In many areas where carbonate rocks form important parts of the stratigraphic sequence, stratigraphers have experienced varying degrees of difficulty in differentiating and correlating limestone and dolomite units in both surface and subsurface work. With early Paleozoic rocks of the Mid-Continent, insoluble residues yield a remarkable amount of strati-graphic data and relatively good correlations may be carried over broad distances.' Unfortunately, neither such information nor electric logs and radioactive logs have been particularly helpful in interpreting the limestone sections of the Permian Basin of West Texas. This is because: (1) the variations in the sections may be very slight; (2) no completely satisfactory method of interpretation has been developed; and (3) the measurements themselves are not sensitive enough for small variations. Also, such logs are influenced by the fluid content. Paleontology and micro-paleontology remain the ultimate arbiters. As a routine tool, however, paleontol-ogical examination is slow and tedious. Chemical analysis may be used, but this, too, is extremely slow. Although rocks are not classified according to chemical composition, there is considerable variation with rock types. Correlation by chemical composition has two advantages, first, the characteristics determined are subject to minimum human error and interpretation, and secondly, the lithologic changes are not masked by fluid content as in the case of electric and radioactive logs. Some fossils concentrate certain elements which tentatively might be used to date rock units.' Rapid chemical analysis by spec-trographic means could be used as an adjunct to other means employed in correlation work, or might, in itself, present a suitable method. PURPOSE OF THIS INVESTIGATION Sloss and Cooke' have published data concerning spectrographic analysis of limestone rocks specifically for purposes of direct correlation of a single formation. These authors found satisfactory evidence that differences in percentage of four elements (Mg, Fe, Al, and Sr) in the Mississippian limestones of northern Montana were useful in carrying out correlation of this formation over a distance of approximately 50 miles. It was concluded from the preliminary work that the spectrochemical method offered possibilities of solution of some problems of correlation heretofore not possible. Since the work of Sloss and Cooke' was confined to one particular limestone zone, extension of the use of the method to examine two or more geologic formations would aid materially in the over-all problem of correlation of such rocks. Equipment is now available commercially with which very rapid spectrographic analyses may be made, and hence the problem was to determine whether the variations existing in the minor constituents of limestones were sufficient for use in possible correlation. Qualitative and semi-quantitative investigations were made to determine whether significant changes in the chemical condition occurred. It was a further purpose to investigate the geologic time-boundaries to see whether significant chemical variation could be found corresponding to the paleontological breaks. It was desirable to attempt correlation of a thick section of limestone or dolomite rock and to have as much information as possible on the section. Furthermore, it was felt that examination of formations more difficult to correlate by other means would enhance the value of the method should definite points of correlation be found. Samples were chosen from the Chapman-McFarlin Cogdell No. 25 well in the Cogdell field, Kent County, Tex., and from the General Crude Oil Co., Coleman No. 193-2 well in the Salt Creek field, Kent County, Tex. These fields belong to the famous series of "Canyon" reef fields of West Texas. Cores from the above wells were available from the United States Geological Survey, Austin, Tex. THE SPECTROGRAPHIC METHOD The choice of procedure to be followed in this investigation was based on the anticipated requirements peculiar to the problem. Since the problem was primarily to investigate the possibilities of applying the spec-trograph to problems of correlation in thick carbonate sections, a precise quantitative analysis did not appear necessary. A qualitative analysis to show the possible absence of presence of any element, or a semi-quantitative analysis of the elements present to show the relative changes in magnitude of selected elements was required. Both types of analysis were employed. The two most widely applied methods of semi-quantitative estimates are those of Harvey and of Slavin4,5 though various other procedures have been described.6 while the Harvey method has been modified by Addink,7 this refinement did not seem necessary to the present problem. Essentially, the procedure employed is a variation of the total energy method of Slavin with two exceptions: (1) stressing matrix effect, and (2) using densitometer measurements. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to summarise development of design processes used in the 1100 oreoody as a result of experience encountered. Design methods have been developed as a result of the history of ground behaviour, free-standing qualities of cemented back fill and mass blasting techniques. This paper contains an historical review of design methods previously described by Matthews ( 1972 ) , Hornsby and Sullivan (1977 and 19781, Kirkby, Blair and Hutton (19781, and Stewart (1980). The reasoning behind design philosphy changes are discussed and placed into context with methods now adopted. The 1100 orebody is Mount Isa's main producer of copper ore (5 million tonnes per year ) . Proven reserves are 120 million tonnes at 3.2% Cu. Location of the 1100 orebody in relation to overall mine geometry was well described by Dayton (1976). Geology The orebody is located in a series of massive brecciated shale lenses, in either a siliceous or dolomitic matrix, surrounded and separated by a uniform shale sequence. The whole formation is truncated at depth by a faulted contact with a greenschist facies metamorphic sequence below (Figure 1 and Figure 2) Mathias and Clark (1976). The breccia is known locally as silica dolomite and contains nearly all the economic mineralisation. Interfingering of shale and breccia often results in irregular boundaries to the silica dolomite and the ore limits. Geometry The geometry of the orebodies is shown by Figures 1, 2 and 3. Figure 3 also shows the location of the copper orebodies in relation to the lead orebodies. Structure Although the orebody is contained within the massive breccia (u.c.s. 150-250 MPa), it is cut by shear zones sub-parallel to the regional bedding (north-south striking, dipping approximately 60o to the west), and diagonally by major transverse faults (Figure A). These major faults have continuity in excess of 300 metres, with varying amounts of displacement up to 200 metres, and are zones of potential movement.

The experiments described in this paper constitute the preliminary work of an investigation outlined to determine the combined effects of steam and temperature on the endurance properties of certain steels. Essentially of a fundamental nature, it was found necessary, in order to make the investigation comprehensive, to test materials treated to give a wide range of properties. The work reported deals chiefly with nickel steel with one series of tests including nitriding steel. Such a study involves numerous variables, and requires an endurance-testing machine of rather special design. Testing Machines The testing machines used were designed by C. E. Weaver;l they are a modification of the White-Souther and McAdam types. Each was driven directly by an individual 1/2-hp. 115-volt direct-current motor, running at a speed of 2200 r.p.m. Fig. 1 shows the assembly drawing and Fig. 2, a photograph of one of the machines. Specimen B is held by the rotating specimen holder A inside the steam box F, which is closed at the top by a tight-fitting, elliptical cover G. The load is applied to the specimen through the rod D and bearing C. E is an oil pipe leading fromthe lubrication system to the bearing C. The steam, which comes from the power house, is admitted through an inlet (not shown in Fig. 1) at the side of the box, the drain being at the bottom. Steam packings were placed around the rod D and the rotating shaft at H, from which the water was drained by means of a vacuum, which usually showed a gage reading of about 10 in. The temperature was measured by a mercury thermometer, and the pressure by a steam gage. Method of Applying Load After the motor has been started and the specimen as a consequence put in rotation, the load is applied by placing the foot pedal A (Fig. 2) in contact with electromagnet B, the winding of which is connected electrically in series with the motor. The adsorption of selenite on bentonite, kaolinite, and an iron--coated illite was studied to determine the importance of several soil variables on selenite removal from uranium mill tailings pond seepage. Adsorption capacities of the clays of selenite varied by orders of magnitude and decreased in the following order: illite > kaolinite > bentonite. Maximum adsorption of selenite on the clays was observed between pH 2.5 and the clay's zero-point-of-charge. Substantially less selenite was adsorbed on these clays in actual mill tailings solutions than in model systems. Virtually all selenite was removed from the tailings at pH 7. The principal removal mechanism at this pH is suggested to be the adsorption of selenite on freshly precipitated metal hydroxides. It is concluded that selenite can be removed from tailings seepage in soil or in clay liners in the presence of kaolinitic clays and iron oxides. Selenite would also tend to be removed from tailings seepage in calcareous strata.

There are many uranium deposits which are too deep, too poor in quality or too small in extent to be economically strip mined. It now appears that this uranium can be mined using in situ leaching processes. A number of field tests have been, are being or will be conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of In site leaching. Preliminary results are encouraging, but a major question concerns the restoration of the mine site, which is generally contained within an aquifer. It is necessary to ensure that the quality of the water is not adversely affected by the mining operation. One component of the lixiviant is necessarily a cation and, during the course of mining, the ion exchange sites of the minerals in the mine zone become saturated with this cation. Ammonium is the cation now commonly used. Clearly, any restoration procedure or question involving the rate of cation migration with the groundwater all necessarily involve the process of ion exchange coupled with flow in porous media. The equations describing this process are presented in this paper and numerical solutions obtained. Preliminary results showing the effect of isotherm shape, cation exchange capacity, flow and dispersion are presented. These results demonstrate that in many situations cation migration in ground water will be slow.

ALTHOUGH gold is one of the rarer metals, it is widely distributed; it is found on all of the continents and in each of the grand metallogenic provinces of the earth. It is prominent particularly in the shield areas of the earth; these areas have produced a large part of the world's lode gold and in most of them gold lodes are more important than the lodes of other metals. The Scandinavian shield is the only one that has not produced much gold. Nearly all of the world's gold has been derived from lodes and from sands and gravels where gold placers formed by the destruction of lodes. The gold derived from magmatic segregations, from pegmatites and from contact metamorphic deposits is quite subordinate to that derived from auriferous lodes. The lodes include all veins and related deposits that are formed by hot waters that move along fissures or other openings and that deposit vein matter in the fissures and by replacement of the country rocks along the fissures. All of the shield areas of the earth are characterized by large areas of granitic rocks including granitic gneisses, granodiorites and other acid intrusives which here are included in the general term "granite." The granites are intruded into schists, ancient lavas and other rocks which here are designated as the "invaded" rocks. The granites are parts of what once were great batholiths: that is, they are the remaining portions of great deep-seated bodies that slope outward, have very irregular roofs and so far as known have no floors but extend downward to great though unknown depths. Some of them are scores or hundreds of miles across and contain islands or "roof pendants" of the invaded rocks at places where the roofs of the batholiths were low-that is, where erosion has not yet completely unroofed the batholiths.

THOMPSON1 proposed a very convenient nomenclature in which an imaginary regular tetrahedron was used to facilitate the analysis of dislocation interactions in fcc materials. The faces of the tetrahedron were constructed parallel to four different sets of (111) planes, and the six edges of the tetrahedron then represented the six 1/2 [110] Burgers vectors. The lines which joined the midpoint of a tetrahedron face with the ends of one of its edges represented the Burgers vectors of the partial dislocations into which the six 1/2 [I101 Burgers vectors dissociate. Using Frank&apos;s2 notation, all of the dislocations and their partial dislocations were identified and numerous possible interactions were postulated. The case of hexagonal crystals is unfortunately more complex, but it appears convenient to introduce a system similar to that of Thompson1 to describe the various slip planes and Burgers vectors encountered in cph structures. Of the numerous methods that have been tested or considered for the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores, this article deals only with proven flowsheets that are adopted in plants in operation or which have been reliably pilot-plant tested. Several recommended layouts are described and discussed. They illustrate recent trends and embody improvements and new features that have resulted from the experience acquired in the operation of the plants already in service. They have been developed, in the last few years, in the course of designing several iron ore beneficiation plants of various types and sizes. Some of the design features in the layouts which are submitted represent, in some respects, personal views and may not meet the full approval of others in this field. It is hoped that this presentation will provide an opportunity for constructive discussion of the problems involved and of suitable solutions.

I am indebted to L. E. Bryant, of Danville, Ky., President of the Virginia Mining Co., operating coal-mines in Scott county, Tenn., for the following information relating to the existence of the Clinton iron-ore under the NW. slope of the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky and Tennessee. During the past 15 years quite an important oil-field has been developed in a region having Wayne county, Ky., as its center, and a large number of wells have been drilled in that and adjacent territory in the search for oil. Many of these wells have been carried to considerable depths below the recognized oil-bearing horizon, and one of them was drilled by Mr. Bryant at Pine Knot, a station on the Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific railroad, a few miles north of the point where that road crosses the Kentucky-Tennessee State-line. G. H. CLEVENGER, Colorado Springs, Colo.-Mr. Crowe&apos;s paper will be of great interest to cyanide operators, as it is a distinct new development in cyanidation. After reading the paper it occurred to me that some of us had done practically the same thing some time ago, but without design and unconsciously. I refer particularly to the operation of some of the earlier types of vacuum filter, used in connection with a dry vacuum pump and a receiver, which is somewhat similar equipment to that employed by Mr. Crowe. However, we did not appreciate the good effects we were getting from such of this solution as was precipitated, and it has remained for Mr. Crowe to bring distinctly to our attention the advantages of removing air from cyanide solutions before precipitation. Full credit is therefore due him for this very clever improvement in the cyanide process.

George Hammell Cook was born at Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey, January 5, 1818. His early education was obtained in the country school, and he was, for a short time, a teacher in his native town. In 1836 he was engaged, as a civil engineer, in making surveys and locating the line of the Morris and Essex Railroad from Newark to Morristown, and the extension of the road to the Delaware River. Appreciating the advantages of a thorough education, and seeking a wider field of usefulness, he entered the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy in 1838, and, was graduated from that .school in 1839. In this institution he heard the lectares of Amos Eaton, the famous teacher, from whom so many of our older scientists caught their inspiration and love for the natural sciences. There is not a coal preparation engineer alive who would equip his newest and most modern preparation plant with all new and untried pieces of equipment. He may install a few such pieces in which he has great confidence, but he will also spend much time assuring himself that everything else in the plant has been subjected to the test of time. He may arrange these units in a unique manner, but in general, they must have proven themselves elsewhere before he will approve them for his plant. A modern coal preparation plant contains only a few items of processing equipment, the remaining items being devices for materials handling. Consequently, pure automation is almost impossible. Although the main aim of automation is conservation of manpower, it generally results in uniformity of product, lower maintenance costs, and the many intangibles that make a better plant.

An industry/government team sponsored by the Dept. of the Interior completed a study tour of the underground coal mining industries in Great Britain and Germany to review new and emerging coal mining technology. The group found that differences in tradition, mining conditions, and industry capabilities have led to different approaches in technological developments, many of which have the potential for application in U. S. mining. Both countries are working to improve materials and procedures for roadside pack wall. The British are developing a pump-packing system in which bentonite, water, stone, and a special cement are pipelined to the pack area to form a low strength compressible pack wall. The German industry is using anhydrite or blotzdammer to form a high strength pack wall. Both countries are using full-face tunnel-boring machines. The German industry has had considerable success with shield-type longwall supports.

FRIEDENSVILLE orebody in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, lies in the south central part of the USGS Allentown Quadrangle. Physiographically the area is located in a small reentrant-known as Saucon Valley-of the Great Valley Province into the Reading Prong of the New England uplift. Saucon Valley itself is an oval-shaped lowland eight miles long and four miles wide, surrounded by ridges except where connected with the Great Valley through a breach in the rim known as Saucon Gap. These ridges, composed of Pre-Cambrian metamorphic rocks and Cambrian quartzites, rise some 500 ft above the valley floor. They are continuous with the New Jersey Highlands. The valley lowland is immediately underlain by lower Paleozoic dolomites and limestones. This area is one of low relief having a swing of approximately 100 ft, with an average elevation of 375 ft above sea level. The entire valley, which has a water shed of about 58 sq miles, is drained by Saucon Creek. This unit flows in a northeasterly direction to the Saucon Gap, where it discharges into the Lehigh River.

Hibbard, New York City (communication to the Secretary): The title of Mr. Sargent&apos;s paper is somewhat misleading, since the paper itself relates chiefly to various kinds of annealing and their effects, and in very small part only to heat-treatment proper. This term has a well-defined meaning in steel metallurgf, and always includes a rate of cooling faster than the material treated would have in the open air. In bringing about this accelerated rate of cooling, some medium other than air at rest is brought into contact with the heated steel. Usually a liquid (almost always either oil or water) is employed ; but for certain steels a blast of air, and for others an easily fusible or soft metal, such as led (either solid or melted), may be used. Heat-treatment usually includes also subsequent moderate heating, followed, it may be, with another accelerated cooling.

Franklin Guiterman was born March 7, 1856, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where his father, William Guiterman, was at that time engagcd in the wholesale dry-goods business. Both of his parents were natives of Bavaria, but the inspiration of America was upon them, as they gave to their son a peculiarly American name, symbolizing thrift, individualism and scientific knowledge. Franklin Guiterman received his general education in the grammar schools and the Hughes High School of Cincinnati. He finished the latter course in the early 70&apos;s of the last century, when the great demand for mining and metallurgical experts in this country naturally led his parents to direct his further studies in that direction. Accordingly, he went to Europe, and studied at the Royal Saxon Mining Academy of Freiberg, where he completed the course in 1877, at the age of 21, and returned to the United States to engage in mining and metallurgical practice. Going to Colorado, he became assayer for the Terrible mine, at Georgetown, and in 1878, for the Little Chief mine at Leadville. The position of assayer, particularly at that period and in that region, was the door to much valuable knowledge of mines and ores. Besides learning the nature and value of the different classes of ore from the mines of his own company (if he was employed by a company) the assayer, had the first chance, through his outside customers, of seeing and testing the specimens brought by prospectors, and thus learning of important new discoveries. Moreover, if he possessed metallurgical knowledge, he might advance to the position of a metallurgical manager. Guiterman stayed in Leadville four years, and during that period was assayer or chemist for several different companies. Then for about a year he superintended copper-mining operations at Hartville, Wyo. In 1884, he had charge of sampling works at Silverton, colo.—an admirable opportunity for gaining wide knowledge of the varied ores of the San Juan country. In 1885, he was Superintendent of the Mingo plant of the Pennsylvania Lead Co., at Sandy, near Salt Lake City, Utah. The foregoing list of employments, each occupying not more than a year, certainly looks like the history of a rolling stone, gathering no moss. But the cause of these frequent changes was not inefficiency in each new position. In that time and period, a man who lost his place for such a reason was not likely to get another in the same neighborhood might away. And as for gathering "moss," the kind of "moss" that

Extensive studies have been carried out on electric furnace and blast furnace slags obtained in the winning of iron from its ores. These slags normally consist of elements of the gangue minerals present in the ores, as well as the added flux materials. In consequence, melts of CaO, MgO, Al2O3 and SiO2 can be considered as representing typical slag compositions. When a slag of this composition cools, it usually crystallizes according to predictions possible from an equilibrium diagram of these constituents, providing the melt is not undercooled to form glass. The melt is either viscous or fluid, depending upon the ratio of binary cations to silica, and crystallizes easily or forms a glass for the same reasons. If the melt is not overheated so that carbides of the metal components of the slag are formed and if the composition of the slag is so adjusted that it has a high fluidity, liquid equilibrium is attained and the slag can be held in a liquid state for extended periods of time. Upon tapping, the slag crystallizes into minerals, the type and proportion of which are determined by the melt composition. Since equilibrium is attained, the holding period is not critical. In melts containing a large increment of titanium, however, the normal slag procedures are not applicable. Titanium, as one of the atomic transition elements, is, at elevated temperatures, capable of being reduced to form metalloid compounds much more readily than the refractory oxides present in normal slags. In consequence, an oxide melt containing titanium never reaches equilibrium in a reducing environment, but continues to shift its composition until cooled. If melts of this nature are cooled and samples submitted to metal-lographic and X ray analysis the course of reaction and crystallization in this type of slag can be determined. Preparation of Slag The slags investigated fell into the system CaO-MgO-TiO2-Al2O3-SiO2 and were produced from ilmenite ores reduced by carbon in an electric furnace. Since the equilibrium series1 and the laboratory smelting of ilmenite2 are described in two of the accompanying papers, detailed description of the smelting procedure is not required here. However, certain essentials must be mentioned. Two types of melts were used to produce slags studied in this investigation. The first series of smelts made to determine proper flux addition were produced in a 4 lb Ajax induction furnace. The charge, consisting of ore with the proper flux addition, was heated in a graphite crucible until fluid, held fluid for a sufficient time period to obtain 1-5 pct FeO content, and poured. Because of the small size of the charge only the final sample of these melts could be examined. In the melts made in the 50 lb arc furnace, however, grab samples taken at 10 min. intervals between time of initial melting and final pouring were available for examination. These samples allowed a much clearer picture of the course of reaction and crystallization. amounts of ferrous oxide and reduced titanium compounds is opaque to transmitted light. Therefore, all petro-graphic studies had to be made on polished slag sections. A representative sample of slag was cut or broken, mounted in a thermosetting plastic, ground flat using 400 grit silicon carbide, the coarse scratches removed with 600 grit silicon carbide and polished on billiard cloth using levigated alumina. Rouge was avoided because of the entrainment of the red particles in pores in the slag, causing a possible confusion with some of the mineral phases. In order to prevent sample projection above the plastic surface red bakelite was used to hold the sample, and backed up with clear lucite. In this manner sample labels could be permanently retained in the mounting. The polished samples were examined on a Bausch and Lomb metallograph at magnifications of 250 X, 500 X, 1000 X and 1800 X. The instrument was equipped for examination of specimens under bright field illumination and with crossed nicols. A magenta tint plate to aid in color tone differentiation was also used. Petrology of Slags In order to determine the composition and mineral relatinos of a previously unreported system petrologically, it is essential that the starting composition, reaction temperature and final composition be known. The chemical composition of the ilmenite ore used in these smelts is given in Table 1, and the complete analysis of a typical high titanium, low iron slag is given in Table 2. In the winning of TiO2 from ilmenite by a smelting process it is necessary to produce a slag which will melt at an economically feasible temperature, remain molten as the iron is removed by reduction, be fluid enough to be readily removed from the furnace, contain a high percentage of TiO2 and a low percentage of reduced titanium com-
