Equipment maintenance is 30 - 50 per cent of the operating costs for a typical mining company. While this is substantial, its importance is beyond its significance as a cost heading. Modern mining requires large amounts of investment in capital infrastructure and equipment to produce a product sold at a low unit cost. To stay competitive, such a business has to focus on full realisation of its capital investment, ie sustained production at high levels. Maintenance plays an essential role in achieving this goal. Mining companies typically use a mix of breakdown or corrective maintenance, planned maintenance, and some condition-based maintenance. The share of breakdown maintenance has been coming down through more effective planned maintenance and better condition monitoring tools. Planned or preventive maintenance (PM) is playing an increasingly important role in todayÆs mining maintenance. This is the suite of inspection and repair/replacement actions performed at scheduled time intervals as part of a preplanned activity. The activities are scheduled well in advance and, usually, the current wear-state of the machine is irrelevant. For example, the replacement of a major gear may have been planned 18 months in advance; replacement is carried out when the time comes regardless of the actual condition of the gear. The PM costs are significant and include direct cost of parts and labour as well as the opportunity cost of lost production while the machine is under maintenance. It is important to identify the optimum PM effort because over-maintenance should be avoided as much as under-maintenance. A new concept called severity-based maintenance is introduced in this paper. We have seen that measuring equipment ageing in mining merely by counting the engine hours is a very imprecise way of planning and scheduling maintenance because the damage accumulated in one hour varies enormously from operator to operator and with changing pit conditions. We recommend continuous monitoring of duty on all major equipment. This is feasible without having to fit out the machine with an army of sensors because most of the physical sensors required by dutymeters are already installed and maintained as part of the existing performance monitors. While the investment is modest, the potential benefits are huge and can be grouped under three headings:Immediate benefits will come from providing operators with direct feedback on the effect of their behaviour on machine health and training them to use this feedback to correct their operating style. The equipment can operate closer to the limits of capacity, producing more without unduly sacrificing the availability by monitoring and controlling the severity of the operation, ie the duty on the machine. Longer term benefits accrue from establishing correlations between actual time to failure data and measured equipment duty and using these correlations to optimise maintenance effort as well as planning new equipment purchases and warranty conditions.

This paper discusses support requirements for the proposed monorail system to be used in decline development. The monorail drilling and loading systems are systems that move on the rail (monorail) installed in the roof of the decline and supported by roof bolts, suspension chains and steel supports. However, due to the weight of the components of the two systems, it is imperative that the force in each roof bolt, suspension chain and steel support capable of suspending the weight of the heaviest component is determined. Numerical models that relate the weight of the monorail drilling and loading components to the required strength in the support system have been developed. Using these developed models, numerical values of the forces in each roof bolt, suspension chain and steel support, required to suspend the weight of the heaviest component of the monorail drilling and loading systems are determined.

One of the most important goals of the experiments is to determine deformation and strength of the rock specimen under applying triaxial load, the status of failure condition is one of the subjects which can be used in soil mechanic and foundation engineering applications. To investigate the effect of confining pressure on the triaxial test, the rock has been considered as bonded-particles method and has been simulated by particle flow code three dimensions (PFC3D). This model, does not have pre-existing microcracks and all the particles have the same size (2 mm diameter), equal to the real specimen shape. To compare the mechanical behavior and failure pattern of the numerical and experimental results at uniaxial and triaxial tests at the same conditions, the Young's modulus, Possion's ratio as well as maximum axial stress have been considered. On the other hand, the microcracks growth and change of failure pattern at the modelling of the uniaxial and triaxial tests with different confining pressures up to failure point were reported. According to the experimental work, the number density of microcracks decreases from starting value and remains almost constant up to the failure beyond that point. The comparison of the numerical and experimental results of maximum axial stress and the Possion's ratio revealed good accordance. The initial number density of microcracks at the model was zero and increased while microcracking. Also, the sudden increment around the maximum stress was observed which is because of unstable growing of microcracks near the maximum stress. In all uniaxial and triaxial tests with different confining stresses, the number density of microcracks during the failure remains almost constant which can be considered as a proof of failure occurring in the model. The experimental results indicate the similar trend as well.

The Favona low-sulfidation epithermal deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield is less than one kilometre southeast of the world-class Waihi deposit. The veins are hosted by Miocene andesite of the Waipupu Formation, have a total strike length of over 900 m, a vertical extent of at least 350 m and are on average 1-3 m wide. Individual veins have been traced for 200 m with vein widths up to 25 m. The dominant vein textures are massive, crustiform and colloform banded veins and vein breccias, with subsidiary textures including comb, zonal, flamboyant, lattice-bladed, ghost-bladed, microbotryoidal, feathery, ripple and dune, and mosaic. Quartz is the dominant gangue mineral in the veins at Favona. Accessory gangue minerals include pyrite, chlorite, adularia, illite, calcite, and apatite. Electrum is the only gold-bearing mineral and is associated with acanthite, tetrahedrite, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and rare galena. Whole rock geochemical analyses indicate that gold grades correlate with textures/vein types. The highest gold and silver grades are associated with vein breccias and banded veins, with the former containing 28 g/t Au and 136 g/t Ag on average. To date, veins with significant base metal sulfide minerals, and massive and crystalline quartz veins lack significant precious metals (Au and Ag), except for one banded base metal sulfide-rich vein at Favona. An overall zonation of the veins exists, with base metal sulfide minerals dominant at depth (1050 m RL) of the system are characterised by massive quartz veins.Fluid inclusions from a total of 31 quartz, amethyst, and platy calcite veins reveal homogenisation temperatures of ~190-250¦C, with final ice melting temperatures between 0.0 and -0.8. Ice melting temperatures correspond to apparent salinities of 18O value of the water that formed these veins is approximately -4.3 per mil, which is similar to meteoric water-dominated, near neutral chloride fluids in geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone.

This paper reviews rehabilitation, closure, and post-closure management of the Tui, Golden Cross, and Martha Mines, all of which are located in the Waikato Region of New Zealand. There was no requirement for rehabilitation of the Tui mine, which was abandoned in 1973. There was a requirement to rehabilitate the Golden Cross mine. Mining at that site ceased in 1997, and rehabilitation is now well advanced. When first approved, there were some requirements for rehabilitation of the Martha Mine, but when reconsented in 1998, those were extended, and in addition a requirement for post-closure management was included. As a result, a Trust, funded by the mining company, has been established to take long-term responsibility for the site following completion of closure. The different rehabilitation/closure requirements at each of these sites illustrates that we have learnt something from the experiences of the past.

Analysis of Electrostatic Separation for Rutile Cleaning Duty Using a Plate Electrode Assisted High Tension Roll Separator A plate assisted electrostatic high tension roll separator has been used for the removal of impurity mineral grains from a rutile rich product stream. A laboratory study and a subsequent production study explored the effect of machine conditions with a view to the optimisation of the separation performance of the separator. The performance requirement was that the TiO2 grade in the non-conductor stream was to be less than ten per cent whilst at the same time the ZrO2 grade in the conductor stream had to be less than 0.5 per cent at mass recoveries of greater than 90 per cent to the conductor stream and less than 5 per cent to the non-conductor stream. Mineralogy data was utilized to determine the feasibility of achieving the production targets with the feed under study. Since the feed stream mineralogy was dominated by rutile, leucoxene and zircon, it was possible to use an approximation to the actual mineral assemblage as well as the raw X-ray fluorescence data to understand the separation duty of the Carrara machine. Since there were four conflicting criteria used for the performance requirement, an index was devised that incorporated all the requirements simultaneously. This new index was the sum of the squares of the difference between the achieved and desired values, weighted with respect to the variance of each variable. If the desired value for a particular criterion had been met its contribution to the sum was set to zero, no matter how well the criterion had been met. For the production machine the strict requirements were almost achieved. As expected, the achievement of the target performance was dependent of the feed conditions at the time of measurement. This paper reports the results of this study.

Mineral formations, accumulated during technogenic activities greatly influence an economic and ecological situation in the Kola North. On the one hand, the dumps from extraction of mineral resources, tailing ponds of beneficating plants, ash dumps, wastes of metallurgical and mechanical engineering productions destroy the regionÆs environment and require taking certain measures and costs to bury or protect from weathering, oxidation, etc. On the other hand, technogenic mineral formations contain a lot of valuable scarce components. The amount of solid wastes increases annually, causing damage to ecology and economy. Researches conducted in recent years showed a possibility and economic expediency of comprehensive processing of wastes from different enterprises in Murmansk region and their use for production of new competitive commodity output, possessing high consumer properties. Thus, involving mineral wastes from Khibiny apatite deposits into hydrometallurgical industrial processing provides the basis for setting up a large beneficating-metallurgical complex. In this case ores and wastes from other deposits on the Kola Peninsula, containing titanium, rare, rare-earth and other valuable elements, may be involved into processing. Establishing such a complex will allow to organise a deep processing of natural resources, utilise some production wastes, improve ecological security and supply production with competitive output. Expanding the complex implies not only involving new mineral raw material into processing, but mainly deepening raw material processing, maximum utilisation of local natural resources and obtaining a wider variety of prime products.

Technically competent, skilled and efficient people are often promoted into management and leadership positions, climbing through the ranks to senior positions without training or direction in soft skilling. These soft skills are what really motivate teams to achieve business goals. This paper looks at the three key soft skill areas that compel teams to follow leaders, namely manners, mentoring and motivation. Our manners control our behaviour and attitudes and operate at a subconscious level. The manners that æmaketh the manager worth followingÆ are discussed with the express purpose of bringing these to our consciousness. When we recognise those behaviours that alienate or inspire we can consciously behave in ways to lead our teams towards our goals. Our attitude to mentoring and developing people around us speaks of our commitment to our people and our industry. Surprisingly, the more we give the more we get. Mentoring gives us an opportunity to leave a legacy, inspire commitment and build support within the mining community. How do we as managers provide mentoring within our teams? What are the mentoring behaviours that inspire learning and commitment to a managerÆs goals? When managers can identify an individualÆs unique mix of motivational drivers, they can understand how to motivate them. And motivated people are more likely to be retained and work towards the managerÆs goals. The soft skills used to understand and motivate within the three core motivation drivers (competence, expression and treatment) are presented. This paper is designed to share straightforward soft skills for managers who have tread the technical route.

Downer’s mining division has made an operational and financial commitment to developing engineered solutions that mitigate the risks associated with operator proximity to uncontrolled development drill boom movements, and unguarded rotating drill steels.With the potential for serious injury or fatality, these identified risks are categorised as critical. Previous attempts by the industry to engineer them out have produced limited success, with numerous incidents still occurring year on year. Ultimately, the industry (as a whole) remains reliant on procedural prevention for operator safety.Downer understood the success of such an initiative would largely depend on the effective collaboration between operational experience, technology experts and automation. With so many variables requiring consideration; such as physical operator movement, machine boom movements, variable machine positions, and underground environmental impacts – challenging traditional technologies was necessary to deliver an optimal solution.For that reason, discrete detection (similar to laser curtains or beams) was considered not fit for purpose. The use of situational mapping, using rotating lasers, however, provided the optimal solution. The lasers collect data that is then processed using a custom software application.The software application is specifically programmed for tracking and classifying objects within detection zones, using advanced algorithms and filtering. Recognition and removal of non-positive disturbances are possible without losing personnel detection capability. The detection of relevant classified objects (humans) is determined by analysis of object size, age, movement, and speed etc. When the relevant object is detected, an alarm and inhibit function is applied preventing drilling functions.Any breach of the safety zone (forward of the front jacks) will automatically disable the hydraulic boom function. This can only be reset in the cabin once the person or persons have returned past the front jacks of the development drill into the safety zone.Downer, in collaboration with partner YUMARR Automation, has successfully developed this reliable boom isolation system, and is called JumboGuard. New methods of analysing and modelling flotation circuits have been developed as part of the AMIRA P9 mineral processing research project. A study using these techniques was conducted on the Olympic Dam copper flotation circuit to provide the following outcomes: an estimate of the flotation cell hydrodynamic properties and froth performance characteristics, and identification of potential areas for improvement; an estimate of the feed floatability parameters for basic model development; and identification of potential flotation circuit improvement opportunities. A flotation circuit model of the Olympic Dam copper concentrator was developed using the data collected from mass balanced site surveys, along with hydrodynamic data, froth performance data and numerous laboratory batch flotation tests. The simulator that has been developed from the model has the ability to estimate the influence of selected changes (such as circuit changes) on flotation circuit performance. Several stream destination simulations were conducted to provide guidance for further testwork and possible circuit improvements. The results from these simulations are presented.

The installation of the George Fisher flowsheet in the lead/zinc concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited has recently been completed. The George Fisher flowsheet involved moving flotation capacity from the lead circuit to the zinc circuit and changes in zinc circuitry, changes in the reagent regime and increased regrinding capacity, using IsaMills, to regrind some streams to 80 per cent passing seven microns. The project was highly successful, delivering a five per cent increase in zinc recovery within a fortnight of commissioning. The George Fisher flowsheet was developed over six years. Laboratory work built upon the knowledge gained from investigating and processing the Mount Isa and Hilton orebodies. The engineering design and construction for the brownfield expansion of the existing lead/zinc concentrator had significant involvement from the operational, maintenance and technical personnel. Experienced personnel were seconded from the concentrator to the design and construction groups to ensure smooth integration of the new flowsheet into the existing concentrator with minimum downtime, and maximising the reuse of existing equipment. The combination of thorough design, good project integration with operations, and a good commissioning plan allowed almost immediate delivery of project gains. The project was highly successful, the full design improvements were achieved within two weeks, allowing the focus to move to developing future improvements.

INVESTIGATIONS IN 1936In 1936 the Industrial Pulmonary Disease Committee of the Medical Research Council investigated both clinically and radiologically a group of fifty workers who had been exposed for a number of years to the inhalation of alumina in the reduction factory of the British Aluminium Company. The results are shown in Table 1.They also considered the sickness records of all the workers (Hill, 1936), as compared with those in other parts of the factory (Table 2).

Prefeasibility planning and cost estimation of conveyor systems has historically been undertaken by comparing fixed plant transport requirements to that of similar systems in service. This paper describes the development of a prefeasibility conveyor technical design and cost estimation application using Microsoft Excel Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) platform. The application tool known as D-Convey (Dachshund Convey) was developed with the goal enabling the end user:- to develop a technical model for conceptualised conveyor systems,- to perform economic analysis on the developed technical model, and - to conduct a comparative and risk analysis.An Excel VBA based platform was utilised to draw upon both the analytical and graphical capabilities of a spreadsheet. Some of the features of D-Convey system include a revolutionary dynamic graphical help system, known as the 'information pane' in lieu of traditional help files as well as the use of familiar graphical user interface elements such as the MS Office 2007 task ribbon. The D-Convey system incorporates material database allowing for mass handling prefeasibility estimation in other industries; it has been validated at a local quarry.

Resources and reserves are critical inputs into the determination of an operating mineÆs financial results and balance sheets, but how well understood is this fact. Do the investors, directors, accountants and geologists/engineers responsible for preparing or relying on relevant aspects of the end results properly understand the inputs and outputs and the associated risks that may be established. The first step is to understand how financial reports are impacted. The most obvious, and best known, impact is in the calculation of depreciation and amortisation charges against long term assets. In addition, however, there is a requirement to regularly determine whether asset book values are impaired û this is nearly always performed globally by the preparation of a discounted cashflow model for a mine which is usually based on a mine life as determined from the resource and reserve statement û the particular driver here is normally the short and long term production plans. A key aspect of the short term production plan is that it would normally not assume that the reserve and resource statement implies consistent grade, stripping ratios, etc. However, outside of the early years of a plan, more generic assumptions of these variables are often made in conjunction with the reserve and resource statement. Depending on the timeframe of the detailed production plans, this can have a large impact on a projectÆs net present value. Other financial balances that may also be impacted include restoration and rehabilitation provisions, retrenchment provisions and deferred or equalisation stripping accounts. The age old question of whether all reserves should be used or whether some or all of the resources should be included for financial reporting purposes has never been adequately resolved. It is our view that there should be no prescriptive answer to this question but judgement of all professionals involved in the process needs to be included. Furthermore, the company needs to be able to support their conclusions with well thought out and appropriate answers. This may not be in line with the approach that certain accounting standard setters may be proposing or taking, and this paper will outline the current status of global requirement and the likely future directions. Whether reserves or resources are utilised, does not change the key requirement that those preparing or using reserve and resource statements need to understand key aspects. For example: geologists/engineers do they know how reserves or resources will be used? have they imparted information on variability of key drivers such as grade or depth or dilution? do they know that major financial/business altering decisions may be made based on the analysis? accountants do they understand where the numbers have been derived from and the assumptions that may have been made in their determination? do they understand the degree of accuracy (or inaccuracy) that may exist particularly with resources)? do they understand the history of resource reconciliations and what it may mean for the future? directors do they understand the processes undertaken by the company to prepare the financial report and the interaction between the geologists/engineers and accountants? do they understand the potential sensitivity of results to the input variables? Financial reporting is extremely reliant on the use of the reserves and resources, however, the geologists/engineers, accountants and directors do not always understand the interactions between themselves which may lead to misleading public reporting. More education and communication between various parties is needed.

The concept of a magnetic hydro-cyclone is undeveloped, possibly because studies by Bragard (1965) and the Royal School of Mines in London (Robinson, 1965) were not encouraging. Its role for the concentration of ironsands is attractive in that the classifying effect within a hydrocyclone may be comparable to the classifying effect in the gravity concentration of ironsands, and thus two steps may be achieved in one. Furthermore it should be a very simple and cheap process. The idea has been explored intermittently since 1976 but more energetically since the offering of a magnetic hydro-cyclone thickener by Boxmag Rapid (1983). This paper summarises the development and test work which are detailed elsewhere (Fricker, 1984).

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and other near infrared (NIR) tools have been used in the bauxite industry for many years. Infrared spectroscopy exploits the differences in chemical composition and lattice structure to produce a characteristic response. Spectral devices, such as those from ASD Inc and the HyLoggerTM, provide qualitative mineralogical data targeted towards hydrated minerals detected in the near and short wave infrared region. The FTIR spectrum extends into the mid and thermal infrared range and can therefore respond to the presence of silicates and oxides, in addition to hydrates and carbonates.The key to successful utilisation of infrared spectra, however, is the interpretation methodology. In this study, FTIR spectra were calibrated against quantitative X-ray diffraction data for the determination of the mineralogy of iron ore. A full pattern profiling machine learning technique was utilised for the calibration, and the assessment of the regressions determined from an independent validation set. The abundance of key minerals – hematite, goethite, kaolinite and quartz – were determined and the results correlated against X-ray fluorescence assays and loss on ignition data. The results of the study indicate that spectral techniques using a full-pattern profiling machine learning approach and artificial neural networks can be used successfully to obtain objective and quantitative mineralogical data to support field observations and analytical results for iron ore resource modelling. A comparison of this technique to the cost, quality and timeliness of other quantitative mineralogy tools is also made.CITATION:Carter, J, Auyong, K and Dixon, L, 2017. Metals are well suited to sustainable development goals. They are not biodegradable and have virtually an unlimited lifespan and the potential for unlimited recyclability. Thus metals can be considered as renewable materials. However mineral resources, the source of primary metals, are ænon-renewableÆ as their supply is finite, but this does not necessarily mean scarcity. In this paper the results from a series of Life Cycle Assessments of primary metal production processes for copper, nickel, lead, zinc, aluminium and steel have been used to examine how metals may contribute to societyÆs transition to sustainable development. Particular issues considered include:current metal reserves and how these may change in the future; some of the environmental impacts (Total Energy, Global Warming Potential and Acidification Potential) associated with primary metal production and how they will be exacerbated by declining ore grades; new processing technologies with lower energy consumptions and improved metal extraction efficiencies that will reduce reserve depletion and environmental impacts; increasing the utilisation of æmetals in useÆ by recycling, with particular reference to aluminium; and the potential impact of a carbon tax on metal prices and how this may influence the ways in which metals are used in the future.

The final arsenic bearing waste products at the majority of metallurgical and chemical enterprises are cakes in which arsenic is present in the form of calcium arsenate. Burial of cakes demands construction of special burial sites and does not guarantee reliable protection from arsenic penetration into the ground and surface waters. Under laboratory conditions we developed technology for processing calcium arsenate cakes with obtaining low toxic products suitable for long-term storage, meeting environmental requirements. The investigations have shown that thermal processing of briquetted mixtures of cakes containing 15 - 20 per cent weight of pyrite under the temperature of 873 - 923¦K during 45 - 60 minutes gives briquettes sufficiently hard for transportation and long-term storage. Arsenic, under high sulphidisation temperature is bonded into low solubility non-volatile iron sulphide bearing compounds having chemical properties similar to the natural arsenic compounds. Solubility of the obtained products in neutral, acid and alkaline media was investigated during long period of time (three to 12 months). It was determined that arsenic content in the solutions did not exceed the norms for cultural and welfare basins and fish-ponds.

In the geologically prospective nations which rim the Pacific Ocean, mineral deposits offer great potential to create wealth for social and economic development. The paper first examines the geological and economic attributes of potential mineral wealth based on current outlook assessment of all significant base metal deposits discovered to 1988 in two Pacific Rim nations - Australia and Canada . The variability of mineral wealth among the economic deposits evaluated and the major contribution of the few world-class discoveries to total mineral wealth are highlighted. Then, the essential but too often neglected linkage between the makeup of potential wealth and its actual realization is analysed. The impact of taxation and the role of exploration are crucial in this regard. Finally, the ingredients of exploration success, prerequisites for realizing the mineral wealth of nations, are examined.
