Delivered at the University of Sydney, on June 4th, 1954.THE TORCH WE HOLDLast year Our Institute celebrated its Diamond Jubilee, coincident with the holding of the Fifth Empire Mining and Metallurigcal Congress in Australia and New Zealand. We can be proud of our growth over the 61 years since the inaugural meeting in Adelaide in April, 1893, which followed suggestions from a provisional committee of mining men, formed in 1892 in Broken Hill.We can also be proud of our technical achievements in the fields of economic geology, mining and metallurgy.Should we be content with the growth of our mining and metallurgical industries over these years? My answer is in the negative. The discovery of new mineral deposits is essential for the continuance and development of the industries we represent.Let me review the background and trends of our industry in an attempt to emphasise the changing factors influencing the search for minerals and their exploitation.Australia was blessed with the discovery of coal in New South Wales in 1796; copper in South Australia at Kapunda, Burra, Wallaroo and Moonta in the eighteen-forties; gold in Victoria and Eastern Australia in the 'fifties; tin at Mount Bischoff, Tasmania, and gold at Charters Towers, Queensland, in the 'seventies; lead-silver at Broken Hill, New South Wales; gold and copper at Mount Morgan, Queensland, and copper at Mount Lyell, Tasmania, in the 'eighties; and gold at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and zinc-lead atRosebery, Tasmania, in the 'nineties. The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources is reviewed. In heavlly-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations. By contrast in arid areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

The richer, shallower sapphire deposits of the New England region of New South Wales which have been traditionally mined by the small miner are almost worked out. Larger mining and exploration companies are replacing the small miner and exploring for the primary source of sapphire or lower grade alluvial deposits.   Although in recent years considerable exploration effort has been directed at locating the primary source, commercial exploitation of sapphire is still restricted to the working of alluvial deposits.   If the Australian industry is to compete against Asian and African producers it must use cost effective exploration, mining) processing and marketing methods.

Waitemata Tectonic Event(25 Ma ago) created a subduction system from the northeast of Northland, causing: (1) the emplacement of the Northland Allochthon (24-23 Ma) which provided argillaceous limestone and serpentine to Northland, and minor copper to both there and East Cape (located off Northland then); and (2) Northland volcanism (from 22 Ma), which lacked economic mineralisation. The Kiwitahi Tectonic Event (1714 Ma) caused: (1) a realignment of volcanism - from coastal western Northland, to west of the Hauraki Plains (Kiwitahi); (2) a start to the migration southwards from Northland of (a) the Alpine Fault System towards Marlborough today, (b) subduction towards Cook Strait, and (c) volcanism towards Taranaki-to-Bay of Plenty (initially through Coromandel, Kiwitahi, and offshore west coast); and (3) a start to rhyolitic volcanism & associated hydrothermal activity. The latter caused epithermal mineralisation, providing in Coromandel the best known North Island metalliferous deposits. Andesitic volcanism has been active in both of these two contrasting, subequal belts since 22 Ma. Rhyolitic volcanism and hydrothermal activity was wholly restricted to the eastern Marshall Belt, with an abrupt limit to economic mineralisation at the Volcanic Divide (within Hauraki Plains) and a major change there to basaltic volcanism of the western Searle Belt. The Kaimai Tectonic Event (5-1.5 Ma) caused: (1) a temporary reversal in volcanic migration in the Searle Belt, and a duplication of rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity at Waihi (Marshall Belt); (2) the rotational rifting of both the Central Volcanic Region (by 30¦) and the Hauraki Rift (10¦), causing major curvature of the North Island and New Zealand, and the transfer of the offshore subduction system from Coromandel to East Coast; and (3) an effective end to Coromandel mineralisation. Post-Kaimai Volcanism (1.5-0 Ma) included: (1) andesitic volcanism in the Searle Belt, yielding the western coastal titanomagnetite deposits; and (2) andesitic, and rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity in the Marshall Belt - the latter providing geothermal energy, sulphur, and pumice/perlite deposits. Post-Subduction (Intraplate) Volcanism (10-0 Ma) developed in a steadily expanding northwest region of relative tectonic quiescence, as subduction and its volcanism migrated southwards. Intraplate volcanism was predominantly basaltic, providing excellent aggregate; but less common rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity provided geothermal potential and mercury at Ngawha and at Puhipuhi, and halloysitic clays of extreme brightness elsewhere in Northland. This volcanism has reached as far SE as Mayor Island, providing an early New Zealand mineral resource - obsidian.

The treatment of a hydrobiotite containing 0·64 per cent copper with various soluHons showed that a high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of the copper can be extracted under mild conditions (1 M BCI, 85°C) or withsaline solutions (20 per cent by weight NaCI or NH4F, 400°C). The latter results suggest that the copper is incorporated in the interstratified vermiculite of a vermicuHte-biotite mica and the solutions (NaCl and NH4F) which reacted with the vermiculite without attacking the biotite gave the highest extraction yields.In general, extraction yields with saline solutions increased with the temperature (between 100 and 400°C) and duration (3 or 6 days) of the treatment but were not appreciably affected by the initial pH of solutions.The results of RCI treatment especially may have a bearing on the hydrometallurgical treatment of refractory copper ores where copper is tied to gangue silicates.

Uranium exploration over a wide area of the Southern Frame Embayment, South Australia, has defined a number of Lower Tertiary fluvial palaeochannels incised in older rocks. The buried channels contain similar stratigraphicsequences of interbedded sand, silt, and clay, probably derived from the adjacent uranium-rich Olarv Provinee. Uranium mineralization is pervasive within two major palaeochannels, and four small uranium deposits have been found in the basal sands of these channel sequences, at the margins of extensive tongues of limonitic sand.One of the channels is examined in detail with respect to channel morphology, stratigraphy, and rock alteration and the geology and ore controls of the contained uranium deposits are described.A geochemical zonation reflected by variation in limonite, pyrite, carbon, and humic malleI' is defined across one of the deposits. A genetic model is proposed suggesting formation by a uraniferous geochemical cell which migrated down the stream gradient and concentrated uranium on its lateral margins adjacent to the channel bank.

To form a true picture of the early history of Queensland, we must think of white settlement advancing like an incoming tide, wave by wave; each wave lapping ahead a little further than the last. The credit for opening up the country belongs to a large number of pioneers, each of whom pushed out just a little further than his predecessors.Contrary to what one might expect, Rockhampton district was settled by overlanders from the south and not from the ocean side. When the Archers, the pioneers of the Rockhampton district, reached Gracemere in 1853, settlement had already made its way down the valley of the Dawson River; for it was from Leith Hay's station at Rannes (a few miles below Mount Morgan) that the Archers advanced northward into the unknown, to find the river that the explorer, Ludwig Leichhardt, had told them must enter the sea somewhere near the Tropic of Capricorn.The Archers travelled northward from Rannes up the valley of the Dee, coming out on the edge of the Razorback Range not very far from the point at which the Dawson Valley Highway drops over into Poison Creek. (Their diary records the bearings from a lookout point to various peaks around Rockhampton, and to-day, by plotting back from these peaks, we can determine the exact spot at which they descended on to the Fitzroy Flats.) We can be certain, then, that they must have been the first white men to set eyes on Mount Morgan; though to them it would have seemed to be nothing more than an insignificant hill...

In the course of an integrated airborne survey in 1975, a uranium-molybdenum deposit was discovered by Minatome Australia Pty Limited in North Queensland, Australia, approximately 70 km by road west of Townsville.The mineralization occurs in a welded tuff unit within the Carboniferous St James Vokanics. It is structurally controlled by a complex of subvertical east-west fractures and is exposed over a strike length of 350 m. Drilling has traced a further 150 m extension underneath a barren capping consisting of a thick pile of vokano-sediments. The maximum width of the orebody is 150 m, and its vertical thickness is approximately 100 m.The primary ore minerals are coffinite, pitchblende and molybdenite, accompanied by various alteration products (particularly uranium molybdates).The vein-type mineralization is considered epigenetic.A comprehensive program of surface drilling and underground exploration is in progress to establish the uranium and molybdenum reserves.

Block caving is becoming a more widely adopted mining method allowing for underground massive low grade orebodies to be extracted economically. Underbreak during cave propagation is difficult to predict in terms of recovery and is not well-researched due to the small number of caving operations. During mining of E26 Lift 2 (E26L2) block cave at CMOC Northparkes Mines, a wedge of high grade material failed to cave, even with the assistance of preconditioning and subsequent attempts to induce caving. The ultimate solution for recovery of the uncaved wedge was the establishment of the E26 sublevel cave (SLC), which commenced mining in 2015, with production following in 2016. The SLC provides approximately 1Mtpa to supplement the lowering grade of the current E48 block cave feed. Applying the sublevel caving methodology to recover block cave underbreak has proven challenging. The impact of the caving stresses and preconditioning of the wedge have caused production limitations requiring continual remediation throughout production of the E26 SLC. The dependence on remediation work created a roadblock to implementing precharging as the prevalence of brow loss raised concerns over the inability to hook up the charged ring. In 2018, a wireless initiation trial was completed in the E26 SLC over 24 rings. The trial showed that precharging was achievable in this environment and greatly improved the safety of charge up personnel.

Very little has been written about the discovery and early history of prospecting of ironstone deposits in the Iron Knob-Middleback Range area of South Australia, the main source of supply of ironstone (hematite) for the Australian steel industry, and scanty though the record is, much of it is wrong or misleading.With the help of several people, to whom acknowledgement is made at the end of the paper, the writer has unravelled some of the story, but not the whole story. It is hoped that publication of this paper will stimulate interest in others, who may be able to supplement this account from family records, from the files of newspapers, or from archives.

Coal augering is an ideal method for recovering coal from the highwalls of open cut coalmines. Coal augering is a simple process whereby additional flights are added to the auger cutting head and auger holes are drilled at 1.9 m diameter up to 200 metres deep. Traditional monitoring was located at the mouth of the hole and if methane was encountered above two per cent, inert gas was delivered into the mouth of the hole to deplete the oxygen content at the auger cutting head below 12 per cent. The auger operator was asked the question ‘how do you know that this is the case?’ Trials were undertaken to prove that the oxygen content at the cutting head did drop below 12 per cent (the lowest limit for methane to ignite, also known as the oxygen nose point). Initial trials showed that the oxygen content in the mouth of the hole did not drop below 12 per cent and modifications were made to hold the inert gases in the mouth of the hole so that the auger flights could take this inert gas into the hole. In-hole monitoring, after completion of mining and after extracting the auger flights, showed that the atmosphere quickly returned to fresh air. In-hole monitoring was also tried during the augering process and yielded valuable results. This paper will discuss the results of the monitoring, information on the gas results obtained and the methodologies used to optimise the oxygen content at the auger face.CITATION:Watkinson, M and Leisemann, B, 2017. The distribution or the userul minerals or Tasmania is so closely connected with the geological structure of the island that it will be convenient to briefly recapitulate the principal ract or its geological history, before describing the ore and other deposits. In many cases these present features which are very puzzling in the absence of knowledge of the structure of the districts in which they are found and in all cases it is of benefit to mining engineers to be acquainted with the main facts of the geological·history of the regions in which they have to carry on operations. Moreover, in speculating as to the origin of lodes and other deposits, we have constantly to rerer to the crumplings or the earth's crust by mountain-making movements, and to the igneous rocks which have been thrust throngh the other strata, to explain the origin or the lode fissures, and this discussion cannot be carried on without knowledge of local geology.The oldest rock yet met with in Tasmania are of Archooan age, and consist of highly crystalline quartzites and micaceous schist. They are most extensively developed towards the western side ot the island, forming a belt parallel to the West Coast from South-West Cape to Cradle fountain; but they also crop out here and there to the west and northward of this belt, where the covering strata or later age have been denuded away. Though not seen in situ in the eastern part of the colony, the abundance or pebbles derived from this formation in the conglomerates of the coal measures shows that it must in those day have formed land surfaces there also, and makes it likely that the archooan strata exist at no great depth: below many of the beds of later age now occupying the surface. Lying unconfortably upon these highly metamorphic strata we find next an extensive series of subcrystalline metamorphic conglomerates, grits, sandstones, slates, and limestones,of Cambro-Silurian age. These are well seen in the Gordou River Basin, along the West Coast Range, aloug the North Coast, and in the goldfields of the north-eastern portion of the colony. They are much broken by later intrusive rocks, and covered by younger rormations, but the series is spread more or less over the whole island.

X-ray diffraction techniques are commonly used in the identification and quantification of fine-grained materials. A relationship exists between the size of crystals in a sample and the degree to which they diffract X-rays. The Scherrer equation relates the broadness of diffraction peaks to the size of crystals responsible for diffraction (Klug and Alexander, 1974). Relatively large crystals of the order of I - 10 ¦m strongly diffract X-rays; the diffractogram of such crystals exhibit narrow intense peaks. As the size of the crystals in a sample is reduced, diffraction peaks become broader and less intense. Crystals less than 10 nm generally exhibit broad, diffuse and low intensity peaks. Some material is so fine-grained and poorly-diffracting that X-ray patterns show very little information in a normal one-hour scan thereby necessitating very long acquisition times of up to 12 hours. The term poorly-diffracting material (PDM) was coined for such material found within the bauxite deposit of Weipa, northern Queensland (Tilley and Eggleton, 1994; 1996). Common regolith minerals such as hematite, goethite and layer silicate clays are quite commonly fine enough to possess a poorly-diffracting character. Noncrystalline and poorly crystalline Fe-Si-Al-oxyhydroxides such as allophane, opal, ferrihydrite and hisingerite, have either a nondiffracting (amorphous) or poorly-diffracting nature (Eggleton, 1987).

The Ediacara mineral field is classified as a Mississippi Valley type deposit with stratiform mineralization near the base of the Cambrian beds. Mineral deposition was contemporaneous with sedmentation and reerystallization, and mobilization took place after lithification of the sediments. Several mechanisms of deposition were possible.INTRODUCTIONThe Ediacara mineral field is located in the Mt. James Range approximately 300 miles north of Adelaide, about 12 miles west of Beltana railway siding and 10 miles east of Lake Torrens. It is isolated geographically from similar deposits of equivalent age and environment in the Flinders Range Province (Fig. 1). The climate may be described as semi arid with high summer temperatures and frequent dust storms. Occasional thunder storms are the main source of rain in the summer months.The exact date of discovery is unknown, but is believed to be about middle of the last century. Ulrich (1872) was the first geologist to report on the field. At that time only the southern portion of the field had been prospected (and abandoned). Although the prospects did not appear encouraging Ulrich advised prospecting of the shales and testing beneath the limestone.In 1888, Rosewarne, an Inspector of Mines, visited the Southern Workings and queried whether they were connected with some lode at deeper level or were merely bedded deposits. The first geological map with sections was drawn by H.Y.L. Brown (Brown 1892).Brown recognized three principal rock formations as dolomitic sandstone, kaolinised shales and sandstone, and quartzites and sandstone in descending order. The El Pe±on gold-silver deposit comprises four epithermal, low-sulfidation veins, which contain 2.9 million oz Au and 48 million oz Ag. Provisional data on alteration mineralogy, fluid inclusions, and vein textures constrain the chemistry and hydrology of the hydrothermal system responsible for ore mineralisation at El Pe±on. Alteration minerals include quartz, adularia, albite, illite, smectite, calcite, chlorite, and pyrite. Alteration minerals suggest the existence of near neutral pH, low salinity hydrothermal fluids, which circulated over an area greater than 18 km2. Complex mineral zonation patterns result from variations in host rock permeability and composition, overprinting alteration possibly produced by thermal waters from surficial and peripheral parts of the hydrothermal system, and supergene weathering in the hyperarid environment. WHEN making comparisons of the efficiencies of different grinding and crushing machines it is desirable to be able to estimate the work actually done in crushing the ore from a given size of feed to a given size of product, the screen analysis of both feed and product being determined. Messrs. Klug and Taylor, in a paper on this subject, published in the monthly journal of the Chamber of Mines of WA, 31st January, 1906, have described a method adopted by them in calculations made in connection with a series of trials of grinding pans. Their methOd is based upon the assumption that if a quantity Q of material consisting of particles of average diameter x be crushed down until the average diameter of the particles is y, then the work done in grinding is proportional to Q x. There is no theoretical basis for this assumption that the writer is aware of, and it does not appear to satisfy the fundamental conditions necessary. If the material be further crushed until the diameter 2 becomes Z, the additional work done is measured. The work done in crushing from diameter x to diameter Z in one operation is proportional to Q x:, and therefore we ought to have zx2 y2 x2 Q-+Q-=Q-. y2 Z2 Z2But these expressions are not in general equal to one another. The removal of rock blockages in mining operations has long been a risky undertaking, especially in high overhead conditions. Moreover, the assessment of where to put charges and the placement of them has been difficult due to the lack of visibility and safe access to the area. Traditionally, wedging long poles with explosives on them to keep the operator at a relatively safe distance has been the tried and true method of attempting to remove the blockages. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect system as it usually takes several attempts to remove the blockage. Each successive attempt results in even more dangerous conditions for workers and/or damage to the mine due to the successively larger amounts of explosives used until the hang-up finally comes down.Over the years, different ideas have been proposed to improve this process and reduce the inherent safety risks. Some of the technologies that have been trialled include projectiles fired at the hang-up; large, cumbersome arms; and massive amounts of explosives, each of which come with their own inherent safety risks that result in dangerous situations for miners and the mine.After gaining a thorough understanding of the process, Penguin Automated Systems Inc has developed a robotic system that is capable of working in a rock blockage safely. The idea combines the latest in telerobotics technology with 3D scanning and underground geospatial positioning. The hang-up removal is performed by scanning the inside of the hang-up to rapidly develop a geospatially placed 3D model for the operator to use. The 3D model is detailed enough that the operator can attempt to pick the ‘keystone’. A blasting engineer or the operator can then determine the exact position where the explosive charge should be placed in the 3D model and thus at the actual hang-up. The operator, controlling the robotic arm, uses the 3D virtual reality model of the robot system and the actual drawpoint information model to display the location information, the arm can then reach into the hang-up to position the charge using the kinematic model of the robot system. The 3D model is used to provide views inside the hang-up so that the operator can move the arm safely and precisely. This process allows the operator to place the charge (using the 3D representation of the drawpoint) from a long distance away. As the process continues, the end of the arm drills the rock and precisely loads the explosives. The robot then returns the blasting cable to the command station, which is located in a truck at a safe distance from the blockage.This paper will review the development of the system and present the results to date.CITATION:Baiden, G, 2016.
