BEFORE an audience which included many notable members of the engineering profession, the John Fritz Medal was presented to Senator Guglielmo Marconi on July 6, 1922, in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building, in New York. The medal was awarded for achievements in the development of wireless telegraphy, but all of the speakers emphasized the inventor's service to mankind, in saving life at sea, especially, as well as his remarkable scientific attainments. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE JOHN FRITZ MEDAL The John Fritz Medal is presented from time to time for notable achievements in applied science, as a memorial to the engineer and metallurgist whose name it bears, one of the charter members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. The medal fund, contributed by friends of Mr. Fritz, is administered by representatives of the four national engineering societies. Seventeen awards have been made to men of eminent distinction in the various branches of the profession of engineering, whose names are more familiar to the civilized world than are the names of most of the presidents of the United States. Four of the medallists were present on the evening of July 6: Dr. Elihu Thomson, the dean of the electrical engineers, General Goethals, Orville Wright, and J: Waldo Smith, who developed the New York City water supply, system. In opening the meeting, Dr. Comfort A. Adams, president of the Board of Award, said in part: The profession of engineering knows no national boundaries. That the engineers of this country sense this fact deeply is evi-denced by the absence of any limitations as to nationality in the award of the John Fritz Medal. The engineer is seeking for the truth wherever it may be found, and it frequently happens that the most helpful sugges-tions for the solution of a particular problem are the results of the work of men of other nationalities on the other side of the world, whom we have never seen. Thus through this long range interchange of information and of ideas, there has grown up a feeling of real kinship among the engineers of the civilized world, a sense of interdependence and of the need and value of cooperation, in wide contrast with the all too prevalent sense of conflicting interests, of racial and national antagonisms of bitterness and misunderstanding. We often think of the nations of the earth as separated by walls or barriers, of various kinds and of various heights. Some of these are the natural results of evolution, for example, differences of language, customs and traditions; while others are more artificial, being maintained by law and dictated by fear, greed, and shortsightedness or ignorance. There is deep conviction that the degree in which we can abolish these barriers is a true measure of our progress towards real civilization, and that the destruction of these barriers is the only method of attaining that world-wide peace for which every

The Permian Basin as it appears in the title of this article refers to three rather widely separated areas of production. It includes what are commonly known as the "Panhandle" fields of the northwest part of Texas; the West Texas fields, in the southwest part of Texas; and the New Mexico fields, in the southeast corner of New Mexico. These three areas are all included in a single province and produce the majority of their oil from limestones or dolomites of Permian age. The manner of accumulation of oil in the three areas is somewhat diverse. In the Panhandle, production is found on the flanks of an enormous structural ridge, the core of which is granite. In southwest Texas and New Mexico oil is produced from both gentle and steep folds and from lenticular areas of porosity. Production in Texas During 1927 Texas produced a total of 216,306,000 bbl. of oil of which the Permian Basin contributed 89,797,000 bbl., or 42 per cent. During 1928, Texas produced 255,021,000 bbl. of oil of which the Permian Basin contributed 145,955,000 bbl., or 57 per cent. The increase in total production is entirely due to the West Texas fields. All other districts in Texas declined during the year while the west Texas fields registered an increase of more than 71,000,000 bbl. West Texas daily average production increased from 260,752 bbl, at the beginning of 1928 to a maximum of 406,318 bbl. per day the first week in May. Due to prora-tion agreements, the production was held at a fairly constant level around 340,000 bbl. during the remainder of the year, having 345,660 bbl. the last week in December. Daily average production of the Panhandle fields decreased from 80,178 bbl. at the beginning of the year to 59,025 bbl. at the close of the year. The combined daily average production of the Panhandle and West Texas fields at the beginning of the year was 341,138 bbl. and at the close of the year was 405,408 barrels. The introduction of the scintillation counter into field use for gamma-ray well logging has provided a new tool with special utility for the deternzination of natural radioactivity of sediments. Previous subsurface gamma-ray measurements have indicated only the total amount of radioactivity of the sediments. With the scintillation counter, the relative amounts of the elements which emit gamma radiation can be determined. Sediments logged included 35 zones in wells located in the Teras Gulf Coast, East Texas, and West Teras. Although the data obtained from measurements made to date are not sufficient to evaluate the possibilities of spectral logging, it appears likely that spectral measurements will yield information of geologic value. INTRODUCTION Although variations in the natural radioactivity of sediments were recognized as early as 1909,1 the appli- cation of such variations to borehole logging was not made until almost 30 years later. A group of Russian workers in the early 1930's were successful in making crude measurements of natural gamma activity in an oil well borehole. The first practical gamma-ray logging system was developed by Howell and Frosch2 in 1939. Induced radioactivity, or neutron, logging appeared soon after the introduction of gamma-ray logging. After early work had demonstrated the potentialities of radioactivity logging, development of sensitive and stable logging equipment for field use followed, so that neutron and natural gamma logs are now run routinely and have proved to be extremely valuable in characterizing subsurface formations. Even though tremendous strides have been made in developing radioactivity logging, it is apparent that the ultimate in the method of logging has not been reached, for, until very recently1 in none of the commercially available logging systems has advantage been taken of the fact that gamma radiation is composed of a spectrum of rays, each ray having a distinct and characteristic energy. An individual gamma ray originates in a single element and has energy determined by the element. The inten- sity of radiation, or number of rays emitted from unit volume in unit time, is determined by the concentration of the element. If it were possible to sort out these gamma rays and assign them to their parent elements, thereby essentially analyzing for the elements, a wealth of new information descriptive of formation material and fluid content would be at hand. For example, if in natural gamma logging, the gammas due to potassium and to the thorium and uranium series were measured individually, data would thus be available on the concentrations of each of the three elements, adding materially to the information content of the log. In contrast, conventional gamma logs measure only a quantity proportional to the combined concentrations of uranium, thorium, and potassium. The naturally radioactive elements occur in sediments in concentrations dependent on source material of the sediment, and through their chemical characteristics, on conditions of deposition,' so that the individual concentrations may be diagnostic for particular formations. These concentrations, particularly if measured in situ, could lead to a powerful tool for correlation and for reflecting environmental conditions under which sedimentation took place. THE Mufulira mine in Northern Rhodesia is 13° south of the Equator and at an altitude of 4100 ft above sea level. The concentrator was planned in 1930 to treat about 10,000 tons of ore per day, but before construction work had gone very far the size of the plant was reduced to 1500 tons daily capacity. Then just as the construction was finished in December 1931, the price of copper did not warrant the commencement of operations and it was not until October 1933 that the mine re-opened. Extensions have been made to the plant in 1034, 1935, 1936 1937, 1940 and finally in 1945. The capacity of the plant when the 1945 extension is completed will be 9500 short tons per day. The various extensions have been carried out with the minimum confusion and with great skill on the part of the designers and the erection engineers. In dealing with the plant in this paper it is proposed to give an outline of the present practice and only to refer to past practice when it is considered of particular interest. ORE TREATED The ore consists of fine grained highly siliceous, felspathic and argillaceous quartzites, the latter containing graphitic carbon and locally termed graywacke. These rocks are considerably altered near the surface and on the fringes of the ore body. Despite extensive efforts at mixing, both underground and in the crushing plant, many sudden changes of ore take place in the mill feed. The minerals are chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite with relatively unimportant amounts of malachite, native copper, azurite, covellite and chrysocolla. Gold is present at about 1 oz to a thousand tons, and silver at about 2 dwt. per ton. With increasing depth the nonsulphide content or, as commonly termed locally, the oxide content of the ore is decreasing and is now less than 0.25 pct against a high of 0.77 pct. CRUSHING OPERATIONS The first stage of crushing is done underground where the oversize from 12-in. grizzleys is fed to a 56 X 72-in. jaw crusher. At the Selkirk shaft two 10-ton skips deliver the run of mine ore at a rate of 450 tons per hour to the 400-ton capacity shaft bins. One 6 ft wide Ross chain feeder and one locally made air-operated finger feeder feed the two 30-in. McCully crushers. Ahead of each crusher is a 6 X 9-ft spring grizzley spaced at 5 in. on a 35° slope. Neither the Ross chain feeder nor the finger feeder is entirely satisfactory and for the wet, muddy and sticky ore that has to be handled it is planned to replace these with two 6-ft wide apron pan feeders. A cellular precipitation reaction in which cells consisting of an Ni3Ti (DO24) phase and austenite are formed has been studied in an austenitic Fe-30 Ni-6 Ti alloy. The variation of the growth rate and interlamellar spacing of the Ni3Ti cells with temperature has been determined m the range 400" to 975°C; the interlamellar spacing is proportional to the degree of undercooling; the growth rate can be expressed by an equation of the form G = K?T)2 exp(-Q/RT). The habit of the Ni3Ti lamellae is (001)Ni3Ti (111)y;[010]Ni3T2 [010]y. An almost perfectly coherent interface is formed between Ni3Ti lamellae with this orientation rela -tionship and the intervening austenite. This first Ni3Ti cellular product is subsequently consumed by a second cellular reaction of much coarser spacing. CELLULAR precipitation reactions have been studied in copper-base,1,2 Au-Ni,3 pb-sn,4 and iron-base ferritic5,6 solid solutions, and this mode of precipitation has been treated theoretically by smith," Turnbull,8,9 cahn,10 and more recently by bohm.11 In the case of substitutional austenitic iron-base alloys little or no data are available, Cellular precipitation reactions are well known in austenitic nickel-base alloys12,13 but usually these reactions do not proceed to completion because of general precipitation occurring in the matrix, and they have not been studied in detail. Precipitation from an austenitic Fe-30 Ni-6 Ti alloy was studied as part of a larger investigation of the mechanisms of precipitation from substitutional iron-base alloys. This alloy, austenitic at high temperatures, decomposes at lower temperatures by a double cellular precipitation reaction. The first decomposition product consists of alternate lamellae of an Ni3Ti(DO24) phase and austenite. The reaction proceeds to completion, consuming all of the original austenite. This first cellular product is subsequently consumed by a second cellular reaction of much coarser spacing. The first cellular reaction was studied in detail by light and electron microscopy, hardness measurements, and by X-ray and electron diffraction. Interlamellar spacings and growth rates were measured during isothermal aging in the range 400" to 975°C. The orientation relationship between the Ni3Ti and austenite lamellae was determined and indicates that an almost perfectly coherent interface exists between the two phases. This first Ni3Ti cellular reaction is of particular interest because it occurs over such a wide temperature interval. This allows cellular growth rates and interlamellar spacing data to be obtained for much larger degrees of undercooling than reported hitherto. ON the 6th of February 1684, Dr. Martin Lister mentioned at a meeting of the Royal Society1 that "brass is magnetical," and promised to give an account of that assertion at some other time. He repeated his promise but never fulfilled it, and it was left for William Arderon2 to show, in 1958, that brass could be made magnetic by hammering and that it would retain polarity after magnetizing. Twenty-seven years later Cavallo3,4 examined the matter in great detail. Working with cast calamine brass, he showed that it could be made magnetic by hammering and nonmagnetic by subsequent annealing at a red heat. He found that annealing at a very high temperature caused the samples to lose their magnetic quality permanently, even after subsequent cold-working, but that remelting and cold-working restored it. He encountered some samples of brass that could not be rendered magnetic by any treatment. Experiments in which these were remelted with iron additions gave negative results, and Cavallo concluded that iron impurity was not the cause of the magnetism. He worked with 50-grain (3-gram) samples melted under the blowpipe, hence cooled very quickly. Bennet5 made whole crucible charges from copper and zinc, and found the resulting brass ingots to be magnetic only when iron had been added and then only after cold-working. All these observations applied to material in the cast condition, in which coring would produce a continuous spectrum of composition and cooling would result in varying degrees of precipitation. This knowledge of the subject seems to have been forgotten in the nineteenth century. The older brass was made by the calamine process and frequently contained iron in amounts of 0.5 per cent or more, absorbed from the impure ore with which the copper and charcoal were heated in making the brass. When metallic zinc became available in commercial quantities, calamine brass gradually disappeared, and with it the knowledge of its curious magnetic properties. Only when sensitive apparatus replaced the compass needle of the earlier investigators could the effects be detected in relatively pure metal. The effect of cold-working in inducing ferromagnetism was rediscovered by Bitters in 1930 in a sample of impure copper, and this was confirmed by Lowance and Constant,9 Honda and Shimizu, 10,11 and others. In the same year, Tammann and Oelsen12 showed that copper-rich copper-iron alloys after certain heat-treatments could be rendered ferromagnetic or made more strongly ferromagnetic by cold-rolling. Kussman and Seeman13 showed that the change of susceptibility of relatively pure copper on cold-working was associated with the iron content, and concluded that actual precipitation of iron was caused by cold-working, which is a satisfactory theory until one considers the improbably high rate of diffusion that this would involve. The San Manuel property is in town&ips 8S and 9S, range 16E, Gila and salt River Base and Meridan, State of Arizona. This area is in the Old Hat mining district, southern pinal county, and is about 31/25 miles southwest of the town of Mammoth on the San Pedro River And one mile south of the Mammoth mine at Tiger, Arizona, The property consists of over 150 contiguous lode claims. The old Hat district was prospected prior to the civil war, but there was little or no production until 1881.1 The chief producers have been the Mammoth and Mohawk mines, now consolidated and operating as the st. Anthony Mining and Development Co., Ltd. Production to 1936 was $5,200,000, of which 83 pet was gold.2 Since 1940 the production has been chiefly lead and zinc, and some molybdenum and vanadium. There are a few small properties in the vicinity that have produced very minor tonnages of copper ore. In the San Manuel group there are claims which have been held continuously from 1906 to the present time, and at least two churn-drill holes were put down on or near the outcrop in 1917. No logs for these holes are available, but it is assumed that the grade of copper encountered was not sufficient to encourage further exploration. A small amount of ore has been shipped from open cuts on the San Manuel outcrop area, but there is no record of the tonnage Or grade. It is estimated that not more than 50 tons were mined. These cuts, plus a few shallow shafts and some short adits indicate limited and unenthusiastic prospecting at San Manuel. In 1942, through the efforts of James M. Douglas, R. B. Giffin, Victor Erickson, and Henry W. Nichols, owners of the Sari Manuel group, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and War Production Board authorized the United States Geological Survey to investigate the property, and by their recommendation, the United States Bureau of Mines was authorized to put down a limited number of churn-drill holes. The Bureau of Mines carried On drilling from November 1943 to February 1945 Seventeen holes were drilled, varying from 305 to 1990 ft in depth. The property was brought to the attention of Magma Copper Co. in June 1944, and an option agreement was made with the Owners. Subsequently, a group of claims lying north of the original group and held by the Apex Lead Vanadium Mining Corp, and a group to the east held by the Quarelli family, were optioned. A drilling program was laid out to conform to the Bureau of Mines pattern, and drilling started in December 1944 Sari Manue1 Copper Corp. was incorporated September 1945, and has carried on the exploration program to the present time. THE present investigation was planned as a survey of the lead-rich portion of the ternary lead-antimony-silver system by thermal analysis. Since, however, a rigorous application of the conventional thermal analytical method is time consuming, an attempt was made to speed up the investigation by reducing the time required for a single thermal analysis. This was done by increasing the rate of cooling to 12° to 18°C. per minute, since such a rate does not permit even an approach to equilibrium conditions, the melt was stirred vigorously by a stirrer operating at the high rate of 665 r.p.m. This proved to be effective in obtaining cooling curves with distinct points of arrest and of excellent reproducibility, which satisfactorily compare with those obtained at a rate of 1" to 2°C. per min. with or without slow stirring (Fig. I). By this method the lead-rich end of the lead-alltimony system and a series of ternary alloys in sections parallel to the lead-antimony side of the ternary system were investigated and it was observed that the two branches of the liquidus curve of the binary alloys did not intersect at the euteotic temperature. An equivalent effect mas observed in the ternary system. The eutectic temperature of the binary lead-antimony system was found to be 252.0°C., which confirms the recent in- vestigation by Pellini and Rhines,1 who determined the eutectic temperature to be 2 51.5°C. The observation that the curves of primarY crystallization of the lead-antimony system do not intersect at the eutectic temperature was previously made by Dean.2 Dean explains the phenomeilon by assuming the existence of a compound Sb4pb. He felt that supercooling was not the cause of the phenomena because he was unable to influence them by inoculation. The X-ray investigation by Solomon and Morris-Jones,3 the metallographic investigations by Stead,4 Charpy,5 Gontermann,6 and Dean, Zickrick and Nix,7 and the numerous investigations of physical properties, definitely disprove the occurrence of any compound. The work of Dean was not confirmed by Broniewski and Sliwoski,8 whose experiments did not show any irregularity and who report a eutectic composition of 13 per cent antimony and a eutectic temperature Of 2500 to 252°C. at a rate Of coo1ing of about 6°C. Per min. Abell Redlich and Adler9 then report a eutectic composition of 12.1 per cent upon reviewing the previous publications and adding a few of their own cooling curves. In 1934 Quadrat and Jiriste10 found from careful analyses of the bottom portion of slowly cooled hypereutectic melts that the eutectic only 11 .4 to 11.5 per cent antimany. In the mechanical twinning of magnesium on the {1012} planes the crystal-lographic deformation is such that, in the direction of the hexagonal axis [0001], twinning is possible only undef tension stress, while in the directions perpendicular to the hexagonal axis, twinning is possible only under applied compression. Thus in extruded magnesium and magnesium alloys where the extruded textures are best described as either [1010] or [1120] fibers,' the basal planes are all nearly parallel to the extrusion axis and such material is susceptible to ( 1or2 ) twinning by compression in the direction of the extrusion axis. In order to explain the results of cyclic stressing in alternate tension and compression upon the tangent elastic modulus in such material, Dorn and Thomsen2 have postulated that, following twinning under applied compression, a retwinning or un-twinning occurs as a result of residual microtensile stresses immediately upon removal of the applied compressive force. Recently, Carapella and Shaw4 have used this supposition of untwinning in magnesium in discussing their results on indentation hardness and on cold drawing of MI sheet. In trying to confirm this hypothesis by suitable direct experiments, the authors have been unsuccessful in detecting any evidence whatsoever that untwinning follows the release of applied compression and are forced to conclude that this hypothesis is improbable or, at least, that the quantity of material involved is small. For the experiments, small cylindrical specimens 0.040-in. diam. X 0.120- to 0.140-in. long were etched from 0.0625-in. extruded rod. The ends of the specimens were accurately faced off parallel in a jeweler's lathe. The compression jig was simply an ordinary set of micrometer calipers with an anvil interposed between the spindle and the specimen. The anvil was free to move axially but restrained from rotating so that the rotation of the spindle would not introduce a twisting stress on the specimen. With this arrangement the compressive strains could be estimated to 0.0001 in. and X ray pinhole photographs could be taken with or without load as required. Fig I is the pattern of an uncompressed specimen of AZ3I alloy, showing the approximate [1010] extrusion fiber. The X ray beam is normal to the extrusion axis; in this position it is particularly sensitive in detecting twinning if one directs his attention to the diffraction ring from the basal plane. Since twinning on (1072 planes produced an 86" reorientation of the crystal lattice, the original basal reflections occur at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions while the (0002) reflections from any twinned material will occur at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions. Fig 2 shows the same specimen compressed 3.0 pct, photographed while still under load. This strain has been just enough to produce a detectible amount of twinning and the sensitivity is roughly indicated by the fact that no alterations were produced in the intensities or maxima of the other diffraction rings. THE present investigation was planned as a survey of the lead-rich portion of the ternary lead-antimony-silver system by thermal analysis. Since, however, a rigorous application of the conventional thermal analytical method is time consuming, an attempt was made to speed up the investigation by reducing the time required for a single thermal analysis. This was done by increasing the rate of cooling to 12° to 18°C. per minute, since such a rate does not permit even an approach to equilibrium conditions, the melt was stirred vigorously by a stirrer operating at the high rate of 665 r.p.m. This proved to be effective in obtaining cooling curves with distinct points of arrest and of excellent reproducibility, which satisfactorily compare with those obtained at a rate of 1" to 2°C. per min. with or without slow stirring (Fig. I). By this method the lead-rich end of the lead-alltimony system and a series of ternary alloys in sections parallel to the lead-antimony side of the ternary system were investigated and it was observed that the two branches of the liquidus curve of the binary alloys did not intersect at the euteotic temperature. An equivalent effect mas observed in the ternary system. The eutectic temperature of the binary lead-antimony system was found to be 252.0°C., which confirms the recent in- vestigation by Pellini and Rhines,1 who determined the eutectic temperature to be 2 51.5°C. The observation that the curves of primarY crystallization of the lead-antimony system do not intersect at the eutectic temperature was previously made by Dean.2 Dean explains the phenomeilon by assuming the existence of a compound Sb4pb. He felt that supercooling was not the cause of the phenomena because he was unable to influence them by inoculation. The X-ray investigation by Solomon and Morris-Jones,3 the metallographic investigations by Stead,4 Charpy,5 Gontermann,6 and Dean, Zickrick and Nix,7 and the numerous investigations of physical properties, definitely disprove the occurrence of any compound. The work of Dean was not confirmed by Broniewski and Sliwoski,8 whose experiments did not show any irregularity and who report a eutectic composition of 13 per cent antimony and a eutectic temperature Of 2500 to 252°C. at a rate Of coo1ing of about 6°C. Per min. Abell Redlich and Adler9 then report a eutectic composition of 12.1 per cent upon reviewing the previous publications and adding a few of their own cooling curves. In 1934 Quadrat and Jiriste10 found from careful analyses of the bottom portion of slowly cooled hypereutectic melts that the eutectic only 11 .4 to 11.5 per cent antimany. At 500°C (932°F) the range of y' iron nitride is from 5. 77 + 0.03 wt pct N (in coexistence with a iron) to 5.88 * 0.03 wt pct N (in coexistence with E iron nitride). Stoichiometric "Fe,N" (5.900 wt pct N) is near the upper extreme of possible compositiom. The depe-dence of nitrogen activity (expressed as pnh,/Ph,) on nitrogen content is described satisfactorily by a "Langmuir" isotherm: At even the highest nitrogen concentrations, less than 0.18 pct of' the nitrogen atoms present are impositions of disorder. Past investigations1-4 of the Fe-N system have left only details of the thermodynamic behavior of the y' nitride, "Fe,N9', to be studied. The present investigation was made to establish more precisely than hitherto the limits of composition and the relation between composition and nitrogen activity at 500°C. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The compositions of nitrides in equilibrium with various NH, + Hz mixtures at 500°C were determined from the weights gained by 0.02-in.-thick (4.0 to 4.5 g) strips of purified iron* when the nitrides were formed A description of the gas generation and furnace system has been published.5 Cracking and blistering during conversion of the original solid iron at 550°C injected considerable porosity into the strips without causing their disintegration. The time for complete conversion was significantly lowered by periodically reducing partly nitrided specimens in hydrogen and then reexposing them to the nitriding gas. Gas mixtures producing single-phase were used in the equilibrations at 500°C. Equilibrium was regarded as existing when the specimen weight was not detect-ably affected by further exposure to the same conditions. The gas compositions and nitrogen activities at which y' transformed to a iron (lower activity limit) and to E iron nitride (upper activity limit) were redetermined during the investigation. A specimen was equilibrated in an NH, + Hz mixture at 500°C and then exposed to a s1ightly different gas. When equi- librium had been reestablished the gas was again changed slightly. At each stage of this repeated process, while the specimen was reacting with the gas, the variation of its weight with time was observed. The onset of phase transition was marked by an abrupt change in the amount and rate of weight gain or loss. The specimens were weighed outside the furnace, in air and at room temperature, on a balance with 0.05 mg precision. When it was found that the specimens were oxidizing at a significant rate during the weighing, a series of timed weighings was made with each specimen, starting 1 min after its exposure to air. RESULTS AND ANALYSIS The gain in specimen weight from oxidation during weighing was linear in the logarithm of time between 1 min and about 2 hr, Fig. 1, later becoming linear in the cube root of time. The Mufulira mine in Northern Rhodesia is 13° south of the Equator and at an altitude of 4100 ft above sea level. The concentrator was planned in 1930 to treat about 10,000 tons of ore per day, but before construction work had gone very far the size of the plant was reduced to 1500 tons daily capacity. Then just as the construction was finished in December 1931, the price of copper did not warrant the commencement of operations and it was not until October 1933 that the mine re-opened. Extensions have been made to the plant in 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1940 and finally in 1945. The capacity of the plant when the 1945 extension is completed will be 9500 short tons per day. The various extensions have been carried out with the minimum confusion and with great skill on the part of the designers and the erection engineers. In dealing with the plant in this paper it is proposed to give an outline of the present practice and only to refer to past practice when it is considered of particular interest. Ore Treated The ore consists of fine grained highly siliceous, felspathic and argillaceous quartz- ites, the latter containing graphitic carbon and locally termed graywacke. These rocks are considerably altered near the surface and on the fringes of the ore body. Despite extensive efforts at mixing, both underground and in the crushing plant, many sudden changes of ore take place in the mill feed. The minerals are chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite with relatively unimportant amounts of malachite, native copper, azurite, covellite and chrysocolla. Gold is present at about I oz to a thousand tons, and silver at about 2 dwt. per ton. With increasing depth the nonsulphide content or,, as commonly termed locally, the oxide content of the ore is decreasing and is now less than 0.25 pct against a high of 0.77 pct- Crushing Operations The first stage of crushing is done under. ground where the oversize from I2-in. grizzlies is fed to a 56 X 72-in. jaw crusher. At the Selkirk shaft two 10-ton skips deliver the run of mine ore at a rate of 450 tons per hour to the 400-ton capacity shaft bins. One 6 ft wide Ross chain feeder and one locally made air-operated finger feeder feed the two 30-in. McCully crushers. Ahead of each crusher is a 6 X 9-ft spring grizzley spaced at 5 in. on a 35O slope. Neither the Ross chain feeder nor the finger feeder is entirely satisfactory and for the wet, muddy and sticky ore that has to be handled it is planned to replace these with two 6-ft wide apron pan feeders. Drilling an oil well or most other types of drilling or coring is no longer a simple and uncomplicated operation. Drilling today at depths which exceed 9144 m (30,000 ft) is hazardous and requires personnel with long and varied experience in drilling. It also requires extensive experience and knowledge in the use of materials which are added to the drilling fluid or "mud," more often than not materials utilizing an industrial mineral. The drilling fluid can vary from a simple mixture of water and "mud" to a very sophisticated, scientifically compounded drilling fluid. Industrial Minerals Used in Drilling Fluids Industrial minerals which are commonly used in oilwell drilling and completion are listed in Table 1. The most important minerals, determined by sales, are bentonite and barite. The other minerals listed are either used to achieve a specific purpose or are used regularly but in limited quantities. The main suppliers of drilling fluids internationally are Magcobar Div., Dresser Industries, Inc.; Baroid Div., National Lead Co.; IMC Drilling Mud Co., (a subsidiary of international Minerals and Chemicals Corp. and Halliburton Co.); and Milchem, a division of Baker Industries. Most of the industrial minerals are found in North America, with barite mines and processing plants located in Nevada, Arkansas, Missouri, and Arizona, and bentonite mines near Graybull, WY. Other mines, such as those in Nova Scotia, are capable of shipping to South America and to the European and Middle East countries. Most of the materials processed by any of the suppliers must conform to specifications set by the American Petroleum Institute (API) or the Oil Companies Material Organization (OCMA). These specifications provide for uniform physical and chemical properties of the materials to be sold on the open market. Function of Drilling Fluids In the early days of rotary drilling, the primary function of drilling fluids was to bring the cuttings from the bottom of the hole to the surface. Today it is recognized the drilling fluid has at least ten important functions: 1) To remove the cuttings from the bottom of the hole and carry them to the surface. 2) To cool and lubricate the drill string and drill bit. 3) To build an impermeable cake on the wall of the hole. 4) To control subsurface pressures. 5) To hold cuttings and weight material in suspension when circulation is interrupted. 6) To release sand and cuttings at the surface. 7) To support part of the weight of drill pipe and casing. 8) To reduce to a minimum any adverse effects upon the formation adjacent to the hole. 9) To insure maximum information about the formation penetrated. 10) To transmit hydraulic horsepower to the bit. In order to accomplish some or all of these functions while penetrating formations of various characteristics, several types of drilling fluids systems have been designed. At all business meetings of the Institute the President, or, in his absence, the First Vice-President, or, in the absence of both of them, any other Vice-President or Director, chosen by the meeting, shall preside. At all other meetings of the Institute the President, or, in his absence, one of the Vice-presidents shall preside. If none of these be present the meeting shall elect a Chairman. The President shall do and perform such other duties as may from time to time be assigned to him by resolution of the Board of Directors of the Institute. II. ORDER OF BUSINESS. At each business meeting of the Institute the order of business shall be as follows: 1. Reading of minutes of preceding meeting. 2. Report of the President. 3. Report of the Treasurer. 4. Report of the Secretary. 5. Election of Directors. 6. Reports of Standing Committees. 7. Reports of Special Committees. 8. Special Orders. 9. Miscellaneous business. This order of business may be changed at any meeting, by a vote of a majority of the Members and Associates present. At all sessions of the Institute, other than business meetings, the order of proceedings and the time of adjournment shall rest in the discretion of the presiding officer. III. SECRETARY OF THE INSTITUTE. The Secretary shall keep a record of the proceedings of all the meetings of the Institute, He shall be custodian of the corporate seal, of the minute books and of all the legal documents belonging to the Institute. He shall have charge on behalf of the Institute of all correspondence. He shall notify all Officers and Directors and all members of committees of their election and appointment; shall issue notices of all meetings of the Board, and of the annual and other business meetings of the Institute; and shall, in calling special meetings of the Directors, specify the objects of such meetings. He shall act as clerk at all the meetings of the Board of Directors and at all meetings of the Institute. The Secretary shall be custodian of all technical or scientific papers submitted to the Institute for its consideration and shall have general charge and supervision of the editing and proof-reading of all material published by the Institute, and of the distribution thereof. The Secretary shall be the custodian of all back numbers of the Transactions and other publications of the Institute. There shall be kept under his direction an account in ledger form of all such back numbers. He shall on the first day of January of each year submit to the Library Committee a statement of the number of copies of Transactions, magazines and other publications printed during the preceding year, giving the number distributed and remaining undistributed; also a statement covering additions to and withdrawals from the total stock of Institute publications, with the number remaining on hand at date of statement.
