A preliminary description is made of the field of automation and optimization of the oxygen blast furnace process. The concept of static and dynamic process control is illustrated. After a short general description of all factors concerning the optimization of this process, a learning system is derived which gives better results than models previously used. This learning or self-adaptive control system uses statistical methods with exponential aging of process data and requires derivation of multi-variable functions of the process for which measurements can be made available. The practical application of this new procedure and of additional measuring instruments are discussed, and results obtained in plants using the adaptive control system are described. A survey of European steel plant automation using the Siemens technique is presented.

A. J. Langhammer.—That is rather asking a question of the wrong man. However, I will reply to the question from our point of view. There is a considerable amount of iron powder available but the properties vary over a wide range. Powder metallurgy has progressed to the stage where we recognize certain requirements in powdered iron, and what may be a good powdered iron for one application will not necessarily fit the picture for the next one. Further, I believe that there is room for great improvement in the properties of powdered iron. Also, that there is only a limited quantity of powdered iron available having certain specific properties in which we are at the moment interested. F. P. Peters.—May I have a word? With all possible respect to the contributions of the Chrysler Corporation (and they have been tremendous) to the war effort, I think it is easy to get from part of Mr. Langhammer's discussion a false impression of vaster possibilities than really exist. It would be well if in addition to Mr. Langhammer some other manufacturers of machine parts' might tell us in the next few minutes some of the limitations they have found. For example, what is the maximum tensile strength that is being produced in a commercial part in production today? And what is the actual size limitation on bearings that are in operation and are standing up well? We should always bear in mind the fact—and I think Mr. Langhammer will agree with me— that quoting on a particular part does not necessarily mean placing it in production. In many cases it may be several months before the quotation is resolved and we know whether the part can be made. Let us open up this thing for a little free-for-all discussion of some of the ceilings that do exist in the design of machine parts made by powder metallurgy. The ceiling is not unlimited, and Mr. Langhsmmer will agree with that, 3 am sure. H. Hendriks.*—I do not think that there is so much limitation in the making of powder metallurgic manufactured parts as mentioned. Last year we had the problem of making dies for a special machine used in the manufacturing of slide fasteners. This part was wearing out very fast. It was very hard to make, it had to be hobbed out of a special steel and it was a difficult thing to manufacture in general. The tolerances were one half of one thousandth of one inch on all dimensions. We submitted this die to a manufacturer of powder-metal parts. He thought that it was impossible, but we were not as skeptical as he was and decided to try it anyway. The Canadian General Electric Carboloy Division, in Toronto, gave us then the design for the dies, which we made to their specifications. When the first part was delivered, we submitted it to our Inspection Department and its check showed that all the tolerances were right on the dot. They delivered I9 parts of exact specification, then they went off the beam; they could not keep to the tolerances. It took them a long time to get back again. We do not know what happened, but the main point I want to' make is that if a problem is attacked in the right may, the dies are made right and corrected as to dimensions found out by experiment, I do not think that there is so much diffculty in making powder-metal parts to close tolerances.

The boundaries of the oil region in Pennsylvania and New York, as determined by the drill, embrace a much larger extent of territory than is generally supposed, being nearly 200 miles in length from north to south, with an average width of 25 miles, covering an area, within somewhat irregular lines, of about 4250 square miles. After twenty years of development we find these lines practically the same as those laid down by McClure in his geological map of the United States, published in 1817, and denominated and colored by him as the "line of salt," which was found in quantity long before petroleum. The eastern line of the entire oil region lies in a northeast and southwest direction, parallel to and some distance west of the Allegheny Mountains; the south line is substantially one drawn between the western boundary of Butler County and the town of Kittanning in Armstrong County; the west line passes just outside of Butler County, cutting off a small corner of Mercer, west of the towns of Franklin, Titusville, and Warren, into New York State, where it rounds off the end of this long strip in the counties of Allegheny and Cattarangus, and joins the eastern line, near Olean, New York, north of the city of Bradford. The eastern line, starting from Kittanning, passes through the northeast corner of Clarion County, the southeast corner of Warren, cutting Forest County through the centre, and reaching the beforementioned extreme northeastern developments near Olean. These lines have been taken broadly to include all territory that could ever possibly come into the question as oil-producing. These lines having been proved by the drill may be considered

This paper deals with recent geologic studies in the slate belt of Northampton, Lehigh and Berks counties, Pennsylvania. The work was conducted under the auspices of the Pennsylvania Topographic and Geologic Survey. Three years have now been spent in detailed consideration of the economic geology of this region. In the field, particular attention was paid to the bearing of geology on quarry development and property valuation and the object of this paper is to summarize the results from that viewpoint. Excellent studies of a somewhat similar nature have already been carried out by Bowles,' but with the emphasis upon the details of quarrying and fabricating methods, rather than upon the geologic relations. The Northampton-Lehigh-BeRks District Location The region here discussed lies in east-central Pennsylvania and extends southwestward from Delaware River, on the New Jersey line, to the Schuylkill in north-central Berks County. It is an elongated belt occupying the northern sections of the three counties mentioned and lying along the southern edge of Blue Mountain. Its length is about 50 miles and its average width five or six, though in places it attains a maximum of 10 miles. There are no large cities in the region, but about 10 miles south are Reading, Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton. Railroads serving the slate belt are the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, and the Pennsylvania along the Delaware River, the Lehigh Valley and Central of New Jersey along the Lehigh, and the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia and Reading on the Schuylkill. In addition, two railroads—the Philadelphia and Reading and the Lehigh and New England—cut obliquely through the slate region to reach the more isolated communities. Outline of the Process THE Mines Operating Co.'s plant at Park City, Utah, was designed to treat the low-grade fillings in the old stopes of the Ontario mine. These fillings carry 6 to 14 oz. of silver, 1 to 2 lb. copper, 0.01 to 0.015 oz. of gold, and a small percentage of lead and zinc. The treatment consists in mixing the crushed ore with coal dust and salt and then roasting in a new type of furnace y combustion of the contained fuel. The roasted ore is leached with an acid salt solution to dissolve the silver, gold, copper, and lead. At present these metals are precipitated together on scrap iron and the product sold to a refinery. The only new feature of importance in this scheme of treatment is the roasting process, which makes possible the chloridizing of ores without any loss of the valuable metals, and at a very low cost. History of the Development of the Process The roasting process had its beginning in connection with research work at the Utah State School of Mines. N. C. Christensen, Jr., who held one of the School of Mines' fellowships, was engaged in some experimental work on blast roasting. At the same time I was doing some work on the insoluble gold in Mercur base ores. Mr. Christensen roasted some of this base gold ore in his pot furnace, and found that when he mixed a sufficiently low percentage of fuel with the ore, it did not sinter but roasted to a leachable product. We considered this a new application of blast roasting, and proceeded to test out a large number of ores in several different types of small roasters which we constructed. This experimental work continued well into the summer of 1911.

King, Bozeman, Mont.: The form of measuring up ore in sight looks very plausible, as illustrated in the paper of Mr. Emmons, but from my experience of many years of mining in Montana and Nevada, I have found it is very hard to measure up anything nearer than a guess of what you have in sight, except in the case of a true vein, or a flat vein where the boundaries are well defined. I have been interested in several miues with Dr. A. R. Ledoux, and I know that my foreman and myself, going into the mines and using our best judgment, could seldom see more than 30 days' supply actually in sight, and yet we were running from 100 to 250 tons a day, and keeping it up year after year. Prof. John D. Irving, New Haven, Conn.: I understand from Mr. Emmons that this is a method which has been found applicable in the copper-mines in Tennessee, where the record could be made with a good deal of accuracy, and where the work in the mines allowed the necessary development to be done, so that the record could be kept up. I do not think there was any intention in his mind to imply that this was applicable to all cases, especially such as Mr. King has mentioned. President Charles Kirchhoff, New York, N. Y. : I think the point is that the paper impresses the necessity for doing it where the possibilities exist. There has been too little attention given to this very matter, particularly in the United States; but I think our English friends are following it very much more zealously, and the demand for it there is possibly greater than it is here, because English boards of directors handle mines that are often very much further away than our own are, and the English public and the English engineers generally are very much more insistent upon seeing how much longer current dividends are going to last, or current assessments are going to continue.

In a recent discussion of the mineral resource position of the United States, published in the September 1946 issue of Mining and Metallurgy, I expressed my conviction that ore deposits of major magnitude remain to be found in this country and that they can be found without undue cost or risk. I stated with equally strong conviction, however, that if the search for such deposits is to be notably successful there must be, among other things, a reorientation of philosophy and mental habits on the part of many who would be connected with the search. I would now like to enlarge upon that statement. For such a purpose. we may consider that the search for concealed deposits involves four steps: (I) the selection of areas for further study; (2) the geologic study of those areas in order to verify their general favorableness and in order to choose specific patches worthy of being tested; (3) the decision whether exploration of the patches chosen should actually be undertaken; and (4) the exploration itself. The first two steps and the last rest upon the judgment and skill of geologists. The third step—the decision whether exploration should be undertaken—rests upon management. In my opinion, the philosophies or principles that have guided these steps in the past are now inadequate. Philosophy of Appraisal If concealed deposits are to be looked for, how are the places of their possible concealment to be recognized? Every known mineralized area still in the prospect stage has already been repeatedly examined and condemned. As for those deposits concealed under later rocks, there may be not even the clue of a near-by outcrop for engineer or geologist to consider. flow then, are we to know where to look? Geologic Probability In the early days of our mining industry, ore deposits were found mainly by "following the ore." Later, as such opportunities decreased, and as geologic concepts became accepted, deposits were found more and more through use of the notion of geologic probability. Many instances can be cited wherein a courageous operator ignored the implications of the unsuccessful efforts of predecessors and, solely by "following the ore," converted a discredited prospect into a good mine. Similar experience doubtless will occur in the future, but "following the ore" will no longer in itself find new deposits in the amount needed. Nor can enough new ore be expected from further use of the notion of geologic probability, for, as mentioned above, our known prospects have already been ex-

Secretary E. H. Benjamin, of the California Miners' Association, has proposed and begun, in co-operation with the testing laboratory of the University of California, at Berkeley, a series of tests which should prove of great interest and practical use to all persons making extensive application of steel wire cables, and especially to miners who run them in deep mines. Mr. Benjamin is endeavoring to obtain pieces of cable both new, and old and worn, from every deep mine of importance on the Pacific Coast, together with all the data obtainable concerning their manufacture and particular use. Pieces from each sample will be broken ill the laboratory before mentioned: and as far as possible the effects of winding around drums or pulleys ; of sudden starting and stopping when loaded; of heavy shocks, and of the general wear and tear of the cables, will be ascertained by these tests. The Olsen testing-machine of 200,000 pounds capacity will be used to break the cables, and the rupturing force, in different instances, will be applied slowly and also rapidly, in order to make the tests comparable as far as possible with the practical use of the cables themselves. All information and data available should be obtained for each specimen sent to the laboratory, the name of the manufacturer, the date of making, strength of cable when new and unrusted, as well as the circumstances and conditions of the practical use of the cable. Having this information before us, we shall be able to tell, approximately at least, the effects of age, rust, wear and tear, shocks, etc.; and perhaps be enabled to draw the line of limitation beyond which it would be no longer safe to use a cable of known manufacture. Moreover, by means of such tests we may, perhaps, he able to recommend worn cables for other uses, less severe in character, thereby prolonging the life of their effective usefulness. During no similar period in the development of petroleum refining technology has so much progress been made in methods and equipment for the economical utilization of heat. Drastically severe commercial and economical conditions controlling the refining industry during 1927 gave a great impetus to improved efficiency and more economical operation in all departments. I think it is fair to say, however, that more progress has been made in the department of heat utilization than in other branches. I use the word utilization advisedly in the dual sense of better primary generation and application of heat and of saving by recovery methods. It was because of this trend that the subject, "Economical Application of Heat," was made the keynote of the refinery engineering sessions just completed. No new, outstanding elemental discoveries can be claimed for the year along this line. Some of the progress made has been in the development of better furnaces and distilling equipment embodying the more modern principles of boiler practice in obtaining complete combustion of the fuel, low excess air requirements and high transfer rates through the heating surface. Transfer rates of 3000 to 6000 B. t. u. per sq. ft. per hr. were considered good some time ago in the older type of equipment. Today a transfer rate of 25,000 to 35,000 B. t. u. is an actual accomplishment in commercial installations and engineers are talking of the feasibility of 50,000, 75,000, even 100,000 R. t. u. per sq. ft. per hr. Contributing most to bringing this about have been the rational use of the velocity factor on both the oil and firing side of the heating surface, and the study and application of the principles of radiant heat in furnace design. Vapor Heat Economy The principle of heat exchange, especially against oil vapors, has been applied to a greater extent than ever before. The recovery of heat from oil vapors is not new. This was practiced 20 years ago or more in Europe,

The subject of the salt-water corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys is somewhat like that of the pitting of stainless steels, in that it involves a relatively small. percentage of the applications but receives a much greater proportion of the publicity. Actually magnesium alloys are in use in many exterior applications as well as interior, with no trouble from corrosion. Magnesium and its alloys have a striking stability against atmospheric attack, being far superior to iron. Specimens exposed unprotected to atmospheric weathering for Io Years show only a superficial surface-film formation. The basic nature of magnesium and of its important alloys is that they are also resistant to the attack of salt water even in an unprotected state, giving substantially no loss in weight after one year of alternate immersion in 3 per cent NaCl solution (Fig. 1). This basic behavior is often masked because of the extreme sensitivity of these alloys to certain impurities and combinations of impurities. It is known, and the subject of increasing emphasis, that higher purity leads generally to greater stability for many materials, non-metallic as well as metallic. However, a review of the literature on the corrosion factors in magnesium alloys shows that almost all researchers worked with base metal in which metallic impurities varied in uncontrolled amounts. The major factor, that of metallic impurities, Probably greatly overshadowed the effects of minor ones such as flux inclusions, nonmetallic impurities, porosity, metallographic state, which these researchers presumed to study. In the present investigation the first observation of interest is that whereas magnesium of commercial purity (99.9 per cent pure) has a corrosion rate in alternate immersion in 3 per cent NaCl solution at room temperature of anywhere from 5 to Ioo mg. per sq. cm. per day, the corrosion rate of high.purity magnesium is 0.15 ± 0.05 mg, per sq. cm. per day. The principle followed in the experiments was to add to such base magnesium other elements, singly and in inin in controlled and known amounts and to observe the corrosion behavior of the resulting alloy. These experiments show the existence of what may be called tolerance limits" of magnesium and some of its alloys for certain impurities. The extremely small percentages of impurities involved and the sharpness of the corrosion discontinuities appear to be quite unpredictable, In order to carry on this work, it was necessary to develop an analysis technique suitable to the problem. In some cases it was necessary quantitatively to analyze impurities to less than 0,001 per cent. The experimental data to be presented are based on observation of about 5000 alloy specimens and on more than 50,000 quantitative analyses. while the primary purpose of this paper is to present the experimentally obtained data on corrosion rates as a function of composition, and particularly to demon-

The industry of producing and processing boron compounds is called the borax industry because the chief product is borax, the decahydrate of disodium tetraborate. For the same reason, it is common to speak of borax mining. Reference to borate mining also is common, and while appropriate where it emphasizes the diversity of borate minerals that are mined in various countries, it is rather unsatisfactory where used in a general sense, because it seems to exclude the important production of borax from brine at Searles Lake, California, and of boric acid from steam vents in Tuscany, Italy. The terms "boron industry" and "boron mining" might seem more comprehensive, but are little used, and this is fortunate because they would be misleading-the element boron is manufactured only in small amounts for special uses, and it is not found free in nature. In most occurrences, boron is combined with oxygen and is in a borate or borosilicate material. The history of the modem borax industry starts with the introduction into Europe of borax from Tibet in the 13th century, about the time of Marco Polo, if not actually by him. The discovery that borax has unique value as a flux in metal soldering and ceramic glazing must have been made at some unknown time much earlier. As a rule, any mineral that has been used so long that its early history is lost must occur in deposits that are easily recognized and worked, and this is undoubtedly true of borax in Tibet. According to meager accounts,9 the borax occurs there in arid mountain basins as surficial crusts that coat the ground about thermal springs and seeps of mineralized water, and as coarser crystals in the bottom muds of shallow pools and lakes. Much the same essential features of surface exposures and minerals easy to recognize and recover characterize most of the deposits later found and worked elsewhere. The borax industry at the present time is faced with rising demands for its products, and consequently is increasing its productive capacity and appraising its borate resources.18 The areas that contain the known borate deposits are most likely to yield additional production, hence their distribution in the world is of interest, and is summarized later in this chapter. Mineralogy The mineral raw materials used by the borax industry include various borates mined in several countries, borax extracted from brines at Searles Lake in California, and boric acid extracted from the steam of vents in Tuscany in Italy. The hydrated borates[$] of chief commercial importance are listed in Table 1, which also shows their chemical composition. The properties of only the four most important borates are summarized here, but detailed descriptions of the borates and the minerals commonly found with them can be found in mineralogy textbooks.41 Ulexite generally forms clusters of silky fibers rather than large individual crystals. When a steel in the austenitic state, with all its carbon in solution, is maintained, at constant temperature, in contact with a gas that removes the carbon from the surface, yet without otherwise altering the composition of the steel, the change in weight of the specimen, after any period of exposure, is a direct measure of the amount of carbon it has then lost. The purpose of the present paper is to show how, by application of established mathematical reasoning based on the fundamental diffusion law and on certain postulates, this loss of weight yields a complete picture of the distribution of carbon throughout a specimen of regular shape after any period of exposure, with all the accuracy required in any practical occurrence of decarburization. Precisely the same is true for the gain in weight during the reverse process of carburization, or for the gradual gain or loss of any element, so long as the steel comprises only a single phase at temperature, provided always that the experimental conditions conform to the postulates. The change in carbon content from surface to center of the specimen is always continuous, when everything is in solution, even though under the microscope the decarburized zone (or carburized rim) may appear to be sharply defined. The experimental procedure is described and some typical results are presented, which are then interpreted by application of the diffusion law. Experimental Procedure Initially an endeavor was made to follow the gain of weight during the process of carburization in a hydrogen-toluene atmosphere, but it was soon found that the specimen became coated with graphite, which could not be removed without some loss of metal; therefore it was decided to continue carburization until the steel was saturated throughout, to remove all graphite from the surface of the specimen, and then to follow the loss of weight during decarburization in a moist hydrogen atmosphere at the same temperature as that used for carburizing. When a steel in the austenitic state, with all its carbon in solution, is maintained, at constant temperature, in contact with a gas that removes the carbon from the surface, yet without otherwise altering the composition of the steel, the change in weight of the specimen, after any period of exposure, is a direct measure of the amount of carbon it has then lost. The purpose of the present paper is to show how, by application of established mathematical reasoning based on the fundamental diffusion law and on certain postulates, this loss of weight yields a complete picture of the distribution of carbon throughout a specimen of regular shape after any period of exposure, with all the accuracy required in any practical occurrence of decarburization. Precisely the same is true for the gain in weight during the reverse process of carburization, or for the gradual gain or loss of any element, so long as the steel comprises only a single phase at temperature, provided always that the experimental conditions conform to the postulates. The change in carbon content from surface to center of the specimen is always continuous, when everything is in solution, even though under the microscope the decarburized zone (or carburized rim) may appear to be sharply defined. The experimental procedure is described and some typical results are presented, which are then interpreted by application of the diffusion law. Experimental Procedure Initially an endeavor was made to follow the gain of weight during the process of carburization in a hydrogen-toluene atmosphere, but it was soon found that the specimen became coated with graphite, which could not be removed without some loss of metal; therefore it was decided to continue carburization until the steel was saturated throughout, to remove all graphite from the surface of the specimen, and then to follow the loss of weight during decarburization in a moist hydrogen atmosphere at the same temperature as that used for carburizing. Because it is the basis of the economically important operation of hardening steel by quenching, the A3 transformation in iron has been the subject of numerous investigations. Although the contributions to this subject are interesting, no general review will be given here. Readers who care to follow the matter further are referred to the comprehensive summary by Cleaves and Thompson,l which covers the literature to about 1935. Their references to 53 papers on the subject suggest that further investigation is hardly justifiable. However, considerable interest has devel oped recently concerning the reversibility of the transformation. From thermo-dynamic considerations, the transition ought to occur at the same point on heating or cooling, if the change of temperature is sufficiently slow. Yet all of the earlier investigators found a difference of several degrees. Burgess and Crowe,2 who used thermal methods, obtained average temperatures of 912" for Ac3 and 900°C. for Ar3 on electrolytic iron. Their data indicate a considerable range of temperature over which the change occurs, both on heating and on cooling. Terry3 measured the susceptibility in the critical range and estimated from the steepest parts of his curves that Ac3 came at 9I8° and Ar3 at 903°C. Ishiwara4 was one of the first investigators to report a shorter interval between the temperature of the change in the two directions. He measured the change of susceptibility of kaolin-coated samples of steel, in a hydrogen atmosphere, at rater of heating and cooling so low that about 3 or 4 hr. were required for the transformation to complete itself. His results show some variability between samples, but indicate that the difference between Ac3 and Ar3 is in the vicinity of 6°C. Roberts and Davey5 measured the space lattice in pure iron in the vicinity of 900°C. and concluded that a change occurs reversibly between 907' 3" and 910" 3°C., probably between 907" and 910°C. Wells, Ackley, and Meh16 made dilatometric determinations of the Ac3 and Ar3 points in samples of hydrogen-treated carbonyl iron maintained under a vacuum. They used three rates of heating and cooling: 2°, ½°, and .?°C. per min. and found the spread between the two points decreased with low rates. At the slowest rate, the Ac3 transition occurred at 909° to 909. 5°C. and the Ar3 change at 907°C. in three of the samples believed to contain the lowest percentages of alien elements. They concluded that if the rate of temperature change and the content of alien eiements were low enough, the A3 transformation would be completely reversible at 909.50 + 1°C. The question of reversibility is an interesting one and when some iron with especially small percentages of alien elements became available the opportunity to conduct an investigation was welcomed. Copper-decorated lattice disorders in silicon have been analyzed by electron transmission microscopy, chemical etching, and P-N junction reverse current measurements before and following different gettering treatments. Lattice disorders acted as the nucleating sites for copper precipitation. Copper precipitates in silicon resist chemical etching, absorb electron beams more than silicon, and cause excess reverse currents. Totally gettered disorders will chemically etch rapidly, be transparent to electron beams at extinction contrast, and not contribute to excess reverse currents. Three different gettering procedures were performed to determine the effectiveness of different EXTRANEOUS metal contamination can alter the minority carrier lifetime and resistivity of bulk silicon as well as cause excessive reverse currents in semiconductor devices. Previous workers have reported such activity for gold,1,2 copper,'-* iron,' and rnanganese.2,5 Gettering is a method employed to render these impurities electrically inactive. However, some property of the junction-degrading metals prevents gettering procedures from being wholly reliable. The comparative effectiveness of gettering with different agents has been the topic of earlier publications.2,3,6-11 Two mechanisms for gettering metallic impurities have been proposed: the distribution coefficient mechanism by Thurmond and Logan7 and the compound formation mechanism by Goetzberger and Shockley.2 Both of these models evolved from data gettering mechanisms. First, phosphorus was allowed to enter a protective SiO2 film but remain away from the Si-SiO2 interface to test the effectiveness of the compound formation gettering mechanism. Second, phosphorus was allowed to enter the backside of silicon wafers to test the effectiveness of the lattice strain gettering mechanism. Finally, nickel was diffused into the backside of silicon wafers to test the effectiveness of the distribution coefficient gettering mechanism. In each case, copper precipitates dissolved as a result of the gettering treatment. Tightly packed precipitates will resist gettering more than loosely packed copper precipitates. acquired by the electrical analyses of gettered semiconductor materials. An electrical analysis, however, cannot identify the fate of the gettered metals. The radiotracer technique has recently been applied to determine the redistribution of metals following different gettering treatments.3,9,10 The spatial resolu tion of the radiotracer technique prevented the analysis of metal precipitates which contribute to the excessive reverse currents of P-N junctions. The gettering processes employed by the earlier workers, almost without exception, allowed the gettering agent to enter the silicon lattice. This procedure makes it quite difficult to differentiate between the distribution coefficient and the compound formation mechanisms. The metallographic analysis of gettered copper precipitates discussed in this work supplements the earlier work by obtaining direct evidence of silicon lattice defects decorated with copper before and following different gettering treatments.
