal surfaces and steeply dipping joints. Weak horizontal planes occur in the Permian-Tertiary unconformity or on bedding surfaces within the Permian Coal Measures. Sub-vertical movements occur along rock joints and tension cracks induced by stress relaxation after excavation. Blasting also introduces new fractures and causes movement along existing rock discontinuities. Critical factors for stability include the dip direction of potential failure surfaces, shear strength of the rocks, damage due to blasting prior to highwall excavation, groundwater conditions, the type and performance of clays on shear surfaces, and pit geometry.

Longhole open stoping was introduced in the zinc-rich 'B' lode at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) during 1968. Since then one longitud- inal and a series of transverse longhole open stopes have been developed. The longholes are drilled using Gardner Denver airtrac drilling jumbos and the broken ore is loaded from drawpoints and transported to chutes using Wagner ST5 scoop- trams. The holes were drilled from sill stopes 160 ft apart. The width of an emptied transverse longhole stope was successfully widened by blasting rings of blastholes drilled parallel to the stope wall. Proposed stope and pillar designs for a series of transverse longhole open stopes were assessed using a method of finite element analysis, applied to a longitudinal section through the area. Blastholes have been surveyed for dip and bearing using an Eastman borehole survey camera. The data produced has provided the basis of a study of blast- hole deviation. Deviation of boreholes is considered to be the major cause of the formation of benches in longhole stopes.

Sungun Copper Mine, which is the second largest copper mining operation in Iran has a large tailings storage facility with a seepage control dam located downstream of the main dam. Surface and groundwater in surrounding area of the tailings storage facility has been monitored for ten years. This paper will discuss the results of the surface and groundwater monitoring and seepage control at the Sungun Copper Mine. Seismic tomographic imaging has been applied to determine the blast induced damage zones in bauxite pillars in underground mining. At the retreating stage, when pillar dimensions are reduced from 8 x 8 m to approximately 5 x 5 m, the' seismic tomographies reveal, through measurements of the P-wave velocities which is a measure of the degree of fracturation of the pillar rock mass, the presence of three zones within each pillar. In the external zone, where velocities recorded are below 750 m/s. extensive pillar damage occurs which is attributed to both the growth and coalescence of pre-existing cracks and even the creation of new cracks in the rock mass. This effect is in agreement with literature, when considering the peak particle velocity as a criterion for rock failure in tunnels. In the intermediate zone, where velocities range between 7S0-1000 m/s, damage to a much lesser extent occurs which is due mostly to growth of pre-existing cracks and widening of their apertures. The inner zone, where velocities exceed 1000 m/s, is considered to be unaffected by blasting. Simple remedial measures of low cost, which are based on blasting mechanics are proposed to minimise the blast induced damage zone and consequently the transition zone.

Sizing is fundamental technology for each step of ironmaking process. The progress of sizing technology has greatly contributed to the development of ironmaking technology. As the purposes of ironmaking operations diversified particularly since the oil crisis of 1973, the sizing technology made new advance- ment, as represented by pulverization of ser- pentine, dezincification and classification of secondary blast furnace dust, pulverized coal injection, size-segregated sinter charging and a coal preparation control process. These techniques are mostly characterized by the fine grinding of a given type of mineral or coal to heighten the degree of reaction con- trol. This trend is expected to continue Further.

The possibility of using an acidic autogenous hydrogen direct reduced iron (H-DRI) slag as a basis for vanadium extraction is investigated. For a raw material to be suitable for producing high-quality FeV, the vanadium oxide content should be sufficiently high and the phosphorus oxide content in a tolerable range. Therefore, the feasibility for vanadium extraction relies on fulfilling two demands: the predominate partitioning of phosphorus to the metal and vanadium to the slag. Correspondingly, the behaviours of phosphorus and vanadium in the Al2O3-SiO2-FeOx-VyOz-P2O5-Fe system were studied experimentally. Slag, 10 g, was put in contact with liquid iron, 30 g, for different durations (2–24 hrs) in closed alumina crucibles at 1873 K. The slag composition was varied between 33.1– 49.3 wt per cent Al2O3, 27.1–46.7 wt per cent SiO2, 16.6–30.1 wt per cent FeOx, and 2.5– 8.8 wt per cent V2O3. The equilibrium phosphorus distribution was 0.42, while the vanadium distribution ranged from 7.6 to 43.4, increasing with the Al2O3- and the FeOx-content.

Blasting operations play a pivotal role in the overall economics of opencast mines. The blasting subsystem affects all the other associated subsystems, ie loading, transport, crushing and milling operations. Fragmentation control through effective blast design and its effect on productivity is a challenging job for the practicing blasting engineer due to inadequate knowledge of actual explosive energy released in the borehole, effect of varying initiation practice in blast design and its effect on explosive energy release characteristic. This paper describes the result of a systematic study on the impact of blast design parameters on rock fragmentation at two mines in India. Both the mines use draglines and shovel-dumper combination for removal of overburden. Despite its pivotal role in controlling the overall economics of a mining operation, the expected blasting performance is often judged almost exclusively on the basis of poorly defined parameters such as powder factor and is often qualitative, which results in a very subjective assessment of blasting performance. Such an approach is a very poor substitute for accurate assessment of explosive and blasting performance. Forty-seven blasts were conducted with varying blast designs and charging patterns and their impact on the rock fragmentation are documented. A high-speed camera was deployed to record the detonation sequences of the blasts. The Rosebery Mine on the west coast of Tasmania is a world class polymetallic base metal deposit, containing six major minerals: galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, gold, silver and pyrite. This resource has been exploited for nearly a century, yet a reliable estimate of the reserve continues to present a challenge.Over the past twenty years, the operation has changed from relatively low productivity cut and fill timber-support scraper mining, to higher productivity bulk mechanised open stoping. At the same time, economic constraints have changed and grades have fallen, which have increased the pressure to refine the resource/reserve estimating processes. This paper compares the restrictions of the polygonal section method of the past with the advantages of a kriged block model. The limitations of Mine Call Factors, the problems involved in converting decades of diamond drilling data on paper into a computer data base, and the effect of this new methodology at Rosebery, are described.
