It has been the custom of the Railroad Commission of Texas to hold hearings each month with respect to existence and imminence of waste of oil and gas in Texas and its prevention, and to issue orders restricting the production of oil to the reasonable market demands and allocating production to the various fields in Texas. The practice of designating the actual days during the month on which wells are to be shut down was discontinued in the order for November 1942, and orders issued thereafter contain only the number of shut-in and producing days for the month. Orders issued by the Railroad Commission are divided into two main subdivisions, the first a general shutdown order of all oil wells in the various fields in Texas, and second, the exception of certain fields to this general order. Table I shows the producing days for all of the fields in Texas for 1944 under the first of these classifications : The fields that have producing schedules varying from the general order may be divided roughly into three subdivisions, as follows: Table 2 shows the producing days for certain fields that were prorated as a group throughout 1944. Other fields which were occasionally included with this group were also prorated under the general order and by special orders. The producing days for these irregular fields are shown in Table 4. In Table 3 are listed fields that were exempted from any shutdown days during December 1944, the majority retaining this exception throughout 1944. Certain fields included in the general order were added to this group on the first day of the month shown.

The cementing process has been used in approximately 2.5 million oil and gas wells to seal, protect and isolate various downhole formations against communication. It has been adapted to other more specialized situations such as solution mining and sealing salt storage reservoirs. The technical literature contains very few papers specifically dealing with the cementing process for these applications, yet there have been many special projects in various parts of the world that are novel. These will be highlighted in this review. This paper also presents a comprehensive review of the various techniques used in cementing wells drilled for the recovery of soluble salts and brines. It also covers the application of cementing techniques to a large number of wells drilled for the storage of hydrocarbons in South Louisiana.

The volume of gas in storage reservoirs may be compuled from estimates of hydrocarbon pore volume and gas density. However, both are dificult 10 estimate accurrately. Further, no adequate method has been presented for estimating reservoir performance during operation for Volumetric gas-storage reservoirs. Normally, gas-storage reservoirs exhibit small pressure gradients in the area conr(zilliitg the storage wells, even under conditions of maximum injection or withdrawal. A zone of low permeability usally surrounds, and is in communication with, tile permeable zone which causes the storage reservoir to exhibit a definite pressure lag, as evidenced by lack of pressure stabilization after extended periods of shut-in. An analysis is presented for determining pore volume and gas in place, and for predicting future reservoir behavior of such reservoirs. The mathematical development is presented and a solution is shown for an operating storage reservoir. INTRODUCTION Depleted gas reservoirs arc often used for gas storage. The reservoir usually contains a permeable area in which numerous storage wells arc located. The permeable zone permits high deliverability and injectivity with relatively small pressure loss. However, pressure equilibrium may not be attained even after long periods of shut-in because of the fact that the permeable zone is in communication with an adjacent tight section. Most of these gas-storage reservoirs are sand lenses, such as ancient beaches or offshore bars. The areal geometry of these reservoirs is normally such that flow in the tight zone will be approximately linear, and the solutions presented here should apply. DISCUSSION For purposes of this paper, a gas-storage reservoir is considered to consist of a volume of permeable rock in communication with tight rock, all of which is surrounded by an impermeable barrier. Pressure gradients across the permeable zone are small due to low flow resistance and well density. Hence, the permeable zone is considered to be at a uniform pressure which is only a function of time as gas is injected or withdrawn. The tight zone is considered to be linear with uniform permeability and porosity, and the pressure in the tight zone is a function of both position and time. l'wo solutions for flow in this system are used to define the reservoir and determine its properties. The first solution is for an infinite linear tight zone in communication with the permeable zone. The expression for constant gas-withdrawal rate is Eqs. I and 2 ore superposed to account for varying rates of production or injection and are used to fit gas-storage field reservoir history. The solution for the infinite case, Eq. 1, is first applied to field data for early times following a shut-in period. Constants BDa and c are ohtained by a least-squares fit of pressure and rate data. After the pressure wave from gas injection or withdrawal reaches the external boundary of the tight zone, the infinite solution will no longer apply and pressure behavior should be more nearly represented by Eq. 2 for a gas reservoir in communication with a finite linear tight zone. The values of the constants found from curve-fitting Eq. 1 to the early time data may then be used in Eq. 2 that only the coefficient- L containing the unknown

IN the early days of concrete construction, the question of quality of sand or gravel to be used as aggregate in concrete was given little or no consideration. If the construction engineer had sufficient quantity for his structure within a reasonable distance, he was contented and gave no thought to the possibility that the material might have adverse physical, chemical, or thermal properties which could cause future deterioration of his concrete and possible failure of his structure. Today a very different situation exists. With the building of larger and larger concrete structures, with a longer and longer life expectancy, the quality of the aggregate material has become of major importance. Even in small concrete structures aggregate quality cannot be passed off lightly and the quality of the aggregate must be such as to give the anticipated life without costly maintenance. The first question to arise in the selection of an aggregate is what makes a sand or gravel suitable or unsuitable for use in concrete, and how can its quality be judged. No one rock type can be depended upon to furnish sound durable material in all instances. Granitic rocks, for example, make very satisfactory aggregates in some cases, but they are among the most unsuitable of materials when they are fractured, weathered, or highly micaceous. Limestones make excellent concrete aggregates on the one hand, and on the other they may be unsound and lack durability if they contain appreciable clay, they may have a harmful chemical reaction with the cement if they contain amorphous silica, or they may have thermal characteristics which make them highly unsuitable for use in concrete. Each rock, gravel, or sand must be proved on its own merits for the particular job under consideration. The selection of suitable aggregate materials may be divided into two major phases, the geological phase which is carried on largely in the field, and the testing phase which of course is a laboratory problem; both are important. Very often the geological phase alone is sufficient for the selection of satisfactory aggregates for minor structures but for major structures both phases must be thoroughly investigated. Geological Phase In the southwest part of the country nearly every major rock type, igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary, may be found with all imaginable intermediate phases and in all imaginable stages of alteration. Frequently very different rock types, different as to geological age, composition, and condition occur very close together. Alluvium and stream-bed sands and gravels will consist of many different rock types and even ledge rocks may vary radically as to texture and composition within the area of a quarry site. Some of the rocks make suitable aggregate materials whereas others are highly deleterious in concrete. Too often the good and the bad occur together and more than ordinary caution is required in aggregate selection. Aggregate Sources: Concrete aggregates are usually obtained from stream-bed sands and gravels or from ledge rocks. Each has certain favorable and unfavorable characteristics and it is sometimes necessary to investigate both types to determine the most suitable source for a specific structure. Stream Beds: The predominant sources of aggregate materials in southern California and Arizona are stream beds. Vast quantities of sands and gravels are brought from the mountain ranges by the rivers during times of flood but most of these streams are dry a large part of the time and hence these deposits make easily accessible sources of aggregate materials. The effectiveness of digital computing machines in making technical calculations depends on how well the work is arranged to utilize the capability of the machines. This note presents a particularly useful way of calculating hydrocarbon vapor-li.quid equilibrium in the flash vaporization (or condensation) system. The method is well suited to sequence-controlled computing equipment. It is not limited to equilibrium calculations and may be used for solution of most implicit equations in one variable. INTRODUCTION There is increasing interest in the use of electronic digital computers in research and engineering calculations. This is a fortunate and inevitable trend in view of both the increasingly extensive numerical work which is becoming a routine part of many daily production operations and growing demand for the overwhelming amounts of calculations required by newly developed numerical methods for solving heretofore unsolved problems. Machines are in many ways ideally suited to the task but of necessity present certain difficulties. for a particular poblem to be solved must often be formulated quite differently from the way it would be arranged for manual solution. This is done in order to take advantage of the inherent speed and precision of electronic computers and at the same time to limit the need for number storage to the capacity of the machine. Therefore, this note is submitted to present a general and quite powerful method of finding solutions of the frequently encountered implicit equation: F(x,y1,y2,...ya)=0.......(1) where the root, x, is to be found for a given set of y1, ... yn.. The procedure is well suited for use with computing machines, for it usually requires but little storage or programming beyond that necessary to evaluate F. HYDROCARBON EQUILIBRIUM The method is described in terms of the problem it was designed to solve, i.e., the calculation of hydrocarbon vapor-liquid equilibrium in flash vaporization. Under classification of the ores as they come to the mill, it will be noted that these are classified according to their lime contents. In previous years the classification was based upon sulfur contents, CaO not being considered; class A would be called the oxidized ore and class B the sulfides. Classification according to CaO is the first public indication that a decided change in the ore has necessitated improved methods of treatment. The very serious effect that CaO, even in small quantities, has upon extraction has been noted for some years.

The occasional reports of progressive furnace-men, giving the results of physical tests to prove the superior qualities of their pig-irons, have encouraged the writer to believe that the time is ripe for the discussion of such work, and the inauguration of some correct system by which the furnace-man and the founder could make intelligent comparison of the elements of strength, deflection, contraction, and chill presented in pigmetal. In most cases the physical tests now made by furnace-men define but one quality in the iron, and are generally too vague to permit any true comparison. For example, one furnaceman tells us he can punch holes in his cast-iron, wishing it to be inferred that the iron is very soft and strong. Another furnace casts a long wedge, the thin end running to a knife's edge, which is supposed to prove the fluidity of the iron, for the founder's benefit. Another casts in square-cornered " chills," to define the hardness or softness of the metal. To the writer's knowledge these tests are not advocated by their originators as suitable for standards; and they are, to his mind, but evidence of unrest on the part of progressive furnace-men, who feel that something should be done in the line of physical tests. The writer knows of no furnace-men who make and keep records of the strength of their iron obtained by means of tests made on recognized standard testing-scales ; but he does know of a prominent furnace-salesman, who, not long ago, came into possession of a 1-inch square bar that stood 1400 pounds

Silica sand deposits are usually contaminated with various heavy minerals which must be removed to make the silica useful for flat-glass production. Research was undertaken to develop a better procedure for producing flat-glass-grade silica. Batch tests revealed that anionic detergent-type reagents had considerable promise. Pilot plant tests were run to compare the effectiveness of anionic detergent-type reagents with petroleum sulfonate in the removal of heavy minerals from a potential glass sand. Another slightly modified commercial procedure also was evaluated for comparison. In the pilot plant trials, utilization of the anionic detergent potation reagents did not produce quite as good results as petroleum sulfonate. It is likely that flat glass-grade sand could be produced with the anionic detergent reagents if more extensive pilot plant tests were conducted.

INTEREST in developing White Pine, considered since 1942, was renewed by the Korean conflict and its shortage of domestic sources of copper. In view of this Morris F. La Croix, president of Copper Range Co. of Boston, and of its wholly owned subsidiary, White Pine Copper Co., worked an agreement out with Government officials. Essentially the contract called for a construction loan of $57,185,000 at 5 pct interest, with $13 million additional supplied by Copper Range. Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted for 243,750 tons of copper from the first 275,000 tons produced, at a base price of 25.5& per lb, the contract to expire Dec. 31, 1961.

It is known that austenitic chromium-nickel steels that have free carbide in the grain boundaries are subject to intergranu-lar corrosion. It is difficult to detect such a susceptible condition in a fabricated article because present test methods require a sample section for examination and in most cases this is difficult to obtain. The question of the nature and prevention of intergranular corrosion in austenitic stainless steels has been ably discussed by Bain and co-workers1-3 and by other investigator4-10 The present methods of study subject samples to corrosive conditions in such reagents as the Strauss solution, a mixture of copper sulphate and sulphuric acid. Such tests usually require at least 72 hr. to run. Various methods of measuring the degree of sensitization have been employed, such as the measurement of electrical resistivity, magnetic measuremerits, measurement of the degree of cracking produced on bending over a malldrel, and microscopic studies. The detection of carbides at the grain boundaries by metallographic polishing and etching methods is tedious and requires a skilled operator. A recent report on such methods of carbide detection is given by the American Society for Testing Materials Subcommittee VI of Committee A.-1011 and by Arness.12 The present investigation was undertaken to develop a simple test procedure for detecting carbide precipitation or susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. The test is designed for use in the plant and for the testing of fabricated structures. Carbide precipitation, the factor leading to susceptibility to corrosion, is produced by heating the alloy in the temperature range 800° to 1600°F., as in welding, in improper annealing or in service where such temperatures are met. The connection between such precipitation and susceptibility to corrosion has been thoroughly discussed, as has been the use of stabilizing addition elements to prevent precipitation. Experimental Method A small area of the steel under test is subjected to an anodic treatment in a cell that can be 'lamped Onto a a Or an actual structure. The cell and electrical circuit used are illustrated in Fig. I. The cell C is lead, joined to the steel plate D and insulated from it by a short piece of rubber tubing E. The cell is forced tightly against the steel plate by a spring Or clamping device. The seal formed by the rubber against the steel plate is sufficient to retain the liquid bath inside the cell. The spot treated can be made any shape desired, depending on the shape of the rubber gasket. The cell illustrated polishes a circular spot about 3/8- diameter' The bath consists of 60 per cent (by weight) sulphuric acid to which is added 5 ml. per liter of Glycyrrhiza extract (U.S.P.). The cell requires about 2 to 2.5

The scaling laws as formulated by Rapoport relate dynamically similar flow systems in porous media each involving two immiscible, incompressible fluids. A two-dimensional numerical technique for solving the differential equations describing systems of this type has been employed to assess the practical value of the scaling laws in light of the virtually unscalable nature of relative permeability and capillary pressure curves and boundary conditions. Two hypothetical systems — a gas reservoir subject to water drive and the laboratory scaled model of that reservoir — were investigated with emphasis placed on water coning near a production well. Comparison of the computed behavior of these par ticular systems shows that water coning in the reservoir would be more severe than one would expect from an experimental study of a laboratory model scaled within practical limits to the reservoir system. This paper also presents modifications of the scaling laws which are available for systems that can be described adequately in two-dimensional Cartesian coordinates. INTRODUCTION Present day digital computing equipment and methods of numerical analysis allow realistic and quantitative studies to be carried out for many two-phase flow systems in porous media. Before these tools became available the anticipated behavior of systems of this type could be inferred only from analytical solutions of simplified mathematical models or from experimental studies performed on laboratory models. To reproduce the behavior of a reservoir system on the laboratory scale, certain relationships must be satisfied between physical and geometric properties of the reservoir and laboratory systems. Where the reservoir fluids may be considered as two immiscible and incompressible phases, the necessary relationships have been formulated by Rapoportl and others.2-5 Rapoport's scaling laws follow from inspectional analysis of the differential equation describing phase saturation distribution in such systems. It will be recalled that these scaling laws presuppose three conditions: (1) the relative permeability curves must be identical for the model and prototype; (2) the capillary pressure curve (function of phase saturation) for the model must be linearly related to that of the prototype; and (3) boundary conditions imposed on the model must duplicate those existing at the boundaries of the prototype. These three requirements seldom if ever can be satisfied in scaling an actual reservoir to the laboratory system because: (1) The laboratory medium normally will be unconsolidated (glass beads or sand) while the reservoir usually is consolidated. Relative permeability and capillary pressure curves are usually quite different for consolidated and unconsolidated porous media. (2) The reservoir usually will be surrounded by a large aquifer which could be simulated in the laboratory only to a limited extent. (3) Wells present in the reservoir would scale to microscopic dimensions in the laboratory if geometric similarity is to be maintained. In view of these considerations, rigorous scaling of even a totally defined reservoir probably would never be possible. The purpose of this paper is to assess the practical value of the scaling laws in the light of the unscalable variables. This has been done by carrying out numerical solutions in two dimensions to the differential equations describing the flow of two immiscible, incompressible fluids in porous media for a field scale reservoir and a laboratory model of that reservoir. While both the reservoir and the laboratory model were purely fictional, each has been made as realistic and representative as possible. The field problem selected as the basis for the investigation was an inhomogeneous, layered gas reservoir initially at capillary gravitational equilibrium and subsequently produced in the presence of water drive. The laboratory model of this reservoir was designed to utilize oil and water in a glass bead pack. Potential applications for boom tunnelling machines requires reliable assessment of in-situ performance. The majority of existing classification schemes concentrate on the prediction of excavation rate, neglecting the important influence of tool consumption rates. A statistical approach is taken to the analysis of the performance data, which was obtained first-hand through in-situ monitoring, and laboratory testing of representative rock samples. A statistical discrimination technique is used to produce a scheme for the prediction of performance groups, each of which covers a limited range of cutting rate and/or tool consumption rate.

SINCE the beginning of this century it has been known that hydrogen contributes to the porosity of steel and that it is harmful to its mechanical properties. The evidence for this has been largely qualitative. Steel to which hydrogen was purposely added. in sufficient .amounts was shown to be either porous or brittle or both, whereas similar steel of low hydrogen content was shown to be free of porosity and to possess normal physical properties. There have been a considerable number of qualitative experiments of this type. Also, early in this century, a few attempts were made to measure the amount of hydrogen normally dissolved in commercial steels. This was usually done by placing the sample under an inverted liquid column such as mercury and collecting the evolved gas. These attempts, while not successful in measuring actual amounts of dissolved hydrogen gas, were able to prove that this gas will diffuse out of steel at room temperature, and that the amount of hydrogen dissolved is normally very small. On the basis of such qualitative evidence, hydrogen has been and still is blamed for a great number of the troubles encountered in the steel industry. In recent years, partial solutions for many steel-working problems have been obtained. These have led to increased interest in accurate quantitative work on hydrogen in steel, with the expectation that the results might possibly answer a few of the remaining unsolved problems. Commercially, two of the obvious questions which are in need of an answer are: (1) what are the most important sources of hydrogen, and (2) what quantity of hydrogen can be tolerated in various steels? There are many other unanswered questions. To begin to find the answers it seemed logical to start at the beginning of steel production with the liquid metal. Further, it seemed almost imperative to solve first the problems of analysis and sampling of the metal for hydrogen. Once these problems have been solved, it would be possible to answer more of the important commercial problems mentioned above. As a consequence, it was decided to design an analytical apparatus and, upon satisfactory completion of this, to develop an accurate method of sampling liquid metal for hydrogen.

A double crucible system was developed for I-g scale plutonium reductions. The equipment consists of an inner MgO crucible, an outer MgO crucible, and a stainless steel pressure vessel. The reduction charge is PIaced in the inner crucible and the annulus between the inner and outer crucibles is filled with a mixture of calcium and iodine. The exothermic reaction between the calcium and iodine in the annulus supplies the heat required for complete reaction of the reduction charge ana' good metal coalescence. Metal yields of 80 to 85 ,pct were obtained from I-g scale reductions and yields as high as 97.5 pct were obtained from 0.5-g scale reductions. The system was used to reduce charges containing as little as 0.1 g of Pu resulting in metal yields up to 90 Pct. THIN metal foils of highly enriched plutonium isotopes are used as targets for cross section and other measurements. The isotopes are separated in the calutrons at Oak Ridge and are very expensive to prepare. Often, only 1 or 2 g of material are available thereby emphasizing the need for a method of preparing these small quantities of metal. Procedures for 1-g scale plutonium reductions have been described, but these procedures require elaborate or expensive equipment. For example, the procedure described by Anselin et al.1 requires an inert atmosphere glovebox and induction heating equipment. The procedure described by Baker2 also uses induction heating equipment to obtain the recommended heating rates and liner temperatures. Baker's procedure also requires high purity PuF4 with very little PuO2 present. The procedure described in this paper resulted from a search for a simple and inexpensive method for making 1-g scale plutonium reductions. EXPERIMENTAL Equipment. The equipment required for the double crucible system consists of a pressure vessel, two MgO crucibles, a MgO crucible lid, and a resistance-heated, vertical crucible furnace. The crucibles were slip cast from high purity MgO and were supplied by the Coors Porcelain Co. and the Norton Co. The pressure vessel and lid were fabricated from 316 stainless steel. Materials. The PuF4 used for this study was obtained from the P1utoniu:m Metal Production Department at Rocky Flats. The PuF4 was prepared in a con- tinuous hydrofluorinator by reacting Pu02 with HF at 650°C. The isotopic composition of the plutonium was approximately 93 pct 239PU, 6 pct 240PU, and 0.5 pct 241PU. Some of this PuF, contained less than 1 pct Pu02 (Batch No. 6 and 7), while other batches contained up to 15 pct Pu02 (Batch No. 3). The chemical analyses of all the PuF4 used for this study is given in Table I. The calcium was 99 pct pure, AEC grade, and only that fraction which would pass through a 20 mesh screen was used. The I2 was USP grade re-sublimed I2 which was ground before being used. Procedure. Various charge compositions and methods for loading the double crucible system were tested. The optimum conditions for 1-g scale reductions are described below. The double crucible system was loaded as shown in Fig. 1. The outer crucible was placed in the pressure vessel and the annulus between them was filled with MgO sand. The inner crucible was placed in the outer crucible, supported by a layer of MgO sand in the bottom of the outer crucible. A mixture of 5.2 g of Ca and 25 g of I2 was placed in the annulas between the two crucibles. The upper portion of the annulas was filled with MgO sand. Next, a layer of a mixture of calcium and I, equal to 20 wt pct of the calcium and I2 used in the main charge was placed in the bottom of the inner crucible. The PuF, to be reduced was mixed with a 30 pct excess of calcium and 1 mole of I2 per mole of Pu and this mixture was placed in the inner crucible. The charge was topped with a layer of a mixture of calcium and I2 equal to 20 wt pct of the calcium and I2 used in the main charge. The pressure vessel was sealed with a flat copper gasket and was purged by alternately evacuating and filling with argon. The purge valve was closed and the vessel was placed in a vertical crucible furnace which was preheated to 950°C. The furnace was turned off after 20 min of heating and the vessel allowed to cool. Experience has shown that. this amount of heating is sufficient to assure complete reaction of the charge. A techno-economic assessment for the recovery of several elements from seawater is presented. Gold recovery has been used as an illustration for the economic evaluation of several processes. Current technology does not present any economically viable alternative to recover gold from seawater because its concentration is several magnitudes too low. However, with the increasingly larger availability of concentrated seawater, mainly from desalination and other processes, coupled with advances in technology, especially genetically modified specific microorganisms, may make the recovery of gold and other desired elements from seawater a reality in the near future.

One form of encouragement for the small copper mining sector in Chile has been the construction and management of custom mill facilities to process the ore. The paper describes an economic analysis framework for the evaluation of government custom milling opportunities. Feasible mill locations and capacities within a region are selected and the infrastructure and milling costs associated with each combination of location and capacity are assessed. For each combination, the economics of developing and operating known copper deposits in the region is evaluated, and an optimum cut-off grade and mine capacity is selected for the deposits which justify development. Since the total ore supply from mines in the region may exceed a particular custom mill capacity, mine development is scheduled to optimize the economics of the mill facility. Finally, the best custom mill location and capacity is selected on the basis of overall costs and benefits. A copper mining region in northern Chile is used to illustrate the application of the model. A mobile mill approach is examined and compared with the fixed location mill alternatives. Results are analyzed as a function of copper price.

IT is customary to plot crystallographic planes or axes on a Wulff stereographic net which is ruled with parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude. If a single crystal is placed at the center of a sphere, the coordinates of a crystallographic plane or axis are the coordinates of the point where the axis intersects the sphere. The standard (HKL) projection is the projection for which the sphere is rotated so that the (HKL) pole is at the center of the projection. Schiebold and Sachs' and many others have published standard projections for the more important planes of a cubic crystal. With Tables I and 11, it is possible to plot any plane (HKL) of a cubic crystal on a standard (001) projection if the absolute values of the individual H, K, and L are nine or less, which is almost always the case. Using the methods outlined by Barrett,' the standard (001) projection can be rotated so that any arbitrary plane is at the center of the projection. The tables are believed to be important for two reasons: 1—The heretofore published standard projections usually are not of the proper size to fit the stereographic nets available. With these tables a standard projection can be made which will be of exactly the proper size for the available stereographic net. 2—With the tables, planes that do not appear on the previously published standard projections can be easily plotted. For these reasons, the tables are especially useful in the study of optical reflections from etched surfaces and can also be used to make a standard projection for the axis which is normal to the macroscopic surface. (This axis can be found by X-ray or optical methods.) Then if the crystal is etched, the effect of the etchant can readily be determined by comparing the latitude and longitude of the reflecting planes (as determined with an optical goniometer) with the standard projection that has been prepared. This paper describes a method for obtaining compositions of gas and oil phases in equilibrium with each other at a given reservoir temperature and pressure as lean or enriched gas is injected into a reservoir oil not in equilibrium with the gas. The method is based on calculation of equilibrium constants, K, from the equation log Kp = A + B F, where p is pressure and F is component characterization factor. A and B are constants that vary with a composition parameter. The paper explains how A and B could be determined with a minimum amount of data. The method consists of calculating equilibrium constants as a function of liquid composition and using the K's to calculate changes in compositiort of injection gas as it successively contacts original resetvoir oil at the gas-oil front and the change in composition of reservoir oil as it is successively contacted by the injection gas in the vicinity of an injection well. An iterative process is required. Two examples of the method are given which show how oil and gas compositions and properties are calculated with the aid of a computer. INTRODUCTION The calculation of recovery from lean-gas or enriched-gas injection into a saturated or under-saturated reservoir oil requires a knowledge of how phase properties change in a reservoir between injection well and producing well. To determine the phase compositions or properties experimentally would be difficult and time consuming, especially if one wanted to look at the effect of various injection gas compositions. For some fields an engineer would want to make preliminary calculations on the economics of gas injection before he makes the decision to spend a corrsiderable sum of money for laboratory work to obtain the necessary fluid properties. A method for calculatine compositions and properties based on a minimum of laboratory data is described. The minimum amount of data required is injection gas and reservoir oil composition and injection gas solubility as a function of pressure for an undersaturated oil, or the compositions of mixtures of reservoir fluid with two or more enriched gases, which mixtures have a bubble-point pressure that is the same as the expected average displacement pressure. On the other hand, if the economics appear to be attractive, more laboratory data can be obtained in the form of equilibrium constants for three or more mixtures of the reservoir fluid and injection gases. The method is based on the calculation of K's from the equation, log Kp = A + B F, where K is equilibrium constant, p is pressure and F is component characterization factor. This method of plotting K data by means of the above equation is described by Hoffman, Crump and Hocott.1 A and B are constants that vary with a composition parameter. It is shown how experimental data are used to determine how A and B vary with composition. BASIS OF METHOD EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANTS Equilibrium constant (K) data are required for this method. The K of each component is obtained from an equation that gives the product of K and pressure as a function of component characterization factor. The characterization factor F = b(l/Tb — l/T), where b is a constant characteristic of a given component, Tb is the boiling point in OR at atmospheric pressure of the given component, and T is the temperature of the system in OR. This method of plotting K data is described by Hoffman, Crump and Hocott.l The straight-line equation of the log Kp - F plot is log hp = log Kop +BFi, where Kop is at F =0, i designates the component, and B is the slope of the line.
