The oil industry in Kentucky during the year 1937 shows some improvement over that of 1936, although not to as marked a degree as 1936 over 1935. Oil in Eastern Kentucky In eastern Kentucky more than 150 new inside wells were completed in the pools of Estill, Powell and Lee Counties. Also, a number of wells were completed to be used as intake wells in repressuring operations. Repressuring is proving more successful in this area than was expected, as the producing formation was the Corniferous limestone. However, when the repressuring work was started, cores taken of this formation showed that the oil in the second and third pays was from a true sand, only the first pay in the top being a sandy lime formation. In the Weir sand fields of Magoffin, Johnson and Lawrence Counties, continued repressuring operations caused an increase in the quantity of oil. These operations and the completion of 20 new wells in the Maxon sand and the Big lime (Mississippian) in Martin and Floyd Counties produced an increase in the oil production from eastern Kentucky of 100,000 bbl. over that of 1936. As an illustration of what may yet be done in the fields of eastern Kentucky, one repressuring operation involving four oil wells and one pressure well produced an increase in production, or an additional recovery of 7200 bbl. of oil during the year. This amounts to a recovery of 2000 per acre for the 3.6 acres involved. In other fields of eastern Kentucky, as in the Corniferous pools of Estill, Powell and Lee Counties, increases in the runs are noted as follows: In the area of the Estill County pool from which the oil passes through the Revena pumping station, the production in 1935 was 88,175 bbl.; in 1936, was 102,849 bbl.; and in 1937 was 107,704 bbl. Kinking is an important deformation phenomenon in poly crystalline a zirconium. The crjlstallo-gvaphic features of the most important form of kinking have been determined with the aid of twins formed at 77°K in grains previously kinked at high temperatures. It has been .found that the kink-band boundaries correspond to walls of edge dislocations with (1150) Burgers vectors and dislocation lines parallel to (1070). The present observations imply that basal slip is an important secondary-slip mode in polycrystalline zirconium. Previous single-crystal studies13 did not veveal this mode Other evidelzc.e for (0002)(1120) slip is also presented. ThE first studies of kinking in hexagonal metals were made by orowan,1 using single-crystal cadmium wires. He suggested that this was a new de- formation mode in metals, different from ordinary glide or twinning. Next, Hess and Barrett2 studied zinc-crystal rods in compression, and were able to offer an explanation of the phenomenon described by Orowan. They concluded that kinks required no new deformation mechanism and were a special form of deformation band that developed gradually and solely from basal glide. Similar kink bands were then observed by Washburn and parker3 on zinc crystals deformed in tension at low stresses and high temperatures. In titaniun,4 kink bands associated with {1010}<1120> prism slip have been observed in coarse-grained specimens. Magnesium5 and rhenium6 have also been observed to kink in conjunction with their basal- and {1010} prism-slip systems, respectively. Yttrium has (1010) as a predominant slip plane, but no observations of kink bands were reported.7 Since no previous investigations of kink bands in zirconium have apparently been made, this study was proposed. Its aim was to determine the crys-tallographic features of a type of kink band frequently observed in polycrystalline zirconium. IT is generally recognized that "low temperatures" have a definite effect on the properties of metals and alloys. Furthermore, it is also generally understood that the effect is decidedly adverse. The possibility that the same low-temperature treatment might be employed for the purpose of improving certain properties of the .alloys has received less attention until recently, and the experimental and theoretical knowledge consequently is meager. The effect of low temperatures may be studied in two ways: by studying such properties as tensile strength, hardness, impact resistance, etc., at low temperature, and by studying the properties of alloys at room temperature after these alloys have been subjected to a low-temperature treatment. Even in the latter case, certain properties will differ materially from the same properties obtained on identical material but without cold treatment. In other words, subjecting alloys to cold treatment results in an irreversible change in mechanical properties. Changes of this character are usually indications of the appearance of a new phase or phases, and would be likely to occur in alloys which, either by virtue of their composition or by heat treatment, are retained at room temperature in a metastable condition. Consequently, studies of the effect of low temperatures logically should be conducted from the physicochemical point of view, since the results of such studies not only would furnish metallurgists with interesting theoretical data but would clearly indicate the classes of alloys that would hold promise of improvement, and, possibly, of new applications. As the present investigation deals with chromium and chromium-nickel alloys of iron of the stainless variety, it has been thought desirable to present the data concerning low-temperature properties of these alloys, available from the most recent and most comprehensive work of H: S. Reply to discussion of the paper of C. W. Washburne, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914 (Trans., xlviii, 687 to 694 (1914)). C. W. WASHBURNE, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*).-Professor Lane makes an interesting contribution to the study. of chloride waters, in saying that calcium chloride waters occur not only in the greenstones of the Lake Superior copper mines, but also in the interbedded -felsitic conglomerates and "in far-removed sandstones, e.g., near Whitefish lake, and Ontonagon, in the Michigan iron mines, and in the Storm King granite." Surely these are not connate waters preserved from the Algonkian sea, assuming that the Algonkian sediments are marine rather than continental. Finding the same type of water in the Storm King granite points rather toward an abyssal source. The possible connection of these waters with the magma of the greenstone is immaterial, although some basic calcic magma is the most probable source. It is to be expected that the ascending water of the region would be found not only in the greenstones, but in all the rocks which it could penetrate. The ascent of water of this kind along vertical passages, and the consequent addition of a common ion: to the circulating sedimentary salt solutions, would explain the precipitation and localization of the "giant, concretionary" salt plugs of the Gulf Coast, without making the ex-excessive demand for an improbable quantity of salt in the adjacent sediments that is required by the unmodified theory of Harris. With-out such a precipitating medium most of the dissolved sodium chloride would have been lost by passing on to the surface without precipitation. The base to which the chlorine ions were attached is immaterial, providing they were sufficiently concentrated, but the presence of the chlorides of calcium and magnesium in the solutions is indicated by the associated bodies of secondary dolomite.

A noticeable decrease in activity characterized the year 1938 in the West Texas area. The total number of wells completed dropped to 2045 for 19381 as compared with 2806 completions in 1937,l a decline of 27.12 per cent. This trend contrasts the sharp increase of 76.29 per cent in completions in 1937 over the 1936 total. Of 2045 well completions during 1938,&apos; 1788 were oil wellsll 16 were gas producers1 and 241 were listed as failures.&apos; During 1938 the ratio of dry holes drilled to oil-producing or gas-producing wells completed was one dry hole to each 7.48 oil wells, which compares with one dry hole drilled to each 7.477 oil wells in 1937. Nearly 200 wells drilled during 1938 in West Texas were either wildcat or partly wildcat wells, an increase of about 25 over the year 1937, when approximately 175 wells drilled were so classified. The 200 exploratory wells drilled represent about 10 per cent of the total number of wells completed. West Texas produced 71,257,541 bbl.1 of oil in 1938 as compared with 75,743,000 bb1.2 of oil in 1937, a decrease of 4,485,459 bbl., or a 5.92 per cent decline. By comparison, West Texas produced 22.36 per cent more oil in 1937 than during 1936. In December 1938, the 9247 producing oil wells in West Texas1 averaged 22.08 bbl. per day per well as compared with December 1937, when 7571 wells1 produced an average of 25.18 bbl. per day per well, or a decline in daily well average of 12.32 per cent. Discoveries No outstanding new fields were discovered in West Texas during 1938, in spite of continued, active wildcatting operations. Several new oil-producing areas were, found, however, the value of which is still unknown.

WHEN the new sulphide plant started to roll at Chuquicamata last July, we broached the matter of looking in on this historic event to Burr Wheeler, then executive vice president of Chile Exploration Co. (Chilex executive offices are housed with the parent company, Anaconda, at 25 Broadway which is 23 hours and 15 minutes closer to the AIME office than the mine, counting air and automobile travel). Mr. Wheeler was at Chuqui when they turned the first shovelful of earth, has an understandable pride and affection in the mine, and kindly offered to make all arrangements. As a guest of Chilex, physical exam, injections, police clearance, passport, and airline reservations on the crack Panagra airline are procured swiftly and almost painlessly. Winter clothes were advised by Mr. Wheeler and D. M. Dunbar, who is the former&apos;s assistant and a seasoned Chuqui-ite. Both of these gentlemen obviously prefer Chuqui climate, with 364 days of sunshine, 1 ½ -in. rainfall, rare atmosphere of 10,000 ft elevation, Christmas-time earthquakes, and howling winds through June and July to the vicissitudes of New York weather. Panagra&apos;s de luxe DC-6 noses in toward land at Antofagasta, Chile, the supply and embarkation port for Chuquicamata. The Coastal Range, completely barren of green, thrusts a spur far out into the Pacific creating a crescent-shaped and protected harbor at Antofagasta. Beach gives way to pampa, to hills, and the only variation in scenery is in topographic relief. Chilex&apos;s reception committee in the person of the alert and amiable Bob Condit, assistant port agent, takes care of everything: immigration, interviews by the local press, baggage, transportation, and introduction to Chilean cuisine. The drive up to Chuqui takes about three hours, on the only two lane highway in northern Chile; hard surfaced, with a few kilometers of repair work in progress. We were fortunate to make the trip with manager Charles Brinckerhoff, who arrived the same day at Antofagasta from the seat of government at Santiago where he goes frequently to keep in touch with the company&apos;s Santiago office.

The new potash refinery of Duval Sulphur & Potash Co. produced its first tonnage of muriate of potash in November 1951. Full capacity was attained in early 1952. Excellent extraction efficiency is being obtained by the process, which is basically froth flotation. System temperature control is practiced and has proved to be of great metallurgical value through high potassium recovery and low reagent cost.

Measuring The Economic Viability Of Resource Projects (A Western Surface Coal Project) The bankers approach to the analysis of a new "green fields" mining project is similar but different from the approach that the pining company might take. The purpose of this paper shall be to discuss the techniques that are used by mining companies and bankers as they try to measure the economic viability of mining projects. The analysis of these new projects (by both the mining companies and the banker) is based on a projected revenue stream and not on historical earnings or past perfomance because these projects are start up situations with no history to look to. The starting point in the analysis of these projections is the choice of the assumptions to be used in preparing these projections. After the assumptions have been determined and the projections are prepared then the projections are submitted to various tests in order to determine whether the project measures up to previously agreed upon minimum standards. In order to illustrate the analytical procedures used in evaluating a mineral project the writer has constructed a hypothetical case involving the development of a western surface coal mine (Property). The basic data in connection with this hypothetical new project is described in the next section of this paper. After the Description of the Project is a section which shows the type of analysis that a mining company might prepare in order to approach a bank for a loan and the final section illustrates the type of analysis that a bank might prepare in evaluating this loan request. Description Of The Project or Basic Data In Connection With Undeveloped Western Surface Coal Property An independent mining/geological Consultant&apos;s report has been completed on the Property which confirms that the Property contains 175 million tons of economically recoverable coal subdivided into the following reserve categories in accordance with U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey definitions: Measured or Proven 90,000,000 Indicated or Probable 50,000,000 Inferred or Possible 35,000,000 The owners of the reserves have chosen to drill up those reserves that are nearest to the subcrop and have not spent as much time on those portions of the Property which are on the fringes of the deposit where the overburden is thicker because the stripping ratio and hence the operating costs and capital requirements are higher down dip. The proven reserves are based on an average thickness of 80 feet, of which a mining recovery of 90% is projected. The overburden thickness varies from 0&apos; to 280&apos; with an average thickness of 127&apos;. The overburden consists mainly of scoria, sandstone, gravel, shale and silty clay. 134 holes were cored (and analysis done on five foot increments) in the measured reserve on the following spacing: 100 foot centers to define the burn line; 1,320 foot centers to define the early mining areas; 2,640 foot centers to identify the later mining areas.

In the early fall of 1925, the writer was conducting, in the Ledoux and Co. laboratory, New York, experiments directed toward ascertaining the effect on its impurity content when cathode copper was subjected to a current of various gases at an elevated temperature below the melting point. The apparatus consisted of a vertical I-in. dia. silica tube about 12 in. long, heated on the outside. The cathodes were broken to pass 3/8-in. mesh, and a current of various different gases was passed up through a 4-in. long column of these loose cathode particles in the vertical tube furnace. Temperature was maintained to 1500º to 1600ºF. and the gas treatments lasted from 3 to 6 hr. The writer observed that whenever reducing gas (H2 or CO) was used, these cathode particles stuck together at points of contact with each other. The cohesion was so marked and tenacious that an examination was made of the fractured surfaces, when cathode particles were broken from the cluster. Crystal growth was always found to have taken place across the surfaces where separate particles were in contact, but only after all oxides, sulphates, etc., had been completely removed. The idea of a possible new process was then conceived and was disclosed to A. M. Smoot (V. P. Ledoux and Co.) with intent to obtain his views. The first conception as given Smoot was "to gas-clean broken cathodes, put them in an extrusion press, solidify and extrude them at around 1500ºF." Smoot&apos;s reaction, after a few moments considera- tion, was, "It looks perfectly all right to me.&apos;&apos; The writer and his assistants, W. H. Osborn and H. H. Stout, Jr., after conferring as to ways and means, decided to go ahead with preliminary laboratory experiments, which, it was thought, would move the new process from the possible to the probable. This program followed a course indicated by three basic considerations: 1. Since brittle cathodes were often unintentionally produced, it seemed probable that the laws controlling this type of deposition could be ascertained. 2. We had already proved the gas-cleaning feature. 3. There remained to prove: whether a sound, homogeneous metal billet could be produced with crystal growth established over the entire surface of each individual particle in the billet; and, if so, what would be the physical properties? Osborn arranged with Columbia University for conducting experiments in its research laboratory to prove or disprove the third item; Columbia assigned C. A. Phillipi, Jr. to assist in the project. A press with a cylinder 2 in. high and of I-in. dia. was used. It was surrouilded and heated by a resistance coil 01 Nichrome wire. Broken tough cathodes were used. Experimental Procedure The first run took place March 18, 1926. The resistance wire gave out when temperature of 1000ºF. was obtained. &apos;This paper discusses a method and apparatus for determining the dip of formations traversed by a drill hole, by means of electrical measurements in the hole. The process consists in recording the Spontaneous Potentials present along three oriented generatrices in the hole. By comparison of the three curves thus obtained, after application of a correction factor to compensate for any deviations of the hole, the dip angle and the dip direction are determined. Excellent accuracy is obtained for dip angles over 10°. Because the method is simp1e and the apparatus rugged, the measurements are rapid and reliable; consequently, they can be made at all the levels that are of interest at any time after the well has been drilled. Mechanical cores are not needed to evaluate the dips. A convenient, time-saving procedure is to perform the dipmeter survey at the time the electrical log is taken, using for both operations the same cable and truck. Actual examples of results obtained in wells of the Gulf Coast area are given. Introduction The problem of determining the angle and direction of the dip of the strata traversed by a drill hole has practical interest, and sometimes vital importance, which need not be emphasized to the oil industry. The need for that type of information has existed ever since wells have been drilled. Certainly it has not subsided, in spite of the numerous inventions and improvements made in other fields of the art of drill-hole exploration. The few examples given in this paper are but illustrative of this fact. In the past, methods have been devised, and used, to solve this problem, but generally they have met with limited success, possibly because they failed more or less to answer the requirements of a modern age for fast yet accurate measurements. If accurate, the results were obtained at the cost of very tedious and lengthy operations. The new S. P.* dipmeter service offered to the oil industry is the result of exhaustive and in this particular field. In 1032 a dipmeter and electromagnetic teleclinom-eter service was made available. The apparatus employed then was of a rather delicate and costly construction, and the measurements had to be made with precautions sometimes difficult to secure on the rig. Although the information given by the electromagnetic dipmeter was limited to the direction of the dip, very interesting results were obtained in California, Trinidad, Venezuela, Rumania and, most notably, in the Netherlands East Indies.+ Apparatus The S. P. dipmeter surveys present none of the drawbacks mentioned above. The apparatus is rugged and free from constructional complications, therefore well adapted to field use. Single crystals of tungsten grown from powder -metallurgy swaged rod by high-temperative annealing were deformed in tetzsion at temperatures from 2500 to 5000 OF. Orientation of specittzen tensile axis, strained ratrix, and defortnation bands was determined optically by reflections from {110} etch pits. Slip traces meve analyzed and slip directiorz determined. Results indicate that {110}(111) , {112){111}. and {123}{111} type slip occur in tungsten over the terpe,atuve rutge investigated. Slip is orientation-dependent occuvring on tCuzt cowzbitzation oj slip plane and direction which has the highest critical resolved shear stvess. Overshooting appears to be a general occurrence between 2500&apos; and 5000°F. Dejornatiotz bands show rotation in a directiorz opposite to the yotation of tire tensile axis. DEFORMATION in bcc metals has been reviewed by Maddin and Chen,&apos; Keh and eissman,&apos; and most recently by Nabarro, Basinski, and olt. From these reviews it is apparent that some disagreement exists concerning the crystallography of plastic deformation in bcc metals. There is evidence of noncrystallo-graphic slip, the crystal slipping on or near a noncrys-tallographic plane in the (111) zone for which the resolved shear stress is greatest. There is also evidence to indicate that crystallographic slip occurs in the planes of the same zone. On the other hand, there is agreement that the close-packed direction ( 111) is the slip direction in bcc metals. Further, in pure bcc metals4 and alloys the operative crystallographic slip systems are strongly dependent on temperature. Both crystallographic and noncrystallographic slip have been reportede8 in tungsten, a group VIA bcc metal. The number of slip families which operate in the case of crystallographic slip, however, has been in question. The earliest study by oucher&apos; of single-crystal tungsten tested at temperatures of 1800 to 5000°F led to the conclusion that only {112)( 111) type slip operated. Raymond and eumann recently reached the same conclusion studying deformation by rolling of plasma-flame single crystals at 1800°F; however, only [loo] and [110] orientations were studied. Work at high temperatures by Leber and Pughs on tungsten and Chen and Maddin9 on molybdenum suggests that conjugate slip on nonparallel (110) planes may account for the slip on (112) and (123) planes found by others working with bcc metals. The present paper presents evidence of three families or modes of slip in tungsten in the temperature EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material. Standard microtensile specimens, 0.160 in. diam by 0.640 in. gage length, were ground from commercial powder-metallurgy swaged tungsten rod, type MK. Specimens were heated for 10 min at 5150°F or 6 hr at 5400°F in vacuum of 1 x 105 Torr or less to produce single crystals. At the lower temperature an average of two out of seven specimens heated in a group developed single crystals throughout the specimen length as shown in Fig. 1, the rest remaining wholly poly crystalline. At the higher temperature, three or four out of seven specimens became single crystal. Other than to note that Laue X-ray photographs generally showed sharp, well-defined spots, no attempt was made to assess crystal perfection or measure dislocation density. Two tungsten single crystals grown from the melt by the plasma-arc process were also used for this study.

The tensi1e properties of Ferrovac iron have been studied from 4° to 300°K. The stress required for macroscopic yielding was found to he constant below approximately 50°K. The effect of mechanical twinning on this low -temperature stress plateau was investigated. The onset of twinning occurs in this iron between 130° and 150°K and depending on its previous thermal history the twinning-stress curue may drop below or remain above the vield-stress curves as the temperature is lowered. Twinning has been shown to initiate slip in quenclzed iron at low temperatures. In no instances, however, did the onset of twinning alter the continuity of the yield stress -tempwature curve. Our data shows that carbon inhibits twinning and slip at low tem-peratures. This observation nay be used to explain the ductile-to-brittle transition in iron. The effect of fast neutron irradiation on yielding and embrittlement in iron and Fe-C alloys is offered as supporting evidence for this viewpoint. THE mode of yielding in iron at low temperatures was studied in an attempt to find an expression based on a single mechanism to describe the thermal dependence of the yield stress of iron. There are two types of inflections observed in the variation of the yield stress with temperature in iron and Fe-C alloys. The first is associated with ductile behavior and consists of a region extending 50" to 100°K above absolute zero in which the yield stress is independent of temperature. The second is observed in more brittle materials such as Fe-C alloys and irradiated iron and consists of an abrupt discontinuity in the yield curve as the temperature is lowered through a ductile-to-brittle transition point. The temperature dependence of the yield stress for iron with four grain diameters as found in this study is shown in Fig. 1. To varying degrees all the curves appear to flatten or approach an asymptotic value as the temperature is lowered below 50°K. Several other investigators1,2 have observed a plateau in the yield stress of iron and steel at low temperatures and in 1956 Louat3 presented a theory which contained an explanation for this behavior. In a subsequent exchange with Erickson and Low4&apos;5 who attributed the plateau to the onset of mechanical twinning Louat8 showed that twinning first occurs in iron and steel tested in tension at temperatures as high as 140°K which is well above the observed plateau in yield stress. Furthermore he pointed out that both twinning and slip are basically dislocation processes and that with modified parameters his original theory still applied when deformation is initiated by twinning. Variables which affect the ductile-to-brittle transition in iron are test temperature, strain rate, composition and grain size.7 LOW,8 Hahn et al.,9 and Hull10 have provided evidence which links brittle fracture at a given temperature with the specimen grain size and the onset of twinning. In fact, Hull equates the brittle fracture stress to the twinning stress. On the other hand brittle fracture has been observed in the absence of twinning and priestnerl1 has given a fracture criterion which is valid whether or not fracture is preceded by extensive twinning. The data presented here clarify the role of twinning in the low-temperature deformation of iron.
