The Omineca Belt of the Canadian Cordillera straddles the western boundary of the North American paleocontinental margin and accreted oceanic and island arc terranes. Crustal thickening of the orogenic belt was initiated in the Jurassic and culminated in latest Cretaceous and Paleocene times.Thin-skinned shortening of the Rocky Mountain Foreland Thrust and Fold Belt was balanced by basement-involved crustal imbrication within the Omineca (hinterland) Belt. Middle and upper crustal rocks of the hinterland (Selkirk allochthon) were thrust eastward and ramped onto basement of the North American continental margin. By latest Paleocene the southern Omineca Belt formed an elevated crustal welt that was at least 60 km thick.Within less than 3 Ma of the culmination of crustal thickening the belt was rapidly uplifted and tectonically denuded. The southern Omineca Belt was extended by as much as 80% as upper crustal rocks were displaced on moderate to low angle normal sense shear zones and brittle normal faults. This oro-genic collapse is interpreted to be a gravitational response to crustal thickening and thermal soft-ening, facilitated by reduction in plate-boundary-induced far field stresses.

The Bottle Creek mine, when opened next month, will consist of three open cuts, Emu, VB and Boags, feeding ore to a central mill. The open cuts cover a strike length of 4.5 kilometres which forms part of a linear structure, which can be traced geochemically for 26.0 kilometres. With the exception of a few small gossanous outcrops at Emu, the deposits are completely covered with insitu laterite and alluvial overburden. Since its discovery in 1984, the deposit has been subjected to three major reverse circulation (RC) drilling programmes which have successively closed up the drill spacing on the main mineralized zone to 25m horizontally and less than 25m vertically. All resource calculations have been based primarily on samples of RC drill cuttings from these programmes. Ore reserve calculations have been completed after each drilling phase. They began with a simple polygonal technique, progressed through two sectional half-distance calculations and are now being completed with a 3-D geostatistical technique. Because of the style of mineralization, Norgold personnel paid particular attention to assessing the variability of the mineralization by using repeat samples, repeat analysis and diamond drill vs RC comparisons. In addition, close attention has been paid to obtaining an accurate estimate of the global SG of the ore bodies. Particular care has been taken to obtain complete drill intersections of the orebody and to maximize wet sample recoveries. Extensive re-sampling and re-analysis of samples has confirmed that Bottle Creek is unusual for an oxidized gold deposit in that all the gold appears to be very fine grained, and evenly distributed within the mineralized zone.

Backfill is usually considered a necessary evil that contributes little to the principal objective of the operation, ore production. Consequently, it is relegated to an auxiliary role in the operation with minimal equipment and resource allocation in planning and is only superficially considered during feasibility studies. In many mines, the inadequacy of the design and operation of the backfill system ultimately leads to frequent delays, excessive costs and, in the worst cases, major instabilities which result in reduced ore production and lost or unrecoverable ore reserves. The primary objective of backfill is to prevent the progressive deterioration of mined out excavations. With the exception of narrow vein operations, it is too weak to alter the mining induced stress regime and control stress concentrations caused by stope extractions. However, the direct benefits of backfill include the possibility to consider a wider range of mining methods, recovery of 100 per cent of the planned resource and the selection of a stoping sequence that minimises the regional stability problems that cause production shortfalls in the later years of mine production. Indirectly, backfill is a practical means of solving other issues, such as waste disposal, that impact the viability of mining. In Australia, the geotechnical conditions of many mines are becoming more difficult and increased attention to the importance of backfill is warranted. This paper describes realistic aspects of backfilling and the positive impacts a well co-ordinated fill system can have on mining activities as a whole. Examples are presented where an integrated approach to backfill systems have offered significant benefits to the operation.

Since 1962, ferro alloy production in Australia has been concentrated at Bell Bay, Tasmania with a major expansion occurring in 1976. This concentration was based originally on the perceived requirements of the expanding Australian steel industry, but recent stagnation within this industry has seen Temco become progressively more export oriented.In 1984, approval was given for a $47 million uprating of facilities which will allow for the introduction of the latest technology to ensure high quality, low cost production in a highly competitive export market.

In this paper is given a description of the flotation plant recently erected by Broken Hill South Limited at the South Mine, Broken Hill, N.S.W. It has been built on the site of the old flotation plant, which was described in a previous paper published by the author. The present paper is supplementary to the former paper in that it replaced the following sections thereof, namely, those from end of the second paragraph, page 269, to the end of the first paragraph page 282, and from the end of the second paragraph, page 284, to the end of the third paragraph, page 302.The roll crushing, fine grinding, gravity concentration, filtration, disposal of products and sampling in the new plant are the same as described in the above mentioned paper.The reconstruction of the flotation section, described herein, completes the reconstruction and modernisation of the treatment plant which was begun in 1928. A description of these earlier alterations has already been published in the Proceedings of this Institute.

Underground space can be defined as space below natural ground level which can be used as an alternative to an above ground location. While many of our above ground structures inherently involve underground excavation for foundations and services, the term underground space specifically refers to organised development of underground openings and of the underground domain. For example, the services to a city such as power, gas, sewerage, water and communications are installed in a congested array which usually requires roads to be dug up when the services need to be accessed. An underground space installation of services would involve a well planned conduit which is easily accessed without any excavation. The concept of using this virtually untapped land resource to the advantage of our expanding cities is gaining considerable interest in Australia. Overseas, in the Scandinavian countries and some Asian countries, underground space has been used for centuries; in Great Britain, France and the United States of America over the last century and in Japan for over a decade. This paper focusses on the types of underground space usage which should be competitive with above ground use and suggests areas in which the competitive edge may be improved in favour of underground space. In particular, considerable advantage is seen by using well-planned underground space developments in major cities, where the strategic central location of the development takes advantage of proximity to potential users. However, the largest single factor affecting the acceptance of underground space is the high capital cost of construction, even though an underground space development may result in lower operating costs and reduced long-term maintenance costs. While excavation methods and associated costs are very much site-specific, the importance of applying the latest technology in rock breakage, with consideration of ground vibration, excavation rates and ground support, remains a major challenge to the development of underground space.

Frequency of reports on premature failure of rock bolts and cable bolts have increased in past two decades. Such a failure threatens both the safety of underground mine workers and the economic viability of the operations. Herein, we report on analysis of rock bolts and cable bolts failed recently in three underground mines in Australia. Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques were used to study the failed bolts. MPI showed a number of subcritical cracks on the surface of the bolts. The majority of the cracks in both cable bolts and rock bolts were initiated from the base of ribs (indentation) where the stress concentration was high. SEM examinations showed tearing topography surface (TTS) in all failed rock bolts and cable bolts. These indicated that the failure occurred through hydrogen assisted stress corrosion cracking (HISCC). In February 1995, Falconbridge Limited approved the construction of a nickel mining and milling facility on its Raglan property situated in the Nunavik region of northern Quebec, Canada. The construction period successfully terminated with the commissioning and start-up of the plant and concentrator in early-December 1997. The estimated life of the project is 20 years with an annual mining rate of 800 000 tonnes of ore, producing 21 000 tonnes of nickel per year. This paper discusses the subject of æRemote Mining in the Canadian ArcticÆ as it applies to the Raglan mine process and people. During the feasibility stage of the project, many assumptions were made which influenced the design and operating parameters of the facilities and the equipment. Transportation, communication, remote logistics techniques and standard industry practices required to support a æfly-in/fly-outÆ operation were reviewed and either adopted or rejected for use at Raglan. These assumptions were æmade to fitÆ the uniqueness of our planned operation. It was also acknowledged that many of them would ultimately impact on the people required to staff the operation following construction. Therefore, their suitability and applicability were examined from an economic, operational and human perspective. In a continuing effort to improve the quality of life for Raglan employees, as well as the economics of our mine operations, these assumptions are under constant review and scrutiny. There is no doubt that experiences gained, and willingly shared by other North American arctic mining operations, proved invaluable and are a big reason for RaglanÆs overall success thus far. The mining industry is being challenged technically to develop lower grade orebodies at the lowest possible cost. In addition to environmental constraints, serious social, political and moral questions are being asked and added to this list of challenges. Miners throughout the world must improve their operating standards and public image if we want to attract the best possible employees. Remote mining operations provide a unique opportunity to experiment with various human resource concepts as well as demonstrate the industryÆs commitment to environmental and community concerns.

Filter Presses are used in a wide range of process industries where high quality filtration at elevated pressure is required. This is mainly due to the fact that modern presses are fitted with polypropylene filter plates which combine excellent corrosion resistance with high mechanical strength. Filtration pressures of 15 Bar at ambient temperatures are common ensuring low residual moisture content and easily manageable filter cakes. Recessed polypropylene chamber plates have been in use for the last 15-20 years and have replaced plates and frames almost entirely. The latest development in plate technology is the polypropylene membrane plate. These provide lower moisture content cakes at significantly higher capacity than recessed chamber plates. Because of their stayboss-free construction, membrane plates provide excellent cake washing facilities which make them suitable for a wide range of process applications. Membrane plates are available both as fixed and exchangeable membrane types. Overhung membranes can be fitted to existing plates manufactured in cast iron or plastic to enhance the performance of existing presses.

Hazards in underground mines are concomitant with the mining of mineral deposits and have their source in a minerÆs work environment. The authors of the paper have undertaken a trial classification of these hazards into three groups, depending on the sphere of their occurrence:lithosphere, ie rock mass, atmosphere, ie air in mine workings, and technosphere, ie machines, equipment and facilities in mine workings. The lithosphere creates such hazards as bumps, rock outbursts, the atmosphere is a factor causing fires, methane explosions and climatic hazards, whereas accidents concomitant with an operation of machines and equipment occur in the technosphere. Assuming that the number of accidents in the mining industry, concomitant with hazards, reflects the degree of safety, it has been shown, that in Poland they are under control to a large extent.

Simple parameters, capable of easy observation on-site under operating conditions without interruption to production, are outlined for the operational assessment of underground conveyor systems. Recording techniques, methods of analysis and deduction of operational characteristics are discussed for batch inputs to several points of a multiple belt conveyor system with limited inter-belt storage capacity. Particular attention is given to input and output load- time distributions, utilisation of inter-belt storage capability and system shutdown behaviour. Actual data, observed for a transfer feeder located between two trunk conveyor belts in an underground coal mine, is used to illustrate the operational assessment of an underground system. Load sensitive feedback systems-are briefly considered.

Barium anomalies in drainage sediments can act as indicators of barite mineralization and path- finders for lead-zinc mineralization. Their detection in an arid climate has been investigated in two areas of Saudi Arabia. At Rabigh, 150 km north of Jeddah, barium anomalies found in wadi sediments reflect barite veins which occupy Tertiary faults in Precambrian metavolcanics and granodiorite. In the Wadi ad Dawasir area, 650 km east of Jeddah, the sediments of wadis draining the Jabal Tuwayq escarpment have been found to contain anomalous concentrations of barium derived from diagenetic barite in the Sudair formation siltstones and shales. Barium dispersion in these wadis is predominantly clastic. Near to the source rocks, barium occurs in relatively coarse grains of barite. Owing to the three well-developed cleavages of barite, its crystals readily break into cleavage flakes during fluvial transport in flash floods; as a result, the longest anomalous dispersion trains are found in the 250 to 600 um fraction. Wadi sediments finer than 250 um have relatively constant and low barium contents, being dominantly composed of windblown sand.

An outline of the ventilation and refrigeration requirements of deep South African gold mines is presented. This is followed by a brief description of the history of controlled recirculation in mines and the practical and economic benefits such schemes can offer. The potential hazard of a fire in a recirculation system is discussed.The major part of the paper describes the first large-scale field trial of controlled recirculation to be conducted in South Africa. Emphasis is placed on the monitoring system that was used for data acquisition during the trial, and also on a safety system designed to shut off the recirculation fans in the event of a fire.The paper concludes with a review of the latest development work taking place on recirc-ulation safety systems.

The Mount Isa silver-lead-,zinc deposit possesses a number of features which sets it apart from usual occurrences of ores containing those metals. The deposit has been described in vario:us papers, but development upon deeper levels during the past two years has, yielded much information not hitherto published. Purpose of the present paper is to furnish a unified and coherent perspective by tracing briefly the full rock deformational and mineralization processes responsible for the ore deposition. The paper represents the outcome of ten years' organized geological effort at Mount Isa. Information contained in it supersedes that previously published.A bibliography of published articles relating to Mount Isa ore deposition is appended. In preparing the present paper previously published data have been drawn upon freely wherever applicable. The authors are especially indebted to the papers by Grondijs and Schouten, and by O'Malley and McGhie, which present results of systematic microscope studies of thin and polished sections from comprehensive suites of Mount Isa ore.

The Macquarie Dictionary defines `information' as: knowledge communicated or received concerning some fact or circumstance; (in communicating theory): a quantitative measure of the contents of a message. For mining companies investing in data capture and information processing technology for operations management is a key issue. Beyond producing performance related information that employees can relate to it is being able to deliver that information into the workplace when it is required, to the employees that can utilise it. To be effective the data needs to be received and understood as `information'. The technology is now available and proven to enable `information' to be delivered into the mining workplace adding value to the activities performed by mine employees. The application of computers and information technology in the mining industry has typically been limited to the resource definition and planning stages, accounting and administration and the process plants that treat the ores and minerals. The mining extraction processes that consume expenditure and determine output in a mining operation occur in an environment dominated by unpredictable events and variable conditions. The mining operation has long been regarded as an inexact science conducted in unpredictable circumstances with many independent variables affecting the output and resultant cost of production. Financial accountants keep track of expenditure and management accountants analyse the cost of production usually on a weekly or monthly basis but all this effort can't affect the outcome, that was determined by the real time events and variations of circumstances over a week ago. Such reporting and analysis can result in conclusions being drawn about what improvements can be made and how you might do better next time, but generally the data is not detailed enough, is inaccurate or misrepresents the real issues. The capital investment required for any mining operation is substantial and comparable to other industries such as manufacturing. The performance and utilisation of manufacturing plants is usually closely monitored down to the lowest level of detail. Many modern plants are controlled and optimised using programmable intelligent devices and monitors display real time performance to the operators and prompt them to make informed decisions to maximise production and minimise wastage. Technology suitable for the mining industry is now widely available and has proven to be a reliable and powerful tool for the optimisation of mining operations. This paper focuses on the latest information technology developed by Modular Mining Systems that has been implemented in mining operations worldwide. The benefits reported by the mining companies utilising real time information technology over the past 15 years have generally related to optimisation of truck fleet allocation and material blending. Some mining operations have reported improvements in equipment utilisation of greater than 20 per cent. With the development of real time graphical display screens in the operators cabins the benefits of information delivery can be harnessed to make employees more effective in the workplace.

"Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). Major cities are not only the focal point for AustralianÆs work, leisure and homes, they also are the focal point for the flow of resources into the built environment, motor cars and transportation and urban consumables. The steady increases in æstockÆ and waste generation, in line with GDP growth, means that cities will become the mine sites of the future if the inherent value is recovered from these materials at end of life. The urban waste stream can be characterised as containing approximately nine per cent hydrocarbon-based materials; 57 per cent biomass-based material; 28 per cent fully mineralised materials that are inert, five per cent metals and less than one per cent of problematic materials that are potentially hazardous and toxic. In order to convert these wastes into value added inputs into the economy, a number of technological interventions are required. These æurban waste mining techniquesÆ revolve around source separation and material streaming. One issue that needs to be overcome when determining which mining technique to implement, is identifying the option that will deliver optimal value, both from a financial and a sustainability perspective. The difference between embodied energy and calorific value is a case in point. Highest net resource value (HNRV) is a concept that can assist in choosing between different resource recovery options. The assessment can be done at a strategic level, or can be used to work out material specific issues. For example, used tyres can be recovered for their energy content at an approximate cost of $120 per tonne, whereas mechanical processing of used tyres can deliver a net benefit of $192.

The mining industry will face numerous challenges over the next 10–15 years as new deposits are likely to be more remote and lower grade and existing deposits will be mined deeper. As a result, mines and mining contractors operating in deep-mine conditions will need to focus on the quality of drilling and blasting to minimise unnecessary waste rock excavation to keep costs at an acceptable level. In addition, increased demand for improved safety and operator ergonomics will set greater demands on original equipment manufacturers of mining equipment. Finally, difficulties finding a skilled and experienced workforce, particularly in remote mine locations, have already negatively impacted mines’ ability to achieve high productivity and low operating costs.This paper introduces techniques and shares practical experiences in increasing productivity and reducing the costs of excavation in underground face drilling. The paper uses Sandvik’s new DD422i automated mining jumbo as an example of the type of equipment needed to deliver the features and corresponding benefits for future mine development. It has been a generally held concept that crushing operations were, by their nature, too simple to benefit from the implementation of advanced process control. The commissioning of an OCS¬ expert control system and image-based oversize detection system, VisioRock, at the Pilbara Iron Tom Price facility are dispelling these notions. A constraint-based OCS¬ expert control system has been designed and commissioned on the high-grade crushing and screening plant along with a vision-based oversize detection system functioning on six product conveyor belts. To date, the expert control has demonstrated the ability to increase production by maximising dynamic constraint utilisation. Dynamic constraint utilisation is a concept developed by Rio Tinto Technical Services for effectively evaluating constraint-based control logic performance. The VisioRock system has been installed and configured and has been operating for a period of several months. Currently, Tom Price and Metso personnel are working to define correct oversize detection thresholds. Details of the plant implementation are discussed.

Iron Road Limited is currently studying the feasibility of producing 20 Mt/a of high-grade (67 per cent Fe) magnetite concentrate from a 2.6 Bt resource (JORC) located at Warramboo on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bulk concentrate has been tested at a relatively coarse grind size of -106 ¦m. The preliminary flow sheet has been confirmed based on initial mine plans and comprehensive metallurgical testing across the range of mineralisation. Extensive Davis tube testing to predict magnetite recoveries has been conducted over the resource, however this was completed at settings different to the optimised settings developed in the metallurgical test work program.This paper outlines the development of an ore treatment simulation in SysCAD which utilises the mine production plan, the Davis tube test data from the resource, data from metallurgical test work and process design criteria to predict magnetite concentrate deliveries. Mineralogical data, including QEMScan results and metallurgical assessments, were a fundamental basis of the process models which enable predictions of concentrate yield and quality. Power and water requirements are also calculated within the model. SysCAD dynamic simulation has been used to assist with the design of the process plant and downstream infrastructure.
