The fast tracked mine development strategy attempts to blend feasibility studies and engineering/commissioning functions into a streamlined process. In this compressed process, environmental issues are difficult to control with respect to the optimisation of operational environmental performance. This paper presents a standard mine development process with specific focus on environmental issues, and contrasts this against Rio TintoÆs recent fast track experiences on the Hail Creek project (Australia), the Baranj project (India) and the Gokwe North project (Zimbabwe).

Rehabilitation approaches, methods and outcomes have changed markedly over the last 100 years, and especially over the last 20 years. Alluvial gold dredges have moved from creating a legacy of boulder fields and ponds to radiata pine plantations and highly productive dairy pastures. The rehabilitated farmland has reduced flood risk, improved drainage and efficient paddock design. The next challenge is to include areas of environmental diversity in these projects, for example, shelter belts, patches of native trees, and wetlands that were part of the original landscape.   West Coast coal mines have also come from a legacy of leaving it to nature to rehabilitate damage by mining to establishing native ecosystems or plantation forests. Developments in techniques at Stockton Mine are used to illustrate the changes in approach to rehabilitation of native forest and tussock heathland ecosystems. The proposed Cypress Mine will adopt a full range of avoidance, remediation through rehabilitation, and off-site mitigation techniques in a æthree-prongedÆ approach.   We propose a coordinated extractive industry approach to mitigate for the impacts of mining on native ecosystems and achieve nationally important conservation benefits that individual projects cannot afford. This approach is particularly beneficial in New Zealand, as our native ecosystems must be actively managed to conserve native plants and animals. Currently, some important species and ecosystems are not being actively managed for conservation.

A forecast of energy demand in the non-commu- nist world to the year 1990 is presented with com- ments on the expected effectiveness of conservation efforts in achieving more efficient utilization of energy. A forecast of energy supply for the same period is presented showing the contribution of oil, gas, hydropower, coal, and nuclear fuels, with brief comments on the factors constraining the rate of growth of non-oil energy supplies. The role of `synthetic fuels', i.e. liquid or gaseous fuels produced from coal, oil shale, and tar sands, is reviewed with brief discussion of factors affecting the development of this industry. In somewhat greater details, the growth of demand for oil by geographic regions is analyzed. Particular attention is directed to the source of the oil supplies which will be required. The anticipated rate of discovery of new oil reserves is discussed with comments on lead times required in the development of new discoveries in hostile environments such as the Arctic and deep oceans. The continuing importance of oil supplied from countries which are members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is illustrated. Oil will continue to be the marginal ('balancing') source of world energy supply throughout the forecast period and although it now appears that oil supplies will be sufficient to balance the energy equation during the 1980s, little flexi- bility will exist to cope with unexpected growth in demand or slippage in supply. Prudent energy re- source management will require major efforts to stimulate conservation and also to stimulate the rapid development of conventional and new forms of energy supplies and changes in energy consump- tion patterns to utilize the new supplies. Because of the long lead times and the massive capital require- ments involved, governmental policies are needed soon which will stimulate conservation and which will encourage businesses to move rapidly to assure the energy supplies the world will require in the 1990s.

With the increased focus on the need for more uranium mines, this paper presents the design process currently underway for the development of the Millennium deposit in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. This deposit, located 630 - 750 m below surface, will be accessed by two shafts and will be mined by blasthole stoping methods at less than 500 t/d. Mining grade will approximate two per cent U3O8 and mine life is expected to be six to seven years. The project is a joint venture between Cameco, AREVA and JCU. This paper discusses in detail methods used to predict worker radiation exposures, the methods used to monitor the work environment and procedures unique to the uranium industry necessary to minimise worker radiation exposures.

Energy Savings and Technology Comparison Using Small Grinding Media Considering the complexity of minerals, the need for finer grinding is increasing along with the energy cost. However, energy is increasing exponentially when grinding finer with conventional grinding balls. The use of small grinding media represents the best potential to improve energy efficiency. Today, it is possible to use grinding media as small as 1 mm. How do they perform in industrial grinding mills? The use of small grinding media (5 - 12 mm), called Millpebs, in regrind mills proved that finer grinding can be achieved at lower energy consumption. In ball mills, energy savings vary from 10 per cent to 40 per cent compared to 25 mm media. A regrind ball mill with a mix of small grinding media can be as energy efficient as an Isa Mill charged with 2.5 and 3.5 mm beads. In vertical stirred mills, energy savings vary from 30 per cent to 60 per cent. To carry out the same final grind, a vertical stirred mill with Millpebs will consume at least 60 per cent less energy than a ball mill using 25 mm grinding media. More potential savings were identified. To achieve those improvements, some operating conditions must be met: 1) feed size should be less than 250 ¦m; 2) the pulp must be fluid enough; 3) finally, the slurry linear velocity should not be excessive. This paper talks about all those industrial results improvement and operating conditions.

The Nena high sulphidation-type copper-gold deposit is composed of andesitic pyroclastic units with minor interstratified lava flows. Epiclastic sandstone and conglomerate, and siliciclastic rocks consisting of mudstone, shale, lithic and bioclastic sandstone and conglomerate are locally present. Pre-mineral diorite intruded and domed the volcano-siliciclastic sequence. Economic copper-gold is hosted by vuggy quartz altered lapilli tuff and tuff breccia. The early hydrothermal alteration stage involved deposition of epithermal banded quartz and chalcedonic silica in localised environments. This alteration stage was locally superimposed by a hydrothermal breccia event. Following the breccia event, magmatically-derived volatiles were channelled through a NW striking dilational fault zone and generated the high sulphidation alteration. The high sulphidation alteration is zoned from a vuggy quartz core with local massive replacement silica through a broad pyritic quartz-alunite halo and finally to a thin illite-smectite zone. This is surrounded by regional chlorite-epidote-smectite alteration. A gangue mineral phase consisting of quartz, alunite and baryte overprinted the zoned high sulphidation alteration and preceded the main copper-gold-arsenic mineralisation. Early sulphide deposition is characterised by marcasite, arsenical pyrite and melnicovenite. Main-stage copper-gold mineralisation involved sequential deposition of hypogene bladed covellite+chalcocite, enargite-luzonite and luzonite+stibioluzonite respectively. The copper sulphides are zoned from bladed covellite-chalcocite in the north (cross-sections 5000 - 5600 N) through enargite-luzonite (cross-sections 4700 - 5000 N) and to luzonite????stibioluzonite in the south (cross-sections 4400 - 4700 N). A late phase of minor acicular covellite and enargite+luzonite overprinted the zoned copper sulphides and associated gold mineralisation. Gold mineralisation commenced at the transition from enargite to luzonite, and continued through the deposition of luzonite-stibioluzonite in both stages. Most gold was deposited during the main-stage mineralisation. Yellow native sulphur was deposited in the remaining vugs and defines the waning stage of the hydrothermal system. Post-mineral dioritic intrusives and feldspar porphyries intruded the volcano-siliciclastic sequence. Finally, supergene chemical processes with associated erosion and uplift generated a 40 - 50 m thick oxide-hosted gold cap. The oxide gold cap is underlain by a 35 - 45 m thick blanket of supergene chalcocite+covellite mineralisation which overlies and occurs throughout the main hypogene copper-gold zone. Supergene gold is related to the distribution of primary gold-bearing sulphides. Therefore, remobilisation and redeposition of gold are considered to be insignificant and very localised.

Mining and metallurgical processing of gold and base metal ores often results in solid wastes and effluents containing high concentrations of arsenic. In addition, arsenic can be released to the atmosphere from gold roasters and base metal smelters. Speciation of arsenic in roaster products, in a stack sample from a copper smelter, in organic soils impacted by smelter emissions, and in an anaerobic effluent treatment system at a smelter site was determined in order to broaden our understanding of the nature and occurrence of arsenic in a wider range of metallurgical wastes. Micro-XANES spectra obtained from iron oxide particles forming in a gold roaster indicate preferential enrichment of As3+ species in maghemite-rich domains and microlayers. In comparison, haematite-rich iron oxide particles are dominated by As5+ species. It appears that maghemite is retarding oxidation of arsenic and its volatilisation during roasting. Arsenic occurs as both As3+ and As5+ species in a stack sample emitted from a Cu smelter, confined to fine-grained secondary product layers accumulated on the surfaces of spherical Cu particles. This is probably resulting from condensation of As species upon cooling following their volatilisation during the combustion process. Soil samples collected at various distances from the Cu smelter are dominated by As5+ species including monomethylarsonic acid and tetramethylarsonium iodide as the organic arsenic species. The presence of reduced As3+ species highlights the importance of organic material influencing the speciation of arsenic and mineralogical transformations taking place within the soil profile. The XANES spectra indicate that arsenic occurs predominantly as aqueous arsenite species in the anaerobic treatment system, contrary to the conventional thinking of As retention by the formation of secondary sulfides.

BHP Billiton, in collaboration with Sodern and CSIRO, has developed a downhole logging tool for measuring geochemistry in situ. The FastGradeTM 100 (alternatively, FG100), exploits pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis (PFTNA) to analyse the rock. This method is based on the detection and measurement of characteristic gamma rays emitted from isotopes in the material that become briefly radioactive when they are bombarded with neutrons. The tool outputs raw spectra arising from three types of neutron interaction, namely, inelastic scattering, neutron capture and neutron activation, which occur in successive time-windows (Smith et al, 2015). The spectra contain peaks at specific energies that are characteristic of the different elements interacting with the neutrons, the gamma count of which is related to elemental concentration. BHP Billiton uses in-house data processing software to convert the measured spectra to elemental concentrations.Much work has been done to understand the tool response under a wide variety of environmental and operating conditions, including logging speed, borehole rugosity, the presence of cavities, water etc. Effort has also been directed at understanding and quantifying the current sources of error in our conventional assays due to sample collection, preparation, and laboratory instrumentation in order to use this information as a baseline to compare against the FastGradeTM 100 results.To date, the FastGradeTM 100 primary use has been as a verification tool (JORC, 2012). However, beyond this, it has considerable potential to improve productivity in both exploration and production environments due to its ability to provide geologists with assay results soon after a hole is drilled.This paper presents initial test work and tool performance, including accuracy and precision under various conditions. A survey has been undertaken of the petrography of North Island greywackes with a particular focus on the occurrence in them of smectite (swelling clay) and chlorite, two minerals that are closely associated, chemically similar, and commonly interlayered with each other. Smectite is the mineral which is a major cause of greywacke aggregatesÆ poor performance. Smectite occurs in post-metamorphic shear zones and in surface weathering profiles over greywackes. This study focuses on the petrography of fresh greywacke rocks.   The occurrence and abundance of smectite and chlorite and their relationship in greywackes is largely a function of the chemistry of the sediment and the maximum temperature that the sediment has been subjected to during diagenesis and/or very low grade (anchizone) metamorphism. Rock chemistry, particularly total iron and MgO, determines the smectite and/or chlorite content in fine-grained greywackes (argillites and siltstones) but chemistry is less influential in sandstones, where at low grades of metamorphism much of the Fe and Mg of the rock is held in unreacted detrital minerals and the mineral constituents of lithic grains.   Four zones which represent different levels of diagenesis and very low grade metamorphism, based on the crystallinity of illite and chlorite in the greywackes, and the proportion of smectite interlayered with chlorite, have been mapped in the North Island. In the anchizone smectite does not appear as a discrete mineral, it is always interlayered with chlorite. In the upper anchizone chlorite contains approximately ten per cent of smectite interlayered with chlorite. In the lower anchizone about 30 per cent smectite can occur in chlorite.   In addition to the smectite and chlorite inherent in the greywackes as the result of the thermal overprint, smectite as a discrete mineral and smectite-chlorite interlayered minerals with high levels of smectite, occur in abundance on shear zone surfaces and in alteration zones adjacent to shear zones; these are the main contributers to the high levels of smectite recorded in many greywacke aggregates.

OneSteel and BlueScope Steel have been working with the CSIRO to develop sustainable carbon fuels and reductants which are suitable for use in the iron and steel industry. One of the initial focuses of this work has been a process called steel recarburisation which is the addition of carbon to liquid steel to produce particular steel grades. This paper reports on the preliminary work and the recent full scale recarburisation plant trials conducted at the OneSteel Sydney Steel Mill.   Preliminary experimental work involved kilogram scale recarburisation of liquid steel with a range of commercial and prepared charcoal products. This work showed that charcoal dissolves into liquid steel very quickly and that carbon recovery to steel was inversely related to the charcoal volatile content. Initial larger scale work focused on the collection of wood, and preparation of low volatile charcoal which is required for steel recarburisation. Approximately three tonnes of charcoal was prepared at the Corrimal coke ovens of the Illawarra Coke Company. This charcoal was dried, crushed, sized and packaged in a form suitable for addition to 80 tonne liquid steel ladles.   The recarburisation trial was conducted over 30 ladle heats during June 2009. The charcoal was manually added to the liquid steel in 5 kg bags using normal plant practice. Conventional commercial recarburiser was also added to the liquid steel in alternate ladle heats. The performance of the charcoal was compared with the conventional recarburiser based on the carbon recovery to steel, hydrogen pick-up by steel and the rate of carbon dissolution into steel.   An analysis of the trial results showed that the charcoal performed at least as well as commercial recarburiser in carbon recovery and rate of dissolution but may have resulted in a slightly higher hydrogen content of steel. This is probably due to the higher moisture content of charcoal. The main challenges in the future include: increasing the charcoal density to improve transport and handling economics, securing a sustainable supply of biomass for the steel industry and developing a charcoal production industry so materials of suitable quality for both production and trials on other applications can be conducted.

Podiform chromitites are commonly found in the Moho transition zone to the mantle section of ophiolites, but have been very rarely found from the current ocean floor, even though some ophiolites are considered as a slice of oceanic lithosphere. One of the factors controlling podiform chromitite formation is the chemistry of host mantle peridotite; an intermediately refractory harzburgite is the optimum host for chromitites. This harzburgite represents the most common lithology of the oceanic lithosphere, where the peridotite-melt reaction, which is another condition, is possibly common there. The oceanic lithosphere mantle is thus a good host for podiform chromitites. The apparent rarity of documented oceanic chromitites is solely due to under-sampling of mantle materials from the fast-spreading ridge and the segment centre of slow-spreading ridges. Some ophiolitic chromitites formed not from genuine mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB) but from wet MORB due to the situation of typical ophiolites, which formed not at ordinary mid-ocean ridges but at supra-subduction zone spreading centres.CITATION:Arai, S, 2015. Iron Road Limited (IRD) is currently developing the Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) at Warramboo on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The project consists of a 30 year open pit mine, magnetite processing facilities, standard-gauge railway and deep water, Cape class capable port. Major South Australian government approvals have been received and funding arrangements confirmed.The 4.5 Bt Mineral Resource (3.7 Bt Ore Reserve), the largest in Australia and among the largest globally, is to be mined to produce 24 Mt/a high-grade, 67 per cent Fe, magnetite concentrate. This in-demand, premium product has a P80 of ~100 µm, suitable for both direct sinter feed and an additive in pelletising.The extensively drilled, homogeneous orebody is unique in both geology and mineralogy; only averaging 15 per cent Fe yet coarse-grained with almost negligible phosphorus and sulfur content. This has allowed significant opportunities to tailor the mining method to the orebody, utilising both optimised blasting as first stage comminution, as well as in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) to reduce the heavy haulage diesel fleet and optimise the pit shell.Approximately 1 Mt/d of total material, ore and waste, is required to be moved from the pit daily, introducing materials handling challenges, overcome by a flexible IPCC set-up, multiple overland conveyors and an exacting mine plan. Non-conventional waste and tailings storage is utilised to allow for significant water savings, progressive rehabilitation and minimisation of land impact.The processing facilities utilise both the magnetic and density properties of the magnetite to beneficiate the ore. The coarse-grained nature of the ore is exploited to minimise comminution yet still liberate a high quality product. Utilisation of modular construction methods allows risk reduction during construction and reduced pumping requirements during operation.This paper highlights the uniqueness of the CEIP, with focus on the mineralisation of the orebody, and the beneficial impacts this has on both the proposed mining method and processing. The Reefton Goldfield, both historically and potentially, represents a significant gold producing camp in the Westland province of New Zealand. Some two million ounces of gold have been produced from the Greenland Group host rocks between 1870 and 1951 with the most significant producers being the Blackwater and Globe Progress mines.   Steep terrain, high rainfall, poor outcrop, widespread fluvio-glacial deposits, tertiary cover and sometimes onerous environmental access conditions have proved a challenge to conventional exploration techniques. In addition classic exploration techniques have come up against a desire to reduce exploration cycle time and exploration costs while increasing both quality and quantity of geological information.   The trial, and subsequent implementation, of Wacker sampling has proved a highly successful and effective geochemical tool currently being utilised to target, discover, and define potential economic gold mineralisation in the Reefton Goldfield.

The use of walk-through inspections, approvals and ad hoc investigations to ensure risk is kept within acceptable levels is reaching its limits of effectiveness. Further improvement in occupational health and safety requires a systems approach, and the use of Quality Management principles is an obvious basis for this. SafeGuard, a æbest practiceÆ model health and safety management system and audit criteria based on AS/NZS ISO 9001:1994, has been produced by the Department of Mines and Energy. Quality style audits of mine and quarry health and safety systems are now being carried out by the Inspectorate.

In March 1990, Heritage Mining conducted a 2000 line km high resolution aeromagnetic survey of all its prospects in the Coromandel Peninsula. One of the areas covered was the Onemana Peninsula, situated about 5 km north of Whangamata. Details of location and geology are given by Robson and Stevens (this volume).   The detailed helicopter-borne magnetic and radiometric survey over the Onemana area consisted of 163 line kmÆs of flying, and was carried out in order to assist in the definition of hydrothermal alteration and pre- or post- mineralisation structures. The line spacing chosen was 100 m, flown east-west, with a mean sensor terrain clearance of 80 m. Tie lines were flown north-south every kilometre for levelling purposes. The sensor was a Geoinstruments G-813 proton precession magnetometer in a towed bird, with data recorded using a Geoinstruments G-2000 acquisition system.   The Onemana alteration system is at the northern end of a major north-north east trending structural corridor defined by regional aeromagnetic surveys performed by AMOCO in 1980 (Rabone, 1991). T his structure hosts a number of other extinct hydrothermal systems including Karangahake and Golden Cross. In the Onemana contour plot the predominant north-northeast structures form the boundaries of a large area of subdued magnetism in the southern part of the surveyed area that is caused by intense hydrothermal alteration. This area is about 3.5 km long by 1 km or more wide and contains outcropping sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias, as described in Robson and Stevens. A number of other structures transect this alteration zone, with strike directions ranging from northwest to north. A northwest feature notably truncates the zone to the south, while the northern end seems to be simi1arly bounded; however as data coverage ends at the coast, this feature is less conclusive.    Two distinctive types of strongly magnetic rock were discernible the contoured data. The strong negative magnetic anomalies the north and west are caused by fresh negatively magnetised rhyolites. This was confirmed by ground follow-up work that showed the rocks to be fresh biotite rhyolites with high magnetic susceptibilities.
